Ridden to its limit, no other production bike could come close. The Cam Shaft One (CS1) was Norton’s first-ever overhead cam engine, replacing the influential overhead valve ‘model 18’ at the top of their range and becoming the basis for all their racing efforts. It was designed by Walter Moore, who had been brought into Norton to take over from the ailing James Norton. Mr Moore knew that the way to secure more power was through higher RPMs and that overhead cams were the answer. Blueprinted in 1926, the engine was first used at the Isle of Man TT in 1927. The engine had never been tested before, let alone raced; however, Mr Moore’s faith in his design saw him rushing two fresh CS1 motors to the island and having to hire a tugboat to get himself there overnight through treacherous winter waters. Once landed, Mr Moore faced the challenge of convincing his mechanic team and pilot (Alec Bennett) to fit and race the new power plant the very next morning. By the end of the next day, Alec Bennett and the CS1 had rewritten the history books winning the Senior TT by over eight minutes – a remarkable result by anyone’s standards! The CS1 is also famous for being the victim of corporate politics. By 1928, the machine had been commissioned for production and that is why we are able to offer one here. However, Walter Moore wanted a seat on the board of Norton but was blocked with the result that he ‘defected’ to Germany where he worked for NSU. To add insult to injury, Walter Moore could prove that his CS1 design had been produced outside his working hours which allowed him to take his design with him. In 1929, NSU brought out their own version and so Norton produced the infamous low-slung CS1 for only one season. This rare landmark Norton is one of the most sought-after of all racing machines.

Further entries now invited Illustrated: A Magnificent Presentation Sword Sheathed in 21ct Gold, Enhanced with Pearls. This is the famous sword presented by the Emir of Bahrain to the late David Lange whilst Prime Minister in 1985. Considerable controversy surrounded its original sale by Wellington auction house Dunbar Sloane, both in terms of the diplomatic appropriateness of the sale and the failure, at the time, to recognise its true worth (it was sold as plated for $550). Subsequently marketed and sold by Webb’s in 2000, it realised $38,000. The buyer, a prominent NZ citizen, has now decided to simplify his extensive collection and has instructed us to offer it again to the market. Given that the scabbard and hilt contain the best part of a kilo of gold, we anticipate that it will sell in the region of $40,000 – $50,000 Splendid Sapphire & Diamond Jewellery from a significant Auckland Estate. The necklace, bracelet, cluster ring and matching earrings, all to be sold separately, will be a feature of the April offering.

webb’s new kids on the block Simon Ward and Francis McWhannell Webb’s is pleased to announce the appointment of two new members of staff with Simon Ward as the Director of the Fine Wine Division and Francis McWhannell as the Head of Bethunes Rare Book Department. Although new to the auction business, Simon has worked in the wine industry both locally and internationally for a number of years, holding prominent positions with Empson & Co. in Italy and Te Awa winery in New Zealand. Initially working in production before moving to sales and marketing and then winery management, Simon has experience of more than 20 years in the wine industry which is a valuable asset to Webb’s auction house. A true bibliophile, Francis has an interest in rare books with a particular passion for New Zealand, literary and fine press publications. He has substantial experience in the new and second-hand book trades and is currently constructing a new 21st-century sale and acquisition service for Bethunes. Their upcoming sales, with Wine on 24 February and Bethunes on 25 March, provide great opportunities to meet Simon and Francis and to discuss their new ideas and the direction for each department. The highlights from both sales will be available for viewing on our website, www.webbs.co.nz

Wrist & pocket wATCHES Important Conditions Sale for Watches: Please note: as many of the timepieces are old, or their history is unknown, Webb’s offers no guarantee as to mechanical condition or condition of seals etc. A timepiece described as ‘fine’ or ‘as new’ is an opinion as to appearance only. All watches are sold as viewed. It shall be assumed that all buyers have inspected the lots and that they are happy with them in all respects. Watches cannot be returned on the grounds that repairs or service have been carried out, or parts (including straps or bracelets) have been supplied, by anyone other than the named maker. Notwithstanding the foregoing condition, named wristwatches are sold on the basis that the movement (or movement and case where both would normally have been manufactured by the named maker) were manufactured by the named maker. It is recommended that buyers have watches serviced promptly to ensure that damage does not arise from faulty seals or any other aspect of mechanical condition. 410 TECHNOMARINE, A Lady’s Chronograph

FINE JEWELLERY, Loose diamonds Independent Gemmological Reports And Valuations: Valuations are made available to customers for two primary purposes: Firstly to provide an independent opinion as to the quality of the stones & metals comprising the piece, and Secondly so that buyers can, if they wish, obtain suitable Insurance cover immediately upon purchase and prior to delivery. A valuation for insurance purposes represents a calculated replacement cost allowing for maximum retail margins, such that an Insurer can assess the outer limit of their exposure to risk. It does not represent actual new retail replacement as it makes no provision for competitive trade practice, or for discounts obtained by individual bargaining. As fashion, desirability and current market forces all have variable impact on second hand or Auction value, there is no direct formula for estimation of such value by interpolation from Insurable value.

As the currency exchange rate and spot metal prices have a marked effect on jewellery valuations, buyers should note the date and prevailing economic factors at the time that the valuation was produced. Once all of the prevailing parameters have been established, it is possible for an experienced person to interpolate a rough estimate of the current cost of manufacture from past insurable value, but again that exercise will give no indication of actual market forces. Buyers should also note the stated purpose of the valuation (Insurance, Retail Market, Cash Value, Estate Division etc.). All valuations remain opinions and not matters of fact.

Whilst Webb’s staff will assist buyers to understand the methodology and technical details of Gemmological reports and valuations, buyers must make their own assessment of an item’s value before bidding. Webb’s its consultants and employees make no representation or warranty regarding any outside opinion, valuation or certificate of any item on offer.

Please note: where gemological reports are available these should be read together with the catalogue description. Should there be, through error, omission or introduction of better evidence, any significant difference between the catalogued description and that provided in the gemologist’s report, it shall be assumed that the buyer has inspected the report and is buying in acceptance of it. Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been assessed for weight, colour or clarity mounted and the descriptions given in the catalogue or report are therefore based on estimates which are limited in accuracy. Where an actual weight is given the stone will have been weighed loose, however while the grading of a stone loose will minimise error margins it shall be accepted by the buyer that all reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact.
