THE NEW ZEALAND SCENE.
NEW DIRECTOR AT GOVETT- BREWSTER ART GALLERY Simon Rees (above), who has been based in Austria, has come back to New Zealand to take up the role as the new Director for the GovettBrewster and the world-renowned Len Lye Centre. Simon returns to the gallery where he was the Curator of Contemporary Art from 2002 to 2004. It is this local knowledge, together with his recent experience in European galleries, that has brought him back to New Plymouth at this important moment in the gallery’s history. Rees takes up the post of Director in February after finishing up with MAK, the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Arts where he has been Head of Programming and Development since 2010. Before then, Rees was curator for the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) in Vilnius, Lithuania, and editor of CAC Interviu magazine, before taking on the role of head of the exhibitions department and, in 2007, he was commissioner of the award-winning Lithuanian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. The Govett-Brewster is in a new phase, with the commencement of construction of a landmark building for the Len Lye Centre. The plan is that the centre will open in 2015 so Rees has a rigorous fundraising and capital works programme ahead of him. The gallery is currently closed for earthquake upgrading as part of the building works and is presenting a programme of satellite exhibitions and events until it reopens. 6

SIGNIFICANT PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITIONS IN AUCKLAND A Decade of Days – Auckland through Robin Morrison’s eyes Robin Morrison (1944–1993), one of New Zealand’s most celebrated photographers, made striking, unpretentious images that allowed people to see themselves and their ways of life for themselves. This exhibition features photographs of Auckland from 1971 to 1985, discovered in a folder labelled ‘Decade of Days’ amid the vast collection of images given to the museum before Morrison died. This small selection of black-and-white images of the city’s hidden places, the events that shaped the city and its people, offers an insight into the true significance of his work. The exhibition will extend into the heart of Otara with Morrison’s photographs installed in three window boxes in the heart of Otara’s town centre. NEW SENIOR CURATOR AT CITY GALLERY WELLINGTON Robert Leonard, Director of Brisbane’s Institute of Modern Art, is one of New Zealand’s most experienced exhibition makers and he is returning to Wellington to take up the position of Senior Curator at City Gallery in February 2014. He began his career there in 1985 as the first curatorial intern at the National Art Gallery (now Te Papa) and worked there until 1991. In 2002, he returned to the capital

HOTERE CULBERT This physically ambitious exhibition, curated by Aaron Kreisler, brings together for the first time the largest and most significant collection of collaborative works by these acclaimed New Zealand artists. For more than 40 years, these artists produced innovative, emotive and challenging artworks as individuals. As collaborators, they pushed their work and each other in new directions. This is a timely exhibition – Ralph Hotere passed away last year and Bill Culbert represented New Zealand at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013 – which reflects the major contribution that these artists have made to a national and international contemporary art discourse. NEW SMART GALLERY IN CHRISTCHURCH Leading New Zealand artists once more have a space in which to exhibit their work in Christchurch, post-earthquake. In an unexpected location, between an automobile dismantler and an electrical workshop in light industrial Sydenham, just a quiet block back from the main drag, Jonathan Smart reopened his eponymous gallery at Buchan Street in August 2013. The neighbourhood has gentrified since the earthquakes and, with the addition of a contemporary art gallery, Smart thinks that “maybe Sydenham’s going to have another moment”.
This reopening of Jonathan Smart Gallery is a positive move for the Christchurch art market given that Judith Gifford of Brooke Gifford Gallery has decided to retire. Smart says of the post’quake art market. “Every sale’s important. For two years, it went very quiet. It has taken me a couple of years to get this project up and running, and I’m hoping the timing is about right. Things are beginning to lift.” The gallery opens again on 11 February with exhibitions by Judy Darragh and John Pule.

THE WORLD OF ART.
Christies Post-War and Contemporary Art auction, November 2013
RARE OPPORTUNITY TO VIEW BACON TRIPTYCH The Portland Art Museum in Oregon, USA, recently announced that the world’s most expensive artwork ever sold at auction – Francis Bacon’s triptych Three Studies of Lucian Freud – which achieved US$142,400,000 at Christie’s in November 2013, will be on view there until 30 March 2014 before returning to its new owner. Museum Director Brian Ferriso and Chief Curator Bruce Guenther had been looking for an appropriate work to exhibit in the Masterworks/Portland series. They succeeded where others had failed, by putting out feelers to the financial world, and were able to locate the buyer. When the new owner agreed to the museum’s request to exhibit the triptych, they knew it would be a once-in-alifetime opportunity for the public to see such a seminal work. Three Studies of Lucian Freud received an enormous amount of attention after the record-breaking auction sale but it was mostly about the event, not the artwork. The exhibition allows viewers a chance to engage with the work as a painting, with Bacon as an artist and with the subject matter. Painted in 1969, the triptych was separated and sold into three different private collections. It disappeared from view for more than 15 years before being reunited by an Italian collector in the 1990s.
HALL TO DO VENICE HONOURS Adelaide-based artist Fiona Hall will be the first artist to exhibit in Australia’s new pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale. Hall has strong connections to New Zealand and the Pacific. She recently completed a threemonth international residency at Two Rooms Gallery, Auckland, which culminated in a major exhibition Veneer featuring apocalyptic-themed wall works made from Tongan barkcloth. With this project, she achieved a universal, emotionally intense response to 21st-century global disorder in a dystopian world. In 2011, Hall joined a team of eight New Zealand artists on 8

INK ART: PAST AS PRESENT IN CONTEMPORARY CHINA AT THE MET The exhibition explores how contemporary works from a nonWestern culture may be displayed in an encyclopaedic art museum. It is the first time that The Metropolitan Museum of Art has presented a major exhibition of Chinese contemporary art. Presented in the museum’s permanent galleries for Chinese art, the exhibition features artwork that may be best understood as part of the continuum of Chinese traditional culture. These works may be appreciated from the perspective of global art but, by examining them through the lens of Chinese historical artistic paradigms, layers of meaning and cultural significance that might otherwise go unnoticed are revealed. Featuring some 70 works by 35 artists in various media created during the past three decades, the exhibition is organised thematically

ART CITIES OF THE FUTURE: 21ST-CENTURY AVANT-GARDES Phaidon has recently published Art Cities of the Future, a book that boldly predicts contemporary art’s trajectory, articulating the universal language of global art. Although the book’s method of choosing the 12 star cities seems to focus on independent artistic figures rather than museums, galleries or creative spaces, it does provide a thought-provoking look into the modern art world. It asks the question: where is the ‘capital of art’ now located? The book is broken down into 12 sections,
each showcasing the contemporary art period of a certain city. The 12 featured cities are Beirut, Bogota, Cluj, Delhi, Istanbul, Johannesburg, Lagos, San Juan, São Paulo, Seoul, Singapore and Vancouver. It is evident that what has shifted in the art world since the 20th century is pace. It is the constantly changing face of the global art world that demands multiple international centres for a healthy and energetic artistic sphere. Available uk.phaidon.com

WEBB’S
The 2013 auction year witnessed a period of upwards traction for the overall performance of the New Zealand art market, as well as for Webb’s specialised and privileged stronghold within this market. With unsurpassed levels of demand manifested at the highest level of the market, and spirited competition from
Gottfried Lindauer – Mrs Huria Whakamairu, achieved $175,875 - November 2013
collectors to acquire works of superlative quality, the fine art sector demonstrated an extraordinary resilience which is indicative both of an entrenched appreciation and fortitude within the New Zealand art market, and a recognition of the inherent value and investment potential represented by this market.
Bill Hammond – Zoomorphic Lounge, achieved $205,187 - August 2013
It is significant that 2013 marked the highest turnover ever recorded in the New Zealand art market ($20,318,000); not since the early 2000s has the market seen such liquidity and firm demand. Within this context, Webb’s facilitated more fine art sales by value than did any other New Zealand auction house and achieved another year-on-year market gain of 20%. Throughout the year, Webb’s was proud to have facilitated $7,600,000 of fine art sales (excluding private sales); this is a result which is 25% ahead of that of our nearest competitor. Webb’s also secured the majority of the top ten results for 2013, reflecting our privileged position when it comes to being entrusted with marketing the very best contemporary, modern and historical artworks. Particularly notable amongst the achievements of 2013 was the sale of a suite of paintings by Bill Hammond for a total of more than $1,100,000; this includes Farmer’s Market which sold for $328,300. Moreover, in excess of $800,000 worth of paintings by Charles Frederick Goldie went under the hammer. Additionally, Webb’s decisively controlled the market
of modern New Zealand paintings, having sold 60% more major works (i.e. holding values in excess of $100,000) than did our nearest competitor. A raft of new records was set by Webb’s in 2013 including the highest price to be achieved in half a decade for both a contemporary painting and a work by a living New Zealand artist. Further, the year’s final sale of Important Paintings & Contemporary Art, held in late November, achieved a total in excess of $2,000,000: the highest sale turnover of the season. Modern market New Zealand modern art represents a particularly cherished bastion in our national art history, and the domination of this market sector in 2013 by sought-after New Zealand modernists such as Colin McCahon, Ralph Hotere, Evelyn Page and Michael Smither affirmed this. One such highlight was the sale of Colin McCahon’s Landscape with a Road for $115,000. Further, one of the last works painted by Evelyn Page, Breakfast at Hobson Street, sold for $193,462 while Michael Smither’s seminal Elizabeth with Sarah and Joseph achieved $152,450. CATALOGUE 372

Breaking new ground in the contemporary market Evidence of Webb’s stronghold in the contemporary market was made manifest in the 2013 results which saw excellence achieved in presenting sought-after works by the established, prominently celebrated masters of contemporary New Zealand art. Top results included three of the most significant works by Bill Hammond to have been presented at auction: Farmer’s Market ($328,300), Last Nightjar in Congested Sky ($293,125) and Zoomorphic Lounge ($205,187). These sales all confirm a maturing demand from collectors for this artist’s work. Webb’s prides itself on playing a role in furthering exposure and encouraging emerging markets. Webb’s contemporary specialism and passion have been indicated throughout the year in the sale of numerous works by emerging New Zealand artists. Setting a new precedent in the market for Liz Maw’s work, Aura sold for a recordbreaking $56,300. Artist records were also set for the practices of Rohan Wealleans, Trevor Moffitt, Kushana Bush, Jude Rae and David McCracken.
Charles Frederick Goldie – Memories, achieved $281,400
Excellence in the market for historical New Zealand works Within the market for early 20thcentury works of New Zealand art, the attention of the buying audience has historically and unwaveringly been captured by the genre of Maori portraiture. The exceptional results achieved by Webb’s over the last year within this genre show that this is the case more than ever. Moreover,

since we had the opportunity to offer a number of rare and exceptional portraits by Charles Frederick Goldie and Gottfried Lindauer, our marketleading expertise in sourcing rare works of exemplary quality was proven. Of the entire market share of paintings by Charles Goldie to have been presented to auction in 2013, Webb’s was responsible for 66%; this is a figure 200% ahead of that of our nearest competitor. With 40% of Webb’s top prices for the year falling within the genre of Maori portraiture,
our specialisation in this highly prized and historically significant area of the market is evident. Of particular note are the following four highvalue sales made by Webb’s over the year for the work of Charles Goldie: Memories, Wiripine Ninia, a Ngati Awa Chieftainess ($281,400), The Whitening Snows of Venerable Elder Atama Paparangi ($257,950), One of the Old School, Wiripine Ninia ($240,362) and Ngatirea ($152,425). These results are accompanied by the $175,875 achieved for Gottfried Lindauer’s portrait, Mrs Huria Whakamairu.
Ralph Hotere – Vidyapati’s Song, achieved $222,775
All in all, the results achieved pave the way for ongoing excellence as Webb’s continues to dominate the fine art auction market building on our successes in 2014.

WEBB’S
Founded on a history of quality and unique access to an exceptional range of jewels, Webb’s Jewellery department begins 2014 by adding to its legacy of fine jewellery auctions with a series of carefully curated sales. For the first Fine Jewellery & Watches sale of the year to be held on 29 March, Webb’s jewellery specialists are preparing a fully illustrated catalogue, which includes a collection of rare and highly collectable Victorian and Georgian antique pieces.
Also featured are contemporary jewels by leading brands, loose and set diamonds and other precious stones of a wide variety and across a range of price points, necklaces, bracelets, pendants and men’s watches by leading makers. The success of its sales in 2013 saw Webb’s Jewellery department clearly dominate the auction market for fine jewels; in August, it held its first rebranded sale which achieved record-breaking sales totalling $800,193, a 34% increase on the average turnover. For 2014, the Webb’s Jewellery department is excited to commence work on presenting tastefully selected items, not normally available to the general public, at competitive prices. Highlights from 2013 included the record price for an unset stone sold in New Zealand with a 5.00ct cushion-cut diamond realising $205,187. The market for collectable watches performed strongly with a Patek Philippe Queen of Useful Complications achieving $37,520. Other highlights were the sales of a 5.28ct diamond solitaire ring for $58,625 and a platinum and pinksapphire necklace for $43,700, and the numerous high-value transactions for quality jewellery which occurred over the year. Lot 4, Dan Arps – Studies for a Proposed Subdivision, Estimate $1,500-$2,500
In line with this achievement, the sale presents a number of works by contemporary artists using a variety of media, conventional and unconventional, on both a small and a large scale. For the first time, Webb’s is offering a work by Andrew Barber, Study 42, 2008: an elegant, imaginary landscape, beautifully executed in oil on linen with wide house-painter’s brushes. A nicely compact artwork, it is typically seductive, is painted in the artist’s deliberately blurry manner and creates a raw optical field, which the viewer feels compelled to bring into focus. Idiosyncratically, there is a distinct, intended contrast between the way in which the imagery functions from up close and the way it functions from afar. At the other end of the spectrum, we are presenting an immaculate, colourful and sizable painting by Andre Hemer titled Art is Power. Another large painting with a focus on hue and scale by a practising artist is the schematic Big Bang, White Heat by Peter Robinson. In this work, Robinson explores the postmodern phenomenon of being overwhelmed by the volume of information, by painting seemingly unrelated objects drifting in a topsy-turvy manner within a
cosmic blankness. Similarly, in the exuberant, metallic enamel paintings, Alien Hand Painting # 1 and Alien Hand Painting # 5, by John Reynolds, space is used as a double-barrelled metaphor; we may be lost within it but at least there is room to move. Like Robinson, Reynolds utilises a quirky two-dimensionalism, a lively humour and an interest in the links between language and culture which extends to the use of idiom or New Zealand vernacular.

rendered text work. Conceptual in nature, it is meant to be read, first and foremost, so that the meaning can proliferate for the viewer. Like the work of many of his contemporaries, Van Hout’s work recalls the language of graffiti and billboards: often funny and provocative but intended for intelligent and considered discussion. A photographic highlight of the sale is the famous vintage photograph Mongrel Mob Convention, Porirua taken by Ans Westra in 1982. Her candid images make up an extraordinary historical record of their time and give the unique perspective of an expatriate artist recording the life of other New Zealanders. Other photographs of note include Peter Peryer’s gelatin silver print, Erica, Mt Victoria and Brian Brake’s Chengdu Agriculture, China 1959 in chromogenic colour.

series Kauri Trees. There is a fine selection of Pat Hanly screenprints; one in particular, Figure in Light, is number three from a rare edition of six produced in 1966. A special highlight in this category, which will be of interest to collectors, is the large and pristine aquatint titled Delta, from an edition of 48, by the American modernist, Robert Motherwell.
Lot 26, Richard Orjis – Floros, Estimate $1,500 - $2,500
There is a full set of Barry Lett Multiples in its original box with the printed excerpt. The box contains an edition of 12 screenprints representing a generation of artists which includes Pat Hanly, Milan Mrkusich, Colin McCahon, Don Binney and Ralph Hotere. The wellrecognised North Otago Landscape by Colin McCahon from this series is also offered as a single-framed print, as is a lithograph from his other seminal
There is a comprehensive selection of paintings from important artists including Peter Siddell’s To Taranaki, Nigel Brown’s To Celebrate Particular Places, Particular Emotions and Gretchen Albrecht’s Floral – Orange Slant. Albrecht’s work references this landscape genre; however, it shows the emerging presence of a geometric structure within the composition which gives an indication of her later developments. As well as these modern paintings, there are some superb examples of drawing and works on paper by senior contemporary artists. There are two particularly well-resolved landscapes by Robin White, which are typical of her refined regionalist approach, and an equally exquisite portrait by Martin Ball.

Spotlight on
The Market for Graphic Editions
WEBB’S
The notable value development of rare paintings by wellknown New Zealand artists, such as Colin McCahon, Don Binney and Charles Goldie, since the secondary market’s early days is often cited as an illustration of the ability of cultural assets to serve as vehicles for investment. However, the continued ascendance of the market by graphics and multiples demonstrates that fine and soughtafter examples from this category also have promising future growth potential.

Lot 11, Colin McCahon, North Otago, Estimate $4,000 - $6, 000
Much in the same way as one might approach the acquisition of a major work, it is important that criteria such as period, subject matter, form, clarity and condition are also considered when approaching the purchase of an editioned work. Just as it is with major artworks, editioned works and graphics that resonate strongly with a particular period in our nation’s art history, or relate to a celebrated period from a given artist’s career, generally draw the most focused response from the market. While rarity is certainly of importance in this area of the market, an interesting phenomenon also exists whereby the market’s familiarity with a certain image helps to propel demand. This is quite effectively illustrated by the secondary market performance of works from the Multiples series, a portfolio of screenprints initially published by Auckland dealer Barry Lett in 1968. Lett’s intended aim was to produce an inexpensive body of artworks by leading New Zealand artists and, accordingly, the screenprints were unsigned and undated, produced in an unlimited edition and available at a very low price (initially, the entire set could be acquired for $35). The fact that the series was produced in an unknown number has not hampered the market’s enthusiasm and, accordingly, the most in-demand editions, by Colin McCahon and Don Binney, regularly achieve figures in excess of $3,000 each: a 144% and 300% increase from their average price in the 1990s, respectively.
Webb’s last auction in the A2 sale category, held in September 2013, saw a new record price achieved for a print by a New Zealand artist. Don Binney’s Swoop of the Kotare achieved the staggering hammer price of $17,200, a 325% increase on the previous result for the same print (also from 2013). While the print is dated 1980, its imagery is typical of the artist’s practice of the 1970s and, therefore, the extraordinary result speaks to the market’s increasingly refined approach when it comes to editioned graphics. The upcoming sale includes graphics which have increased steadily in value since their initial offering to the auction market and, by the same token, are likely to be subject to value development in the future. For example, while it is perhaps one the artist’s most iconic images, Robin White’s Buzzy Bee for Siulolovao had never been offered at auction until 2011, when it achieved $3,000. The last offering of this print (in 2013) achieved $4,900, which represents a 63% increase in value in just two years. Colin McCahon’s North Otago Landscape, a relief print completed by the artist himself (i.e. rather than by a technician) is well supported by previous secondary market performance. When it was last offered, it achieved $6,250; a remarkable 108% improvement on the previous result for the same image. The sale also includes a number of soughtafter editions by Pat Hanly, which have seen a similarly constant and impressive 360% rise in average price since the 1990s.

Webb’s A2 sales offer an industry-leading forum for the sale of middle-market works holding values of between $1,000 and $20,000. Our recent September A2 sale achieved a new record sale total, by generating total sales in excess of $600,000. Initiating the year with a strong A2 catalogue – spanning modern, contemporary and historical periods – the 2014 season promises the opportunity to build on this success.
“The results achieved in 2013 showcase Webb’s consistent marketing expertise and commitment to securing excellent results for vendors in this area of the market.”
Our September sale achieved outstanding results across the board and a number of new records were established. Not only was the $20,167 sale of Don Binney’s Swoop of the Kotare the highest price ever achieved for a multiple by Binney, it was also the highest price ever achieved for a graphic by a New Zealand artist. A record price was also set for a single photograph by Ans Westra; an untitled work from the Washday at the Pa series secured $6,100.
In addition to this, new artist records were achieved for Ann Shelton and David McCracken. Entries for the forthcoming May A2 sale are now invited and Webb’s team of fine art specialists encourages you to make contact to discuss consignment opportunities.

highest price achieved for a pair of rare Huia birds at auction 2013
Mankind remains as captivated today as ever by the exquisite quality of Tribal art forms. Demand for fine quality and early examples remains firm with collectors focusing on the strongest material presented. 2013 marked another strong year for Webb’s Tribal art department with several highlights and records set across the fields of Maori, Pacific and African arts. Five years ago Webb’s joined forces with leading Oceanic specialist
Jeff Hobbs. With a remit to elevate Maori and Oceanic art as an investment class in its own right for the connoisseur collector, Jeff established a landmark campaign to repatriate Maori taonga and Oceanic artefacts to New Zealand. He has been successful in repatriating a number of pieces and collections of significant Maori taonga. Webb’s work within the field of Tribal & Oceanic artefacts also extends to institutional valuations with Webb’s
being Te Papa’s chosen valuer of Oceanic collectables. Entries are now invited for the May 2014 Oceanic & African Arts auction which will feature strong consignments of Polynesian weaponry, a superb collection of African art and important pieces of Taonga Maori. High levels of demand are expected for exceptional pieces of pounamu workmanship and prestigious carving.

Any deficiency resulting from such resale, after giving credit to the purchaser for any part payment, together with all costs incurred in connection with the lot shall be paid to Webb’s by the purchaser. Any surplus over the proceeds of sale shall belong to the seller and in this condition the expression ‘proceeds of sale’ shall have the same meaning in relation to a sale by private treaty as it has in relation to a sale by auction. I. Title and right of disposal of the goods shall not pass to the purchaser until payment has been made in full by cleared funds. Where any lot purchased is held by Webb’s pending i. clearance of funds by the purchaser or ii. completion of payment after receipt of a deposit, the lot will be held by Webb’s as bailee for the vendor, risk and title passing to the purchaser immediately upon notification of clearance of funds or upon completion of purchase. In the event that a lot is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed before title is transferred to the purchaser, the purchaser shall be entitled to a refund of all monies paid to Webb’s in respect of that lot, but shall not be entitled to any compensation for any consequent losses howsoever arising. 11. Bidders deemed Principals. All bidders shall be held personally and solely liable for all obligations arising from any bid, including both ‘telephone’ and ‘absentee’ bids. examples of adornment that come in for appraisal, hearing the stories behind them really secures jewellery for me as such an intimate medium.”
A hands-on part of all areas of production, Anna lends her expert eye to everything from handling the collections right through to cataloguing and the design of the Jewellery department’s marketing material.
With such an inspired interest in jewellery, Anna is excited to be busy working on the upcoming jewellery sales: the carefully curated Valentine’s sale and, of course, the first major auction of Fine Jewellery & Watches in conjunction with the Jewels: Buy/Sell/Collect auction, both to be held on 29 March 2014. She emphasises that these sales are a must for people who have fine eyes for beautiful things and would like to see a selection of rare and wonderful items made available for purchase.
“I enjoy many parts of my role at Webb’s, I like the collaborative nature of the department I work in, I enjoy designing the catalogue as we strive to put out a quality publication that would hold its own internationally and of course, I love working with the jewellery. I continue to be amazed by the beautiful and diverse
