important works of art Webb’s is pleased to be offering works from the collection of Las Vegas-based philanthropist Glenn Schaeffer. Focusing primarily on contemporary practice, his collection places major works and site-specif ic commissions by New Zealanders such as Milan Mrkusich, John Reynolds, Stephen Bambury, Julian Dashper, Geoff Thornley, Jim Speers and Shane Cotton alongside international pieces by Ellsworth Kelly, Ed Ruscha, Donald Judd, John McCracken, Bridget Riley and Richard Long. The highly prestigious collection is now undergoing a period of rejuvenation and it is with considerable pleasure that Webb’s offers to the market some of its works.

Better known in New Zealand within the fine art, literature and business contexts, he is the founder and primary benefactor of the Victoria University International Institute of Modern Letters. The Institute’s Prize in Modern Letters, the richest literary prize in the world at $65,000, is awarded biennially, acknowledging and advancing the work of emerging writers from, or based in, New Zealand. Schaeffer is an art collector of note in his native America, while here in New Zealand he has been compiling one of New Zealand’s most significant private collections. It is often said that once an art buyer can no longer display all of the paintings they own, they have become a collector. They continue to acquire works when the physical space they have cannot accommodate them; they are no longer content with filling the walls as the desire to acquire persists. This theory would suggest that, for some, there is an unconscious element in the approach to collecting. It is the initial purchase that may be the first step: an artwork bought, an artist’s career followed. Next, a piece acquired for certain reasons no longer fits into the ideas that the collection has developed. The collection often grows and changes along with the discretionary spending of the collector: works on paper and prints graduate to paintings, small works to large works, and domestically scaled sculpture to large-scale site-specific pieces. Regardless of the course the collection takes, there may come a time when storage or the care of the artworks becomes a liability rather than a pleasure. Most significant art collections experience regeneration at some time. In public galleries deaccessioning must follow the International Council of Museums (ICOM) Code of Ethics which states that: “Money or compensation received from the deaccessioning and disposal of objects… should be used solely for the benefit of the collection and usually for acquisitions to that same collection”. Private collections are not normally beholden to such a set of rigid rules but in releasing works from this collection, Schaeffer will adhere to the ICOM principles. As explained in a statement from his collection management:

“The Glenn Schaeffer New Zealand art collection is to be revitalised to reflect its evolving appreciation of contemporary art and an energy and enthusiasm for further collecting. Over the next five years, the collection will undergo a comprehensive rejuvenation with the acquisition of a rich and idiosyncratic assortment of works by established and emerging artists.” The release of works and their inclusion in this catalogue affords other collectors the opportunity to acquire pieces from this prestigious collection. Webb’s has been entrusted with the deaccession of several important works within a broad range of practice including Nahash by Shane Cotton (Lot 47), Tony de Lautour’s Heart, Diamond, Club, Spade (Lot 49) and Ralph Hotere’s Black Painting No. 39 (Lot 44). The scale of some of the works is epic. Don Driver’s Ground Nut (Lot 36) and Shane Cotton’s Nahash, at four metres and close to three metres long respectively, require substantial walls on which to house them. A Tony de Lautour Heart, Diamond, Club, Spade four-part work comes in at just over four metres square and a quatrefoil by Max Gimblett Spine (Lot 42) spans over three metres in diameter. This work is the sister painting to the work currently on view at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Further highlights in the March Sale include works at the other end of the spectrum such as three exquisite smallscale Shane Cotton paintings: Untitled (Lot 2) from 1994, which encompasses some of the best-loved imagery from that period, a single tree on a sepia-toned unstretched canvas, and Maungatoroto (Lot 33) a text-based work. The early Richard Killeen Stack Months and Days (Lot 29) is on a shaped gesso wood panel. This large construction formerly graced the foyer of the National Bank in Queen Street but a renovation project has meant a changing of the guard. Several works by Colin McCahon from the ’50s and ’60s include a Waterfall (Lot 27), which was once owned by the art historian Bernard Smith. It is thought that it was the first McCahon to enter an Australian collection. The work was then sold through Sotheby’s in Melbourne in 1989, its sale aiding the funding for an endowment from that preeminent art historian of the period. EMMA FOX

antiques & decorative arts There couldn’t be a better time to be considering investing in antique sterling silver. Running in opposition to the fall of money markets and equities, precious metals have been enjoying record highs. Antique silver is one of today’s preferred investment choices, no longer in the preserve of the wealthy and well within the reach of the majority of today’s collectors: quality pieces are enjoying a renaissance.

A compact but excellent selection of Georgian period (1714 – 1830) sterling silver is included in this catalogue. Notable amongst the pieces on offer are: a pair of Neoclassical candlesticks by Geo. Ashforth & Co, 1791 (Lot 520); an excellent and substantial entrée dish by Benj. and Jas. Smith, 1811 (Lot 530); a pierced bread basket by Robert Hennell, 1826 (Lot 521 ); a set of four pierced, octagonal, oblong salts by William Abdy (Lot 526) (illustrated left); and a Dundee silver soup ladle by William Scott 1776 (Lot 534). This catalogue also includes an example of the work of Dr Christopher Dresser (1834 – 1904) (illustrated on left page). Among the first independent industrial designers, Christopher Dresser championed design reform in 19th - century Britain while embracing modern manufacturing in the development of wallpaper, textiles, ceramics, glass, furniture and metal ware. His design forms were radical against a backdrop of the Victorian aesthetic. In about 1878, Dresser was appointed art adviser to the manufacturing silversmith and electroplating firm Hukin & Heath and amongst his designs produced for the company was the electroplated claret jug (Lot 565). For collectors of New Zealand jewellery, this catalogue includes pieces by 1950s designer Patoni including unusual brooches, one in the form of a dragon (Lot 421) and the other in the form of a phoenix bird (Lot 420). Entries are now invited for the next sale of decorative arts to be held on 2 April 2009.

Opening evening: Wednesday 15 April 2009 6.00pm - 8.00pm Champagne cocktails will be served. Viewing: Thursday 16 April 2009 Friday 17 April 2009 Saturday 18 April 2009 Sunday 19 April 2009

9.00am - 5.30pm 9.00am - 5.30pm 10.00am - 4.00pm 9.00am - 11.00am (limited viewing)

The catalogue with estimates and illustrations will be available at www.webbs.co.nz on 20 March. A printed list will be available at the viewing. Intending buyers will be able to try on the garments. The archive includes over 200 garments: timeless and glamorous evening gowns, cocktail wear and dance dresses in beading, sequins, brocades, tulles and silks. Fabrics are of exceptional quality, many from renowned Swiss fabric houses such as Jakob Schlaepfer. Also featured are 200 retro, day and evening-wear garments from the ‘60s to the ‘80s and a large offering of designer wedding dresses, cocktail hats and accessories together with three original costumes from Miss New Zealand Contests.

WINE AUCTION Monday 30 March 2008, 6.30pm The auction will feature a large selection of premium New Zealand and International wines. Of special note is a stunning vertical of Penfolds Grange with vintages from 1973 to 2000 and a great selection of French wines by the case and by the bottle. Chateau Margaux 1985 RMP Jr 94/100 While not as powerful and concentrated as some vintages, the 1985 Margaux is more charming and, at present, more complex than those backward vintages. Rich, expansive and velvety textured, this wine has developed more length and more flavour dimensions. Anticipated maturity: Now to 2010. $900 - $1,100 Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz The reputation and track record of Penfolds Grange on the secondary market rivals some of the great classified growths of Bordeaux and Burgundy. It is widely considered Australia’s ‘first growth’ and its most collectable wine. $200 - $800 per bottle (depending on vintage) Full catalogue available free of charge upon request and listed at www.webbs.co.nz. The auction is to be held concurrent with the Fine Art Sale and will be conducted in the Annex Gallery. Northland oil on canvas, signed and dated 11.9.62 860mm x 830mm Reference: Colin McCahon Database (www.mccahon.co.nz) #CM000635

$80,000 - $100,000

The present painting belongs to the Northland series that McCahon started in the late 1950s following his trip to America when he was “just bursting for the wide open spaces”. Although the scale of the work is rather modest, it nevertheless extends beyond the picture plane as the severely cropped forms expand and continue into the blackness beyond the edge of the frame. The work comprises three golden yellow forms that shimmer against a dark ground, conjuring up feelings of the earth and sun or indeed the moon seen from black space. They are also reduced and simplified echoes of the undulating landscape of the North Island and function in most of McCahon’s work from 1961 and 1962 as archetypal symbols of Northland. The painting appears to be a snapshot of the passing landscape, raw and unhindered, as if captured out of the corner of the artist’s eye while he was travelling through it, and subsequently spilt onto the canvas. On a more formalist level, these three sparse, distilled humps provide an element of depth to the painting, which could easily have been flat and lifeless. The textured brushwork adds volume to the compact forms while the reduced palette allows for a tension to arise between light and dark so that the landscape structures both recede and come forward. Black Painting No. 39 lacquer on board, title inscribed, signed and dated ‘69 verso 900mm x 900mm

$85,000 - $100,000

Hotere’s tenebrous surface simply glistens with measured precision. Thin, crisp lines in yellow-green, blue and milky grey skim over the inky surface of the painting and form a series of concentric circles. The work holds obvious parallels with the seminal Black Paintings by Ad Reinhardt from 1956 to 1966 with its focus on the black field that is completely devoid of any traces of the artist’s hand. However, unlike Reinhardt who had insisted on matt surfaces in order that the world could not impose itself on his paintings through reflection, Hotere’s sumptuous glossy surface draws attention to itself and its material presence. Adding to this insistence on materiality is the use of the circle which Francis Pound has suggested Hotere used as he was “attracted to the absolutist nature of the circle as form… or the history of the circle as a metaphor for God, or the universe.” Whatever the possible implications and meanings of Hotere’s choice of shape and palette, in terms of pure aesthetics, Black Painting No.39 is undeniably enchanting with its flawless lustre combined with rippling circles that radiate towards the edges. $180,000 - $220,000

From late 1956, Colin McCahon’s work began to focus on the landscape of French Bay, simplifying the relationship between the land, harbour, horizon line and sky. Many of the paintings from this period/series, including the present work from 1958, are dominated by strong horizontal bands that are juxtaposed with short, punchy vertical blocks. Like McCahon’s later painting, Northland, which is also in this sale (see lot 39), the segments of light colour laid on a dark ground work to create a spatial illusion whereby elements of the picture plane appear to move backwards and forwards in undefined space. In Black White French Bay, the sky and horizon are reduced to strips of colour, coarsely brushed so that the edges skim, only thinly, over the dark ground and do not wholly obscure it. As a result, these areas of the canvas seem to radiate an internal light and imbue the painting with a sense of tranquillity. Adding to this feeling of calm is the reduced palette, which is made up of shades of blue and grey-white. The restricted colours and invocation of light underscore a key point of transition between the early and late works of the French Bay series when McCahon’s attitude to the landscape shifted and he began to use colour as a means of describing atmospheric light effects, while his forms became increasingly simplified and fragmented. McCahon himself described his later works from the French Bay series as being painted in his “impressionistic style”, a term that is telling in that it highlights McCahon’s preoccupation with the effects of light on both landscape and water. In this manner, his works are more closely aligned with the theories of the French Impressionists such as Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro rather than the beliefs of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque regarding the reduction and simplification of form. A central tenet of On the Nature of Art, McCahon and John Caselberg’s unpublished manifesto from 1953, was “to paint is to contrast”, which continued as a fundamental concept in McCahon’s art practice of the late 1950s. As well as transcribing the atmospheric effect of sunlight dancing and refracting off the ocean, the soft, radiant light of Black White French Bay is also an example of McCahon’s use of light as a metaphor for spiritual enlightenment, which pervades a large portion of his oeuvre. Nahash oil on canvas, title inscribed, signed with initials SWC and dated 2003 and 2004 1900mm x 3000mm

$100,000 - $150,000

Rich in symbolism that is personal, historic and mythological, Cotton’s sizeable work Nahash is both visually arresting and deeply complex. In a manner typical of Cotton, the work holds a multitude of possible interpretations, none of which is fixed or dominant. The title of the piece is a case in point and is likely to be a combination of names from biblical scriptures and time-honoured custom of Cotton’s iwi, Ngapuhi. Thus, the title could be seen as a reference to Nahash, King of the Ammonites, who reigned in the biblical time of King Saul. On the other hand, in several Semitic languages, Nahash translates as ‘serpent’ and also features in Maori mythology that is directly connected to Ngapuhi. As Lara Strongman relates “their familiar spirit was known as Te Nakahi, a transliteration of the Hebrew ‘Nanash’, referring to the serpent of the Garden of Eden… Te Nakahi was a creature positioned somewhere between the biblical serpent of Genesis and the eel guardians of the Ngapuhi people.” Further reinforcing this connection are the two large coiled snakes, painted in Cotton’s characteristic orange and green hues that occur on the lower half of the canvas. Suspended in black space, the serpentine forms writhe below a patterned cloud of orange, green, red and pink camouflage that swirls through the centre of the painting. These elements are joined by an amalgamation of Cotton’s signature motifs including the floating head, coloured bull’s-eyes and the presence of New Zealand native birds, in this case the fantail. The remainder of the black ground of Nahash is dotted with a series of little white capital letters, some plain against the black and some held within bubbles of colour. These stream across the work in horizontal bands like trails of stars and do much to anchor and define the tangible surface of the work so that the objects are not lost within it. Cotton started using the black background in his works at the turn of the millennium in what many art historians have seen as a nod to Ralph Hotere. In Cotton’s hands, the fields of black come to be sombre environments that contain veils of cultural and religious references that span a wide expanse of time. JEMMA FIELD

6.00PM Wrist & pocket wATCHES Important Conditions Sale for Watches: Please note: as many of the timepieces are old, or their history is unknown, Webb’s offers no guarantee as to mechanical condition or condition of seals etc. A timepiece described as ‘fine’ or ‘as new’ is an opinion as to appearance only. All watches are sold as viewed. It shall be assumed that all buyers have inspected the lots and that they are happy with them in all respects. Watches cannot be returned on the grounds that repairs or service have been carried out, or parts (including straps or bracelets) have been supplied, by anyone other than the named maker. Notwithstanding the foregoing condition, named wristwatches are sold on the basis that the movement (or movement and case where both would normally have been manufactured by the named maker) were manufactured by the named maker. It is recommended that buyers have watches serviced promptly to ensure that damage does not arise from faulty seals or any other aspect of mechanical condition. 200 ROLEX, A Gentleman’s Tudor Oyster Wristwatch.

gold presentation sword 226 A Magnificent Gold Presentation Sword.

The blade of Kiliji style in steel with engraved Arabic inscriptions; the guard, grip and scabbard sheathed in 21ct yellow gold richly decorated with chased and bright cut hand worked floral and geometric motifs. The scabbard enhanced with ten clusters of four natural pearls. The tip of the scabbard stamped with fineness 875 (21ct). The inscription may be translated as “Made in Bahrain to the order of (His Majesty) Sheikh Isa Bin Sulman Al-Khalifa, Emir of Bahrain, AD 1985, AH 1405”. The sword comes with a fitted red baize case. History: The sword was presented to the late Prime Minister Dave Lange in September 1985 by the Emir at the conclusion of his state visit to New Zealand. We understand that Mr Lange’s wife, Margaret Pope, took the sword to a major Wellington company specialising in the sale of gold, silver and jewellery for evaluation. Their opinion that the sheathing was gold plate (despite very clear markings to the contrary, which they presumably overlooked) and that the sword was therefore worth less than the threshold defining personal or State gifts, led her to instruct Wellington auction house Dunbar Sloane to sell it. Dunbar Sloane acting in good faith, and understandably relying on the expert opinion, sold the sword in 1991 for $550. The sale of the sword raised a storm of controversy that centred upon the appropriateness of Mr Lange’s action in selling it, the possibility of an insult to the Emir, and the resulting strain that might be brought to relations between New Zealand and the Emirate. A similar sword given to the Governor General, Sir David Beattie, by the Emir was placed in the Canterbury Museum, where we understand that it is insured for $100,000. The buyer of the sword was John Barlow, a collector/dealer who later gained notoriety as the convicted murderer of two Wellington businessmen. As a result of the costs of his unsuccessful defence, Barlow’s wife re-offered the sword (along with other collectibles and antiques) in late 1994. It failed to reach reserve, but was subsequently bought by private treaty by Wellington Regional Councillor Rick Long and broadcast personality Paul Henry. In September 2000 Webb’s offered the sword for sale with the correct description and history as above. It was sold for $38,000 to a prominent Auckland businessman, collector and Knight of the realm. The buyer, having decided to simplify his extensive collection, has instructed us to offer it again to the market. The extraordinary opulence of the piece, its fascinating history, and simple intrinsic value (given that the overall weight of the piece is some 1610g, inclusive of blade and some wooden scabbard lining), coupled with a recent record rise in the price of gold should see interest from investors and collectors alike. $40,000-50,000 see colour illustration page 63

FINE JEWELLERY Independent Gemmological Reports And Valuations: Valuations are made available to customers for two primary purposes: Firstly to provide an independent opinion as to the quality of the stones & metals comprising the piece, and Secondly so that buyers can, if they wish, obtain suitable Insurance cover immediately upon purchase and prior to delivery. A valuation for insurance purposes represents a calculated replacement cost allowing for maximum retail margins, such that an Insurer can assess the outer limit of their exposure to risk. It does not represent actual new retail replacement as it makes no provision for competitive trade practice, or for discounts obtained by individual bargaining. As fashion, desirability and current market forces all have variable impact on second hand or Auction value, there is no direct formula for estimation of such value by interpolation from Insurable value. As the currency exchange rate and spot metal prices have a marked effect on jewellery valuations, buyers should note the date and prevailing economic factors at the time that the valuation was produced. Once all of the prevailing parameters have been established, it is possible for an experienced person to interpolate a rough estimate of the current cost of manufacture from past insurable value, but again that exercise will give no indication of actual market forces. Buyers should also note the stated purpose of the valuation (Insurance, Retail Market, Cash Value, Estate Division etc.). All valuations remain opinions and not matters of fact. Whilst Webb’s staff will assist buyers to understand the methodology and technical details of Gemmological reports and valuations, buyers must make their own assessment of an item’s value before bidding. Webb’s its consultants and employees make no representation or warranty regarding any outside opinion, valuation or certificate of any item on offer.

Please note: where gemological reports are available these should be read together with the catalogue description. Should there be, through error, omission or introduction of better evidence, any significant difference between the catalogued description and that provided in the gemologist’s report, it shall be assumed that the buyer has inspected the report and is buying in acceptance of it. Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been assessed for weight, colour or clarity mounted and the descriptions given in the catalogue or report are therefore based on estimates which are limited in accuracy. Where an actual weight is given the stone will have been weighed loose, however while the grading of a stone loose will minimise error margins it shall be accepted by the buyer that all reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact.
