Welcome A very warm welcome to Juddmonte International day, from wherever you are following the action. In a difficult year for so many people, we hope the star horses and their riders, can bring some joy into our lives this week. In this new digital world, if you want to keep up with the going and the Yorkshire weather, past, present and forecast; then visit our going page which connects direct to our weather station at the one furlong marker (under the windsock), click here https://www.yorkracecourse.co.uk/going-report.html For a wider sense of the atmosphere on course and behind the scenes content please do follow our social media channels #EborAtHome. The team at ITV will bring you five races a day and if you want to follow all the action then Racing TV are covering all 28 contests. We are incredibly grateful that the connections of such high-quality horses have decided to bring them to the Knavesmire for us to enjoy and even try to pick out a winner. For over thirty seasons now, our flagship race has been supported by Juddmonte Farms and we remain hugely appreciative of their backing. We are delighted to have recently extended this enduring partnership. This year’s renewal of the Juddmonte International looks to be another cracker, with the field boasting some thirteen top flight victories between them. The world’s highest rated horse Ghaiyyath will attempt to continue an outstanding season for Charlie Appleby and Team Godolphin, having won the Group 1 Coronation Cup and Coral- Eclipse. The winning yard last season was Ballydoyle and Aidan O’Brien has sent the fabulous globetrotting mare, Magical, to try and retain the famous trophy. Champion trainer, John Gosden provides a link to Royal Ascot form, through Prince of Wales’s hero, Lord North. We are delighted to also welcome QIPCO 2,000 Guineas winner Kameko, another son of Kitten’s Joy and therefore half-brother to 2018 winner Roaring Lion, under champion jockey Oisin Murphy. Add in recent York winner Rose of Kildare (Tattersalls Musidora) and we have a mouthwatering renewal of this blue riband contest. Marvellous though our feature race is, the rest of the card is also dripping with quality. The Group Two Sky Bet Great Voltigeur is a fascinating contest as well as being one that shapes the final Classic. As last season’s victor, Logician, ably demonstrated when becoming the 14th colt to do the Knavesmire/Town Moor double. Every race this week will tell a story; the opening Sky Bet and Symphony Group Stakes has a maximum field of 22 putting our newish stalls to the test and has been a great pointer to the Portland with its unusual distance of five and a half furlongs. The Group Three Tattersalls Acomb is the first of ten Group races over these four days, a race won by horses that have progressed to Classic success such as King’s Best in millennium year and a more recent Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas winner, Phoenix of Spain. The richest nursery handicap in the land, one of a dozen contests this week to be backed by Sky Bet concludes today’s card and will set a pattern in the annual joust between bookie (welcome back, Joe Huddlestone and Keith Johnson, William Hill team and our Tote operators) and Knavesmire followers that will culminate in Saturday’s Sky Bet Ebor. Its our pleasure to welcome five former Champion Jockeys - Oisin, Jim, Paul, Ryan and Silvestre - to the Weighing Room. It is tremendous to see Paul Hanagan in particular, back on the Knavesmire as he marks his first week back in the saddle after injury. Jim Crowley is bearing down on his 2,000th winner and looks set to be only the fifth jockey to reach this landmark (Frankie, Ryan, Joe Fanning and Jamie Spencer already have that rare badge). The top class racing we are staging this week, with £2.3m in prize money, is only possible due to the steadfast support of our sponsors, partner, loyal supporters and the many who contribute to making York a very special place. We are hugely grateful and appreciative of everyone’s support in these difficult times and look forward to the day when we can welcome everyone back to the Knavesmire. Thank you. I just hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing from the comfort of your armchair and can share the thrills of the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival. Stay safe. Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

P U Z Z L E CORNER GUESS WHO?

Can you name this three-time Juddmonte International-winning pilot in the 2000’s, hailing from the Emerald Isle?

WHO AM I? Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed past success in today’s Juddmonte International Stakes from the clues provided? 1. I was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire in 1940 and began my racing career in the early 1970’s as assistant to Ricky Vallance, who trained at Bishops Canning, Wiltshire. However, when Vallance lost his licence I quickly had to find alternative employment and set up as a market trader. But the lure of racing proved too strong and so I decided to take the plunge and become a trainer in my own right at the end of the 1970’s. 2. Although I was a dual purpose trainer from the start, in the early part of my career I was more associated with jump racing than the Flat, mainly because I was responsible for one of the most popular chasers in training. Despite that perception, I have always done well on the Flat as shown by my record. With just over 1,600 winners in Britain to my name, more than 1,100 have been on the Flat. 3. I seem to make a habit of training horses beloved by the public and was responsible for one of the most popular stayers who ran in the years just before and after the turn of the Millennium. In 1990, I trained In The Groove to win my only Classic, the Irish 1000 Guineas and she went on to win the Juddmonte International Stakes at York that year. It was the first of my two victories in the race, the second coming 25 years later when my 50-1 shot Arabian Queen, became the first of only two horses ever to beat the brilliant Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Golden Horn.

YORK’S RACING CHALLENGE 1. Who are the only two jockeys to have ridden three consecutive winners of the Juddmonte International and can you name the horses on which they prevailed? A point for each. 2. Jamie Spencer rode Phoenix of Spain to victory in the Tattersalls Acomb Stakes in 2018, for your first point, where did the partnership strike at Group One level earlier that season? Then, can you name which fellow subsequent Classic winner Spencer rode to victory in the 2003 renewal? Bonus points if you can name the Classic. 3. Last year’s Sky Bet Great Voltigeur winner, Logician, went on to Classic glory in the St Leger and became the 14th horse to do the double. Don’t panic, we won’t ask you to name all of the previous 13, just the most recent. Bonus points for the year, his trainer and the man who did the steering. 4. The Juddmonte International is one of the best races on planet Earth, but can you remember when the inaugural race was run, who won it and why it was such a big story at the time? 5. Can you name some of this afternoon’s runners from the clues below? A – Prime Minister 1770-1782. B – Pakistan’s second city. C – Formerly Byzantium. D – Controversial 1987 book. E – Unsung explorer who first circumnavigated the globe in the 16th century.

1st Race 1.45 The Sky Bet & Symphony Group Stakes Five Furlongs About 89 Yards (1,000 metres)

Distance: 5f 89y Race Type: Handicap Rating: 0-105 Prize Money: £30,000 Age: 3+ Stalls: Centre

See page 74 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION A competitive handicap for 3-y-o+ horses, run over the unusual trip of five and a half furlongs. Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best, on past performance, will be the highest rated, and so will carry the most weight – Tarboosh carries the top weight today. Listen to the experts on ITV Racing to form a view.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Michael Dods won this 12 months ago and could strike again with the hat-trick seeking JAWWAAL, who backed up his Doncaster reappearance with a taking win at Ascot last time, accounting for plenty of his rivals here in the process. David O'Meara has a typically strong hand with recent Thirsk winner Watchable, Muscika and Arecibo, who has been knocking on the door in these competitive handicaps so far this term. Acclaim The Nation has the chance to reverse form with his Goodwood conqueror Only Spoofing now 1lb better off, while Jabbarockie could offer some value in first-time cheekpieces.

THE RAY GILPIN AWARD

RAY GILPIN (1942-2015)

FOR THE TOP JOCKEY OF THE WELCOME TO YORKSHIRE EBOR FESTIVAL

This award remembers Ray Gilpin, a popular figure in both the Weighing Room & Press Room who sadly passed away in 2015. A proud welshman, you’ll notice the armband worn by the rider in front, is in scarlet. The colour of the scarf that Ray always wore to the races. Frankie Dettori is amongst the previous winners.

BRIGADIERS, DOCTORS & LIONS THE JUDDMONTE INTERNATIONAL In life, not just in racing, there is something important about First Impressions. Those who attended, or watched the inaugural running of the International, now often referenced through its long standing sponsor, Juddmonte, in 1972 would have joined in a chorus of ‘wow’and that was before the stalls opened.

Brigadier Gerard

The race brought together Roberto and Rheingold, separated by a nostril in a controversial Derby, and from the older generation a certain Brigadier Gerard unbeaten and with a host of records in an at that point, all conquering career. To add to the intrigue Lester Piggott, who had won on him at Epsom, had ‘changed horses’ and rode Rheingold, opening the door for Panamanian born Braulio Baeza to fly in to ride Roberto. The rest is history - after Bright Beam, the pacemaker, was swept aside, Baeza went for home, Joe Mercer on the Brigadier went out after him, a packed Knavesmire roared, but for the only time in his career it wasn’t to be the Brigadier’s day - Roberto won by three lengths. Above all, York’s new race was a spectacular hit and has stayed as such ever since.

Dahlia

Authorized

It has an extraordinary Roll of Honour. French legend, Dahlia, won it twice in the early years, and Frankie Dettori has racked up five wins to date - the most recent on Authorized, his Derby winner, in 2007. The pick of the pre millennium years was probably Rodrigo de Triano, with Piggott up beating Dr Devious in 1992 - another classic showdown.

Rodrigo De Triano (left)

Sea The Stars

And, memorably, in recent years, it has served up some really special ‘I was there’ days. 2009 - Sea The Stars did a ‘Veni Vidi Vici’ on the Knavesmire, setting the track record in doing so. 2012 - The great Frankel over a mile and a quarter for the first time, a packed house, and incredibly emotional scenes as a clearly poorly Sir Henry watched on from the stands at his beloved York. Himself did his stuff with consummate ease.

Frankel

The top names have kept on coming - Derby winner Australia in 2014 and Roaring Lion in 2018 winning for the Classic generation have been special. There will not be a crowd in 2020 - but there will be a new name added to one of the most illustrious winners lists in European Racing. One thing is for sure - he will be out of the very top drawer. CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE

Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If you spot a mist cloud behind the saddling boxes that means the horses are benefiting from the cooling power of the special water-misting fans. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you enjoy your meeting, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff.

To further encourage this competition, Breeders’ Cup Ltd have offered an attractive incentive to the winner as part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series. The successful horse this afternoon, if nominated with Breeders’ Cup, will receive both free entry and a guaranteed start gate in the one mile and four furlongs $6m Breeders’ Cup Longines Turf to be run at Keeneland in Kentucky on Saturday November 7th. Combined with a travel allowance of $40,000 this is a bonus to US bound connections. BLOODSTOCK

H

EROES

JUDDMONTE FARMS

Most people are familiar with the terms “thoroughbred” and “pedigree”. But did you know that the former means the horse is descended from one of just three stallions? Known as the foundation stallions, two of them performed their duties within twenty miles of York. The Darley Arabian stood at Aldby Hall near Stamford Bridge, whilst the Byerley Turk was at Goldsborough Hall, just outside Knaresborough. The trio was completed by the Godolphin Arabian, a resident just over the county line at Longsford Hall in Derbyshire. Over the intervening three hundred years some of the blood lines have become more successful than others and this genealogy gives every horse its pedigree, or family tree. Coming up to date and Juddmonte Farms, sponsors of today’s feature race continue the bloodstock tradition of great stallions. Established in 1977, Juddmonte Farms was set up by Prince Khalid bin Abdullah. On most occasions, the superstar stallions of their generation had proved themselves on the racecourse. It is easy to appreciate how the offspring of great horses such as Frankel will feel a weight of expectation on their withers. The colt formerly trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil enjoyed his finest hour at York when landing the Juddmonte International for his connections in 2012 to take his unbeaten record to thirteen. His first crop proved themselves at a high level on the racetrack with Queen Kindly taking the 2016 Sky Bet Lowther, while the Group Two Sky Bet Great Voltigeur saw Cracksman hack up before going on to multiple Group 1 glory elsewhere, while the likes of Franconia and Frankly Darling have high hopes in big races later this week so it’s clear that Frankel’s offspring have inherited their sire’s class. Based at Banstead Manor, the success of this operation can be seen with Oasis Dream, a Champion at both two and three. His three Group 1 victories included a devastating turn of foot in the 2003 Coolmore Nunthorpe where he made all, quickening close home to win by two and a half lengths. In the breeding shed he has also enjoyed plenty of success, having sired no less than 27 winners of worldwide Group 1s.

Frankel

The most famous of his offspring is probably classy filly Midday who landed six top-level victories during her career, including two notable successes here on the Knavesmire - the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton Stakes and the Darley Yorkshire Oaks - as well as being narrowly denied in the Juddmonte International by stablemate Twice Over. Another of Oasis Dream’s sons, Muhaarar, continued the York connection. The Al Basti Equiworld Gimcrack winner subsequently added four Group 1s in 2015, en-route to being crowned Cartier Champion Sprinter and is now producing his own speedy sons and daughters. Recently retired but still enjoying life at Banstead Manor is Dansili, who sired top class racehorses such as The Fugue (another to have a Knavesmire Group One on her CV) but he has also started to earn a reputation as a sire of sires. One of his sons, top sprinter Bated Breath, stands as a Juddmonte stallion and has already had high-level success with Royal Ascot winners and recent York winner, Prompting, going on to Glorious Goodwood victory. Another recent smash hit in the bloodstock world has been Juddmonte’s exceptional miler, Kingman - a winner of seven of his eight starts, including four Group 1 victories, the son of Invincible Spirit has already produced two European Classic winners in his first two crops and is already the fifth leading sire in Europe on average sale prices of his progeny. They include Persian King, Palace Pier, Calyx, Headman, Nausha and Sangarius amongst many others who are only just starting out their racing careers - it’s almost certain that Kingman will be known as one of the truly great sires in years to come. What is evident is the strength in depth that Juddmonte possess. The quality for Frankel, Oasis Dream, Bated Breath and Kingman, coupled with the passion and knowledge of the organisation’s founder, they look set to be sat at the top table for a few generations yet.

Oasis Dream

KNAVESMIRE LEG FRANKEL

NDS

From the very beginning when Roberto beat Brigadier Gerard, the Juddmonte International has held a very special place in the racing calendar, so much so that in 2014 it was rated the best race in the world by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities. The race has been won by some of the best thoroughbreds in Europe over the past 44 years but based on his official ranking and the view of many informed observers that day, the very best was Frankel. Ahead of his run in the Juddmonte of 2012, Frankel was unbeaten in 12 starts, which included eight at Group 1 level. In his early days, Frankel had perhaps been a little headstrong, as witnessed when he demolished a top class field in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas. So despite the fact that he had been in a completely different league to any of his rivals during his preceding races, there were a few doubters that he would not be suited by the step up to a mile and a quarter on the Knavesmire. After all, just how good would Usain Bolt be over 1500metres? The betting market did not share these reservations so three weeks after winning the QIPCO Sussex Stakes, Frankel lined up the 1-10 on favourite here at York. His trainer, the late Sir Henry Cecil and jockey Tom Queally had a plan and their prized asset looked cool, calm and relaxed through the early stages of the race. As any of the bumper 30,163 crowd will happily tell you; turning into the straight Frankel was plumb last. But, he was travelling supremely well and without an ounce of effort from his jockey, cruised his way into the lead with just over a quarter of a mile to run. At that point Queally gave a shake of the reins and racing’s superstar colt accelerated away in one of those truly memorable sporting moments. He was to lead his eight top-drawer rivals home by an impressive seven lengths. Farhh, the subsequent Lockinge Stakes winner, filled the runners-up spot with the four-time Group 1 winner St Nicholas Abbey third and stablemate, winner of the 2011 race in the same Prince Khalid Abdullah silks, Twice Over, completing the frame, so highlighting the strength of the race. It was never a day about punting profit, it was always about celebrating a hero and so the Knavesmire crowd generated an electric atmosphere as he was led into the Winners’ Enclosure.

He raced in the silks of Prince Khalid Abdullah at whose Banstead Manor Stud near Newmarket he had been born. Yet the public adopted the great horse, partly due to his stunning achievements and partly due to his trainer, Sir Henry Cecil. Cecil, had long been a favourite trainer with the knowledgeable Knavesmire crowd, but had been battling stomach cancer. Despite the cruel hand that he had been dealt, he remained passionate about the mighty Frankel. The Master of Warren Place made what was to prove his farewell trip to York and all present will testify to the emotion etched into his face. “It’s fantastic and it’s great for Yorkshire, they’re very supportive of racing and deserve to see him. [It helped me feel] 20 years better,” he said. In October, Frankel won the QIPCO Champion Stakes on British Champions Day to cap an unbeaten career. “He’s the best I’ve ever had - the best I’ve ever seen”, Cecil told the media after the race. And so the fabulous Frankel bowed out the winner of all 14 of his races and just short of £3million of prize money. He now stands at his owner’s Banstead Manor Stud, just a few miles from Warren Place and his progeny have already made a considerable mark on the Knavesmire Queen Kindly was an explosive winner of a Sky Bet Lowther, while the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur also fell to one of his sons, Cracksman, in 2017. While none of his sons or daughters line up to follow in the foosteps of their great father in taking today’s Juddmonte International, Frankel does have Juan Elcano carrying his flag in today’s Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and three of his daughters representing him in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks tomorrow. Sir Henry Cecil passed away on 11th June 2013. He was much loved here at York, so one of the greatest trainers of the modern era is remembered in the cast iron gates at the Northern End of the racecourse, close by the statue of his most famous charge, the mighty Frankel. 35

TRAINERS As Sir Michael Stoute is without a runner this afternoon, John Gosden’s record of five winners means he is the man to follow and he is represented by Darain here. Aidan O’Brien has three victories to his name and will be hoping to add to that tally with Mogul. BETTING Eight of the last ten winners came from the first three in the betting and it must be pointed out that six of those were the favourite. The record of market leaders has been boosted in recent years with Telescope, Postponed, Idaho, Cracksman and Logician all justifying favouritism and with all of the last ten winners having gone off at 9/1 or shorter, it seems those towards the head of the market are the ones to focus on. RECENT FORM A last time out victory is not the be all and end all when looking for that elusive winner as only three of the last ten winners of this race have arrived here on the back of a success last time. However, a solid run on their latest start offers some encouragement with all but two of the last ten winners having finished no worse than fourth on their most recent outing.

DISTANCE It might surprise you to learn that of the last ten winners, only Old Persian and Logician had previously won over 1m4f, therefore, we shouldn’t be put off any runner just because they are trying the trip for the first time. Rule Of Law (2004) and Milan (2001) won this event having only ever won over 7f prior to running here whilst the 2016 winner, Idaho, had only won over a mile. WEIGHT Every horse is initially allotted 9st (8st 12lb until 2014) before penalties are given for previous wins at Group 1 or Group 2 level this season. Although Old Persian managed an extra 3lb in 2018, you have to go all the way back to 1995 and Pentire to find the last horse to successfully carry a penalty in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur. Therefore, history suggests that Pyledriver may find it tricky this afternoon. KEY TRENDS Finished in first four last time Single-figure odds Trained by John Gosden or Aidan O'Brien

CONCLUSION With both the Gosden and O'Brien stables represented by just one runner this year, it would be no surprise to see this come down to Darain and Mogul. The former is a beautifully bred son of Dubawi - a brother to Too Darn Hot, So Mi Dar and Lah Ti Dar - and has done nothing wrong in both of his starts in novice company so far, but this is a big step up in class for him and perhaps MOGUL has the all-important experience edge when it really matters. The Aidan O'Brien-trained brother to 2019 Juddmonte International winner, Japan, was a good winner of the Group 3 Gordon Stakes after a couple of disappointing runs this season and perhaps that will be the springboard to go on to better things now, including this prestigious Group 2 prize and, ultimately, the St Leger. Highland Chief wasn't far away from MOGUL in that Gordon Stakes and could fill the places, while Roberto Escobarr was wildly impressive here when breaking his maiden and could be good enough to take this step up in class in his stride. Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. All trends are ten year based unless stated. 37

The Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes

FACT FILE:

Distance One mile and four furlongs (2,400 metres)

Prize money £75,000

WHERE DOES WHY IS IT AN THE RACE NAME IMPORTANT COME FROM? RACE?

Voltigeur was a famous Yorkshire-trained Classic winner who carried the colours of the Earl of Zetland, to victory in both the Derby at Epsom and the St Leger in 1850. The Flying Dutchman had also landed the Derby-St Leger double the previous year. The so called “Great Match” between the pair was held at York the following spring, over two miles with £1,000 side stakes (a sum equivalent to £700,000 in today’s shops) and the Knavesmire was packed to bursting to see the Flying Dutchman win the money. Yet, in one of those quirks of history the battling Voltigeur won the hearts on the day and he is now remembered with this race, the 550 seat restaurant at York as well as being the horse featured in our logo.

It has long been the premier trial for the final Classic of the year and in five decades or more, the road to St Leger fame has often started here on the Knavesmire. When last year’s winner Logician went on to glory on Doncaster’s Town Moor he became the 14th Great Voltigeur winner to do just that.

FIRST WINNER? The Jack Jarvis-trained Castle Rock won the inaugural race in 1950 when ridden by Bill Rickaby.

ANY OTHER SUCCESSES?

In 2009 Mastery finished runner-up to Monitor Closely but reversed the placings in the St Leger. Three year’s later Encke could only finish third here, but he broke the hearts of the racing public when he defeated the Triple Crown-seeking Camelot at Doncaster. It was a similar story in 2018 as the York third, Kew Gardens, turned the tables on Old Persian in the season’s final classic.

GLORY DOWN UNDER The Charlie Appleby-trained Cross Counter was second in this back in 2018. Some ten weeks and 10,500 miles later and the colt carried the Godolphin colours to triumph in the Lexus Melbourne Cup. So becoming the first Britishtrained winner of the race that stops a nation.

A ROYAL HICCUP...

Alleged is arguably the best Betway Great Voltigeur winner not to go on to score at Doncaster. Trained by Vincent O’Brien, he went to Doncaster unbeaten in five starts and was sent off a red hot favourite, but he was beaten by Dunfermline – owned by HM The Queen and ridden by Willie Carson. That was Alleged’s only defeat and he later took his revenge in the Arc in Paris, a prize he also won the following year.

OTHER CLASSIC HEROES?

38

Premonition won the new York race in 1953, and became the first to go on to triumph in the St Leger. He was trained by Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and ridden by Harry Carr and they did it again five years later with Alcide. St Paddy, Hethersett, Ragusa and Indiana all did the double in a five year period during the 1960s, while Athens Wood and Bustino added to the score in the following decade. The mighty Reference Point took the Investec Derby as well as these two races in his fantastic career. Rule of Law carried the Godolphin blue to double victory in 2004 and Lucarno was another to do the double in 2007.

LEADING TRAINERS?

Paddy Prendergast saddled five winners in the early years of the race, while the late Sir Henry Cecil was successful on four occasions. These totals have been surpassed by Sir Michael Stoute - having won it seven times in his career including with Telescope in 2013. However, the master of Freemason Lodge is not represented in the race this year. John Gosden, who has won five of the last thirteen renewals, including last year’s, is chasing number six, courtesy of Darain. Aidan O’Brien has won it three Sir Michael Stoute times in the past 18 years, with Idaho doing the business in 2016 before unseating in incredibly unlucky fashion in the St Leger, while Kew Gardens took an eye-catching third here before winning the Doncaster Classic - Mogul is seeking to become the trainer’s fourth winner of the race.

LEADING RIDER? On the afternoon when sadly it only owners who can take a selfie with the statue of the “Long Fellow”, it is worth noting that Lester Piggott won the race on no less than nine occasions, while Frankie Dettori has the best record of the current crop of riders with seven victories to his credit. However, with Frankie out of the country, the gap will stay at two, so one-time winners William Buick and Ryan Moore will have the chance to double their tallies.

FARE?

Brioche was the first Yorkshiretrained winner when saddled for victory by Malton-based Captain Charles Elsey in 1957. But it was 45 years before we saw another Yorkshire horse score when Mark Johnston collected the prize with subsequent St Leger third, Bandari. Today’s carriers of the White Rose banner are Juan Elcano for Kevin Ryan and Subjectivist for Mark Johnston.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our third is a step up the Pattern pyramid, as a Group 2. It is run over a mile and a half and open only to the “classic generation” of three-year-old colts and geldings. Seen as a good indicator of a likely St Leger runner, there have been fourteen dual Knavesmire/Town Moor winners. The racecard tipster, Baron Ferdinand, has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

KNAVESMIRE TIP MOGUL had been threatening to become disappointing earlier in the season, but he was a respectable sixth in the Derby when the race fell apart before striking in Group 3 company at Goodwood last month. The Galileo colt is going the right way and might have too much knowhow for the unbeaten Darain. The latter is following the same path as stablemate Logician, who landed this before St Leger glory 12 months ago. Roberto Escobarr is unexposed and worth noting.

DOUBLING UP DOWN UNDER

Whilst Australia’s premier racecourse might be more than 10,500 miles from York, operating in a different hemisphere; the links between the Knavesmire and Flemington are actually very close. Not only do the teams at the two venues regularly share best practice but their signature contests are interwoven by the participants. As recently as last year, three thoroughbreds graced both the Sky Bet Ebor and the Lexus Melbourne Cup; with the Charlie Fellowes trained, Prince of Arran, being placed second in “the race that stops the nation” after a top ten finish at York.

Prince of Arran

What’s more, in three of the last four renewals of the Lexus Melbourne Cup the Sky Bet Ebor winner has made the top ten. Though the current Covid-19 crisis will add further to the challenge of doing the double in 2020, there have been a couple of near misses in recent times. Both Heartbreak City in 2016 and Purple Moon in 2007, headed down under as champions to find only one better in their bid for a famous double.

Heartbreak City (r)

Purple Moon (r)

The two courses offer valuable prize money and are widely regarded as a proper test of the racehorse, so it is not easy to land a major prize at either never mind, both. That honour so nearly went the way of Rekindling, who gave Joseph O’Brien a first major success in the Melbourne Cup of that November having been placed fourth in the Al Basti Equiworld Dante Stakes in the northern hemisphere in the May of 2017.

Cross Counter

FUN TIMES REMEMBERED As well as the star horses, the same sense of fun is shared by the occasions that host the feature races. Last year, York Racecourse was honoured to be the only European host to the Lexus Melbourne Cup on its charitable global tour. Over a memorable few days, the unique trophy was the star of numerous racegoers selfies as well as visiting racing yards and the East Yorkshire village that shares its name. Though for many followers on Social media, it was the appearance with the irrepressible Yorkshire Terriers that captured their hearts.

A year later and Cross Counter gave the Godolphin operation their first victory at Flemington, however the Charlie Appleby trailblazer had only managed a close up second on the Knavesmire in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur of that August. It had been the opposite way around for Max Dynamite in 2015, when the Ricci family owned gelding partnered Frankie Dettori into the York Winner’s Enclosure in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup, to just miss out in Australia, behind Prince of Penzance. In more than quarter of a century since Vintage Crop so memorably became the first European trained of Melbourne’s big race, only two other raiders have come home with the famous three-handled trophy. Whether any of this week’s champions will join that elite list, only time can tell, but York has certainly been an important part of the career of many who have already come close. FANTASY RAC S

THE JUDDMONTE INTERNATIONAL STAKES There is always a healthy debate in sport about comparisons over the generations, our fantasy race below is our contribution to the chatter.

1993 1994

EZZOUD (IRE)

1995 1996

HALLING (USA)

1989 B c Last Tycoon - Royal Sister II (Claude)

Owner: Maktoum Al Maktoum Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute Jockey: Walter Swinburn Breeder: T. J. Monaghan Ezzoud was not a straightforward ride but his three Group 1 victories speak for themselves. Two of those wins came in the Juddmonte International Stakes; in 1993 he cut down Sabrehill in the final furlong to win going away by a length and a half. In 1994 Ezzoud just prevailed by a neck in a memorable battle with Mahtaarram. He retired as joint top Rated Older Horse in Europe in 1994.

1991 Ch c Diesis - Dance Machine (Green Dancer (USA))

Owner: Godolphin Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor Breeder: Cyril Humphris Jockey: Walter Swinburn (95), Frankie Dettori (96) Described by his usual jockey Walter Swinburn as ‘the complete racehorse - the most versatile I have ever sat on’. He won the Juddmonte International Stakes (twice), the Coral Eclipse Stakes (twice) and the Prix d’Ispahan in what was a most impressive career. He retired in 1996 with the titles of Champion Older Horse in Europe for 1995 & 1996.

2000 GIANT’S CAUSEWAY (USA)

1997 Ch c Storm Cat (USA) - Mariah’s Storm (USA) (Rahy (USA))

Owner: Mrs John Magnier & M Tabor Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Mick Kinane Breeder: Orpendale & M Tabor Described as the ‘Iron Horse’ and the epitome of toughness and determination, Giant’s Causeway won six Group 1 races and almost without exception these victories were gained in nail-biting finishes. He won the Juddmonte International Stakes by a hard faught head in a superb race, having been headed by Kalanisi in the final furlong but responding in the gamest fashion to get back up on the line. The winner of the Coral Eclipse Stakes, St James Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes, and Irish Champion Stakes, Giant’s Causeway retired as Champion 3-year-old in Europe in 2000.

2007

AUTHORIZED (IRE)

B c Montjeu (IRE) - Funsie (FR)

Owner: Saleh Al Homeizi & Imid Al Sagar Jockey: Frankie Dettori

Trainer: Peter Chapple-Hyam Breeder: Marengo Investments & Knighton House Ltd & M. Kinane Brilliant winner of the Betfred Dante here, then the 2007 Derby, giving Frankie Dettori his first success in the Blue Riband, Authorized proved his class in York’s richest race. Starting as 6-4 favourtie, Authorized restored his reputation after defeat in the Coral Eclipse.

2009

SEA THE STARS (IRE)

B c Cape Cross (IRE) — Urban Sea (USA) (Miswaki (USA))

Owner: Christopher Tsui Trainer: John M Oxx Jockey: Mick Kinane Breeder: Sunderland Holdings A brilliant winner of the 2000 Guineas, the Investec Derby and the Coral-Eclipse, Sea The Stars won his fourth successive Group 1 with a record-breaking performance in the Juddmonte. Ridden by Mick Kinane, John Oxx’s charge set a new course record here on the Knavesmire. The warmth of his reception on coming back to the Winner’s Enclosure completed a “were you at York the day when…” memory. The colt went on to complete an unbeaten Classic season with further victories in the Irish Champion Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

2012

FRANKEL

B c Galileo (IRE) - Kind (IRE) (Danehill (USA))

Owner: Prince Khalid Abdulla Trainer: Sir Henry Cecil Jockey: Tom Queally Breeder: Juddmonte Farms Ltd Few horses have better race records than Frankel, who retired unbeaten in fourteen starts at the end of the 2012 flat season. Having landed numerous Group 1 victories including the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, Lockinge and two renewals of the Sussex Stakes, his greatest hour probably came here on the Knavesmire. The opposition was filled with top level performers such as St Nicholas Abbey and Farhh, but it proved no problem as the four-year-old scooted clear of his rivals to win in devastating fashion by seven lengths.

2014

AUSTRALIA

ch c Galileo (IRE) - Ouija Board (Cape Cross (IRE))

Owner: D Smith/Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/T Ah Khing Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Joseph O’Brien Breeder: Stanley Estate And Stud Co Having run well to finish third from an unfavourable draw in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, Australia was to prove an emphatic Derby winner the following month. Further Classic success followed three weeks later in the Irish Derby before he secured a third straight Group 1 victory here - beating French Derby winner The Grey Gatsby in the process.

The Juddmonte International

FACT FILE: WHEN DID THE RACE BEGIN? RECORD TIME? The record time came in 2009 when Sea The Stars completed the 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 88 yards (2,092 metres) course in 2 minutes 5.29 seconds.

Sea The Stars

Distance One mile and two furlongs (2,000 metres)

Prize money £275,000

The Juddmonte International was devised by Major Leslie Petch, a former Clerk of the Course at York but he had stepped down from his position due to ill health before the inaugural race was staged.

IS IT AN INTERNATIONAL RACE?

Oh yes - it certainly lives up to its international billing. Thirteen of the 45 renewals have been won by horses trained overseas. Ireland leads the way with 9 victories followed by France with 3 and Italy with 1. Maurice Zilber, the trainer of the 1974 & 1975 winner Dahlia, was born and raised in Cairo where he trained horses from 1946 to 1962 before moving to Chantilly where he worked for further 43 years. In a the thrilling renewal of 2005, Japanese trained ace, Zenno Rob Roy, finished a close second to subsequent Dubai World Cup winner, Electrocutionist, a colt trained in Italy.

IS AGE IMPORTANT?

Since the Juddmonte International was first run in 1972 it has been won by 17 three-year-olds, 21 four-year-olds, 9 five-year-olds and only 1 six-year-old, so the stats, if not the betting market, are in favour of three-year-olds Kameko & Rose Of Kildare and four-year-old, Lord North.

FIRST WINNER?

The inaugural running of the Juddmonte International in 1972 produced a contest that has gone down in racing legend. Brigadier Gerard was to suffer his only defeat in 18 career starts when headed by that year’s Derby winner, Roberto.

THE LUCK OF THE O’BRIENS? The very first renewal was won by the Vincent O’Brien-trained Roberto and the great man added a second in 1983 with Caerleon, a year after David O’Brien won the race with Assert. After a barren spell Aidan O’Brien got them back on track when Giant’s Causeway won in 2000; the first of his six winners - Duke Of Marmalade, Rip Van Winkle, Declaration Of War, Australia and last year’s winner, Japan. John Oxx’s Sea The Stars added to Irish success in the race having won in 2009. The Ballydoyle baton this afternoon is carried by Magical. 48

LEADING TRAINERS?

Sir Michael Stoute

The most successful trainers in the history of the Juddmonte International are Sir Michael Stoute, who has won the race six times courtesy of Shardari (1986), Ezzoud (1993 & 1994), Singspiel (1997), Notnowcato (2006) and Ulysses (2017), and Aidan O’Brien (winners on previous page) who recorded his sixth win with Japan last year. The former isn’t represented in the race this afternoon, so could Magical help the master Irish trainer to take the lead?

LEADING RIDER? The most successful jockeys in the history of the Juddmonte International are Lester Piggott and Frankie Dettori who have both won the race five times. Piggott tasted success with Dahlia (1974 & 1975), Hawaiian Sound (1978), Commanche Run (1985) and Rodrigo de Triano (1992) whilst Dettori’s victories came courtesy of Halling (1996), Singspiel (1997), Sakhee (2001), Sulamani (2004) and Authorized (2007). However, with Frankie in France, the likes of Ryan Moore and Oisin Murphy have the chance to score their second success in the race.

ANY DUAL WINNERS?

The most successful horses in the history of the Juddmonte International are Dahlia (1974 & 1975), Ezzoud (1993 & 1994) and Halling (1995 & 1996).

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Established in 1977, Juddmonte Farms, owned by Prince Khalid bin Abdullah, consists of three stud farms in England, two in Ireland, and three in Kentucky, USA.

Lester Piggott

ANY OTHER INTERESTING FACTS?

The shortest-priced winner of the Juddmonte International was the legendary Frankel who blitzed his rivals in 2012 when sent off at 1/10. In victory he set a new record for winning eight European Group 1 races in a row.

In 2008 an unbelievably wet summer resulted in the Ebor Festival being abandoned. The Juddmonte International was re-routed to Newmarket, the only time the race has been staged away from York. The rescheduled race was won by Duke Of Marmalade.

The Prince won back-to-back renewals of this race in 2011 & 2012 with Twice Over & Frankel. This afternoon marks the thirty-second time the race has enjoyed their generous support.

AGE The victory of Japan twelve months ago saw the three-year-olds draw level with their four-year-old rivals to a score of 4-4 in the last decade, with the remaining two winners being five (Postponed, 2016) and six years of age (Twice Over, 2011). However, despite three-year-olds taking four of the last six renewals, if we go further back, the record of the four-year-olds is far superior to any other age group, with 21 wins from 47 renewals. The four-year-olds are represented by Lord North this afternoon. DISTANCE Only the great Frankel in 2012, 2018's winner Roaring Lion and Rodrigo de Triano in 1992, have successfully managed to step up in trip to a mile and a quarter to win the Juddmonte International. In 2013, Declaration Of War stepped up from winning over a mile at Ascot but had already proved himself more than capable over 10 furlongs earlier in his career, whilst Arabian Queen had finished third in the Nassau Stakes over ten furlongs prior to winning here. PROVEN AT THE TOP LEVEL Unsurprisingly for a race of this quality, the last ten renewals have been dominated by regular Group 1 performers, with only 2011’s victor Twice Over having not contested a top level race on his most recent outing. If we look a bit closer at that statistic, it shows us that six of the last ten winners had finished no worse than second in a Group 1 last time out.

RECENT FORM Following on from the above, it's been a good tactic to oppose any runners without a victory to their name this season, regardless of whether they ran well in defeat. Only Sulamani in 2004 and Roaring Lion in 2018 have won the Juddmonte International in recent seasons having not won a race earlier in the calendar – fortunately for those running today, they have all been successful in 2020. TRAINERS Sir Michael Stoute is the joint-most successful trainer in the race’s history with six victories but isn't represented this time around. So Aidan O’Brien will be hoping to move ahead with Magical carrying his banner this afternoon. BETTING Arabian Queen’s victory at odds of 50/1 in 2015 certainly put a cat amongst the pigeons but on the whole, the Juddmonte International isn’t really a race for shocks. Prior to that you have to go back to Ezzoud’s success at 28/1 way back in 1993 to find the only other big-priced winner to really stand out. Favourites have a decent record here having won four of the last ten renewals, while all bar one of the last ten have been priced in single figures, so it would seem prudent to focus on those towards the head of the bookmakers’ boards. KEY TRENDS Placed or better in Group 1 last time Trained by Aidan O’Brien or Sir Michael Stoute Horses aged four or younger

CONCLUSION Three or four-year-olds have held sway in this race for some time and perhaps it will pay to focus on the stand-outs in those age groups, KAMEKO and Lord North. The former won the QIPCO 2000 Guineas before finishing fourth in the Derby over 1m4f and an unlucky fourth in the Sussex Stakes over 1m, so this 1m2f trip could well prove to be his optimum and the perfect opportunity to resume his progress to the very top. Lord North has improved chunks this year and his Prince of Wales's Stakes victory was extremely impressive, but he gives plenty of weight to the three-year-old here and that could make a big difference. Ghaiyyath, conqueror of Enable in the Eclipse, clearly must be respected as one of the best horses at this trip in Europe, while Magical is Aidan O'Brien's only representative from a wide choice of superstars, so is another with claims in a fantastic race. Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. All trends are ten year based unless stated. 50

THE JUDDMONTE INTERNATIONAL

KNAVESMIRE TIP A fantastic renewal with some of the top 10-furlong horses around involved. Lord North won the Prince Of Wales's in fine style at Royal Ascot, while Ghaiyyath beat Lord North's superstar stablemate Enable in the Coral-Eclipse and will no doubt make a bold bid from the front. Magical is another front runner who has been farming top-level races of late, but slight preference is for KAMEKO. Andrew Balding's 2000 Guineas winner shaped as though this trip would suit when unlucky in running at Goodwood last time and he can continue the excellent record of three-year-olds, who have won four of the last six renewals of this.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our second competitive handicap, your vital statistics are 3-y-o+, rated 0-105, going two miles. The high handicap rating band means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for the behind-closed-doors Test cricketers, a score of over 100 denotes a top performer). Volcanic Sky will carry the most weight today. So, pit your wits against the handicapper – as clues, look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, noting Here and Now is one to carry both.

KNAVESMIRE TIP ROCHESTER HOUSE ran a big race in a competitive stayers' handicap at Glorious Goodwood and could gain compensation for that near-miss behind Just Hubert (with True Destiny back in sixth) now dropping back in trip. Here And Now (2018) and Eddystone Rock (2019) are past winners of this contest who command respect, though bigger dangers may be Monsieur Lambrays, who won very cosily over track and trip latest, and Make My Day, who struck over 1m4f here on his first run for Ralph Beckett and could improve for this stiffer test.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Dancin Inthestreet proved disappointing here last month but she was previously third in two competitive handicaps at Newmarket and Ascot, including behind Art Power at the latter venue, and could bounce back for William Haggas now returned to the minimum trip. Pink Sands is progressing nicely and is worth noting wearing first-time cheekpieces, but KEEP BUSY is preferred. John Quinn's filly returned to form over 5f when beating El Astronaute at Hamilton recently and Danny Redmond's 5lb claim should really help her.

The field in the Juddmonte International demonstrate the global nature of top class flat racing competition. To further encourage this competition the Japanese Racing Association have offered an attractive incentive to the winner of the Juddmonte International. If the successful horse this afternoon also wins the Japan Cup on Sunday November Suave Richard wins the 2019 Japan Cup 29th then connections will qualify for a special bonus valued US$3,000,000. Understandably, any travel and quarantine restrictions issued in response to the pandemic will need to be observed. Will this afternoon’s winner follow Suave Richard and Oisin Murphy to take the honours in Tokyo this autumn?

RACE DESCRIPTION Getting the hang of handicaps? This time it’s two-year-olds only, going three quarters of a mile in distance. By this stage of the afternoon some will have resorted to their choice of “ps”; with the pin in 2-y-o nursery handicaps, even the richest one in the land, having a fair record. Pedigree is the second, more professional “p”. Good luck in picking a winner with the knowledge that victory in this race means you can remain unbeaten until at least 1.47pm tomorrow!

KNAVESMIRE TIP Mark Johnston boasts a strong hand with MUTAZAWWED, a winner at Lingfield in June, and Toussarok, who ran with plenty of credit when giving a penalty away at Ayr last month. Preference is for the former as he was unlucky when runner-up at Hamilton at the start of the month and the son of Muhaarar can handle a 4lb rise for that effort. Line Of Departure, Cairn Island and Churchill Bay are all open to further improvement based on what they have achieved to date.

The two men, their mounts and the years you needed were: Pat Eddery – Beldale Flutter (1981), Asset (1982) & Caerleon (1983), and Walter Swinburn – Ezzoud (1993, 1994) & Halling (1995). 2. Phoenix Of Spain took the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh and Rule of Law was the classic-winning horse in question - he was the winner of the 2004 St Leger. 3. Lucarno was the last horse before Logician to do the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur-St Leger double back in 2007 - coincidentally, he was also trained by John Gosden.
