THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU Welcome to Wincanton... It will be a very different looking Badger Chase Day to which we have enjoyed in the past, but it will still our most prestigious race day of the season with top prize money, top quality horses and the ITV cameras (albeit less visible). We are in for a great afternoon of racing with the annual renewal of the Unibet Elite Hurdle and the Rising Stars, both small fields, but starring some high quality runners. However, we all know that much attention is focused on the running of the 59th Badger Beers Silver Trophy and the possibility of a little bit of racing history being made. Thank you to Hall & Woodhouse for their continued support and their record of being the sport’s current longest serving sponsor - Wincanton Racecourse is hugely privileged to be the recipient. This afternoon we again recognise the immense contribution of Richard Barber to the Point-to-Point racing scene in the South West. We extend our warm wishes to all members of his family. Much gratitude is extended to all the Connections involved in this afternoon’s card and thank you for supporting Wincanton with such great quality, contributing to what should be a thrilling afternoon. A further thank you to those who have made a supreme effort to be here under such difficult circumstances. A thank you is also extended our other race day sponsors, Unibet and their third renewal of the Elite Hurdle. Their continued support is hugely valued. Let us all enjoy the fact we are racing and thank the many for their immense effort in keeping our beloved sport going through these difficult times. We very much hope we can soon open our doors to a broader audience. In the meantime please stay safe and assist us in abiding by all the social distancing and safety protocols – masks at all times please. HUW WILLIAMS General Manager

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING - THURSDAY 19 NOVEMBER We are racing on Thursday 19 November 2020 for our Afternoon Raceday with a seven race card. As we are racing behind closed doors, stay involved from home through our Racing at Home Hub. You can also follow @WincantonRaces on Twitter.

PLAY SMARTER

A few in with a shout here but Paul Nicholls has his string in great nick and also has an excellent record in this race so his unexposed chaser OLEG is taken to make amends for a late fall at Perth on his return and add to his two Flat wins this summer. Buster Thomas has yet to be out of the placings in three runs this term so rates a big threat with Hey Bud and Full Trottle worth a second look.

RICHARD J BARBER

1941-2019

From his stables in Seaborough in Dorset Richard Barber saddled well over 1,000 Point-to-Point winners. He saddled his first winner, Gerry Doyle, at Nedge Point-to-Point in 1986, and his final one, Whataknight, at Bratton Down in 2014. It is no exaggeration to say that during his time Richard Barber raised the bar and transformed the sport of Point-to-Pointing in the West Country. He trained four winners of the Cheltenham Festival's Foxhunter Chase (a joint-record) namely Rushing Wild (1992), Fantus ('95 & '97) and Earthmover ('98), and he saddled Trust Fund to win the Aintree equivalent in 2009. He was also involved with such famous names as Cheltenham Gold Cup winner See More Business, who he bought unbroken and trained to win two point-to-points before the horse moved to Paul Nicholls. He was responsible for the early development of Gold Cup runner-up Rushing Wild, who he won a Foxhunter Chase with before the horse moved to Martin Pipe's yard. Another shrewd purchase was Rock on Ruby who went on to win the Champion Hurdle in 2012. There are not many people who can claim to have bought both a Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle winner. Richard Barber’s support, counsel and advice over the years has been responsible for developing many of the leading figures in racing today in the South West of England and further afield. The hundreds of young people who worked closely with him and his wife Viv at Seaborough during the Point-to-Point days will remember the days with great joy and affection. He had a real connection with young people and was always proud of the success of others who he had helped in racing. Richard was a true country gentleman, a wise man, a caring man who regularly stood up for the underdog, a man who had time for everyone and a man who had few words but those that he imparted were well worth listening to. He made an indelible contribution to the sport of Horse Racing.

PLAY SMARTER

The unexposed DANNY WHIZZBANG is taken to enhance Paul Nicholls’ tremendous record in this race. The 7-y-o wasn’t seen to best effect on his final 2 starts of last term and makes his handicap debut in this sphere off a potentially handy mark. Nicholls also saddles Present Man and My Way and the former, who landed this prize in 2017 and 2018, is feared most. Potterman is third choice.

PLAY SMARTER

MONT SEGUR has been off the track for 11 months and has undergone wind surgery during that time, but he posted a useful effort when successful at Ludlow and returning for a red-hot yard, he may well be up to conceding a penalty. Pasvolsky was seen to good effect when runner-up in an AW bumper recently, so newcomer Silent Revolution might be the main danger.
