today’s creative landscape; contemporary art, contemporary and modern design, glass, ceramics and objects presented within a single session. What is notable in recent times is an expansion towards traditional craft application being recognised by the fine arts community of curators and collectors. Equally the parameters of industrial design has shifted with a new wave of designers crossing the boundaries between engineer, designer and artist, taking an artist’s approach to both function and form. It makes sense that people who enjoy the visual arts would also extend their aesthetic sensibility across the breadth of the creative disciplines including architecture, industrial and homeware design and jewellery. Today’s contemporary collector does not appear to be so interested in isolating processes, and there also appears to be a growing recognition that good design may very well go through a valid artistic process just as much as fine art is free to apply design processes and disciplines. With the traditional delineations of art practice being creatively bridged within an amalgamated landscape of fine art, graphic design, film, illustration, web design, photography, visual effects, animation, graffiti, motion graphics, stop motion and industrial design, Webb’s is pleased to be offering an overview of some of the exceptionally talented local and international artists and designers who continue to explore the diverse and exciting world that brings together art and design. What links the art-works and many of the objects in this catalogue is the high quality of their making. Mixing up traditional fine art materials and concepts with industrial art materials and methods, it is apparent that traditional painting practice and photography sits comfortably alongside cast-glass, sculpture, lighting design and furniture making. Many works are constructed by artisans with a shared understanding of materials. They are makers of artworks who

that many artists today are well versed across a range of technical practices. This can be attributed, partly, to our modern art institutions who now offer a vast range of technical curriculums that in turn provide the creative practitioner the knowledge and networks to mix their genres of practice and influences. Paintings such as Tony de Lautour’s + - (lot 40 ) are viewed in context with Stephen Bambury’s “The Object is Dematerialised” (lot 56). Both works share an interest in basic compositional structure, but their approach to materials could hardly be more different. The slick surface of the Bambury contrasts sharply with the organic surface of the de Lautour. Younger artists such as Eve Armstrong and Seung Yul Oh use the found object as a binding interest. Whether they are collaging found items, or painting on the surface of a found filing tray, everyday items are transformed. The context in which the objects are displayed encourages a shift of perspective from the viewer. Within the milieu of the catalogue, the context and proximity of art and design encourages the viewer to make connections across works and practices throughout the catalogue. It is a deliberate ploy to encourage new ways of viewing creative processes and to suggest new ways of collecting, playfully ignoring the strict hierarchies that once dominated the art world. We hope you’ll agree that the selection of art works and objects in this catalogue bring a fresh and stimulating approach to the presention of contemporary art and design. Exhibited Southern Cross Gallery 1989. Subtitled Fruit Whip, flooortiles (sic) on particleboard and photocopies, epoxy resin and fibreglass cloth on wallpaper (Unit I) 1989 on original artist’s label affixed verso. Since the 1980s Merylyn Tweedie has gone through various changes of persona, an indication of her wish to avoid becoming a commodified name and to put the emphasis on her art. She is currently known as a member of the art-making co-operative et al. Her work during the period 1986 – 1990 was concerned with feminist issues. The Fruit Whip Set is one of a number of similar pieces examining elements of women’s lives in the 1950s. As we all now know (or are obliged to believe) women in that period were expected by the conventions of society to stay at home and look after hearth, husband and family. The artist evokes the kitchen by the use of the background floor tiles, and the perceived pressures to conform emerge from fragments of Xeroxed and enlarged excerpts from Arthur Mee’s domestic encyclopaedia. These are drowned in a messy resinous goo, symbolic perhaps of a housewife trapped like a fly on old-fashioned flypaper – or perhaps calling to mind newspaper placed under an oven to catch escaping fat. The enigmatic presentation and the crumpled forms are early evidence of Tweedie’s fondness for rough facture and finish and a sense of unease, that typify the artist’s later large-scale installations. Meadowlark is the personal outlet for two talented young designers who take their craft seriously enough to produce long lasting, precious jewellery for others to treasure. Claire Hammon is a self educated, uninhibited designer of much. In her late teens, early twenties she created and grew a successful street wear label into the solid brand Urchin. The sale of this in 2004 allowed her to launch fully into her passion for graphic design. She now runs a studio that holds a solid portfolio of magazine, textile, graphic and web design work.Greg is a trained visual artist who turned his hand to mastering the craft of jewellery design and construction. He has worked on signature range’s for brands such as Huffer and also creates stunning one off pieces for private clients wanting personal, memorable wedding jewellery. Meadowlark was created to complement the talents of both Claire and Greg. They work together on all aspects of the design process and prototyping and hand make every piece from their Grey Lynn studio. Their ultimate aim of producing high end, fashion and art based jewellery is reflected in their growing market and customer loyalty. www.meadowlark.co.nz

CONDITIONS of sale for buyers 1. Bidding: The highest bidder shall be the purchaser subject to the auctioneer having the right to refuse the bid of any person. Should any dispute arise as to the bidding the lot in dispute will be immediately put up for sale again at the preceding bid or the auctioneer may declare the purchaser which declaration shall be conclusive. No person shall advance less at a bid than the sum nominated by the auctioneer and no bid may be retracted. 2. Reserves. All lots are sold subject to the right of the seller or his agent to impose a reserve.

c. To resell the lot by public or private sale. Any deficiency resulting from such resale after giving credit to the purchaser for any part payment together with all costs incurred in connection with the lot shall be paid to Webb’s by the purchaser. Any surplus over the proceeds of sale shall belong to the seller and in this condition the expression “proceeds of sale” shall have the same meaning in relation to a sale by private treaty as it has in relation to a sale by auction.

3. Registration. Purchasers shall complete a bidding card before the sale giving their own correct name address and telephone number. It is accepted by bidders that the supply of false information on a bidding card shall be interpreted as deliberate fraud.

d. To store the lot whether at Webb’s own premises or elsewhere at the sole expense of the purchaser and to release the lot only after the purchase price has been paid in full plus the accrued cost of removal storage and all other costs connected to the lot.

4. Buyers’ Premium. The purchaser accepts that in addition to the hammer or selling price Webb’s will apply a buyer’s premium of 15 % of the hammer price (unless otherwise stated) together with GST on such premium, which combined sum shall be the total purchase price.

e. To charge interest on the purchase price at a rate 2% above Webb’s bankers’ then current rate for commercial overdraft facilities to the extent that the price or any part of it remains unpaid for more than seven days from the date of the sale.

5. Payment. Payment for all items purchased is due on the day of sale immediately following completion of the sale.

f. To retain possession of that or any other lot purchased by the purchaser at that or any other auction and to release the same only after payment of money due.

If full payment cannot be made on the day of sale a deposit of 10% of the total sum due must be made on the day of sale and the balance must be paid within 5 working days. Payment is by cash, bank (cashiers) cheque or Eftpos. Personal and private bank cheques will be accepted but must be cleared before delivery of goods will be given. Credit cards are not accepted. 6. Lots sold as Viewed. All lots are sold as viewed and with all errors to description faults and imperfections whether visible or not. Neither Webb’s nor its vendor are responsible for errors of description or for the genuineness or authenticity of any lot or for any fault or defect in it and make no warranty whatever. Buyers proceed upon their own judgement. Buyers shall be deemed to have inspected the lots or to have made enquiries to their complete satisfaction prior to sale and by the act of bidding shall be deemed to be satisfied with the lots in all respects. 7. Webb’s Act as Agents. They have full discretion to conduct all aspects of the sale and to withdraw any lot from the sale without giving any reason. 8. Collection.
