Sarah Hartzler and Molli Grace Boutique: Caring, Fashion & Fun! — By Melissa McCance—

Some people just radiate energy. Even sitting still, you feel their vibrancy. Sarah Hartzler, owner of the popular online fashion site Molli Grace Boutique, is such a person. And, it’s a good thing she has that kind of vitality, because Sarah is one busy lady! Besides helping her husband Lynn run Green Energy LP and managing her online boutique, Sarah is also the mother of three lively girls ranging in age from four to 14. Sarah’s path to entrepreneurship was a winding one. After graduating from Hillsdale High School, Sarah received her undergraduate degree from Spring Arbor University. For 15 years, she filled various roles at Michigan Works! starting in the resource room helping clients use computers and ending as president of the organization serving Hillsdale, Jackson, and Lenawee counties. She also completed an MBA through Spring Arbor University with an emphasis in leadership. When her husband—someone Sarah describes as “a total entrepreneur, always starting and building ventures”— was getting Green Energy LP established, Sarah began to feel God nudging her toward leaving her position with Michigan Works! and helping Lynn. “I’d always worked for someone,” says Sarah. “I liked the security of someone cutting a paycheck for me.” But God continued to lead, and she could see clearly that they could do more together 10

She became the new owner on January 1, 2021, and thanks Jennifer for helping her learn the ins and outs of the business. Molli Grace Boutique offers a wide range of items including jeans by Kan Can, Judy Blue, Cello, and other brands. You can buy tops, sweaters, dresses, shoes, and accessories as well. Sarah also carries some gift items like tumblers, totes, and mugs, and gift cards are available. She occasionally carries children’s clothing, mostly for little girls. Sarah says she’s learned a lot about what her customers want and works hard to make sure she’s meeting their needs.

to grow the business and how much it would benefit Lynn for her to cover things at the office and free him to be in the field dealing directly with customers.

“I want to help women of all shapes and sizes find clothes they love and feel good in,” explains Sarah. “Curvier women can really have a hard time finding stylish, flattering items. That’s why I order things in the full size range from small to 3X whenever possible.”

Although Sarah was busy in her new role with the propane company, something else popped up to catch her attention. She had been an enthusiastic customer of Jennifer Gillispie’s online fashion source Molli Grace Boutique for some time and learned that Jennifer was interested in selling the business.

Sarah uses social media extensively. Shoppers who join the Facebook group can participate in a number of ways to earn shopping credits and win prizes. Tuesdays are “$20 Tuesdays” which give shoppers a chance to pick up some nice clothes without breaking the bank and on Wednesdays she features fun stuff like accessories.

“I was already buying the clothes, I was familiar with the business, and I thought it sounded like a fun thing to do.” Sarah and her husband discussed the opportunity in detail and both felt God was opening doors for her and that she should move ahead.

Every Thursday at 8 p.m. is the live sale when Sarah models a lot of garments which she describes to her customers. She likes to use the live sales to help her clientele, as she puts it, “shop intelligently.” She describes how the garments fit, whether or not they run true

to size, and gives an idea of the feel and weight of the fabrics. “It makes a big difference if you can see something on a person rather than just looking at a picture of it.” It’s clear that people love Sarah’s approach to retail and love what she sells. Since taking over the business, she has added over 2,000 members to the existing customers who were buying from Jennifer. Her genuine interest in and care for her shoppers comes through and gives a personal feel to the boutique. “I love it when someone comes up to me when I’m out and tells me how happy they are with things they’ve bought from me or how special they feel in an outfit from my store. That just makes me feel so good. I can see the comments when I’m doing a live show, and that’s always a lot of fun. I work at building relationships with customers. It isn’t just about selling—it’s about helping women feel good about themselves.” Future plans include purchasing more inventory to satisfy customers as popular items can go very quickly, especially during the live shows. At some point, Sarah would like to have a brickand-mortar store along with the online business. And, she’s hoping to get her daughters more involved down the road. One daughter has already been part of the live shows. “Sometimes I have to bring my four-year-old along when I do the live shows, and she just loves the camera!” laughs Sarah. “I get some great comments about people who are really enjoying having her there.” To join the fun as a Molli Grace Boutique customer, you can connect with the Facebook group or visit the website: molligraceboutique.com. Look for Sarah’s content on Instagram and TikTok as well. 11

h s a l p S This Summer

With plans of heading out on vacation or hitting the beach and pool, we know that our bathing suits are going to get a ton of action. We may splurge on one or two styles that we’ll reserve for Instagram pics, but the swimwear we’re going to rock most often are styles we don’t mind getting wet!

13

Too Cute Tankini

We love how this swimsuit breaks up the top and the bottom portions to create a super slimming effect. The teal blue color is complimentary for so many different skin tones, and the plunging neckline shows just enough skin without going overboard.

Poppin’ in Pink

Simple swimsuits like this one are always going to look great! We’re super into the hot pink color that’s available if you want to make a splash. If you’re working on your tan at the start of summer, this is a great piece to wear while sunbathing!

Plunge One-Piece

14

If you’re looking for a classic swim look that’s chic and sophisticated, we can’t think of anything better than this one-piece! The ruffle detail along the plunging neckline is supremely flattering, and the ruching around the tummy area helps to slim out your frame.

Tie-Dye Treasure

Good vibes all around! Whenever we pick up anything in a tiedye print, we automatically love it — and this bathing suit is no exception. We adore this style and the blue color palette that’s fitting for the summertime.

Floral Fantasy

Why wear just one color when you can wear them all? We’re digging how all of these bright hues come together, and the style of the top is stylish and supportive. You can buy the top alone or get the matching bottoms to complete the look!

Baby Steps

This bathing suit gives you the look of a two-piece thanks to the expertly placed cutout on the front and in the back! If you’re not totally comfortable wearing a bikini, this is the perfect swim look for you. 15

Vanity Car Wash & Ice Cream Becomes Overflowing Cups & Cones By Melissa McCance

18

It’s a common saying that timing is everything, and that is certainly true when it comes to taking on a new business commitment. For Carie and Earl Proctor, owners of Overflowing Cups & Cones (formerly Vanity Car Wash & Ice Cream), it was a matter of waiting on what they believe was God’s timing for them to move forward into this new adventure. Vanity Car Wash & Ice Cream was built by Tom and Victoria Burke in 1994. Since parents often brought their children with them to wash the car, the Burkes figured having ice cream available during warm weather would be a popular addition. “It helped balance the ebb and flow of the businesses,” explains Victoria. “Winter months are the busiest for the car wash and it’s the other way around for the ice cream store.” As their son Corey got older, he joined his parents in running the business. When Tom and Victoria were ready to retire about five years ago, he took over the management role while his parents were still involved as part of the corporation. Corey, too, reached the point of being ready to step away from the family business. Being a full-time firefighter with the Hillsdale Fire Department, he has a lot of time committed to his profession. But Corey didn’t want to sell unless the people he felt were right to take over showed interest. The business Fresh Rose Cleansing Foam, went on the market once but, as Victoria puts it: “Things just weren’t aligned. It $29, fresh.com wasn’t really time. There’s a lot more to running a business than people realize; it’s an ongoing process.”

Designed for daily use, the soap-free cleanser washes away dirtpride and impurities retaining skin’s Corey’s parents’ in their son while is evident in howthe Victoria speaks of him. moisture. Rosewater soothespeople, and balances, cucum“Corey genuinely likes and respects and he has a huge heart to serve. ber extract calms, evening primrose extract boosts collagen production, and plum seed oils moisturizes.

with giving us the feedback we need to keep getting better.” She says they thank the Burkes for the opportunity, the previous customers for their loyalty, and their new customers for their support. The Proctors have kept the existing menu while adding a few items like the Blueberry Muffinator: a warmed blueberry muffin with vanilla ice cream, blueberry topping, and a sprinkle of brown sugar. They emphasize that the quality ingredients people loved at Vanity will be retained along with the generous portions and reasonable prices. One new addition is the expanded beverage menu. Customers can enjoy coffee, espresso drinks, and all-fruit smoothies. There are several flavor choices for the espresso drinks and some special latte options like Uplifted (caramel and vanilla), Bean Redeemed (caramel and mocha), and HE-Brews (almond, hazelnut, and mocha) among others. There are also daily breakfast specials and some sandwich and side choices. “Come fall, our hours will be reduced but we’ll increase the lunch menu with soups and more sandwiches,” says Carie. Besides the drive-through, look for window service to resume soon. The Proctors are planning to have praise bands play weekly during the summer and are also looking forward to seeing ball teams clustering at the window for post-game treats. Current hours are Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., and Sunday from 1 to 10 p.m. Overflowing Cups & Cones is located at 214 South Broad Street in Hillsdale. Follow them on Facebook for the latest updates! He looked at selling the business not as just sealing a deal but as carrying on a tradition. After almost 30 years, we’ve formed relationships with our customers and the community. He wants to extend a sincere thank you and farewell to everyone who has supported our store through the years, and tell them that he truly appreciates their loyalty.” Victoria says she and Tom have had a good ride, that they’ve grown and learned a lot from their experience, and that they support Carie and Earl all the way. So . . . enter Earl and Carie Proctor. Earl, always an entrepreneur, and Carie, who’d never been in business for herself. They had been talking about possibly starting a new business, and, one day when they were in line for ice cream in Adrian, they thought, “What about an ice cream store?” “I thought I’d help with the store while staying at my old job. But then I was let go from my job.” Carie says they felt like God was opening doors for them to pursue the idea. “We already had a faith-based business that runs from October to April—ProEdge Arena in Osseo. With the addition of the ice cream business, we’re now able to serve and interact with the community throughout the year.” When asked if anything about the new venture came as a surprise, Carie laughed. “Every DAY is a new surprise, but that’s part of the fun. The customers have been wonderful. They’ve been so gracious as we learned the routine and have been very helpful 19

In the Garden

July Gardening Tips them appropriately so they do not fall or break. When staking plants, however, keep ties loose so the plants are not choked as they continue to grow.

It may seem like midsummer is a slow gardening season, but there are plenty of tasks gardeners can attend to in July to ensure a productive, healthy harvest and beautiful flowerbeds even during the hottest summer days. July is the perfect time to… Be Water-Wise Spring rains have ended and summer heat is picking up in July, stressing plants and making adequate water a priority. Gardens should be watered either early or late in the day when less water will be lost to evaporation, and drip systems are the best options to minimize water loss. Monitor Containers Closely All containers, including hanging flower baskets, need more water during hot July days. Smaller baskets may need to be watered twice, particularly on windy days that can dry plants out more quickly. Keep Weeding Weeding is a never-ending garden task, and even during hot July days it is essential to remove unwanted plants that compete for water and soil nutrients. Weeds will be easier to pull when the soil is damp, so it can be better to weed immediately after watering the garden Stake Tall Plants As different flowers, vines and plants grow taller in July, it is important to stake and support

20

Tend Compost Turning and aerating compost in July will help speed the decomposition process and minimize unpleasant odors, and if necessary, the pile should be moistened carefully to provide beneficial bacteria with suitable moisture, but it should not be dripping wet. Deadhead Flowers Both annual and perennial flowers can be deadheaded in July. For late spring flowers, this may encourage one last blooming, while perennial flowers will continue to bloom profusely for several weeks if they are properly tended. Propagate Plants July is the perfect time to propagate shrubs, herbs and spring perennials to spread plants to other parts of the garden or to share with friends and neighbors. Choose only the healthiest plants for propagation, however, and care for them well to encourage luxurious growth. Prune Trees July is a good time to carefully prune trees to eliminate damaged branches that could be dangerous during thunderstorms, or to help trees keep their desired heights and shapes. Pruning will also permit better light and air circulation for fruit trees or shade gardens. Plant Late Harvest Vegetables and Blooms While most planting is complete by July, planting late autumn produce can extend the growing season and provide a more bountiful harvest. Collards, lettuce, cabbage, beets, broccoli, radishes, turnips, zinnias and pansies can all be planted in July. Start Harvesting and Canning By July, some fruits and vegetables are read to harvest and it is time to start canning or preserving produce to maximize the garden’s productivity. Onions, garlic and peaches can all be harvested in July, and young cucumbers can be made into delicious pickles. Start Planning for Next Year By midsummer it is possible to see what is and what isn’t working in the garden. Keep a detailed notebook of plans, ideas and tips for next year, and start considering what changes to make to keep the garden at its best. It may not seem like it, but July can be a busy gardening season, and a busy gardener is a productive gardener who will have a healthier, bigger, more diverse harvest to enjoy.

ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE

By Hannah Burkhart, FNP Hillsdale Medical Associates

Antibiotic resistance can develop naturally in bacteria. However, our actions can increase resistance developing and spreading. Antibiotic resistance can happen when human and animal health professionals overprescribe antibiotics, when patients do not take antibiotics as directed, or due to poor hygiene and lack of infection prevention in people’s everyday lives. It can also be due to people traveling around the world, spreading resistant bacteria. While antimicrobial resistance is a natural process in bacteria, it worsens with antibiotic use. Bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics when they turn on internal resistance processes. Additionally, they can change their structure to protect themselves from an antibiotic. Finally, it can happen when they receive resistant genes from other bacteria. The leading cause of antibiotic resistance is antibiotic use and overuse. Some bacteria die when we use antibiotics, but resistant bacteria can survive and even multiply. The overuse of antibiotics makes resistant

22

bacteria more common. The more we use antibiotics, the more opportunities bacteria have to become resistant. This means that antibiotics won’t work when we need them in the future. If we decrease antibiotic use, the antibiotics may again become effective at killing bacteria. Antibiotics only work against infections caused by bacteria. Antibiotics do not work against viral infections. Antibiotic resistance is more common in some countries, and different countries can have different types of resistant bacteria. Travelers can become sick by eating contaminated food, drinking contaminated water, touching contaminated surfaces, and receiving medical treatment overseas. Poor hygiene and poor infection prevention and control can provide more opportunities for resistant bacteria and other germs to spread. Thus, in turn, making more people sick and increasing the need for antibiotics. Hand hygiene is the most important way of preventing the spread of infections, including antibiotic-resistant conditions.

Life is the Berries To-do List

How many of us are list makers? I typically make a long list of goals, crossing off items as I accomplish the tasks. My lists were always long, sometimes got lost, and often left uncompleted. Sigh! By Laura Loveberry Elementary School Assembly Author/Speaker, Inspirational Speaker Women’s Retreats/Conferences, Caricature Artist

I shortened the 15+ item list. This size reduction made a sizable impact. I limited my to-do list because my sense of accomplishment was thwarted by not finishing the long list. I now make a to-do list with only three tasks. THREE! That’s it for the list. This keeps my top priorities getting done first. I consider my day and resolve to write only my top three priorities. I embrace a sense of accomplishment because I complete my daily list nearly every time. My significant goals get done. Any other deeds I finish are bonus. To-Do Ta-Da! This gives me a sense of voilà! I no longer feel anxiety due to an overwhelming

24

list. By making it concise, I stay focused. In reaching the goals, I gain a sense of satisfaction. My typical list might include: 4 Write my spiritual article. 4 Do two loads of laundry. 4 Send a note to my friend in need of encouragement. Limiting the list certainly does NOT mean I am lazy like the Bible refers: “How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?” (Proverbs 6:9 NIV). I may pick up clutter, dust, vacuum, encourage a friend via text, write my mom a letter, and/ or call my daughter. Those are bonus. But the important or urgent priorities get listed and done. Yes, I figure out dinner, make our bed, and do my devotions. But these are everyday certainties I don’t need to write down. My three-goal list is doable. It simplifies and prioritizes. Does anyone care to join me? It’s as easy as three, two, one. Get it done.

2020 & 2021 People’s Choice Favorite Realtor! Getting Ready to Buy a Home Soon? Step #1: Choose your lender! - We have some great local lenders, and most Realtors will have a list of recommendations ready to give you if you ask. The best thing I can recommend is GO LOCAL!! We have both banks and mortgage companies who are local, and do a great job! Step #2: Choose your Realtor! (Hopefully that's me!) -Some people may not realize that you can purchase any home that is listed through any Realtor, no matter who has the home listed. That is ideal for you, as the buyer, because you're able to form a relationship with someone who can develop a great feel for what you'd like to find and what fits for you, and they can give you great guidance throughout the process. Experienced Realtors will have a good thumb on the current market and their representation for you can make all the difference in your process going smoothly. Step #3: Is your Pre-Approval in place yet? -Speaking of that lender you chose, have them pre-approve you for your home loan (unless you're planning to pay cash for the house). This process usually only takes a couple of days, and can be done remotely. It is a pretty painless process, and a necessary step before you start shopping. Once you're all set, the lender will give you an official pre-approval letter, and your Realtor will need that to get started shopping for you. Step #4: Let the Shopping begin!! -The best part!! Send that pre-approval to your Realtor so they have the details of your loan, and then you can determine if there is anything on the market currently that fits your needs. If not, you'll have all the pieces in place to jump on something when it becomes available. Happy Home Shopping!

Have you ever thought about becoming a Child Care Provider?

The Hillsdale County Great Start Collaborative has received a grant from the Hillsdale County Community Foundation to help support child care providers in becoming licensed. Becoming licensed offers some benefits that may interest you. Not only does it then allow you to watch unrelated children in your home, but you also qualify for reimbursement from the Child Development and Care Program (often referred to as the “state”). This funding will be used to offset the costs of making the move towards becoming licensed.

Funding support could include:

State of Michigan licensing application Background check/fingerprinting fees through IdentoGo Medical clearance with tuberculosis testing Furnace inspection Water heater inspection if fuel-fired CPR/FA training, Safe Sleep training, and radon testing Health & safe training: course 1 & 2

TURN THE PAGE Book and Author Reviews

By Nancy Ryan Simply Hers Magazine

Summer is finally here! Along with that comes author Nancy Thayer’s newest, Summer Love. What with being outside working in the garden during the day and my grandson’s baseball schedule in evenings, I hardly have a chance to sit down and read! The book is sitting next to my chair and calling my name. It’s about four strangers who come to the island of Nantucket for the summer and meet up and become friends. Now we are visiting them 26 years later at the renovated hotel where they met. Her books are always light and entertaining. I look forward to delving into it! My friend and fellow-reader Grigor suggests author Ruth Reichi’s memoir Save Me the Plums. He writes, “It is the story of the final days of Gourmet Magazine, which was a favorite cooking/culture/travel/lifestyle periodical” (but more adventurous and entertaining, in his opinion.) He reports that Reichi also wrote Tender at the Bone, an earlier memoir which he also recommends. I enjoy reading memoirs and will be sure to add these to my growing list! Friend and fellow-reader Sue gave me the heads-up on author William Kent Krueger’s newest novel featuring lawman Cork O’Connor. (I wrote about this wonderful author one year ago, and here he turns up again!) Sue writes, “The author’s latest is a prequel to the 17 books he’s written about Cork’s exploits. Set in a small northern Minnesota town near an Indian reservation, Lightning Strike is a coming-of-age story featuring twelve year old Cork.” The community’s sheriff is Cork’s dad, a 100% Irish cop from Chicago. He is married

30

to Cork’s mother, who is part Indian. Cork’s dad tries his best to bridge the gap between the local white population’s prejudice and the Indians attempt to preserve their culture. The two cultures clash when a well-known local Indian is found dead. Is it suicide or murder? Young Cork sets out to help his dad solve the mystery, and, in doing so, goes a long way toward leaving the innocence of his childhood behind. I have also read this prequel, and without giving anything away, the ending is unforgettable. Another friend and fellow-reader, Pat, recommends author Jeff High’s Watervalley Days series. As an ambitious young doctor, Luke Bradford sets up practice in a remote rural town in Watervalley, Tennessee. He immediately stumbles into one disaster after another. He expects the people to be simple, but finds his relationships with them are complicated, whether he’s interacting with his bossy but devout housekeeper, the attractive schoolteacher he consistently alienates, or the mysterious kid next door who climbs trees while wearing a bike helmet. If you have read Patrick Taylor’s Irish Country Doctor series or James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small, I expect this is another author to be similarly enjoyed. So far there are four books in the series: More Things in Heaven and Earth, Each Shining Hour, The Splendor of Ordinary Days, and The Fullness of Time. I know I shall look forward to reading them! What are you reading? Email me at nancyryan47@gmail.com See you at the library!

Over The

Did your mother teach you old-fashioned manners? If you’re my age (which isn’t at all as old as you’re thinking), your dear old mother must have taught you some manners, too: please, thank you, and my personal non-favorite, thank you notes. It’s those thank you notes that have recently put me over the edge. A lady at the church where I worked bought me some hand soap that smelled soooo good. It was such a nice, unexpected gesture and I could hear my mother telling me to send the woman a thank you note. I wanted to say, “Oh, for heaven sakes, Mom, would you please stop!” The thing is my mom’s been dead for years now. You would think she’d be tired of telling me what to do by now. I loved my mom, but she had the first 60+ years of my life to tell me what to do; I’d like the last 20-30 years to do things my way. So anyhow, I did listen to my dear departed mother and decided I would write the note when I had the time. My, how time flies! Seems like it was just yesterday I got that gift and here it is 5½ months later and I still haven’t written that note. I decided it was better late than never, so I wrote a quick note saying I was sorry it took so long to acknowledge the gift, but thank you very much. I saw this lady a few days later and she thanked me for the thank you, but she had no idea what I was thanking her for. She had never bought me a gift of any kind. Well, dang! What was I to do now?

34

You would think I’d just forget about the whole thing and I would have, but my mother wouldn’t let me. She kept showing up in my dreams telling me I needed to straighten this mess out. What in the world!? Why won’t she just leave me alone? When I was young, I was a good girl. As they say, I didn’t drink or chew or go with boys who do. You know, so to speak. I mean I may have taken a drink or two, but I did not chew. I certainly didn’t go with any boys who do … did. Whatever! I had not only lost track of time, but possibly my mind, and apparently common courtesy as well. I needed to find out who gave me that soap, write the note, and then I could sleep without my mother giving me “the look” in my dreams. I thought about putting a general thank you in the Sunday bulletin, but it seemed kind of tacky to use the church bulletin for my own personal use. I decided I had no choice but to investigate which snowbirds were still in Florida about the time I got the soap and send them all a general thank you for any and all gifts they may have bestowed upon me. What a pain in the tail that was! And the cost for all that postage? It was exorbitant, but I had to lay good ol’ mom to rest … for a second time. I spent the money, sent the notes, and then told mom to leave me alone. I knew she wouldn’t like my attitude, but she never had in the past, either. What’s a daughter to do? You can only take so much “advice” from your dead mother, right? I’m telling you, it’s enough to put me over the edge.

Manitou Beach Z

Nothing can beat summers at the lake. Manitou Beach Village activities are well underway, and we have a full calendar of events for the year. Awww… summers at the lake … fun in the sun, boat rides, bike rides, campfires with marshmallows, the smell of burgers on the grill and corn on the cob, hanging out with family and friends, playing games, telling stories, sunrises, sunsets. If you are so fortunate as to have been able to spend time at the lake growing up, you know that those memories never leave you and you will always wish to keep them alive. Michigan summers are the best! In more recent years, many empty nesters have sold their city homes to move to the lake, so it goes without saying that these same people are doing what they can to create new memories for the younger generations. In Manitou Beach at Devils Lake, there is an entire community of folks who work all year round to create fun events for those who are

Care for Them Even After You’re Gone By Planning Ahead Now It can rock our world when someone we love passes away before we’re ready to comprehend what’s happening. We’ve all experienced moments like that. We take for granted how fragile life really is, but a sudden loss brings it home. That is why it can be so beneficial for your loved ones when funeral plans are arranged ahead of time. This gives those closest to you the room to grieve without the stress of planning and preparing. It also allows you the opportunity to create your own unique celebration of life with your family by your side and can help them feel connected to you in life and death. No matter what life throws your way, pre-planning will be a blessing to your dear ones.

Changing Child Custody By Kimm Burger The first thing a parent usually thinks of when they are getting divorced or separated from their partner, is what will happen with your child. Having to deal with the issues of custody and parenting time can be emotionally and financially draining to a parent and it is not always a quick and easy process to obtain an order from the Court regarding your child.

Any parent, whether divorcing or never having been married, can seek an order from the Court requesting a determination of their parental rights and the State of Michigan sets forth certain parameters for the Court to follow when fashioning a custody and parenting time plan. The State of Michigan says that parenting time should be granted according to the best interests of the child and that it is presumed to be in the best interests of a child for the child to have a strong relationship with both of his or her parents. When attempting to establish an initial order for custody and parenting time, the Court should grant parenting time in a frequency, duration, and type reasonably calculated to promote a strong relationship between the child and the parent granted parenting time. These types of schedules can go from a true equal division of parenting time, an alternate weekend parenting time, or a modified version of either of those things. People are often confused as to what the term “custody” means. There are two types of custody, legal and physical, and they can be awarded jointly or solely to one parent. Legal custody refers to the day-to-day decision making for the children, such as medical, religion and schooling. Normally, legal custody is awarded jointly such that neither parent has the ability to make a decision about the child without the other parent’s consent. Physical custody is simply with whom the child lives with most; again, that can be equal with both parents or mostly with one. Once an order has already been established, it is not always easy to change it. A parent must meet certain parameters within the law in order for the Court to modify a parenting time order. A parent seeking to change the order must show there has been some significant change in circumstance since the last order was put in place to warrant a change. These changes are not just ordinary day-to-day things, such as job changes or moves, but the change has to have some significant effect on the child. If a parent can show there has been a significant change in circumstance, then the Court must delve deeper into the best interests of the child to see if an actual change should be granted; this is done by way of an evidentiary hearing or a minitrial. If the Court deems it to be in the best interest of the children, the Court will modify parenting time. Establishing custody of a child is one of the most emotional things a parent can do, especially if it is contested. It is always better if the parents can agree on a division of custody they feel is in the best interest of the children.

Small, but mighty, Jamie and Andrew’s family is growing in both size and strength through foster care. After enduring the loss of a miscarriage and the heartache of infertility, Jamie and Andrew weren’t ready to give up on their dream of growing their family and turned to adoption. Deeply moved by stories they heard at a foster care and adoption panel, the couple took one look at each other, and “knew we had to do this.” When asked about some of their biggest fears and reservations about becoming foster parents, Jamie shared that she worried about how friends and family would react. Would they be accepting and supportive of their decision and of the children that would enter their home? Would they love them like any other child? Meanwhile, Andrew was concerned with “trying to care for a child with needs beyond what I could meet.” Since completing the licensure process, the family has faced their fears (with great results). Jamie shared that the family has “been overwhelmed by the support we have been given and still receive today.” She also shared that while some are not as supportive as she had hoped, “Those who are, outweigh the sadness of those who aren’t.” Andrew, who has also found strength in that support said, “It is a lot less scary when you know you don’t have to do this alone.” In addition to the support they have received from their family and their agency, the family notes, “One of the biggest supports for us is having another married couple who

50

also has infertility issues and are fostering with intent to adopt, as they completely understand what we are going through and feeling.” Finding this personal connection so beneficial, support groups were the first thing that they mentioned when asked what would be most helpful for current foster parents. Jamie shared that while they “have family that is supportive and helpful, there can never be too many – someone to help babysit, make sure you can get your self-care in, and so on.” As a result, she encourages families considering foster care to “surround yourself with people who are supportive and committed to helping children.” Like many other new foster parents, Jamie and Andrew “were afraid that the emotional toll of getting attached and reunification with birth families would be too much for us.” When asked how they feel now, Andrew stated, “I now know that it is an absolute blessing to become attached to a child that needs you, even if it is only temporary. I would not trade anything for my (child).” Jamie added that when they accepted their first placement, they “were surprised to be attached to the child by just having the name and age.” Across the state of Michigan, there are more the 11,500 children in the foster care system and they are need of a temporary safe, stable, loving home. In Michigan there are experienced Foster Parent Navigators to help answer any questions you and your family may have about the foster care system. Feed Sacks the Ultimate Repurpose As a quilter and a picker of vintage treasures, what could be a greater discovery than those wonderful, colorful, history-packed, and reusable feed sacks!

By Diane K Clow Grandma Quilter and Sewist Picker of Vintage Things

Feed sacks were originally cotton commodity bags used to contain grain, seed corn, flour, sugar, rice, and a multitude of other goods. Initially made of plain cotton, later printed with the contents and maker label, women of the time used this “bonus” fabric to make dish towels, diapers, aprons, and the family’s underwear. These bags were mass-produced following the development of a reliable lockstitch sewing machine in the mid-1840s. Although coarse and stiff, waste was not acceptable, making these feed sacks the ultimate resource for repurpose. In some instances, these feed sacks would start to replace the more expensive, formerly-used wooden barrels. Over time, the utilization of the feed sack fabric, along with demand from feisty homemakers, created a competition for companies to print patterned fabrics so homemakers would choose that brand of flour or sugar based on the fabric pattern they needed to complete a garment. Husbands would receive detailed instructions on which pattern fabric feed sack to purchase at the dry goods store for this purpose. Printed cotton sacks were manufactured in hundreds of different patterns. I recall my grandma talking about going

52

to school in dresses made from feed sacks. Competitions were even held in the 1950s for best garments designed using feed sack fabrics. I had the privilege of purchasing from a woman who was looking to re-home her mother’s lifelong feed sack collection. We met mid-way for each of us at a designated town in a parking lot. (It felt a bit clandestine and stealthy.) She opened the hatchback to her car and there they were in all their colorful glory - hundreds of beautiful feed sacks! This followed a week later, when I attended a barn sale and discovered a cardboard barrel filled with feed sacks from the 40s and 50s. Preserved from the light of day, these feed sacks were as vibrant as the day they were produced. Feed sacks are a coveted piece of history. There are books that cover their journey. There are collector groups that treasure their collection. There are feed sacks quilts made in the past, and quilters today that use feed sack fabrics in their creations. For now, I just enjoy my temporary ownership of these beautiful fabric pieces. I plan to pick a few favorites and then release the rest back into the world to be treasured. Their story is as prized as the fabrics themselves. Keeping it in Stitches - and in Feed Sacks!

Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers are needed now more than ever. For more information please contact Heather Upton by calling (517)797-6020 or email casaofhillsdale@gmail.com. #changeachildsstory

My name is Heather Upton and I am the Executive Director of Hillsdale CASA. We have noticed an uptick in community interest in our program since we started advertising more frequently in Simply Hers magazine. I recently had a community member tell me that they had thought about becoming a CASA volunteer for a while but just could not make the leap even though it had been weighing heavily on her heart. Then she was flipping through Simply Hers and saw our ad and felt it was a sign to go for it. Advertising in Simply Hers has helped us grow our program and I am very thankful for that. I am also thankful for our sales rep Hannah Sayles. She is friendly, knowledgeable, and never pushy. She lets me bounce ad ideas off of her and is honest and encouraging. I have loved getting to know her.

RELIEF FROM THE SUMMER HEAT IS ONLY A CALL AWAY!

Thank you, Simply Hers, for allowing area nonprofits and businesses get the word out about their services in an informative and entertaining way! Rely on RUUD.

In and Out of The Garden—

A DAILY DOSE OF GREEN! Written by Susan Betz

“Give children a chance to love the earth before we ask them to save it.” ——David Sobel We all need a daily dose of green! Children and parents feel better after spending time outdoors, even if it’s simply stepping into your back yard or a stroll through a neighborhood park. Studies show that children who regularly spend time outdoors are happier, healthier, more imaginative, and have better attention spans. In addition, children who spend time in outdoor environments tend to be less aggressive and more cooperative in social settings. Nature is an antidote to stress for all ages. Parents, grandparents, and other family members can foster a child’s connection with the outdoor world by sharing and showing that nature is not somewhere else but a dynamic presence in their daily life. Following the life cycles of common local plants, animals, and insects and observing their response to seasonal change is a great place to begin. All you need to do is make time to stop, look, listen, and step into the circle of the seasons. One of the best things about backyard nature study and home gardening is you can do it your way and schedule activities and adventures in harmony with your family’s personal interests and lifestyle. Schools and educational tools change with the times, but nature’s teaching system 60

never goes out of style. Knowledge gained by experience is more personal and becomes more deeply recorded in the memory than reading about abstract concepts. Some lessons are best learned directly from the land itself. Having some basic supplies and tools for nature study will greatly enhance the hands-on experience for everyone involved and increase your child’s observational skills and connection to nature. • Hand lens • Magnifying glass • Camera • Journal • Clipboard & sketching paper • Binoculars • Pens and colored pencils • Basic wildflower and nature guides • Your Five Senses Whether you’re exploring nature in your backyard, a community, or a national park, remember it’s home to many plants and animals. When taking treasure from Mother Nature’s cupboards, practice stewardship, “take what you need, but need what you take.”

Lucy & Nellies COTTAGE AND LAKE DECOR

WED Closed SAT • 10 5 Sun. Tue.

Here are a few suggestions for simple activities to get you started. Earthly Art Inspired by nature, ephemeral art involves working with natural objects within their native environments. There are no rules or tools required; nature will provide everything. Collect grass, flowers, leaves, twigs, rocks, and other natural objects to create whimsical temporary art displays. Find a flat spot on the ground and arrange the materials you have found in different ways until you make a picture you like. Or try spelling your name or words by shaping the letters with leaves, twigs, or flowers. Take a photo and leave your artwork for others to enjoy. Design in Nature Materials: Pencils & paper Sit on the ground or patch of grass. Gaze around for a few minutes and closely look at things to see nature’s collection of amazing shapes and patterns. Think about the texture of the things around you. Find something that feels soft, like a leaf on a tree or moss growing on a rock. Sketch out some of the shapes or details that please you. How many different colors and shapes of leaves can you see? Collect samples of fallen leaves and draw their various forms on paper. Under a Rock Look around for as many different rocks as you can find. What makes theses rocks different from each other? Find a big rock that’s easy to move. Gently turn it over and look at who’s living underneath. Carefully observe to see if anything is moving, and count how many species have found shelter there. Identify these creatures with the help of a field guide.

Décor for your home, cottage, or lake house. Furniture, art, lamps, pillows, signs, and much more! 112 E. Chicago Rd. • Downtown Allen • 517.227.8497

Pet Talk Hot Weather Safety Tips (ASPCA.org)

We all love spending the long, sunny days of summer outdoors with our furry companions, but being overeager in hot weather can spell danger. To prevent your pet from overheating, take these simple precautions provided by ASPCA experts: • Visit the vet for a spring or early-summer checkup. Make sure your pets get tested for heartworm if they aren’t on year-round preventative medication. • Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so give them plenty of fresh, clean water when it’s hot or humid outdoors. Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun, be careful not to over-exercise them, and keep them indoors when it’s extremely hot. • Know the symptoms of overheating in pets, which include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. • Symptoms can also include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomit along with an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees. • Animals with flat faces like pugs and Persian cats are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. These pets, along with the elderly, the overweight, and those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in airconditioned rooms as much as possible. NEVER leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. Not only can it lead to fatal heat stroke, it is illegal in several states! Feel free to trim longer hair on your dog, but never shave your dog. The layers of dogs’ coats protect them from overheating and sunburn. Brushing cats more often than usual can prevent problems caused by excessive heat. And be sure that any 72

sunscreen or insect repellent product you use on your pets is labeled specifically for use on animals. When the temperature is very high, don’t let your dog linger on hot asphalt. Being so close to the ground, your pooch’s body can heat up quickly and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep walks during these times to a minimum. Commonly used rodenticides and lawn and garden insecticides can be harmful to cats and dogs if ingested, so keep them out of reach. Keep citronella candles, tiki torch products, and insect coils of out pets’ reach as well. Remember that food and drink commonly found at barbeques can be poisonous to pets. Keep alcoholic beverages away from pets, as they can cause intoxication, depression, and comas. Similarly, remember that the snacks enjoyed by your human friends should not be a treat for your pet; any change of diet, even for one meal, may give your dog or cat severe digestive ailments. Avoid raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate, and products with the sweetener xylitol. Please leave pets at home when you head out to Fourth of July celebrations and never use fireworks around pets. Exposure to lit fireworks can potentially result in severe burns or trauma, and even unused fireworks can contain hazardous materials. Many pets are also fearful of loud noises and can become lost, scared, or disoriented, so it’s best to keep your little guys safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area of your home.

Trevathan’s Sweep & Sew Shoppe

Business As Usual! Trevathan’s Sweep & Sew Shoppe has relocated! Do not panic, quilters, sewists, or vacuum shoppers—the store has NOT disappeared. You can find the same great sewing fabrics, notions, patterns, books, and other supplies along with great machines and first-class vacuums by heading north to 3980 N. Hillsdale Road. As Patty said on Facebook: “Same phone number (517) 437-5555, same owners, business as usual!”

Sweet Pea Children’s Boutique

Shea’Nanigans Charity Ride

Adorable!

Ride for Charity!

Did you know there’s a children’s clothing store in Hillsdale? Sweet Pea Children’s Boutique, located at 120 N. Broad Street, opened this spring and has many rave reviews. Owned by Rebecca and Adam Bauerly, the shop’s goal is to offer “adorable, affordable and good quality children’s clothing.” The shop is currently open Thursday through Saturday. Check their Facebook page for store hours and to see the latest news.

Shea’Nanigans will be hosting their Second Annual Charity Ride on Saturday, July 23. Registration starts at 11 a.m. and kickstands go up at noon. This year’s recipient is Chet Bristow, a retired law enforcement officer and current employee at Shea’Nanigans. Chet was recently diagnosed with cancer and will certainly be able to use the funds raised at this event, so let’s see all you bikers come out to support him! Shea’Nanigans is located at 521 S. Meridian Road (US 127) in Hudson.

Smith’s Floral Boutique

Beautiful Bouquets! Smith’s Floral Boutique has moved a bit south to 64 N. Howell Street. Even though it might still look like Gelzer’s Sporting Goods, rest assured that all those beautiful flowers, talented floral designers, and wonderful yard and garden accents can be found behind that door. Keep tabs on how the store develops in its new location by checking the Facebook page, and you can reach them at 517-437-4485 if you have questions.

MEMORIAL WALK Sun. August 28 • 2 PM In April of this year Gina Price was diagnosed with extensive small cell lung cancer. The condition is not curable but it is treatable. We’re hosting a benefit to raise money for medical co-pays and daily expenses. If you’re lucky enough to know Gina you know how selfless she and her husband Claude can be. Now it is our turn to help out a family who has done so much for our communty. We hope you can join the ride and help celebrate some amazing people.

Recipes When the really hot weather strikes, heavy meals don’t sound as appealing as they do when the air is crisp and cold. This issue’s recipes focus on three main dish salads—one a vegetarian option with solid protein content—plus an interesting fruit salad that can be a side or dessert. Enjoy!

Black-Eyed Pea Salad with Celery Ingredients ⅓ cup finely diced red onion

4 servings

15 minutes

Directions

3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 (15-ounce) cans black-eyed peas, drained and rinsed ⅓ cup finely sliced celery ⅓ cup finely chopped parsley leaves ⅓ cup extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 86

Soak onion in vinegar for 10 minutes. In a medium bowl, combine black-eyed peas, celery, parsley, and onion-vinegar mixture. Toss with oil and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately or refrigerate in an airtight container for up to two days. www.marthastewart.com

Pina Colada Fruit Salad Ingredients 1 can (10 ounces) nonalcoholic frozen pina colada mix, thawed ½ cup sugar ⅛ teaspoon almond extract ⅛ teaspoon coconut extract 1½ cups green grapes 1½ cups seedless red grapes 1½ cups fresh blueberries 1½ cups fresh strawberries, halved 1 can (8 ounces) pineapple chunks, drained ½ cup fresh raspberries Thinly sliced fresh mint, optional

4 servings

Directions For dressing, mix first five ingredients until sugar is dissolved. Place fruit in a large bowl and mix gently to distribute the different fruits. Add dressing and toss gently. Refrigerate, covered, until serving. If desired, top with the sliced mint. NOTE: This recipe makes a lot of dressing, so you might want to add it gradually if you prefer your salads more lightly dressed.
