i T O DAY ’ S R A C E S This afternoon we have seven races for your entertainment which includes two Listed races. But what exactly is a Listed Race? Below are brief descriptions of each of today’s races which will help you understand the action on the track. 1:10 THE EBF STALLIONS NOVICE STAKES This afternoon’s opening contest is a seven furlong Novice Stakes which is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.
1:45 THE MARKET CROSS JEWELLERS HANDICAP STAKES (DIV I) This is a one mile and two furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
2:15 THE MARKET CROSS JEWELLERS HANDICAP STAKES (DIV II) Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority has allowed today’s second race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.
2:50 THE RACING TV EBF STALLIONS GUISBOROUGH STAKES (LISTED RACE) Today’s third race is a seven furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards and is also a Listed race. Races over seven furlongs tend to attract specialist horses – those which find sprint races a little too sharp for them and one mile races too much of a stretch on their stamina. In athletics, the 400 metres would be a good comparison. Initially, the weights are set according to age and sex before penalties are awarded to those that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success or 8lb for wins at Group 1 or 2 level.
3:25 THE WILLIAM HILL TWO YEAR OLD TROPHY (LISTED RACE) Our fourth race this afternoon is one of the highlights of our season. Run over six furlongs for two-year-olds, this Listed race may well have been on connections’ minds all season. A Listed race forms part of racing’s Pattern pyramid which includes Group 1, 2 and 3 races. Many of the runners will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against their peers before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 2lb for colts and geldings and 8st 11lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to those that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success or 8lb for wins at Group 1 or 2 level.
4:00 THE EVERY RACE LIVE ON RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES This is a one mile and six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.
4:35 THE RACING TV STRAIGHT-MILE HANDICAP STAKES As the name suggests, our penultimate race is a one mile handicap race for three-yearolds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
5:05 THE WATCH RACE REPLAYS AT RACINGTV.COM HANDICAP STAKES This afternoon’s finale is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

Star Ratings Explained - Each horse has a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
Official BHA Rating - The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

i DISTANCES EXPLAINED Races on the flat are run over a range of different distances. The shortest distance is 5 furlongs which is often referred to as ‘the minimum trip’. Races usually go up in 1 furlong increments although it can be parts of a furlong depending on the configuration of each racecourse. For example, races classed as being run over 6 furlongs at Redcar are actually run over 5 furlongs and 217 yards - 3 yards short of the official distance but this isn’t unique on British racecourses. You may be fooled into thinking that the 2 miles and 4 furlongs Gold Cup at Royal Ascot is the longest race on the flat in Britain but it is in fact another Royal Ascot race that holds the record. The Queen Alexandra Stakes is run over a stamina-sapping distance of 2 miles and 6 furlongs. Horse racing in Britain dates back hundreds of years so it is hardly surprising that we still use a few historic terms when it comes to the sport. But what exactly is a furlong? In simple terms, a furlong equates to 220 yards or just over 200 metres.

i HANDICAPS EXPLAINED Around 60 per cent of all races run in Britain each year are handicaps. But what actually is a handicap? In simple terms, they are races where the runners carry different weights to give them an equal chance of winning. So how are the weights calculated? Once a horse has run at least three times in a Flat race, or run in no more than two Flat races in Britain and won at least one of them, they will be allocated an Official Rating, also known as a handicap mark. This rating is calculated by a team of professional handicappers employed by the British Horseracing Authority and is based on the level of form shown. In subsequent races if a horse runs better than its rating then it may well be raised and likewise if it performs below its rating then it will be reduced. Ratings start from around 30 at the lower end of the scale with the average top level horses rated roughly between 115 and 125. These ratings are converted to lbs for handicap purposes. Most handicaps are designed for horses within a specific range, for example those rated between 71 & 85. So the rating not only decides the weight that a horse will carry, it also decides which races it can run in. In this instance a horse rated 85 is 5 higher than a horse rated 80 so considered 5lb better and hence carries 5lb more in the race. In theory, the weight difference should see them cross the line together. Without handicaps, the best horses would almost always win. The guarantee of a winner may sound attractive but ultimately uncompetitive races would negatively impact Owners, Racegoers and Bookmakers.

i HEADGEAR EXPLAINED Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horses performance on the track.
Blinkers
The hustle and bustle of a racecourse can be exciting for a racehorse and so Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!
Visors
Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup. If you look at the two pictures in the examples you can just make out the difference. This slit enables a horse to see the other runners around them but still keeps the focus forwards.
Cheekpieces
Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision. Horses who struggle to perform to their best because they are too keen in their races are often prime candidates for cheekpieces.
Eye Shields
Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but the do allow full vision. Often worn at all-weather tracks where the kick-back can fly into the horses faces, the purpose of them is to prevent anything going into the horses eyes.
Hood
Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes. Padding around the ears restricts noise and helps to calm a nervous horse. Eye holes allow a full range of vision.
Noseband
Some horses can carry their head akwardly high which prevents them perfoming at their best. A noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.
Tongue Strap
Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping out. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race. You can just see it in the picture.
i A B R I E F H I S T O RY O F T WO - Y E A R - O L D T RO P H Y DAY With a guaranteed prize fund of £100,000, this afternoon’s Listed William Hill Two Year Old Trophy is one of the most valuable juvenile races in Europe and one of the highlights of our season. The race is a unique addition to the calendar in that is has been designed specifically for two-year-olds whose sires had one or more yearling sales at the main public auctions in Europe and North America during the previous year. It was first run in 1989 and proved an instant success with owners and trainers. Richard Hannon Senior was well known as a leading trainer of top-class juveniles and so it was hardly surprising that the inaugural race was won by one of his string. Under a front running ride from Brian Rouse, Osario ran out the 12/1 winner. Hannon was back in the Winners’ Enclosure three years later thanks to the success of Pips Pride in the hands of Dean McKeown, who also rode Captain Rio to land the race in 2001 and Dubai Dynamo in 2007. The most recent of McKeown’s victories provided trainer Stan Moore with the first of back-toback wins in this race as 12 months later Total Gallery landed the spoils, although this time under Liam Keniry. Following in his father’s footsteps, Richard Hannon Junior added his name to the race’s illustrious Roll of Honour in 2015 when Log Out Island made all for a convincing success under Sean Levey. However, the prize returned to the North in 2016 as David Barron’s Wick Powell made all under jockey Andrew Mullen to give the trainer his second win in the race after Dim Sums’ victory in 2000. And it remained in Yorkshire when the Barry McHughridden Darkanna gave Richard Fahey his first success in the race in 2017.
LOG OUT ISLAND
Last year victory went to that same source as Summer Sands took the race for the same Trainer/Jockey combination and owners The Cool Silk Partnership. There was an competitive field of 17 runners but the winner prevailed in style, powering almost three lengths clear in the closing stages on the heavy ground, returning the trophy to Yorkshire from Scotland, where it resided from 2018 after Summer Daydream scooped the pot for trainer Keith Dalgleish.
SUMMER DAYDREAM Tim Easterby is currently the leading trainer in this race. Who can forget the flying filly Pipalong who scorched to success in 1998 and she was followed four years later by the subsequent multiple Group 1 winner Somnus. Body And Soul brought up the hat-trick when justifying favouritism for Duran Fentiman in 2012 and a fourth win swiftly followed when Ventura Mist landed the odds under David Allan in 2013. Cape Merino landed the biggest shock in the early days when winning at 33/1 in 1993. In those early days a special bonus of £100,000 was on offer dependent upon the number of two-year-olds in the winning trainers’ yard. As Cape Merino was the only juvenile in the late Alf Smith’s Beverley stable, he copped the lot!
BOGART In 2004, the William Hill Two Year Old Trophy was elevated to Listed status and one of the best performances in the race’s history came when the Mick Channon-trained Obe Gold smashed the track record when partnered by Chris Catlin. The prize returned to Yorkshire in 2005 when 28/1 shot Misu Bond landed the honours for Bryan Smart in the well-known black and yellow colours of Reg Bond. Those colours were also carried to victory in 2010 when the 3/1 favourite Ladies Are Forever scored for trainer Geoff Oldroyd and jockey Silvestre De Sousa. Danum Dancer was a double-figure priced winner in 2006 when obliging at odds of 16/1 for another Yorkshire handler, Neville Bycroft and there was an even bigger shock 12 months later when Dubai Dynamo struck at odds of 40/1 – becoming the biggest-priced winner of the race – to give trainer Stan Moore the first of his successive wins in the race. Another big-priced winner scored in 2009 when Lucky Like won at 20/1 for trainer Eoghan O’Neill and jockey Franny Norton. After that, the prize remained in Yorkshire for the next four years following the victories of Ladies Are Forever in 2010, the Kevin Ryan-trained Bogart in 2011, Body And Soul in 2012 and Ventura Mist in 2013.
LIMATO In 2014 we saw a top-class performance from Henry Candy’s Limato. Unbeaten in three starts, the 6/5 favourite ran out an impressive winner, so it was hardly a surprise when he went on to Group 1 glory later in his career. The high-class action is not just limited to the feature race as the card is supported by the £50,000 Listed Racing TV EBF Stallions Guisborough Stakes. Saeed Bin Suroor has won the race three times for Godolphin in recent years – Gonfilia in 2004, Council Member in 2005 and Il Warrd in 2008 while Charlie Appleby made it another win for the Godolphin blue in 2006 as Latharnach took the spoils. The likes of William Haggas, Roger Varian, Mark Johnston, Ed Dunlop and Charles Hills have all won the race in recent seasons. This afternoon also sees the running of the Racing TV Straight-Mile Handicap Stakes, for which Redcar would normally hold a series final in a normal year. It has a history of unearthing some useful horses Jubilee Street, Nanton, Fragrancy, Charlie Tipple, Collateral Damage and Kiwi Bay are all on the roll of honour, the latter winning back-to-back renewals in 2010 and 2011. Last year saw another back-to-backer as Give It Some Teddy made it two in a row with Duran Fentiman in the saddle for the Tim Easterby stable. So sit back and enjoy the action on the track as, based on previous years, you are likely to witness some top-class racing and who knows, maybe a future superstar in the making.

FIRST WINNER
The Racing TV Redcar Two Year Old Trophy was first run in 1993 and was won by the John Lowe-ridden Cape Merino. The 33/1 shot was trained by the 70 year old Alf Smith, who at the time of his filly’s success had only nine horses in his yard.
LEADING JOCKEY
Silvestre De Sousa and Barry McHugh are the only current riders to have won the race more that once - Danun Dancer in 2006 and Ladies Are Forever in 2010 for the former, while McHugh won on Darkanna in 2017 and Summer Sands last year. The now retired Dean McKeown won the race in 2001 on Captain Rio and 2007 on Dubai Dynamo.
LEADING TRAINER
Tim Easterby leads the way with four wins. The Great Habton-trainer’s first success came in 1998 with the classy mare Pipalong before Somnus followed suit in 2002. Body And Soul and Ventura Mist gave him back-to-back victories in 2012/13.

A spell of dry weather saw Good to Firm ground for the 2004 renewal. Under an enterprising ride by jockey Chris Catlin, the Mick Channon-trained Obe Gold made vitually all of the six furlong contest in a record time for the race of 1m 8.84s.

Her nursery win at Doncaster puts her in with a major chance on these terms so she gets the vote, with Lullaby Moon, Zamaani and Blind Beggar just a trio of potential threats.
