THE CORAL SPRINT TROPHY (HERITAGE HANDICAP)

Welcome A very warm welcome to our final fixture, from wherever you are following the action. In a challenging year for so many people, we hope the participants in the eight fascinating contests, all backed by Coral, can bring some joy and entertainment into our lives. In our feature races, one relocated from Ascot following the ravages of Storm Alex, some major southern operations have declared fancied runners. For example, Aplomb, a recent Ripon winner for William Haggas goes to post in the richest race of the day, the Coral Sprint Trophy. Always a race targeted by northern yards, a stiff challenge is fronted by Mr Lupton, a three-time winner on the Knavesmire for Malton-based, Richard Fahey. In this new digital world, if you want to keep up with the going and the Yorkshire weather, past, present and forecast; then visit our going page which connects direct to our weather station at the one furlong marker (under the windsock), click here https://www.yorkracecourse.co.uk/going-report.html For a wider sense of the atmosphere on course and behind the scenes content please do follow our social media channels. The three feature races are live on ITV1, whilst the team at Racing TV will bring you all the contests including on course insight from Niall Hannity and guests. Those choosing to have a flutter will be able to follow their fancy through their betting accounts with most major bookmakers, including today’s partner, https://sports.coral.co.uk/horse-racing/horse-racing-live/york/ We are incredibly grateful that the connections of the horses that have decided to bring them to the Knavesmire for us to enjoy and even try to pick out a winner. We hope those that are with us enjoy their lunch in the socially distanced Ebor Restaurant. Though the Parisian weather meant the Group One winners from the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival were unable to continue their York form, it was encouraging to see the leading lights of the Group Two Sky Bet City of York Stakes shine brightly through the gloom in the Group One Prix de la Foret. Congratulations to trainers William Haggas and John Quinn on the performances of One Master and Safe Voyage – it will be interesting to see if they reoppose at one of Qipco British Champions Day or the Breeders’ Cup! Indeed, equine stars based at Somerville Lodge have seen the stable to the fore in the Charles Clinkard Top Trainer Championship. The Champion of 2017, William Haggas, is tied at the top on seven with multiple winner David O’Meara, but the Upper Helmsley-based operation are shading it on second places with all to play for over the final day. Amongst the riders hoping to lift the Living North Top Jockey crown, Paul Mulrennan upped his tally to three aboard Euchen Glen in the Group Three betsafe Cumberland Lodge. However, the bird looks to have flown for the chasing pack with Danny Tudhope having banked eight winners as he closes in on Living North Title number three. Writing of great riders, since we last raced, the racing world has seen the passing of Pat Smullen - we send our deepest sympathies to Pat’s family and many friends in the racing world. We were honoured that Pat always spoke so fondly of his visits to York; we shall miss him and pay our own tribute on p14. The tremendous support of Coral and the European Breeders Fund over this challenging period is hugely appreciated, they are both longstanding and highly valued sponsors. The racing we have been able to stage this afternoon, with prize money above the new minimum values, is only possible due to the steadfast support of our sponsors, partners, loyal supporters and the many who contribute to making York a very special place. We are hugely grateful and appreciative of everyone’s support in these difficult times and look forward to the day when we can welcome everyone back to the Knavesmire. Thank you. I just hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing from the comfort of your armchair. William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course: York Racecourse

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti Wherever in the world you are reading this message, your world has changed from what it was 12 months ago. Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

Today’s Runners & Riders

WHAT’S IN A NAME? The use of traditional names for the leading races, known as “Pattern Handles” often provides an insight in to the history and geography of racing. Most people will know the story, that the Epsom Derby itself was a race named after the toss of a coin between the 12th Earl of Derby and his friend, Sir Charles Bunbury (who now also has a contest in his honour at Newmarket) way back in 1780. Others will recognise the name of Rockingham (our Listed race today) as being drawn from the Yorkshire based Prime Minster, Lord Rockingham, who served to terms of Office in the eighteenth century as well as being a leading light in the thoroughbred world. In a sport that takes its pedigree seriously, it is important to be able to track the leading races over the generations, hence the adoption of these traditional titles. Of course they now add a lustre to the generous support of the commercial sponsors who back them and help maintain the prize money. These titles also help identify races when they have to shift between racecourses, the race conditions (age, distance and such) remain the same but the venue can change when needs must. Racing followers will have seen this earlier in the season as the efforts to stage as many famous contest as possible in this contracted season saw some of them take to the road. The William Hill Kong Charles II switching from its Newmarket home to be run here at York in July, as one example. This week, it was the weather that caused the relocations, so, rescheduled from the ravages of Storm Alex last Saturday, where does the name of today’s Group 3, the Coral Bengough originate from? A relative newcomer to the Pattern, it is a race that has literally been on a journey, since it was first staged in 1986. At that time it was held over the shorter five furlong trip and formed part of the Newmarket Autumn programme. As part of the realignment of the wider racing programme, it moved homes to Ascot in 2008 by which time it was run over the current six furlong distance and had been awarded Group 3 status. In a rare contradiction to the principle of Pattern Handles, it was given permission to change its name to acknowledge the switch to Berkshire, becoming the Bengough Stakes from having been the Bentinck Stakes. The new name is a tribute to Colonel Sir Piers Henry George Bengough KCVO OBE DL who served as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot, between 1984–1997. The most notable recent winner of the contest was Blue Point in the Godolphin blue in 2017, pictured when winning the Al Basti Equiworld Gimcrack, the Charlie Appleby trained star returned to Ascot for the next two summers, to land three Group Ones at subsequent Royal Meetings, by 1.01pm today we’ll know who follows in his hoofprints

RACE DESCRIPTION A welcome late transfer after Storm Alex scuppered its staging last Saturday, this race is part of the Pattern pyramid (think divisions in football) which denotes the best contests, Listed), Group 3 (such as this), Group 2, rising to Group 1. This means it is in the top 200 races in the land. To keep it competitive, there is an allowance given to both fillies (see how Hareem Queen benefits) and younger horses (Brad The Brief gets the help in this case), a double beneficiary is 3yo filly, Stormy Girl.

KNAVESMIRE TIP DAKOTA GOLD will be happy this contest has been switched to York, following a washout at its original venue, Ascot, last weekend, as he’s a Listed winner over C&D and has really picked his form back up after winning the Beverley Bullet in August. Brando and The Tin Man are two classy operators who command the utmost respect when competing at Group 3 level and could be finishing with a flourish to fight it out for the minor money.

CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE

Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If you spot a mist cloud behind the saddling boxes that means the horses are benefiting from the cooling power of the special water-misting fans. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you enjoy your meeting, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

A LEGEND OF THE TURF PAT SMULLEN 1977 - 2020 All of us at York Racecourse have been deeply saddened by the death of one of flat racings great Champions, Pat Smullen, who lost his two-year battle with illness last month at the age of just 43. Smullen’s CV in the saddle stands comparison with the best - 9 Irish Champion Jockey titles, the cherished Anglo-Irish Derby double with Harzand in 2016, and countless big races in his beloved Ireland and around the world. Pat’s achievements on the Knavesmire included double success at the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival on Pale Mimosa. First successful in the Sir Henry Cecil European Breeders Fund Galtres Stakes of 2012 - almost inevitably trained by Dermot Weld, she returned two years later to beat Estimate, by then a Gold Cup winner for HM The Queen in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup. His haul of big race wins also included Time Test, in the famous green, pink & white colours of Prince Khalid Abdulla, for trainer Roger Charlton, in the 2016 Sky Bet York Stakes.

Time Test taking the Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes, 2016

But it was another York winner that perhaps featured only behind his classic success in terms of his best rides, amongst the enormous number of tributes he has rightly received. At the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival of 2014 Pat produced one of the outstanding Knavesmire rides to land the one-mile Clipper Logistics Handicap on Short Squeeze, trained by Hugo Palmer. He was drawn 18 in a 19 strong field - a challenge in itself and however well he was going, he was repeatedly forced to switch in trying to challenge, never resorted to ‘the persuader’ and got up in the final strides. It was the sort of jockey masterclass that every young pilot should be obliged to watch.

14

Pat guides Short Squeeze to victory in the Clipper Logistics Stakes of 2014

Pat inspired thousands by his battle with cancer in his final two years - several of our team were thrilled to be at The Curragh for his Race of Champions won by Sir AP McCoy, an initiative which raised an extraordinary seven figure sum for Irish Cancer Charities - but Pat’s support of fund raising also struck closer to home. As York regulars know we are proud to stage the annual ‘Ride of their Lives’ race as the finale to Macmillan Charity Day each June, and as part of their preparation the riders have a walk of the course on the eve of the Dante Festival. In 2019 Pat, accompanied by his close friend, Fran Berry, made the journey to support and offer his wisdom to Abi Stock, one of the riders who had lost her father to the same cruel disease he was battling. Very few knew that Pat would not be staying for racing as he was straight back to Dublin for treatment. A typically understated act of kindness by the man. All of us at York Racecourse send our deepest condolences to Pat’s widow Frances and their three children. We will always remember Pat as a Champion in the saddle, and an even better human being - we couldn’t be more proud that he counted York as his favourite English track.

KNAVESMIRE TIP In a wide-open contest the marginal preference is for the progressive DUBAI HONOUR, who won a novice race impressively at Haydock a couple of weeks ago and a mark of 90 may underestimate his ability. Just Fine has a similar profile to the selection and the recent Sandown winner may have more improvement left to come. The hat-trick seeking Classic Lord is a proven soft-ground performer and he has an obvious chance, while Galah completes the shortlist.

The coral.co.uk Rockingham Stakes (Listed Race) Six Furlongs (1,200 metres) See page 55 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION This race is part of the Pattern pyramid (think divisions in football) which denotes the best contests, Listed (such as this), Group 3, Group 2, rising to Group 1. Only open to two-year-old horses yet weight allowances mean the colts (boys) would start with more weight than any fillies (girls) to reflect their greater strength; note how Harmony Lil has the lightest burden. Prior success in this level of contest would have meant shouldering extra weight, however the class of 2020 are all in search of that breakthrough victory. An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: ABERAMA GOLD Trainer: Keith Dalgleish Jockey: Shane Gray Age/ Weight: 2-9-1 Runners: 12 Price: 10/1 Having finished fourth in the Redcar Two Year Old Trophy only a week before, Aberama Gold was not for catching in the Rockingham as he made all under Shane Gray for a three-quarters of a length success.

KNAVESMIRE TIP BEN MACDUI’s second in the Molecomb at Goodwood is the strongest piece of form on offer and the step up to 6f can see him bounce back following his most recent effort over C&D. Legal Attack was no match for an easy winner of a Group 3 at Chantilly last month but he is likely to have more to offer for a stable in excellent form at present, while Regional and Blackrod are both open to considerable improvement.

Distance: 1m 2f Race Type: Handicap Rating: 86-105 Prize Money: £25,000 Age: 3+ Stalls: Inside Rail

See page 55 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION A competitive handicap for 3yo and older horses, over one mile and two furlongs. The high handicap rating band of 86-105 means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for Test cricketers a score of over 100 denotes a top performer). The horse considered by the independent assessment of the handicapper as the best, will carry the most weight, What’s The Story, in this one. If you are seeking inspiration (or someone to blame), listen in to the team on ITV.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Ilaraab never wins by far but is progressive for William Haggas and has to be taken seriously chasing a fifth successive triumph. Crystal Pegasus has won his last two at Bath and Yarmouth and looks ready for this attempt against stronger opposition, but there was much to like about MATTHEW FLINDERS’ success at Doncaster last month. Ed Walker’s charge beat the 97-rated Magical Morning on that occasion, keeping on strongly in the closing stages, and could relish this extra yardage.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Gulliver landed this off 2lb lower last season and it is interesting he is David O’Meara’s sole representative for a race he also won in 2016. Kevin Ryan is another handler with a great record in this and Ayr Silver Cup winner Magical Spirit could be the pick of his trio. However, it might be the Ayr Gold Cup form which proves key and the third, MR LUPTON, a winner at The Curragh on his penultimate start, can continue his fine form this campaign. Soldier’s Minute, fourth on that occasion, has a fine record here and is respected, while Kynren caught the eye in fifth when dropping back in trip. Roulston Scar and Came From The Dark both arrive on the back of victory and are others to note.

6th Race 3.45 The Coral Watch Racing Online For Free ebfstallions.com Novice Stakes (Plus 10 Race)

Distance: 7f Race Type: Novice Prize Money: £12,500 Age: 2 Stalls: Inside Rail

About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres) See page 55 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION This race is limited to 2yo horses and inexperienced ones at that, over seven furlongs. Fillies like Elvrika start with a lower weight than their male counterparts. For his success at Thirsk, Ballycommon is required to carry an additional 6lbs. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. This race also qualifies under the Plus 10 bonus scheme. The advice is to rely on your choice of the two ‘p’s; pedigree or pin!

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: AL RUFAA Trainer: John Gosden Jockey: Robert Havlin Age/Weight: 2-9-5 Runners: 9 Price: 11/2 Like in the previous handicap, the winning margin was only a neck as Al Rufaa built on his debut effort nine days earlier and found extra for Robert Havlin to get off the mark at the second attempt.

KNAVESMIRE TIP ELVRIKA just lost out to a stablemate on debut at Haydock last month, but she will have entered plenty of notebooks despite that defeat and could go one better now stepping up from 6f. The £100,000 breeze-up purchase wasn’t fancied in the betting on that occasion, which makes the run even more impressive. Baradar wasn’t disgraced in a good conditions event at Newbury last time, while Invincibly has found just one too good on each of his two starts so far.

KNAVESMIRE TIP THE JAM MAN is a fascinating raider from across the Irish Sea and the nine-time NH scorer can open his Flat account. Running from 2lb out of the handicap isn’t much of a concern as his racing weight is very attractive, and forecast soft ground will pose no problems for the seven-year-old, who has been knocking on the door of late. Eddystone Rock is a dual course winner and took a step in the right direction at Chester last time. Hochfeld is a fairly reliable sort and Oliver Stammers’ 7lb claim will help him. Speedo Boy and Solo Saxophone cannot be ruled out either.

8th Race 4.55 The Emma Newton And Pete Lane Memorial Stakes One Mile, Two Furlongs About 88 Yards (2,000 metres) See page 55 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION We end with a handicap, this one is for 3yo+ horses over ten furlongs. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 95 means that though these are still quality horses, they wouldn’t have fancied their chances against the winner of our fourth race. If you win this race you can claim bragging rights until we start the 2020 season. Thank you for your support, though sadly from afar this year, Happy Christmas.

LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: DUBAI ICON Trainer: Saeed Bin Suroor Jockey: Josephine Gordon Age/ Weight: 3-9-2 Runners: 19 Price: 3/1F Dubai Icon was well-backed upped in trip and he made it a successful handicap debut under Josephine Gordon, seeing out the extra distance well to land the spoils by three-quarters of a length.

KNAVESMIRE TIP The eye is instantly drawn to Roger Varian’s three-year-old, VALYRIAN STEEL, who has won on both starts to date and should have more to offer now moving into the handicap ranks. Sucellus needs to leave behind a flat effort at Ayr but ran a promising race off 1lb lower over track and trip last month. Roger Fell’s charge was beaten by Baryshnikov in Scotland and the last-named has an obvious chance as he rolls up on a hat-trick for David Barron. Marronnier, Society Red, Finoah and Fishable are others who enter calculations.
