wo Group 1 races provide the headline acts on the penultimate day of Royal Ascot. The ﬁrst of those is a relatively new addition to the programme, the Commonwealth Cup. Introduced at Group 1 level in 2015, this six furlong three-year-old only race was part of a wider initiative designed to enhance the sprinting programme in Europe. In that short period it has had some excellent winners including champion sprinter Muhaarar and Advertise who won the 2019 renewal which was the joint highest rated threeyear-old race in the world that year. The Coronation Stakes is the other Group 1 race on the card which brings together the form lines from the British, Irish and French 1,000 Guineas. Indeed, French trained horses have an excellent record in the race, winning three of the last

six renewals. The most recent filly to follow up from one of the Guineas is the brilliant Alpha Centauri who broke the track record when winning in 2018. Before the top-level action though is the Group 3 Albany Stakes for two-year-old fillies over six furlongs and the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes, still colloquially known as the Ascot Derby and often featuring horses that have run well in the Epsom Classic just two weeks earlier. Friday’s racing will involve a poignant moment as the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes is run for the first time since the passing of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh earlier in the year. There are many happy memories of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh at Ascot where he accompanied Her Majesty The Queen on so many occasions and shared in her successes.

One of the most memorable moments was in 2012 when His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh presented Her Majesty The Queen with the Queen’s Vase after Estimate’s victory. The race itself was renamed in honour of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh in 1999 and is a handicap run over a mile and a half. Last year it provided Hollie Doyle with her ﬁrst Royal Ascot winner when she partnered Scarlet Dragon to victory. The concluding Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes was new to the programme last year and is retained in the permanently extended programme. It is a ﬁve furlong sprint handicap for three-year-olds and the winner last year, Art Power, went on to Group level success.

A family affair

For trainer Eve Johnson Houghton, racing is very much a family aﬀair. Based at Woodway stables on the Berkshire downs where she grew up, her grandfather trained out this same yard; but only for ﬁve or so years. “My grandparents bought this place in 1945 or so, just after the war”, explains Eve. But in 1952 her father’s father, Gordon Johnson Houghton, died in a hunting accident. Her grandmother, Helen, took over the running of the yard – but in the 1950s, women were not allowed to take out a trainers licence.

The family still have some of the letters from the Jockey Club from that time. They are ”really vitriolic”, says Eve. “Saying how can you have him as a trainer, it’s in name only – we know he won’t be training the horses, and you’re a mere woman and you shouldn’t be allowed to do it. It was unbelievable language.” Fortunately, the Johnson Houghtons had support from within. “Luckily one of the senior stewards at the Jockey Club happened to be an owner and he sorted them out and they let her train” explains Eve. “So Fortunately, the she trained until my dad Johnson Houghtons had support from within. took over, under various people’s names”. One of these people was Charles Jerdein, and in 1956 their horse Gilles de Retz won the 2,000 guineas. Although the horse ran in his name, it is widely accepted

when he won the King George in 1978. In 2018, Eve caused a similar Royal Ascot upset when her horse Accidental Agent won the Queen Anne Stakes oﬀ a starting price of 33-1. That made Eve the fourth woman to train a domestic Group One winner – or the ﬁfth, if you include her grandmother Helen.

In 1961 Eve’s father, Fulke Johnson Houghton (named after his uncle, Fulke Walwyn – Helen’s twin brother, and a hugely successful National Hunt trainer in his own right) took over the running of the stable. “Dad had about twelve Royal Ascot To add to the family winners; he did very well relevance, Accidental at Ascot”, says Eve. “Even since I’ve had a licence, thing have changed so much” trains, it’s hard to imagine a more bucolic scene. “These gallops have never been ploughed”, she explains. “It’s only in the last thirty or forty years that they’ve actually been able to use downland for farming because it’s very poor soil – so all this beautiful downland has never been ploughed up at all.” Her father’s family have trained here since just after the second world war, while John Goldsmith (the Accidental Agent himself) trained “just over there’, says Eve, pointing. “But”, she adds, “he would have used these gallops.” The downs may have changed over the last century; now in addition to the 250 acres of grass 14

gallops, there is also a seven-furlong all weather. But at the turn of the century, this area was being used for cavalry drills; “I’ve seen a painting of it, and you can see the cavalry going from that wood there down into the valley”.

I took my licence out in 2007, and I was still very much a lone female. You

I got in touch with The Jockey Club Estates to ask if I could access the gallops to which they kindly obliged Within a couple of weeks of being out on the gallops, I was being asked for pictures by riders and trainers covering the behind the scenes work that goes into preparing the horses in training for racing. I decided to get organised and set up an Instagram account called @ horsesintraining to post my favourite image from each session out on the gallops and try and reach a larger audience that was in love with horse racing. And a route through to the galleries on my website where all can see the images from a session (now over 450 since starting). Little did I or the rest of the World know what would come next. I was supposed to be photographing polo in Thailand and had to return quickly on the 21st of March due to the virus escalating in China.

The more I get to learn, the more it has become a passion. Learning to understand the nuances of conformation, sex, age, pedigree and how every trainer has their unique methods. On the 23rd of March, the ﬁrst lockdown was announced, I lost all my client work planned and booked in - sports, hotels, behind-the-scenes, people, all cancelled! A total nightmare for a freelance creator. The only work I could do was go out onto the gallops as this complied with the government rules. The more I get to learn, the more it has become a passion. Learning to understand the nuances of 30

Most people never get to see the first staff turning up at 03:30, prepping the yard ready for the staff and riders to take the horses out at first lot. 05:40 seems to be the time right now, where the trainer along with his whole team of support staff, the rider’s and the professional jockeys you see on TV all turn up to ride work or exercise.

who gave me access to the gallops. The exercise riders, the jockeys, the trainers, all allowing me to observe and document the training. The support I've received from industry bodies and brands. The owners wanting to see pictures of their horses, especially as they couldn't leave their homes to come and visit during the lockdowns. It is a real privilege to be able to do this and share what goes on behind the scenes.

I'm quite often done taking my images by 09:30. These guys continue exercising all morning. I go back to my studio and start processing the photography. This can easily take all day and I try to get the new galleries live for early evening. When I post a new image to the Instagram account I can see 3,000+ people visiting the website over a 3-4 hour period. I'm truly amazed so many people enjoy seeing this work.

I see the expressions in horses faces and bodies when they train and I see the love given daily by the riders, the people who spend the most time with them. I'm proud to be associated with the sport. I intend to keep on showcasing how amazing these beautiful animals are and the work that goes into preparing them for racing.

nd it’s that sense of dazzlement, of ﬁnery on parade, and of British tradition at its best, that has helped turn Ascot into a byword of formality and splendour. To think of Ascot – and its series of races and the diﬀerent dress rules that apply to each enclosure – is to conjure images of morning suits in all their immaculate glory, of glossy top hats glinting in the summer sun and a studious respect for Dress Codes which is so lacking in other facets of society today. Even Henry Higgins fell somewhat short; “you’re not even dressed for Ascot” chides his mother. “I changed my shirt,” is his response. “I very much enjoy Royal Ascot’s Dress Codes,” says Ed Chamberlin of ITV’s racing coverage team. “It’s traditional and quintessentially British, but it has also moved with the times. Ascot prides

With the world on hold these past 18 months thanks to the pandemic, the social events that once governed ‘the English season’ were non-existent, and with no offices or formal functions to attend, the rigours around gentlemanly dress have waned somewhat, understandably. Savile Row has reported huge losses, and some devastating closures, as our demand and need for suits became obsolete. However, with a slated return to offices from the 21st June in Britain, and Royal Ascot going ahead in physical form, it’s never been more pertinent for men to enjoy the ceremony of dressing up once more. And never has that been more in evidence throughout history than at Royal Ascot. Because men’s attire has always been a crucial ingredient in making Royal Ascot such a show of sartorial force. It was actually Beau Brummel, the original dandy who defined flamboyant, peacocking dress in the 19th century - and who is so synonymous with sartorialism that his statue stands on Jermyn St today - that was integral in setting up its gentlemanly Dress Codes, working with the then Prince Regent to decree that black coats and white cravats with pantaloons should be worn to the

Royal Meeting. This, for the uninitiated, is the most formal and swaggering of all the diﬀerent races. There are various enclosures within the racecourse, but the Royal Enclosure is, as one might expect, the most august and primly upright in its formality; full morning suit with a waistcoat is a must, with a black or grey top hat. Black shoes only, if you please - never brown, which denotes country pursuits instead of more decorous occasions - and in 2018 a rule was announced to counteract the rise of the ‘mankle’; bare ankles on men were deemed inappropriate. There has been little altering to the mores of the Dress Code for men in the Royal Enclosure over the centuries, but minor adjustments and nods to the prevailing winds of trends have occasionally been permitted.

This year, headlines were made when the Dress Code allowed for navy to join the standard black and grey shades of morning suits, an acknowledgement of a more corporate, City-centric form of tailoring that modern men have become accustomed to. Similarly, more ‘playful’ elements are allowed – for example printed or patterned ties and pocket

squares or eye-catching cuﬄinks – providing they are not novelty. What icons of Royal Ascot past might have thought are anyone’s guess; archive photography of the Royal Family in attendance show the Duke of York, who would become King George in 1907, stately in black, a bustle of Edwardian ladies in full plumage alongside him. In the 1930s, the Duke of Windsor attended alongside Wallis Simpson looking pinsharp in a steely grey top hat. Images of the recently departed Duke of Edinburgh show him in grey morning dress and hat, with little more than a striped club tie as decoration, while Prince Charles throughout his Royal Ascot attendance has stuck to sombre black in his early years, segueing into light grey with complementing lilacs and blues accessories later in life.

All of which begs the question; how should you dress for this most proper of occasions? Oliver Spencer, founder of Ascot’s official morning suit outfitters Favourbrook, has some words of advice. “We’ve all adapted to the online world,” says Spencer. “But in this instance, it’s really crucial that it’s physically fitted properly in store. Fortunately, Oliver Brown proprietor Kristian Robson has some insights; “first of all, it’s important to wear it correctly,” says Robson, who oversees the historic house and official top hat supplier of the event. “It must be flat on the head, an inch above the ears, never tilted backwards or forwards.” Similarly, it’s important not to turn the hat upside down if taken off - it can damage the crown. The shape, says Robson, should be tall rather than short, and the best fabric in most circumstances is silk. “It just has such a lovely lustre and when polished the shine really reflects the light, it’s very elegant to see,” says the owner. t all began more than 300 years ago, in 1711, when the ﬁrst horse races were staged on a piece of heathland that Queen Anne had identiﬁed as a suitable place to run horses. On Saturday 11th August of that year, seven horses lined up to compete for the inaugural ‘Her Majesty’s Plate’.

That piece of heathland has evolved into one of the world’s most iconic sporting theatres. Ascot’s ﬁrst four-day event, from which the formal ‘Royal’ Ascot meeting would eventually spring, took place in 1768. In 1825, King George IV suggested that the reigning monarch could travel in a horse-drawn carriage from the racecourse’s Golden Gates, and down the Straight Mile, to open Royal Ascot each day. And so the Royal Procession – one of Royal Ascot’s most famous and beloved traditions – was born. 1910’s Royal Meeting, which came a few weeks after the death of King Edward VII, became known as ‘Black Ascot’. Racegoers attended in mourning attire as a mark of respect to the late monarch, who occupies a place in Ascot’s history as one of its most passionate supporters.

Legendary ownerbreeder Prince Khalid Abdullah died aged 83 at the beginning of this year. His legacy in the sport stretches far and wide with his famous green, white and pink silks carried to victory by so many of the sport’s great horses.

Those three races were not run at Group 1 level at the time though and his first top-level success at Royal Ascot came in 2001 when Banks Hill, trained by Andre Fabre, won the Coronation Stakes. Fabre was also responsible for Byword, who won the 2010 Prince of Wales’s Stakes, leading home a memorable 1-2 in the Group 1 feature race on the Wednesday for Prince Khalid with Twice Over second. In 2011 he was Champion Owner for the third and final time helped of course by Frankel in his threeyear-old career under the guidance of Sir Henry Cecil. Having blown the field away in the 2,000 Guineas he arrived at Royal Ascot for the St James’s Palace Stakes as a red-hot favourite to extend his unbeaten run to a perfect seven. All seemed to be going to plan as Tom Queally sent him to the front and he was six lengths clear with two furlongs to run. It turned out to be a dramatic finish though as Zoffany stayed on strongly and got to within three parts of a length of Frankel who just held on.

He returned a year later as a four-year-old to contest the Queen Anne Stakes and produced one of the most jaw-dropping performances ever seen at Royal Ascot. Positioned perfectly behind his pace maker, Bullet Train, Queally edged Frankel to the front from the halfway point before he opened up in stunning style to produce a brilliant 11 length victory. Frankel continues to have an impact on the sport through his progeny and he recorded a ﬁrst Royal Ascot winner as a sire when Without Parole won the St James’s Palace Stakes in 2018

Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum at Royal Ascot

n 2020 he was crowned leading owner at Royal Ascot for the first time with six individual winners, all partnered by his retained jockey Jim Crowley. His final winner at the Royal Meeting was Khaloosy, trained by Roger Varian, which took is total number of Royal Ascot winners to 46. The first of those came in 1985 when Al Bahathri won the Coronation Stakes. Sent off the 4/6 favourite she stumbled on the turn for home but jockey Tony Murray managed to get her balanced again and she won by a length for trainer Henry Thomson Jones. His most memorable Royal Ascot winner for many will be Dayjur, the quite brilliant sprinter who lit up the Royal Meeting when winning the King’s the Royal Ascot Insider

he 14-year-old gelding, by Danehill Dancer, was trained by Richard Hannon Senior and, following a career-ending injury, went to Louise Robson at the age of ﬁve. Louise specialises in retraining retired racehorses and runs Thoroughbred Dressage in Buckinghamshire. She was invited to Windsor Castle to try “Quad” and initially felt that he would only be a “low-level dressage horse as his movement was not anything exciting”. However, as she has joked, “I couldn’t say “no” to The Queen!” - and the horse has gone on to confound her expectations.

get to the track and get a winner, but for Pyledriver to be a Royal Ascot and a Group 1 winner is beyond what we could have hoped for.’ This wonderful success is bittersweet for all those involved, tinged with poignancy at the absence of Kevin Mercer, the man who encouraged the Leach brothers and Devlin to breed from La Pyle when her racing career failed to pan out as an anticipated. Mercer, who owned Usk Valley Stud with his wife Susan, took a look at her pedigree and suggested rather than selling the mare, they retain La Pyle as a broodmare. Mercer also suggested they take a chance on Harbour Watch at Tweenhills Farm and Stud as the ﬁrst stallion to breed La Pyle to, and when La Pyle foaled her colt and was unsure what her new role as a mother entailed, Mercer was on hand to guide the care of the ﬁrst-time mother and her newborn foal,

but sadly died when Pyledriver was just three months old. That enquiry from Mercer over lunch set in train a glorious journey that has taken Pyledriver and his connections to places never imagined, and Leach is quick to acknowledge how the fates have smiled favourably on them.

‘Pyledriver is a lovely character as well and he continues to surprise us.’ ‘We are just the luckiest people in racing,’ he exclaims. ‘One mare, ﬁrst foal; we just keep rolling the dice and we keep throwing a pair of sixes. There has been so much luck involved all the way along the line. A couple of months after La Pyle was covered by Harbour Watch her half-brother Mont Ormel won the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris and Kevin said to me at the time that we had won the breeding jackpot with our ﬁrst throw of the dice.’

La Pyle remains the only broodmare owned by the trio and as Leach points out, ‘Why go looking for more mares when you have such a special one already? ‘She is the real star,’ he says of the ten-yearold mare. ‘Pyledriver is a lovely character as well and he continues to surprise us.’ Pyledriver will not be returning to Royal Ascot this year for the Hardwicke Stakes, the race coming too soon after his tenacious triumph in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes earlier this month, but the plan is for Pyledriver to take on the Derby winner in Ascot’s midsummer jewel, the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes next month. From a Welsh stable to the Royal Ascot winners’ enclosure, Pyledriver has been turning dreams into reality for his entire racing career and providing inspiration to the sport of dreamers.

Rick’s Story Rick served in the Duke of Lancaster’s’ Regiment for 16 years, until an operational injury ended his Army career.

ick joined the Army just before his 17th birthday. He served for 16 years, rising to the rank of Sergeant and travelling all over the world, including operational tours of Iraq and Afghanistan. On 27th May 2010, Rick was a month into his ﬁrst tour of Afghanistan as a newly promoted Infantry Platoon Sergeant when he stepped on a Taliban IED. He lost his legs and much of his right arm in the blast. Rick praised the rescue team who took just nine minutes to reach him in a helicopter from Camp Bastion, saying: “I owe them my life”. Three weeks later, he woke up in hospital in Birmingham to discover the damage the blast had caused. “It wasn’t until I woke up that I realised the extent of my injuries. It wasn’t just the physical injuries. I was stuck in a hospital bed for four months which is just boredom and you start thinking things.” We were able to support Rick with a grant towards a specialist wheelchair and a corner bath, and he is now an ambassador for our charity. He says: “The 86

mountain trike wheelchair has changed my life. For the ﬁrst time in eight years I was able to go on the beach. Prior to having the bath seat I was unable to have a bath. If someone told you, ‘You’re not gonna have a bath for the rest of your life’ then it’s not a little thing. All of a sudden, it’s a big thing. So it’s life changing stuﬀ, it really is. of serving sailors and marines during COVID-19 During the pandemic, The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity have vowed to provide additional support.

ith lockdown and quarantine restrictions, many personnel are ﬁnding themselves separated from loved ones for longer periods than normal, sometimes simple gestures can be enough to make a diﬀerence, as the RNRMC have found through the provision of takeaway pizzas and special pre-deployment meals to various ships’ companies and units. 4Gsimcards were provided to the Crew of HMS Montrose, stuck on board in the Middle East during several weeks of maintenance alongside, to allow them to make video calls home to loved one, alleviating concerns about how their families were coping during lockdown.

RNRMC supported the crew of submarine HMS Vigilant, with grants to improve mess facilities, a TV and PlayStation for the Support Crew Office recreation space, a new dart board and by funding morale boosting activities such as a Lockdown BBQ, quarantine takeaway night and Christmas hampers for their loved ones. Commander Mark Jones, Commanding Officer said, “Across this long and unique period, RNRMC has provided quite exceptional support and helped to take the edge off what has been an unprecedented deployment and extremely long period away.”

5 Race Summary: Having won by eight and a half lengths at Sandown two starts ago, URBAN VIOLET may not be stopped by today’s 10lb higher mark and her subsequent disappointing run there probably came too soon, just seven days later. Mamba Wamba is exposed compared to the rest of these but her associated toughness is a positive, as could be the step up to 1m, and she is second choice. Race Summary: The prospect of thunderstorms ahead of racing, and the subsequent effect on the ground, adds further uncertainty to a tricky puzzle. It is slightly surprising that Warrior Brave isn’t a clear favourite after last weekend’s improved showing at Sandown and he is greatly respected, for all that slow ground would ask a new question of him. Noorban would have been very high on the list on fast ground but, with conditions set to change, it may pay to look elsewhere. Unexposed pair Equality and Boomshalaa will rightly have their supporters but the three who appeal most are Mo Celita, Signiﬁcantly and DREAM COMPOSER. Signiﬁcantly’s Newmarket second offers plenty of hope but Dream Composer is thriving, won’t mind the ground changing and leaves the impression that a well-run race at this trip could produce another surge of improvement. What is your favourite Royal Ascot memory so far? Always tricky as its always your ﬁrst win always sticks in your mind and I was lucky enough to ride two more straight after which was a lot to take in. I would have to say Big Orange winning the Gold Cup was absolutely incredible, the atmosphere afterwards was very special and something I will remember for a long time. The race you would most like to win this week? There are so many I would want to win but thinking about stallions and going forward I would have to say the St James’s Palace, I have been lucky enough to win it a couple of times already. If you could pick one horse to ride that you are not currently booked for, which horse would you choose and why? Lord North in the Prince of Wales’s. I was lucky to pick up the ride and win on him last year and he goes into the meeting after a very impressive win in the Dubai Turf and I think he will be the one to beat. Frankie has broken down on the way to Royal Ascot, do you:• Reroute and go and pick him up • Quickly get on the phone to your agent to offer your services for his rides I would have to pick him up. A couple of years ago when Frankie was injured I was lucky enough to pick up some of his rides including Big Orange so I owe it to him to pick him up. If you could pick to ride one Royal Ascot winner from the history books which horse would you pick and in which race? The 2011 St James’s Palace riding Frankel. You are able to invite five famous guests to Royal Ascot, who would you invite (past or present)? Peter Jones from Dragons’ Den so he can give me some ideas of what to do when I stop riding. Gordon Ramsay as I enjoy watching his shows, his straight-talking manor and his quick wit are brilliant. Elon Musk as it would be good to know what he thinks the world will be like in 25 years from now, although he may be a little boring. John Magnier as I would love to listen to his expert knowledge on our wonderful sport Sir Henry Cecil – no explanation needed… What is the last thing that goes through your mind when the starter is about to drop his flag? It all depends on the horse I am riding. I think about the tactics I want to employ and I am focused on getting all the little things right to give myself the best chance of winning. Do you have any raceday superstitions? If I have ridden a big winner on a horse before I try and keep everything the same, the equipment, the suit I wore on the day to the races, including the tie and shoes. Cream or jam first on a scone? I am not a massive fan of scones but if I had to eat one I would go cream first then jam. What makes Royal Ascot special? When you ride a winner there it is a feeling like no other. It is the Olympics of our sport. It just has everything, top quality racing, big crowds and an amazing atmosphere.
