We are pleased to be auctioning a rare Meiji-era formal court uniform, formerly the property of Prince Ito Hirobumi (1841–1909), Samurai of the Choshu domain, Japanese statesman and four times Prime Minister of Japan. Ito Hirobumi was responsible for establishing a cabinet, a civil service (1885) and a privy council (1888), which he headed. He supervised (1883–89) the drafting of the constitution of 1889 and was intimate adviser to the Emperor. In 1905, Ito forced an agreement making Korea a virtual protectorate of Japan and became Illustrated Cover: Lot 76. A 19th Century Indo Persian Portrait Miniature $200 - $400

His impressive dress uniform offers a close link to an extraordinary statesman and an important part of Japanese political history. The sale opens with a Maritime section which consists of the collection of ex-Royal New Zealand Navy Servicemen’s Association and sailing memorabilia from Mr and Mrs Croix-Grut; they are believed to have been the first New Zealand couple to circumnavigate the globe in a yacht.
