Ask The Expert

Everyone stop, take a moment, and congratulate yourself. WE MADE IT THROUGH 2021! And, I don’t know about you, but I don’t think it was easy. After 2020, there was a general feeling of optimism about 2021, because it had to better, right? Right? Well, it was, kind of, but it didn’t seem to be as good as most of us were hoping it would be.

By Rob Shewman

Now, here we are at the beginning of 2022. A new year. A chance to plan and make some thoughtful changes for the better in our lives. Maybe we’re going to try being better in our relationships, whether it’s as a partner, parent, child, or friend. Perhaps this is the year when we’ll take a chance and begin making a long-held dream come true, whether it’s starting a business, getting more education or training, or learning a new skill we’ve always wanted to try. Could 2022 be the year we FINALLY drop the extra pounds and get in shape? The year’s waiting. What will you make of it? Marlanea McGraw Owner/Publisher

Continuing our theme from last year, this first issue of the new year has a theme of self-care. We want all of you to figure out how to carve out a few moments—or longer—for yourself. No, it’s not selfish, and no, the world won’t fall apart if you aren’t at everyone’s beck and call 24/7. It’s a fact that women who never devote time to refreshing their spirits and resting their bodies risk depression and burnout. Feel guilty about taking time for self-care? Well, think about it. If you were the people around you, would you rather be with the happier, calmer, better balanced, more patient you . . . or the opposite? If you love reading, check out this issue’s book reviews for some suggestions and tuck yourself away for some quality reading time. There’s another article with great ideas for free or very low-cost suggestions for “me” time, and profiles of a couple of stores that could become favorites. Please take a look at our ads, too, because these faithful advertisers provide the support that allows us to keep going! We are beyond grateful for their faith in us and for how they continue to stand behind us. Wishing everyone the very best for 2022!

Cover Feature

It’s funny how we can be so sure of the path we want to follow in life, and then something will happen that turns us in a completely different direction. Nurse practitioner Reanna Pickerign of Hillsdale Health & Wellness experienced just such a shift, and she couldn’t be happier about it.

“I was pre-law, I thought my whole life I’d be a lawyer. Then I met a nursing assistant and she was telling me that she took blood pressures and drew blood and talked to patients, and I thought it sounded like the coolest thing ever. I said, I’m through with pre-law— I WANT TO BE A NURSING ASSISTANT!” Reanna completed that training and began as a nursing assistant, and then, as she phrases it, “I just kept climbing.” She received her undergraduate degree from Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio, and continued on to graduate school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She is now a certified family nurse practitioner (FNP-C).

A SHIFT &

A NEW PATH A ROAD TO SELF-FULFILLMENT LED TO CARING FOR THE COMMUNITY. — By Melissa McCance—

During the final semester at Case Western, the students were allowed to choose what they would do. Reanna and a friend moved to California where she did hospice and palliative care, a field that she loved. At the time, she thought she would remain in California, but family ties pulled her back to the Midwest. “My sister started having babies, and I just missed them—I missed my whole family. So, I was initially looking at jobs near Cleveland, but I saw this listing for a job in Hillsdale because I had opened up the search to some parts of Michigan as well.” After making initial contact with the hospital, Reanna had a very favorable first impression.

She then Skyped with Dr. Ravi Yarid who owned Hillsdale Health & Wellness at the time and signed on for the position sight unseen. The shift to a rural setting was an adjustment at first, but one that she’s been happy to make. “I remember asking where the mall was. I had no idea that Target was so far!” she laughs. “I’d be prepaying for my gas at the station and everyone would ask me why I was doing that, that I didn’t have to. Everyone knew everybody in the stores, and they were just the nicest people I’d ever met in my life. Dr. Yarid would close for Fair Day, which was something I’d never heard of, and he’d close early on Halloween so the families could go trick-or-treating, and I thought, ‘This is just the best place ever.’” Reanna has now been with Hillsdale Health & Wellness for six years and is very enthusiastic about the practice. “I love that we see patients of all ages, and that we do primary care medicine as well as seeing acute walk-in cases. I can do the immediate, acute care and see results right then, but I can also partner with a family and take care of them throughout their lives.” When asked about areas of particular interest within the practice of medicine, Reanna listed mental health, pediatric and adolescent medicine, and palliative care. She does acknowledge that there are some challenges in rural medicine. Because of the extended hours offered at the clinic, there can be times when they’re still seeing patients and issuing prescriptions, but local pharmacies are closed. The same thing applies to changes in prescription formularies which can require some planning to ensure

patients are getting the most effective medication at a tolerable cost. Regarding future goals for the practice, Reanna says they’re looking at possibly expanding telehealth visits which are already available and a good option when there’s a lengthy line for walk-in patients and patients prefer not to wait in the parking lot that long. Also, she has discovered that not everyone realizes the clinic is open seven days a week, so she is hoping to increase awareness that care is accessible on any day. Something Reanna has recently undertaken is to partner with the University of Michigan School of Nursing as a preceptor for nurse practitioner and midwifery students. She said that many of these students have been more research-focused before they come to her and clinical experience is fairly new to them, but they’re all doing well with in the new setting. Reanna strives to develop their independence and to give them an understanding of the joys and challenges of rural health as small-town medicine is a first for them. Reanna’s personal life is well-grounded in Hillsdale as she lives here with her husband whom she married just this past October. They share their home with a beagle mix named Oliver and a boxer mix named Sophie.

Hillsdale Health & Wellness is located at 240 W. Carleton Road, Hillsdale, in the Kroger Plaza and the clinic is open from 10 to 6 every day. You can reach them by calling 517-437-7040.

It’s More Than Just a Store! By Melissa McCance

There’s “shopping” and then there’s “SHOPPING.” The first ensures we have necessities like food, laundry detergent, trash bags, etc. But the second . . . oh, that’s different! That kind of shopping is when you’re looking for a gift, on the hunt for that perfect finishing touch to a room you’re decorating, or perhaps just browsing in a favorite shop because simply being there is a pleasure. Birdie’s & Howell, the newest addition to Hillsdale’s downtown, is that kind of store. Owner Monique Sarles grew up in Jonesville and worked in the food industry for 20 years. When the pandemic hit, she decided it was time to shift gears and pursue something she’d wanted to do since her mid-20s: own a gift store. She discussed the idea with her husband Curt who was completely on board with the idea. The next step was finding a location! One space that interested her was already spoken for, but then she learned that the former Nash Drugs properties on Howell Street were available, and Monique purchased the side that had been the Hallmark store. Remodeling and renovating began, but, as everyone knows, those things don’t go quickly right now due to supply delays and shortages. While that was in progress, Monique began buying for the store, visiting trade markets, and deciding what to stock. The planned September opening didn’t take place until November 29, but what an opening it was! “It was a great day,” says Monique. “Everybody came in. I just put a Facebook post up saying, ‘I’m open.’ It’s amazing. And, it’s been great ever since!” Advance interest was also generated by the window sign saying the new store would be coming soon, and people were definitely curious about what it would be like. There was also curiosity about the name. Monique says many people have asked her how she came up with such an unusual one for her shop. “Birdie was my nickname growing up,” Center • Corner of Oak Margot V. Biermann Athletic

12

and College Streets

she explains. And, it has another special tie in that their granddaughter—the first grandchild—is named Birdie. Monique adds, “The Howell part is because I wanted to pull the community into the store and I want to do things for the community through the store.” She is planning to host community events at the shop like Christmas open houses and the popular gatherings known as “sip and shops.” Monique always envisioned the store as being more than just a place to shop. As someone who loves entertaining, she wanted it to be a place where people could find what they need to host family and friends. She’d also like to be known as a place to find that perfect gift for a loved one. “I want people to have fun here, to be excited to come in, browse, and shop,” she says. Birdie’s & Howell offers a wonderful selection from which to choose. In the home décor department, for example, you’ll find items from Napa, Demdaco, Nora Fleming, Willow Tree, and Corkcicle among others. Tableware, serving pieces, drinkware, wall art, accent pieces, and more are all available. There are seasonal pieces as well as beautiful things that are appropriate all year. Looking for a special sauce or ingredient to add character to your meals? Visit the shop and browse among offerings from Stonewall Kitchen, Captain Rodney’s, and Cherry Republic that will do the trick. There are also many packaged mixes from Country Home Creations to create sauces and dips that will let you offer something new without having to collect the necessary herbs and spices. On the upper level is where you’ll find the clothing section. Monique’s inventory includes but is definitely not limited to Liverpool, Scout and Aloha bags, and Coco+Carmen. She carries jeans, leggings, dresses, shirts, sweaters, shoes, and more, in casual and dressy styles. There are two comfortable dressing rooms so you can try before you buy. Accessorize with scarves and jewelry, including pieces from the popular Alex and Ani line. Along with the home décor and women’s departments, Monique has included a small gift section for men that she will be expanding in the future, a children’s department, and a section devoted to pet products. Come spring, she will be adding gardening items to help her customers welcome spring. Monique will also be featuring custom framing in the future. Jumping into being a store owner is something Monique describes as intense, sometimes overwhelming, but wonderful. “I have loved every minute of it. Even when I was scared, I still loved it. And, when everyone came pouring in the week we opened, I was so happy!” Shoppers should note that the store is accessible through the back door as well as through the front. If there aren’t open parking spots on Howell, you can park in the city lot behind the store and enter without having to walk around the building. Birdie’s & Howell is located at 28 N. Howell Street. Store hours are Monday through Friday from 10 to 6 and Saturdays from 9 to 3. You can reach them by phone at 517-964-2473 or by messaging through the Facebook page. The website is still under construction, so watch for that to be available.

RED As a woman, you may be acquainted with the RED DRESS EFFECT. It’s a scientifically proven phenomenon that a woman wearing red is perceived as more attractive and sexually appealing by men rather than those wearing other colors. During times when you want to look glamorous, confident, and sexy, add a touch of red to your outfit in the form of a dress, a skirt, pumps, scarves, or a simple bold red lipstick. With a red outfit, you can’t hide in the crowd. It’s the color to wear when you need to feel confident about yourself. This powerful color oozes with self-pride.

Exercise

AND THE MIND

By Jess Piper ACE CPT Senior Fitness Specialist Nutrition Specialist PRIME Fitness

Why do we work out? Have you ever really asked yourself that question? If you ask most people the common answers are to get in better shape, lose weight, tone up their muscles, and have more endurance to do daily activities. We all know exercise is great for the body, but what can exercise do for the mind? In this article, we will take a look at some of the positive benefits exercise can have on mental health. Mental health is so very important to our everyday life. We live in a climate where winters are long and the sun tends to go into hiding for long periods of time. This along with many other factors can cause a person to feel down or depressed. However, exercise can be a beneficial factor for your overall mental health. Did you know that many exercises from walking to resistance training can reduce symptoms of depression? Exercise is a natural mood

20

enhancer that releases a chemical in the body called endorphins. The release of this chemical, along with others can help relieve stress, pain, and improve your mood. The psychological and emotional benefits of being regularly active can help improve self-esteem and mental clarity. Although, we primarily look at exercise as a way to get our bodies in shape, we tend to forget the importance that exercise has on the mind as well. Exercise comes in many shapes and forms. The important thing is to pick an exercise program that works for you, so you know you will stick with it. In order to achieve your overall wellness goals, your mind and body need to work together. Remember, exercise can help you have a healthy mind and body, and when you feel good on the inside it shines through to the outside!

WINTER’S ITCH

By Kara Wilson, PA-C Hillsdale Medical Associates

It is that time of year again, and we are approaching the end of winter. And, these Michigan winters can take a toll on our skin. The cold and windy weather can be so harsh to the skin, and the dry air from the colder days can lead to your skin feeling very dry and itchy. Plus, the air in your home or workplace may also have decreased humidity due the increased use of all different kinds of heat. Whether it is just the furnace running more due to the cold or extra use of space heaters at your desk or house to keep you feeling warmer and cozier, these things can dry skin out, too. During these long winters, skin can start to become drier and flakier. You may feel itchier and even develop a rash that looks like small red bumps. Predominantly, the worst affected areas are on the legs, arms, and back. Typically, the face, scalp, hands, and feet are spared. The skin may feel rougher and the itching is often worse at night. These symptoms caused by dry skin from colder and more dry

22

air is known medically as Pruritus Hiemalis, or, more commonly, as Winter’s Itch. There are some home remedies and lifestyle changes that can be made to help relieve these symptoms. Using a water softener to make hard water less harsh on the skin for showers and baths can be beneficial. After showering, pat the skin dry instead of rubbing with the towel. Also, be sure to moisturize within minutes of getting out of the shower with a hydrating, non-fragranced cream and reapply as needed throughout the day. Changing the laundry detergent to a fragrancefree type may help as well. Vaporizers or humidifiers can aid with increasing the humidity level in the air at home or in work spaces. When skin gets really dry or itchy, sometimes taking a baking soda bath can be calming. If trying some of these things this winter have not helped, it may be best to see your primary care provider to evaluate your skin further and review more treatment options.

TELEPHONE TRAVELING COUPLE Sets Aim at Hillsdale By Lisa Barna

The following is the first of what will be a semi-regular feature in Simply Hers. Lisa and Andrew Barna have a unique way of exploring Michigan that we hope you will enjoy sharing in our pages! 24

Dart in hand, Andrew, my husband of eight years, took aim at our Michigan map, readying us for yet another adventure! The dart was planted just south of Hillsdale, a community we’ve never visited before. We stopped for gas after the drive, and started our Michigan travel tradition: playing “telephone.” Rules: 1. No Googling the town we’re going to. 2. We ask for one “can’t-miss” place. 3. We go to that suggestion no matter what. This game has allowed us to see some of the best places in Michigan that you’ll never find in a travel guide. We swear by it! A woman at the gas station said that every good Saturday morning starts at Jilly Beans and she was right! We instantly loved the atmosphere and the light streaming in through the large front windows as we enjoyed our coffees and small breakfast. Being at Jilly Beans was like getting a warm hug, very needed on a chilly October morning. Next, the staff recommended we go to Baw Beese to see the lake and park. While the day was a little chilly and the wind off the water was rough, the park made up for the weather. We walked along the shoreline and saw a couple picnicking under a pavilion. In the summer, this would absolutely be a blast.

The picnickers gave us our next suggestion: Hillsdale College. Both students raved about how much they loved living there, and we agreed that it was beautiful. The students also emphasized the beauty of the chapel and they didn’t undersell it. The chapel had huge glass lanterns above us, marble floors, and an arched roof. I could understand why these students were so passionate!

Home Decor • Handmade Furniture • Rickles Pickles • Candles Fashion Accessories • Specialty Soaps • Lotions • & More!

STOP. SHOP. ENJOY.

We asked college students where to eat and they recommended Finish Line Restaurant. When we arrived, we were shocked to see a line of people! We waited outside with the rest of the crowd, and ordered a little lunch. And while it was good, it was quite a wait. Next, we rushed downtown to catch the Hillsdale Farmers Market before it closed at 1pm. While there was a good variety of food and crafts, there were only about six vendors. We thought this was probably a combination of arriving just before closing and it being pretty late in the season. Next, we went to the Small Town Sweet Boutique. We were pulled in by the colored awning and cool logo, but what really impressed us was inside. Small Town Sweet Boutique is the cutest little candy shop! We picked up some affordable taffy with unique flavors and talked with the staff. The staff at Small Town Sweet Boutique said we can’t leave without going to Checker Records, and they were right. We loved the feel of the record store/coffee shop and the music was great. We weren’t as cool as the other patrons, but it was the most unique stop of the day. Checker Records staff suggested we go to MoseArt, and we loved checking out the eclectic art by local artists. This is the kind of place we would go to on our own, so we felt at home here. Our last stop of the day was Rough Draft, a coffee/cocktail bar. I have three words: yes, yes, YES! The vibe was incredible, the cocktails were delicious, and Andrew and I played Jenga while sipping a brew. Overall, we enjoyed our time in Hillsdale and will be back again. Downtown was super cute, everyone was nice and welcoming, and we got to see a variety of what they had to offer. We give Hillsdale an overall score of 4/5 stars.

Life is the Berries

“Unbiological” Sister Are you blessed with a soul sister?

By Laura Loveberry Elementary School Assembly Author/Speaker, Inspirational Speaker Women’s Retreats/Conferences, Caricature Artist

I am. My bestie protects my backside, loves my guts, empathizes with me, overlooks my weaknesses, praises my strengths, challenges my sin, laughs at my silliness, halts her life to help my crisis, sings beautifully when I sign-language songs, points me to love God and people, and stands beside me in my deep-muck valley. We butt heads occasionally. We resolve to love anyway. We’ve cried and laughed jars of tears over the years.

Regina Holroyd is my “unbiological” sister. I’ve got her back in return. I attempt to do for her what she sacrificially does for me. This bonds us through 20+ years of ministry, through darkest nights impacting our families, and through a pandemic. It reminds me of the Bible story of the daughter of Jephthah. Jephthah, the commander, made an impulsive vow to sacrifice as a burnt offering, “whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites…” (Judges 1:31 b NIV) His 26

daughter came dancing through doorway. In deep devastation, he told his beloved and only daughter he cannot break his God vow. She replied, “you have given your word to the Lord. Do to me just as your promised, now that the Lord has avenged you of your enemies…. Give me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends…” (Judges 1:36b-37b NIV) “She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never marry. After the two months, she returned ….” (Judges 1:38b-39a NIV) I picture her friends with arms clutching her and sobbing like devoted sisters of empathy.

This vow and Bible story complicates our thinking, but her friends demonstrate sisterhood clearly. Do you have a soul sister to wrap arms around you in your hard? Ruth consoled Naomi. Elizabeth comforted Mary. Let’s be a Regina, a weeping friend, a Ruth, or an Elizabeth to someone today. Kindred-spirit relationships birth with one act of kindness at a time.

TURN THE PAGE Book and

Author Reviews

By Nancy Ryan Simply Hers Magazine

I’ve been on a reading jag lately, as winter is upon us and being outside isn’t as fun as it was. Liane Moriarty is a well-known author who always keeps me turning the pages. Her recent book, Apples Never Fall, holds true again. Without giving much away, our heroine Joy and husband Stan have owned a tennis establishment, teaching and coaching kids. They have brought up their four children in the sport and the family’s lives revolve around it. They seem like one happy family. Then they retire and are restless. Enter Savannah, a stranger who appears on their doorstep out of the blue, and disruptions begin in all of their lives. A favorite author of many readers, Debbie Macomber, also has a new one out. Her latest, It’s Better This Way, begins with recentlydivorced Julia who has started a new life and it is now six years past her unhappy divorce. She has been through the dating scene and has decided that it’s not for her. She’s happy and semi-retired, living in a lovely new condo she’s decorated in just her style. While she is on the treadmill in the condo’s gym, she meets Heath, who has a similar background and a similar stance on the dating scene. However, after conversing back and forth on a daily basis at the gym, they venture out for coffee together and things take off from there. I won’t ruin the plot, as things are going so well for them and you just know something is about to pop. Then her two daughters and his two sons enter the picture and the troubles begin. If you’re a Macomber fan, you know she always has happy endings, but I couldn’t imagine how she was going to pull this one off! While browsing the library shelves I rediscovered author Lis Wiehl and picked

30

up one of her books, The Candidate. As America’s top-rated cable news journalist, leading character Erica Sparks is interviewing presidential candidate Mike Ortiz. She notices something off about his behavior. As each question is posed, he looks to his wife before responding. She begins to delve into his background as a prisoner of war in Afghanistan. He had escaped and returned home hailed as a hero by the nation. She discovers more than she bargained for, and almost loses her life in the journey. I’ve always enjoyed author Wiehl’s books (who has been a popular legal analyst on several television cable news programs) and I hope you do, too. My friend Diane recommends The Push by Ashley Audrain. It’s a tense, page-turning psychological drama about a woman whose experience of becoming a mother is nothing like she had hoped. It is a story of motherhood and expectations and what can go wrong within a family when maternal feelings are lacking. Diane couldn’t put it down! Another friend, Kathleen, recently read The Vineyard at Painted Moon by Susan Mallory. She also said she couldn’t put it down! Heroine Mackenzie and her husband’s wealthy family own a vineyard in Washington state. Lately there is tension among them that she can’t quite put her finger on. The story involves her hellish mother-in-law and a husband becoming more and more remote. Mallory always writes good books for women, with good content and upbeat endings. I look forward to reading this one. What are you reading? Email me at nancyryan47@gmail.com See you at the library!

Keeping It In Stitches wrote Nothin' Says Lovin'

By Diane K Clow Grandma Quilter and Sewist Picker of Vintage Things

It is December 12, 2021, thirteen days before Christmas. No, the shopping is not done. The wrapping is not done. The Christmas goodies are not yet baked, rolled, dipped, or frosted. The tree is up, but the outside holiday lights are down. It’s “go time” and I just can’t seem to get going. Maybe it’s the 1-800-Call-Gram hotline call to sit for a two-year-old that has distracted me. Maybe it’s the last-minute Christmas deadline quilting requests that have me backed up. Perhaps it has something to do with the restocking of “fine collectibles” at my booth at the antique mall (good problem as that is!). So that is why I am now writing this article on “Self-Care” for the upcoming January 2022 Simply Hers Edition. Because I need to think about the “Self-Care” I am going to give myself after the holidays are over. So, POOF! It’s January 2022, and I survived the holidays (or so I am hoping). The decorations have been put away, the wrapping paper discarded, the tree is gone, and the holiday goodies have gone to waist (yes, as in the waistline), and it’s time for that promised “Self-Care”. Everyone has their own way of applying self-care. Some visit a masseuse or a spa. Some practice yoga and listen to their inner self. (What does one say to

32

one’s inner self? And what do you call that self? “Hey, You?”) A simple walk or gentle exercise routine may suffice. A hot soaking bath surrounded by scented candles and an excellent book may do the trick. But then, so may a bottle of wine. I find that when I seek those moments just for me that I reach for a can of those refrigerated orange rolls. You know the ones. A peel of the cover, a slap on the black line on the edge of the counter and the rolls pop to life. Into a preheated oven to bake and then scoops of the provided orange frosting to melt into these little spirals of Heaven. Then sit to eat, at minimum, four of the eight that come in the container. Maybe it’s a childhood memory thing, as my grandma always prepared these rolls for breakfast when we visited her. Perhaps it takes me back to a simpler time. Perhaps it is just a lust for canned, yeasty, hot, imitation orange flavor. So, whatever you do, find those moments of selfcare—yoga, soak, or get pummeled away. For me, there will be the canned orange roll ritual. “Nothing says lovin’, like something . . . “, you know the rest. Keeping it in Stitches and Orange Rolls.

Over The

By Willie Smith Simply Hers Magazine

GE

ED

Oh, my goodness! Do you know this is my 66th column? Why is that significant, you ask? Well for one thing, that’s a lot of personal information I’ve written about over the years. Some may ask why I’ve bothered telling you about the trivial stuff in my life, but others know that what happens to me has probably happened to you or someone you know so why not just “let ‘er rip, potato chip” and all laugh with each other. The next reason is the one that’s enough to put me over the edge. I happen to be 66 years old. What a coincidence, eh? Sixty-six columns, sixty-six years old. Is there some hidden meaning in all this? Probably not, but you know me, I like to make something out of nothing so I’m all over this. Some think the number 6 signifies stability, balance, and harmony, so being 66, I have double of those qualities. I’d like to think I’m mentally stable although many would disagree on that count. As far as balance goes, mine’s not as good as it used to be, but I’m working on it. And harmony? Alexa says harmony can mean being in agreement. I believe I have the ability to agree with anyone about anything. Okay, we can all agree that’s a big pile of malarkey even if I’d like it to be true. I say that’s some common ground on which we can agree. Are we in harmony right now or what? You know what I found hard to agree with a couple years ago? It was when Simply Hers decided to limit my yammering, I mean my writing, to a certain number of words per column. How could they do that to me? I remember just yesterday when I was but a child and started

34

writing this column. My first one was published in the 2010 November/December issue. In those first years they let me go on as long as I wanted, but then the axe fell and I had to limit myself. Do you have any idea how hard that was? Where was the stability, the balance, the harmony, you know, the number six in their rule book? There was no longer any common ground on which to agree. Actually, I’m just kidding. They said limit yourself and I said okay, what’s the magic number? I can follow the rules, but if you’ve ever taken the time to count the words in my columns (which I don’t know why anyone would), you’ll notice I go right to the max. What a rebel I am. Actually, that’s about as rebellious as I get. Rebellion is not my middle name. I didn’t get to be 66 without any jail time under my belt by not following the rules. I can follow the rules and look good doing it! So back to number 6 and stability, balance, and harmony.... Wait! My husband just told me he’s 66 which makes me 67. Now, ain’t that a kicker! Who put him in charge of addition and subtraction? Let’s see, I was born in 1954 and this is 2021. If you borrow one from the two and take four away from 11, that leaves seven, borrow again, and five from 11 is six. Let me double check those numbers. Dang, he’s right, although I will never admit that to him! So, disregard the above information and watch for my next column. It will not contain any stability, balance, or harmony ‘cause I’m obviously not 66! Well, ain’t that enough to put ya right over the edge.

This is the Midwest after all. We might as well enjoy and appreciate all of our seasons. When the ice and snow settle in for the Michigan winter and you are looking for a way to warm your soul, Coldwater is a great place to visit. Check out what our community has to offer! We sure love our festivals here in Coldwater! Come to our classic downtown area on January 22 to celebrate Winterfest with us. Our downtown is just two miles west of I-69, exit 13. Enjoy a winter day with festivities that allow you to celebrate the season. We often see ice sculptures, food vendors, and special sales events from our downtown retailers. Don’t miss it! Tibbits Opera House always has something interesting going on. On January 22, the same day as Winterfest, they are scheduled to host Absolute Queen: A Queen Tribute Band. Absolute Queen is a live show perfectly replicating the songs, effects, and music of the classic rock band Queen. You can also make the trip anytime for unique ways to have fun. It is a fantastic non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing (and adopting) horses as well as providing an unmatched opportunity for visitors to engage with horses. Hillsdale Natural Grocery GOING STRONG AT 50! By Melissa McCance

Retail businesses come and go, so you know that if one lasts for a halfcentury, it has to be something special. That’s why Hillsdale Natural Grocery is celebrating, because it is in its fiftieth year of operation! This local institution has been providing organic foods, ingredients, and quality supplements to area residents for decades, and business is better than ever. Hillsdale Natural Grocery operates as a co-op, and, instead of an owner, there are three managers: Michelle Nauta (20+ years as an employee, five as a manager), Joan Krauss (13 years as an employee, five as a manager), and Patty Pogue (two years as an employee, eight months as a manager). Besides the three managers, there are additional employees who staff the store. Although membership isn’t required to shop there, it costs only $15 per year to join and members enjoy some worthwhile benefits including a 5% discount on purchases (excluding meat, eggs, and cherry juice) and being able to purchase in bulk (e.g., spices by the pound or cases of other products) at just 30% over the co-op’s cost.

benefit the immune system. “Vitamins D3 and C, zinc, elderberry products, Quercetin, NAC (N-acetyl cysteine), and magnesium are all things we’re reordering regularly. We have a section just devoted to those. But the other supplements are popular, too. They provide an option to the usual over the counter medications,” explains Joan. “Also the stress-relief herbs and compounds, for obvious reasons!” The managers have seen a significant increase in business over the last five years. “It’s been growing, but it has just increased exponentially, it seems, over the last few years and especially in the last year,” says Michelle. “We’re seeing more college kids than before, more local people who have just discovered us, and more who have just moved to the area and find us.” One very popular section of the store is the bulk department featuring herbs and spices, flours, grains, nuts, coffee, and other items. That popularity increased due to more people cooking at home during the pandemic. Not only is there an extensive stock of these items—including the less common ones that are needed for foreign cuisine— but the co-op’s stock is very fresh. And, since they aren’t prepackaged, you can buy just a small amount when you’re trying something new. This is a real bonus with spices which can be expensive by the jar when you only need a couple of teaspoons for a new recipe. Not surprisingly, there’s also been an increased demand for things which can

The store has a wonderful cheese case featuring a quality selection at excellent prices. Be sure to stop in before you plan your next charcuterie board! You can also purchase farm-fresh eggs and greens, an array of wonderful chocolate, packaged products like pasta, cereal, sprouted bread, crackers, and more. When asked what they find especially satisfying about being involved with Hillsdale Natural Grocery, both Michelle and Joan agreed that the interaction with the community and being able to steer people to something that will help with a problem rank high on the list. They also say that the staff is truly a family, and that working there doesn’t seem like work. “It’s like you get here, and you turn around and it’s time to go home,” laughs Michelle. Hillsdale Natural Grocery is located at 31 N. Broad Street. Hours are 8 to 6, Monday through Friday and Saturday 8 to 5. You can reach them by calling 517-439-1397 or messaging through Facebook or their website: www.hillsdalenaturalgrocery.com.

Making Self-Care an Important Part of Your Budget By Alexis Hiles

What do you think of when you hear the term self-care? I know that for many people self-care isn’t something they consider on a regular basis. That had been true for me for a really long time. Like many others, feeling like I didn’t have enough time or enough money was standing in my way of prioritizing myself. In fact, I don’t think I even took the time to consider what self-care really means. It doesn’t always mean planning a specific time to do something for myself. It doesn’t always mean that I need extra money set aside for it. It can be the little things, like taking a long hot shower at the end of a busy day or ordering my groceries online to avoid the dreaded task of shopping in a busy store. But it can also mean carving out a night to spend with a friend or scheduling a day of pampering. Self-care is perhaps one of the most important things we can do for ourselves, but it also seems to be the first thing we move to the bottom of our priority list. Perhaps one of the best things about self-care is that it fits every single budget ranging from activities that are completely free and going up in cost from there. Some people can and will afford a weekend away once a month, while others don’t find comfort in a weekend away. Some people would love one two-hour nap a week to reboot, while others feel terrible after a nap.

52

PLANNING FOR SELF-CARE IN YOUR BUDGET When creating your budget, whether you do it in writing or in your head, whether you consider it weekly, biweekly, or monthly, it’s important to actually plan money

for self-care. When we do this, self-care becomes just another expense we regularly plan for. When we don’t make space for self-care in our budget, we tend to not prioritize it when it is needed, sometimes without even noticing. For my written, often referred to budget, self-care fits into our miscellaneous category. After all the bills are paid, we have a small pool of money we allow ourselves to spend on other things, and selfcare is one of those. The amount in that category varies from month to month; therefore, our form of selfcare varies as well. The best thing is that when we have $0 in that miscellaneous category, it doesn’t mean we can’t do anything for ourselves. It just means we choose a little to no expense form of self-care. LITTLE TO NO COST Go for a walk Work out Read a book Meet up with a friend Watch a movie/tv show you love Take a nap Say “no” to others, so you can free up time to say “yes” to yourself Call a friend/family member Order your groceries Ask for help MEDIUM TO HIGH COST Go on a trip Join a gym Order your favorite food Manicure/pedicure Schedule a massage Invest in a new hobby Self-care is all about you, and I hope you find a way to fit a selfcare category into your regular budget in 2022.

Wild Bird Diets In

Winter Wild Bird Diets in Winter

Wild birds have a rich and varied diet in spring, summer, and autumn when different foods are abundant from buds, blossoms, and nectar to seeds, fruits, insects, nuts, and grain. But what do wild birds eat in winter when snow and ice hide many foods and what foods can you offer at your feeders to provide superior nutrition to your feathered friends?

Natural Foods for Wild Birds in Winter

There are more natural foods available for wild birds in winter than many people realize. Before the ground freezes in late fall or early winter, bluebirds and other thrushes will dig into the soil and root through leaf litter to find hidden insects. Fallen leaves will also hide seeds, windfall fruit, and other foods for many ground-foraging birds such as quail and doves. Chickadees and nut hatches are adept at finding insects and seeds on plants throughout the winter, while sparrows forage for fallen seeds and grain. Abundant nuts such as acorns, hickory nuts, and hazelnuts are favorite foods of jays, woodpeckers will peck into tree bark to release sap even in winter, and waxwings will strip trees of any remaining fruit and berries. Raptors hunt for prey throughout the year, and many birds such as crows, ravens, and magpies will feast on roadkill and other carrion.

Best Foods for Your Winter Backyard Birds

Despite the abundance of natural foods, heavy snowfalls and ice storms can make it difficult for wild birds to find adequate food during the harshest winter months. Providing backyard foods that are high in fat and calories can help birds endure cold temperatures and survive long, freezing nights. The top foods to provide winter backyard birds include…

• Suet – These rich blocks of fat mixed with seed, bits of fruit, and dried insects are a favorite food for winter woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, bluebirds, bushtits, and many other birds. • Sunflower Seed – The best seed option for a wide range of

birds, whole sunflower seeds or sunflower hearts will both attract a wide range of winter birds, including cardinals.

• Peanut Butter – Smearing peanut butter on a tree trunk or offering it in flavored suet is a delicious option for nuthatches, wrens, bluebirds, brown creepers, and small woodpeckers.

• Cracked Corn – High in carbs to provide quick energy on cold days, cracked corn is a great food for quail, wild turkeys, doves, ducks, and other ground-feeding birds.

Tips for Feeding Winter Birds

No matter what foods you are offering or which winter birds enjoy your buffet’s bounty, there are ways to adjust your feeding station to provide nutritious food even during stormy winter days so no bird goes hungry. • Use large-capacity feeders to accommodate hungry flocks so more birds can feed at once. • Install broad covers and baffles to keep the feeders and perches free from snow and ice. • Fill feeders several days before storms so birds can feed easily before poor weather begins. • Toss some seed below patio tables or deck edges so groundfeeding birds can forage easily. • Clean off feeders immediately after storms so birds can quickly replenish their energy. • Decorate trees and bushes with popcorn, cereal, and berry garlands for festive feeders. • Store extra seed in sturdy, rodent-proof containers in a cool, dark location.

Beyond the Feeders

While offering food to wild birds in winter is essential to help keep your feathered friends well fed, providing for their water and shelter needs is equally important. A heated bird bath can provide fresh, clean, liquid water even on the coldest days, or you can add an immersible heater (rated for outdoor use) to an existing bird bath to prevent excessive ice buildup. This will ensure birds can stay hydrated without needing to eat ice or snow, which can use up too many calories or cause dangerous chills.

• Nyjer – This small, oil-rich seed is an ideal option for winter finches, including pine siskins, common redpolls, American goldfinches and purple finches.

Good shelter will also help protect winter birds from poor weather and hungry predators. Evergreen landscaping arranged in tiers is great natural shelter, or you can build a brush pile from autumn prunings or discarded Christmas trees for instant shelter.

• Millet – White proso millet is rich in carbohydrates and

Bird roost

provides great winter energy for many small buntings, titmice, and finches that visit backyard feeders.

• Peanuts – Whole peanuts are a popular treat for jays, nutcrackers, wrens, and magpies, while shelled peanut hearts are sure to attract hungry nuthatches, titmice, and woodpeckers. 56

boxes or convertible bird houses will also help small birds stay safe and comfortable through winter nights and stormy days. By understanding the winter diets of wild birds and how to meet their dietary needs with the best winter foods as well as what other resources birds need through the season, you can easily nurture an amazing flock of winter guests to enjoy all season long.

Creating a tropical oasis inside our homes is all very well for the green-fingered, but what about the brownfingered, less knowledgable plant parents among us? Well, it’s thanks to the many great “faux” options available up and down the high street and online, that allow us all to benefit from this leafy look. This trick is to mix the two, so your easier-to-care for house plants such as palms and succulents could be real, whilst the harder and more expensive options, could be artificial, but visitors to your home will never know.

PET TALK

February is National Pet Dental Health Month: What You Should Know

Studies have shown that a healthy mouth can actually add years to your pet’s life. 80% of dogs and 70% of cats will have some form of dental disease before they turn three. Dental problems don’t just affect the mouth, either. Dental disease can have adverse effects on the heart, kidneys, and other major organs. By performing routine cleanings before there are significant problems, we help our pets stay healthier longer. Don’t turn up your nose at Fido’s or Fluffy’s bad breath! That odor might signify a serious health risk, with the potential to damage not only your pet’s teeth and gums but its internal organs as Periodontal Disease Periodontal disease is the most common problem affecting pets in all age groups. Diseases that affect the oral tissues can cause the teeth to fall out. There are primary organ diseases that can cause oral lesions. Finally, periodontal disease can have a secondary effect on major organs, causing or exacerbating organ system diseases. The very best way to prevent periodontal disease is daily dental home care, but it is useful to add in effective, evidence-based dental food to provide daily plaque control. The specific risk factors that can contribute to periodontal disease in dogs include: Breed: Purebreds, small dogs, and pets with short muzzles are prone to overcrowding and rotation of teeth, as well as misalignment. Age: The older the pet, the longer dental disease has to accumulate. Immune system health: A healthy immune system contributes to a healthy mouth.

At Home Dental Care Brush your pet’s teeth! Even if you can’t brush every day, developing a routine with your pet is one of the most effective ways of stopping plaque and tartar buildup. Introduce your pet to tooth brushing slowly using lots of praise. Start by introducing your finger into the mouth (dipping it in something tasty like broth or tuna helps!)

Keep sessions short and positive! Once your pet tolerates your finger, you can slowly introduce a soft, wet toothbrush. Once your pet tolerates brushing you can introduce him to a special veterinary toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste for your pet.

COUNTY OF HILLSDALE VETERANS SERVICES LOCAL SERVICES FOR VETERANS: We can assist veterans in filing for all Federal, State and County Veteran’s benefits. TRANSPORTATION: Hillsdale County offers transportation to Ann Arbor Monday through Thursday by appointment only and for VA Clinic or hospital only.

Adoptable Pets Fernandez

Wren

Domestic shorthair Spayed female 10 yrs. old

Wren had a rough start at life, so this girl is still working on figuring things out. This queen bee is looking for a quiet home with an adopter who has a pocket full of patience to help her adjust to people and the world around her. If you are looking for a roommate that won’t invade your privacy, Wren might be the one for you. Apply to foster or adopt her at lenhumanesoc.org!

Male 7 yrs. old

Fernandez came to the shelter as a trapped 4-weekold kitten. The foster mom worked hard at building trust and he loves being petted and scratched but is not comfortable being held. He loves toys, eats well, and is litter trained. With patience and time, he could learn to trust fully. This kitten would do better in a quieter home without a dog and should not be a first time kitten for young children. 3881 Tripp Rd, Osseo • (517) 523-2308

What Retirement Could Mean for Your Real Estate Needs

Talk to a real estate agent about what your house may be worth before deciding to sell. They know the market and, more importantly, the area and will give you a price that is competitive and fair. If the number is not exactly what you were hoping for, a real estate agent may suggest some small reasonable improvements that will help you get more equity out of your home.

Thinking about retirement? Maybe you have just retired or will in the next six months to a year. With the baby boomer generation reaching retirement age, millions of Americans are leaving the workforce and starting their next chapter. New retirees have to think financially differently once they retire. Their income will not be the same as it previously was and they will, of course, have much more free time on their hands. Their current home may no longer fit their needs and it is time to relocate or downsize.

before making big changes. Retiring baby boomers living in the same house for 25, 30, even 40 years need to know the process first before deciding to sell. If the mortgage has been paid off, all the equity they have acquired can go to the purchase of the next home or for traveling, for example. Recently, home equity has increased even more. According to a recent Core Logics report, “U.S. homeowners with mortgages (roughly 63% of all properties) have seen their equity increase by a total of nearly $2.9 trillion since the second quarter of 2020, an increase of 29.3% year over year.”

Mary Playford

Being closer to family is the top reason retirees look to move. They want to be closer to the grandkids and be able to participate in their lives and help out with child care. They also may be looking for a one-story home instead of their current two-story, as stairs are not always desirable for retirees. Moving closer to family may also mean moving into the city and out of a rural property, possibly with acreage. This can be a win-win in the fact that the move will not only bring you closer to family but also closer to your healthcare providers. It can also reduce or even remove yard maintenance. Instead of spending your Saturday mowing the lawn or raking leaves, you can be visiting your family or taking a day-trip. Recent retirees may want to hold off from downsizing right off the bat. It is a good idea to take some time and live with your current income and expenses

While it may be exciting to think about moving closer to the kids or no longer having to mow the yard, don’t jump into anything too quickly. Take a year or so to understand your finances fully as a retiree to see what you can and can’t afford. Remember to include closing costs when selling your home and HOA fees if moving into a condo. This is an exciting new chapter of your life – so enjoy it. Don’t let the stress of buying or selling prohibit you from your dream of visiting every national park or seeing the Eiffel Tower. If you want to live five minutes from the grandkids, it can happen.

Talk to a real estate professional not only to help you know your home’s value but to take away the stress and worry of selling or buying a home.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT

SEPTIC SYSTEMS

Septic tanks and septic systems are an important but often

forgotten part of the home –

much like electricity or water. To quote a popular power ballad by

rock (and spectacular hair) band from the 80s, Cinderella, “You

don’t know what you’ve got, ‘til it’s gone.”

Living in a rural area, you are probably a bit familiar with what a septic system is. If you have just moved into your home or are moving to a rural area for the first time, here is a crash course on what a septic system is and how it works. It may not be fun to think about, but if you have a septic tank, it is important to know how it works. The plumbing from the home is pumped into a septic tank. The septic tank digests the organic matter and then separates the floatable matter (like grease or

oil) from the solids in the wastewater. Then the liquid is discharged using a pump to a series of perforated pipes in the drain field where the liquid is put back into the soil. Septic systems are sophisticated and necessary to maintain your health and safety. Living in a rural area means not only does your home use a septic system but also a well. It is important to have proper distance from the well to the drain field, and make sure each part of the septic system is properly maintained so it operates correctly. Tanks must be emptied regularly and drain fields should be monitored. Failure to do so can result in contaminates entering the ground near the well which could impact your home’s drinking water. Concrete septic tanks are a reliable wastewater system option for homeowners and commercial businesses. Michigan’s heavy snows and rains can saturate the ground, but concrete septic tanks will never

rust or “float” to the surface inevitably leading to failure. They are also environmentally safe and do not affect ground water quality. Precast tanks are the most common way to purchase a concrete septic tank. The tanks are delivered ready to be put in the ground and installation is straightforward. The durability of concrete means a tank can be used for up to 40 years without replacement. Also, the solid structure can be pumped empty without the fear of collapsing the tank (which can happen with other types of materials). A precast tank is also made airtight so owners do not have to worry about groundwater leaking in or septic water leaking out. Septic systems should be inspected every three years by a professional to make sure everything is working properly. There are some red flags, however, that you should keep an eye out for to make sure your septic system is working properly including a sewage back-up in the home, puddles in the drain field, a foul order near the septic tank, contaminated well water, and greener grass in and around the drain field. If you notice any of these problems in or around the home, contact a septic system professional right away. It could just be a simple fix or it could mean that your septic system has failed. Septic systems may seem straightforward, but they are complicated, sophisticated systems designed to keep you and your home’s water safe. Keep up regular maintenance of your septic system and you can go decades without having to replace it. Becker & Scrivens of Hillsdale and Montpelier Ohio offers concrete septic tanks and is the leading ready mix concrete supplier in the area. Tell your contractor know that you want Becker & Scrivens concrete for your next construction project, have them

Recipes When it’s gray and cold outside, it’s comforting to curl up with something hot and flavorful to sip. Practice a little delicious self-care with these recipes that take you beyond basic coffee, tea, and hot chocolate.

London Fog Earl Gray Tea Latte

INGREDIENTS 2 cups water 2 Earl Grey tea bags 2 tablespoons honey or vegan honey substitute 4 cups milk (skim, 1%, non-dairy—your choice) 2-3 teaspoons pure vanilla extract vanilla sugar for garnish (optional) DIRECTIONS Set a medium pot over high heat and add the water. When it starts to boil, turn the heat to low and add the tea bags. Let the tea steep until it’s as dark and strong as possible (about 5-7 minutes). Remove the tea bags from the pot and stir in the honey until it dissolves. Add the milk and vanilla and stir gently with a spoon until the mixture reaches a simmer. Keep the heat low to prevent the mixture from boiling and to maintain a low simmer. Let the mixture simmer for about 4-5 minutes over low heat, stirring every minute or two. Pour it into 4 mugs. Add some vanilla sugar to the top (if desired) for garnish. Enjoy! www.thebusybaker.ca

Stir again right before serving and taste. If desired, top with any of the garnishes listed. You can also garnish the cups by dipping the rims in caramel sauce and then into the graham cracker crumbs. www.thecookierookie.com
