WELCOME TO WETHERBY RACECOURSE! It is with mixed feelings but also one of great relief that I am able to ‘welcome’ everyone to a new racing season at Wetherby Racecourse, on behalf of the Board of Directors and our Management team. We are having to manage and operate our racecourse under the unprecedented and challenging circumstances caused by the Covid-19 pandemic but we are not permitted to welcome our race goers back, in person, which is a great sadness to us all. All British racecourses are currently running with two totally separate zones. One is for owners with a runner on the day and the other confined to our racecourse staff, the BHA officials and the trainers and all their staff. We started our new 2020/2021 season at Wetherby on Wednesday 14th October with a really good programme and we have the exciting prospect of some excellent racing over today and tomorrow including the Bet365 Charlie Hall Chase and the Bet365 (West Yorkshire) Hurdle. We are deeply indebted to Bet365 for continuing to support racing at Wetherby with their sponsorship of this race meeting, as indeed we are to all the sponsors who are continuing to support Wetherby Racecourse. Looking ahead, we have five more race days up to the end of 2020, including Boxing Day and 27th December, with a further eight days of Jumping and one day of Flat racing during the first four months of 2021; the BHA has yet to confirm the racing fixtures from 1st May onwards. Normally, this ‘welcome’ message would appear in the race card on our opening day but race cards as we have known them have, so far, been replaced with a single sheet of paper listing all the runners in each race. For this race meeting, however, we are delighted to offer our supporters a digital version of the normal race card which we hope will enhance your enjoyment of racing at Wetherby. Each horse has been given a star rating, these are deﬁned below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). Form Guide The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or /. CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out. The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race. FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK

UNDERSTANDING THE LANGUAGE OF RACING

Do not be put off by the STRANGE TERMS you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the NOVICE RACEGOER will soon PICK UP a smattering of the LANGUAGE, and then rapidly become ﬂuent. The following might help those RACEGOERS keen to enhance their LANGUAGE SKILLS.

ACCUMULATOR bet involving two or more selections in different races: winnings from one are placed on the next ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience ALL WEATHER RACING Flat racing which takes place on an artiﬁcial surface AMATEUR (rider) on racecards, their names are preﬁxed by Mr, Mrs, Captain, etc., to indicate their amateur status APPRENTICE / CONDITIONAL young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while he or she is learning the business of race-riding - they can claim an Allowance depending on how many races that they have won BACKWARD used of a horse which needs time to mature CLAIMER of a race: a claiming race; of a jockey: an apprentice/conditional COLT male, ungelded horse up to four- years-old COURSE SPECIALIST horse which tends to run well at a particular track DAM mother of a horse DISTANCE the length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 miles, 2 1/2 furlongs of the Grand National the longest. Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail DISTANCE an unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post (thus ‘below the distance’ means closer home than that point) DRAW for Flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls,

of relaying odds information on the racecourse, by means of hand signals WEIGH IN/WEIGH OUT weighing of jockey before and after a race to ensure that the correct weight has been carried; the announcement ‘weighed in’ signals that the result is official, and all bets can be settled YANKEE combination bet involving four selections in different races: six doubles, four trebles and one four-horse accumulator - eleven bets YEARLING horse of either sex from 1st January to 31st December of the year following its birth.

How to place a bet with a racecourse bookmaker: 1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager. 2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, state the racecard number of your chosen horse. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet. 3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings. 4. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win • 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2 • 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 • 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 • Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4 5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the racegoer as to his rights. 6. PAUL FERGUSON’S RACEDAY PREVIEW One of today’s highlights is the Weatherbys Hamilton Wensleydale Juvenile Hurdle, a race with which Weatherbys – as sponsors – have had a long-running association. Subsequent Champion Hurdle winner Katchit finished runner-up in this Listed event back in 2006, whilst today’s seven-strong field is topped by the Amy Murphy-trained Soldier On Parade, who has already attained an official rating of 136 following three good-ground victories at Market Rasen. He needs to prove that he is equally as effective on an easier surface, but being by Dunaden there is every chance that he will cope with conditions, and he certainly sets the standard. The other three-time winner in the field is Longclaw, one of two runners in the race for trainer Gordon Elliott. On a strict form line, his Listowel victory gives him an edge over his stable-companion, but Duffle Coat threatens to be suited by a more truly-run race and the pair are fascinating contenders for a stable who looks set for a big day at Down Royal, where Envoi Allen and Abacadabras head their team of runners. Dan and Harry Skelton won this corresponding race 12 months ago with a once-raced hurdler and Uttoxeter winner Cabot Cliffs bids to follow suit, whilst both First Impression and Midnights Legacy bid to improve on their recent placed efforts over course-and-distance. The field is made up by the four-time winning filly Hiconic, who boasts the most experience of any of the seven runners. Alex Hales’ daughter of Sixties Icon made all to beat Soldier On Parade at Bangor during the summer, with the runner-up turning the tables in no uncertain terms at Market Rasen last month. Amy Murphy’s runner is a further 3lbs worse off today, but was 12 lengths clear of Hiconic when they clashed 34 days ago. Born Survivor, 2018

Elsewhere on the card, Happy Diva carries top-weight as she bids to go one place better than last year in the Listed Cash Out At bet365 Handicap Chase, a race which also features the 2018 winner, Born Survivor. The former, of course, went on to win the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham on her next start and Splash Of Ginge also used this race as a springboard to success in the ‘Paddy Power’ two years earlier. Happy Diva, Two For Gold and Vinnie The Hoodie are the only runners in today’s field who feature among the early entries for the Grade 3 at Cheltenham next month. Despite only four horses going to post for the bet365 Novices’ Chase, it looks an intriguing puzzle and could be a very informative contest, whilst the horse that I am, personally, most looking forward to seeing in action on the card is Third Time Lucki in the concluding novices’ hurdle. Fourth in the Weatherbys-sponsored Champion Bumper at Cheltenham in March, Dan Skelton’s five-year-old had earlier won twice in that sphere and made the perfect transition to hurdles at Uttoxeter a fortnight ago. He has to carry a 6lbs penalty for that victory, but he won with any amount in hand, and could develop into a very smart novice this season. I’m certainly hoping so, as he is one of my ‘Leading Prospects’ in this year’s edition of Jumpers To Follow, which is available to purchase both as a paperback and digital edition here. RACE DESCRIPTION Our opener is a two mile and ﬁve furlong handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110 and are novices - usually younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.
