IMPORTANT OCEANIC AND AFRICAN ART

THE OCEANIC WORLD. The Oceanic and African Art department presents another fine selection of tribal art and single-vendor collections from a diverse range of material cultures from across the globe. With some extraordinary, unexpected and rare objects from Africa, Aotearoa, Australia, the Pacific Islands, Melanesia and Polynesia, this sale has highlights for tribal collectors and aficionados alike. Noteworthy artefacts from Aotearoa include an extraordinarily rare, early Maori serpentine pendant (Lot 133) estimated by archaeologists to have been crafted between 1100 and 1300AD. Discovered in Marlborough’s Pelorus Sound and remaining within a private collection for more than 100 years (before being held on loan by a public museum), this stunning and unique adornment is offered for the first (and, likely, the last) time to the market. Other highlights include a world-class collection of woven textiles and fibre in addition to a broad selection of rare, early weapons and harvesting technologies. The Polynesian materials presented are sourced primarily from two lifetime collections. They offer a broad range of subject matter and one of the highlights is, no doubt, the highly sought-after and very rare Mortlock Islands mask (Lot 78). Also offered is a superb Marquesan tiki figure (Lot 77) and a comprehensive collection of war clubs and adornments.

ABORIGINAL ART IN EUROPE THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ABORIGINAL ART, THE NETHERLANDS The Museum of Contemporary Aboriginal Art (AAMU) in Utrecht, the Netherlands, is the only European museum dedicated exclusively to contemporary Australian Aboriginal visual art and its developments. Recognised for its importance to cultural heritage by the Australian government, the AAMU provides multiple exhibitions per year to showcase leading artists and a wide range of themes.

High-quality African art sourced from established private collectors is presented also. With strong provenance, these artefacts are musts to view and include a collection of magnificent miniatures, a fine Each exhibition offers an Ituri mask, Dan masks and a stunning Kwere shrine overview of the different (Lots 4, 5–22, 29, 33).

directions and evolving trends of contemporary Aboriginal art utilising a vast network of local, European and Australian artists, curators, museums, galleries and private collectors. The AAMU offers year-round exhibitions (Tuesday to Sunday) with public guided tours, workshops, presentations and a range of educational programmes for primary and secondary schools. When Tuesday to Sunday, year round Where Utrecht, the Netherlands

The cultural importance and artistic significance of non-Western art forms cannot be underestimated; they have provided inspiration to modern artists and underscore the ongoing continuum of tribal art practice. They also tell stories of where our ancestors have come from, which enable the viewer to contextualise a sense of presence and place. It is this intrinsic value that we at Webb’s treasure most about this material. Please join us throughout the viewing to enjoy what is a beautiful selection of non-Western art practice. If you are interested in consigning to our upcoming November sale, please do not hesitate to contact our Oceanic and African Art department directly to discuss the market, or for a no-cost, obligation-free and confidential valuation. EVOLUTION OF TRIBAL ARTS Offering an opportunity to gain an insight into the history and craftsmanship of earlier cultures, tribal artefacts and objects have been collected, historically, by archaeologists, anthropologists, private collectors and museums. But now a younger, international clientele is beginning to grow the category; this group is attracted to an aesthetic that combines contemporary living with a renewed fascination for the art of our collective origins. Examples of the increased attention and prominence paid to the category include the prestigious Parisian Parcours des Mondes. Founded in 2002, the tribal art show continues to grow year on year, involves more than 60 galleries and draws more than 100,000 visitors and collectors from around the world. Held from 12 to 18 May, the Tribal Art Week includes Bonham’s and Sotheby’s sales, exhibitions at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a range of gallery auctions, events and showcases, and much more.

Tshibinda Ilunga figure, Wood with a beautiful black shiny patina, Tschokwe people, Angola. Provenance: Charles Ratton, Paris; Armand Charles, Paris (top). African tribal exhibition, Brussels Art Fair – Belgium (above)

Considered an international must-see for tribal art collectors, connoisseurs, curators and dealers, the prestigious Brussels Art Fair (known as BRAFA) is one of the longest-running fairs in the

world and now attracts week-long attendance in excess of 45,000 people. Contemporary tribal art is making its presence felt increasingly in the UK with four London galleries now focusing on African art and the Tate Modern setting up an African acquisitions committee. As the tribal art market expands, the range of shows continues to innovate with their approach to presenting artefacts. Exhibitors are providing concentrated, themed shows of extremely high-quality pieces that provide an opportunity for viewers both to broaden their collections more affordably and to develop their knowledge of our earliest civilisations.

EXTRAORDINARILY RARE SERPENTINE PENDANT Webb’s Oceanic and African Art department is proud to present for public sale an extraordinarily rare serpentine pendant piece (right), discovered in Marlborough’s Pelorus Sound which has remained in a private family collection until very recently.

notches on its lower end are soft and worn. There are also two arcs of notching where the front meets the top. If a naturalistic interpretation was required, it might be suggested that the form is a moth hanging head-downward, the arcs of notching being the ends of the wings.

Estimated by archaeologists to date to early settlement, this very significant artefact is crafted in serpentine, a hard, dense, metamorphic stone not readily used in later Maori carving traditions. “This early Maori pendant …is an object of great beauty and exceptional rarity. It is made from extremely dark green (near black) serpentine. It has a rounded top, segmental cross section, and chiselshaped lower end. Its sides are decorated with numerous small notches, while

As the object was a beach-find its exact source is unknown. However, the extensive use of notching suggests a date very early in New Zealand’s settlement history. Its closest affiliation is probably a pendant in whale ivory from the Coromandel and now in Auckland Museum.” Reg Nichol Picton Archaeologist. Recently on loan to the Marlborough Museum, this very early Maori adornment comes to the market for the first time. IMPORTANT OCEANIC AND AFRICAN ART

78 RARE GABLE MASK SATAWAN ATOLL, MORTLOCK ISLANDS Tapuanu, a beautifully crafted and rare mask of light dry breadfruit wood, the elongated facial plane with delicately drawn geometrically shaped eyebrows and mouth are framed by a blackened beard, and detailed head adornment, the beard area is finely painted with representations of insects. The mask has symmetry in its form which only comes to break the circular head adornment at the top. Masks are rare in Micronesia - traditionally they are only found in the Mortlock group of islands. This classic and rare example painted white using lime and detailed with black using soot. The mask has narrow eye-slits, and would have been secured to the wearer’s head with coconut fibre cord. Such masks represented an ancestor. They were used as ornaments in the ceremonial house and sometimes in boat houses. The ceremonial house was the location of performances by members of a secret society, in which the god of wind was appeased to protect the breadfruit crops from hurricanes and storms. The ceremonies included dancing and feasting. This mask closely resembles one sold by Sothebys December 4th 2004 possibly the match for the opposing gable and crafted by the same master carver. 133Y IMPORTANT MAU KAKÏ / NGA TOHU TAWHITO 1100 - 1300 When Maori ancestors first set foot on Aotearoa they wore keepsakes from their home islands. Adornments that signified rank, family lineage, cultural origins or simply the thoughts and protection of the loved ones they had left behind. The ‘Ancient’ (tawhito) ‘sign’ (tohu) which are early Maori adornments link our first settlers to the long history of discovery and settlement of the Pacific, and underscore the remarkable fact that Aotearoa was the last Pacific island group to be settled by humankind. These early settlers were the heirs to many generations of experience in the Pacific which shaped (and continues to shape) a deeply unique material

culture. The first settlers continued to produce and wear east polynesian adornment for an unknown period of time – perhaps a century for some forms such as the rei puta, never the less over time the manufacturing techniques and the material of culture of the land developed new styles that became distinctly Maori. With this some Nga Tohu Tawhito such as this one have no apparent successors but do leave traces of reference such as the notching that frames this particular piece. Such notching is a relatively common accent among the handful of Nga Tohu Tawhito that reside in public collection today. The distinct form of this ancient adornment is characterised by it beautifully balanced form and symmetry.

Reminiscent of the scared adze its triangular cross elevation represents a key element in ancient navigation – the triangulation between Aotearoa, Hawai´i and Rapanui. This motif is present from every perspective in the piece. The concave surface echoes the forms relationship with the adze and enables the piece to be worn with comfort against the wearers chest. The suspension hole shows sign of significant wear which indicates the piece once held an inter generational lineage. PROVENANCE Originally collected in the Marlborough Sounds. 188Y MALE HUIA In superb condition with a male huia perched on a lichen covered wood base. The huia is one of New Zealand’s best known extinct birds because of its bill shape, its sheer beauty, and special place in Maori culture and oral tradition. The bird was regarded by Maori as tapu (sacred), and the wearing of its skin or feathers was reserved for individuals of high status. The huia was a bird of deep metallic, bluish-black plumage

with a greenish iridescence on the upper surface, especially around the head. The tail feathers were unique among endemic birds. Huia were hunted to obtain their long, striking tail feathers for locally fashionable hat decorations. The second major cause of extinction was the widespread deforestation of the lowlands of the North Island by settlers to create pasture for agriculture. Most of these forests were ancient, ecologically complex primary forests, and huia were not

able to survive in regenerating secondary forests. The last confirmed sighting of a huia was on 28 December 1907 in the Tararua Ranges. Further credible sightings near Wellington were reported until 1922 and in Te Urewera National Park in the early 1960s. PROVENANCE Private collection, New Zealand. H.350mm, W.330mm. cultivating the best barley in the province. In 1867, George migrated back to England before returning to New Zealand with his new wife in 1873. The couple had two daughters, who attended Panmure School. In 1882, they had a son who died at eight months old, prompting them to return to England. Before departing, George purchased the carte de visite as souvenirs of their time in New Zealand. The prints have remained in the family ever since. This exceptional collection features 22 Maori portraits, including several tribal leaders.

Among those identified are: Hati Wira Takahi, Tamati Waka Nene, Tawhiao, Ratene Hihitawa, Wiremu Tamihana, Parore Te Awha, Rewi Manga Maniapoto and Paora Tuhaere. “An appreciation for Oceanic & African Art drives our focus on quality and exquisite craftsmanship. This focus and understanding has resulted in a positive increase in results achieved for Webb’s Oceanic & Tribal department.”

highest price achieved for a Nguru flute at auction

Mankind remains as captivated today as ever by the exquisite quality of Tribal art forms. Demand for fine quality and early examples remains firm with collectors focusing on the strongest material presented. 2013 marked another strong year for Webb’s Tribal Art Department with several highlights and records set across the fields of Maori, Pacific and African arts. Five years ago Webb’s joined forces with leading Oceanic specialist

Jeff Hobbs. With a remit to elevate Maori and Oceanic art as an investment class in its own right for the connoisseur collector, Jeff established a landmark campaign to repatriate Maori taonga and Oceanic artefacts to New Zealand. He has been successful in repatriating a number of pieces and collections of significant Maori taonga. Webb’s work within the field of Tribal & Oceanic artefacts also extends to institutional valuations with Webb’s

being Te Papa’s chosen valuer of Oceanic collectables. Entries are now invited for the November 2014 Oceanic & African Arts auction which will feature strong consignments of Polynesian weaponry, a superb collection of African art and important pieces of Taonga Maori. High levels of demand are expected for exceptional pieces of pounamu workmanship and prestigious carving.

Any person wishing to bid as agent for a third party must obtain written authority to do so from Webb’s prior to bidding. 12. ‘Subject Bids’. Where the highest bid is below the reserve and the auctioneer declares a sale to be ‘subject to vendor’s consent’ or words to that effect, the highest bid remains binding upon the bidder until the vendor accepts or rejects it. The above conditions shall apply to all buyers of goods from Webb’s irrespective of the circumstances under which the sale is negotiated. 14. Condition of Items.
