SPIRITOFTHENORTH
LAST TIME OUT | Thursday 31st March We last came together on Thursday 31st March for an afternooon comprising of seven races. The card began with a competitive maiden hurdle where the now Champion Jockey Brian Hughes got procedings under way, absoloutely enialating his rivals on the Kevin Ryan trained Spiritofthenorth. The pair pulled 32 lengths clear of Patagonia who was back in second for Oliver Greenall and Craig Nichol with the Skeltons’ Quiet Flow back in third. The second race of the afternoon, a selling Hurdle. Saw 10-1 shot Dis Donc pull out a shock result when winning the four runner contest. Trained by Micky Hammond and ridden by Jamie Hamilton, the gelding led for most of the contest until he was headed by the eventual second The Sumba Island before battling back to get up half a furlong from the line. the disapointing favourite Weebill was back in third with Clearance filling the fourth and final spot. The first winning favourite of the day was Rose Sea Has ridden from the front in an uncomplicated manor Charlie Hammond was able to maintain his streak at the course. six and a half lengths behind the winner was Crack Du Ninain who put up a good effort but was unable to match the infatic winner. Miss Amelia was back in third for Brian Hughes The fourth race of the afternoon saw Oliver Greenall get onto the score board with Jet Of Magic.Handily ridden throughout the race, Craig Nichol who was onboard faced a strong challenge from eventual runner up Only The Bold but stayed on strongly and was always holding on towards the line. Garincha was back in third but only finished two and three Quarter lengths behind the winner, with sp Favourite Glencassley a long way back in fourth position.
Next came the 0-115 Handicap chase which saw champion jockey Brian Hughes register his second victory of the day when Sigurd trained by Joanne Foster put his rivals to the sword two fences from home shooting clear and maintaining that advantage right up to the line. The well supported Ballyrath could only manage second place having opened up at 25-1 and returned at 12-1. Oliver Greenhall’s Midnight Moss was a well beaten third and the favourite Templebredin was last to complete. The prenultimate race on the card was division one of the three mile handicap hurdle. The Questioner was our second winning favourite of the day, going of at 13-8 he was held up through out the contest before making a challenge and going clear two from home before staying on strongly to the line; This bought up the double for the potent combination of Greenhall and Nichol. Onestepatatime was the runner up who also came from off the pace but was only found out by the impressive by winner. Howzat Hiris was a big price third for the Micky Hammond team. The final race of the day and second division of the three mile handicap hurdle. Veshenskaya was easy winner with another favourite being beaten with 9-4 shot King Ferdinand back in second. Winning jockey John Kington was able to sit in the box seat throughout the race tracking the leader befort making a decisive move three hurdle from home the eventual runner up who maintained a similar position in the race but was unable to sustain the challenge. Storm Force One filled the third spot.

Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
THE BUZZ by Wetherbee
RACE ONE
TFRESH HOPE confirmed the promise that she displayed on debut by finishing a close second when last seen over an extended mile at Nottingham in September. The daughter of New Approach is bred to improve as a three-year-old and she is arguably the one to beat. World Without Love is a half-sister Subjectivist and Sir Ron Priestley, which suggests that she may take a significant step forward this year, while Waahaat and Exciting News are newcomers to note.
WIN: FRESH HOPE
RACE TWO
DANGER: World Without Love
In an open race the marginal preference is for LADY LOU, who has filled second place in both starts since winning at Southwell in January. The daughter of Brazen Beau remains on a workable mark and the switch back to turf should not be a problem. The recent Pontefract winner Do I Dream is an obvious threat to the selection, while Aryaah and Eklil complete the shortlist.
WIN: LADY LOU
DANGER: Do I Dream
RACE THREE
MONTASSIB accounted for a decent field when making a winning debut in September 2020 and the son of Exceed And Excel merits the utmost respect once again, despite the 598-day layoff. Eeetee showed ability in France and it would be no surprise to see him go well for new connections. Rogue Missile is closely related to plenty of winners and any market support for her on debut would have to be noted.
WIN: MONTASSIB
DANGER: Eeetee
RACE FOUR
BIG NARSTIE shaped with promise on his return at Doncaster last month and the form of that race has worked out well since. This represents an ideal opportunity for the gelding to regain the winning thread. That may be at the main expense of the comfortable Newcastle winner Fiftyshadesofred and Celtic Empress, who is now 3lb below her last winning mark.
WIN: BIG NARSTIE
DANGER: Fiftyshadesofred
RACE FIVE
SOUL SEEKER only found one too good on his return and remains well handicapped off just 1lb higher than his last winning mark, and it was around this time last year that he notched up a double. Lazyitis and Rolfe Rembrandt have been plying their trade on the all-weather of late and they are likely to be thereabouts, along with Dream Composer..
WIN: SOUL SEEKER
DANGER: Rolfe Rembrandt
RACE SIX
A tentative vote goes to HARROGATE, following a second at Southwell earlier in the month. Paul Midgley’s charge won three times on the turf last season, which bodes well ahead of this assignment and he can get the better of The Armed Man, who shaped well when placed at Thirsk, and Show Me A Sunset. Amasova and Cowboy Soldier can have a say in proceedings as well.
WIN: HARROGATE
DANGER: The Armed Man
RACE SEVEN
KING OF TONGA scored at Pontefract just under a fortnight ago on his first start for Declan Carroll. He was given a 2lb rise for that victory and still looks to be well treated on his past form. Elegant Erin has her first run of the season and is worth a market check, as is Cool Spirit, who was a three-time winner on the all-weather earlier in the year.
WIN: KING OF TONGA
DANGER: Elegant Erin
RACE EIGHT
There was less than a length between Moonlit Warrior (first) and SATANIC MOON (second) at Chelmsford earlier in the month, and now on 2lb better terms a chance is taken on the latter to reverse that form. The Franny Norton ridden gelding was slowly away on that occasion and looked as though the experience will bring him on. Marbuzet is one to note as he has his first run since being gelded and is upped in trip..
WIN: SATANIC MOON
DANGER: Moonlit Warrior
REMEMBERING TOM RICHMOND
Forgive a note of sadness on this spring day but there is something missing as we gather once more at Wetherby. Look up at the weighing room and you will see it. Or rather you won’t. Gone is the familiar and reassuring sight of Tom Richmond, without whom no meeting here has been complete for many a year. The steps down to the parade ring were home from home for the Yorkshire Post’s indefatigable racing correspondent, a place where he would beguile jockeys and trainers, owners and stewards, winning their confidence and luring them into a fascinating revelation with which to entertain his readers. But no more. Tom died suddenly on the day of the last meeting, at the ridiculously young age of just 52. He was actually Opinion Editor at the YP and the trenchant way he expressed his views in print has been much spoken of in the days since his death, along with his even-handed manner with politicians and plumbers, bishops and bartenders. Yet you and I know that racing is far more important than his day job and so, you suspect, did Tom, who loved the sport with a passion. As he said when making the shortlist for Racing Writer of the Year at the Horserace Writers And Photographers Association Derby Awards in 2014, “To me, racing is special because of its human and equine heroes. They should never be taken for granted. “Without them, life would be very dull and those working in the sport should never tire of trying to promote racing’s more uplifting stories.” None worked harder to promote our sport in a county whose nine courses he knew so well and many is the up-and-coming jockey or trainer who has particular reason to be grateful for a welltimed plug. Wetherby itself will stage a race in Tom’s honour in October, by which time a memorial bench will sit proudly outside the weighing room where he did so much fine work, and it would be no surprise were his old friends Sue and Harvey Smith already plotting a poignant victory next autumn. By David Carr, Racing Post.

RACE DESCRIPTION This contest is a Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of one mile and two furlong. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

PLAY SMARTER
A few in with a shout but the vote goes to top-weight EKLIL, who found a chunk of improvement to score at Windsor just under a fortnight ago just when he was becoming to look exposed. A 5lb rise shouldn’t be beyond him and he’s fancied to kick on now up and running. Lady Lou is in fine heart this year so she heads up the dangers with this step up in trip sure to suit, ahead of recent Pontefract scorer Do I Dream.

RACE DESCRIPTION This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of seven furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
