I want to end this year with a heartfelt thanks to our advertisers! I know I thank them every think the repetition makes the appreciation less sincere. Their steady support makes the magazine patronize local retailers, professionals, and service providers whenever you can.

Post - Holiday Organizing
After the holidays is a great time to tackle organizing your space and purging any items you no longer use. Included are some helpful tips as you tackle your organization projects this year.
Designate a space for all the clutter to go as you organize yourself.
Tackle one room/closet at a time. Trying to think of organizing your whole home at once can be very overwhelming. Just focus on one space at a time. When that space is complete, move on to another one.
Make sure everything has a “home”. Don’t hesitate to invest in closed storage spaces so you can ensure everything has a “home” and your home looks neat and clutter free.
Ditch what you no longer use. We all tend to accumulate items along the way that we think we will use but never do. Let go of what you have not used in the past year.
Once your space is organized, make sure you have a system for keeping it that way that is sustainable for your lifestyle.

Deanna NaDell—
The guiding hand of surgical services at Hillsdale Hospital
Written by Melissa McCance | Photos by Synergy in Motion
Providing quality medical care involves the coordination of many different elements, and this is certainly true of surgical services. Scheduling, staffing, securing supplies, checking in with patients, circulating through the operating rooms to see that all is well . . . these are just some of the responsibilities that fall to Deanna NaDell, manager of surgical services.
Raised in the Hanover area and a graduate of Western High School, Deanna earned her LPN and RN degrees at Jackson College. She continued her education at Capella University where she received her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and is now working on her MBA at the same institution.
After completing her LPN, Deanna worked for nine years in long-term care. Once she received her RN, she worked in medical/surgical and then oncology/ renal care. A stint in a surgical ICU followed. When she completed her MSN degree, Deanna served as a clinical staff educator for oncology/renal care and then moved into management.
Cover Feature
10
Deanna first came to Hillsdale Hospital working in the ICU on a casual basis (meaning employed as needed rather than being regularly scheduled) for about a year before moving to surgery. In March 2020, she accepted the post managing surgical services.
When asked what her job encompasses, Deanna replied, “First, it’s following the direction of our mission, vision, and values.” These principles include being a guardian of exceptional health services by ensuring access to high-quality care, defining and advancing the role of rural health providers, and the values of responsibility, empathy, safety, passion, empowerment, commitment, and trust.
Deanna said that she feels her most important function is to support her team in a multitude of areas. These involve staffing, equipment, supplies, surgeon satisfaction, quality improvement, hiring, and strategic planning among others. She has started two new service lines—neurosurgery/spine and ENT (ear, nose, and throat)—which bring highlevel services to the hospital.
In addition, Deanna makes departmental education a priority. “I want our staff to have opportunities to learn and grow. This will enable them to do their jobs to their highest potential.”
As you can imagine, her responsibilities mean Deanna’s days are very full. Each morning begins with what they call the daily huddle when the staff reviews the day’s cases to ensure that everyone has what is needed and OR (operating room) assignments are confirmed. She also fills in on cases if needed.
Deanna does regular rounds through the preoperative area, the ORs, and central supply to keep on top of having everything that’s required for the day. And, Deanna touches base with the surgeons throughout the day. Then there are the administrative aspects of her job for which she makes her daily “to do” list and can include going through email, attending meetings, ordering supplies, and meeting with vendors. She rounds with the staff again towards the end of the day and touches base with patients to make sure their needs are being met.
Future goals for her department are to enhance staff recruitment, engagement, and retention; growing new service lines as the community needs them; and, in keeping with her desire to see everyone on her team realize their full potential, supporting nurses pursuing the advanced certification of surgical first assistant.
We talk about it as do you own your practice or are you just renting it? Renting it means you go in, do what you have to, and get out. Owning it means you give it your best, you sacrifice if you need to, and you take your responsibility very, very seriously. No one wants to leave a warm bed on a winter night to cover a case, but if we’re needed . . . we’re there. You lose personal time and time with family, but that’s what we do. We aren’t just problem finders—we’re problem solvers. There’s real mutual support across the surgical service. We have a personal and professional investment in one another.
Many people do not realize that the range of surgical services available at Hillsdale Hospital is remarkable for a rural hospital of its size. At a time when most rural hospitals have been swallowed up by huge medical systems, Hillsdale Hospital remains a multidisciplinary, independent facility. Without having to drive to Ann Arbor, Lansing, or Kalamazoo, patients have access to services in general surgery, ENT, neurosurgery/spine, urology, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, endoscopy, and podiatry.
It’s clear that Deanna is committed to patients and to her staff. She is not only focused on providing skilled, quality, compassionate care, but also on bringing in more specialized surgical services to serve the community. Although managing the surgical service and its continued growth is a complex and sometimes challenging job, she is ready to handle it!
Deanna speaks highly of her team and their commitment to the patients:

Athleisure Wear as a Global Phenomenon
Athleisure by Definition:
A trend in fashion in which clothing designed for workouts and other athletic activities is worn in other settings, such as at the workplace, at school, or at other casual or social occasions. Athleisure outfits are yoga pants, tights, and leggings that “look like athletic wear” and are characterized as “fashionable, dressedup sweats and exercise clothing.”
The idea is that gym clothes are making their way out of the gym and becoming a larger part of people’s everyday wardrobes.
13
KEEP UP WITH SEASONAL TRENDS
In the past, fitness did not have trends, it was all black; now it’s seasonal. Mesh panels were big, and now designs are trending toward bigger placement patterns and color-blocking.
INVEST IN PIECES THAT MIX
FUNCTION AND FASHION
Choose clothing made using performance fabrics so it’s not see-through when you bend forward, you can’t see cellulite through it, and you’re not going to get a muffin top. Performance fabric is quick drying, odor resistant, and moisture wicking. Add an oversized sweater and you have a trendy, stylish look.
14
ACCESSORIZE APPROPRIATELY
It only takes one piece to take your athleisure look from gym to street. A pair of mirrored sunglasses, a structured leather jacket, a shirt tied around the waist . . . the key is that the piece has a sleek, sporty feel itself.
WHEN IN DOUBT, STICK TO NEUTRALS.
If you’re in your 50s and 60s, it’s a bit of a risk to put yourself out there and wear something very vibrant. Start with a geometric print or stick to black, white, and gray and then move into brighter colors as you get more comfortable.
15
The ON SKIN REPAIR
The skin is one of the most visible parts of the human body. Skin is the body’s largest organ and helps to retain water and protect internal organs. The average adult has about 22 square feet of skin which weighs around 8 pounds, according to National Geographic.
The skin can be affected by any number of conditions. While many are not overly harmful, certain conditions can affect appearance. This, in turn, may impact a person’s self-confidence. Therefore, many people prefer to address skin issues promptly and effectively. Here are some common conditions and how to address them.
Acne
Acne can occur on the shoulders, face, neck, and upper back. Breakouts may include whiteheads, red pimples, blackheads, and deep cysts. If left untreated, acne can cause scarring. Clogged pores cause acne, according to Healthline. This may occur from bacteria, hormones, dead skin cells, and excessive oil production. Non-inflammatory acne can be addressed by using salicylic acid which naturally exfoliates the skin. It is found in cleansers and toners. Inflammatory acne can cause infection deep beneath the skin’s surface. Products containing benzoylperoxide may help reduce bacteria and swelling.
Large pores
Large pores tend to go hand-in-hand with oily skin. They are extremely common. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends being gentle with the skin to help minimize the appearance of pores. In addition, cleansing and exfoliating the skin can help. The AAD says retinol, which is a derivative of vitamin A, can unclog pores and restore the skin’s natural appearance.
Redness
Skin redness may occur for a variety of reasons. These include sunburns, allergic reactions, dry skin, acne, and irritations. Identifying the
root of redness can help individuals make a plan for avoiding it going forward. Longterm redness often is linked to seborrheic dermatitis or rosacea. Certain medications and skincare products may be recommended by a dermatologist to address these issues. In addition, color-correcting makeup can help camouflage redness, according to L’Oreal.
Eczema
Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a common skin condition that produces red, itchy, dry, and irritated skin. It tends to start in early childhood, and doctors believe an overactive immune system may trigger symptoms. A dermatologist usually treats eczema with overthe-counter antihistamines and OTC or prescription steroid creams.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that results in the excessive shedding of skin cells. Psoriasis causes scaly, silvery defined patches on the skin and usually occurs on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back. Healthline says plaque psoriasis is the most common form of the condition. Light therapy, moisturizers, topical retinoids, and biologics may be prescribed to manage psoriasis.
Common skin conditions can be a nuisance, but various over-the-counter and prescription remedies can help.

STRESSED OUT?
Better Deal With It!
Let’s talk stress, PRIMEates. I mean, we just finished up what could be considered the most stressful time of year for many. Some will tell you that working out is a stress reliever, however, I’m going to tell you that’s a false statement. It most definitely can be used to manage stress, but in and of itself it most definitely puts stress upon the body. Of course, the higher the intensity, the higher the stress.
By definition (according to Webster’s), stress is “a physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation.”
This means that working out is, indeed, a form of stress. It’s hard and it’s taxing, but that’s okay, because it’s also VERY rewarding. I want to talk more about managing stress outside the gym. Stress can be a huge problem affecting your body’s musculoskeletal, respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine, and cardiovascular systems. This is all going to negatively impact your freaking workouts! I, for one, don’t need any help to make my gains any harder. I mean, I’m 46 and gains come much harder with age and recovery is a much harder track as well. Mismanaging your stress will make all of that almost like climbing Mt. Everest without ever training for it. Yea! No thanks!
Did you know that gut health impacts mood? Well, now you do! The guts nerves and bacteria have a strong relationship with the brain, as does the brain influence the
gut. High amounts of stress also signal the adrenal glands to produce higher amounts of a hormone called cortisol. Now, some know this from our talks, but others might not. Cortisol can make you fat!! Hahaha!
Well, what actually happens is that with chronic stress the communication between the immune system and the HPA (hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and adrenal gland) is muddied! When this communication is poor, it can cause many problems, but for our case the one we’re looking at most is the effects on metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity. Other things will negatively impact us here as well like chronic fatigue! YUCK!! Nobody needs that nonsense, so let’s do something about it.
So, with the new year here and this issue of Simply Hers focusing on self-care, there’s no better time than right now to start managing stress!
How do we do that? Well, each individual is different, so you’ll have to work a little to find what works for you. But some things that are great to start looking into are getting regular massages, meditation, talk to someone, breathing exercises. Now, this is where I’ll say that working out is good, too, but it creates other stress, so be conscientious.
‘Til next time, my friends! MUSCLE UP... live fit

TIME FOR SELF-CARE
The holidays are over and a new year has begun. Now is a good time to focus on yourself. When things get busy, we often neglect ourselves first. Doing this repeatedly can take a toll on the mind and body. Self-care is critical to our well-being. I like to think of self-care in four sections. These include nutrition, physical activity, sleep hygiene, and social support.
Often when life gets stressful, meal preparation and healthy food choice fall by the wayside. Eating healthy and well-balanced meals along with drinking plenty of water daily can energize the body. Avoid sugary beverages and plan for healthy snacks on the go. Try to incorporate more fruits and vegetables in your daily routine. Healthy foods are good for the body and the mind.
In addition to eating better, starting an exercise routine of just 30 minutes each day can be very beneficial. A brisk walk in the sunshine can be rejuvenating. Find activities you enjoy, try something new— it can be refreshing to your routine. Exercising releases neurotransmitters called endorphins that make you feel good.
Although exercising helps the body and soul, so can getting proper sleep. If you feel tired or have not been sleeping well, develop a bedtime routine. Try chamomile tea before bed. Or, take a hot bath. Going to bed at the same time every day and avoiding watching TV in bed are some other good sleep hygiene rules to follow.
Another staple in good self-care is prioritizing social or emotional support. Make the time to meet with friends. Surround yourself with those people who produce positive vibes. Listen to uplifting podcasts or join chat groups on topics that interest you. Being surrounded by people or things you are comfortable with and that bring joy to you can improve your mood greatly.
Life can get crazy, but we have to take the time to take care of ourselves. By focusing on ourselves just a little bit each day or taking a day for yourself once in a while can relieve stress and rejuvenate both body and soul.

Self-care. What does that mean to you? As with anything else, it can have a different meaning to different people, but the whole concept is enough to put this girl right over the edge.
Self-care sounds like a good idea and it is. However, it’s how you put it into action that can make all the difference in the world. In my mind, if I’m thinking self-care, I’m thinking selfindulgence. Is that the way you think, too? No? Never entered your mind, huh? Let me explain myself and maybe you’ll understand.
You see, when I ask myself, do I want happiness to start on the inside, my answer is, Yes! Absolutely!! Why? Because that’s where my self-care begins. Do I want to feel good, warm, cuddly, and taken care of on the inside? Yes! Absolutely!! Can I have something to eat that may not be the best for me, but would make me feel good all over inside? Yes! Absolutely!! Is chocolate the answer? Repeat after me, Yes! Absolutely!! The dangers of talking and listening to myself are endless.
When I went through my stage of self-care equals self-indulgence, my thought was if I cared about myself, why would I deprive myself of those things that made me feel good inside? Why not give myself whatever I wanted? You might be wondering how long I held to this idea before realizing the dangers involved. Was it a month or two? Oh no, it was not. It was … six years.
Count ‘em … one, two, six. Yeah, all that selfindulgence (aka self-care) just about did me in. My knees hurt like crazy and most days I can barely walk on my feet without pain. And my back! Oh, my achin’ back and all because I confused self-care with self- indulgence. Those
Eextra 20-25 pounds of self-indulgence made me miserable.
I finally got desperate enough to ask one of my sons for help. He loves his mama enough to help even though he really didn’t want to hear my complaints. The boy lived with me for 18 years and he knows my mind doesn’t work like, shall we say “normal” people, so he had to try something unique for me. Even though we live hundreds of miles apart, he started us on a walking challenge.
We coordinated our watches to keep track of our steps and, because we have the same smart watch, we can see each other’s progress for each challenge. I believe the boy thought I wouldn’t follow through as usual so he didn’t really try in the first challenge and I beat him. Since then, we’ve mixed up the goals to keep things interesting. Apparently I’m so interested I haven’t won a challenge since that first one, but my son and his wife have both beat me, and beat me bad. Well dang! I can’t win for losing.
I’ve decided my resolution for 2023 will be … you guessed it, self-care without self-indulgence. As I write this it’s still 2022 so I have a couple of weeks before the year ends. Are you wondering what I’m going to do in those couple of weeks?
I figure I’ll end the old year with self-indulgence before I start the new year with self-care so there’ll be a few cookies, a little fudge, some chocolate-covered peanuts, and just a few goodies until it’s time to crack down on “D Day.”
Am I bad? Is my way of thinking wrong? Could I make better choices? So many questions! I’m tellin’ ya, this self-care thing is enough to put this girl right over the edge.

Ask the Doctor:
The Importance of SLEEP
by Nichole Ellis, D.O. Simply Hers Magazine
Encouraging appropriate sleep habits in children starts at a young age but can also be reinforced throughout childhood. Adequate sleep is crucial to growth and development. Children who get sufficient sleep and who have good quality sleep tend to do better in school and have fewer behavioral concerns. Here are some helpful ways to foster proper sleep behavior:
Do not allow screen time for the 1 ½ hours prior to bedtime. Screen time (TV, computer, smartphone) stimulates the brain, no matter what types of images children see. Quiet and restful activities such as reading— alone or with parental help—give the body cues to prepare the child for sleep.
Do not allow screens or electronics in the bedroom. Screens or electronics, even if not working or not plugged in, have been shown to decrease the quality of sleep and deepness of sleep.
Decrease light. Some children prefer the use of nightlights which is fine, but low light settings are encouraged.
Noise machines have become popular, but one must keep the volume low and make sure that there are no extreme volume fluctuations. Sudden loud sounds can be disruptive to a child’s sleep, and loud noises near a child’s ear can cause hearing damage.
Routine is also very important. If your body and mind do the same thing each night consistently, it helps prepare the brain for sleep. These habits could be as simple as bathing or washing hands and face, brushing teeth, reading, turning off lights, or having family prayer prior to bed.
Keep consistent bedtimes and awake times even through the weekend. This becomes especially important in adolescence when many adolescents like to stay up late and sleep in, especially on the weekends. Creating an appropriate sleep schedule and sticking to that schedule even on the weekends helps encourage good sleep patterns every night.
Many parents use sedating medications such as Benadryl or melatonin. While short term and careful use is normally safe, use should be under the guidance of your physician and not be provided over long periods of time. If difficulty with fatigue and sleep persists, especially if snoring is involved, a professional sleep study may be warranted; snoring in children is never normal.
With a little vigilance and consistency, your child will develop strong sleeping habits and live a healthier, more energetic life. Wishing you peaceful and quiet nights!

By Diane K Clow Quilter and Sewist Picker And, hopefully, Good Friend
In Honor of My Amazing Friends
We were asked to write about “Self-Care” for this issue of Simply Hers. I thought of sharing my most intimate secrets of how to maintain your beauty, youth, health, and sanity, and thought, “Why, that’s easy! It’s all from the benefit of having amazing friends!”
Women need women. We need close friends who have been through some of those same trenches that we have that they can relate to, share, and offer advice on. I have a handful of wonderful close friends. These are the women that I could call or text and have an immediate response of empathy, hard truth, or just a good laugh at something we mutually find hilarious. These are the women I might see regularly, or months may go by. But we can always pick up and continue conversation, like we had just started it the previous day.
If you have not yet experienced a life-changing crisis, be patient. I’m sorry, but one will come. And this is when you will need these women—your tribe—as it’s likely one of them has been exactly there before you. You will need someone who says that they know how you feel, and it’s genuine that they do. In return, you will sit in that seat, too, and help them through the hardest times. The bright light at the end of this tunnel is you will celebrate life’s best moments with these same friends.
I’ve had friends who picked me up, dusted me off,
and pointed me in the right direction during some of the hardest days of my life. (Thank you, Robin.) Friends who came to the rescue with lovingly-made food and warm hugs when I was laid up. (Thank you, Crystal.) Who are great listening ears. (Thank you, Shelly.) Friends who have generously taught me the ins and outs of a new business, and, in return, accepted my offerings from my previous work life. (Thank you, Michelle.) And the list goes on.
My BFF is Jill. We tell each other a lot. Okay, everything. We laugh and cry and laugh some more. We know each other’s kids. We share stories and text pictures of grandbabies. We share intimate issues about being “mature” women and offer possible remedies. We share the challenges of helping aging parents. We get excited when we can finally find a day together to shop, lunch, kibitz (and the kibitz goes on for hours). To listen and be heard. To laugh and feel. Thank you, Jill. (She also proofreads these articles so I can sound somewhat intelligent.)
Amazing friends. This thing called “Life” is messy. It’s an extraordinary journey with bumps and bruises. You need friends to celebrate with and sometimes hold you up. It’s the epitome of self-help!

Life is the Berries Better Than Ever
I cannot see squat. My vision diminished due to screen time on the computer. Neglecting to give my eyes breaks, my sight declined dramatically. Without eyewear, words blur on the page. I cannot tell the shampoo from the conditioner. My driving—hazardous. Aging aggravates. I slump my shoulders, shaking my head. I cannot distinguish the food on my plate. Exasperating.
I try wearing glasses with funky styles like cat-eye, leopard print, and blingy frames. It’s fun, but every pair makes me claustrophobic. There’s nothing I can do about it.
Or so I thought.
My friend told me about lens replacement surgery. It’s the latest technology for eyes—a tri-type lens with correction for reading, computer, and distance viewing. The lens replacements never get cataracts. Patients should see better than ever. The best part—it lasts for a lifetime.
What? Lifetime 20/20 vision!
I want this! Mom gifted me money, so why not improve my eyesight? Patients need to be awake and talk during the surgery. Eek! I
experience a nightmare about going blind in surgery, but I dream of perfect vision. This demands I trust the doctor. Can I kick off the fear and do this for my career? I write. I paint. I love viewing God’s creation. My hubster reassures me to do the surgery.
Ta-da! I see 20/20 without glasses! It’s remarkable. It’s high definition. I notice people’s nose hairs. Who knew? Wrinkles abound. What?! The urge to dust surges.
Ha. But, oh, the colors pop brilliantly. My vision enlightens. Everything appears merry and bright. Lights halo at night sparkling. Gloomy Michigan days appear brighter than ever. It’s like an antidepressant with all this brightness.
I love it.
My eye-surgery experience reminds me of how Believers have a partial view and comprehension of God’s revelations on earth. “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face . . . “ (1 Cor 13:12a KJV.) In heaven, Christians will see, understanding fully with perfect clarity, God’s glorious perspective, plans, and purposes.
Heaven will be better than ever . . . forever!

Going with the theme of this month’s publication on self-care, I shall submit a couple of reads for your consideration!
Raphaelle Giordano is a #1 French bestselling author. Her book, Your Second Life Begins When You Realize You Only Have One has sold three million copies worldwide. This book is her first journey into the land of fiction. It received all positive reviews and is described as a feel-good novel that includes a lot of self-help techniques.
Author Giordano is an expert in personal development and is trained in communications and stress management techniques. It is available through e-books.
An Invitation to Self-Care by Tracey Cleantis also sounds worthwhile. To her, while a day of indulgence at a spa might help us unwind and feel temporarily renewed, real selfcare is a lifelong practice essential to finding fulfillment and joy. Through personal stories and observations, exercises and quizzes, and interviews with experts and everyday people, she invites the reader to consider self-care across relationships, finances, and our spiritual and professional lives. This sounds like one to pick up!
I am currently reading Robert Parker’s Fallout. Fallout is a Jesse Stone book, written under the name of the famous author Robert Parker and ghosted by author Mike Lupica. Confused? I was, too. Author Parker died a couple of years ago at the peak of his writing career. He made famous the Spenser for Hire series, the Sunny Randall series and the Jesse Stone series. Actor Robert Urich portrayed Spenser in that hit television series, and actor Tom Selleck plays Jesse in those television productions.
In Fallout, Jesse has to solve the murders of two of his dearest friends in his small town of Paradise, Massachusetts. Author Mike Lupica was appointed by the Parker Estate to continue

the series. I’ve read and enjoyed many of Lupica’s books and his style of writing, and he does not disappoint in this one, either!
Fellow reader Lindy recommends The Cloister and the Hearth, A Tale of the Middle Ages by Charles Read. It was published in 1861 and critically acclaimed as one of the greatest historical novels in English. Set in the colorful middle-ages, Gerard is a young Dutch artist who abandons thoughts of the priesthood when he falls in love with Margaret. But Gerard’s father has other plans for his son and tries to thwart their engagement. Without giving the story away, Lindy’s really enjoying it, and, if you are familiar with the illustrious scholar and theologian Erasmus, you will enjoy the end!
Margaret is reading The Heirloom Garden, written by Viola Shipman. Our main character, Iris, lost her husband in WWII and her only child to polio shortly thereafter. She has found solace from her grief in her large, walled garden. There she pours her creative energies into her daylilies and beautiful floral masterpieces.
However, as landlord to a young family renting her home next door, Iris is slowly drawn into their complex lives. Their grief is also present in a father suffering from PTSD, a mother suffering from a loss of professional identity at work, and their child, Lily, who is left alone to cope. Lily and Iris are drawn together by their floral names and their sadness. Step by step Iris’s surrogate family of flowers becomes a place of wonder for Lily, too. She shares it with her troubled parents, and they are drawn in and learn to embrace things that really matter to keep going through tough times. The story evolves into one of courage, empathy, optimism, and love.

Clever Ways to find time for Reading
34
The benefits of reading are undeniable. However, in the digital era many individuals, even those who love to read, are finding it hard to make time to cuddle up with a good book.
Numerous studies have examined the benefits of reading, and one of the most prominent findings is that reading can improve mental cognition. In fact, according to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, reading has the potential to slow the progression of dementias like Alzheimer’s disease. Reading also can improve memory, promote stronger analytical thinking skills, improve focus and concentration, and build vocabularies.
Women tend to be well read. Data from Pew Research Center has found women read more than men with the average woman reading 14 books in a year compared to nine for men. Women hoping to find even more time for reading can try the following strategies.
· Read what you enjoy. It’s tempting to pick books based on what others are reading or what you believe will make you seem more erudite. Instead, choose subjects that appeal to you rather than ones you think you should read. Books should spark your interest and curiosity no matter the subject, and you’re more likely to finish a book when you find it engaging.
· Join a book club. A book club can open you up to a variety of titles. Book clubs tend to stick to deadlines and schedules, meaning you’ll already be encouraged to read more to meet the minimum requirements of the club. Furthermore, an opportunity to discuss the book with others can motivate you to read the book in a timely fashion.
· Change your commute. Letting someone else do the driving frees up commuting time for reading. Even if the bus or train ride is longer than driving to work, it may present an opportunity to relax and turn some pages along the way.
· Invest in an e-reader. Some purists feel that reading ink on page is the only way to devour books. While books are portable, e-readers are even more so. You can have an entire library on a single device, enabling you to move between books simultaneously if that’s how you operate. Stowing the e-reader in a purse or work bag allows you to read whenever free time arises, such as in waiting rooms, idling in the school pick-up line, or while sitting in the car waiting for a spouse to come out of the grocery store.
· Set your own rules. When reading for pleasure, establish your own rules. Don’t hesitate to stop reading a book if you find it’s not as engaging as you’d initially hoped.
Reading promotes brain health and mental well-being. Various strategies can help you find more time to spend time with a good book.
It’s that time of year again TAX SEASON! Tax returns help many families pay off debt and provide a cushion for the rest of the year. But a tax return can also help you with a new car purchase. For some families, this is the perfect time of year to put money down on something more reliable when the extra cash just isn’t there any other time. Putting money down on your new car purchase will not only help lessen the overall amount you may be putting on a loan and lower your monthly payments, but it can also help lessen the amount of interest you pay overall. Adrian is a charming city in Michigan’s Lenawee County, originally founded in 1826 by Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad promoter Addison Comstock. Throughout the turn of the 20th century, the city gained international prominence for its status as the site of the invention of the world’s first wire fence and as the home of the Lion Motor Car Company. Visitors come from near and far to enjoy recreational opportunities at outdoor areas such as Devils Lake, Posey Lake, and Round Lake or to see performances at the historic Croswell Opera House which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Anthony, and Maude Adams. In 1985, the venue was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Theater spaces within the venue include the 640-seat Julia Argyros Theater, the 120-seat James E. Van Doren Studio, and the Farver’s at the Croswell piano bar.

The Feed Bag
By Melissa McCance
SMALL TOWN SERVICE WITH BIG STORE OPTIONS!
One of the great things about small towns are the interesting independent stores you can find there. In North Adams, you’ll find an amazing shop called The Feed Bag. Nope, not a restaurant, although owner Tracie Clough has had more than one person come through the door who thought it was. “I tell them they’re partly right—it’s a restaurant for animals,” she laughs.
Tracie grew up in the Jerome area and graduated from North Adams High School in 1990. Then she worked in plastics manufacturing from 1992 until 2014. A lifelong horse lover, Tracie also started her own business in 2008 doing horse transport.
When the manufacturer where she worked shut down in 2014, Tracie took a job with a feed store in Jonesville for the next two years until that business closed. She began selling feed from home and it soon became clear that she needed a storefront. Tracie found her spot on Main Street in North Adams and opened The Feed Bag in December, 2016.
Tracie started with horse and chicken feed but has expanded to include wild bird feed, dog and cat food, and goat and hog feed. Tracie stocks popular brands of horse feed including Buckeye Nutrition, Total Equine, Tribute, Equipride, and DAC. She also has supplements, blankets, buckets, and farrier supplies. The chicken scratch she carries is blended for The Feed Bag using a special combination of nutrients. Along with the feed, she stocks an assortment of chicken feeders.
Dog owners can get food (Victor, Diamond, Total Canine, Canine Complete, and Gravy Train), toys, collars, grooming tools, and flea and tick treatments. Tracie also stocks Victor cat food along with some other brands and Greenies cat treats.
Besides bird feeders including hummingbird and oriole feeders
and seed feeders, Tracie carries a range of seed blends, black oil sunflower seed, and nectar mixes. If you love feeding wild birds, this is your place to go!
Deer hunters can pick up Lucky Buck and Freak Factor from Marvo Mineral along with seeds for deer plots.
Tracie has expanded her product lines to meet the needs and interests of her customers. She added wallets and purses that are very popular as well as a boutique clothing section. There’s a nice section of gifts and gift-related merchandise like soy candles, cards, wrapping paper, and her Feed Bag clothing line including sweatshirts, tee shirts, and hats. And you’ll find honey and maple syrup from local producers.
In her household section, Tracie stocks softener salt, de-icer, weed killer, rat and mice traps, wasp spray, extension cords, some cleaning products, bungee cords, and other items that we need.
Looking for all-natural body products? Tracie carries the Naturulz line which are made in the United States. Products include Body Wellness for all over skin care, Ultimate Healing for pain management, and Total Foot Repair which she says is great for helping relieve plantar fasciitis pain.
Customer service is a big priority at The Feed Bag. Tracie will special order items for customers and curbside pickup is available. Just call the store with your order, let Tracie know when you arrive, and someone will load the items into your car. She wants everyone who visits her store to feel that they’ve been taken care of and been treated well.
The Feed Bag is located at 107 E. Main Street in North Adams. Store hours are Wednesday through Friday from 10 to 6 and Saturday from 10 to 2. Reach them at 517-287-0096 and follow them on Facebook for the latest news.

Wedding Flowers
Written by Rebecca Carlisle-Healy, Barrett’s Staff
hen planning a wedding, choosing the look of your flower arrangements is an important step. There’s much more to floral wedding planning than selecting a single bouquet or centerpiece; floral elements can welcome guests to your venue, appear during the ceremony, and decorate banquet tables during the reception. Corsages and boutonnieres unify your wedding party and create a sense of joy and belonging.
Partnering with a full-service flower shop lets you obtain your preferred arrangements and get the most value from your floral budget. Look for florists that offer a variety of services and products. They’ll guide you through a decision process that covers all the possibilities for floral décor.
Flowers in a vase can appear near the guest book stand, on the bar and buffet, and even in restrooms. Centerpieces accompany and enliven catering selections. Select décor that goes with a specific theme or the season of your wedding date.
Before your first meeting with a floral designer, begin your flower planning online. Use apps like Pinterest or TikTok to make inspirational mood boards. Track on-trend floral arrangements to create a VIP experience of your own, including a floral-themed photo booth backdrop for your guest reception. Look for plants and flowers that represent a favorite memory or family tradition. Write down any questions you have and share these references with your florist.
Flowers do not only set a memorable atmosphere—they make photos more beautiful. Photographers like to include flowers in shots of the wedding party and guests. A pop of bright color in the center of an arrangement looks great on camera.
The bridal bouquet appears again and again in wedding photography, from close-ups to portraits and group shots. When designing your bouquet, consider colors and shapes that enhance your attire and make you look and feel your best. Accessories like flower crowns and hair clips stand out and make your photographs even more special.
Get creative with building out a floral theme. Preserved and dried plants are a unique option for a bride with Bohemian style. Dried plants come in neutral tones but can accept dye or paint. You can keep preserved plants from your wedding through the honeymoon and beyond as a cherished memento.
Fresh-cut stems of hydrangea and dahlia pair well with the soft tones of carefully dried pieces, lending ruffled elegance to a subtle and naturalistic composition. Popular flowers like roses and orchids are showstopping but pricier than other options— surround these harder-to-find flowers with greenery, complementary flowers, or even dried plants.
Shops that operate in a garden center or nursery can select from their in-house collection of fully-grown houseplants, outdoor plants, and seasonal outdoor décor, eliminating expenses that would be occurred when working with multiple vendors. Some shops offer access to rent large pieces like decorative arches and ornamental planters that can be customdesigned. Ask if your florist employs delivery drivers on staff to ensure the highest level of care during transport of valuable arrangements.
Set yourself up for success by working with a full-service flower shop that offers a variety of services, custom options, and expert advice.

& How to Treat It
By Elyse Apel
While winter can bring many wonderful and joyous occasions like the first snow or the holiday season, its many months of cold and the general lack of sun can also cause Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
Also commonly known as seasonal depression, is well known to Michiganders. Yet, with its many symptoms, this common ailment is sometimes hard to diagnose.
This winter, if you are feeling sad or depressed regularly, see changes in sleep or eating patterns, or have an unusual sense of aggression, there’s a good chance you are experiencing SAD.
What is SAD?
According to the Mayo Clinic, SAD is a type of depression that occurs during changes in the seasons, usually beginning in the fall and lasting through the winter months. The short winter days and limited access to sunlight that are a part of living in Michigan in winter make people more likely to experience SAD. SAD typically starts to appear in young adults (between the ages of 18-30) and affects more women than men. Five percent to 20% of adults in the United States will experience SAD in either a mild or extreme form, said the Cleveland Clinic.Researchers don’t know exactly what causes SAD, but some speculate the change in seasons leads to a biological chain reaction that leads to brain chemical imbalance or vitamin deficiency.
People experiencing SAD will often see sudden changes in their sleep patterns, like oversleeping or undersleeping. They often also crave more carbohydrates and will gain weight. Because SAD is a type of depression, the most common symptoms are also symptoms of depression. Sadness, anxiety, mood swings, and agitation are all warning signs that you might be suffering from SAD.
Fatigue, trouble concentrating, or an unusual sense of heaviness of limbs should also be noted as possible symptoms. More extreme symptoms include suicidal thoughts, social isolation, or a loss of interest in usually enjoyable activities.
Symptoms look different for everyone, so the most important thing is to monitor your mood and habits and look for unusual changes.
Diagnosing and Treating SAD SAD is largely diagnosed by looking for a behavioral or emotional shift that is aligned with changes in the season. Treatments vary, depending on the severity of the case. Thankfully, mild cases of SAD can be significantly offset by just a few simple steps.
While the most common treatment for this condition is Vitamin D, some other ways to combat SAD are to eat nutritious foods, exercise regularly, get seven to eight hours of sleep each night, and invest in remaining connected to family and community.
Light therapy and counseling are both additional forms of treatment. Spending time outside can also be very helpful, even when it is cloudy. If it is too cold to be outside for long, try sitting by a window with the blinds open. Keeping a journal is another healthy way to process your thoughts and emotions and, according to Michigan Psychological Care, can have a positive impact on the effects of SAD and your mental health.
Be sure to reach out to your doctor if symptoms persist or are more severe.

In And Out of The Garden
with Herbs Bathing
By Susan Betz
Are you feeling frazzled? Escape to the bathtub to restore your spirits and peace of mind. Herbal baths are easy to prepare and a marvelous way to practice aromatherapy using scent to transform your mental state. Herbal baths can be briskly refreshing, perfectly relaxing, or gloriously fragrant, depending on the herbs you choose. Enjoy the luxury of an herbal bath in various ways, based on personal preference.
A quick and easy method is to toss a handful of fresh herbs directly into your bathwater. Another approach is to put one cup of fresh or dried herbs into a muslin bag, hang it from the faucet, and let the water run through the herbs as you fill the tub. Or, brew some herbal tea and add it directly to your bathwater. A tea made from a plant’s leaves is called an infusion. Pour boiling water over fresh or dried herb leaves and let steep for five to ten minutes. A decoction is a tea brewed from the seeds or roots of an herb, boiled in water for 10 to 15 minutes. Plain teas can be used as a gargle, hair rinse, or skin tonic. Teas and infusions should be made fresh each time you plan to use them.
If you suffer from plant allergies, test your herb mixture before using it. Place a dot of herbs inside on your forearm. Wait 24 hours to see if irritation occurs.

Lavender-Oatmeal Bath Bags
You will need small muslin drawstring bags for this recipe. Instead of a washcloth, you can use these bags to scrub and exfoliate your skin while showering or soaking in the tub.
Ingredients
1 cup ground steel-cut oats (colloidal oatmeal) ¼ cup lavender buds ¼ cup calendula flowers
Two tablespoons Himalayan salt Stir together the oats, lavender, calendula flowers, and salt in a small bowl. Scoop the mixture into small muslin bags and tie the bags closed tightly.
Yield: 12 to 14 ounces
Herbal Facial Steams
Facial steam deep cleans and softens the skin. Your skin should be thoroughly clean before steaming. Place a handful of fresh herbs in a basin and pour boiling water over them. Lean over the basin, tenting a towel over your head to keep the steam from escaping—stream for up to 10 minutes. Rinse your face with warm water, then cool water. Pat dry. Do not steam your face more than once a week and only occasionally if your skin is dry.

TIPS TO SORT, ORGANIZE, AND SIMPLIFY YOUR HOME IN 2023
There’s something about a fresh new calendar that gives us hope for a clean start on the next year. We realistically know that life will still be busy, unpredictable, and, more often than not, downright chaotic! But the optimist in most of us starts January with determination to make this the year when we finally________ (fill in the blank). For many of us, this is getting organized.
What does “getting organized” mean to you? Is it a smooth morning where everybody is sent off with a nutritious breakfast and no missing homework or unsigned permission slips? Is it getting to work on time, having an organized work area and a productive day that allows you to leave with a sense of accomplishment? Maybe it’s just getting the bills paid on time,
the cupboards stocked with groceries, or the clean clothes from the washer to the dryer and put away in the designated spaces (we can dream, can’t we?). Sometimes the idea of getting organized is more overwhelming than the actual process. It may help to identify WHY you should “get organized.”
Studies show that at least a basic level of organization can make you more efficient, reduce stress, promote a sense of calmness and serenity in your home, and even save you money. Studies also show there are several common traits of an organized person. So, we have taken some of those and added in a few of our own to help you get started!

Make peace with imperfection! Life will never be perfect, not even close. We live in our homes, chaos happens. Make it a goal to do what you can to get started. Many hoarders and people we would deem as extremely unorganized are actually perfectionists who can never get started because they are overwhelmed with the task of making everything perfect.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help! The first line of support should be your family. Share your ideas and goals, explaining that it will benefit everyone (not to mention Mom’s mood!). If you have a friend who loves to organize, pick one day a month to take advantage of those skills and enjoy a girlfriends’ day in the process.
Open your mail over the wastebasket or shredder! Don’t even lay that junk mail down. Quickly eliminate unwanted papers. To put them somewhere to be sorted “later” just adds to the clutter and makes the sorting process more overwhelming. Clutter attracts clutter. Break the habit by declaring all flat services in your home as “clear” zones!
Make your bed! I know, I know . . . you’re just going to mess it up again in a few hours but trust me, this five minute task will go a long way to setting the tone of your new organized life! There is something about a neat bed that just makes your room seem welcoming and calmer. And who doesn’t want that at the end of a hard day?

Steal 15 minutes from the night before!
As bedtime approaches, set the timer for 15 minutes and do a quick pickup/gathering. To keep from getting into time-consuming projects or being distracted, try what I call “grasshopper organizing.” Start in one room and remove an object or two that belong in another room. As you put it in the correct space, take something out of place in that room and move it to where it belongs. Continue from room to room, simply putting things away in their proper place. In other words, don’t leave the room empty-handed. You will be surprised how doing this for just 10 minutes will make real progress towards putting your world in better order! Spend the last five minutes laying out things for the next morning.
Clutter wasn’t conquered in a day! Break down the areas of clutter and set a goal to work on one or two a week. If you decide you are going to completely empty, clean, and reorganize your entire kitchen, you will never find the time. But if you take one drawer and one cupboard a week, the time commitment will be minimal. Try tackling a drawer while you’re waiting for dinner to cook. Clean that cupboard while you’re talking on the phone. As a small area gets finished, appreciate your accomplishment and be encouraged to keep going.
Know where to donate! Keep an ongoing box to fill as you sort and declutter. As soon as it’s full, get it out to your favorite charity. If you find organizations that do good work in your community, it is easier to let go. Separate your emotions from your possessions by finding joy in knowing your items will be helping someone else instead of filling your closet or basement, unused.
Any successful resolution or lifestyle change starts with baby steps. So let’s get started! Set realistic goals, don’t be too hard on yourself, and take the steps to make this the year when you finally do SORT, ORGANIZE and SIMPLIFY your life.
Happy New Year!

Maintaining a pet-friendly household requires contending with a certain measure of dirt, dander, and fur. It’s often a sacrifice made for the immeasurable benefits that come from having companion animals. Even when their owners are especially careful, pets can do some damage around the house. Homeowners can mitigate potential problems by choosing largely pet-proof furniture fabrics.
• Woven fabrics: Fabrics that have visual texture or subtle patterns can help disguise stains and make pet hair less noticeable. Opt for a color similar to a pet’s fur color to further camouflage shed hair. Pet owners should know that cats may get their claws stuck in certain woven fabrics.
• Leather and faux leather: Many pet owners like that leather and faux leather products are nonabsorbent and re-
sistant to stains, odors and punctures. In addition, fur won’t cling to leather and similar fabrics easily, making them a better choice for people with dander and fur allergies.
• Microfiber: Microfiber is tightly woven, making it a good option for durable, high-end elegance. Dirt and dust cannot penetrate the fabric, and cats are less likely to get their claws into this fabric. Some microfibers are odorand stain-resistant as well, though spills will need to be mopped up quickly. One concern with microfiber is the material tends to hold onto pet fur. As a result, owners may spend ample time vacuuming shed hair.
• Synthetic materials: Polyester, acrylic or nylon materials can stand up to wear and tear longer than others, so they may be appealing if pets will be allowed on the furniture. Durable fabrics also can be wiped clean with a cloth.

Adoptable Pets
Alvin Male 7 Years Pit/Lab Mix
Angelica has been searching for her very own Cynthia since she arrived at our shelter back in April. She arrived with a litter of kittens, but now that she’s rugrat-free, she’s decided “it’s the adult-only life for me.” Angelica loves other cats, mature adults, and a drama-free home. Sign up to foster or adopt this queen at lenhumanesoc.org.
Alvin is a sweet boy. He’s deaf; he knows some sign language. He loves tug-of-war and snuggling on the couch with his favorite human. Alvin is crate-trained. He will chase cats but has never tried to hurt them. He seems to be good with dogs, but a meet and greet with your pet is required. Alvin is neutered, microchipped, up to date on all vaccinations, and tested for heartworm!

Brandy Titus Building Relationships
is Her Trademark
After graduating from Baker College, as a Business Major with a focus on Marketing, Brandy Titus started her career at the age of 20 as a realtor for Century 21 Drews. Real estate eventually led her to embark on a career in banking, a career she has found both professionally and personally rewarding.
“I have been a funder, closer, underwriter, loan processor and now a lender. My ability to understand the file flow has been a huge success factor that has allowed me to be a top producer and close over 850 mortgage transactions since 2016 as a Top Mortgage Lender in Hillsdale, Jackson, and Lenawee Counties.” Most recently, Brandy became part of the Southern Michigan Bank & Trust mortgage lending team as VP Regional Mortgage Sales Manager for the Hillsdale/Jackson/Calhoun County markets.
At SMBT, Brandy plans to “continue to grow my customer base and serve my community with knowledge as a local market expert. I love what I do and being able to help people with one of the biggest transactions of their life is a very enjoyable experience.” She also hopes to inspire and mentor her mortgage lending team members, by encouraging them to be the best they can be. “In the mortgage business” said Brandy, “working together in a positive, supportive environment plays a big role in your success as a lender, that and your ability to build relationships.”
Brandy’s ability to build relationships, combined with her vast knowledge of the industry, is how she consistently provides amazing customer service experiences for her clients. She always strives to exemplify a favorite quote of hers “Your smile is your logo. Your personality is your business card. How you leave others feeling after an experience with you becomes your trademark.” “I pride myself on being personable and creating business relationships that develop into lifelong friendships. To me that is community banking. I never want my customers to feel like they are just another number.”
Using her industry experience, she is always mindful of what loan product best suits her customer’s needs. “I have surrounded myself with a trusted referral network of other lenders. If I know there is a better product for the customer than what I can offer, I am not afraid to share those options with them. I am a firm believer that when you treat customers right, they come back, and they tell others. One customer well taken care of could be more valuable than $10,000 worth of advertising.”
Away from work, Brandy is happiest decorating her home to make it a warm and cozy place for her and her husband, Doug, and their two young boys ages four and seven, to spend as much time together as possible. “When you are a farm family like ours, you really cherish the special conversations shared around the dinner table; no matter the time of night we always gather at the end of the day to eat dinner as a family. We want our boys to understand the foundation of family,” she said. “My husband and I spend every bit of free time we have with our boys, they grow up too fast and we never want to regret missing out on the little moments.”
For Brandy, who volunteers on the Hillsdale County Board of Realtors Education Committee and as Treasurer of the North Adams Jerome Interested Parents Club, maintaining a work-life balance is something she is still working on. “Especially with having young children, and the demands of our industry, it is easy to let the business consume you. Making time for yourself is important, and when everyone is getting the best version of you, life seems to function much smoother.”
Connect with Brandy by email at btitus@smb-t.com; by phone at 517-439-1509 or 800-379-7628; or stop by the Downtown Hillsdale location of Southern Michigan Bank & Trust at 10 E. Carleton Road. Member FDIC. Equal Housing Lender. NMLS:1446370.

GraysGorgeous
A mix between black and white, gray is by definition a neutral. But its varying shades, from light dove to dark charcoal, make gray as versatile as any color. These inspiring interiors demonstrate what to do with gray walls, along with how to decorate with gray as an accent color using accessories, furniture, fabrics, and more.

NooksReading
Though a true book lover could curl up just about anywhere for hours on end, there’s a reason why certain spots—a hammock between two trees or a plush armchair beside the fire, for example—are ripe for reading. These areas are comfortable and feel special— like they were put on this earth just for turning pages.

MEMORY MAKERS
The days are shorter and the frigid temperatures make leaving the house hard. But don’t let the forecast keep you from a weekend escape! There are plenty of Pure Michigan winter activities to choose from and here are five favorites.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
Embrace the winter and venture to the snowier Upper Peninsula. You don’t have to travel all the way to Alaska to watch a dog sled race. Every February, mushers from all over the country travel to Marquette to compete in the UP 200, a 240-mile course from Marquette to Grand Marais and back. And between the start and finish of the UP 200 there’s the Midnight Run, a 90-mile race to Chatham and back.
The excitement doesn’t stop when the dogs leave town. The snow-covered streets are perfect to set up a rail course for Marquette’s Downtown Showdown Rail Competition. Snowboarders and skiers of all ages and skill sets will test their skills on the course. With more than 1,500 spectators and events happening all weekend, it’s a great time for everyone involved!
Michigan Skiing
You don’t have to head out west to test your skills on the slopes! Michigan has plenty of ski resorts for every level skier. Crystal Mountain is the perfect destination for a pampering weekend. The ski-in/ski-out lodges make hitting the slopes easy. And the 11,000-square-foot Crystal Spa has thought of everything to make your weekend as relaxing as possible. For a more rustic and thrilling experience, head to Mount Bohemia and stay in a yurt! Mount Bohemia has two peaks and now offers a Snowcat experience for backcountry skiers.
Wineries & Breweries
Traverse City is packed with wineries and breweries. On Old Mission Peninsula, you might see workers harvesting frozen grapes to make sweet ice-wine in the winter. Take refuge from the cold in Chateau Chantal or 2 Lads to sip on a warm red or a dry white and watch the sun set over the frozen Lake Michigan. For the beer aficionados, visit Right Brain Brewing in downtown Traverse City for a culinary beer experience. Right Brain brews their own unique beers on-site with no extracts. If you taste cherry pie, asparagus, or pig it’s because they put it there!

Big Cities
If you haven’t been to Detroit in a while, it’s time to revisit the Motor City. There’s so much to do downtown, from ice skating at Campus Martius to seeing a show at one of the many beautiful theaters downtown to visiting a world-class art museum, there’s something for everybody.
For a quick and less expensive trip to the tropics, check out Belle Isle. The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory is home to tropical trees, palms, succulents, fruit trees, and an ever-changing display of flowering plants. Just a short walk away is the Aquarium, which was built in 1904 and is the oldest operating aquarium in the United States.
Staycation
If getting out of town seems impossible, look into a local staycation. From cozy cabins to unique B&Bs, there are so many options for a weekend stay. We spend more time exploring places far away than we do in our own hometowns. Plan ahead and make a list of events, stores, and new restaurants that you haven’t tried.
