La Clusaz is an ideal destination for all, with a large variety of slopes, enough to please beginners and experts alike. With a top altitude of 2600m over the 5 interlinked massifs of Beauregard, Manigod, l’Etale, l’Aiguille and Balme, and descents of over 1000m, the resort has earned its place at the top for all disciplines of snow sports. The 84 slopes with a total of 132km of runs are linked by highly efficient ski lifts. For more enjoyment, a shuttle bus service also links La Clusaz to Le Grand Bornand resort and with a Massif des Aravis ski pass, you can access 220kms of slopes.

lifts! In 2012, the SATELC (company that manages the ski domaine) massively invested in the biggest renovation work ever seen in the history of La Clusaz. They started the first phase on the Crêt du Loup sector and revealed a brand new 6 seater chair lift there last winter. The SATELC has never undertaken a project of this size before, with a budget of around 20 million euros over 3 years. The work done will transform the resort with an increased uplift capacity and so more skiing! The next phase will be completed in 2014 with a 6-seater combined chairlift and cable car from the Bossonnet to the Crêt du Merle.

La Clusaz is well-known for its spectacular off-piste skiing and its fantastic gullies and bowls. Over the years, it has become a mecca for off-piste skiing with its untamed and extraordinary mountains. Not surprising then that it is the hotbed for Freeriding champions of all ages:
All are unanimous and attest quality of the skiable field which enabled them to be formed then to be maintained with best level! La Clusaz has been also the land of welcome of a qualificative stage of the Freeride World Tour for 3 years, “La Clusaz Radikal Mountain FWQ4*” which takes place in January.
Seb Michaud, after 16 years’ experience on the international circuit, he took his well-earned retirement after the final stage of the Freeride World Tour 2013, l’Xtrem in Verbier. Mathieu Bijasson entered the FWT in 2012 (interview below), Loïc Collomb-Patton will take part in season 2013/2014, Mickaël Bijasson is in the top 6 of the Freeride World Qualifiers, Illona Carlod at only 15 years old she’s the rookie of the group, but she participated in the Junior World Tour last year when she was only 14 years old!

Freeriding courses for children Several centres offer off-piste beginner lessons for children and teenagers. Qualified instructors will seek the best conditions at each specific time to allow young freeriders to progress in security. Lessons include searches using ARVA, mountain security, position and ski techniques, reading the terrain, the snow conditions and identifying risks, etc. Key words are “good safe fun”! Clusaz Mag’ : What do you think of the Freeriding area in La Clusaz? Mathieu Bijasson : La Clusaz has an impressive Freeriding area with some great runs and lots of mountaineering routes to explore. There are also zones for all levels from the amateur freerider to the most experienced, not forgetting the Balme, which is just one giant fun park with unique land movements you just don’t see anywhere else. The advantage of a middle altitude resort is that you can always find good snow to have some serious fun and if the conditions are not great, you can always ski in the forest, which is a great alternative.
CM : What do you love about Freeriding ? M.B : I love being alone on the mountain, far from competitors and cameras, with the slopes below just for me. It’s the ultimate feeling of liberty. Freeriding is all about new sensations as you discover new lines and ‘blind’ jumps. CM : How did you get onto the Freeride World Tour this year? M.B : I was lucky enough to be given a Wild Card by La Clusaz in January 2012, which gives privileged access for participation in the La Clusaz Radikal Mountain 4 star stage of the Freeride World Qualifiers. I finished second which gave me access to all the other Freeride competitions of the season. I took part in 7 races last year
and finished second in two 4 star FWQ races. My success in the overall ranking for the FWQs opened the doors to the Freeride World Tour this year. CM : Describe your perfect Freeriding day. M.B : That would be waking up to a clear blue sky and fresh snow, and meeting up with my mates, Lolo (Favre), Loïc (Collomb-Patton), Vivien (Thierry), Laurent (Thevenet), Aurélien (Fornier), JL (Ratchel) and Aziz (Ben Lich), for the first lift at the bottom of Balme. We have known each other since we were kids and grew up together on Balme and still see each other a lot. Our love for skiing and especially our close friendship makes us want to keep progressing and going forward together.

MANIGOD SKI AREAS La Clusaz and Manigod are located on the northwest flank of the Aravis massif. This favourable position gives them a combined average snowfall of more than 6 metres at an altitude of 1,860 metres.

The La Clusaz and Manigod ski areas are connected to the Grand-Bornand ski area in the Aravis massif via special ski passes.

an exceptional location ! The plateau of the Confins is one of the most popular Nordic ski locations in the Haute Savoie, and has been the official host to heats during the World Cups from 1987 to 2013 and the training ground for Vincent Vittoz. As well as having a magnificent skiable area, it has also managed to maintain an authentic atmosphere whilst respecting the remarkable natural environment. Located at the foot of the magnificent Aravis coombs, overlooking the Confins Lake, it is renowned for
its beauty, ease of access and accessibility for all levels and ages. The area offers 50km of slopes with artificial snow installations in a picturesque setting, with a 7km link with Le Grand Bornand. The area has been awarded the ÂŤ 4 Nordiques Âť by Nordique France for the last 10 years which recognizes the quality of the area according to various criteria; the size and diversity, maintenance of the slopes, equipment and services etc.

Plateau
amazing views Cross country ski lovers will be amazed by the views from the Nordic area on the Beauregard Plateau. Overlooking the resort, the Aravis mountain range and the Mont Blanc they really are a sight to
behold. The plateau is spread out over 8 well maintained slopes over 36km and one of the big advantages of this area is its accessibility from the Beauregard cable car direct from the village!

New the Nordic Ski Park : Perfect for the littlies ! This children’s fun park, set up last winter, has been a great success and will be restructured for this winter 2013/2014. Having developed the Nordic Cross and the “Piou-Piou” area (for tinies), La Clusaz decided to create an intermediary area for children to discover cross country skiing in a fun way.

And it works! Children are free to try out the jumps, long slopes, fun slaloms, tunnels, bumps, raised turns, ski balls and ski hockey to their heart’s content. The park is open all season and is free for the under 6s and included in the ski pass for older children.

ICE Breaker ! New at the ice rink ! The ice rink has a brand-new roof, finished last summer 2013, so it can now be open whatever the weather! Located at the foot of the slopes, the ice rink offers 1000m² of fun with plenty of different formulas available. Why not take an introductory course in ice hockey, or some ice skating lessons. There are also fun sessions organised with disco evenings. There is a magical children’s snow garden, ideal for children who will love learning to skate with their parents during the kids sessions complete with bridges, obstacles and slaloms.

Ski joëring Imported from Scandinavia, the ancestral sport ski-joering combines skiing with horse riding. Formerly used as a method of transport, it has now become a recognized snow sport. You can choose whether to take a gentle ski being pulled along in the snow by a trotting horse for starters or, to set off on an excursion of several kilometres being pulled by a galloping horse. A paret is a traditional sledge, with a single metal runner that you sit on to fly down the snow covered slopes. It was traditionally used at the beginning of the 20th century by children to get to their village school and has since become a local institution. A unique festival in the heart of the mountains !
On the 29th, 30th and 31st April, RadioMeuh. com in association with the La Clusaz tourist office organised their first ever festival with live concerts and DJs, a logical extension of their eclectic and top quality music programming. Amazing musicians such as ; Alice Russell, Jukebox Champions and Bibi Tanga & The Selenites were present under the circus tent to the delight of the festival goers, for what was a fantastic music-filled Easter weekend.
