La Clusaz and the Amaury Sport Organisation (organizer of the Tour de France) revealed during the Press conference of the Roc d’Azur on the 11th October last year that they would be going into partnership to create the Roc des Alpes. Taking place on 14th to 16th June 2013, the Roc des Alpes promises to be a spectacular event for mountain bike enthusiasts, including 10 different MTB races right in the heart of the Aravis, and as ever in La Clusaz it will be fun for all the family. From 14th to 16th June A spectacular new event is coming to La Clusaz which will consist of 3 days of MTB races in the Aravis. The weekend will be packed with events and shows for mountain bike enthusiasts of all ages and their families.
25th August The legendary race of 27km with a 1000m difference in altitude. The course works its way round the pastures above the village in an interesting, yet picturesque challenge. The choice is yours whether to run or walk! With 2,000 people taking part every year it’s an event worth seeing or taking part in!

13th July The traditional annual ball on the eve of Bastille day.
8th September The Foire de la Croix is the first autumn fair of the district of Thônes, celebrating the end of the summer pastures as the animals start their descent towards their winter residences in the lower farms. Come and watch as the cows of the breed “Abondances” are paraded to be judged, and the best reblochon cheese is voted. End the day with evening entertainment with the local farmers.
Aravis and Company From 22th to 26th July Get ready for 5 days and 4 nights of family fun which will shake up your image of the mountains. 4 resorts; all of them dancing to a different theme, all of them full of surprises.
August Fête au village 3th and 4th August A weekend of games, entertainment and shows for the kids, followed by a lively traditional ball that goes long into the night. The local Reblochon and craftsman Festival 11th August A festival celebrating local craftsmanship, the history of local farming and of course the famous Reblochon cheese. Come and witness the making of the cheese in the afternoon and have the first taste of freshly produced Reblochon. All things local are celebrated with folk dancing, traditional bread making and a parade through the village.

Ten races will showcase the different MTB disciplines (cross-country, downhill, ride and enduro) over three days, with the grand finale, the 55 km cross-country race, taking place on Sunday, June 16th. With a programme packed with spectacular shows and events for both young and old, the whole family is sure to enjoy their weekend together. There will also be a multitude of big name mountain bike specialists present, keen to let you try out the latest equipment and products from the world of mountain biking.

Cross-Country (known as « XC »): physical and tough! An up and down course against the clock to take you over some of the most panoramic and beautiful terrain in the region, different distances are proposed according to your level and time limits will apply, no sleeping in the mountains! Enduro: pure riding pleasure A downhill event which combines timed races and non-timed linking sectors. The start line is high above the resort, and the use of the ski lifts will allow you to reduce spending energy on climbs and to concentrate on each specific race. The winner is the person who has the shortest cumulative time in the races. This technical event requires a suitable bike and good handling skills.
Roc Ruelles: the evening trial A 1 km urban circuit with stairs, steps, tight turns and big crowds. The two riders in each team take turns in an attempt to complete as many laps as possible in each of the 30-minute races. With fancy dress allowed, the heats and finals of this original and fun event are sure to please the crowds at the end of the day. Ride: Family time. A non-timed course of limited technical difficulty. Participate with family, friends or alone and at your own pace. Gourmet ride: the circuit for gourmets ! A non-timed course with local produce handed out in the feeding zones instead of the traditional provisions(fruit, cereal bars, etc.). Come and discover the region and its produce, not forgetting the Reblochon! All Mountain Ride A non-timed downhill ride. The course follows less technical tracks than the Enduro, but be prepared to handle your bike on steep single tracks.

• Can you sum up the Roc des Alpes in La Clusaz in a few words? Le Roc des Alpes is a concept which has been adapted from an event in the South of France that has been up and running for a long time called the « le Roc d’Azur ». For the last 30 years, the event has been thrilling people with its combination of races, fun trials and spectacular entertainment and it is now wellknown on a world wide scale. It was a natural progression for Amaury Sport Organisation to extend the success of this extraordinary event to another region and it was La Clusaz that caught our eye. • What does the Roc des Alpes in La Clusaz involve? 10 different races will be organised over 3 days, in all the disciplines, including cross-country, marathon, endurance and downhill. The idea is that everyone can participate and try out any of the mountain biking disciplines while enjoying the countryside in and around the Aravis and La Clusaz.

There will of course be the opportunity to try out up-to-date equipment and bikes which will be put on show by the many partners who were keen to be part of this event. It’s a great chance to be able to put the different bikes to the test on proper tracks before buying. • Why La Clusaz ? The resort was looking to develop an annual event, like the Roc, to publicize its mountain biking area and its summer season and La Clusaz really is a magnificent resort. The Aravis is one of the most well-known mountain ranges in the Haute Savoie and we hope that the Roc des Alpes will put the beauty of this region, which is so perfectly adapted to mountain biking into the spotlight.

In summer as in winter, the Alps are one big giant playground and the summer is just made for mountain biking. MTB in La Clusaz is all about taking things at your own pace, should you prefer to hurl down the downhill tracks, climb up the other side or take a gentle ride round the alpine village with friends or family. La Clusaz will grow with the Roc des Alpes in line with the scale of this event and will continue to improve and develop its mountain biking tracks over the years.
New for
2013
The MTB area in La Clusaz is already wellknown for the beauty and variety of its circuits, and this year they are adding 2 new sections: Following the work done on the ski lifts, the Loup downhill track has been extended to include a new junction with the GrenĂŞche track.
A new blue cross country track has been developed, leaving from the CrĂŞt du Merle and arriving at Les Confins over the Voret combe. The resort is maintaining its Northshore trails on Beauregard, a zone with wooden frameworks accessible for all levels, with tight bends, jumps, suspended paths and bridges for a maximum of adrenalin. Beginner lessons are available from local professionals as despite being accessible for all, it is a good idea to get some technical advice before you start!

chef of the « La Scierie» restaurant Claudia Descollaz has been the head chef of the « La Scierie » restaurant for the last 3 years. Originally from Madagascar, she started out at the Clos des Sens in Annecy-le Vieux with the 2* Michelin chef Laurent Petit then went on to work with Yohann Conte at the Fitz-Roy in ValThorens and at the Grand Hôtel in Chamonix. She has also worked with the celebrity chef Thierry Marx in Pauillac.

I know the region and its local produce very well having studied in Thonon-Les-Bains. I was keen to come and work in La Clusaz as it has such beautiful surroundings and I immediately fell for the charm of La Scierie restaurant. Using such quality local produce in my kitchen was obvious and I work a lot with Reblochon, the different Tommes, Abondance and many other cheeses, I also love working with local fish such as char from Lake Geneva and lake trout. How would you describe your summer cuisine? I love bringing a Madagascan note to my cuisine, mixing flavours to suggest sweet and sour and adding exciting spices. I also tend more towards fish than meat, especially in summer. Last summer for example I developed a colourful, fresh summer recipe with a glazed roasted sea bass in spices with shredded fennel. One of my desserts was a big hit last summer; it was a simple yet tasty mille-feuille with nougat, pistachio mascarpone cream and raspberries. (ndlr: her cuisine perfectly summed up: simple and tasty!).
News from the kitchens After starting out in the Chabichou restaurant in Courcheval as chef de partie, Thomas Eudier continued his progression as first chef de partie at the Incognito in Caen and then at the Royal Barrier in Deauville. He joined the gastronomic “Le Cinq” restaurant in November 2011 as sous-chef and since September 2012 has been appointed Head chef. Decorated by Gault & Millau in 2011, last winter Florent Roy joined the team of “La Grange de la Serraz” restaurant, part of the Chalets de la Serraz complex as Head Chef.

Heritage A bit of history‌ La Clusaz is proud of its history and its traditions. Founded in the Middle Ages, it has developed through the centuries into the thriving ski resort it is today. At the bend in the road near the TV aerial, leave the road and take the “Chemin de la Patton“ path. Pass near the Fériaz lake then cross the Corbassières pasture to arrive at the Point of Beauregard. Tardevant Lake (4h30) Departure : Arpettaz car park(image, summit departure 1432m arrival 2110m, 700m difference in altitude) From the car park, follow the gravel path that passes over the Grand Crêt combe and leads to the Paccaly chalets past the Bottière chalets. From the Paccaly chalets continue down this path then follow a forest path until you reach the Bombardellaz refuge. Then take the path on your right that takes you up to the combe and to the Tardevant chalet. The path then climbs up through the combe to the Tardevant lake. Come back down via the Tardevant chalet then follow the path to the Paccaly Dessus chalet. From here rejoin the path you came up on.

In the region of Thônes in the Haute Savoie at the heart of the Aravis massif during the 13th century, landowners would tax alpine farmers according to the amount of milk their herds produced. The farmers would therefore not fully milk the cows until after the landowner had measured the yield. As soon as the landowners had left, the farmers would ‘reblocher’ that is to say, finish milking the cows, the milk that remains is much richer, producing the creaminess of the cheese, Reblochon. The farmers in La Clusaz are dedicated to the quality of their production and continue in the tradition of farm produced cheeses, with a twice daily milk yield, with no let-up 365 days a year! For nearly 50 years locals and holiday makers have been coming every August to enjoy the festival that celebrates local craftsmanship, the history of local farming and of course the famous Reblochon cheese. All things local are celebrated with folk dancing, cheese making, cow and goat milking, traditional bread making and a parade through the village. Tasting sessions of delicious mouth-watering local produce are organized throughout the day. A “must” for the summer events calendar, with 10 000 visitors in attendance last year!
RECipe Reblochon anti pasti Makes 30 (prepare the day before and keeps up to 10 days in the fridge) Préparation: 10 min Ingrédients: • 1 Reblochon • 15 extra thin slices of viande des Grisons or Bresaola • Fresh herbs: marjoram, thyme or savory • Olive oil • A handful of mixed olives • Fresh ground pepper
Method: Cut the reblochon with its rind still on into strips about 6cm long and the width of a little finger. Cut the meat slices into 2. Roll each Reblochon strip in a slice of cold meat. Place the strips into a dish, pour over the olive oil, scatter with the herbs and add the pepper. Leave to marinate at least overnight. Serve for aperitif with olives. Tip: It is easier to cut the cheese into strips if you remove it from the fridge at the last minute.
