THE PAVERS FOUNDATION CATHERINE MEMORIAL SPRINT
Pavers prides itself on family values, and remains family owned and run today, 51 years after it was founded in 1971 by Catherine Paver. Cathy and her late husband Michael were keen racegoers and the Paver family are familiar faces at York racecourse. To honour Cathy Paver’s legacy and share the success of the business with charities and causes close to the hearts of their 1600 colleagues, the family established the Pavers Foundation in 2018. The Pavers Foundation is immensely proud to have donated over £1.2 million to date to charitable causes in the UK and overseas, including to Macmillan, alongside whom they proudly sponsor today’s race meet.

Welcome A very warm welcome to York for what looks set to be a great day of sporting action in support of a wonderful charity. We are delighted to be hosting Britain’s biggest charity raceday and Macmillan’s biggest single fundraiser once again. Well over £9m has now been raised over the previous 50 racedays due to the tremendous support of racegoers, sponsors, supporters and the hard work and generosity of so many people past and present. We thank you all and everyone can take a huge pride in helping people whose lives are affected by cancer. We send our utmost appreciation and thanks to all at Macmillan Cancer Support who dedicate themselves to helping patients and their families cope with this terrible disease. The Pavers Foundation Catherine Memorial Sprint, is run in memory of the inspirational shoe retailer, Cathy Paver, who died in 2017, the Foundation being her practical legacy. One of Britain’s richest sprint handicaps for three-year-olds, it offers prize money of £100,000. The roll of honour in this race over six furlongs includes top sprinters such as Cadeaux Genereux, Sheikh Albadou or Twilight Son. It may be that some of today’s field return for our flagship sprint contest, the Group One Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe on Friday 19 August. A pair of former Champion Jockeys, Ryan Moore on Harry Three and Jim Crowley on Watchya, will be hoping their mounts can outpace eighteen rivals. With record prize money on offer, the black type contest of the afternoon is the £60,000 Listed Sky Bet Race to the Ebor Grand Cup; which has drawn a quality field. That is hardly surprising as the winner earns a guaranteed berth in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor on Saturday 20 August, see p31 to find out how. The winner of the 59th John Smith’s Cup, Euchen Glen has travelled down from Jim Goldie’s Renfrewshire yard and promises a battle of the generations aged nine facing four-year-old opponents from Newmarket (Kemari for Godolphin) and Yorkshire (Onesmoothoperator for Brian Ellison). The Queen Mother’s Cup is the UK’s richest contest for Lady Amateur Riders. The jockeys themselves do not take any monetary reward so instead they receive their weight in fabulous Ayala champagne; do watch out for this special weighing - in ceremony in the winner’s enclosure. The late Reg Griffin was the driving force behind this charity day for some thirty-eight years and it is a privilege for York to stage the Reg Griffin Appreciation EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes in his honour. This looks a particularly high-quality juvenile renewal and the field look sure to compete at a high grade in the months ahead. There is the chance to bid for one of the fantastic lots in the Macmillan auction (see p26) or to buy a raffle ticket (see p30). The Macmillan Ride of their Lives (supported by Sky Bet) is to be staged at 12.45pm. Do raise a cheer for our intrepid amateurs; you can read their amazing stories and still boost their fundraising total by visiting their JustGiving websites, see p28 & 29 for details. After the 2.35pm race we will have a presentation for the intrepid sky divers who took part in the spring in the Macmillan Jump of their Lives – if you fancy being part of this exhilarating experience in 2023, please go to yorkracecourse.co.uk for an application form. The team have been busy preparing for your return, the Champagne Pavilion has been given a fresh new look, whilst on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand the renamed 1731 Pie Shop both celebrates the year when racing started on the Knavesmire and serves a range of home-made goodies. If we are blessed with the forecast sunny weather, then both of the County Stand Garden and Roberto Village Thank you for your support this afternoon.

Welcome to Macmillan Charity Raceday I’m so pleased that you are able to join us for what will be our 51st Macmillan Charity Raceday. Whether you are a regular supporter or joining us for the first time, I hope you have a marvellous day. Since our first event in 1971, we have raised over £9 million: of which 90% has gone to Macmillan Cancer Support to improve the lives of people living with cancer. The remaining 10% goes to a number of other charities such as York Against Cancer, St Leonard’s Hospice, Racing Welfare and the Injured Jockeys Fund. However, none of this would be possible without the continued support of York Racecourse, William Derby, and the countless racegoers, who over the years have been such a wonderful help to Macmillan. One in two of us can expect to receive a cancer diagnosis during our lifetime. Macmillan has an ambitious plan to invest in the cancer workforce across Yorkshire, providing vital care now and building a cancer care system that is fit for the future. Your support at the luncheon and active participation in our fundraising is crucial in helping us to tackle this crisis and ensure people with cancer receive the tailored care and support they need, now and in the future. I would like to thank each and every one of you who commit sponsorship, donate and bid on auction prizes and give so generously to Macmillan by attending the Raceday.

LESTER PIGGOTT ON THE KNAVESMIRE As tributes from across the racing globe have reminded us, Lester Piggott always thought of York as a favourite, and we all remember just three years ago his pride as the statue in his honour was unveiled outside the Edwardian Weighing Room.
Lester’s death, since our last raceday, has brought out so many memories, and the stats provide a record that will remain unsurpassed in all of our lifetimes. To some, he was the Long Fellow, to others Old Stone Face but to the patrons at York in a two-decade spell when he was Champion Jockey 11 times and won 30 classics, Lester was admired and respected as ‘the best’ – a man who rode his first winner at the age of 12 and the first of his 9 Epsom Derby winners while still a teenager. As for York Group Ones, the numbers tell the tale - 7 Group One Coolmore Nunthorpes - starting with back-to-back successes on Right Boy in the late 1950’s, add another 4 in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, beginning in 1959 with Petite Etoile trained by Sir Noel Murless, plus 5 Juddmonte international triumphs included more back-to-back glory, when French mare Dahlia won in 1974 & 1975. It wasn’t just in August, his 8 wins in the Paddy Power Yorkshire Cup, headed by two in 1981/82 with the great Ardross is another record unlikely ever to be broken.
Throw in the first ever staging of the Tattersalls Musidora back in 1961, remarkably a year after his first Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante triumph (St Paddy was the first, the aptly name Simply Great his last more than twenty years later). It’s no surprise that racegoers loved the man, he won 5 Sky Bet Ebor’s- the final one with Jupiter Island for Clive Brittain in 1983. Speaking when the statue was unveiled, as Lester watched on, Lord Grimthorpe, York Chairman at the time noted his own fond memories of the summer of ‘69 and My Swallow winning a brace of competitive handicaps including what was then the John Smith’s Magnet Cup. Lester said he was ‘honoured and grateful’. Everyone involved in York Racecourse sends our sincere condolences to Lester’s family. Those who were lucky enough to see one of racing’s greatest in action will doubtless pause a moment as they pass his likeness, then smile about happy days past.

P U Z Z L E CORNER GUESS WHO?
Can you name the horse that won last year’s feature race?
WHO AM I? Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed big race success at York in the past from the clues provided? 1.
I won the Sky Bet Ebor between 2005 and 2015. I ran only once at York and my jockey was a claimer at the time. The eventual winning distance was 1 3/4 lengths and in winning I took the prize back to Ireland
2.
Born in Tipperary in 1967, I took out my conditional licence at fifteen but decided that being a jockey was not for me. I worked for Jack Berry before becoming assistant trainer to Richard Fahey. I’ve trained many winners on the Knavesmire, including the 2014 Al Basti Dubai Equiworld Dante winner. Bonus point if you can guess the horse!

There are various points and different ways to bet here at York. 1. Place a bet with the tote. 2. You can go to the betting ring. 3. Use a William Hill Retail SP Betting Shop. With over 300 tote betting points located around the course, there is always one nearby. The main betting ring is situated in front of the Knavesmire Stand with an additional ring in Course Enclosure and sometimes a third set of bookies on Bustardthorpe Lawn. There are three William Hill Retail SP betting shops at York; one at the southern end of the stands, the second on the ground floor of the Knavesmire Stand and the third being the refurbished shop on the ground floor of the Melrose Stand. In addition, racegoers in the Clocktower Enclosure will find a William Hill Retail SP facility underneath the clock tower. PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe. COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.
WAYS TO BET STRAIGHT EACH WAY
Win Only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win • 3 or 4 runners – all on to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms. This must be at 1/5 odds a place 1,2 • 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 • 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 • Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 • Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4 AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.).
BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE
At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.
STRAIGHT FORECAST
Name the first and second in the correct order.
In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager. Their office is located near the Theakston Bar to the South of the main Betting Ring.

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

I got my first pony aged 8, and I started showjumping aged 10 travelling all over the country. 2 years ago I started riding out for Tim Easterby on a Saturday morning. He allowed me to ride one of his horses in a charity race at Wetherby where I was beaten by a nose. I love the idea of raising money for an excellent charity, MacMillan who work so hard for those affected by cancer. To be given the chance to ride on a Saturday meeting at York Racecourse is a dream come true.

I am riding in memory of both of my grans, who died of pancreatic cancer and gaul bladder cancer. Until 2020 I had never ridden a racehorse, but I have loved this entire experience, from fundraising important money for Macmillan to the early morning grind at a racing yard. I’ve always wanted to be a jockey but enjoyed cake too much and I am now looking forward to eating cake again – following today’s race!

In 1990 my Auntie Ellie passed away from an inoperable brain tumour and last year my godfather Peter passed away from throat cancer. Macmillan Cancer was there for us all every step of the way and so now I would love to be there for them and support Macmillan Cancer as much as I can by taking part in the Ride Of Their Lives to raise money for Macmillan Cancer. The opportunity to ride around York Racecourse in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support allows me to give something back to this wonderful charity.

Having grown up in racing, and worked in the weighing room at York, I had watched the Ride Of Their Lives several times. I considered applying but never felt that the time was right. Being in my final year of a law degree, this year wasn’t exactly perfect either! When my Grandad was diagnosed with cancer and sadly passed away in November, it gave me the final push I needed. Macmillan gave my family invaluable support and I wanted to raise funds to allow them to help others in the same way. Grandad loved racing and was so excited when I applied, so I hope I can do him proud!

I am hugely excited to be taking part in the Macmillan Ride Of Their Lives. It is a charity that touches so many people and deserved of so much support and I am delighted to help make a small difference. Riding in a race is something I have always wanted to do having ridden from a very young age, so I am fulfilling a lifelong challenge as well as raising as much money as I can for Macmillan.

In 2015 My Mum rode in the Macmillan Ride Of Their Lives for her sister and Nan, who she sadly lost to ovarian and breast cancer. I was so proud of my Mum that day, as she did amazing, she said it was one of the best days of her life, and always told me I should apply, which I had always turned down. Very sadly last year I lost my Mum unexpectedly, so not only am I riding for the amazing work Macmillan do, but I am also doing it memory of her. I am very excited to be riding a horse Mum and Dad bred and wearing my Dad’s colours. 28

Macmillan Cancer Support provide an amazing service and support to everybody touched by cancer. My family experienced this on the passing of my wonderful brother, Alan, in 2010. York Racecourse is also a fantastic experience and racing day out and through my job I am lucky to be involved in our sponsorship of The Coolmore Nunthorpe at the Ebor Festival. Therefore, this was an opportunity to show my thanks and appreciation to all involved – Thank you all – you have given me a fabulous experience.

When I was 13, my Mum was diagnosed with stage 4 Lymphoma. I am very happy to say that Mum is now fully recovered. However, Mum had a year when she was at hospital most days for treatment and periods when she was admitted to hospital. Whilst she was at hospital she received wonderful care from the NHS staff and fabulous emotional and practical support from The Macmillan Nurses. I would like to take part in The Race as a thank you to Macmillan for supporting my Mum and hope that the money I raise will mean more people receive the same care and support at their time of need.

My children have encouraged me to take part in the Ride Of Their Lives. Everyone knows someone affected by cancer and the work Macmillan do is just unbelievable and this is a great opportunity to raise money for an amazing charity. Hopefully, I won’t embarrass myself and repay everyone’s generous support!
MORGAN FAYE PRESCOTT After leaving racing in 2018 I hung up my riding out boots apart from the occasional Saturday riding out for owner James Callow. I then began to ride out more frequently until I fell back in love with riding on the gallops. Macmillan are vital in the care of friends fallen ill, even more so recently when many other services have fallen by the wayside. The chance to combine a life-long ambition and supporting a charity that is so fundamental to so many seems too good to be true. Unfortunately, Morgan had a nasty fall on the gallops a few weeks ago and due to her injuries is unable to take part in this year’s race. However, she is, very bravely, instead of riding, determined to crutch around the racecourse just before the Ride Of Their Lives. We wish Morgan the very best as she takes on her own challenge this Saturday, all in aid of Macmillan and we hope everyone at the course will show their support by cheering her on down the home straight.
CHARITY RACE PRESENTATION & BEST TURNED OUT The trophy for this race will be presented to the winning owner after the race by Michael Shinners, Head of PR, Sky Bet. Sky Bet have generously given £50 to the racing groom responsible for the best turned out horse in this race.

York - 1m 6f Saturday 20 August 2022
The winners of the four races above will be guaranteed a start position in the Sky Bet Ebor of 2022 provided they are entered and confirmed in the normal way. In a further boost to connections, if these horses run in the Sky Bet Ebor 2022 and fail to finish in the top eight places, they will have their entry fee to the race (worth £5,000) refunded, the top eight receive £5,000 or more in prize money. By virtue of winning last season’s Sky Bet Melrose, the Andrew Balding-trained Valley Forge holds the first ‘golden ticket’. The William Haggas team clearly target these contests and for the second successive year the yellow and black silks of Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum qualified through the Sky Bet Jorvik, courtesy of Gaassee this season. At the start of the month, Earl of Tyrone entered the mix for County Tipperary based Paddy Twomey. In the event that any of the “Race To The Ebor” winners were set to carry the lowest weight in the Sky Bet Ebor, that horse’s weight would be raised to the equivalent of the lowest-weighted horse that was set to run through the established entry process. To complement this initiative York Racecourse invested in Britain’s largest set of starting stalls, able to accommodate 22 runners, an increase of two participants on the 2018 configuration and used for the very first time in 2019 as Mustajeer scooped the pot in the Sky Bet Ebor.

The Queen Mother’s Cup Fifteen years after Meriel Tuffnell riding Scorched Earth won the Goya Stakes at Kempton Park in 1972 to become the first woman to ride a winner under rules, someone at York Racecourse had a brainwave. Why not add to the firmly established and by that time hugely successful Macmillan Charity Day with a prestigious Ladies Race?
Yes, there was one at Ascot on King George Day but all their other races were in the ‘for those of you who don’t want to beat the traffic’ final contest slot. So, in 1988 the tens of thousands on the Knavesmire and a big Saturday television audience were treated to the first running of the new race, The Queen Mother’s Cup, one of its most memorable renewals, ensured it was to become an cherished part of the occasion, as racing’s equivalent of The Judges gave it a resounding 10! A good field went to post that afternoon. The odds-on favourite was McCubbin, trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil and ridden by his then wife, Julie, but many eyes were on Insular, owned and trained by Ian Balding, who was to go off at 14-1. The reason? This was a horse formerly owned by The Queen Mother and bred by Her Majesty The Queen. To crown the Royal link, on board was The Princess Royal, Eventing Gold Medallist and the first member of the British Royal Family to be selected for the Olympics. Haweel, in Sheikh Hamdan’s colours made the early running, with Insular, who had run in the Imperial Cup over Hurdles at Sandown just three months earlier, in second. Turning for home Julie Cecil made her move. But Insular was far too good for them, winning without being asked a serious question The Princess Royal, the pair came home by 12 lengths, so amid scenes of great excitement York’s new race, and now Britain’s Premier Ladies Race, had earned its own Royal Warrant. Often a race where father/daughter combinations occupy the T. & J. slots in the racecard, a footnote to the Royal victory was that our own Racing Manager, Anthea Leigh, had a briefly close up view of proceedings, when finishing eighth aboard Renshaw Wood, trained by her father, Peter Beaumont. If there remains any doubt, then ITV Racing presenter, Francesca Cumani, is probably a good person to ask, as her family enjoyed great success in the early years of the century. 32
In 2004 the nation weas treated to a classic episode of ‘Mother Knows Best’ as with Francesca a socially distanced 6th, Sara Cumani on Mephisto scrambled home from Court of Appeal by a head. Roll forward, then Idealistic in the season of Royal Ascot at York followed by Soulacroix gave Francesca back-to-back wins.
This is a race that throws up so many tales over so many years, more than a few of which involve the ‘goings on’ as the post-race ceremonies include the jockey winning her weight in champagne, this year from Ayala, in a public ‘weigh in’ in the Winners Enclosure. In 2018 Sophie, one of the twin daughters of trainer Michael Dods, won the race to her father’s special delight, as it was days before they had a joint 21st birthday party - about as long as the prize lasted.
And through the years there have been several winning riders who have been part of the extended (in some cases very extended) family of a certain Sherriff Hutton based trainer who has tried, in a moment of absent mindedness to rest his foot on the scales at that all important moment… It’s a special race, for a special cause on a special day. There won’t be a more competitive race anywhere this weekend. 33

RACE DESCRIPTION The first race is a competitive handicap for lady amateur riders. Such races are designed for close competition so the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best past performance will be the highest rated horse. Thorne Hall is the highest rated here and so will carry most weight. This is the richest race in the land for these amateur riders, however as amateurs they can’t share the cash, so instead the winner will receive her weight in Ayala champagne.

KNAVESMIRE TIP The unexposed Kingsofthemidlands performed creditably when runner-up at Goodwood on his return last week and, with that run under his belt, Andrew Balding’s gelding can produce a bold showing. However, TOPANTICIPATION showed further improvement when scoring over course and distance last time, beating a subsequent winner in the process, and makes the most appeal. C&D winner Arctic Fox, who wears cheekpieces for the first time, and Vindolanda are others to consider.

RACE DESCRIPTION Again, a handicap, this time seeking equal competition by being amongst horses aged three and above. While the last race was for good horses rated up to 90, this race is for those a rated up to 105, and like for the cricketers at Trent Bridge, a score of over 100 denotes a top performer. Those closer to the top will carry more weight; Azano is just that, carrying the heaviest burden today. So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, look how Boardman is one that carries both consonants.

KNAVESMIRE TIP This can go the way of BOARDMAN, who ran out a ready winner at Chester last month. Tim Easterby’s progressive six-year-old appeals as the type to improve further yet and, from a 4lb higher mark, he can repel the challenge of Maywake, who arrives in search of a four-timer. The consistent Lion Tower looks set to go well once more along with dual C&D winner Challet. Young Fire is another to consider from just 2lb above his last winning mark.

YORK TO ASCOT LINKED IN HISTORY AND QUALITY
Getting on for twenty years may have slipped past since its visit, but the links between York and the Royal Meeting continue to be strong. Here, we look at a few highlights…
SPRINTING
History shows us: Battaash as the star of the modern era, with his final win at York coming in the Coolmore Nunthorpe in 2020 having already landed the fastest contest in Berkshire for the speedballs. While 2015 Group 1 Platinum Jubilee Stakes winner, Twilight Son, took victory in the Pavers Charity Sprint here in the same year, with 2016 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack winner, Blue Point, winning both the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes and Jubilee Sprints of 2019. The week ahead: York regular Winter Power looks set to line up again in this year’s King’s Stand. She’s won three times at York and Tim Easterby will be hoping she can do the North South double next week. Lusail was an impressive winner in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes. The three-year-old has entries in the St James’ Palace Stakes and the Commonwealth Cup. The Commonwealth Cup also has a York connection, as two of those at the front of the market have run well at York in the past. Ehraz finished fifth in the Tattersalls Acomb Stakes and is hot property in the betting market.
Winter Power
JUVENILES History shows us: Some of the very best two-year-olds in training are sent to York and the victory of Signora Cabello in the 2018 Knights Solicitors EBF Marygate Fillies’ Stakes, before John Quinn’s filly took the Queen Mary Stakes, is indicative of this. The week ahead: Pillow Talk, who was a Knavesmire winner at the Dante Festival, looks to be heading for the Queen Mary Stakes. The opening race of the Friday at York in May has provided Ascot winners in previous years, also keep an eye on the second Yahsat.
STAYERS History shows us: Stradivarius is indeed the champion stayer after he notched a third win in the Paddy Power Yorkshire Cup during the 2021 Dante week. The week ahead: The Clarehaven star will surely line up in search of Gold Cup number four on Thursday however he will be going up against the rapid improver Trueshan for Alan King. The six-year-old was seen finishing eighth in the 2020 Sky Bet Ebor and has gone onto become a top Group performer. York contender Tashkan will be hoping he can reverse the form with Stradivarius. Stradivarius
46
MIDDLE DISTANCE History shows us: Sir Michael Stoute’s record in this division is something of a sensation - Telescope won the Group 2 Sky Bet Great Voltigeur here before going onto Ascot glory. He repeated the York to Ascot trick with Snow Sky in 2015. The Stoute/York/Hardwicke connection continued as the 2017 Al Basti Equiworld Fanny Logan Dubai Dante third, Crystal Ocean, took the 2018 Hardwicke Stakes. More recently Fanny Logan won the British Stallion Studs EBF Lyric Fillies’ Stakes in 2019 before going onto win the 2020 Hardwicke Stakes for John Gosden. The week ahead: Emily Upjohn was an unlucky second in this year’s Epsom Oaks after stumbling when leaving the stalls. She was an electric winner of the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes at this year’s Dante Festival and could well line up at Ascot this week if the race hasn’t taken too much out of her. The Group 2 Ribblesdale would be the obvious route to give her a Group 2 in the North and South East.
PICK ME AN OUTSIDER
1895 Duke Of York Clipper Logistics Stakes winner Highfield Princess has just the one entry next week. She looks set to take her place in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes and has already won at the Royal meeting in 2021. In a hot looking renewal, she may be the forgotten one in the race and could have to overcome some other York winners in Emaraaty Ana and Great Ambassador.
THE HANDICAPS History shows us: Picking handicap winners is never easy however the Knavesmire can be a indicator for horses that will run well. Aricebo has been a real hero for connections, running six times at York. Last year he gave each-way punters a nice return in the King’s Stand. Escobar 2020 Royal Hunt Cup winner Real World went onto taste Group success in the Sky Bet Stakes during the Ebor Festival, completeing the Ascot York double. The week ahead: Baybridge looks to be a leading player for the master Sir Michael Stoute. The four-year-old colt took home the spoils at the end of 2021 in a 0-100 handicap on our finale weekend. He also has an entry in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and it will be interesting to see whether he steps up in trip. Brunch is entered in today’s York Seat Unique Ganton Stakes, should he run well a trip to the Royal Hunt Cup on Wednesday could be on the cards. Escobar finally got his head in front in our big field handicap at the end of May. The eight-year-old had been on quite the losing run and will now be looking to build on that win in the Royal Hunt Cup where he has run well before.
THE OTHER WAY AROUND
A strong cast list but as a leading man, the mighty Frankel won the Queen Anne two months before his triumph in the Juddmonte International. So follow the Ascot form back to York for this year’s Ebor Festival. Last year, we saw Real World follow up a win at the Royal Meeting so notebooks and iPads at the ready.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our third race today is a part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed (as here), Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. This race is open to four-year-old horses and older and is over a stayer’s trip of a mile and three quarters. The winner is guaranteed a place in the stalls back here for the Sky Bet Ebor on Saturday 20 August, so take notes- a placed horse may also fancy their chance of that famous prize. KNAVESMIRE TIP MANDOOB was given wind surgery in December before returning to action at Ascot last month, where he filled the runner-up berth behind Al Aasy. Brian Meehan’s charge kept on well in the closing stages to suggest this longer trip should be well within range and, with improvement likely, he can strike. Kemari is feared most for the all-conquering Team Godolphin, while Without A Fight is similarly respected down in grade. The admirable Euchen Glen is not without a chance either.

RACE DESCRIPTION The richest race today is a sprint handicap. The best on past performance will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight than the lowest rated opponent; the respective rating of Gisburn and Devaste sees them more a stone apart! This race is only open to horses aged three. If you are looking for a tip then perhaps follow the racecourse tipster, Baron Ferdinand, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A decent third in Listed company on her latest outing last August, ATOMIC LADY could benefit from a return to handicap company. She performed with credit given the circumstances and still managed a bronze medal behind Flotus, who is now rated 111. She should not be discounted on her return to action. Ingra Tor and Harry Three are closely matched on a piece of Newmarket form and must also be taken seriously.

Reg Griffin (1929-2008) Founder and organiser of Charity Day 1971-2008 Born in Liverpool on Valentine’s Day in 1929, the son of a railway guard, Reg left school seemingly destined for a career as a surveyor. However, having been captivated by walking the Grand National course aged just five, racing was always his first love and, after National Service, he began to convert dreams into reality. Griffin joined Phil Bull at Timeform in 1957, following spells as secretary/assistant to Jack Fawcus at Middleham and Arthur Budgett at Whatcombe. Ten years later, he became managing director and, thirty-two years on from that, chairman, a position he retained until formally retiring in November, 2007. In 1970, Noel Nettleship, then Doncaster racecourse manager, forwarded a letter to Phil Bull from a Mrs Irene Hunt, regional organiser for the National Society for Cancer Relief. Mrs Hunt, based in Sheffield, was aware that a charity race meeting had been organised at Ascot and was hoping someone might do the same in the North. Bull passed the letter to Reg- and, as the old saying goes, what followed became history. Reg agreed to help, provided no one interfered. Having persuaded the Jockey Club to grant a fixture to a commercial firm for the first time (at Doncaster in ‘71), he then secured sponsorship totalling £60,000 for a sevenrace card. At the time, this was the richest one-day meeting ever staged in Britain and the first at which every event was broadcast live on national radio. It also received extensive television coverage on ITV, so today the wheel comes full circle. Come the day, the Queen, making her first appearance at Town Moor for fifteen years, watched her colt Charlton, named in honour of the World Cup winning football brothers, Bobby and Jack, land the featured William Hill Gold Trophy. The following year, the Jockey Club refused to help, telling Reg that he must find an existing programme. Thanks to the late Charles Halifax (father of the current Earl, Ernie), the meeting was moved to a Saturday at York in mid-June, where it has remained ever since. Due to a whole host of loyal supporters, many of whom are present today, the race day, which has so far raised over £7.5million, million, continues. Today's 58th £9 race, run since 2011 in Reg's honour, was actually won in 2010 by a horse named after him - the name, Sir Reginald, what else!

RACE DESCRIPTION A race limited to 2yo maiden horses; meaning those yet to win. Racing recognises that in their first season, the different sexes will develop differently, so the filly Bella Kopella carries less weight. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. Down to your choice of the two “ps”, pedigree or pin.

KNAVESMIRE TIP This could be one for the Sky Plus, with a number of interesting juveniles going to post. Top owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum looks to have a very strong hand with smartly-bred newcomer Eagle Day and Karl Burke’s COLD CASE, and the latter gets the vote following a promising debut effort over 5f at Carlisle last month. Installation looks the best of Richard Fahey’s trio and he demands respect, while Winter Crown and Bella Kopella are others to watch out for.

RACE DESCRIPTION We switch back to handicaps. Your vital statistics are; four-year-old and older, rated 66-85, going one mile and a one furlong. Connections can opt to use an apprentice jockey and then get a reduction in weight, notice Visibility ridden by Jack Duern can claim (that means reduce) his weight by 3lbs. KNAVESMIRE TIP AL QAASIM has enjoyed a fine campaign in 2022, winning on four occasions including on his latest outing at Musselburgh, and the five-year-old could have more to offer with a first-time visor applied. Pisanello is of considerable interest dropping back a furlong in trip following his latest effort when fourth at Ripon and with the handicapper dropping him 2lb. Harswell Duke has been running consistently well of late and he is capable of being in the mix along with Garden Oasis and Electrical Storm.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Slight preference for recent Doncaster second RECALL THE SHOW. Scott Dixon struck with Fine Wine here recently and this five-year-old arrives with a similar improving profile as he looks to get the better of Ginger Jam, who is likely to improve for the step up in trip. The consistent Ghathanfar must also enter calculations along with the unexposed Adnaan, who could be well treated on his handicap debut. Others to note include Our Little Pony, Runninwild and Ventura Express.
