INTRODUCTION This catalogue encompasses a diverse range of cultures from Africa, Aotearoa, Australia, the Pacific Islands, Melanesia and Polynesia. Curating this auction has been a great pleasure; the quality of artefacts is very high and some very rare objects have been consigned.

A highlight of this auction is a large offering of Maori fish-hooks and fishing technologies from the Webster Collection. Kenneth Athol Webster (1906–1967) was an avid collector with a voracious appetite for materials related to New Zealand. After World War II, he became a collector-dealer in London and began challenging the attitudes of the period in Britain regarding Polynesian and Maori artefacts. Webster had amassed numerous artefacts from New Zealand, through purchasing and exchange, such as a wahaika, tikis and more. After Webster’s death, his collection was dispersed; some became part of the collections at the Turnbull Library and Te Papa Tongarewa while others were sold to private international buyers and collectors.

Another highlight is a superb 19th-century kahu kiwi feather cloak from the Whanganui region, illustrated on the cover of this catalogue. In exceptional condition, this cloak features beautiful kaka-and-tui-feather side borders with plump, luminous kiwi feathers at the centre.

Some excellent examples of Polynesian and Melanesian art have been consigned, such as Polynesian clubs, Melanesian masks and shields. A stunning array of African art is also on offer, including fine Pende and Dogon masks. The selection is of high quality and sourced from a private New York collection; the provenances of these artefacts are strong and comprise well-known collectors and dealers.

Following on from a successful sale in September of last year, we have again obtained a great selection of tribal rugs from a private collection. In exceptional condition, these rugs come from Afghanistan, the Rajasthan area of north India and Iran.

10 YORUBA BEADED CROWN A spectacular example used by the Yoruba kings in Nigeria. Yoruba rulers wear crowns on State occasions and during public functions.

A built-up, hollowed, cup-shaped base with raised facial features and animal form standing above; the crown is then embellished over the entire surface with multi-coloured beads. Nigeria.

Estimate $6,000 - $8,000 19 CHIWARA MALI In the superbly stylised form of a female antelope, the chiwara stands upon a rectangular platform which is pierced for attachment to a headdress. Faceted, angular plains form the body and legs. An elongated tubular neck with a leather collar supports the animal’s head. The head offers an open mouth with tongue protruding, a pierced nose, inset circular eyes and fine, incised patterning. From the back of the head, ears extend in backswept position framing two carved, elegantly curving horns. Rich, darkbrown patina.

Estimate $2,000 - $3,000 21 THE LAST GREAT MASK - SIGI These plank like masks were made once every 60 years on the occasion of the sigui as a replacement for the previous. These great masks represent the first ancestor who died in the form of a serpent (Lebe). The Dogon who follow the rituals of the society of masks possess a shelter near their village where the great masks both old and new are stored.

The masks are believed to date back to the 14th century after a discovery by French anthropologist Marcel Griaule who counted nine great masks stored in the village of Ibi. The Sigi Mask offered is believed the 10th and last to be made. This mask came from Songo village and was passed from the chief to his son after his death.

36 SUPERB AFRICAN CLUB Spherical head with hollowed face and raised ridge to centre incorporating a finely carved elongated nose and small mouth.

AOTEAROA

37 FINE TOKOTOKO c 1870, BY JACOB WILLIAM HEBERLEY (1849 - 1906) OF TE ATI AWA WELLINGTON DESCENT This is a superb and masterfully carved tokotoko; the gently tapering shaft is decorated with fine kawhaiwhai design, haehae and pataki notching which leads to two manaia figures. The first has a large tongue and circular teeth while the second rests atop the first. Above these manaia figures are two highly stylised tattooed male and female figures.

The male stands with his back to the female figure, his feet rest on her shoulders. The curved handle at the top terminates with a manaia head end. It is carved from hardwood with a rich, dark-brown patina and inlays of paua and bone to the eyes.

Jacob Heberley (also known as Hakopa Heperi) grew up in Queen Charlotte Sound then, as a young man, moved to Wellington where he began his carving career. In the absence of practising Te Ati Awa carvers, he was apparently self-taught. He developed a distinctive personal carving style that had some resemblance to earlier Te Ati Awa work and to contemporaneous Rotorua carvings but, as far as is known, he had no direct connection with either school. Heberley’s carving output consisted of non-functional replicas and models of traditional artefacts, and innovative items such as walking sticks, containers and picture frames.

Most important among his patrons were: the governor and his wife,

Lord and Lady Ranfurly; other prominent Wellington collectors of Maori curios such as Alexander Turnbull and Walter Buller; politicians such as Richard Seddon, Robert Stout, Julius Vogel and Joseph Ward; and government departments commissioning gifts for distinguished visitors.

Heberley was responsible for many of the official gifts presented to the Dukes and Duchesses of Cornwall and York during their visit to New Zealand in 1901, and for the frame of the illuminated address presented

by Richard Seddon on behalf of the people of New Zealand to King Edward VII on his coronation in 1902. His art fulfilled its most significant role in the historical context of New Zealand as a developing nation striving to find a distinctive identity. Thanks largely to his skill and the prominence of his art in official circles, Maori carvings became accepted as powerful symbols of the new nation, serving as appropriate gifts in the political, sporting and cultural scenes both locally and internationally.

38 HEAVILY SAWN GIANT POUNAMU SLAB A superb example of the scale of labour undertaken by the early pre-European Maori master craftsmen. This example is uncompleted and represents phase three in the manufacture of a toki pou tangata.

The top face is flat and smoothly polished. A medium-light pounamu (nephrite).

41 EARLY MERE POUNAMU - GREENSTONE A highly valued and potent cultural symbol of mana (authority and prestige) as well as an effective weapon during the pre-musket era. Mere of this form are very rare and hard to come by. Stone tooled with no ridges in the butt, which was typical of the 17th/18th ceontury pre-European meres. Ridge butts were really a decoration that came in the 1700s onwards. Nice dark green colour with waves of lighter green.

44 RARE WHAKAPAKOKO ATUA - GOD STICK Wooden staff with mythological figure carved to top believed to represent a god, possibly of agriculture or war. Deeply carved, round eyes with missing paua shell and plain shaft with pierced hole for peg attachment.

These sticks were often located near gardens and were also used as protective talismans. Light-brown weathered patina.

45 FINE WAKA HUIA BASE Finely carved cocoon-shaped vessel guarded by two tiki figures each offering detailed facial carving and notched paua eyes. Composition of base anchored by a beautiful combination of rauponga which spiral out in an orthodox rarua form; centred ribbing extends from either side of the rarua to connect each tiki. Each quadrant of the base decorated with highly refined triple haehae and pakati combinations displayed in diagonal form with each row of pakati carved in opposing directions. The interior of waka huia base finished in a traditional manner with scraping evident. Designed to be hung from the rafters and viewed from below. The fine carving reflects the work of a master carver.

46 FINE EARLY WAKA HUIA Of orthodox ovoid form, the lid recessing accurately into the base. Carved with a flat-bladed tool; kinked longitudinal rauponga lends this waka huia a distinctive appearance which suggests it is of East Coast manufacture.

Four minimal spiral motifs provide an overall sense of balance. On each shoulder of the box are intertwined triple haehae. Guarded by two projecting wheku heads, they are finely carved and offer significant yet subtle differences. The base offers a further eight bands of kinked rauponga which are interrupted by another set of intertwined triple

haehae. Deposits of fine, red powder are evident throughout.

The arero (tongue) is elaborately decorated with fine and highly skilled triple haehae and p*kati carving. Abstracted teeth forms accentuate the mouth. Large serrated paua-shell eyes in oval form are embedded, with the high brow offering further intricate carving which differs slightly on either side. Mid-section of staff has a naturally occurring hole. This prestigious taiaha was gifted to John Daniels by a chief from the Gisborne area in the 19th century whilst he was working to salvage a ship; after this, the chief joined Daniels in Mount Victoria, Wellington, for a short period.

82 SUPERB KAHU KIWI CLOAK A rare and beautiful Maori kahu kiwi feather cloak from the 19th century. The cloak is adorned with mature brown kiwi feathers, in orthodox style. The side borders are embellished with kaka and tui feathers. The kiwi feathers are tightly compacted to form plump, luminous appearance. In exceptional condition with only a small amount of loss to the top left corner, which is consistent with usage. From the Wanganui region. Oral family history accounts that the vendor’s father received the scar on his nose after he was kidnapped by a Maori tribe up the river, and that he was returned to his father wrapped in this feather cloak.

83 EARLY KAITAKA PAEPAEROA CLOAK Kaitaka is the name given to the prestigious cloaks that were recorded and collected by early European explorers. They were woven using unbeaten New Zealand flax; thus, the flax was allowed to retain its shining quality. The muka selected from the harakeke plants was prepared with the greatest of care and attention to ritual. The complexity and elegance of the taniko borders are unsurpassed by any other Maori cloak forms. Featuring vertical aho, this rare form of chiefly cloak is created from one side to the other and then turned when it is worn. Note that the aho appears as vertical as opposed to horizontal. There are areas of ‘V’ shaping (aho poka - short weft) at shoulder and waist level. The taniko is in brown-black and undyed muka. The vertical borders show complex triangular motifs and interchanging parallel borders of light and dark brown. Brightly dyed wool has been added later in the kauko (side) vertical taniko. The remu (bottom) taniko border is extremely fine

and complex reflecting the work of a master craftswoman. This form of kaitaka became obsolete around 1840 as another cloak style known as korowai grew in popularity and replaced it. Overall condition of this rare example is excellent; some conservation work is apparent. A full condition report is available on request.

84 KAHU HURUHURU - PRESTIGIOUS FEATHER CLOAK Introduced in the second half of the 19th century, the kahu huruhuru celebrated the prestigious nature of the Polynesian cloak with the use of high-status bird species such as the kereru, kakariki, kaka and tui.

Notably, kahu huruhuru are worked in an upside-down manner with the geometric workings starting from the bottom; this suggests they are a development from the orthodox korowai cloak with even earlier roots reaching back into the pre-contact rain cloaks (hieke). The thrum commencement at the bottom edge establishes the whenu (warps) at seven per centimetre. The aho (wefts) are woven in whatu aho rua

(double-pair twining) with seven to eight millimetres between rows.

The feathers are attached singly to every aho in a complex geometric configuration reminiscent of earlier Hawaiian cloaks. The materials used were: flax fibre and kereru, kakariki, kaka and tui feathers.

94 RARE, PRE-TREATY OF WAITANGI, LAND ‘TRANSFER’, 1839 In 1839, William Barnard Rhodes (1807–1878) entered into partnership with the Sydney firm Cooper and Holt. He left for New Zealand on the Eleanor in October 1839 to acquire vast amounts of land from the Maori.

The Treaty of Waitangi was being drafted at the same time. Taking supplies of guns and tobacco, he travelled to New Zealand attempting to secure deeds that eventually purported to give title to nearly two million acres in both islands. The document offered what can be considered both shameful and ridiculous. Mr William Barnard Rhodes attempted to secure 256,000 acres, the Waikanae Block, in exchange for 150 pounds sterling, supplied in arms, ammunition, tobacco and various merchandise. Many of Mr Rhodes’ land claims from this period were disallowed by the Lands Claims Commission following the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. A fascinating reflection of the times is the use of selfillustrated moko by the signatories; the moko was a powerful signifier of personal identity. Chiefs ‘A’ready and Tuanini and marks of Te Ropera alias Robulla, Eko of Eiko and Rangihero are self-evident.

The document reads: “To all Chieftains and others of New Zealand and to all Christian People we ‘A’ready & Tuanini, Chiefs of New Zealand send Greeting Know Ye that we the said ‘A’ready & Tuanini for and in consideration of the sum of one Hundred and Fifty pounds sterling supplied to us in Arms, Ammunition, Tobacco and various merchandize to me in hand paid and delivered by Daniel Cooper of London, Merchant, James Holt of Sydney, Merchant, and William Barnard Rhodes of Sydney, master mariner before and at the time of the sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof we do hereby acknowledge we the said ‘A’ready & Tuanini have granted, bargained, sold aliened, enfeoffed and confirmed by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, alien, enfeoff and confirm unto the said Daniel Cooper, James Holt and William Barnard Rhodes, heirs and assigns for ever. Offers a refined orthodox style; each end terminates with utilitarian barb design. Form is accentuated by fashioned detailing at the lower apex of the hook. 223 CASED HUIA BIRD Male huia bird in good condition perched on a branch in a glass display.

The huia is one of New Zealand’s best known extinct birds because of its bill shape, its sheer beauty, and special place in Maori culture and oral tradition. The bird was regarded by Maori as tapu (sacred), and the wearing of its skin or feathers was reserved for people of high status. The huia was a bird of deep metallic, bluish-black plumage with a greenish iridescence on the upper surface, especially around the head. The tail feathers were unique among endemic birds. Huia were hunted to obtain their long, striking tail feathers for locally fashionable hat decorations.

The second major cause of extinction was the widespread deforestation

of the lowlands of the North Island by settlers to create pasture for agriculture. Most of these forests were ancient, ecologically complex primary forests, and huia were not able to survive in regenerating secondary forests. The last confirmed sighting of a huia was on 28 December 1907 in the Tararua Ranges. Further credible sightings near Wellington were reported until 1922 and in Te Urewera National Park in the early 1960s.

REFERENCE Hori Paraone, the celebrated folk art carver of Kawakawa, Auckland was born at the turn of the 20th century and was tribally connected with Te Arawa. He was a highly regarded orator and expert in traditional Maori history and culture. Pataone began carving relatively late in life and his first important undertaking with the Maori church at Kawakawa Bay. Maori Folk Art, Alan Taylor, Publisher, Century Hutchinson, 1988, pp 67 – 70.

333 PRISTINE NAVAJO BLANKET Densely woven woollen blanket with traditional Navajo geometric patterning in red, blue, black and white. Owned by Frances Gillmor, novelist, folklorist and anthropologist whose studies were mainly focused in Mexico and the American Southwest. Gillmor co-wrote the book ‘Traders to the Navajos - The Wetherills of Kayenta’, 1934. A copy of this book is included in the lot. Gillmor collected weavings, and this pristine

INDONESIAN BATAK BULLET

HOLDERS Two superb ‘bullet holders’ of the Batak, Central Sumatra. These elongated containers with slightly flexible, ‘forked tongues’ were used to store self-cast lead bullets for the early muzzleloader guns of the Batak. Each bearing a face on the wide, upper front. The larger holder has a wooden lid, also carved with typical Batak relief. This ‘bullet holder’ still has one lead bullet inside. With good patina.

CONDITIONS of sale for buyers 1. Bidding. The highest bidder shall be the purchaser subject to the auctioneer having the right to refuse the bid of any person.

Should any dispute arise as to the bidding, the lot in dispute will be immediately put up for sale again at the preceding bid, or the auctioneer may declare the purchaser, which declaration shall be conclusive. No person shall advance less at a bid than the sum nominated by the auctioneer, and no bid may be retracted.

2. Reserves. All lots are sold subject to the right of the seller or her/his agent to impose a reserve.

3. Registration. Purchasers shall complete a bidding card before the sale giving their own correct name, address and telephone number. It is accepted by bidders that the supply of false information on a bidding card shall be interpreted as deliberate fraud.

4. Buyer’s Premium. The purchaser accepts that in addition to the hammer or selling price Webb’s will apply a buyer’s premium of 15% for sales of Oceanic & African Art (unless otherwise stated), together with GST on such premiums.

5. Payment. Payment for all items purchased is due on the day of sale immediately following completion of the sale.

If full payment cannot be made on the day of sale a deposit of 10% of the total sum due must be made on the day of sale and the balance must be paid within 5 working days.

Payment is by cash, bank cheque or Eftpos. Personal and private cheques will be accepted but must be cleared before goods will be released. Credit cards are not accepted.

6. Lots sold as Viewed. All lots are sold as viewed and with all erros in description, faults and imperfections whether visible or not. Neither Webb’s nor its vendor are responsible for errors in description or for the genuineness or authenticity of any lot or for any fault or defect in it. No warranty whatsoever is made. Buyers proceed upon their own judgement.

Buyers shall be deemed to have inspected the lots, or to have made enquiries to their complete satisfaction, prior to sale and by the act of bidding shall be deemed to be satisfied with the lots in all respects.

7. Webb’s Act as Agents. They have full discretion to conduct all aspects of the sale and to withdraw any lot from the sale without giving any reason.

8. Collection. Purchases are to be taken away at the buyer’s expense immediately after the sale except where a cheque remains

uncleared. If this is not done Webb’s will not be responsible if the lot is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed.

Any items not collected within seven days of the auction may be subject to a storage and insurance fee. A receipted invoice must be produced prior to removal of any lot.

9. Licences. Buyers who purchase an item which falls within the provisions of the Protected Objects Act 1975 or the Arms Act 1958 cannot take possession of that item until they have shown to Webb’s a license under the appropriate Act. 10. Failure to make Payment. If a purchaser fails either to pay for or take away any lot, Webb’s shall without further notice to the purchaser, at its absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights or remedies it may have, be entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights or remedies: A. To issue proceeding against the purchaser for damages for breach of contract.

B. To rescind the sale of that or any other lot sold to the purchaser at the same or any other auction.

C. To resell the lot by public or private sale.

Any deficiency resulting from such resale, after giving credit to the purchaser for any part payment, together with all costs incurred in connection with the lot shall be paid to Webb’s by the purchaser. Any surplus over the proceeds of sale shall belong to the seller and in this condition the expression ‘proceeds of sale’ shall have the same meaning in relation to a sale by private treaty as it has in relation to a sale by auction.

D. To store the lot whether at Webb’s own premises or elsewhere at the sole expense of the purchaser and to release the lot only after the purchase price has been paid in full plus the accrued cost of removal storage and all other costs connected to the lot.

E. To charge interest on the purchase price at a rate 2% above Webb’s bankers’ then current rate for commercial overdraft facilities, to the extent that the price or any part of it remains unpaid for more than seven days from the date of the sale.

F. To retain possession of that or any other lot purchased by the purchaser at that or any other auction and to release the same only after payment of money due.

Where any lot purchased is held by Webb’s pending i. clearance of funds by the purchaser or ii. completion of payment after receipt of a deposit, the lot will be held by Webb’s as bailee for the vendor, risk and title passing to the purchaser immediately upon notification of clearance of funds or upon completion of purchase. In the event that a lot is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed before title is transferred to the purchaser, the purchaser shall be entitled to a refund of all monies paid to Webb’s in respect of that lot, but shall not be entitled to any compensation for any consequent losses howsoever arising.

11. Bidders deemed Principals. All bidders shall be held personally and solely liable for all obligations arising from any bid, including both ‘telephone’ and ‘absentee’ bids. Any person wishing to bid as agent for a third party must obtain written authority to do so from Webb’s prior to bidding.

12. ‘Subject Bids’. Where the highest bid is below the reserve and the auctioneer declares a sale to be ‘subject to vendor’s consent’ or words to that effect, the highest bid remains binding upon the bidder until the vendor accepts or rejects it. If the bid is accepted there is a contractual obligation upon the bidder to pay for the lot.

13. Sales post auction or by private treaty.

The above conditions shall apply to all buyers of goods from Webb’s irrespective of the circumstances under which the sale is negotiated.
