In 1964, he established the Waimea Pottery in Richmond near Nelson. There, Laird trained a generation of potters, including Royce McGlashen, Darryl Robertson, John and Anne Crawford, and his son Paul. Laird was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for services to pottery in 1984. From his collection, we are honoured to offer star pieces by his contemporaries Mirek Smisek and Len Castle along with some from international potters including works by Michael Cardew and Dame Lucie Rie.
Len Castle Branch Pot, Achieved $12,000 + Buyers Premium Cover: Lot 39. Lucie Rie, Coffee Service $4,000 - $6,000 BUYER’S PREMIUM A buyer’s premium of 15% will be charged on all items in the sale. GST (15%) is payable on the buyer’s premium.
Other international potters featured in the sale include Jeff Oestreich and Rudi Verspille; the works of these two were purchased from The Fletcher Challenge Ceramics Awards. From a private Christchurch collection, we are offering a superb array of hanging forms by Len Castle including a large, textured torpedo with impressed decoration. Two other significant
items in the sale are large, saltglazed floor pots by Roy Cowan. Both are museum-quality pieces: one has a band of incised floral decoration and the other an incised decoration of windows on Wellington. As always, we like to promote the rare and unusual and in this sale we are delighted to offer a rare stoneware chess set by Mirek Smisek and a complete house lot of door handles made by Peter Stichbury, which will be sold in group lots. Other potters’ work in this sale includes that of Graeme Storm, Estelle Martin, Chester Nealie, Peter Algar, Pamella Annsouth, Richard Parker and Dame Doreen Blumhardt. Our next specialist ceramics sale is scheduled for November. I look forward to hearing from you to discuss consignment or current market trends.
