LES ROUTES DU VIN DE BORDEAUX

In the wake of the Bordeaux Wine Routes Wine is everywhere in Bordeaux. Even in the heart of the city the vine has slipped itself in, harvested on the façades of some buildings in the Place de la Victoire. Kept going by a passion dating back thousands of years, it marks out a familiar landscape of hills and geometric plains, linking in tight rows the white-stone villages, the aristocratic châteaux and the monuments on the quays. At the doors of the city, the vineyard invites all sorts of experiences and discoveries. On this renowned land, each sense is called upon. To stride through it is to smell the freshness of the mists in Sauternes, and feel the caress of the setting sun on the Gironde estuary. It is to experience the noise of the tractors in the early morning, and that of a bottle being uncorked in the shadows of the cellars for an impromptu tasting. In this magical place, the real heart of the property, the barrels give off their unique aroma, fresh and heady at the same time, full of promise. Here the taste of the wine develops, its richness, its balance, thanks to time, thanks to the oak, and thanks to the people and their know-how. 750 nationally-recognised establishments make up the 6 “Routes du vin de Bordeaux”. The label certifies that the estate: provides a warm welcome; offers high quality service; helps visitors explore their vineyards and the universe of wine; places value on local natural, cultural and human heritage; is environmentally conscious. Open-air cafés and restaurants on Bordeaux’s right bank Bordeaux natives make the best of the beautiful summer evenings all along the Angéliques Park between the Chaban-Delmas and the the Stone bridges. Restaurants built on stilts or simple open-air cafés offer them a complete change of scenery. The oldest among them, Chez Alriq (www.laguinguettechezalriq.com) is a key venue of the alternative culture of the city: you can go there for drinks, to share a snack, listen to a concert or for a spot of outdoor dancing! A “docks” atmosphere and a fish menu at Les Marins de la Lune, next door to an organic beer brasserie (opening summer 2016). More traditional but just as bucolic, the riverside terrace at La Petite

Gironde (www.lapetitegironde.fr) offers an uninterrupted view of the facades of the buildings on the opposite banks. Plus two more urban addresses: the very chic Estacade, has good food and one of the most stunning views of the Place de la Bourse (www.estacade-restaurant. com) and the Café du Port located in a former boat shed converted into a restaurant, an ideal spot to admire the sunset over the Saint-Michel spire and the quaysides. It is also a cosy place to spend pleasant winter evenings (www.lecafeduport.com)

Laurence Chesneau-Dupin La Cité du Vin Thirteen years after designing then running the Musée des arts du cognac, Laurence Chesneau-Dupin, a heritage conservationist, now manages the cultural side of the Cité du Vin. She is very enthusiastic in her assessment of the cultural centre’s first year, which has been crowned by the launch of a large exhibition, ‘Bistrot! De Baudelaire à Picasso’ (“Bistro! From Baudelaire to Picasso”); she directed the curation of the exhibition.

What is your assessment of the Cité du Vin after one year since its opening? LC: The Cité du Vin has well and truly took off in terms of visitors. In 2016 alone- so that’s during its first seven months- there were almost 270,000 visitors, and that’s just in the parts which are open to paying visitors. Then you have to add on the free-to-access areas (the shop, the reading room, the gardens, etc.) and the restaurants. We are especially pleased that the public has taken not only to the Cité’s permanent attractions, but to the workshops, conferences, debates and shows that we offer as well.

Among the various attractions that are on offer at the Cité, how should visitors organise their time? LC: Everybody has their interests, and the Cité is designed with this in mind. Exploring the building, visiting its main attraction and its belvedere can easily be done in half a day. Nevertheless, the fact that there are 10 hours of content explains why the annual subscription can be useful; it allows you to come and go as you please, while giving you privileged access to our cultural events. If you have a whole day to fill then there is always the option of a workshop and taking a moment to relax in the restaurants or the wine bar, and that’s just an example. How do you find ways of renewing the cultural aspect of the Cité? LC: Temporary exhibitions are one of the pillars of the cultural policy of the Cité du Vin, they are what allow us to regularly renew our cultural offering. Until 21st June 2017, the exhibition ‘Bistrot! De Baudelaire à Picasso’ has approximately one hundred works on show that mix paintings, photography, drawings, cinema and literature. Every one of them evokes the place of bistros and cafés in our way of life and artistic creation since the end of the 18th century. Theses places were frequented and represented by the greatest artists, painters, writers, filmmakers. They were places of modernity, ones where the ideas of friendship, love and freedom blossomed.

What to do on the Estuary?

The estuary around Médoc hosts a dozen incredibly charming little harbours: La Maréchale, Saint-Christoly-de-Médoc, Port of By, Goulée, Valeyrac and Richard (visit its lighthouse), and others. It is an opportunity to glimpse the famous carrelets, these large, square fishing nets that gave their name to a fishing technique typically used in the estuary and to the huts - on stilts – intended for this activity. This haphazard fishing technique is essentially used by hobby anglers (the nets are raised regularly and no bait is used). BORDEAUX WINE TRIP 2017

Nathalie Schÿler Château Kirwan, Margaux In the heart of a region that is steeped in tradition, Château Kirwan uses modern tools to pass on ancestral knowledge. Nowadays, Nathalie Schÿler runs this family-owned estate with her brother and sister and has managed to transform this Grand Cru Classé into a central figure in Bordeaux’s wine tourism.

To what extent do wines from Margaux- and those from the Médoc as a whole- occupy a special place in the Bordeaux wine canon? NS: Due to its location, between the Gironde Estuary and the Atlantic Ocean, the Médoc is a peninsula that benefits from a benevolent microclimate that is conducive to growing vines. The geological formation of the earth around here makes for a sandy soil that makes these wines exceptional. The Médoc is also distinguished by its history; wine has been developed here since the 12th century and is

constantly being perfected, always looking for the perfect blend. The allure of this appellation comes both from its wine and from its cultural heritage; the castles are particularly imposing, and are large enough to have sheltered whole villages in their time. Is the Médoc the natural place to run a family estate? NS: We are incredibly lucky to run a family business here, not only due to the incredible heritage of this area, but also due to its human aspect. The spirit of our work consists

in developing what has been done before us and passing it on. We use new technologies to attract a large and varied clientele and then to open their minds to the world of wine. Nearly 20 years since its opening, the number of visitors to our estate has gone from 500 to 7000 every year. What does the estate offer to the many visitors who come out to meet you? NS: With a view to extending the CitĂŠ du Vin experience, we offer

visitors the chance to discover an estate that is out of the ordinary. Thanks to digital tablets and other screens, the visitor is plunged into the history of the property in a fun and interactive way. The guided tour of the cellars can be followed by a wine tasting and there is even the chance to dine here. We also offer small groups the opportunity to enjoy the “visit of their dreams, which ends in a tasting of a vintage of their choice in a wine vault in our underground cellars.

La Safranière de Garonne Just as every civilisation since ancient times has found a use for wine, so it is with saffron. As early as the Middle Ages, saffron was used in Entre-deux-Mers for its medicinal and culinary virtues; the monks also used it to make their illuminations. After six centuries of use in traditional culture, saffron disappeared in the early 20th century. P O RT RAI T

Thierry Lurton Château de Camarsac, Entre-deux-Mers

What reasons are there to come to Entre-Deux-Mers? TL: Montesquieu described Entre-Deux-Mers as “the French Tuscany”, Montaigne compared it to the Pô Valley, between Venice and Milan. These are not merely anodyne recommendations: just like Tuscany, Entre-Deux-Mers is a land of mixed farming, it’s particularly hilly and endowed with an immense medieval heritage. The range of flora and landscapes in the area are only equalled by the exceptional diversity of wines that come from here. Its proximity to the centre of Bordeaux, less than 30 minutes away, makes Entre-Deux-Mers an unmissable stop-off point for visitors to the region.

© Nicolas Rinaldi

From the Camarsac promontory, the Château known as “the Black Prince” dominates the diverse nature of the Entre-Deux-Mers region. Thierry Lurton and his wife Solange made this place home at the beginning of the noughties, and since then they have developed innovative initiatives to preserve its outstanding natural beauty. What sort of tours and other activities do you offer? TL: Our credo is to make our wine, our architectural heritage and the surrounding nature accessible to everyone. That means that visitors can come and take a turn in the woods around the château in absolute autonomy. We have put up signs all along the trails to let visitors discover the diversity of the landscapes, the specificities of growing wine and the history of the premises, all at their own pace. For us, the wine tasting sessions are an opportunity to create discussion and convey our passion. During our blending workshops, we help visitors make the kind of wine that they want, which they then take home with them.

What motivates your desire to pass on your knowledge and passion? TL: The philosophy that has guided us ever since we came here 10 years ago is that we want to make the diversity of this area its main attraction. The differing landscapes and soils in Entre-Deux-Mers have long been seen as a handicap, but nowadays we see it as its biggest asset. It is with this in mind that we are preparing, in conjunction with our partners, to open a new park that is highlights to the natural beauty of this place. The idea is to preserve the area and make it more and more accessible in an enjoyable way.

Camille Le Chapelier Grand Saint-Emilionnais Tourist Information Centre

Is the chance to discover the wine from SaintEmilion and its neighbouring villages only reserved for connoisseurs? CC: Beginners and connoisseurs are all catered for here at the “Saint-Emilionnais”, thanks to the numerous estates that love sharing their knowledge and savoir-faire with them. In fact, many offer the opportunity to find out about the process of winemaking, from the vine to the blend. On top of that you can visit their wine cellars; everything is laid bare to the visitor! Wine lovers will appreciate the chance to engage directly with the estate owners in the numerous family-owned chateaux, others may prefer to admire the underground cellars and other architectural vestiges that have been left from yesteryear.

In Saint-Emilion, the winemaking and historical heritage the surrounding area are open to visitors. Since arriving in the south-west from his native Brittany 5 years ago, Camille Le Chapelier has put his fresh outlook into creating authentic tours.

How might you reconcile a wine tour with the discovery of the local heritage? CC: Patrimonial monuments can be found everywhere, especially in the heart of the medieval citadel of Saint-Emilion. There is nothing more pleasant than taking the time to meander along the paved streets while making your way to the 11th century monolithic church that is entirely carved into the rock. It is the largest underground religious building in Europe. The outlying villages also possess patrimonial treasures such as Saint-Georges’ and Saint Martin’s churches in Montagne or the windmills of Calon. Some wine estates- like Château Monbadon in Puisseguin- allow visitors to take a tour of their architectural attractions.

Are there any activities that take you off the beaten trail? CC: You have a variety of options for when you visit Saint-Emilion: horse-drawn carriage, tuk-tuk or even segway, the electronic vehicle on two wheels that is steered by using your body weight. Beyond the wine and local heritage, Saint-Emilion is also known for its gastronomical excellence. The macaroon is a local speciality, and there are various different options for eating out. From an intimate wine bar to Michelin-starred restaurants: all budgets are catered for. There is also a wealth of walking and cycling trails throughout the area.

Olivier Pedarros La Compagnie des 2 Rives (“The 2 Banks Company”)

Born in Bordeaux, Olivier Pedarros learned to sail along the Gironde estuary. As the owner of the boat Les 2 Rives for 15 years now, he strives to share the treasures of “his estuary’s” heritage under a friendly atmosphere.

What pleasures await on the Gironde Estuary and around Blaye? OP: As a UNESCO World Heritage listed site, the “Verrou Vauban” (the Citadel of Blaye, Fort Médoc and Fort Pâté) is incontestably the jewel of the Gironde Estuary. Other historical sites like the gallo-roman villas of Plassac also attract many visitors. In the last few years, the small wine growing properties- whose wines are shaped by the estuary’s microclimate- have especially benefited from the development of wine tourism. The shift in the economic and and touristic dynamic that Bordeaux is undergoing is really very profitable for the region as a whole; we are seeing the difference all along the Garonne, right up to the estuary and its archipelago. In what way do you help visitors discover the estuary’s archipelago? OP: Departing from Blaye, as well as from Cussac-Fort-Médoc and Pauillac, we take them around the estuary with our partners, Bordeaux River Cruise. They can stop off at l’île Nouvelle or at the refuge of Patiras, where visitors can take a

walk, a wine tasting or dine according to the order of the day. In addtion, there is the Route de la Corniche which links Blaye and Bourg-sur-Gironde. We are also developing citadel-to-citadel excursions which take passengers to Fort Médoc while sailing past Fort Paté. Beyond the nature of your excursions, what sets you apart from the other river cruises? OP: We make a special effort to ensure that each of our trips are convivial and interesting. That is what fundamentally sets us apart from the others who mainly offer to sail passengers from one destination to another with an offer of hospitality. We really listen to our customers who know that they can enjoy a personalised cruise onboard the 2 Rives. Seminars, cocktails, Gascon snacks, wine tastings conducted by the winegrower, etc: passengers (including businesses and associations) have so many options. Sometimes the fun goes on late into the night.

Why should visitors head out to the Graves and Sauternes region? CC: Our area- which covers Graves, Sauternes and part of the Landes- is vast but easily accessible, especially from Bordeaux. it is not by mere chance that the Cité du Vin sends a lot of people our way. Visitors come here for the famous Sauternes wine and the architectural heritage that can be found in this appellation. Many also come to experience the diverse range of wines that come from Graves and Pessac-Léognan, where every colour of wine is produced.

Having studied in Bordeaux, where he lived for 10 years, worked in the Agen mayor’s office then in the south-east of France, Dominque Argans is now three years into his role as the head of the South-Gironde Tourist Information Centre. His unconventional path to his position is in tune with the unconventional wine and natural diversity of this area that extends from the South of Bordeaux to the borders of the Landes forest. What benefits can we draw from this diversity? CC: Even though we boast the largest density of Grands Crus Classés, we also have a large selection of activities for all tastes and for all budgets. This diversity is reflected in the châteaux visits. Some consist of meeting the winegrower face-to-face and sharing their passion, others allow you to go deep into the heart of prestigious wine estates. Regardless of the manner in which the visitor may want to discover the vineyards, dozens of châteaux are open throughout the year. Also, the châteaux in each of this area’s appellations organise open days at the end of every year.

What other attractions does the region have? CC: In addition to the vineyards, the historical heritage of the area is striking, with châteaux that date from the 14th century (Roquetaillade, Villandraut, Fargues, Hamel et Budos), built under the auspices of the former archbishop of Bordeaux, Pope Clement V. This rich cultural heritage is accompanied by various natural walks or bike rides, notably along the lakes of Hostens, in the heart of the Girondin Landes. Everywhere in this large area, you can taste famous Gascon produce: charcuterie, local pastis, cheeses, exceptional foie gras and much more...
