he final day of Royal Ascot is headlined by the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, the last of three Group 1 sprints run at the Royal Meeting.
Over six furlongs, it used to be known as the Cork and Orrery Stakes before it was given a new name – the Golden Jubilee Stakes – and elevated to Group 1 status in 2002 to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Ten years later it assumed the mantle of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and it was won that year by the brilliant globetrotting mare Black Caviar from Australia. This year will be the last running of the race as the Diamond Jubilee before it is renamed
the Royal Ascot Insider
again to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in 2022. During the past ten years it has had some excellent winners including Undrafted for Wesley Ward from America and Blue Point, who was completing the sprint double with the King’s Stand in 2019. The Hardwicke Stakes over a mile and a half is often a Group 2 in name only as it attracts lots of high-class horses who have King George aspirations later in the summer. The other Group contest on the card is the Group 3 Jersey Stakes which is over seven furlongs for three-year-olds who have not yet won at Group 1 or 2 level. Often as a result it attracts the Guineas placed horses
and so can be extremely competitive. The Golden Gates Stakes was new to the programme last year and is retained this year as part of the permanently expanded programme. This one mile, two furlong handicap for three-year-olds was won by Highland Chief in 2020 who went on to be placed at Group 2 level. As is tradition, the Queen Alexandra Stakes rounds out the Royal Meeting. The marathon two-and-three-quartermile trip is the longest race run in Britain under Flat racing rules and is often well-supported by regulars in the race.

The O’Brien Family’s Winning Tradition
The surname O'Brien finds its roots in the Irish 'O'Briain', meaning descendant of Brian Boru, the 11th Century High King of Ireland. So there was perhaps a certain predestiny at play in how a family carrying this noble name have come to be such vital protagonists at the Royal Meeting.

Tight-knit, humble, and exceedingly good at what they do, this remarkable racing family are recognised and respected globally for their exploits among the ultra-competitive elite of world racing.
And in fact the O’Brien family history at British racing’s most famous Flat festival can be traced back even further, with Annemarie’s father Joseph Crowley having trained the talented filly Ravaro to finish second in the Queen Alexandra Stakes in the 1980s. Aged 51, it can be anticipated that Aidan could yet welcome many more winners into Ascot’s iconic Parade Ring, further burnishing an already lustrous family name. What is your greatest memory of Royal Ascot as a jockey? So You Think winning the Prince of Wales was a huge day for me. There was a lot of pressure on as he was a very high-profile horse worldwide. I hadn’t ridden a winner at Royal Ascot at all before that. To win a race like the Prince of Wales, which is arguably the biggest race of the week, on a horse like him that had a worldwide following and for my Dad was very special. Where does Royal Ascot figure in your plans now that you are a trainer? Royal Ascot is a very popular target with owners. I haven’t had a winner at the Royal meeting just yet, even if we haven’t had a huge amount of runners, but it’s a monkey we need to get off our back soon. We will certainly be doing our best to have a winner at Royal Ascot this year. If you have a horse that’s able to go there with a legitimate chance then it’s somewhere everyone wants to compete, no matter where they are from around the world. Grandad had a filly Ravaro who was just beaten into second in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot and Dad has been very lucky there over the years. So it would be very special to have a winner at the meeting and it is something we are going to be doing our very best to achieve sooner rather than later. How does it feel to compete against your father and your brother as a trainer on the global stage? Is there good banter between you? There is good banter between us, but the long and short of it is that the three of us realise how difficult it is to compete at this level. We will all hopefully be going to Royal Ascot with some runners each this year and all doing our best. We will be very happy if any of us can get their head in front, so we are very excited and looking forward to the meeting. What is your squad looking like for Royal Ascot 2021? It’s early days at this stage but it looks like I might have a couple of two-yearolds, a few horses for the Handicaps, and a few for the races for older horses as well, so we hope to be well represented and it would be a very special day if we could get a winner.

Three of the best Horses trained under the O’Brien family banner have lit up Royal Ascot for over two decades. Relive the exploits of three of their most remarkable equine athletes:
GIANT’S CAUSEWAY – St James’s Palace Stakes, 2000 Giant’s Causeway’s St James’s Palace Stakes victory in the year 2000 was Aidan O’Brien’s first Group One at the Royal Meeting. The US-bred colt showed his customary determination to take the win under Mick Kinane, kicking off a run of five successive Group One successes. Not out of the first two in 13 starts, 10 of which were at Group One level, he certainly earned his nickname as ‘The Iron Horse’. Giant’s Causeway went on to a successful career at stud, notably siring Shamardal, who himself won the 2005 St James’s Palace, which was run at York due to Ascot’s redevelopment.

YEATS – Ascot Gold Cup, 2006-2009 Named after one of Ireland’s most influential poets, this handsome and hardy son of the great Sadler’s Wells wrote racing history when taking four consecutive Ascot Gold Cups, a feat that had not been achieved in the race’s 200-year history. A bronze of this great stayer now graces both the Ascot parade ring and the gates of Coolmore Stud, for whom Yeats now stands as a successful National Hunt stallion. Having taken the last three editions of this famous race, can the mighty Stradivarius emulate Yeats by making it four in a row in 2021? SO YOU THINK – Prince of Wales’s Stakes, 2012 Already a five-time Group One winner when trained by Bart Cummings in Australia, So You Think arrived at Ballydoyle with a titanic reputation. This striking dark bay’s talent, looks, and presence had captured the racing world’s imagination from day one. Having been beaten a neck in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes in 2011, he scored in style in the same race a year later under an ultra-cool Joseph O’Brien. A picture for the family photo album, one would imagine.

I had been riding horses when I was a teenager and during my Animal Science studies in Poland I had a chance to go to the USA to do an internship at Juddmonte Farms in Kentucky. It is where my passion for thoroughbreds was started. Since then I have been working with thoroughbreds in New Zealand, Germany and finally I settled in France and became a horse racing photographer.

Being around horses I always have a camera with me. Seeing a beautiful horse in a beautiful light always causes butterflies in my stomach. Photography allows me to capture those moments, immortalise and take them home with me. Horses are magnificent animals, powerful, gentle, intelligent and they move with incredible grace weighing a half a ton at the same time! It is so easy to fall in love with them. Thanks to photography I had a chance to travel to the biggest meetings in Europe with Royal Ascot being the highlight of the year.

érard Bertrand is a former international rugby player. During his illustrious career he played for Narbonne, captained the Stade Français and represented France internationally. In addition, since 1987 he has built up an eponymous winemaking empire within the Languedoc-Roussillon region. From inheriting his family’s single winemaking estate, the Gérard Bertrand Group now encompasses 16 estates, and over 880 hectares of biodynamically cultivated land, as well as a hotel and gourmet restaurant at Château l’Hospitalet. His wines have been recognised internationally for their excellence, in 2020 the ‘Clos Du Temple 2019’ was awarded the best rosé wine in the world by the Global Rosé Masters. advocate might not be the most straightforward to an outsider, but both rugby and winemaking are in Bertrand’s blood. He was born and grew up in the Corbières area, within the region of LanguedocRoussillon. Bertrand describes the passion for rugby in the area as being ‘like a religion’. From a very early age he played rugby ‘all day long’ with his relatives, and assisted his father, Georges Bertrand, on the family vineyard at Château de Villemajou. How does he think his experience as a sportsman influenced his career in wine? “Rugby has had a strong influence in my life because I believe rugby is a ‘school of life’. It develops friendship and team spirit, and a way of working together for something bigger, it is also a source of humility. It is important to chase your fear, to become yourself. You discover your soul, your spirit and it reinforces your will to compete and to celebrate.” After the death of his father in 1987, when Bertrand was just 22 years old, he began to run the family estate in parallel the Royal Ascot Insider

with his burgeoning rugby career. This meant fitting the rigors of the sport around working 60 hour weeks in the vineyard. He believes this early experience was foundational. He says, “you learn the habits to deal with the challenge. It is really something I have in my blood – I never give up, because I know there is always a way to be successful. This is the rugby legacy I received, and I am proud of that.” In 1994 he retired from the sport to focus solely on wine. Was it always his ambition to create an empire, or was it something that developed over time? “No, honestly when I started I was focussed 38

on the family estate and my rugby career. The ambition came to me when I stopped playing rugby in 1995 after a visit to Napa Valley. I visited all the most important wine makers in that area. I was also influenced by Robert Mondavi. When I got the chance to meet him, I discovered the potential of the ‘Wine Experience’.” With his pride in his own terroir, Bertrand was convinced that it could become a wine tourism destination in the same mould as Napa Valley. Thus he began to build the idea of the ‘South of France’ as a foremost European wine tourism destination, uniting Languedoc-Roussillon and Pays d’Oc. However, @ascotracecourse |
Bertrand asserts that the desire to create exceptional wine was always his first ambition. “I have always chased excellence in terms of quality. My first passion was, and still is, to make blends, and to create wine. I learnt a lot from my father who was a genius in terms

The last year, as for many, has provided some pause for thought. Over the course of the last year Bertrand has written and published a new book, ‘La Nature au Coeur’ (Nature at Heart). The book details Bertrand’s philosophy for a better world, working in harmony with nature, and the importance of biodiversity. The book will be published in the UK in February 2022. Finally, I ask what are Bertrand’s plans for the future, and that of his growing

Daisy opened The Deck London, a made-to-measure Tailoring House exclusively for women on Savile Row and I was hooked from the go. On the gal and her vision, her joie de vivre and the energy she pours into changing the face of womenswear one beautiful stitch at a time. Daisy Knatchbull in a Huntsman of Savile Row morning suit

She flitted into our lives like a beautiful butterfly in between jet-setting around the world, first assisting her famous trainer father Luca and then as Francesca Cumani, presenter for Channel 7 Australia. Little did I to know then that she would end up so much in my life as a firm friend, client and muse. Her knowledge of horse racing, charm and star quality has brought so much to the ITV Racing coverage. oyal Ascot claims its impressive title by virtue of its close associations with the British Royal Family and its 179 acres are leased from the Crown Estate. The male members wear their top hats with aplomb it has to be said, be it sleek black or natty grey. But it is the fairer sex whose millinery choices are magical. The Queen’s headband style in the 1960s was aeons ahead of today’s obsession with fabric crowns while Princess Margaret never shied away from statement headpieces either. These days the modern Princesses Eugenie & Beatrice carry off wide brims so elegantly while the Duchess of Cambridge deserves a special mention. Her style is lauded the world over and with good reason. Effortless and elegant, graceful and individual, Catherine is the pinup on how to abide by the rules on your own terms. Her millinery choices have put British milliners on the map as well as British designers. When the Duchess joins the Royal Procession the excitement and anticipation of what she will be wearing is palpable. For me a standout look is a look that stands the test of time. Oh to have been a gal about town in the high days of the 60s and 70s in London and catch a glimpse of Grace Kelly at the meeting in 1967 - perfection. Her “flower-power” dress is so typical of the era and yet one that if worn today would rival any contemporary designer. Grace Kelly at Ascot in 1967

ny fashion commentary would not be complete without a nod to the brave and the bold. And who in the history of the Royal Meeting can rival Mrs. Gertrude Shilling in terms of novelty and spectacle? Her ensembles are deserving of a dedicated piece to do them justice – giraffes, peacocks, flowers & teacups - no subject was too much of a stretch for this nonpareil. Her son David was her personal outfitter “The outfits I made for my mother were really theatre rather than fashion. The early ones were quite extraordinary, three and four feet high, the product of a child’s imagination”. The confidence to carry these off must have been only rivalled the energy required to carry them!
As Karl Lagerfeld once said, "black and white always looks modern, whatever that word means." Yes Royal Ascot is typically a riot of colour and hazy summer days lend themselves to a sea of florals, pastels and vivid hues. But for me some of the most iconic looks are plain old monochrome and as Lagerfeld rightly said, somehow stay modern. Flicking

A vision in an impeccable monochrome trouser suit paired with a sensational twisted turban gliding through the crowd of samey floral frocks and wide brimmed hats. Who was this elegant creature? Valerie Stark! She positively oozed glamour and it turned out, business nous too. It takes serious insouciance & confidence to choose a look that bucks the trend but my god, Valerie had this in spades that day. In the wise words of Coco Chanel “I have said that black has it all. Thus far I have omitted florals as for me they rarely translate into a showstopping, stand-out-from-the-crowd outfit. That said, a simple floral number paired with a piece of millinery magic, elevates a look from mainstream to breath-taking. Georgia Toffolo in 2019 was resplendent in a dainty floral frock paired with an apple green skull cap. Milliner Lisa Tan in a hat of her own design colour blocked and floral clashed with aplomb. A look I wore in 2018 received so much praise that I have subsequently worn it twice more - a shocking pink Martha Lynn hat that matched my skirt, with a dash of blooms in between. s my grandmother used to say, “self praise is no praise”…that said I hope I might be forgiven for a shameless plug to sign off. Every single time I have pinned my Royal Ascot badge in place I have been clad in ‘second-hand” fashion. Be it a 1950s ombre pastel number or a £4 silk skirt from a charity shop layered over a hemline that would make the stewards blush. My frocks are complimented by British & Irish contemporary milliners, blending old & new and hopefully demonstrating that good design stands up no matter what. It gave me such joy to see vintage and second-hand make the cut for the hallowed Royal Ascot Style Guide this year and I hope to see many a beauty waft around Ascot in sustainable style! Increased opportunities for fans to learn more about thoroughbreds and join the thoroughbred breeding community.
O
pening doors to the thoroughbred industry: The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association CEO Claire Sheppard discusses the initiatives increasing access for fans and newcomers. Royal Ascot is the epitome of the Flat racing calendar - whether it be for the high-quality racing action seen on the track or the pageantry that is also in evidence at the Royal meeting. Nothing beats the thrill of the horse you have backed, whether it be through form, pedigree, name or silk colours, hitting the line in front. Each of the horses running over the course of the week were created through the deliberations and decisions made by their breeders. It is the interests of the British breeders that concerns the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, whose remit is to safeguard the health and welfare of the thoroughbred. However, as Chief Executive Claire Sheppard explains, the association is not exclusively for breeders, but open to all. “The TBA provides people with an interest in the thoroughbred breeding and the bloodstock side of the sport a chance to get involved through various initiatives, resources and events. “We noticed there was appetite from people who do not currently breed racehorses including racing fans, students and industry professionals to join our events and learn more about

our industry. “We’re very keen to welcome new people to the thoroughbred breeding community and so to facilitate this we created a new affordable subscription which focussed on the benefits which are meaningful to enthusiasts. “The TBA Associate tier offers access to a number of benefits including the broad calendar of TBA events, regular TBA and industry news updates, digital Thoroughbred Owner Breeder subscription, free online webinars and resources on TB-Ed (The TBA’s digital learning website), educational bursaries and our National Horseracing Museum discounts.” Much like Royal Ascot is a social occasion, the TBA hosts a number of events throughout the calendar year, which are always well received and well attended. These events provide the ideal opportunity for members at all levels to communicate with each other, sharing ideas and concepts, which in turn furthers the knowledge base. “Covid-19 meant that a number of our social events were cancelled last year, but we are looking forward to bringing back the popular annual awards evenings and regional events which include behind the scenes visits to some of the leading stud farms, racing yards and veterinary hospitals,” says Sheppard. “Providing an entry point to the community for fans with no previous experience or connection is one of

our key priorities as we explore new, more affordable ways for people to get involved in thoroughbred breeding including clubs, partnerships, and syndicates where people can share the joy of following their horses from birth. “There’s a lot of work to be done, but we hope that creating the Associate subscription provides a gateway for fans to learn more about the industry, gain a deeper understanding of the breed and join our friendly community at our events. “Our welcoming team at Stanstead House are happy to speak with anyone interested in getting involved in the thoroughbred breeding industry, and can answer any questions you may have on Associate and Full Membership options.” the Royal Ascot Insider

The Associate subscription is a great way to foster and develop your interest in thoroughbred breeding, which may then develop further down the line, as Sheppard notes: “We also have some great free resources to help those thinking about investing in a broodmare, such as our digital Broodmare Ownership Guide and Broodmare Ownership webinar which provides a good overview of the key considerations and options depending on a person’s experience, budget and available time.” For more information about the TBA and how you can get involved, visit www.thetba.co.uk. Ascot
Over three centuries Ascot has both set and raised the standard for racecourses. It has evolved from the far-sighted vision of a Queen from a distant era into a byword for horse racing of the highest quality. The palpable sense of glamour, pageantry and history, underpinned by Ascot’s outstanding modern facilities, offers an experience like no other. 58

t all began more than 300 years ago, in 1711, when the first horse races were staged on a piece of heathland that Queen Anne had identified as a suitable place to run horses. On Saturday 11th August of that year, seven horses lined up to compete for the inaugural ‘Her Majesty’s Plate’.
That piece of heathland has evolved into one of the world’s most iconic sporting theatres. Ascot’s first four-day event, from which the formal ‘Royal’ Ascot meeting would eventually spring, took place in 1768. In 1825, King George IV suggested that the reigning monarch could travel in a horse-drawn carriage from the racecourse’s Golden Gates, and down the Straight Mile, to open Royal Ascot each day. And so the Royal Procession – one of Royal Ascot’s most famous and beloved traditions – was born. 1910’s Royal Meeting, which came a few weeks after the death of King Edward VII, became known as ‘Black Ascot’. Racegoers attended in mourning attire as a mark of respect to the late monarch, who occupies a place in Ascot’s history as one of its most passionate supporters.
middle-distance races in Europe, and since 2011 Ascot has hosted QIPCO British Champions Day – the starstudded championship finale to the Flat season. The Queen’s Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees have all been celebrated at Royal Ascot. In 2006, Her Majesty opened a new Grandstand, heralding a new era for the racecourse and consolidating its position as one of the finest racing venues in the world. From Frankel to Black Caviar and from Yeats to Brigadier Gerard, Ascot has crowned so many champions across so many eras. It’s been some story so far, and we can’t wait to find out what the next chapters hold. A History Of Ascot

hose horses often came to the fore at Royal Ascot with the likes of Kingman, Byword, Banks Hill, Danehill and of course the incomparable Frankel carrying his colours to victory.
Prince Khalid Abdullah owned 41 Royal Ascot winners in total, starting with Abeer in the 1979 Queen Mary Stakes, his first Group winner. That was just two years after he purchased his first yearlings which kick-started his plans for @ascotracecourse |
what would become an international breeding operation. The Royal Ascot winners flowed fairly regularly from the early 1980s, including a remarkable six at the 1989 Royal Meeting. They included several of the highest profile races with Warning in the Queen Anne Stakes, Two Timing in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and Danehill in the then Cork and Orrery Stakes (now the Diamond Jubilee Stakes).

Those three races were not run at Group 1 level at the time though and his first top-level success at Royal Ascot came in 2001 when Banks Hill, trained by Andre Fabre, won the Coronation Stakes. Fabre was also responsible for Byword, who won the 2010 Prince of Wales’s Stakes, leading home a memorable 1-2 in the Group 1 feature race on the Wednesday for Prince Khalid with Twice Over second. In 2011 he was Champion Owner for the third and final time helped of course by Frankel in his threeyear-old career under the guidance of Sir Henry Cecil. Having blown the field away in the 2,000 Guineas he arrived at Royal Ascot for the St James’s Palace Stakes as a red-hot favourite to extend his unbeaten run to a perfect seven. All seemed to be going to plan as Tom Queally sent him to the front and he was six lengths clear with two furlongs to run. It turned out to be a dramatic finish though as Zoffany stayed on strongly and got to within three parts of a length of Frankel who just held on.

He returned a year later as a four-year-old to contest the Queen Anne Stakes and produced one of the most jaw-dropping performances ever seen at Royal Ascot. Frankel continues to have an impact on the sport through his progeny and he recorded a first Royal Ascot winner as a sire when Without Parole won the St James’s Palace Stakes in 2018

In total, Prince Khalid recorded more than 500 Group level victories around the world, including 118 at Group 1 level with five of those coming at Royal Ascot. His colours continue to be carried under the Juddmonte name and no doubt there will be many more Royal Ascot victories to celebrate.

What job would you have done if you had not gone into racing? I cannot answer that as since I was a child it is all I wanted to do. My school report said when I was 13 that I had given up doing schoolwork as I knew what I wanted to do when I left. Do you get nervous when your horses’ race? Embraer Praetor 600 Combines Technology, Efficiency and Performance
The new Embraer Praetor 600 doesn’t just raise the bar for performance in the super-midsize class of private aircraft, it redefines what a super-midsize aircraft should be.

F
rom its intercontinental range and smooth fly-by-wire controls to its ergonomic seating and ultra-quiet environment, the Praetor 600 provides passengers with the comforts of a large cabin aircraft in a more agile package. This agility is a key differentiator for the Praetor 600. While the aircraft is equipped with the same Honeywell HTF7500E engines as its predecessor, the Legacy 500, Embraer added a software update to the Praetor 600 that boosts thrust by nearly 500 pounds. The Praetor 600 also features a new winglet design that increases wingspan and improves airflow. When combined with advancements in the cockpit, these power and structural upgrades give the Praetor 600 exceptional short-field performance. That means it can go to places other super-midsize aircraft can’t go to, including some of the world’s most challenging airports in city centers and mountainous regions such as London City or La Mole in South of France. This ultimately puts passengers closer to their destinations and substantially reduces transit time. No matter where they are flying, Praetor 600 passengers benefit from Embraer’s Active Turbulence Reduction, the first system of its kind ever fitted to a super-midsize aircraft. Active Turbulence Reduction is made possible because of the Praetor 600’s full fly-by-wire controls. It automatically senses and dampens the effects of turbulence, providing a smoother ride that is more conducive to relaxing or working. The Active Turbulence Reduction system also helps make the Praetor 600 the most fuel-efficient aircraft in its class. The Praetor 600 is so efficient that it can
the Royal Ascot Insider
fly nonstop from London to Muscat or New York to Geneva on one tank of fuel, something that cannot be done in other super-midsize aircraft like the Bombardier Challenger 350. This fuel efficiency also allows passengers to fly knowing they have chosen an industry leader in sustainability for their travel needs. In fact, Embraer designed the Praetor 600 using its DIPAS (Integrated Development of Environmentally Sustainable Products) methodology, which evaluates a product’s sustainability for its entire lifecycle. Under this programme, technologies that reduce fuel consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and noise are favoured for further development. In the cabin, the Praetor 600 is equipped with class-exclusive Viasat Kaband and Gogo AVANCE L5 high-speed Wi-Fi to keep passengers connected to the world below them. Also, classexclusive in the Praetor 600 is Embraer’s touchscreen Upper Tech Panel that displays flight information and cabin management controls in an elegant, unobtrusive manner. Flexjet clients who fly on the new Praetor 600 can relax in a custom Red Label by Flexjet cabin knowing that an additional HEPA filter removes 99.97 percent of all particles in the air, including bacteria, viruses and fungi. These exceptional features and capabilities make the Praetor 600 a truly unique, groundbreaking aircraft. It rises above everything else in the traditional super-midsize category, while also offering better short field performance than large cabin aircraft. That’s why Flexjet is proud to make this aircraft available as part of our European fleet.

As a six year-old, Goldream proved himself at the highest level, winning the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2015 in a thrilling finish. This dark brown sprinter, trained by Robert Cowell, went on to win the Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp later that year.

Last February he arrived at the Yorkshire-based charity, New Beginnings Horses, which is dedicated to providing former racehorses with a “life past the post”.
Now aged 12, Goldream has learned to take life a little slower and has adapted so well that, rather than re-homing him, New Beginnings will keep him as one of their “Ambassador” horses. Kevin Atkinson of the charity explains: “We attend race meetings throughout Yorkshire, where we take two former racehorses who will either stand in an enclosed safe area and let the public get up close and touch them, or do ridden parades to show the true versatility of the former racehorse.” So how is a fiery sprinter like Goldream
“We attend race meetings throughout Yorkshire, where we take two former racehorses who will either stand in an enclosed safe area and let the public get up close and touch them," persuaded to take life at a slower pace? On arriving at New Beginnings, he was turned out in a field for several months to “chill and relax with a couple of other horses,” Kevin divulges. Goldream’s retraining started slowly towards the end of last year. This calm and relaxed approach soon began to pay dividends.

than just crowning the equine kings and queens. "It is certainly one of the most valuable race sponsorships there has been and it has been a really interesting journey," he says. "We’ve worked closely with British Champions Series to ensure that the money we have put in leaves a bit of a legacy. "From when we first discussed the reasons for sponsorship, it’s because we thought it would bring racing to a wider audience and there was a serious concern that it wouldn’t happen unless a sponsor could be found, so we stepped in to make sure that it did. "Then, having got it up and running, we’ve been working very hard to make sure it actually does fulfil that plan, and particularly to engage the young." Certainly, it required some vision about what the family wanted out of the association. "It’s never a terribly easy sell when you’re asking someone to put in the best part of £100m over that period of time, so it’s a massive commitment and investment on their behalf, especially in @ascotracecourse |

"You can’t just turn around and buy a Qipco car or an umbrella, it’s not something that they can gain a commercial success from so it's much more about Sheikh Hamad and his brothers, who are incredibly aware that they’re guests in our country and they’re thoroughly enjoying their experience in racing. They wanted to bring some good through their sponsorship.
"We’ve worked closely with British Champions Series to ensure that the money we have put in leaves a bit of a legacy. "I think Qipco’s modus operandi is to be involved in the very best of the best, whether that’s fine art or investments of any sort, and in British racing they wanted to be associated with what was the very best of it, hence the British Champions Series fitted that very nicely." is where it has made the most demonstrable impact. The organisers’ idea is that the other races that carry the Champions Series kitemark will help novices to build familiarity with horses and jockeys from the Guineas meeting in the spring through the summer showpieces from Goodwood and York. It should all help build the anticipation for a £4million autumn showdown which was first assembled after a trade of big races between Newmarket and Ascot. that has been through providing free access to students and pony club members. "What’s fascinating is that people like Tom Marquand and Hollie Doyle (the golden jockey couple who both won top races at the 2020 event), both came to Champions Day as children," Redvers says. "I’d personally love to roll that out even further, you could have the pony racing championship in the morning going forward, and do much more, possibly

Sheikh Fahad had not arrived into racing ownership long before he became involved in the Qipco sponsorship. While the young Qatari appears to have gained great pleasure from the day itself, he was naturally ambitious to have a more active role. While his Simple Verse landed the 2015 Fillies and Mares Stakes, three years later he took an even bigger slice of the glory through the best horse he has owned so far. "The three winners we’ve been

fortunate to have on Champions Day have all been extremely special but Roaring Lion winning the QEII, on unfavourably soft ground, in front of the Queen, was something that I shall never forget, and something that the sheikhs will never forget because they were lucky enough to watch it from the Royal Box with Her Majesty," says Redvers. "It would be hard to imagine a better day’s racing and a better result." Although the family have been unable to make it to the racecourse on many occasions over the last few months due to the restrictions of the pandemic, Redvers confirms that their enthusiasm for the sport,

and the occasion, remains fervent. "One of the disappointments we’ve had to endure of the last year, obviously with Covid, is that rather than having a massive celebration and leaping forward again, we’ve taken several steps back, and we’ve got to keep that momentum going forward," he says. "So, we’ll see. We’d love to be able to celebrate what is a pretty remarkable achievement this autumn, and we’d love to be able to do it with a huge crowd and a big party." Aigles and Stradivarius to the glittering two Champion Stakes wins of Cracksman. Somehow, though, the conversation always returns to the horse who first got that party started. "I remember having tears rolling down my cheeks when Frankel won the Champion Stakes," he says. "There have been many, many great races in those 10 days, and there’ll be many more. "Whenever you have the very best horse assembled and competing for the championship races at the end of the season, there’s always going to be a memorable story. scot Racecourse Supports’ official nominated charity beneficiaries throughout Royal Ascot are the three principal single Service Armed Forces charities, comprising the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and the RAF Benevolent Fund.
The charities have traditionally been supported and promoted on the Friday of Royal Ascot, and this year we have given them an extended presence across the five days of Royal Ascot to help them raise much needed funds which have been impacted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Each Charity works tirelessly to suppport military personnel, past and present, and their families in times of need with a wide range of practical, emotional and financial support. They would not, however, be able to provide this vital level of care without the public’s support .

Whilst all donations made via the hyperlink above will be accredited to ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, once Royal Ascot is over the total amount raised, including Gift Aid, will be divided equally between the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Luke Wigman’s STORY
Luke’s marathon effort to support charity which supported him
N
o stranger to overcoming diversity, former RAF Senior Aircraftman Luke Wigman used that resilience to become the first Brit to finish the World Marathon Challenge – twice. Luke first completed seven marathons in seven days on seven continents in 2017, before tackling the challenge for a second time last year. He took on the race despite having had a difficult 18 months in his rehabilitation from an injury which ended his RAF career. In 2011 Luke was struck by an IED while mentoring Afghan soldiers on patrol in Afghanistan. The blast damaged the soft tissues around the lower part of his left leg and led to a 12-month recovery.
Then in 2018 Luke returned to hospital to have the skin grafts on his leg removed and re-grafted and part of his leg rebuilt. The treatment did not go to plan and, once again, Luke was faced with a lengthy rehabilitation. Luke said: “Because the recovery was much longer the treatment took its toll on me mentally, physically and emotionally. I found it very difficult to get back into training, and I put on a stone in weight. It wasn’t until the RAF Benevolent Fund stepped in with a grant to cover my costs for being off work and the endless hospital trips that I was able to get back on track.” Watch more here: https://youtu.be/ JikonvfBdCY

Race Summary: Seven of the last nine Jersey Stakes winners had contested a Guineas of some description and Mutasaabeq, who raced freely at Newmarket when well fancied, and Naval Crown, who finished three places ahead of him at 50-1, are likely contenders in an open renewal. But the vote goes to the highly progressive CREATIVE FORCE, who seems versatile in terms of the ground and could still have some untapped potential over this longer distance. Khartoum, Tactical and Vadream are others to consider, while the exciting, once-raced Storm Damage could be anything and needs taking very seriously too. Race Summary: The 7yo DREAM OF DREAMS has gone very close in the last two runnings and can land this illustrious prize at the third attempt, having broken his Group 1 duck in the Sprint Cup at Haydock last September. Starman and Nahaarr fought out a tight finish to the Duke Of York Stakes last month and are the likely dangers, with the winner Starman narrowly feared most provided conditions aren’t too testing. Ventura Rebel was fifth on his reappearance in that York race but could be the best each-way play today, as he likes it here and remains unexposed in the cheekpieces. The return to Ascot could also be a plus for Duke Of York fourth Summerghand, who is another each-way contender. Soft-ground C&D Champions Sprint winner Glen Shiel can go well if the ground is testing. He has a big weights chance but this is such a different type of race that it could be his stablemate Chil Chil is better equipped, having absolutely slaughtered her rivals in a Newmarket handicap this spring. However, she may need that fast ground and, with the uncertain weather, preference is for FRESH, a powerful finisher who is going the right way and looks sure to be suited by a very strongly run race. Pendleton only just lost out to him here in April and, with a subsequent 5f win under his belt, he can also go well although it remains to be seen which is his best sprint trip. Chiefofchiefs is also respected along with Tis Marvellous and Gulliver whose form here cannot be disputed. The much improved Rohaan also has to be considered. Race Predictor: MR LUPTON CHIL CHIL CHIEFOFCHIEFS Forecast: 9-1 Rohaan (IRE), 10-1 Mr Lupton (IRE), Pendleton (GB), 11-1 Chil Chil (GB), King’s Lynn (GB), Fresh (GB), 12-1 Lampang (IRE), 14-1 Danzeno (GB), Punchbowl Flyer (IRE), 16-1 Hey Jonesy (IRE), Chiefofchiefs (GB), 18-1 Tis Marvellous (GB), Desert Safari (IRE), Raaeb (IRE), Fleeting Prince (IRE), 20-1 Lexington Dash (FR), Gulliver (GB), 22-1 Aberama Gold (GB), Streamline (GB), 25-1 Indigo Balance (IRE), Above (FR), Barbill (IRE), 33-1 Air Raid (GB), 40-1 Snazzy Jazzy (IRE), Ropey Guest (GB)

Race Summary: Mark Johnston’s KING FRANKEL can be described as setting the standard, as he has already finished second in two major 1m2f handicaps, and the manner in which he so nearly grabbed victory at Epsom last time suggested he can raise his game again. Visualisation has shown his mettle in Irish 1m handicaps in the mud, with a good chance that he can run just as well over this longer trip. However, the field also includes plenty of lightly raced types who bring plenty of promise. Alfaadhel and Fantastic Fox are high up that list, while Glentaneous could be a very big improver now that he moves up from 1m and he may be the selection’s chief threat. Foxes Tales is better than he showed at Chester and Seasett is a major player. BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HHHH Lightly raced 6yo with a strike-rate of 4-10; didn’t appear to stay 2m4f in a French Group 1 two seasons ago but this former Listed winner (on good to firm) was having his first run since being gelded (and after 314 days off) when circling the field to ultimately run away with the Chester Cup (2m2f, good to soft), in spite of his bad draw and a big weight; that was taking and it marks him down as a serious contender here on what are very favourable terms with most of the field. ROYAL BLUE, WHITE seams, 20 WHITE and ROYAL BLUE hooped cap. BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HHHH Pays his way under both codes; third in the 2018 Ascot Stakes here, won the following season’s Cesarewitch (2m2f, soft) and very nearly won the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup (2m, good) at last year’s Ebor festival at York, underlining his class; has run over inadequate trips this season and yet still won at Gowran in April before getting outpaced in a 1m6f Group 3; massive chance now the rain has come as he’d be giving weight all round in a handicap. BET WITH ASCOT VIEW HHHH Won the 2m4f Ascot Stakes at this meeting two years ago and last year he might well have beaten Who Dares Wins in this race had he not raced so freely in the early stages; as good as ever when second to Falcon Eight in the Chester Cup and it was always going to be tough in a French Group 2 last time, especially over a trip just shy of 2m; strong stayer and the rain has aided his chance no end. Race Summary: Royal Ascot closes with the Flat season’s longest race. Who Dares Wins and The Grand Visir were first and second favourites when dominating 12 months ago and this is a much deeper renewal. Stratum is a battle-hardened old pro with crystal-clear claims at the weights, Morando should go close if seeing out the trip and not many Chester Cups are won with the authority that Falcon Eight took his last month. However, the softened ground brings STAG HORN strongly into the equation. Archie Watson’s contender made giant strides as a raw 3yo stayer last season and, considering the fast surface, he ran as well as he was entitled to behind Stradivarius in his comeback race here.

Hayley Turner has long been a crowd favourite at Royal Ascot and can often also be found in front of the camera sharing her racing expertise with the tv audience. 1) What is your favourite Royal Ascot memory? It would have to be my first Royal Ascot winner, Thanks Be, who won the Sandringham in 2019 for Charlie Fellowes. 2)Which race would you most like to win at Royal Ascot? It would have to be the Gold Cup, I think every jockey would like to win it. 3) If you could ride any horse entered this week, that you are not currently booked to ride, which horse would it be and why? I would love to ride Stradivarius, he comes to life at Ascot. 4) If Frankie broke down on his way to the races, would you:a) Reroute and go and give him a lift b) Get on your phone to your agent and see if you can get the rides on any of his horses It would have to go and pick him up as I wouldn’t have a chance of ever getting on any of his rides.

5) If you could pick one Royal Ascot winner from the history books which horse would you pick and why? I would of loved to have ridden Estimate, it would have been some thrill to ride for HM the Queen 6) You can invite 5 guests to Royal Ascot, who would you choose? My Nanna, my sisters Gemma and Connie and my dad and my best friend Charlotte. 7) What is the last thing that goes through your mind just before the starter drops their flag? I am in the moment, I am just thinking about where to sit in the race and who to follow. 8) Jam or cream first on a scone? I don’t really mind whether jam or cream goes first but it would have to be a gluten free scone as I have celiac’s disease. 9) What makes Royal Ascot so special? It is so unique and there is nowhere quite like it in the world and it is so hard to ride a winner.

ROYAL ASCOT FASHION DESIGN COMPETITION 2021 As part of our Ascot Racecourse Supports schools engagement programme, this year we collaborated with Samsung, our technical suppliers, to deliver a competition that combined the design functionality of Samsung’s Flipchart technology with the creative talents of local secondary school students. The young designers were tasked with creating an outfit, complete with hat, that could be worn in the Queen Anne Enclosure at Royal Ascot 2021 with the ultimate prize of having their winning design judged and manufactured by Royal Ascot designer, Zeynep Kartal and their hat made by Farnham-based milliner, Beverley Edmondson. Samsung kindly made a permanent donation of the innovative Flipcharts to the three local secondary schools invited to participate - Charters School, Sunningdale; Brakenhale School, Bracknell; and Ranelagh School, Bracknell. Each school was invited to submit their top three designs. Isobel Butler, aged 17, from Ranelagh School was announced the winner and her fabulous design, from beginning to end, can be seen below. You will also hopefully get to see Isobel wearing her outfit today as she has also been given the honour of co-presenting trophies for the 5.35pm Golden Gate Stakes. We look forward to following Isobel’s career path as we have clearly found a talented designer in the making.
LOCAL SCHOOLS
ROYAL ASCOT ART COMPETITION The Local Schools Royal Ascot Art Competition took place again this year for the fourth time with children aged between 4 and 14 once again invited to enter one of the six different age categories. Winning schools received £1,000 with winning and runner-up artists receiving Amazon vouchers plus an invitation to attend next month’s QIPCO King George Diamond Weekend meeting. The artwork will be added to the Heath Tunnel gallery which connects Ascot High Street to the public heath located in the centre of the racecourse; making a colourful walkway for racegoers and the local community. This year entries were received from 18 schools in the Ascot area with over 3,000 online votes cast. The winners from each category were as follows:
