Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ★★★★★ Selected to win the race. ★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed. ★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. ★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.
Official BHA Ratings Explained The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.
You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet. If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

Race Description
1
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two miles and three furlongs novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged between four and seven-years-old which have not won more than three hurdle races.

PLAY SMARTER
An intriguing opener in which Chris Honour’s TILE TAPPER gets the vote to open his account in this sphere having not been disgraced behind the unbeaten Metier on both starts over timber so far. He faces some serious opposition however, with Seelotmorebusiness, Alaphilippe and Stellar Magic all looking sure-fire improvers, and they won’t allow the selection to have it all his own way.

Race Description This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

PLAY SMARTER
A chance is taken on Robin Dickin’s 11-y-o GALACTIC POWER, who bounced back to some form after 9 months off when runner-up at Ludlow last month, giving best only to an unpenalised previous winner. He hasn’t won for a while, but looks to have every chance of bucking that trend here. Panatos’ mark continues to fall so he’s a tentative selection for second, ahead of Milreu Has and Russian Service.

Race Description This is a two miles and half a furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 115. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 115 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

PLAY SMARTER
There should be better to come from STATE CROWN, who understandably ran out of petrol in the closing stages after racing close to the pace in a strongly-run affair at Plumpton last time. Race Description This is a three miles and four furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse. At every meeting there are 3 specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys.
Horse Welfare
A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Race Description This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

Race Description This two miles, five and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards mares which are rated from 0 to 120. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

WHATSDASTORY is worth another chance to confirm the promise of her chase debut third at Southwell. Theatre Mix could pose a big threat if she can avoid the bad mistakes which have proved costly for her over fences so far. Born In Borris can build on her Exeter chase debut third and also makes the shortlist.

Race Description As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to four, five and six-year-old mares and will be run over two miles and 104 yards.
