T

wo Group 1 races provide the headline acts on the penultimate day of Royal Ascot. The first of those is a relatively new addition to the programme, the Commonwealth Cup. Introduced at Group 1 level in 2015, this six furlong three-year-old only race was part of a wider initiative designed to enhance the sprinting programme in Europe. In that short period it has had some excellent winners including champion sprinter Muhaarar and Advertise who won the 2019 renewal which was the joint highest rated threeyear-old race in the world that year. The Coronation Stakes is the other Group 1 race on the card which brings together the form lines from the British, Irish and French 1,000 Guineas. Indeed, French trained horses have an excellent record in the race, winning three of the last

the Royal Ascot Insider

six renewals. The most recent filly to follow up from one of the Guineas is the brilliant Alpha Centauri who broke the track record when winning in 2018. Before the top-level action though is the Group 3 Albany Stakes for two-year-old fillies over six furlongs and the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes, still colloquially known as the Ascot Derby and often featuring horses that have run well in the Epsom Classic just two weeks earlier. Friday’s racing will involve a poignant moment as the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes is run for the first time since the passing of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh earlier in the year. There are many happy memories of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh at Ascot where he accompanied Her Majesty The Queen on so many occasions and shared in her successes.

One of the most memorable moments was in 2012 when His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh presented Her Majesty The Queen with the Queen’s Vase after Estimate’s victory. The race itself was renamed in honour of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh in 1999 and is a handicap run over a mile and a half. Last year it provided Hollie Doyle with her first Royal Ascot winner when she partnered Scarlet Dragon to victory. The concluding Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes was new to the programme last year and is retained in the permanently extended programme. It is a five furlong sprint handicap for three-year-olds and the winner last year, Art Power, went on to Group level success.

A family affair

For trainer Eve Johnson Houghton, racing is very much a family affair. Based at Woodway stables on the Berkshire downs where she grew up, her grandfather trained out this same yard; but only for five or so years. “My grandparents bought this place in 1945 or so, just after the war”, explains Eve. But in 1952 her father’s father, Gordon Johnson Houghton, died in a hunting accident. Her grandmother, Helen, took over the running of the yard – but in the 1950s, women were not allowed to take out a trainers licence.

T

heir attempt to get round this involved employing a male assistant to work at the yard, and running the horses in his name. The Jockey Club weren’t keen on the idea. The family still have some of the letters from the Jockey Club from that time. They are ”really vitriolic”, says Eve. “Saying how can you have him as a trainer, it’s in name only – we know he won’t be training the horses, and you’re a mere woman and you shouldn’t be allowed to do it. It was unbelievable language.” Fortunately, the Johnson Houghtons had support from within. “Luckily one of the senior stewards at the Jockey Club happened to be an owner and he sorted them out and they let her train” explains Eve. “So Fortunately, the she trained until my dad Johnson Houghtons had support from within. took over, under various people’s names”. One of these people was Charles Jerdein, and in 1956 their horse Gilles de Retz won the 2,000 guineas. Although the horse ran in his name, it is widely accepted

when he won the King George in 1978. In 2018, Eve caused a similar Royal Ascot upset when her horse Accidental Agent won the Queen Anne Stakes off a starting price of 33-1. That made Eve the fourth woman to train a domestic Group One winner – or the fifth, if you include her grandmother Helen.

In 1961 Eve’s father, Fulke Johnson Houghton (named after his uncle, Fulke Walwyn – Helen’s twin brother, and a hugely successful National Hunt trainer in his own right) took over the running of the stable. “Dad had about twelve Royal Ascot To add to the family winners; he did very well relevance, Accidental at Ascot”, says Eve. Those Agent is named after Eve’s included Rose Bowl, who maternal grandfather; twice won the Queen John Goldsmith. racehorse trainer himself, in 1942 he was recruited to the Special Operations Executive, where his exploits included escaping from the Gestapo in Paris, where he had been locked in a hotel room. He was awarded the DSO, the Military Cross, Croix de Guerre and the Legion d’Honneur for his work, and after the war, returned to racehorse training. His own account of his time with the SOE was titled ‘Accidental Agent’ – hence the horse’s name. On a sunny morning on the chalk downs where Eve grew up and now

“Even since I’ve had a licence, thing have changed so much” trains, it’s hard to imagine a more bucolic scene. “These gallops have never been ploughed”, she explains. “It’s only in the last thirty or forty years that they’ve actually been able to use downland for farming because it’s very poor soil – so all this beautiful downland has never been ploughed up at all.” Her father’s family have trained here since just after the second world war, while John Goldsmith (the Accidental Agent himself) trained “just over there’, says Eve, pointing. “But”, she adds, “he would have used these gallops.” The downs may have changed over the last century; now in addition to the 250 acres of grass 14

could count on one hand how many female trainers there were. But it’s becoming more and more acceptable, a bit like girl jockeys becoming more and more acceptable. It’s not a strange thing to have a woman as a trainers; it’s the norm – which is good!”

That isn’t the only thing that has changed in the last century. While Eve’s grandmother had a huge fight on her hands to be able to train racehorses – even without putting her name to them – things have changed enormously. “Even since I’ve had a licence, thing have changed so much”, says Eve. I took my licence out in 2007, and I was still very much a lone female. You

Her assistant trainer – Georgina Scott – is also female, and Eve rides out when she can. “It’s normally in the winter – not because I like riding in the winter, but that tends to be when we’re shorthanded, and I tend to be more busy in the summer. But it’s difficult to both ride out and watch them; you can’t do it all. But I love riding out – and of course I think I can do it

better than anyone else!” Accidental Agent is the stable entry that everyone will be talking about and, says Eve, “he loves Ascot. He loves a straight, galloping stiff mile. And he runs his best races there, so why not take him back?”. The stable also have another Royal Ascot entry by the name of Jumby – who is due to run in the Commonwealth Cup. “He’s lovely”, she exclaims. “He won at Ascot first time out as a 2 year old, so we know he likes the track

– and he’s back on flying form now.” In May Jumby raced at Newmarket and, as predicted, showed himself to be on top form, winning under William Buick. Could he be another one to look out for at the Royal Ascot meeting? As Eve says herself, “I’m lucky at Ascot – it is quite a lucky track for me. But

@ascotracecourse |

Of course, the Covid pandemic has affected all racegoers and trainers, and continues to do so. For the horses as well, this has been a funny old year. “I think there’s a lot of horses that still don’t know what they’re doing due to Covid; a lot that are very green”, says Eve. “It’ll be interesting when the crowds come back because many of the younger horses have

his year, alongside our usual champagne, fine wine and cocktails, you can enjoy Royal Ascot’s first ever Mindful Cocktail the ‘Royal Rose’. This alcohol-free mindful cocktail was created to celebrate the return of Royal Ascot and to provide a unique serve for those who’d like to explore a more mindful approach to drinking.

We caught up with Harrogate Spring’s mindful drinking ambassador Camille Vidal, Founder of La Maison Wellness, to talk about her bespoke mindful cocktail for Royal Ascot

and her tips for starting your mindful drinking journey! Camille, please tell us about yourself! I’m Camille Vidal, the creator of Mindful Cocktails™ and founder of La Maison Wellness a Mindful Drinking platform and world’s largest No & Low recipe resource. I help people drink well and celebrate like healthy hedonists so we can all make the most out of life in a way that feels good now and tomorrow. What is mindful drinking? Mindful drinking isn’t about drinking alcohol or abstaining, it’s about becoming aware of our

drinking habits and finding the balance that works best for ourselves; for some that means sobriety and for others moderation, but it always means drinking better and more mindfully with better ingredients, less alcohol and more awareness! The pandemic has enlightened many of us to the importance of selfcare and its effect on our wellbeing. How do you see the mindful drinking movement evolving over the next year? Some people think mindful drinking is a trend, but I believe mindful drinking is a way of life. You can drink well with delicious cocktails that allow you to celebrate the moment, remember your nights (and days!) and feel good the day after! You’ve partnered with Harrogate Spring Water to become their Mindful Drinking Ambassador. Tell us more! Yes, I was delighted to partner with Harrogate Spring Water as their Mindful Drinking ambassador! Hydration is KEY for Mindful Drinking. Having a glass of water before ordering a drink

gives you the time to figure out if you want to go alcohol free or have something alcoholic. Make sure you have water next to your alcoholic drink and have one glass between each order. I always place a bottle of water on my bed to remember to hydrate before I go to sleep after a night out! You created Royal Ascot’s first ever Mindful Cocktail, ‘The Royal Rose’ Tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind the recipe? I love long refreshing drinks and Harrogate Spring Water has a crisp, refreshing taste perfect for cocktail creations! For the cocktail I created for Royal Ascot, I wanted something light, refreshing and elegant to celebrate an event like no other and enable guests to have a good time and not only celebrate, but to remember the day! I’ve combined Ceder’s alcohol free spirit with rose water, pink grapefruit juice, rapberry syrup and lengthened with a refreshing top up of Harrogate’s Sparkling Water. What top tips would you give to people who are curious about mindful drinking? Become aware of your drinking habits Awareness is key. Often drinking alcohol is a default and we don’t pay attention to our drinking habits. By bringing awareness and starting to understand why we drink, we can make positive change, but also appreciate more when we do decide to drink (if we do decide to drink!) Question the drinking culture Alcohol is so embedded in society but it’s time we question, and, dare I say it challenge that.

We don’t have to imbibe alcohol to have a good time, to be social or to bring connection. We can if we want too, but it doesn’t always have to be part of the equation and definitely not in excess! Know your limit Knowing your limit is repecting yourself and ensuring a good night stays a good night. Become aware of the signs, slow down and drink more water! Introduce Alcohol free and low alcohol to your repertoire! Discover the declious

and exciting world of No & Low! You don’t have to miss out or compromise on flavours and it will also allow you to find your balance and respect your limit. You can alternate between alcohol and alcohol free, or switch to alcohol free when you reach your limit! Find your balance There is no one size fits all and I actually encourage and empower people to find their unit balance, it may be removing alcohol, replacing alchol or reducing alcohol; I want to give you the tools to be able to make your unique recipe and find your own balance. Enjoy the hangover free life! I’m not talking about sobriety here, I’m talking about never going over your limit, being empowered and in control so you never have to pay the price for your celebrations the day after! You can find the ‘Royal Rose’ at Bit and Bridle and the Juniper Gin Terrace, plus all the Fine Dining Restaurants.

I got in touch with The Jockey Club Estates to ask if I could access the gallops to which they kindly obliged Within a couple of weeks of being out on the gallops, I was being asked for pictures by riders and trainers covering the behind the scenes work that goes into preparing the horses in training for racing. I decided to get organised and set up an Instagram account called @ horsesintraining to post my favourite image from each session out on the gallops and try and reach a larger audience that was in love with horse racing. And a route through to the galleries on my website where all can see the images from a session (now over 450 since starting). Little did I or the rest of the World know what would come next. I was supposed to be photographing polo in Thailand and had to return quickly on the 21st of March due to the virus escalating in China.

The more I get to learn, the more it has become a passion. Learning to understand the nuances of conformation, sex, age, pedigree and how every trainer has their unique methods. On the 23rd of March, the first lockdown was announced, I lost all my client work planned and booked in - sports, hotels, behind-the-scenes, people, all cancelled! A total nightmare for a freelance creator. The only work I could do was go out onto the gallops as this complied with the government rules. The more I get to learn, the more it has become a passion. Most people never get to see the first staff turning up at 03:30, prepping the yard ready for the staff and riders to take the horses out at first lot. 05:40 seems to be the time right now, where the trainer along with his whole team of support staff, the rider’s and the professional jockeys you see on TV all turn up to ride work or exercise.

The owners wanting to see pictures of their horses, especially as they couldn't leave their homes to come and visit during the lockdowns. It is a real privilege to be able to do this and share what goes on behind the scenes.

I'm quite often done taking my images by 09:30. These guys continue exercising all morning. I go back to my studio and start processing the photography. This can easily take all day and I try to get the new galleries live for early evening. When I post a new image to the Instagram account I can see 3,000+ people visiting the website over a 3-4 hour period. I'm truly amazed so many people enjoy seeing this work.

I see the expressions in horses faces and bodies when they train and I see the love given daily by the riders, the people who spend the most time with them. I'm proud to be associated with the sport. I intend to keep on showcasing how amazing these beautiful animals are and the work that goes into preparing them for racing.

nd it’s that sense of dazzlement, of finery on parade, and of British tradition at its best, that has helped turn Ascot into a byword of formality and splendour. To think of Ascot – and its series of races and the different dress rules that apply to each enclosure – is to conjure images of morning suits in all their immaculate glory, of glossy top hats glinting in the summer sun and a studious respect for Dress Codes which is so lacking in other facets of society today. Even Henry Higgins fell somewhat short; “you’re not even dressed for Ascot” chides his mother. “I changed my shirt,” is his response. “I very much enjoy Royal Ascot’s Dress Codes,” says Ed Chamberlin of ITV’s racing coverage team. “It’s traditional and quintessentially British, but it has also moved with the times. Ascot prides

38

itself on having something for everyone so if you don’t fancy dressing up, there are still plenty of options available” says Chamberlin. Of course, talking ‘dressing up’ has a

“Ascot prides itself on having something for everyone so if you don’t fancy dressing up, there are still plenty of options available” great deal more resonance today. With the world on hold these past 18 months thanks to the pandemic, the social events that once governed ‘the English season’ were non-existent, and with no offices or formal functions to attend, the rigours around gentlemanly dress have waned somewhat, understandably. Savile Row has reported huge losses, and some devastating closures, as our demand and need for suits became obsolete. However, with a slated return to offices from the 21st June in Britain, and Royal Ascot going ahead in physical form, it’s never been more pertinent for men to enjoy the ceremony of dressing up once more. And never has that been more in evidence throughout history than at Royal Ascot. Because men’s attire has always been a crucial ingredient in making Royal Ascot such a show of sartorial force. It was actually Beau Brummel, the original dandy who defined flamboyant, peacocking dress in the 19th century - and who is so synonymous with sartorialism that his statue stands on Jermyn St today - that was integral in setting up its gentlemanly Dress Codes, working with the then Prince Regent to decree that black coats and white cravats with pantaloons should be worn to the

Royal Meeting. This, for the uninitiated, is the most formal and swaggering of all the different races. There are various enclosures within the racecourse, but the Royal Enclosure is, as one might expect, the most august and primly upright in its formality; full morning suit with a waistcoat is a must, with a black or grey top hat. Black shoes only, if you please - never brown, which denotes country pursuits instead of more decorous occasions - and in 2018 a rule was announced to counteract the rise of the ‘mankle’; bare ankles on men were deemed inappropriate. There has been little altering to the mores of the Dress Code for men in the Royal Enclosure over the centuries, but minor adjustments and nods to the prevailing winds of trends have occasionally been permitted.

“Similarly, more ‘playful’ elements are allowed – for example printed or patterned ties and pocket squares or eyecatching cufflinks – providing they are not novelty. ” It was in 2018, for example, that it became acceptable to remove their coats and hats in searing temperatures – only when authorised by the racecourse. Otherwise, top hats must remain firmly in situ bar while dining, in a Private Box or an enclosed terrace. This year, headlines were made when the Dress Code allowed for navy to join the standard black and grey shades of morning suits, an acknowledgement of a more corporate, City-centric form of tailoring that modern men have become accustomed to. Similarly, more ‘playful’ elements are allowed – for example printed or patterned ties and pocket

squares or eye-catching cufflinks – providing they are not novelty. What icons of Royal Ascot past might have thought are anyone’s guess; archive photography of the Royal Family in attendance show the Duke of York, who would become King George in 1907, stately in black, a bustle of Edwardian ladies in full plumage alongside him. In the 1930s, the Duke of Windsor attended alongside Wallis Simpson looking pinsharp in a steely grey top hat. Images of the recently departed Duke of Edinburgh show him in grey morning dress and hat, with little more than a striped club tie as decoration, while Prince Charles throughout his Royal Ascot attendance has stuck to sombre black in his early years, segueing into light grey with complementing lilacs and blues accessories later in life.

All of which begs the question; how should you dress for this most proper of occasions? Oliver Spencer, founder of Ascot’s official morning suit outfitters Favourbrook, has some words of advice. “We’ve all adapted to the online world,” says Spencer. “But in this instance, it’s really crucial that it’s physically fitted properly in store. It’s not just about the body but the mind too; it helps to talk details of fit and size over with a professional.” Of course, for the uninitiated, a morning suit can seem like an imposing proposition, quite unlike other, more familiar forms of tailoring. In this respect, navy can be an ‘in’; “for the man who might feel a black coat and striped trousers are too traditional, it’s a great stepping stone,” says the designer. And don’t be afraid to play around; try out waistcoat colours of pale pastels, for example, to fine tune what works for you. When it comes to holding your head high as you sweep into the Royal Enclosure, it certainly helps to have the right top hat too. Fortunately, Oliver Brown proprietor Kristian Robson has some insights; “first of all, it’s important to wear it correctly,” says Robson, who oversees the historic house and official top hat supplier of the event. “It must be flat on the head, an inch above the ears, never tilted backwards or forwards.” Similarly, it’s important not to turn the hat upside down if taken off - it can damage the crown. The shape, says Robson, should be tall rather than short, and the best fabric in most circumstances is silk. “It just has such a lovely lustre and when polished the shine really reflects the light, it’s very elegant to see,” says the owner. He also 42

@ascot |

@ascotracecourse |

advises polished wools as an alternative, and notes that in other areas of the uniform, one’s waistcoat must never be shorter than the length of the shirt, and it should be neatly tidy – don’t over accessorise it and certainly don’t fill the waistcoat pockets, if it has them. His most essential pearl of style wisdom is, however, about confidence rather than the granular details. “Ascot is to be enjoyed, so really take pleasure in dressing up. We haven’t been able to relish events like this for so long, so the most important element in having a spring in your step is that sense of joy.” After centuries of Royal Ascot, 2021’s might just be the most poignant yet. A History Of

Ascot

Over three centuries Ascot has both set and raised the standard for racecourses. It has evolved from the far-sighted vision of a Queen from a distant era into a byword for horse racing of the highest quality. The palpable sense of glamour, pageantry and history, underpinned by Ascot’s outstanding modern facilities, offers an experience like no other. 52

I

t all began more than 300 years ago, in 1711, when the first horse races were staged on a piece of heathland that Queen Anne had identified as a suitable place to run horses. On Saturday 11th August of that year, seven horses lined up to compete for the inaugural ‘Her Majesty’s Plate’.

That piece of heathland has evolved into one of the world’s most iconic sporting theatres. Ascot’s first four-day event, from which the formal ‘Royal’ Ascot meeting would eventually spring, took place in 1768. In 1825, King George IV suggested that the reigning monarch could travel in a horse-drawn carriage from the racecourse’s Golden Gates, and down the Straight Mile, to open Royal Ascot each day. And so the Royal Procession – one of Royal Ascot’s most famous and beloved traditions – was born. 1910’s Royal Meeting, which came a few weeks after the death of King Edward VII, became known as ‘Black Ascot’. Racegoers attended in mourning attire as a mark of respect to the late monarch, who occupies a place in Ascot’s history as one of its most passionate supporters.

middle-distance races in Europe, and since 2011 Ascot has hosted QIPCO British Champions Day – the starstudded championship finale to the Flat season. The Queen’s Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees have all been celebrated at Royal Ascot. In 2006, Her Majesty opened a new Grandstand, heralding a new era for the racecourse and consolidating its position as one of the finest racing venues in the world. From Frankel to Black Caviar and from Yeats to Brigadier Gerard, Ascot has crowned so many champions across so many eras. It’s been some story so far, and we can’t wait to find out what the next chapters hold. A History Of Ascot

Celebrating the success of

Prince Khalid Abdullah

at Royal Ascot

Legendary ownerbreeder Prince Khalid Abdullah died aged 83 at the beginning of this year. His legacy in the sport stretches far and wide with his famous green, white and pink silks carried to victory by so many of the sport’s great horses.

56

@ascot @ascot |

Kingman

T

hose horses often came to the fore at Royal Ascot with the likes of Kingman, Byword, Banks Hill, Danehill and of course the incomparable Frankel carrying his colours to victory.

Prince Khalid Abdullah owned 41 Royal Ascot winners in total, starting with Abeer in the 1979 Queen Mary Stakes, his first Group winner. That was just two years after he purchased his first yearlings which kick-started his plans for @ascotracecourse |

what would become an international breeding operation. The Royal Ascot winners flowed fairly regularly from the early 1980s, including a remarkable six at the 1989 Royal Meeting. They included several of the highest profile races with Warning in the Queen Anne Stakes, Two Timing in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and Danehill in the then Cork and Orrery Stakes (now the Diamond Jubilee Stakes).

Frankel

Those three races were not run at Group 1 level at the time though and his first top-level success at Royal Ascot came in 2001 when Banks Hill, trained by Andre Fabre, won the Coronation Stakes. Fabre was also responsible for Byword, who won the 2010 Prince of Wales’s Stakes, leading home a memorable 1-2 in the Group 1 feature race on the Wednesday for Prince Khalid with Twice Over second. In 2011 he was Champion Owner for the third and final time helped of course by Frankel in his threeyear-old career under the guidance of Sir Henry Cecil. Having blown the field away in the 2,000 Guineas he arrived at Royal Ascot for the St James’s Palace Stakes as a red-hot favourite to extend his unbeaten run to a perfect seven. All seemed to be going to plan as Tom Queally sent him to the front and he was six lengths clear with two furlongs to run. It turned out to be a dramatic finish though as Zoffany stayed on strongly and got to within three parts of a length of Frankel who just held on.

He returned a year later as a four-year-old to contest the Queen Anne Stakes and produced one of the most jaw-dropping performances ever seen at Royal Ascot. Positioned perfectly behind his pace maker, Bullet Train, Queally edged Frankel to the front from the halfway point before he opened up in stunning style to produce a brilliant 11 length victory. Frankel continues to have an impact on the sport through his progeny and he recorded a first Royal Ascot winner as a sire when Without Parole won the St James’s Palace Stakes in 2018

James Doyle. Retired at three, Kingman has since produced three Royal Ascot winners himself in Palace Pier as well as Sangarius and Calyx in the Juddmonte colours, so his legacy lives on and will continue to grow.

Abeer

while Monarchs Glen won the Wolferton Stakes that same year in Prince Khalid’s silks. Just two years after Frankel, Prince Khalid had another star on his hands in Kingman. Agonisingly beaten in the 2,000 Guineas, he set the record straight at Royal Ascot when winning the St James’s Palace Stakes in devastating fashion under

In total, Prince Khalid recorded more than 500 Group level victories around the world, including 118 at Group 1 level with five of those coming at Royal Ascot. His colours continue to be carried under the Juddmonte name and no doubt there will be many more Royal Ascot victories to celebrate.

Embraer Praetor 600 Combines Technology, Efficiency and Performance

The new Embraer Praetor 600 doesn’t just raise the bar for performance in the super-midsize class of private aircraft, it redefines what a super-midsize aircraft should be.

F

rom its intercontinental range and smooth fly-by-wire controls to its ergonomic seating and ultra-quiet environment, the Praetor 600 provides passengers with the comforts of a large cabin aircraft in a more agile package. This agility is a key differentiator for the Praetor 600. While the aircraft is equipped with the same Honeywell HTF7500E engines as its predecessor, the Legacy 500, Embraer added a software update to the Praetor 600 that boosts thrust by nearly 500 pounds. The Praetor 600 also features a new winglet design that increases wingspan and improves airflow. When combined with advancements in the cockpit, these power and structural upgrades give the Praetor 600 exceptional short-field performance. That means it can go to places other super-midsize aircraft can’t go to, including some of the world’s most challenging airports in city centers and mountainous regions such as London City or La Mole in South of France. This ultimately puts passengers closer to their destinations and substantially reduces transit time. No matter where they are flying, Praetor 600 passengers benefit from Embraer’s Active Turbulence Reduction, the first system of its kind ever fitted to a super-midsize aircraft. Active Turbulence Reduction is made possible because of the Praetor 600’s full fly-by-wire controls. It automatically senses and dampens the effects of turbulence, providing a smoother ride that is more conducive to relaxing or working. The Active Turbulence Reduction system also helps make the Praetor 600 the most fuel-efficient aircraft in its class. The Praetor 600 is so efficient that it can

the Royal Ascot Insider

fly nonstop from London to Muscat or New York to Geneva on one tank of fuel, something that cannot be done in other super-midsize aircraft like the Bombardier Challenger 350. This fuel efficiency also allows passengers to fly knowing they have chosen an industry leader in sustainability for their travel needs. In fact, Embraer designed the Praetor 600 using its DIPAS (Integrated Development of Environmentally Sustainable Products) methodology, which evaluates a product’s sustainability for its entire lifecycle. Under this programme, technologies that reduce fuel consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and noise are favoured for further development. In the cabin, the Praetor 600 is equipped with class-exclusive Viasat Kaband and Gogo AVANCE L5 high-speed Wi-Fi to keep passengers connected to the world below them. Also, classexclusive in the Praetor 600 is Embraer’s touchscreen Upper Tech Panel that displays flight information and cabin management controls in an elegant, unobtrusive manner. Flexjet clients who fly on the new Praetor 600 can relax in a custom Red Label by Flexjet cabin knowing that an additional HEPA filter removes 99.97 percent of all particles in the air, including bacteria, viruses and fungi. These exceptional features and capabilities make the Praetor 600 a truly unique, groundbreaking aircraft. It rises above everything else in the traditional super-midsize category, while also offering better short field performance than large cabin aircraft. That’s why Flexjet is proud to make this aircraft available as part of our European fleet.

“Racing is a game for dreamers and occasionally dreams come true”’. Pyledriver is the living embodiment of that dream. He went into the race known as the Ascot Derby as a relatively unconsidered 18-1 shot in 2020, but nobody who watched the son of Harbour Watch take control inside the last two furlongs would ever under-estimate the bay colt again. The cheers of his owners and breeders could be heard all the way from their Welsh garden to the Royal Enclosure, watching footage of the horse that nobody wanted thumb his nose at the odds and the pundits’ predictions to gallop into Royal Ascot glory. As Guy Leach, who bred and owns Pyledriver with his brother Huw and their friend Devlin, remarked: ‘If there is one thing the story demonstrates, it is that there are always chances. We had a mare who we were told was of little value, with a foal who nobody wanted. As Johnny Murtagh said recently on ITV Racing, the Royal Ascot Insider

It’s this wonderful journey Pyledriver has taken us on right from the beginning,’ ‘It was an incredible thrill, fantastic for everybody involved with Pyledriver, and we are all delighted. It’s this wonderful journey Pyledriver has taken us on right from the beginning,’ explains Leach. ‘When he was born, La Pyle wouldn’t allow him to suckle for the first few days and everyone was very worried about him. get to the track and get a winner, but for Pyledriver to be a Royal Ascot and a Group 1 winner is beyond what we could have hoped for.’ This wonderful success is bittersweet for all those involved, tinged with poignancy at the absence of Kevin Mercer, the man who encouraged the Leach brothers and Devlin to breed from La Pyle when her racing career failed to pan out as an anticipated. Mercer, who owned Usk Valley Stud with his wife Susan, took a look at her pedigree and suggested rather than selling the mare, they retain La Pyle as a broodmare. Mercer also suggested they take a chance on Harbour Watch at Tweenhills Farm and Stud as the first stallion to breed La Pyle to, and when La Pyle foaled her colt and was unsure what her new role as a mother entailed, Mercer was on hand to guide the care of the first-time mother and her newborn foal,

82

@ascot |

but sadly died when Pyledriver was just three months old. That enquiry from Mercer over lunch set in train a glorious journey that has taken Pyledriver and his connections to places never imagined, and Leach is quick to acknowledge how the fates have smiled favourably on them.

‘Pyledriver is a lovely character as well and he continues to surprise us.’ ‘We are just the luckiest people in racing,’ he exclaims. ‘One mare, first foal; we just keep rolling the dice and we keep throwing a pair of sixes. There has been so much luck involved all the way along the line. A couple of months after La Pyle was covered by Harbour Watch her half-brother Mont Ormel won the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris and Kevin said to me at the time that we had won the breeding jackpot with our first throw of the dice.’

@ascotracecourse |

La Pyle remains the only broodmare owned by the trio and as Leach points out, ‘Why go looking for more mares when you have such a special one already? ‘She is the real star,’ he says of the ten-yearold mare. ‘Pyledriver is a lovely character as well and he continues to surprise us.’ Pyledriver will not be returning to Royal Ascot this year for the Hardwicke Stakes, the race coming too soon after his tenacious triumph in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes earlier this month, but the plan is for Pyledriver to take on the Derby winner in Ascot’s midsummer jewel, the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes next month. From a Welsh stable to the Royal Ascot winners’ enclosure, Pyledriver has been turning dreams into reality for his entire racing career and providing inspiration to the sport of dreamers.

On 27th May 2010, Rick was a month into his first tour of Afghanistan as a newly promoted Infantry Platoon Sergeant when he stepped on a Taliban IED. He lost his legs and much of his right arm in the blast. Rick praised the rescue team who took just nine minutes to reach him in a helicopter from Camp Bastion, saying: “I owe them my life”. It wasn’t just the physical injuries. I was stuck in a hospital bed for four months which is just boredom and you start thinking things.” We were able to support Rick with a grant towards a specialist wheelchair and a corner bath, and he is now an ambassador for our charity. Commander Mark Jones, Commanding Officer said, “Across this long and unique period, RNRMC has provided quite exceptional support and helped to take the edge off what has been an unprecedented deployment and extremely long period away.”

Foaled 8.3.2019. BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HH Won only narrowly at Newcastle (AW; 13-2) so it was no surprise to see her come up short under a penalty in the stronger company at Newmarket (good), won by the impressive Cachet; a good bit of imagination is needed to envisage her reversing those placings, even on 6lb better terms with the winner. Foaled 21.3.2019. BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HHHH Bought for 60,000gns at the breeze-ups and was tuned into the job in hand when coming home just over 5l to the good at Newmarket a month ago (6f, good; 4-1); hard to fault a debut performance like that and she’s strongly considered for a most progressive trainer who runs three; sire won a Group 1 on soft ground. Foaled 24.4.2019. BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HH Beat Wednesday’s Queen Mary winner Quick Suzy to score on debut at Tipperary (5f, yielding) and she probably bumped into one at The Curragh (6f, yielding) in a well-backed newcomer (unraced since) from a top yard; however, she had no excuses and RPR of 87 wasn’t much of a step up on her initial figure. BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HHH Withdrawn from Wednesday’s Queen Mary on account of fast ground so any rain would be welcomed; the ground was soft when she made light work of four rivals at Lingfield (5f ) a month ago and, while this represents a far sterner assignment over an additional furlong, if it did get wet her proven ability to handle Official BHA Rating conditions could count for plenty.

Foaled 25.2.2019. BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HHHH 125,000gns yearling; 7-4 favourite at Goodwood (6f, soft) and, after a slow start, she warmed to her task and came home very easily in the end, scoring by a little under 5l; co-trainer Ed Crisford was very complimentary afterwards and immediately nominated this as a likely target, also stressing that she might be even better on a quicker surface; very interesting under Frankie Dettori, who has ridden a Royal Ascot 2yo winner for this yard. BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HHH Left it late to book her ticket as she made her debut only last week at Goodwood (6f, good to firm; 7-1), where she narrowly prevailed in a sustained dual with the second (fellow newcomer); not easy to evaluate what she achieved but Topspeed/RPR figures bode fairly well and her trainer’s 2yos have been on fire all season; stable runs three. Foaled 1.3.2019. BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HHHHH Cost €350,000 as a yearling and she could not have impressed more when making a successful start at Wolverhampton (6f, AW) last month; holes can be picked in what she beat but the time was good and she looks potentially high class; sire gets winners on all ground and she’s out of a Pivotal mare, so hopes are high that she would handle softish ground if the rain has come. BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HHH Behind Sandrine on AW debut but has won both her starts since and she was particularly impressive (again ridden prominently) in the Woodcote at Epsom (6f, good) two weeks ago; armed with more experience than some of the shorter-priced fillies and Mark Crehan retains the ride; early indications suggest her rookie sire will produce soft-ground winners; one to consider. Foaled 1.2.2019. BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HHHH First foal out of three-time Group 1 winner Alice Springs; made all to beat two fillies who had the benefit of experience in a maiden over slightly shorter at Navan (yielding), and winning newcomers from this yard usually turn out to be decidedly smart; her dam did have a marked preference for fast ground, which adds a note of caution with thunderstorms about; much respected otherwise. BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HHHH Will stay further than this and it was her stamina that won the day over this trip when getting up in the closing stages at Kempton (AW), where dual subsequent winner Oscula was back in third; this stiffer track should play to her strengths and stablemate Berkshire Shadow won Tuesday’s Coventry after the solitary debut win; pedigree bodes well should the ground soften. Race Summary: This has the makings of a hot Albany with an array of unexposed winners locking horns, but the debut win of HELLO YOU takes some beating. It may have been only Wolverhampton but that venue has produced many a budding star down the years and she fairly whistled home in a good time. Prettiest wasn’t half as impressive at Navan but winning debutantes from her yard usually turn out to be smart and she’s bred to be something special. Flotus looked a prospect in turning some heads at Goodwood and Frankie rode a Norfolk winner for the yard two seasons ago, while Cachet and Sandrine can give their supporters some excitement. Race Summary: The forecast rain is a major positive for BELLOCCIO, who beat a subsequent Group 1 runner-up when winning a Listed race on soft ground in France last November and hasn’t had his ideal conditions in the Sandown Classic Trial or the Dante on his two runs this season. He is held in extremely high regard by David Menuisier, who saddled Wonderful Tonight to win a Group 1 here last October. If the ground isn’t on the slow side of good then Tasman Bay could be the one to be on, as he’s bumped into some classy types over 1m2f this year and promises to be suited by the step up to 1m4f. Alenquer beat the subsequent Derby winner Adayar at Sandown and is a strong contender, despite the runner-up finding a leap of improvement at Epsom, and the supplemented Ballydoyle runner The Mediterranean is also respected. Race Summary: Supremacy has a leading chance on ratings but he needs to bounce back from a disappointing effort in the Commonwealth Cup Trial. CAMPANELLE is preferred, as she remains unbeaten over sprint distances and one of her wins came at this meeting last year. She still has very low mileage and should have plenty more to offer. Exciting French challenger Suesa oozed class on her latest outing and is feared most. Dragon Symbol, Jumby, Measure Of Magic and Diligent Harry (in that order) may prove best of the remainder. 5 Race Summary: Having won by eight and a half lengths at Sandown two starts ago, URBAN VIOLET may not be stopped by today’s 10lb higher mark and her subsequent disappointing run there probably came too soon, just seven days later. Mamba Wamba is exposed compared to the rest of these but her associated toughness is a positive, as could be the step up to 1m, and she is second choice. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Samoot is another who could be suited by this new distance and she has accumulated a couple of wins this year despite still looking a work in progress. Glesga Gal has thrived in the blinkers and is also respected, along with C&D winner Teodolina, but there are loads of other dangers to consider as well, such as the unexposed fillies Camdeboo, Belief, Beheld, Riknnah and Companionship.

BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HHHH Won this in 2020 on soft off 4lb lower; has a lower draw this time but the task for Hollie Doyle has not changed, to plot a path from the rear which she did to such good effect 12 months ago; not in the best form over hurdles Official BHA Rating 101 this spring (ran on AW in the winter) but considered seriously today.

Race Summary: No horse drawn in single figures has won this race in the last ten years. Stylish last-time-out winners Aaddeey and QUICKTHORN headed early betting after the declarations were made and the vote goes to Quickthorn who registered his deeply impressive win on good to soft and probably has a bit less to prove if the rain has come in large quantities. Irish challenger Mirann, unlucky last time, is second on the list ahead of the redoubtable Zabeel Champion who is on a four-timer. Last year’s winner Scarlet Dragon will need the breaks again but he could put up another bold show, as could the lightly raced hat-trick seeker Valyrian Steel and mud-loving Win O’Clock. The Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes (Handicap) - continued

Race Summary: The prospect of thunderstorms ahead of racing, and the subsequent effect on the ground, adds further uncertainty to a tricky puzzle. It is slightly surprising that Warrior Brave isn’t a clear favourite after last weekend’s improved showing at Sandown and he is greatly respected, for all that slow ground would ask a new question of him. Noorban would have been very high on the list on fast ground but, with conditions set to change, it may pay to look elsewhere. Unexposed pair Equality and Boomshalaa will rightly have their supporters but the three who appeal most are Mo Celita, Significantly and DREAM COMPOSER. Significantly’s Newmarket second offers plenty of hope but Dream Composer is thriving, won’t mind the ground changing and leaves the impression that a well-run race at this trip could produce another surge of improvement. There is plenty of speed drawn middle to high and his talented apprentice may be able to produce him with a strong late burst. Race Predictor: WARRIOR BRAVE REBEL AT DAWN NOMADIC EMPIRE

Forecast: 7-1 Boomshalaa (GB), 8-1 Warrior Brave (GB), 10-1 Get It (GB), 11-1 Mo Celita (IRE), Dream Composer (FR), 12-1 Popmaster (IRE), 14-1 Nomadic Empire (IRE), Bedford Flyer (IRE), Equality (GB), Noorban (GB), Hey Mr (GB), 16-1 Caroline Dale (GB), Cooperation (IRE), 18-1 Significantly (GB), Rebel At Dawn (IRE), Operatic (IRE), 20-1 Charlie Fellowes (IRE), Dense Star (IRE), 25-1 Hala Hala Hala (IRE), Shalaa Asker (GB), Wings of A Dove (IRE), Fantasy Master (GB), 33-1 First Company (IRE), Desert Gulf (GB), 40-1 Baba Reza (GB)

What is your favourite Royal Ascot memory so far? Always tricky as its always your first win always sticks in your mind and I was lucky enough to ride two more straight after which was a lot to take in. I would have to say Big Orange winning the Gold Cup was absolutely incredible, the atmosphere afterwards was very special and something I will remember for a long time. The race you would most like to win this week? There are so many I would want to win but thinking about stallions and going forward I would have to say the St James’s Palace, I have been lucky enough to win it a couple of times already. If you could pick one horse to ride that you are not currently booked for, which horse would you choose and why? Lord North in the Prince of Wales’s. I was lucky to pick up the ride and win on him last year and he goes into the meeting after a very impressive win in the Dubai Turf and I think he will be the one to beat. Frankie has broken down on the way to Royal Ascot, do you:• Reroute and go and pick him up • Quickly get on the phone to your agent to offer your services for his rides I would have to pick him up. A couple of years ago when Frankie was injured I was lucky enough to pick up some of his rides including Big Orange so I owe it to him to pick him up. If you could pick to ride one Royal Ascot winner from the history books which horse would you pick and in which race? The 2011 St James’s Palace riding Frankel. I would of loved to experienced the power he had, he was the ultimate racehorse. the Royal Ascot Insider

@ascot |

You are able to invite five famous guests to Royal Ascot, who would you invite (past or present)? Peter Jones from Dragons’ Den so he can give me some ideas of what to do when I stop riding. Gordon Ramsay as I enjoy watching his shows, his straight-talking manor and his quick wit are brilliant. Elon Musk as it would be good to know what he thinks the world will be like in 25 years from now, although he may be a little boring. John Magnier as I would love to listen to his expert knowledge on our wonderful sport Sir Henry Cecil – no explanation needed… What is the last thing that goes through your mind when the starter is about to drop his flag? It all depends on the horse I am riding. I think about the tactics I want to employ and I am focused on getting all the little things right to give myself the best chance of winning. Do you have any raceday superstitions? If I have ridden a big winner on a horse before I try and keep everything the same, the equipment, the suit I wore on the day to the races, including the tie and shoes. Cream or jam first on a scone? I am not a massive fan of scones but if I had to eat one I would go cream first then jam. What makes Royal Ascot special? When you ride a winner there it is a feeling like no other. It is the Olympics of our sport. It just has everything, top quality racing, big crowds and an amazing atmosphere.
