OFFICIAL RACEDAY PROGRAMME
THE bet365 CHARLIE HALL MEETING – DAY TWO SATURDAY 31ST OCTOBER 2020
WELCOME TO WETHERBY RACECOURSE! It is with mixed feelings but also one of great relief that I am able to ‘welcome’ everyone to a new racing season at Wetherby Racecourse, on behalf of the Board of Directors and our Management team. We are having to manage and operate our racecourse under the unprecedented and challenging circumstances caused by the Covid-19 pandemic but we are not permitted to welcome our race goers back, in person, which is a great sadness to us all. All British racecourses are currently running with two totally separate zones. One is for owners (and their guests) with a runner on the day and the other confined to our racecourse staff, the BHA officials and the trainers and all their staff. We started our new 2020/2021 season at Wetherby on Wednesday 14th October with a really good programme and as well as hosting some superb contests yesterday, we have the exciting prospect of some excellent racing today including the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase and the bet365 (West Yorkshire) Hurdle. We are deeply indebted to bet365 for continuing to support racing at Wetherby with their sponsorship of this race meeting, as indeed we are to all the sponsors who are continuing to support Wetherby Racecourse. Looking ahead, we have five more race days up to the end of 2020, including Boxing Day and 27th December, with a further eight days of Jumping and one day of Flat racing during the first four months of 2021; the BHA has yet to confirm the racing fixtures from 1st May onwards. Normally, this ‘welcome’ message would appear in the race card on our opening day but race cards as we have known them have, so far, been replaced with a single sheet of paper listing all the runners in each race. For this race meeting, however, we are delighted to offer our supporters a digital version of the normal race card which we hope will enhance your enjoyment of racing at Wetherby. Finally, to all our Sponsors, to the Owners and Trainers who bring their horses, the Jockeys who ride them and to YOU, our loyal public, I would like to say a really big “thank you” on behalf Wetherby Racecourse and wish you all an enjoyable and successful season. Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). Form Guide The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or /. CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out. The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race. FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK
| FACTS | FANCIES | FORM | STATS |
Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front.
You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

How to place a bet with a racecourse bookmaker: 1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager. 2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, state the racecard number of your chosen horse. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet. 3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings. 4. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win • 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2 • 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 • 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 • Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4 5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the racegoer as to his rights. 6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5 or £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

PAUL FERGUSON’S RACEDAY PREVIEW 10 horses go to post for a strong-looking renewal of today’s feature – the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase – with Cyrname the most fascinating of contenders. Following the victories of See More Business (twice) and, more recently, Silviniaco Conti, the eight-year-old will bid to provide Paul Nicholls with a fourth win in the race. Officially rated 176, he is clear in that respect, but he has to prove his effectiveness over the distance and on a left-handed track. His performance here will determine plans for the remainder of the season and he is certainly a favourite who will divide opinion. The past two winners of the race – Definitly Red and Ballyoptic – are back for more, with the latter representing Nigel Twiston-Davies, the most successful Charlie Hall trainer, with six wins to his name, spanning back to 1992 and Tipping Tim. Definitly Red, 2018
Ballyoptic, 2019
The lightly-raced Vinndication is another interesting contender, as he has won first time out in each of his three seasons, and he hails from the in-form stable of Kim Bailey. Warren Greatrex sends two horses from his Lambourn yard – Keeper Hill and La Bague Au Roi – whilst former Cheltenham Festival winner Mister Whitaker and Richard Hobson’s Saint Xavier also make the journey north. Aye Right, who shaped really well over an inadequate trip against a subsequent Old Roan winner last time, and Sam Spinner represent the north. The former hails from the Scottish base of Harriet Graham, whilst the latter – twice a winner at this track last year – is unbeaten in three starts over fences and represents Middleham-based trainer Jedd O’Keeffe. Elsewhere on the card, Stayers’ Hurdle winner Lisnagar Oscar has to concede weight to all eight of his rivals in the Grade 2 bet365 Hurdle, with Rebecca Curtis’ seven-year-old out to prove that his festival success was not a fluke. The opposition is headed by Next Destination, who makes his first start for Paul Nicholls having moved from Willie Mullins’ stable, and Roksana, who might give the market leader most to think about, in receipt of her 7lbs mares allowance. She has actually won just once during the past two seasons, but she is completely unexposed as a stayer (had just two starts at 3m) and Dan Skelton is another trainer who is in fine form at present. Verdana Blue sets a high bar in the Listed bet365 Mares’ Hurdle, whilst Brief Ambition sets the standard in the extended 2m3f novices’ hurdle, following an encouraging second on debut. The Fergal O’Brien team, who started the season in superb form, aren’t firing in the winners at the same regularity of late, but he will be hoping for a change of fortune with this six-year-old, who contested the Weatherbys Champion Bumper back in March. Finally, the card concludes with an ultra-competitive 20-runner handicap hurdle, in which Do Wanna Know makes his reappearance for Charlie Longsdon. Rather like Third Time Lucki yesterday, he features as one of my ‘Leading Prospects’ in this year’s Jumpers To Follow publication, which you can purchase in paper or digital versions here, so I am hoping for a bold showing under Robbie Dunne. Enjoy the action and best of luck! Paul.

Longest Traveller: HEAR NO EVIL trained by N C Kelly, Ireland. RACE DESCRIPTION Our opening contest this afternoon is a three mile handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

FINANCIAL OUTCOME ran well on the back of 7 months off when runner-up at Ffos Las earlier this month and, with his rider able to take off a valuable 7lb, he’s fancied to make a bold bid to go one place better with that under his belt. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two mile and four furlong novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.

PLAY SMARTER
ASHTOWN LAD shaped with plenty of promise when just edged out over C&D earlier in the month so is hard to side against here with a fair bit of improvement in the pipelines. Brief Ambition also has better days ahead of him so should ensure Dan Skelton’s 6-y-o doesn’t have things all his own way though and useful Flat stayer Moon King is another to consider if building on his debut fourth at Kelso.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two mile and three furlong handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 125. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms, Guy, who is rated 125 in this particular race, is required to carry 5lb more than Minella For Me, who is rated 120.

PLAY SMARTER
GUY returned vastly improved when making a winning start over fences at Huntingdon so is fancied to go in again as he still looks on a very workable mark here despite being hit with a 12lb rise by the assessor. In-form course winner Minella For Me rates the chief threat, although Siannes Star is another still unexposed over fences who has the potential to have a say.

RACE DESCRIPTION Listed races are high class and only bettered by a Grade 1, 2 or 3 contest. In effect, it is an intermediate level; many of the runners in this two mile hurdle race will now have an official rating that makes it no longer feasible to run them in handicaps and will be using this race as a springboard to even better things. Initially, all the mares in this contest are allocated 10st 12lb, before penalties are given to those that have previously won at this level or above. These penalties range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 3 success to 6lb for a Grade 1 victory - see how Desaray Girl, Midnight’s Gift and Mrs Hyde all carry 4lb extra for their past Listed wins.

HORSE WELFARE Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance. During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

RACE DESCRIPTION Grade 2 races are high class contests and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top notch horses lining up, and certainly some Cheltenham Festival contenders. Initially, the weights in this three mile hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex (fillies and mares allowed 7lb - see how Roksana carries 10st 7lb), before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 3 victory to 6lb for a Grade 2 or Grade 1 success, for example, Lisnagar Oscar won the Grade 1 Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last season, so carries the maximum 6lb penalty here.

THE BET365 CHARLIE HALL CHASE (GRADE 2)
HISTORY First ran in 1969, this race was originally named the Wetherby Pattern Chase. It was renamed the Emblem Handicap Chase in honour of the winner of the 1863 Grand National, and became known as the Charlie Hall Memorial Wetherby Pattern Chase in 1978. The race was named in memory of trainer Charlie Hall, and was shortened to it’s current guise in 1990. Bet365 have sponsored the race since 2003. The hugely popular Cue Card won this race in superb style in 2015, and went on to land both the Betfair Chase at Haydock and Kempton’s King George VI on Boxing Day. He returned to Wetherby in 2016 but failed to secure the double, being beaten into third place behind the Rebecca Curtis-trained grey, Irish Cavalier, and 2014 winner Menorah.

A race which revolves around CYRNAME, as if he sees out the trip (below-form second in King George sole attempt at 3m) and shows himself to be fully effective on a left-handed track (all best efforts right-handed) then he’ll be extremely hard to beat. Vinndication, who goes well fresh, is more than capable of making his mark in open graded company and is next best ahead of 2019 winner Ballyoptic.

RACE DESCRIPTION The final race of the bet365 Charlie Hall Meeting is a two mile and four furlong handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.
