The Roc des Alpes – La Clusaz 2014 confirmed its place as a major up and coming mountain biking event with 4113 participants and 17 programmed events

The second edition of Le Roc des Alpes – La Clusaz lived up to everyone’s expectations and more as witnessed by the huge smiles on the faces of competitors as they crossed the finish line. The delight of participants made the work and dedication put in by the organisers and the resort in developing the tracks through the Aravis range worthwhile.

The Roc des Alpes – La Clusaz remains an event essentially for amateurs, but also attracts big-name champions such as 2 world number ones, Nicolas Lau and Tracy Moseley who took part in the EnduRoc. The Roc des Alpes, was also delighted to see Kilian Bron (winner of the Roc Down, downhill event), Rémy Absalon (winner of Roc Ruelles with Simon Rogier), Cédric and Cécile Ravanel on the l’EnduRoc, the Swiss Oliver Zurbrügg winner of Roc Marathon (and second in the Roc des Alpes) and Alexis Chenevier and Fanny Bourdon taking part.

“Our first impression is positive, we have taken on board the comments from the first years’ participants and made the necessary adjustments. This, added to our increasing experience and the work carried out by the resort on the slopes only bodes well for the future. When we started this adventure, we gave ourselves 5 years to reach 8000 to 10,000 participants which is a huge challenge. We are forever learning and with time and experience we are confident we will achieve our goals. Time will tell, we are only just beginning, but we are headed in the right direction.”

Managing Director of the La Clusaz Tourist Office. « We have made a lot of improvements, we have upgraded the circuits to really represent the spirit of the different disciplines. Lots of spectators came to enjoy the motocross freestyle show on the Saturday evening, the aim was to create a real buzz in the village and we definitely did that. Of course the presence of big champions such as Nicolas Lau, Tracy Mosel and Kilian Bron etc was rewarding in itself. On a sporting level the La Clusaz resort has doubled its capacity with new downhill tracks and huge work carried out on the enduro tracks. The tracks are now fully functional for a maximum of enjoyment and will of course remain open after the Roc des Alpes.” All this encourages La Clusaz in its determination in concentrating on mountain biking on a mid to longterm basis.

On a sporting level, there are 4 big changes for the 2015 edition

An additional Enduro race. The creation of an E-Race, a challenging and technical event for skilled sportsmen and women which will reach deep into areas in the range that are inaccessible on a classic mountain bike. The Rando Roc Gourmande will have a new departure time slot, just in time for the ‘aperitif’! The Roc Test Camp will be open to allow mountain bikers the chance to try out bikes and equipment on offer from the various exhibitors and partners present at the exhibition.

Clusaz Mag - What is special about the Mountain Biking range in La Clusaz ? Kilian Bron - The best thing for me is the size of the domain. Apart from the permanent tracks in the resort, you can easily take off for some All-Mountain biking right in the heart of the Aravis. There is a wide range of possibilities on offer, from the multitude of circuits within La Clusaz or further out for the more motivated. The scenery is just spectacular and with several types of terrains in the woods and out in the open, the choice is endless! CM - What are your favourite tracks ?

KB - As an Enduro athlete, I love the Encarnes and Bois du Vorêt tracks used for the 2 and 4 specials during the Enduroc du Roc des Alpes-La Clusaz 2014 race. The tracks are accessible from the Crêt du Merle and Crêt du Loup and go round trees on the slope on perfectly loose soil. For a bit more speed and a totally different kind of track, I like the permanent track down Beauregard. It has lovely straight runs and jumps mixed with raised turns! CM - What do you think about the Enduro tracks in the resort ? KB - They are really good fun and nice to ride. The movements of the terrain have been exploited beautifully

and it’s great for any rider to learn to maintain their speed and rhythm on slopes like this. Advanced riders will love the lower part of the Encarnes slope which clings to the mountain with successive turns. CM - Would you recommend La Clusaz ? KB - For mountain biking, La Clusaz is a comprehensive and accessible domain for everyone and for every discipline. There is something for everyone from cross country to downhill and it will appeal to all abilities and age groups. It is rare to find a resort with such a diverse range of facilities to come to with friends or family and that is why I would recommend La Clusaz.

The Aravis mountain range is well known for its many climbing sites and one of the most well-known is the « Rocher des Aravis » located on the road to the Col des Aravis. This site was originally equipped by the instructors from the very first climbing school here and now with its 130 routes for all levels it is a must for climbers, from beginners to the most experienced. The rock face is very varied with some extremely technical sections and a maximum height of 80m. Les Combes des Aravis also has a wide range of multi pitches.

La Clusaz has an enviable location at between 1100m and 2600m and is just a few kilometres as the crow flies from the capital of mountaineering itself, the Mont Blanc range. Mountain enthusiasts cannot fail to wonder at the potential for adventure here.

Via-Ferrata is one of the best ways to try rock climbing in total security.

Trail running has become THE new discipline for mountain sports enthusiasts over the last few years and yet in La Clusaz we are celebrating 30 years of the famous Le Belier race this summer! To celebrate, the Club des Sports in La Clusaz are pushing the boat out and have created 3 new special events:

Follow the secure “lifeline” along the cliff face, and take in the the sun shining over La Clusaz. The “Yves Pollet Villard” via ferrata (named in honour of the late well-known guide and former Mayor) stretches over 700m along the spectacular cliffs of the Borderan mountain. Complete with harness and attached to your “life line” you will follow the curve of the rocks at between 1 500m and 1 800m altitude, over a suspended rope bridge with a 80m drop and up and over a magnificent overhang. ALAIN MICHEL’S CHEESES NOW UP THE MOUNTAIN

Alain Michel and his team will be delighted to welcome you to his recently renovated shop in the heart of the village of La Clusaz to taste the delicious local farmhouse cheeses: reblochon fermier, Abondance and other local products. Drop in and try one of the local master cheese refiner’s specialities such as the ready to cook Fondue Michel and a range of cheeses with truffles, e.g. Brie de Meaux, Coulomiers and St Marcellin.

REBLOCHON FERMIER REIGNS OVER THE MOUNTAINS!

Born and breed in the Aravis, here’s the story of Reblochon Fermier. During the 13th century, landowners would tax alpine farmers according to the amount of milk their herds produced. The farmers would therefore not fully milk the cows until after the landowner had measured the yield. As soon as the landowners had left, the farmers ‘reblochait’ meaning, finished milking the cows, the milk that remained was much richer, producing the creaminess of the cheese, Reblochon. Continuing in the same tradition, Reblochon fermier is hand made from unpasteurised milk twice a day after each milking. The milk comes from one herd of cows only and mostly from the Abondance breed of cow. The vast majority of Reblochon fermier comes from the Aravis. Reblochon fermier benefits from the l’Appellation d’Origine Protégée which limits the production areas and maintains traditional farming methods, manufacture and maturing. Only 48 cheeses carry this certification in France and have a responsibility to continue the tradition of cheese making in France. In 2008, Reblochon celebrated 50 years of its “registered designation of origin” certification.

After a walk in the pastures, a final run down the summer luge or a dip in the pool, what better than to sit back and savour a chilled drink or a colourful cocktail as you watch the sun go down. Roc des Alpes-La Clusaz is back for a third edition with no less than 17 events to officially open the summer season in La Clusaz. Le Roc ds Alpes in La Clusaz is all about mountain biking for all, with the Marathon World Cup to the Kid Roc for children. Live shows and fun events come together to make this a fantastic weekend for mountain bike enthusiasts and their families!

The magicians invade La Clusaz: street shows, workshops, close - up in restaurants... The magic settles down everywhere in the mountain!

2 days of games, entertainment and shows for kids organised around the village school, followed by a lively traditional ball that goes long in to the night.

FIREMAN’S BALL 13TH JULY

THE LOCAL REBLOCHON AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL 9TH AUGUST

Bastille day wouldn’t be complete without the Fireman’s Ball. Every 13th of July, locals and holidaymakers come together for the annual village dance, for an evening of traditional, good old-fashioned fun!

A festival celebrating local craftsmanship, the history of local farming and of course the famous cheese, Reblochon. Come and witness the making of the cheese in the afternoon and have the first taste of freshly produced Reblochon. All things local are celebrated with folk dancing, traditional bread making and a grand parade through the village.
