Cover Feature The opening was hugely successful and the new store’s Facebook page was flooded with positive comments. That was followed up with a special event on the last weekend of September: The Paw Patrol Paw-Looza. Children could meet and mingle with the Paw Patrol characters for no charge, and a portion of the proceeds from the weekend went to the Lenawee County Humane Society. “It was just crazy how many people turned out for that,” said Danielle. “We raised $1000 in two days! I couldn’t believe it, but it was wonderful.”

Too sweet to stop at one location. — By Melissa McCance— Making a substantial business expansion in the midst of a pandemic isn’t an idea most people would jump at, but Danielle Brock isn’t most people! To be accurate, plans to open a sister location to Hillsdale’s popular Small Town Sweet Boutique started before anyone here knew of the coronavirus. “About two years ago, Alexandra [Danielle’s daughter who partners in running the stores] and I went on a drive through downtown Adrian looking for somewhere to expand, and nothing really seemed to fit us,” explains Danielle. “We wanted to see the new hospital, too,” Danielle continued, “so we’re driving out that way and we went by this building and slammed on our brakes!” The building in question was a barnstyle, freestanding building that had housed a farmers market. Danielle wanted something with a considerable amount of space to allow for more community events. “We have a giant party room there. It can comfortably fit 50 people seated and probably 100 standing. The building is perfect; we couldn’t have built a better one.” The process of purchasing and renovating began, and they announced the new location would open in January 2020. Well, we all know what was right around the corner, and it was actually August 2021 before The Sweet Boutique was able to have its Grand Opening.

Free community events that also benefit area nonprofits are favorite projects for Danielle and Alexandra. In October, they hosted “A Night at Hogwarts” which showcased a Harry Potter theme. Money raised at that event was donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Lenawee County. Future events include connecting with Toys for Tots, and area law enforcement departments will bring squad cars to fill with toys and the theme will be Zootopia. In December, the Grinch will make an appearance. “The kids just LOVE the Grinch,” laughed Danielle. “Our Grinch is not scary—he’s a fun Grinch, very lighthearted!” The recipient organization that month will be the Visiting Angels who raise funds for Alzheimer’s patients with an emphasis on veterans. The extra space at the Adrian location not only allows for bigger special events but also provides more floor space for inventory. Items unique to the new store include specialty chocolates and truffles which have been a huge draw. They carry over 100 varieties of soda in glass bottles, a bulk section that

is three times what they can have in Hillsdale, and space for 48 different flavors of taffy. If you’re looking for somewhere to hold a private event, consider renting The Sweet Boutique’s party room. This space is available in four-hour increments and is perfect for birthday parties, wedding or baby showers, team banquets, etc. People are welcome to bring in their own food and beverages including a cake. (They do ask that you not bring in outside candy.) The store will provide the room, table linens, and the atmosphere. Customers can also choose from a variety of add-ons including party favors, popcorn, snow cones, cotton candy, a soda bar, candy bouquets, personalized coloring sheets, and character meet and greets (available for one hour during the party). Danielle says that community support has been good, including acceptance by the Chamber of Commerce which staged a wonderful ribbon-cutting ceremony. “Word of mouth is helping and we’re working to get it out there that we’re here,” she adds. Fortunately, one thing they haven’t had trouble with is finding employees. High school students from Adrian and Tecumseh are there, as well as some from Siena Heights College. What has been challenging for Danielle is working out how to split her time between the two stores. Alexandra has relocated to Adrian and is managing that store, but Danielle still needs to be there some of the time and Alexandra sometimes needs to be in Hillsdale, so balancing the schedule can be tricky. And, as is true for so many businesses, supply can be a real issue. “Some things just aren’t coming in, or they’re coming in long after the original order. We’re also learning the best way to divide product between the locations when it does come in.”

The Sweet Boutique offers fundraising opportunities for local organizations, clubs, and sports teams. Danielle described some options: “Next spring, if a Little League team wants to come sell snow cones, come sell snow cones! We’ll give you the money, just you do the work. They can make hundreds of dollars. Girl Scouts can sell their cookies here. Anybody who needs an ‘up’ for their community event, come talk to us. We’ll try to help.” Take time to visit The Sweet Boutique where you’ll find childhood favorites and discover some new treats as well. The store is located at 4497 N. Fitness For The Holidays

Christmas?! It’s Christmas?!?! Where did all the time go? It’s been quite the ride this year as far as the weather is concerned. I mean, when you read this, it could be 70! Hahaha, probably not!

So, with holidays coming it’s time to have the talk. You know about how hard it is to keep your workout regimen going in general, let alone falling off the wagon! What I’d like to say here is what do your goals mean to you? I mean, are they so easily put to the back burner? But, it isn’t that simple is it? Who doesn’t like to get together with family and friends throughout the season? However, your goals are YOUR GOALS so it does mean something to you. Just because you’re going to several parties where there’s alcohol doesn’t mean you need to drink at all of them. Same for food, you don’t need to overindulge just because it’s there for you to take. There’s no reason you can’t drink water at the parties, it isn’t going to prevent you from having a good time. As for the food, eat something shortly before going to help control those cravings. Also, eat a small portion and maybe take a small plate to go to enjoy later. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you absolutely can’t drink or your goals will vanish. I’m just saying you don’t need to do it repeatedly. And, I love holiday food!! But, portion control will allow you to enjoy it many more times and could even fit into plan! Now let’s look at workouts. People say, “I’m too busy to get to the gym.” Well, I say that’s just not possible. However, a couple tricks to maintain throughout the holiday season will help you

immensely! For example, work out early in the day, before work if possible or even on lunch (not replacing nutrition, of course). That way, as things come up, you’re levelheaded to handle them for one, but also you can manipulate your schedule and not miss a workout because of it. Another way is to reduce volume a bit. Not volume per workout, but the number of sessions per week. If you’re currently on a 4-day split, consider a 3-day. Personally, with my clients I’d mash chest and shoulders together into one session. Something else to consider along these lines is to hit some days at the gym and hit one or two at home if possible. I don’t like that idea as much, because for me it’s too easy to get distracted with real world stuff and this time of year …. But, some are good about it and something is better than nothing in this scenario. In the end it’s about balance, not a lot different than any other time of the year. It’s just a bit more demand on your time. Balance is good and finding it for your family and friends isn’t a bad thing. But, taking care of yourself is a priority to you as well, and your family and friends understand that. That’s why it’s balance. Have an amazing holiday season my friends! I wish all the best for all of you this season as I do all the other seasons as well. Talk to you again next year. My year ahead looks pretty incredible—I can only hope you feel the same about yours. IS IT REALLY JUST SNORING?

Have you ever woken up abruptly from sleep, gasping for air or feeling like you were choking on something? Or, have you snored so loudly it woke you up? You may be doing more than just snoring. These are signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnea or OSA. OSA occurs when the muscles in the back of your throat relax too much. The roof of the mouth and tongue relax and cause the airway to close. This results in a decreased oxygen level in the blood and increased carbon dioxide and causes frequent arousal or interruptions in the sleep pattern. Many times, you do not even remember these interruptions. OSA can cause many serious health problems including high blood pressure, weight gain, and memory lapses. More seriously, it puts you at risk for coronary artery disease and stroke. This condition can even cause an abnormal heart rhythm to develop that may lead to sudden death. Other, less serious effects may be morning headaches, chronic fatigue, or mood changes.

A few more warning signs of OSA to pay attention to may be waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat frequently. Another sign is feeling sleepier during the day which may often cause you to fall asleep while reading or watching TV. Take note if you easily fall asleep while riding in the car or find yourself dozing off even while driving. There are many things that put you at increased risk for developing OSA. Male gender and increasing age are two of them. Having a physiologically narrower airway or chronic nasal congestion can be as well. Being overweight, having elevated blood pressure, smoking or having a history of asthma also increase risk of developing OSA. If you have some of the symptoms mentioned here or are concerned with your risk of having or developing OSA, you should see your primary care provider to discuss further evaluation. Testing is typically easy and may even be able to be done at home.

Hillsdale Community Thrift By Hännah Sayles

n autumn of 2018, our community gained an asset. Brian and Melissa DesJardin felt God leading them into a new direction. They prayed and Missy recalls that she “…felt that with God’s help, I could do better for this community.” Missy got in touch with the owner of the vacant building on the corner of Mechanic Street and Carleton Road and worked out a plan for free occupancy through the first six months with affordable rent after that. Within two years, Hillsdale Community Thrift signed a land contract to own the building. “I’ve always had a deep desire to help people,” said Missy. “If you are able to help, then you are morally obligated to do so.” November 14 marked the three-year anniversary of helping people for Hillsdale Community Thrift. Their slogan— “nonprofit helping nonprofits”—is one of their greatest accomplishments. Keeping everything local is their goal while taking financial burden off local businesses who are trying to help the community also. By partnering with nonprofits such as DHS, CAA , Love INC, Do’Chas II, and Integro (to name a few), they are helping provide items for those in need. These local agen-

cies refer clients with needs to Hillsdale Community Thrift where they receive essential household items for free. “If the local nonprofit shares a need, HCT will be there to provide it. All of this is possible because the community has stepped up and donated items or come in to shop, thus supporting this mission.” HCT sells items donated by the community and their profits are given to the nonprofits of Hillsdale County, keeping everything local and right here in our community. They strive to keep their prices reasonable. On a normal day, they sell between 400 and 600 items and their average price range sits at about $2.21. Missy says with a look of amazement, “The amount of donations that come through is unbelievable. The community support has been so wonderful. That’s why we like to honor keeping the prices reasonable.” When asked what items can be donated, Missy said, “Pretty much anything. Really the only items we cannot take are mattresses, old box TVs and weapons.” She wants the community to know that if there is clothing you are wanting to donate but you don’t think it’s up to par, they still want it. They will recycle them. “Anything we can’t sell, we recycle so it

doesn’t end up in a landfill,” she says. As for goals, the HCT store is now launching “Love Bucks” to help people to feel their worth, become part of the team, and to earn things they want. If people meet certain income criteria, they will be eligible to earn Love Bucks for the things they would like. They are now offering “The Loyalty Program” as well, where you sign in with your phone number and it keeps track of purchases. Every 100 points = $5 off your next purchase. Tips for preventing

Winter Injuries With winter comes the obvious: cold, snow, traffic, shoveling, etc. But, did you know that winter is also synonymous with injuries? The good news is that nearly all of these injuries are preventable! Get ready to enjoy the season by following our guide to preventing winter injuries.

Slipping on Ice/Snow Whether it’s day or night, ice can be difficult to see and what looks like water pooled on the pavement can actually be a sheet of ice. You could step off the curb and right onto a slippery ice patch. When this happens, severe injury can occur if you fall to the ground. You may be able to recover and only skid briefly, but even if you don’t end up falling, you can wrench your back or experience another kind of injury in your attempt to recover. Anyone is in danger of injuring themselves by falling or slipping on ice or snow, but seniors are especially at risk. In fact, according to the CDC, falls are the leading cause of injury among older Americans, and winter weather conditions only exacerbate that concern. How to Prevent Slip and Fall Injuries • Wear proper footwear made for icy and snowy conditions. • Keep your stride shorter and avoid long steps. • Slow things down — try not to rush or run outdoors. 26

• Keep de-icer or sand on hand for slippery walkways. • In case of injury, always have your cell phone handy. • If you need to do outdoor chores, take your time. Muscle Strain from Shoveling Snow One of the most injury-inducing winter activities is shoveling snow. Combine the fact that it’s a physically demanding activity with bitter cold temperatures and it’s a recipe for injury. How to Prevent Shoveling Injuries Shoveling doesn’t need to end in injury; make sure to follow our simple tips for a safe winter: • Warm-Up Stretch – Focus on the legs, back, shoulders, and biceps as they are the most common muscle strains. • Understand Your Limits – In order to get the job done quicker, we sometimes overfill the shovel and it causes trouble. Start small and work your way up slowly. Once you’ve reached your limit, understand it and don’t overfill. • Take Your Time – When we rush shoveling, we risk injury in a few different ways. First of all, cracks in the pavement can cause the shovel to stop suddenly, causing injury to the hands/wrist. Slower shoveling scoops will minimize this impact. When we shovel quickly we tend to “throw” the snow. This can cause excess stress on your shoulder/back/ legs causing a muscle strain. Remember, lift with your legs! • Proper Attire – Dress warmly and make sure your body is covered (especially your lower back). Check the tread of your boots to make sure they have sufficient grip. Wear a winter hat and gloves. If you suffer a winter injury, it’s important to first assess the severity level. Sometimes muscle injuries can be treated with ibuprofen and by applying ice or a heating pad or taking a warm bath. However, more severe injuries will need to be treated immediately by a professional.

Today I write about three women authors with three very different and inspiring stories.

Kabul Beauty School, An American Woman Goes Behind the Veil author Deborah Rodriguez (from Holland, Michigan) brings us an incredible true story of her experiences in Afghanistan. When the United States went into Afghanistan in 2002 after the fall of the Taliban, author Deborah took emergency and disaster relief training with a nonprofit organization and traveled there. When word spread that there was a westernstyle hairdresser in town, she quickly discovered her popularity among the Afghan women. Her observations of their needs led her to start the Kabul Beauty School. Through the charitable donations of Paul Mitchell Products, Vogue, Clairol, and monetary donations from people in the United States, she was able to locate a building for her beauty school. She interviewed hundreds of women and was able to train 25 women for each of her three classes. We are introduced to Roshanna, Nahrda, Shaz. Their lives revolve around arranged marriages when they were age twelve to older men they’d never met, living with first wives and mothersin-law who dominated and beat them. Their husbands show no affection and administer daily beatings, and some are sequestered in their compounds for years! There’s no divorce for a woman without losing custody of her children. This is a complicated culture, and now, with the current take-over of the Taliban once again, you can only imagine what is to become of our brave sisters. Pray for them. On a happier note, author Linda Greenlaw writes her true story The Lobster Chronicles. She is also the author of The Hungry Ocean in which she worked as a swordfish fisherman for seventeen years. Wanting to settle down

and start a family of her own, she returned home to her island off the Maine coast, Isle au Haut in Penobscot Bay (regarded as the lobster capital of the world). The year-round population is 47 (half of whom she is related to). It consists of a post office, general store, one-room schoolhouse, town hall that seconds as the school gym, one church, and a fish co-op. That’s it! Her boat, the Mattie Belle, is a 35-foot lobster boat and her retired 71-year-old father is her “sternman.” I was amazed at the amount of physical labor required in this profession and by her endurance, both mental and physical. Income is, of course, dependent upon a good season’s catch. You will learn lots about a woman’s role in this very interesting profession. Words of Our Father is a true story written by a local Adrian author, Debi Dickson Wagner. I was invited to attend her book club meeting where her new publication was discussed. I was treated to a lively, interesting discussion! The book is the love story of her parents, Ken and Noreen. As a child, Ken lived through an awful decade in the dust bowl of South Dakota. Noreen’s folks ended up in Assumption, Ohio, owning and running The Irwin Restaurant. After meeting at a roller rink, they were married, had six children, and settled in the farming community of Waldron, Michigan. The title of the book takes on its own meaning (which “Father” she refers to). We read that fourteen years after his death, their father speaks to author Debi and her sister with a message for his beloved wife, now 86. Simultaneously … twice! Got me a Big Joe bean bag chair the other day. It was a bargain on Marketplace, but it needed a bean fill-up. Because the chair was so cheap, buying more beans still made it a good deal. Have you ever had a good deal that went bad? I did, and it was enough to put me over the edge.

you get near it. Those beans scooched to the baseboards, up the walls, onto the furniture, and absolutely anywhere and everywhere else. Our problems may have been intensified by the fact that we forgot to shut off the overhead fan before starting. Won’t forget that again!

I love to read and wanted a comfortable chair I could throw myself into and not have to worry about getting it dirty or sliding cushions or any of that stuff. It was gonna be my “happy place.” My favorite son-in-law (he’s my only son-inlaw, but I’m not sure he’s put those two facts together yet!) has a Big Joe that I love to sit in when I go to his house; thus, my decision to go with a Big Joe. I texted Samantha to ask how they re-filled Joseph’s Big Joe. She didn’t give a lot of details, but said it was definitely a two-man job. Unfortunately, she did not say a word about spilling the beans.

We left the beans where they were knowing there would be more to follow. We started pouring the beans from the plastic bag into the chair. They came out a little faster than anticipated and once again flew to all corners of the room. My husband decided to put his hand in the bag and try to force the beans into the bowels of the bag. He pulled his hand out and half the beans were stuck to his arm. He tried to wipe them down his arm back into the bag, but they either stuck to his hand or joined the beans already on the floor. I decided to just go for it and kept pouring; I’d deal with the aftermath once my husband had calmed down and de-beaned himself. I poured as my husband shoved. It was obvious this plan of action was not working well at all.

My beans arrived and I wrangled my husband into helping me. Asking for his help was probably my first mistake. It might have been better to have flagged down a passing motorist, but I had already asked my husband so I was stuck with the results, which, by the way, were disastrous. First, we unzipped the bag and tried to shake down the beans that were already in there. Ya know when you’re shaking something down how you lift up to shake down? Yeah, don’t do that. We had beans bouncin’ out and around and because they’re actually styrofoam pieces, they flew everywhere. If you’ve ever chased styrofoam, you know it’s not easy to gather up. It either sticks to you or it scoots away when 34

We used the whole bag of beans. All of ‘em. E-v-e-r-y one of them, but very few actually ended up in the chair itself. That baby is as flat or flatter now than it was when we started. It’s been five weeks now and we still find beans on the furniture, in our food, attached to the dog. Even found some in my underwear yesterday. My husband? He’s not talking to me and my “happy place”? It’s no longer happy. This was an utter and complete disaster and it was enough to put me right over the edge.

You know the holidays are here when the Christmas Express returns! This popular treat sells out quickly, so make your reservations early. These trips have been changed to a smaller train and a shorter run which we think will make things more enjoyable. The Christmas Express will be running on December 4, 5, 11, and 12. Departure is from the Coldwater Depot and there will be three each day: 11 am, 12:30 pm, and 2 pm. Our steam-powered train takes you back to days gone by. Children can visit with Santa Claus while aboard the train. Although the train is heated, our equipment is older so we recommend you make sure to dress for the weather. (You can always take off a layer if you’re too warm, but we don’t want our passengers to freeze!) Ticket prices are $20 for ages 12 and up, $13 for ages 3 to 11, and children 2 and under ride free. Souvenirs and concessions will be available.

For those that want some sound entertainment, Tibbits Entertainment Series presents Siberian Solstice, a Trans Siberian Orchestra Tribute December 18th. Last seen on the Tibbits stage in December of 2019, Siberian Solstice provides an exciting and inspirational Christmas show with music performed in the style of the nationally acclaimed Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO). Enhanced by lighting and video, Siberian Solstice will feature traditional Christmas music and classical pieces presented with a rock feel using electronic keyboards, drums, and guitars. Siberian Solstice has 8 members on stage to accurately reproduce the TSO style. Safety notice: Restrooms are available only before and after the ride inside the station. There will be sanitizing stations at the platform and on board. The trains will be sold to half-capacity and face masks are optional.

CAMP COURAGE Hospice of Hillsdale County offers a one-day grief camp for children in the community who have experienced the loss of a loved one. The day camp is offered each year in June on the Saturday after Father’s Day (rain or shine). The campers are offered structured and free-time activities designed to give them tools to cope with their grief. Activities include: swimming, crafts, snacks and meals, waterslide and much more! Camp Courage is staffed by trained adult volunteers, hospice staff, a registered nurse and our bereavement counselor. This is a special day that the children love and is offered at no cost.

Why a good credit score is important when buying a home Homebuyers today have more than just a competitive market keeping them from the home of their dreams. A low credit score can hurt their chances of securing a mortgage and take them out of the running for making a competitive offer.

Following the first six months, a person’s credit score is very low. Time is needed to generate a good credit score. Credit scores range from 300-850. The lower the number, the worse the credit score. Credit scores are based on a person’s payment history and their ability to make payments on time. Having a series of late payments will negatively affect a person’s credit score. Scores also depend on the amount of debt a person owes including credit card debt, car loans, and school loans. There are ways to improve a credit score slowly and steadily. Unfortunately, the key word there is slowly. Credit scores do not increase quickly. As unfair as it may be, it doesn’t take much to lower a credit score, but it takes a lot of time and effort to raise one back up.

Pay bills on time. This is a surefire way to see a credit score go up. To help ensure on-time payments, consider enrolling in an auto payment program through a credit card or bank account. Reduce debt. This one can be difficult, but lowering the amount of money carried on a credit card (or credit cards), student loans, or auto loans can eventually bring up a bad credit score.

Know your score. Many people may think they have good credit (or bad credit) when the opposite is actually true. Be sure to check through all three credit agencies— BRONSON Equifax, Experian and TransUnion—to 517-858-140 make sure there are no outlying problems. A person’s credit score will affect any type of loan they want to secure from mortgages and auto loans to cell phone plans.

So, what should home buyers know about their credit score? In a word, everything. A person first starts getting a credit score six months after they have opened their first line of credit. This usually occurs when a credit card is opened, but it can also take place when securing an auto loan or mortgage.

So, what can someone do?

A credit score of 620 or higher should allow a person to qualify for a home loan. While a conventional loan can be secured with a score as low as 620, a higher score is preferable. Those with higher scores will also get a break on the cost of private mortgage insurance (PMI) which is required if a down payment is less than 20 percent of the loan.

There is quite a bit more involved in each of these loans. Those looking to buy a home should first check their credit score and look into what kind of loan they can secure before placing an offer. That way, when the perfect home comes along, they can make an offer and, hopefully, soon be moving into the home of their dreams!

She has been a top-producing agent in Hillsdale County every year since. In 1995 she opened RE/MAX Preferred Realty, initially operating out of her home. She chose the RE/MAX Franchise because of their commitment to provide hands-on support to their brokerages and Realtors, and it is also the most tech-savvy franchise, educating and improving their agents’ individual businesses. Daughter Alicia is an Associate Broker herself with 23 years of experience in real estate. And, continuing the family tradition, Alicia’s daughter Abby is also studying to be a licensed real estate agent.

While working out of Cathy’s home for a few months, they were building-out their office space at Trillium Plaza, located in the Jonesville Industrial Park. The office moved from there to its current location, a welcoming ranch home at 4140 Beck Road, Jonesville. Cathy attributes the success of their office in part to the personal and professional compatibility of their team, which includes Pat Rising and Ron Aemisegger. Both have been with RE/MAX Preferred Realty from its beginning, which means they have worked together for over 25 years along with Tami Morris who

joined the team in 2017. Working as a team for this long has assisted each of them to help one another provide the best service. This high level of service has resulted in many, many repeat customers and customer referrals, and that has helped keep this agency on solid ground for decades. Cathy and Alicia have earned high honors for their real estate work, having both been inducted into the “RE/MAX Hall of Fame.” Cathy has also received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Hillsdale County Board of Realtors, RE/MAX of Michigan, and RE/MAX International. Both women been selected as “Realtor of the Year” from the Hillsdale County Board of Realtors and their RE/MAX team has been recognized in the county level “Hillsdale County People’s Choice Award” for several years. One annual adventure that was interrupted by the pandemic is the yearly RE/MAX Hot Air Balloon launch over the City of Hillsdale, a community favorite that they are planning to resume in 2022. “We have committed balloon chasers, they are so excited to participate,” says Alicia. “They join us at our

office for the test balloon, which indicates the wind direction, then with map in hand, we plan our course to fly over the City of Hillsdale. This large group of on-lookers joins us at our designated starting point, participating in the balloon inflating process and launch. Then, a caravan of cars follows the balloon flight while listening to a play-by-play on WCSR radio, featuring Bob Flynn.” Initially, the agents took turns riding in the balloon; in the past few years there have been drawings for community members to enjoy the ride, which has been very well-received. Family is important to Cathy and Alicia. Cathy’s husband Bob is co-owner of D-P Equipment in Camden, and the couple celebrated their 45th anniversary in October. Bob lends a hand when needed, which is often. Alicia and her partner Matt have, besides daughter Abby, a son Graham. She and Matt also own and operate CrossFit Timoro in Hillsdale.

During this upcoming season of holiday celebration, many are starting to plan the whirlwind activity of baking, decorating, crafting, and careful thoughtful selection of gift giving. Gifts don’t necessarily need to be expensive or elaborate. The best gift exchanges are the ones that have taken some thoughtful insight and meaning to the recipient. This hit home when my best friend Jill stopped over, gift in hand. Now Jill knows of my fondness for a ceramic holiday tree and my fall craving for candy corn. (Yes, I know I’m in the minority here when it comes to candy corn.) Thoughtful girl that she is, she gave me the combined gift of a ceramic Halloween candy corn tree! Years ago when I was a teenager (okay, years and years ago), on Christmas Day my grandfather Maurice gifted my grandmother Mable a special and memorable gift. In the 1960s, my grandma Mable was an established beauty salon owner, now described as “stylist.” Grandma opened her gift with excited anticipation, only to find a new pair of electric hair clippers. Her disappointment was obvious. Just what every woman wanted. Not! Grandpa encouraged her to look closer in the box for the instructions. There, in the molded styrofoam shell, she found a beautiful opal ring. I’ll never forget the look on her face, and her restored belief in Grandpa’s thoughtfulness. As an only child, my mom is now the keeper of that ring which means my sister and I will have to “rock, scissors and paper” for it some day! The first year my husband and I were engaged we bought a house. My friend Michelle and I lived in the house, while Hubs lived with his folks. (I know. Olden days. Respect for parents.

Didn’t live together until married. Yada, yada, yada.) I wanted to surprise my then fiancé with a Craftsman table saw. But how to hide it from him? It was in a big, heavy box. I rolled it end to end to wrap it in Christmas paper to cover the contents label, and shoved it in the laundry room. Then I came up with a story that it was a surprise from Michelle’s dad to her mom—a new microwave oven and that her dad would pick it up on Christmas Eve. Hubs was surprised when he was offered to open the microwave gift, only to find a table saw. When I was in high school, we had a wonderful math teacher who wanted to share his love of downhill skiing with us small-town Jonesville kids. He arranged for a school bus to take us once a week to the Irish Hills for this experience. The cost was $5 a week for ski rental. That doesn’t sound like much now, but you have to remember in the early 1970s, minimum wage was $1.65 an hour. I loved the skiing trips, but didn’t know if I would be able to go regularly. My parents saw how much I enjoyed this experience and for Christmas that year I received $25 - enough to go skiing for five more trips!! Last year I tried to surprise Hubs with a gift certificate for an automatic starter for his truck. His truck is parked outside year-round, and I thought this would be the perfect gift! Well, imagine my surprise when he opened the gift certificate to announce that his truck already had this feature - he just never used it. So, sometimes a “thoughtful” surprise can backfire - Keeping Me in Stitches. Happiest of Holidays and Thoughtful Gifts to You All.

Rejection can spur redirection

I held my breath as my eyes darted over each word in the email. Rejection. The literary agent wanted to like my first chapter, but it did not grab her. It stings like a shot, but one from a kindhearted nurse. I appreciate the agent’s honesty. It pushes me to do better. Her rejection is my redirection. I shall launch into a vigorous rewrite of my first chapter. I want to seize the reader so they don’t put my book down. My novel wraps up with an unexpected but surprisingly possible twist. It leaves readers celebrating with smiles. But I need to rebuild the beginning to entice them to discover the joyous ending. The ending resolves each character and makes the reader break out in dance.

on improving. I can do this. I am rewriting my first Christian novel to give readers a group hug. We need a story with interconnecting hearts, encouragement to overcome, and sisterhood. This reminds me of John Mark in the Bible. Mark quit on his first missionary journey with Paul and Barnabas. Paul and Barnabas disputed over taking John Mark again. Two separate groups were sent out instead of one. Paul did not want to go with John Mark. Barnabas did. Years later, John Mark earned Paul’s respect. Near the end of Paul’s life, Paul asks for John Mark and said, “…he is helpful to me in my ministry,” (2 Timothy 4:11 NIV). John Mark heard criticism, but did not quit. He determined to improve and obviously matured.

But if the reader doesn’t thrill with the first chapter, they won’t read to the epic ending.

I read valid criticism. I choose not to give up. I hope to mature as an author and improve my storyline.

I choose to handle this rejection letter as my redirection letter. I won’t quit. I will rise up and write stronger and with grit. My initial wince while reading her criticism turned to set my mind

How to Use Concrete during the cold winter months

Construction projects big and small, both indoor and outside, are being completed when the weather dips into the 40s and 30s. Using concrete during this time may not seem like an option. It can be if you have the right information and procedures in place to ensure the concrete sets properly. Cold weather for concrete is when temperatures are below 40°F for more than three days in a row and the air temperature is not higher than 50° for no more than 12 hours during those three days. It is also imperative that concrete never be poured on frozen ground or if freezing temperatures will occur in the next 48 hours. Concrete poured when the ground is hard or covered with snow or ice will shift when it thaws, causing cracks and uneven surfaces.

If concrete sets at a lower temperature, it slows down the hydration process which will result in delayed set times and will also reduce the compressive strength of the concrete at the earliest stages. When the temperature drops below 40°, the set time more than doubles from when the concrete is first poured until its final set.

There are steps you can take to make sure your concrete pour is done correctly.

For other concrete pours, protect the surface of the concrete with several types of insulating materials. These could include insulating blankets or tarps, rigid board insulation or plastic covered in straw. To keep in heat, be sure to have at least 12 inches of straw and then cover the straw with another layer of plastic.

One step to take is to pour a drier mix, which is exactly as it sounds. This will reduce the water to cement ratio. A lower ratio will result in a shorter set time which will lead to stronger concrete.

When covering concrete for insulation purposes, it is important to weigh down whatever material you are using. This will not only keep excess water out but also keep the material from blowing off the concrete.

A very easy way to increase the temperature of your concrete is to increase the temperature of your water. However, do not use boiling water. This can often cause a flash set. This is a rapid beginning of the hydration process that cannot be stopped and will result in a loss of workability in the mortar.

Once concrete is fully cured, it is important not to remove all insulating material at once. Insulation should be removed slowly to avoid thermal shock. This will cause the surface to cool down much more rapidly than the interior of the concrete leading to stress and cracks.

The end of the year brings a lot of holiday fun, and I look forward to it every year. With that excitement also comes concern for the amount of extra money we typically spend as the holidays approach. Because of the added expenses the holidays bring, I’m always looking for ways to create holiday family fun while also staying within a budget.

Have a baking day. Baking can be a great way to spend time together and really feel the holiday spirit. There are lots of fun

Pick a favorite Christmas movie, pop some popcorn, make some hot cocoa, and snuggle in for a fun movie night. Make it a movie day and have a Christmas movie marathon.

6. Have a holiday-themed game night. Invite family or friends over and host a gamenight inspired by the holidays. There are adult- and kid-friendly ideas for holiday games online. You can also put a twist on traditional games to turn them into holiday fun. 7. Create a holiday-themed scavenger hunt. Scavenger hunts are perhaps one of our favorite activities. There are a lot of holiday-themed scavenger hunts online, but you could also have fun making one up to use around your home or outside.

8. Find a sledding spot. 9. Have a holiday books read-a-thon. Pick some of your favorite holiday stories, find a comfy spot around the house, grab a warm drink and snack, and enjoy reading by yourself or with your family. 10. Decorate your home and/or yard. While holiday decorations can be expensive, they definitely don’t have to be. You can make your own decorations with basic craft materials. Make an event of it and have the whole family join the decorat-ing fun. 11. Have a Christmas music dance party. There are a range of holiday songs out there that bring so much joy and holiday cheer. Crank up the music, turn down the lights, and have a fun family dance party. 12. Have a Christmas tree picnic. While my family and I have done most of the things on this list, we have not had a Christmas tree picnic, but I absolutely love the idea. I stumbled upon this idea on the internet and knew I had to add it to my list. Make a simple picnic meal, find a spot around the Christmas tree, and enjoy with your family. Doesn’t this list just make you want to start having some holiday fun right away? I know it does for me! I hope you are able to enjoy a few of these low-budget holiday ideas with those you love.

PET TALK Cold Weather Safety Tips

Exposure to winter’s dry, cold air and chilly rain, sleet, and snow can cause chapped paws and itchy, flaking skin, but these aren’t the only discomforts pets can suffer. Winter walks can become downright dangerous if chemicals from ice-melting agents are licked off of bare paws. To help prevent cold weather dangers from affecting your pet’s health, please heed the following advice from our experts: • Repeatedly coming out of the cold into the dry heat of your home can cause itchy, flaking skin. Keep your home humidified and towel dry your pet as soon as you come inside, paying special attention to the feet and in between the toes. Remove any snow balls from between the foot pads. • Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. If your dog is long-haired, simply trim him to minimize the clinging ice balls, salt crystals, and de-icing chemicals that can dry the skin, and don’t neglect the hair between the toes. If your dog is short-haired, consider getting a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear. • Bring a towel on long walks to clean off stinging, irritated paws. After each walk, wash and dry your pet’s feet and stomach to remove ice, salt and chemicals—and check for cracks in paw pads or redness between the toes. • Bathe your pets as little as possible during cold spells. Washing too often can remove essential oils and increase the chance of developing dry, flaky skin. If your pooch must be bathed, ask your vet to recommend a moisturizing shampoo and/or rinse.

• Massaging petroleum jelly or other paw protectants into paw pads before going outside can help protect from salt and chemical agents. Booties provide even more coverage and can also prevent sand and salt from getting lodged between bare toes and causing irritation. Use pet-friendly ice melts whenever possible. • Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to clean up any spills from your vehicle thoroughly and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol. • Pets burn extra energy by trying to stay warm in wintertime. Feeding your pet a little bit more during the cold weather months can provide much-needed calories and making sure you provide plenty of water to drink will help keep your pet well-hydrated and lessen the dry skin problem. • Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect. • Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your animals inside. If left outdoors, pets can freeze, become disoriented, and get lost, stolen, injured, or killed. In addition, don’t leave pets alone in a car during cold weather, as cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold and cause animals to freeze to death.

Know that this year is not going to look like years past, and that is perfectly fine.

Follow these “three C’s” recommended by Hospice Foundation of America grief expert Kenneth J. Doka, PhD, to help navigate your way through this difficult time. CHOOSE During the holidays, it’s easy to drift into activities that have the potential to increase your pain. You have choices. Decide what you want to be part of, who you want to be with, and what you want to do. You may also want to consider how to mark your loss during the holidays. During the holidays you may feel the presence of that person’s absence. Finding ways to recognize and acknowledge that individual can bring a positive focus to your grief. This may be done in a number of ways. Lighting a candle, creating a ritual, placing a memento on a tree, holding a moment of silence or a holiday toast are simple ways to acknowledge the losses felt so keenly this time of year. COMMUNICATE Discussing your choices with others, especially those affected by them, is important. They have

needs as well. Their ways of dealing with grief may be different. Traditions may come into play because they involve choices. Communication about them is important. The Smith family, for example, had a long discussion about how to handle the Christmas tree following the death of one of their children. COMPROMISE Each person deals with loss in his or her own particular way and therefore has different needs. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. Leaving space for compromise is important. For example, some people in the Smith family saw the Christmas tree as an important tribute to their late son and brother. Other family members felt it was disrespectful. They talked through each point of view, and decided to have a small tree—not in the central living room, but in the family room. Those who wanted to help decorate could, but those who chose not to would also be respected. Nothing changes the fact that the holidays can be especially difficult while grieving. But if you choose your actions, communicate your choices to others, and find suitable compromises, you may find that they become bearable and that you have renewed strength and hope. Brighten someone’s Christmas by fostering a child by Kimm Burger KB Law Office

I personally love the Christmas season. I start planning my decorations in about November and am chomping at the bit to get the lights strung on my house and the Christmas trees decorated. Yes, I said trees—I am one of those people. Besides the lights and the decorations, an important part of the holiday season are the times we get to visit our loved ones and be with those who care about us. We get to exchange gifts, attend church services, eat delicious meals, and create wonderful memories. The holidays are usually a time of hope and love; however, there are children that will not get to experience those same feelings. Millions of children are placed in foster care or experience homes that are filled with abuse or neglect. In Michigan alone there are 13,000 children in the foster care system. These children will not get to experience the feelings of love and hopefulness that come along with the Christmas season because of the situations they are placed in. They are the children you see every day, but don’t really notice. They try to hide their hurt and disappointment, but it is there. All throughout the country, there are limited homes for placement of children who need care and comfort. Fostering children is not for the faint at heart, but it is one of the most rewarding and selfless acts one can undertake. Hillsdale, Branch, and Lenawee counties need loving foster care homes for children in need.

When thinking about the holiday season and all that you have and are grateful for, think about those children that do not have homes, that are being bounced around from home to home, or have parents that cannot properly care for them. There are a multitude of programs that can aid in purchasing gifts for children, agencies that you can donate to. As an example, Foster Closet in Branch County offers clothing, toys, and furniture such as cribs to foster care families; this non-profit is run completely on donations. Other agencies include Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) which is a non-profit organization made up of volunteers who give support to children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect and many of these children are in the foster care system. CASA volunteers help these children be seen and heard. However, the most important way you can give to these children is to open up your home to them. Contact the Jackson, Lenawee, Hillsdale Community Action Agency at 517-437-3346 (Hillsdale) or 517-263-7861 (Lenawee); Catholic Charities of Jackson, Hillsdale, and Lenawee at 517-263-2191; or other social work agencies and let them know you would be interested in fostering a child. Not only would you be helping a child have some stability in their life, but you would also be providing them with the love and joy they are desperately seeking.

EXPERIENCE CULTURAL FESTIVITIES Michigan has events celebrating all different holidays and traditions to enjoy during the winter months. Start off by hearing the beautiful voices of the Mona Shores High School Choir in Muskegon as they form America’s largest singing Christmas tree at the Frauenthal Center for the Performing Arts. In & Out of The Garden A Bit of Christmas Legend and Lore By Susan Betz As the year comes to a close and the holidays begin, it is traditional to bring greenery into the home. The ancient custom of decorating our homes with evergreens during the winter holidays dates to antiquity. Since the beginning of history, every culture has held some type of celebration in midwinter. While specific customs and legends vary, the underlying meanings continue to be true. Evergreen boughs, wreaths, garlands, and trees symbolized eternal life, prosperity, and rebirth when the world outdoors was cold and asleep during the dark winter months. European settlers brought the custom of using holly at Christmas to the United States. Due to our American holly’s (I. Opaca) similarity to English or European holly (Ilex aquifolium), English settlers used it for holiday decorating. Today, the availability of hundreds of named cultivars, including one called “Merry Christmas,” attests to the American holly’s enduring popularity in and out of the garden. In Great Britain, people would place a holly sprig in each of their beehives during the holidays in honor of an old legend that when Baby Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the bees sang a song in his honor, a song they have been humming ever since. Holly and ivy have long been used together in holiday decorations. Tradition holds holly to be a man’s plant, with its thorny leaves and hard edges, and ivy a woman’s, given that it appears gentler and more feminine with its softly-edged leaves and clinging growth habit. In the language of flowers, holly represents “foresight,” and ivy stands for “friendship.” Ivy was used as a decoration for churches and homes at Christmas, but only for the outer passages and doorways, where it was put up on Christmas Eve and taken down on Candlemas Eve.

Rosemary is believed to be one of the plants to give shelter to the Holy Family as Herod’s soldiers were pursuing them. When they stopped to rest for the night, Mary threw her blue cloak over a bush of rosemary covered with white blossoms, and when she removed her cloak the next morning, the white flowers had turned blue. This legend prompted mothers in the Middle Ages to slip a sprig of rosemary into their baby’s cradle so that the child would have a sweet and peaceful sleep. It is said to bring happiness to families who use it to perfume the house on Christmas night. Another legend says that a sprig of rosemary, particularly in the bath, made one “lusty, lively, joyful and youngly.” Many charming legends exist about the Christmas tree. One story relates that, as Christianity spread across northern Europe, Faith, Hope and Charity were sent down from heaven to locate and light a tree that was as high as hope, as great as love, as sweet as charity, and with the sign of the cross on every bough. Their search ended when they found the “fir,” lit by the radiance of the stars, and it became the first Christmas tree. The evergreen tree is usually called a fir in plant legends because “fir” was once a layman’s term for all evergreens and few of those who translated legends knew botany. Pine, fir, and spruce make up a group of similar trees and shrubs within a larger group of conifers (cone-bearing) trees, all categorized as evergreen plants and classed together under Pinaceae. There are approximately 33 million real Christmas trees sold in North America each year. Spruce, fir and pine are the most popular choices for Christmas trees. December is the perfect time of year to explore the differences and similarities among these trees because you can find them all in one location—your local Christmas tree farm or nursery!

In these magical snowy days, we all want to go outside and play with the snow. There are many homes with an important seasonal visitor, the snowman. Besides the snowmen made out of snow, there are a lot of interesting ideas how to make snowman decorations for your home. You can make them out of paper, plates, papers, or metal. Hang the snowman decoration on your front door or just decorate the Christmas tree to look like a snowman.

There’s no Christmas without holly berries! Holly leaves and berries are the best way to fill your home with holiday spirit, so why not use them for décor? Holly sprigs with berries are amazing for creating cool wreaths, whether they are natural or artificial ones. Just remember that natural ones won’t last that long.

EQUIPMENT — Metal cookie cutters — Plastic Straws or dowel rods cut into 2” pieces — Twine INGREDIENTS 4 C bird seed 4 packets unflavored gelatin 1/2 C cold water 1/2 C boiling water 2 TBSP corn syrup INSTRUCTIONS • Rinse your bird seed • We rinsed the birdseed to get all the dust and small particles off it. For our recipe we used 4 cups because we wanted to make a large batch of ornaments. You could always cut this amount in half if you didn’t want quite as many. Our final batch was 12 ornaments. • We used an unflavored gelatin from Walmart. First add 4 packets of the powder to 1/2 cup of cold water. Stir until mixed. Then add 1/2 cup of boiling water. Mix well and let sit for 2-3 minutes. • Combine the bird seed with the gelatin mixture, stirring well. Add the corn syrup. Continue stirring until all the bird seed is coated well and becomes firm. If your mixture seems too wet, add small amounts of bird seed as needed. • Refrigerate this mixture for 7-8 minutes. • Once the mixture is firm and begins to hold shape, you can start filling the cookie cutters. Place them on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet. Use the back of a spoon to pack the mixture into each cookie cutter.

These easy bird seed ornaments are a great kids activity for any age. We made them as a homeschool project, but they would make great gifts for bird lovers or bird watchers too. We made them to feed our feathered friends in the cold winter months, and they are a great alternative to a regular bird feeder.

• Push a straw or dowel rod into the shape to create a hole for the twine. You’ll want to center these holes, especially on shapes that might end up top heavy. • Refrigerate your ornaments overnight to allow them to set. • Once your bird seed ornaments are firm and can easily be removed from the cookie cutters, you can remove them and add the twine for hanging.

While that may be true, it’s important to make sure that your giving isn’t one-sided, especially in relationships, romantic or otherwise. One of the key components to any relationship is the ability to have a functioning give and take system. This doesn’t necessarily have to be an exchange of goods—it’s about having reciprocity for the effort you put forth. Here are some tips to keep in mind regarding the balance in your relationship. Ask For It Say you have been struggling with keeping up with housework, meals, and being present during book club. If your partner would take on a few household tasks, that would really help lighten your load and allow you to breathe easier. Ask them for help! You are in a partnership together and chances are the other person isn’t a mind reader. Communicate what is going on in the situation and ask your partner to take on some new tasks. If you’re on the other side of this equation and you see a shift in your partner or see them struggling, ask them if they need help. Try to be mindful and really look at all of the ways your partner is giving and you might be amazed at all of the things they take on. True Balance While it’s important to have a working give and take system set up, it doesn’t necessarily have to be an equitable distribution of tasks. This isn’t where you say, “I did laundry five times in a row, now it’s your turn to do it five times in a row.” Take stock of all of the things you do for your partner and all of the things they give back. As long as there aren’t any glaring discrepancies in your relationship balance, you’re doing OK. And if you happen to see that there has been an imbalance for quite some time (without attribution to things like the onset of new work projects, new obligations, or new life situations) speak up. Work toward what your normal balance is with your partner. Gratitude Be thankful for your partner and the efforts they put forth. Chances are, they are doing the best they can with what they have. If you’re feeling a little grumpy or you doin’t think that they “get it,” make an effort to figure out one another’s love language. Because we often express love in the way we want to receive it, it could just be that you two are speaking two different languages. Learn what speaks best to your partner and do your best to show how much you care about them. Finding balance in your relationship will likely look different than what your friends have in their relationships and that is OK. Do what works best for you and find joy in both giving and receiving this holiday season and beyond.

Homemade Truffles What is a chocolate truffle? A chocolate truffle is a soft, smooth, silky, and typically round candy that’s coated in melted chocolate, nuts, cocoa, sprinkles, or coconut. It has a soft center that melts in your mouth and is a common homemade or store-bought gift during the holidays. How are chocolate truffles made? Chocolate truffles are very simple to make, yet they’re heavenly to eat! Plus, they look so pretty in a box to give as a homemade gift which is likely why they’re so popular around the holidays. Chocolate, cream and a small amount of butter are melted together, then left to firm up so it can be scooped and rolled into balls. The balls are then rolled in one of the coatings mentioned above or anything else you can think of that will coat the piece and sounds delicious! Rolling them can get a little sticky and messy, so it’s important to chill the filling well before rolling it into balls. You can also purchase truffle molds to help with this process. Also, because these are made with such few ingredients, it’s crucial that you use high-quality ingredients. The chocolate, cream, and butter should all be “real” with no artificial ingredients. Look for chocolate that has at least 62% cocoa, organic cream, and REAL butter. Once the truffles are made, they can be put into candy boxes and given as gifts. Truffle Recipe These homemade chocolate truffles are extra creamy with the addition of butter. After mixing the ingredients together, let the mixture set in the refrigerator, then roll into balls. You can coat in your favorite toppings and add lots of fun flavors, too! Ingredients • Two 4-ounce quality chocolate bars (226g), very finely chopped • 2/3 cup (160ml) heavy cream optional: 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened to room temperature • optional: ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract • toppings: unsweetened cocoa powder, sprinkles, crushed nuts, melted or tempered chocolate

Instructions Place the chocolate in a heat-proof bowl. Set aside. Heat the heavy cream until it is simmering. You can heat it on the stove or in the microwave. Add the butter, if using, to the chocolate and pour the heavy cream evenly on top. Let the warm cream and chocolate sit for 5 minutes. Add the vanilla extract, then stir until the chocolate has completely melted. Place a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface to avoid condensation and refrigerate for 1-2 hours. Tip: Pour into a flat shallow dish, such as an 8×8 inch baking pan, so the mixture set evenly and quickly. Scoop the set truffle mixture into 2 teaspoon-sized mounds. A cookie scoop is the perfect size. For larger truffles, 1 Tablespoon size mounds. Roll each into balls. This gets a little sticky, so see the tips above. Roll each into toppings, if desired. Cover tightly and store truffles at room temperature for 3-4 days or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Remove before serving, as truffles taste best at room temperature! Notes: Flavors: Instead of vanilla extract, use ½ teaspoon raspberry, coconut, orange, peppermint, or strawberry extract. Or, leave out the extract and add 1-2 tablespoons of your favorite liqueur. Topping Ideas: Roll your truffles in ingredients that complement the flavors of the chocolate. Add orange zest to dark chocolate, coconut makes a great coating, or try chopped hazelnuts for nice crunch! The possibilities are endless! Crockpot Candy INGREDIENTS 1 pound roasted salted peanuts 1 pound roasted unsalted peanuts 1 pound semisweet chocolate chips 2 pounds white almond bark broken into pieces, or can use white candy melts ½ cup holiday sprinkles INSTRUCTIONS Place the peanuts in a crock pot. Add the chocolate chips and almond bark on top. Cook on LOW for 1 hour. Remove lid and stir. Cover and cook for an additional 30 minutes. Stir until thoroughly combined. Drop tablespoon-sized dollops of the candy onto parchment paper, top with sprinkles. Cool until firm, then serve. Aunt Rose’s Fantastic Butter Toffee INGREDIENTS 2 cups unblanched whole almonds 11 ounces milk chocolate, chopped 1 cup butter, cubed 1 cup sugar 3 tablespoons cold water DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350°. In a shallow baking pan, toast almonds until golden brown, 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cool.

Pulse chocolate in a food processor until finely ground (do not overprocess); transfer to a bowl. Pulse almonds in food processor until coarsely chopped. Sprinkle 1 cup of almonds over bottom of a greased 15x10x1-in. pan. Sprinkle with 1 cup of chocolate. In a heavy saucepan, combine butter, sugar and water. Cook over medium heat until a candy thermometer reads 290° (softcrack stage), stirring occasionally. Immediately pour mixture over almonds and chocolate in pan. Sprinkle with remaining chocolate and almonds. Refrigerate until set; break into pieces. www.tasteofhome.com
