It not only sets a new precedent in both its depth and level of quality but also responds to a genuine resurgence of interest in this genre of collecting. Our last specialist ceramic sale broke records for work by Mirek Smisek and Len Castle and the sale enjoyed a sell-through rate of more than 90%. Three major private Auckland collections are combined for this sale which includes over 40 works by Barry Brickell. They are predominantly from the collection of the late Doctor Joan Chapple who was a close and long-time friend of Barry Brickell; she was a respected surgeon, New Zealand’s first hand surgeon and the first female plastic surgeon. From her collection, we are honoured to offer: a rare open-form architectural panel made up of five separate components and housed in a rimu frame; several outdoor terracotta sculptures with naturally aged patina; a relief wall plaque; and functional salt-glazed and woodfired domestic ware.
The auction also offers more than 50 works by Len Castle including two large and impressive branch pots, a good selection of bowls, including avian-form bowls, crater-lake bowls and shino-glazed bowls, slab vases, gourds and sea secrets. As well as those, there is a collection of his works from the highly sought-after Crum Brickworks period, which are presented to the market for the first time since they were purchased directly from the artist in the 1950s. In May this year, Mirek Smisek, one of the grandfathers of studio pottery in New Zealand, passed away. After coming to New Zealand to join the team at Crown Lynn, he was the country’s first independent studio potter; he continued this career throughout his lifetime. Awarded an OBE in 1990, he made a significant contribution to studio ceramics in New Zealand. We present a small offering of his work including some highly acclaimed salt-glazed works for which he is best known, along with an early stoneware teapot with bands of wavy lines reminiscent of his Crown Lynn Bohemia Ware range. Other highlights in the sale include star pieces by Roy Cowan, Juliet
