Jason AdcockState Farm Focused on Your Financial Security Story by Melissa McCance Photos by Synergy Studios
Insurance. We all have it, but how many of us really understand it? Too many people buy their policies and then renew them year after year without paying much attention or considering whether or not changes are needed. Jason Adcock of State Farm Insurance in Hillsdale feels this is a critical mistake that can endanger your financial security. Because he is committed to helping his customers make sound financial decisions, Jason runs his agency according to his business’s guiding principle: “Insure today to ensure tomorrow.” Raised in Ypsilanti, Jason’s first job was being a “gopher” for his father’s construction business. “I paid taxes at 12,” laughs Jason. He continued to work for his dad through high school and became acquainted with the Hillsdale area when his parents built a home on Lake Wilson and the family began spending summers there. Jason didn’t find a clear career choice during college and worked full-time for his father after graduation. His father’s familiarity with insurance adjusters through the construction industry moved him to encourage Jason to give insurance a try. Jason started with State Farm in auto insurance, then moved to Nebraska where he continued with auto claims for a few years. After that, he changed to homeowners handling a variety of claim types. From there, Jason moved to Cincinnati to be closer to his family in Michigan. While there, he did exterior claims and then large loss claims. Over time, Jason acquired a number of insurance designations which indicate 10
he has completed advanced education in specific insurance subject areas. It was during the process of the insurance designations that Jason grew to love insurance and also became very interested in helping people understand how to choose the best coverage for their situations. His favorite part of the job is sitting down for one-on-one meetings to review policies and coverage. People can be over- or underinsured or perhaps things need to be rearranged to fit their financial needs better. “Everything about insurance, in my opinion, boils down to your financial situation and protecting your finances because that’s what it is—financial protection. I think of it more as risk management,” explains Jason. “I don’t call myself an insurance agent. I am a risk management specialist.” Jason has found that people don’t always understand how to utilize their insurance in a cost-effective way. They latch on to a general guideline and stick with it even if it isn’t the best option for their situation. “One thing we see is people choosing higher deductibles on auto policies to get lower premiums. Yes, that works, but what if you don’t normally have enough cash on hand to cover that deductible? What are you going to do if you have an accident that does major damage to your car and your
“Everything about insurance, in my opinion, boils down to your financial situation and protecting your finances because that’s what it is—financial protection. I think of it more as risk management,” explains Jason. “I don’t call myself an insurance agent. I am a risk management specialist.” available cash won’t cover half your deductible? Sometimes it’s smarter and safer to pay more in premiums and carry a deductible you can always cover.” Jason’s primary concern is that people are taken care of, whether or not they’re doing business with him. He stresses that it’s essential to have regular, active conversations with your insurance agent to discuss if your coverage is still a good fit.
Jason Adcock-State Farm Insurance is located at 32 South Howell Street in Hillsdale, and you can reach them by calling 517-437-3364. Their web site URL is www. jasonsffamily.com, and you can also follow them on Facebook.
“It’s a financial decision, not an emotional one,” he says. “Your insurance should change with you over time as your life changes. What you need as a young, single adult is different from what you need when you’re married with minor children and it’s different again for empty-nesters and retirees.” Jason and his staff can develop a comprehensive plan for their customers because of the depth of services available through his office. They offer auto, home, motorcycle, ATV, pet, renters, and business insurance as well as various life and health policies. In addition, Jason has his mortgage license. “By your late twenties, certainly by the time you’re into your thirties, you need to be thinking about planning for retirement, but a lot of people don’t. The sooner you start, the better chance you have of being able to enjoy a secure retirement,” he explains. First and foremost, Jason believes in educating people about insurance—what it is, how it works, and how best to protect your finances by using it correctly. He sums it up like this: “You need to understand your insurance. That empowers you. Be more intentional and active in your financial decisions.”

STRENGTH ...
The OTHER kind!
Hello my friends! Good to see you back within these pages. This issue I’m gonna talk about a different kind of strength, a kind that we teach both knowingly and unknowingly.
By James Campbell NSCA Certified Personal Trainer Owner, PRIME Fitness
Today’s world is … well, let’s just say, a different kind of place. I mean, as a society we’ve managed to create such an “I’m a victim” mentality, and personally, I struggle with it. In this society, it’s easier to just be herded around like sheep and go along to get along. Tag that up with the “everyone’s a winner” and the Marxist mentality and BAM! Here we are! Sorry, venting, I guess. Anyway, what does this have to do with being strong, right? A lot actually; let me explain. First, what we knowingly teach. As parents we’re responsible for raising our children to be self-reliant, successful, proud, many other things, and STRONG! With everything that’s going on in the world and things that have led us to this point, it’s more important than ever to ensure their futures are bright and that begins with teaching them to think for themselves and how exactly to do that.
14 20
We need to talk to them about how important it is to believe in themselves and how it’s one million percent okay to stand alone in that belief. That’s freakin’ STRONG right?! I mean, the courage that takes! But let’s be honest, as a whole we’re failing here. There’s the mentality that tells kids “everyone’s a winner, here’s your trophy.” THAT MISSES A VALUABLE LESSON!! The lesson of winning and losing and how your responses to both help shape your character. Unfortu-
nately, those lessons and responses aren’t always positive. That’s okay, too! As parents, it’s easy if everyone gets a trophy. I mean the kid’s happy, right? No need to worry any further about it. Doesn’t mean it’s right. Face the challenge, teach them the importance of these lessons and what they mean. More importantly, teach them how to fight. No, not fist fight (not wrong though, if for the right reasons and the right way). Teach them how to fight for what they want. After a loss, if they want to be better, they need to work harder to be better. Then the other side is winning with humility. I mean winning doesn’t mean that kid is a better person, doesn’t mean they’re better at the game. Just means they were better at that game on that day. Now the unknowingly ... pretty easy, right? Lead by example—you can’t be amazing at teaching your child to be strong and then when you have the opportunity to put your money where your mouth is you crumble. Teaching responsibility? Then step up and admit it when you screw up and do what you can to make it right, even if it could cost you big time. And, that includes times when you owe that apology and restitution to your kids. That is an example they’ll remember! I’m really running out of space here, so I’ve gotta dial this in before Marlanea and the Simply Hers team force me to get my own publication. In the end it’s simple: make the difficult decisions, teach the tough lessons, and lead by example. Let’s turn this around and make this country strong! MUSCLE UP … live fit!

Ohio) in Lima, Ohio. While he was going to school, he started part-time at Chase Brass and Copper Company in Montpelier, Ohio, moving to fulltime in 1992. How he transitioned from full-time at the factory to full-time exhaust work involved some serious thinking during a spell of downtime. While off work in 2016 to recover from an injury, Renny realized that he was done with being at the factory. After meeting with the building owner of his present location, Renny moved the business there within a couple of months. He’s happy in the role of small business owner and in being independent. Renny knows he fills a need and says that word of mouth keeps him plenty busy. “I’ve always loved to build things—making things out of bits and pieces. There’s something really satisfying about looking at what’s needed and knowing I can bend the tubing exactly right and that it will fit perfectly.” One great reason to take your exhaust problems to Renny is cost. If just one section of the exhaust system is bad, Renny can take that out, replace it, and weld the system back together, custom bending any section of tubing that is needed. This saves considerable money over having to purchase a larger, premade unit that includes sections you don’t need to have replaced.

His goal is to give everybody the same quality of work, the same effort, at a fair price:
by Melissa McCance
“The icing on the cake for me is when the job’s over, the customer starts the vehicle . . . and they smile. Doesn’t matter if it’s a younger guy who wants the big roar or someone who’s happy the car isn’t making that racket anymore. I love it when they’re happy.”
QUALITY WORK THAT SAVES YOU MONEY!
No one wants to waste money, and it’s always frustrating when you have to buy an entire new thing when just part of it isn’t working. Renny Schrom understands this and can definitely help if your problem involves the exhaust system on your vehicle. As the owner of RS Custom Exhaust in Hillsdale, Renny can custom build what’s needed to fix your exhaust and get your vehicle back on the road. Not everyone jumps into a new line of work spontaneously, but Renny’s always had multiple irons in the fire. During the 28 years that he worked in an Ohio brass foundry, Renny would have two or three jobs going on the side. He knew another man in the area who did custom exhaust work and since there was always a one- or two-week waiting list for that business, Renny figured there was room for someone else. In 1999, he purchased an exhaust tube bender and hoist, got them set up in a building he already owned, filed for his DBA, and got started.
“I’m entirely self-taught,” says Renny. “No one ever showed me a thing.” He started doing exhaust work at his home on Bird Lake Road and then moved the business when he purchased a new house on the same road. Renny opened in his current location on Vera Drive in 2017. A native of Hillsdale County, Renny grew up around Bird Lake and graduated from Pittsford High School. After graduation, he attended NBC Tech (now the University of Northwestern

Business Spotlight
Broad Street Auto Service, LLC— Continuing the Family Tradition By Melissa McCance Bryan Jeffrey, owner of Broad Street Auto Service, LLC, must have engine oil in his blood. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather and his father Tom, Bryan is the third generation of his family to be in the auto repair business, something of which he is rightfully proud. And, the fourth generation—his son Chase—has joined him in the business.
Broad Street Auto Service will perform all automotive maintenance and repairs aside from front end alignments and transmission rebuilds. Bryan is certified to do alignments but doesn’t have space for an alignment rack. As for transmission rebuilds, he feels that the increasing complexity of those systems has made it more of a specialty service.
Although he started in HVAC, it wasn’t long before Bryan went to work for his father at his automotive repair shop. He operated his own place in Jonesville for six years and then relocated the business to his home west of Hillsdale for a time. When the current location at Broad and Hallett streets became available, Bryan leased the property and opened there in February of 2011.
After almost 30 years in the profession, Bryan has seen automotive technology change dramatically. He feels that he was fortunate to be in it when front wheel drive, fuel injection, and HEI ignition were just beginning to come on strong. Being familiar with these technologies from the beginning gave him a solid base for understanding how they have evolved.
That long family tradition includes more than just knowing cars inside and out. There are some strong family values that guide how Bryan runs his business. “I work off the values instilled by my dad that I’m sure were instilled in him by my grandfather. I want to do the best possible job for my clients so they’re safe and happy.”
One thing that Bryan feels sets him apart is that he wants to educate his customers about their cars. He explains how he came to his diagnosis of the problem, how their cars work, how the subsystems function, and how he will fix the problem. By being open and upfront about what’s wrong and what he needs to do, he hopes to establish trust with his customers.
During his years of doing car maintenance and repair, Bryan has gone above and beyond for his customers many times, whether it’s providing a ride, doing repairs outside of regular business hours, or even—under special circumstances— performing repairs at no charge. One day a young mother from Lenawee County with three sick children in the car pulled in and said her car was acting up. Bryan diagnosed the problem quickly and repaired it on the spot with a part. When she asked what she owed him, he told her not to worry but just to get those kids safely home. “She wrote a really nice post on the Facebook page the next day, thanking me.”

“Everyone knows the stereotype of the crooked auto mechanic, and that’s something we have to fight every day. Gaining someone’s trust is one thing—maintaining it is another—and that is something I strive hard for. I learned from my dad that the best advertising is word of mouth.” Broad Street Auto Service, LLC, is located at 166 S. Broad St. in Hillsdale. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and you can reach them by phone at 517-610-5182.

Life is the Berries The Toothpick Principle I changed my perspective. A mindset, an established set of attitudes held by a person, can be referred to it as ethos, mentality, behaviorism, disposition, frame of mind, temperament, sensibility, or psyche. By Laura Loveberry Elementary School Assembly Author/Speaker, Inspirational Speaker Women’s Retreats/Conferences, Caricature Artist
It’s a choice. My husband sometimes leaves a toothpick on the table by his comfortable chair. In the morning, I used to grunt and roll my eyes when I took care of his toothpick. In the past, I might grumble a lecture about when he gets up, he could throw away the used, slimy pick. Today, I reflect on Mark. He works ten- to twelve-hour days. He comes home and fixes projects around the house. He loves God and loves people well. He maintains a remarkable work ethic. He’s a good family man. He’s a blessing in my life I need to appreciate. I cock my head sideways and ponder. The Bible states, “Do everything without grumbling or arguing,” (Philippians 2:14 NIV). I determine, instead of nagging about the toothpick, I shall think of it as a message he leaves me saying he loves me. Every used wooden pick left around the house is now his secret code message projecting his love. I reconsider the toothpick. My mindset shifts. It’s romantic. We laugh about it. I smile and throw away the toothpick this morning with a hop in my step because … he loves me. I grin and twirl about my morning routine with a dance. Attitude changes everything.

Live Fit!
If you’re looking for a well-equipped fitness facility that offers a number of training options, PRIME Fitness is the place for you. Owner James Campbell wants to make it possible for everyone to be stronger and healthier. PRIME is the most complete gym in the area, offering free weights, high-quality resistance machines, and Strongman training equipment. One great, affordable option at PRIME is the open gym membership. For just $34.99 per month, open gym members have full use of the facility seven days a week from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. Open gym members access the gym by paying a onetime, refundable deposit of $25 for a key fob that opens the electronic door lock, allowing them to plan their workout schedule any time during the 19 hours of access. James is on-site most of the day and can answer questions or give form critique if someone wants guidance. PRIME also has one-on-one, twoperson, and small group training. Sessions run one hour and current training rates are $310 for 10 sessions of one-on-one, $250 per person for 10 sessions with two, and $200 per person for 10 sessions with three or more. Small groups have all the positives of a class—camaraderie, friendly competition, building each other up, and accountability—without the negatives. A large class means less individual attention, programming has to be geared to the average level of the group, and an absence of dynamic programming like barbell squats and deadlifts.
In addition to open gym and personal training, James offers remote training through the versatile True Coach app. With True Coach, clients can train at any gym in the country, and trainer and client can easily interact through an in-app messaging system so there’s no need to switch back and forth between the app and another messaging program. James designs personalized workout programs complete with specified reps and sets, and the app provides a huge library of videos showing the exercises. If what he programs isn’t in the library, James is able to upload his own videos. As the client uses the app, it tracks the exercise history noting weights and reps from previous workouts so the client can easily review what was done. Clients can upload their own videos for form and technique critiques. There are two choices for clients who are interested in the True Coach option. Dual enrollment provides some one-on-one training with James plus the remote programming through the app. This dual enrollment gives clients a price break and is presently $50 per month. For those opting to use full remote programming, the rate is currently $100 per month. Both of these require a six-month commitment. No matter what your age, no matter what your fitness level, James Campbell and PRIME Fitness can help you in your journey to a healthier, stronger self. The studio is located at 96 E. Carleton in Hillsdale, and you can contact James at 517817-6475.

ANGLER’S CORNER What you need to land a BIG ONE.
CONTAINER
You will need a container -- called a tackle box -- for your fishing gear. Tackle boxes come in many sizes and shapes. Some look like toolboxes, others like small cabinets, and many look like soft lunch bags or backpacks. Your tackle box should have all the things you need for fishing such as hooks, sinkers, bobbers or floats and lures.
HOOKS
There are many kinds of hooks, but the basic fishhook is shaped like the letter “J”. • At the top of the “J” is the eye (or hole), where the line is attached. At the other end of the hook is the point, which is part of the barb. The barb helps hold a fish on the hook when it’s caught. The main body of the hook is called the shank. • Some hooks have multiple barbs and points. Other hooks are made in unusual shapes and are designed to hold specific baits, such as smelt hooks or egg hooks. A jig is similar to a basic hook, but it has a weight attached to it by the eye so you don’t need a sinker.
SINKERS
Also called weights, sinkers come in many shapes and sizes. • Some sinkers are simple, round balls with a slice on one side -- called split shots. You put the line through the slice and pinch the sinker right on the line above the hook. There are also sinkers that slide on the line, called cinch sinkers. • Pyramid and bell sinkers are used at the end of the line when the hooks are higher on the line. Use
26
only as large a sinker as you need to keep your bait on the bottom. Deeper water and strong currents require heavier sinkers.
BOBBERS
These serve two purposes: • They control the depth of your bait and can alert you when a fish is biting. • When the bobber goes down, that’s your signal to set the hook!
ARTIFICIAL LURES
• Artificial lures are designed to look like the real thing -- minnows, frogs, worms or even insects. • Artificial lures come in many shapes, sizes and colors. Some of them float on the surface and are called topwaters. Others, mostly those designed to look like baitfish or crayfish, float on the surface at rest, but dive when you reel them in. These are often called crankbaits. Topwaters and crankbaits are both called plugs. • Other lures, like spoons, jigs and spinners, will sink to the bottom. The angler controls their depth by changing the speed of the retrieve. These lures can be fished anywhere from the bottom to just below the surface. • Hand tied flies are often used by fly fishing anglers who are trying to match their bait to what the fish are eating that day. Dry flies float on the surface and mimic either emerging insects like mayflies or “terrestrials” -- bugs that usually live on land (like crickets) but sometimes fall in the water. Wet flies sink and are used to imitate frogs, leeches, insect larvae or macroinvertebrates that live underwater permanently or until they emerge as adult insects.
THE BROOK TROUT— Michigan’s official state fish.
“Brookies” have a long, streamlined body with a large mouth. They can be olive color, blue-gray, or black with a silvery white belly and markings that look like worms along the side. They have red spots sometimes surrounded by bluish halos on their sides. The lower fins have a white front edge with black and the rest of the fin is reddish orange. Brook trout live in most areas of the state including creeks, streams, rivers, lakes and in the Great Lakes. They like clean, cool and clear streams that are about 57 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Brook trout live about six years and often grow to be 7-9 inches long in streams and up to 25 inches in the Great Lakes. They like to hide under jutting rocks and logs and they don’t move around much, but they do eat a lot! Brook trout eat zooplankton, crustaceans, worms, fish, and insects. Anglers like to fish for brook trout for food and for enjoyment. To catch one for yourself, try using worms, crickets, grasshoppers, wet or dry flies, spoons, or spinners.

CARBS are NOT your enemy! By Melissa McCance
These days, carbohydrates are often portrayed as an evil monster that’s making you sluggish, overweight, and miserable. The truth is that carbs—like fats and protein—are an essential macronutrient in your diet and their proper use can provide a number of benefits. Carbs are the main fuel for our bodies and provide the energy for daily activities and simply living. They are also the primary fuel for our brains and nervous systems. When we eat carbs, our body breaks them down into sugar, which can be converted into energy straight from our bloodstream or stored as glycogen in our muscles and liver to convert into energy later.1 Inadequate carbohydrate intake can have some interesting—and unexpected—side effects. People who regularly eat below the recommended number of carbs per day are likely to have issues with an unhappy digestion (carb-rich foods are often also fiber-rich foods), an overall feeling of weakness, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, moodiness and irritability (carbs increase our production of the mood-balancing hormone serotonin), and “paint thinner breath” because the body must shift to breaking down fat for energy which produces ketones that affect the breath. If you do higherintensity exercise, a lack of carbs can mean frustrating and disappointing workouts. Now, that being said, there certainly are smart and not-so-smart carb choices, so don’t consider this your go-ahead to gorge on cake, potato chips, and ice cream. The best sources of carbohydrates are unprocessed or minimally processed things like vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and legumes. These sources will provide not only carbs but are also excellent sources of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. So, yes, load up on all those vegetables you know you should be eating. Opt for whole fruit over fruit juice, and think beyond the bread aisle for whole grains.
Things like oatmeal, quinoa, and farro are good options. And, beans are great for fiber and carbs. Obviously, the next question is how many carbohydrates should someone eat per day? A good starting point for your carbs is 45% of your daily caloric intake and that figure will vary based on activity level, energy requirements, and other individual needs. Carbs provide four calories per gram, which means that someone eating 2,000 calories per day should start at about 225 grams of quality carbs per day. If you want to fine-tune your best carb levels, you can discuss your diet with a dietitian or nutritionist for personalized advice. So, the bottom line? Don’t run from carbs. You need them for energy and brain health. (Actually, if your diet is too low in this nutrient, you won’t have the energy to run!)
