L.905mm. D.1000mm. H.660mm. $30,000 - $40,000 Marc Newson is one of the most accomplished and influential designers of his generation. In a career spanning a little over twenty years he has managed to carve out a distinct design identity in a competitive and critical international market. His work is known for its bio-morphic futuristic vision and technically rigorous approach to design. Newson grew up by the beaches in early 1960’s Sydney, in an Australia that he claims was a country without a local design tradition. This he believed to be an advantage, ‘coming from Australia and studying jewellery and sculpture, my design was self taught and instinctive’. * (Designing Modern Britain – Design Museum Exhibition 2006) This lack of design tradition allowed him to look at design with fresh eyes, enabling him the freedom to create his signature style which would ultimately have a wide international appeal. Not long after graduating from art school he began to work on his break-through piece of

South Wales in 1988 commissioned Newson to create a chair for an international travelling exhibition called ‘The House of Fiction: domestic blueprints in wood’. Curated by Craig Bremner, the exhibition was intended to encourage interaction between crafts practice and industry. The result of this was the ‘Wood Chair’ which also exhibited at the 1988 Milan Furniture Fair to wide acclaim. Created that year was another important Newson design, the ‘Embryo’ chair. The ‘WoodChair’ further refined the hourglass shape of the ‘Embryo’ to a simple almost abstract, double curve form. Although not originally designed for series production, the success of the chair at the international exhibition meant efforts to produce it for the wider market were begun. Lot 268 is one of two prototypes made of steam bent celery top pine by a factory in Launceston, Tasmania that produced the first commercial models of the ‘Wood Chair’ for Marc Newson. This was an incredibly prolific and productive period for Newson and also a watershed in terms of his international appeal.
