Highlights Important Paintings & Contemporary Art, March 2012 With a sale total well in excess of $1 million, the results achieved at our first sale of Important Paintings and Contemporary Art for 2012 confirm that demand at the top end of the market remains consistent, with strong prices achieved for many of the higher-value works on offer.
The landmark offering of three major works by Philip Clairmont was met with a high level of interest from collectors: In Homage to Vincent, a self-portrait, achieved $24,600, Untitled (Still Life) achieved $37,200 and Inocence Threatened (sic), a large-scale diptych painted when the artist was just 21
years old, achieved $43,000. Further, Colin McCahon’s A Poem of Kaipara Flat 16 was sold for $103,000, which is the highest price achieved for a work from this series in almost a decade. Ralph Hotere’s 1985 burnished work on steel, The Wind I, achieved $97,200. In addition to this, a superlative example of Allan

Maddox’s late-practice, The Problem with Darth Vader was bought for $18,300. The small, early portrait by Charles F Goldie picturing Te Hei from Ngati Raukawa iwi also achieved a firm result, fetching a price of $160,000. Also of note were two works by Richard Killeen which were met with an unprecedented reception with
City Living, a unique archival pigment print on canvas from 2004, selling for $38,900 and People Passing, a rare example of the artist’s early painting practice, achieving $28,600. In line with recent market activity – where careful consideration of provenance, condition and historical context has
led to a more refined approach from collectors – this sale presented a fine selection of rare and sought-after works that generated strong competition from the market place. We are now accepting consignments for the next auction in this category of sale, to be held on 31 July.

Ron English Webb's Exhibition: 10 - 20 May 2012 Webb’s is pleased to announce New Zealand’s first exhibition by Ron English. English is widely considered to be one of the forefathers of modern street art and beginning with his ‘liberated’ billboards of the 1980’s, in which commercial billboards were illegally altered so that they broadcast political messages, his career has spanned and continued to evolve for more than three decades. Much like the work of contemporaries Banksy and Shepherd Fairey, with whom he has collaborated and exhibited, English’s influence is central to street art’s advancement from a practise focussed on lettering and graphic imagery to a conceptually focussed means of political expression.

Interiors: Modern Design Auction August 2012 Entries now invited The Modern Design auction held in March featured the Mr. Bigglesworthy collection – a selection of pieces with a focus on premium mid-century modern design from the post-World War II era through to the 1970s. Attendance was high with first-time buyers competing alongside committed collectors to secure pieces of classic mid-century design. Following the success of this sale, Webb’s and Mr. Bigglesworthy are pleased to present another auction in this specialist category to be held in August. Suitable items are now invited to complement this sale. The August sale will focus on mid-20th-century innovation: the design and craftsmanship that shaped the modern world. Entries will include international design and objects from early 1950s’ utilitarian designers alongside organic Scandinavian and American design. Antipodean design classics from New Zealand and Australia will also be part of the sale. Included in the auction is this G-Plan armchair, model 6250, by Paul Conti, United Kingdom, 1962. It is a luxurious and masculine armchair, made famous by super-villain ‘Blofeld’ in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice. This top-of-theline armchair captured the glamorous, understated British style of the 1960s. The 1965 catalogue from G-Plan enthuses about its “uncompromising dimensions and comfort”, amply meriting its description as “the world’s most comfortable chair”. This iconic chair also featured in the classic Michael Caine movie Get Carter. Caine’s character Jack Carter puts an end to Cliff Brumby who slumps back into the chair... what a comfortable way to go!

George Woods A collection of works from the estate of the artist

Because of the relatively short and small-scale nature of New Zealand’s art history, I tend to liken it to a not-quite-finished, but nearly complete, 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle. George Woods is, without doubt, an artist who, like many both before and after him, has not yet been given his rightful place in that history. Born near the turn of the 20th century, George Woods received a solid art education at Wellington Technical College from Harry Linley Richardson (1878– 1947) and Frederick Vincent Ellis (1892 – 1961) and possibly the newly arrived Christopher Perkins (1891 – 1968), whose influence on our art history during the short time he was here (three to four years) was sizeable. Although George Woods achieved a reasonable degree of recognition during his rather unorthodox life, he is a largely forgotten figure here in the early years of the 21st century. This body of works released by the family will go a long way to re-establishing his reputation as an important, rare and unique New Zealand-born artist. It is for his graphic works that George Woods is best known. Closely related to woodcuts (the woodcut medium was practised by contemporaries such as E. Mervyn Taylor (1906 – 1964) – with whom Woods once shared a studio), the chronographic linocuts that he produced are amongst the finest in Australasia and, in fact, the world. In contrast to the woodcut – an image-making process that was influenced by the direction of the wood grain and required hard force – the linocut presented Woods with a buttery-smooth substrate that could be shaped with only minimal pressure from the wrist. In such a way, the artist was able craft images that balanced fine and exacting detail with sterling use of unbroken colour. The formative influence that European modernism had on New Zealand’s community of artists and craftspeople that burgeoned in the middle of the 20th century has been widely discussed and, with the work of George Woods, echoes of Matisse are clearly apparent in his constant flirtations with exoticism and eroticism. A deeply fauvist understanding runs through his economical use of line and his bold, poetic use of form carries a graphic immediacy. Further, by choosing to use iconography such as flourishing foliage and fertile female forms, Woods sought to reference art-historical idioms that were commonly understood by a wide audience. Importantly, both in his use of medium and in the themes of wider practice, Wood’s aims were democratic and utilitarian and he was as much a craftsman as he was an ‘artist’. His life’s work more than favourably stands strong and proud when measured against other modernist New Zealand contemporary artists like Russell Clark (1905 – 1966) and the aforementioned E. Mervyn Taylor from that middle period of our art history. That the family of the artist is releasing these works onto the market will give public institutions and private collectors a rare opportunity to acquire very fine examples of some of the artist’s most intimate works. With the release of these 38 works into the market place, I believe another significant piece of our art-historical jigsaw puzzle will have fallen into place. John Perry
