WEBB’S
It is upon this belief that Webb’s Fine Jewellery and Watches department is founded; we pride ourselves on our connoisseurship and ongoing quest for excellence, and believe that, when handling objects of great beauty, knowledge is everything.
Since the Fine Jewellery and Watches department was established in 1976, Webb’s has distinguished itself as a destination for diamonds, coloured gemstones, diamond jewellery, antique jewels and watches – desirable items that have put sparkle and shine into the worlds of innumerable clients. Whether it is investment-quality loose diamonds, collectable watches or a family heirloom pair of gold cuff links that you have to offer, our experienced and highly knowledgeable team approaches the appraisal, consignment and sale of each item with the utmost attention to detail and care throughout the process. An exciting shift in 2013 has led to a newly formed department, one which offers a strong balance of experience, pan-industry knowledge and specialist endeavour. Leading the team of experts is jewellery designer Zora Bell Boyd, who, with a background in precious gemstone trading, bespoke jewellery manufacture and the world of high fashion, brings strategic thinking and a fresh approach to the department. Libby Lewis, a specialist in diamonds, gemstones and fine contemporary jewellery, is an accredited jewellery professional (Gemmology Institute of America) with international experience in the jewellery-rich region of Dubai. Anna Carr (née Ward) is a practising jeweller who, since graduating in 2004 with a Bachelor of Design (Honours) degree, majoring in Contemporary Jewellery, and a Postgraduate Diploma in teaching, has exhibited nationally and internationally. Zora, Libby and Anna join Peter Downey, one of New Zealand’s foremost jewellery specialists with 44 years’ experience in the market. Peter was director of the department in the early 1980s and brings extensive expertise and specialist knowledge of Castellani, Guiliano, Fabergé, Cartier, art nouveau and art deco. The vision and expertise of this dynamic team will ensure
continued success for the department as we assert our position at the forefront of the jewellery auction market in New Zealand. Although many of the items we handle were forged, crafted and fashioned in days gone by, Webb’s Fine Jewellery and Watches department is an entirely modern operation. Submissions can be initiated by email; all pieces are expertly appraised and professionally photographed for exhibition across the web, in social media and on Webb’s in-house Facebook platform, BuddyBid, which is now being used by businesses around the world to auction items directly through their own Facebook pages. No appointment is required to initiate the consultation, appraisal and valuing processes. Quotes are free of charge and confidential, and all consultation is on a no-obligation basis. We hope you enjoy the raft of beautiful items contained within this catalogue and join us on site at Webb’s at 11:00am on Saturday 10 August, and at 11:00am on Sunday 11 August for our inaugural Jewel – Buy/Sell/Collect event where we celebrate quality-forvalue jewellery, much of which will be offered at no reserve. Online and telephone bidding will be available for these sales.

CATALOGUE 360 357
WEBB’S
Whilst Rolex ranks as one of the 100 most-valuable global brands and the largest single luxury watch brand, this significant commercial and industrial achievement can, at times, raise debate over the true, intrinsic value of Rolex.
For a company that has little to say for itself (Rolex remains privately owned and is notoriously clandestine), the fact that Rolex ranks as an iconic brand is in itself somewhat incongruous. Its design aesthetic evolves glacially in a dynamic market of complicated movements, exquisite engineering, rarer watches (subjected to more hand finishing) and increasingly better-looking designs. Yet, year on year, demand for Rolex remains remarkably strong and the collectors’ market for vintage Rolex continues to rise, as does the asking price. In May of this year, a Rolex Daytona sold at auction for $634,455. To appreciate Rolex, one must understand the origins of its founder, Hans Wilsdorf, and the design philosophy he instilled into his exquisite empire. Born in 1881, Hans Wilsdorf was orphaned by the age of 12. Inheriting a modest bequeathment, he was able to follow his dream of understanding and learning the finest of 19th-century engineering and metallurgy technique – horology and the art of watchmaking. In 1903, he moved to London where Rolex (the name is derived from ‘Rolling Export’) was established in 1905 at a time when wristwatches were considered a gimmick (think mobile phones around 1989). In order to address this perception, Wilsdorf set out to achieve three very important things: First, there was the quest for precision. He had all Rolex movements tested against a 45-day marine chronometer tolerance measure. Rolex had to be scientifically purposeful.
He invented a solution to the common criticism that wristwatches were susceptible to dirt and moisture (such things affected the efficient working of the intricate movements). In 1926, he patented the now-definitive screw-down crown and thus the ‘Oyster’ was born. The logical consequence of this was the creation of a self-winding system that minimised the need to adjust the movement via the crown and ensured the safety of the internal movement. These three not-so-simple achievements allowed Rolex to evolve incrementally and in a manner that ensured the success of Wilsdorf’s vision that Rolex deliver chronometric precision and quality for value. This philosophy might be seen best in the creation of the ‘Submariner’, perhaps Rolex’s most iconic model that, to this day, continues to embody the unlikely mix of utilitarian luxury and uncontrived quality. The Submariner reflects Wilsdorf’s personal attributes: focused, complicated, robust and understated. These characteristics underscore the intrinsic value of Rolex as a company. Personal tragedy struck in 1944 when the death of his much-loved wife left him alone and without heirs. Unwilling to leave Rolex in the hands of a stranger after his death, he decided in 1945 to transfer all his shares to the newly created Hans Wilsdorf Foundation which allocates vast sums to charities in memory of his wife. Such was the man who created Rolex.

CATALOGUE 360
WEBB’S
Our highly anticipated winter sale of Important Paintings and Contemporary Art will present a refined selection of modern, historical and contemporary works from New Zealand and international artists. The catalogue for this sale is now available in print and online and it is on view with the sale of Jewels and Watches from 2nd August. The early modernist period is well represented in this sale, with the inclusion of a rare and important limestone sculpture of a Tuhoe woman by Russell Clark alongside significant works by John Tole, John Weeks and Leo Bensemann. Consignments from the late modernist period are also strong, with a number of historically important works including: a large-scale work on jute canvas by Colin McCahon from the Jump series amongst a collection of eight works by the artist which are part of the auction; a masterpiece by Michael Smither from the seminal Domestic series; a Black Window by Ralph Hotere presented in a villa sash window frame which comes from the family of the late Rodney Kirk-Smith, director of Auckland’s RKS Art gallery and the artist’s dealer and friend; and a pair of Hotere Song Cycle banners bearing Hone Tuwhare’s poem No Ordinary Sun alongside works by Dick
Frizzell, Milan Mrkusich, Allen Maddox and Don Binney.
Important Paintings & Contemporary Art
We are also delighted to present a superb work by Charles Frederick Goldie, dated 1915, and depicting one of his favoured subjects, Wiripine Ninia, a Ngati Awa chieftainess. Further significant historical works in the sale include an important 1913 Charles Blomfield painting, White Terraces, and a majestic watercolour by John Barr Clarke Hoyte. On behalf of the Curnow family, we are very pleased to be offering the collection of the late Allen and Jeny Curnow as part of this sale. This collection, put together over many years, comprises a survey of early modernist and modernist New Zealand practice and includes works by Colin McCahon and Charles Tole. The sale boasts an impressive selection which encompasses the scope and talent of a number of New Zealand’s leading contemporary artists. Included are two significant Andrew McLeod works, a recent Bill Hammond painting, Moa Hunter Cave (2009), and Shane Cotton’s Kiddy Kiddy. Other standout contemporary offerings include an early work by Liz Maw, Aura, Rohan Wealleans’ brilliant local Mondrian adaptation, Grey Lynn Boogie Woogie, Michael Parekowhai’s Elmer Keith photograph and a beautiful Seraphine Pick, Careworn. We are also pleased to be presenting for sale John Pule’s Tau Malal, an untitled work by Peter Robinson, a large-scale work by Bill Hammond which has an emerald-green palette and is from the highly regarded Zoomorphic series, and – for the first time ever on the New Zealand auction market – the work of internationally renowned Hiroshi Sugimoto: a photogravure, U.A. Walker Theatre, New York 1978.

Important Conditions of Sale for Watches Please note: as many of the timepieces are old, or their history is unknown, Webb’s offers no guarantee as to mechanical condition or condition of seals etc. A timepiece described as ‘fine’ or ‘as new’ is an opinion as to appearance only. All watches are sold as viewed. It shall be assumed that all buyers have inspected the lots and that they are happy with them in all respects. Watches cannot be returned on the grounds that repairs or service have been carried out, or parts (including straps or bracelets) have been supplied, by anyone other than the named maker. Notwithstanding the foregoing condition, named wristwatches are sold on the basis that the movement (or movement and case where both would normally have been manufactured by the named maker) were manufactured by the named maker. It is recommended that buyers have watches serviced promptly to ensure that damage does not arise from faulty seals or any other aspect of mechanical condition.

Important Conditions of SALES Before the sale, all lots may be examined at the exhibition times specified in the catalogue. Interested persons including, without limitation, bidder’s representatives and auction agents, are understood to have examined all lots which they purchase and to accept their condition as they are at the moment of the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, and not necessarily as they are described in any written material or oral communications. In placing bids, auction participants acknowledge that they have independently inspected and evaluated every lot they are bidding on. FINE JEWELLERY Independent Gemmological Reports and Valuations: Valuations are made available to Webb’s customers to provide an independent opinion as to the quality of the stones and metals comprising a piece, and so that buyers can obtain suitable insurance cover immediately upon purchase and prior to delivery. A valuation for insurance purposes represents a calculated replacement cost allowing for maximum retail margins, so that an insurer can assess the outer limit of their exposure to risk. It does not represent actual new retail replacement, as it makes no provision for competitive trade practice, or for discounts obtained by individual bargaining. Value estimates have been arrived at with the assistance of experts, tests and other methods which Webb’s has deemed in its sole discretion to be appropriate. Whilst Webb’s staff will assist buyers in understanding the methodology and technical details of Gemmological reports and valuations, all auction participants are responsible for reaching their own conclusions as to the value of lots prior to bidding. Webb’s, its consultants and employees make no representation or warranty regarding any opinion, valuation or certificate of any item on offer. Buyers should note the stated purpose of the valuation (insurance, retail market, cash value, estate division etc).
Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been mounted when assessed for weight, colour or clarity, and the descriptions given in the catalogue or report are therefore limited in accuracy. Where an actual weight is given, the stone will have been weighed loose to minimise error margins. Nonetheless, the buyer accepts that all reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact. Jewels Buy/Sell/Collect An exceptional offering of antique and desirable modern pieces, amongst which are diamond rings, heavy gold chains, several gold wrist and pocket watches, diamond and precious stone rings, earrings, heavy silver chains, rock-crystal beads, lockets, pendants, 19th-century paste set jewellery and many other items of interest, mostly without reserve. WRIST & POCKET WATCHES Important Conditions of Sale for Watches: As many of the timepieces are old, or their history is unknown, Webb’s offers no guarantee as to the mechanical condition or condition of seals, etc. A timepiece described as ‘fine’ or ‘as new’ is an opinion relating to appearance only. Conditions continue on page 88.

A diamond’s cut grade refers to the quality of the tiny surfaces, or facets, polished onto its surface. The facets, known as the crown, culet, table, girdle and pavilion, are arranged with precise mathematical proportions to maximise a diamond’s fire, life and brilliance. The cut, not to be confused with the shape, is the only element of the four Cs to be influenced by the human hand. There are tables of proportion percentages, which are for diamond cutters and graders. Diamond cut grades range from ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’, to the mid-range ‘good’ and low-end classifications of ‘fair’ and ‘poor’.

and quality are determined by the Four Cs: a concept first introduced by De Beers in 1939.
Carat is the unit of weight for all gemstones. One carat is subdivided into 100 ‘points’. Therefore, a diamond measuring 75 points is three-quarters of a carat in weight or 0.75ct. There are five carats in a gram. Carat is a measure of weight, not size. Most importantly, two diamonds can be of equal carat weight, but their values can differ greatly due to the cut, colour and clarity of each.
rich; these are called ‘fancy colours’. The differences between one shade and the next are very subtle, so grading is carried out under controlled lighting, using a master diamond sample set for comparison and accuracy. Natural diamonds also occur in shades of blue, green, yellow-orange, pink, red and even black. Known as ‘coloured fancies’, these stones are extremely rare and valuable. They are graded according to the intensity of their colour. Clarity Clarity refers to the presence of inclusions in a diamond. All diamonds contain imperfections. These are naturally occurring features – wisps of minerals, uncrystallised carbon and tiny fractures – formed deep within the diamond when it was first created. Most inclusions are not visible to the naked eye. The clarity of a diamond is graded by a gemmologist using 10X magnification. Clarity grades range from IF and FL (internally flawless) to I (included); a grade may also indicate whether the inclusion is near the centre of the stone or along its girdle, or outer edge. Colour Ideally, a diamond should have no colour at all – like a drop of spring water. Increasing degrees of body colour are measured on a scale ranging from no colour at all (D) to deeply coloured (Z). Beyond ‘Z’ is the range where the diamond’s colour is vivid and CATALOGUE 357

Buyers proceed upon their own judgement. Buyers shall be deemed to have inspected the lots, or to have made enquiries to their complete satisfaction, prior to sale and by the act of bidding shall be deemed to be satisfied with the lots in all respects. 7. Webb’s Act as Agents. They have full discretion to conduct all aspects of the sale and to withdraw any lot from the sale without giving any reason. 8. Collection. To issue proceeding against the purchaser for damages for breach of contract.

B. To rescind the sale of that or any other lot sold to the purchaser at the same or any other auction. C. To resell the lot by public or private sale. Any deficiency resulting from such resale, after giving credit to the purchaser for any part payment, together with all costs incurred in connection with the lot shall be paid to Webb’s by the purchaser. Any surplus over the proceeds of sale shall belong to the seller and in this condition the expression ‘proceeds of sale’ shall have the same meaning in relation to a sale by private treaty as it has in relation to a sale by auction. D. To store the lot whether at Webb’s own premises or elsewhere at the sole expense of the purchaser and to release the lot only after the purchase price has been paid in full plus the accrued cost of removal storage and all other costs connected to the lot. E. To charge interest on the purchase price at a rate 2% above Webb’s bankers’ then current rate for commercial overdraft facilities, to the extent that the price or any part of it remains unpaid for more than seven days from the date of the sale. F. To retain possession of that or any other lot purchased by the purchaser at that or any other auction and to release the same only after payment of money due. G. To apply the proceeds of sale of any lot then or subsequently due to the purchaser towards settlement of money due to Webb’s or its vendor. Webb’s shall be entitled to a possessory lien on any property of the purchaser for any purpose while any monies remain unpaid under this contract. H. To apply any payment made by the purchaser to Webb’s towards any money owing to Webb’s in respect of any thing whatsoever irrespective of any directive given in respect of, or restriction placed upon, such payment by the purchaser whether expressed or implied. I. Title and right of disposal of the goods shall not pass to the purchaser until payment has been made in full by cleared funds. Where any lot purchased is held by Webb’s pending i. clearance of funds by the purchaser or ii. completion of payment after receipt of a deposit, the lot will be held by Webb’s as bailee for the vendor, risk and title passing to the purchaser immediately upon notification of clearance of funds or upon completion of purchase. In the event that a lot is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed before title is transferred to the purchaser, the purchaser shall be entitled to a refund of all monies paid to Webb’s in respect of that lot, but shall not be entitled to any compensation for any consequent losses howsoever arising. 11. Bidders deemed Principals. All bidders shall be held personally and solely liable for all obligations arising from any bid, including both ‘telephone’ and ‘absentee’ bids. Any person wishing to bid as agent for a third party must obtain written authority to do so from Webb’s prior to bidding. 12. ‘Subject Bids’. Where the highest bid is below the reserve and the auctioneer declares a sale to be ‘subject to vendor’s consent’ or words to that effect, the highest bid remains binding upon the bidder until the vezndor accepts or rejects it. If the bid is accepted there is a contractual obligation upon the bidder to pay for the lot. 13. SALES POST AUCTION OR BY PRIVATE TREATY. The above conditions shall apply to all buyers of goods from Webb’s irrespective of the circumstances under which the sale is negotiated. 14. Condition of Items. Condition of items is not detailed in this catalogue. Buyers must satisfy themselves as to the condition of lots they bid on and should refer to clause six. Webb’s are pleased to provide intending buyers with condition reports on any lots.
