Following the success of last month’s record-breaking auction result of $787,000 for a pair of 19th-century Chinese carved rhinoceros horns, Webb’s is pleased to be offering an extremely rare, circa 18th/19thcentury rhinoceros-horn libation cup in the form of a ‘Jue’ or archaic bronze drinking vessel. It was sourced by Major General George Fleming DSO, OBE, while he was commander of the Shanghai Defence Force during WWII. Also on offer is an impressive
700mm-high rhinoceros horn sold with a 1922 Sudanese government hunting licence. Also in the sale is a massive 885mm rhinoceros-horn walking stick from South Africa. The Interiors: Antiques & Decorative Arts auction features an extensive collection of Georgian and Victorian sterling-silver objects d’art and tableware, New Zealand Rail memorabilia, a collection of Royal Worcester porcelain, a selection of Chinese antique porcelain and
decorative arts, a Polarex 60mm telescope (previously owned by Lionel Warner, curator of Auckland observatory), walking sticks, mantel clocks, zebra and giraffe skins, and good antique English mahogany and oak furniture.
