UNESCO HERITAGE TOUR It is 10 years since an urban perimeter of 1810 hectares in central Bordeaux has enjoyed recognition by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. This area takes in almost all of the city centre as the “Port de la Lune” (Port of the Moon). The Tourist Office offers routes around the city to help you discover the ambience and the main monuments of Bordeaux at your own pace.

1 MONUMENT AUX GIRONDINS A tribute to the inhabitants of Gironde lost during the French Revolution, ‘Liberty Breaking its Chains’ stands proud at the top of the 43m column (1895-1901).

MAISON GOBINEAU Bordeaux’s own version of the ‘Flatiron Building’ which houses the CIVB headquarters (Bordeaux Wine MultiDisciplinary Council) as well as their wine bar, which is a local institution (1788). 2

GRAND-THÉÂTRE A master-piece of European architecture, of which the stair well served as inspiration for the architect responsible for the Opera Garnier in Paris. Fronted by a columned portico with twelve stone statues (nine muses accompanied by Minerva, Venus, Juno), it is one of the most spectacular 18th century theatres in the world today. 3

4 ÉGLISE NOTRE-DAME Constructed by the Jacobins, the church is typical of baroque edifices of the Counter-Reformation. Its parvis has been the set of numerous period-drama films.

5 COUR MABLY The cloister of a former Dominican convent, today it is the Regional Chamber of Accounts and a concert and exhibition venue.

6 PORTE DIJEAUX An imposing city entrance which opens onto one of Bordeaux’s most beautiful tree-planted squares.

9 MUSÉE D’AQUITAINE A museum retracing the history of Aquitaine and Bordeaux, from prehistory to the present. 10 GROSSE CLOCHE A historic town belfry and the only remains of the old defensive gate of the 13th century. Cast in 1775 by the Turmel foundry, the bell weighs 7,800 kg. 11 PLACE FERNAND-LAFARGUE The former ‘old market place’ (1155), where the pillory was once installed. Today along with Rue Saint James constitutes one of the hippest places in Bordeaux. 12 PORTE CAILHAU A former defensive gate (1493-1496) dedicated to King Charles VIII of France, victor of the Battle of Fornovo (Italy). The Porte Cailhau makes for an interesting visit with panoramic views. 13 ÉGLISE SAINT-PIERRE Built between the 14th and 15th centuries on the site of an old Gallo-Roman port. 14 PLACE DU PARLEMENT The most Italian of the squares in the city, created in 1754 by decree of Bailiff Tourny. In the centre stands a fountain by Louis Garros (1865). 15

PALAIS ROHAN After the French Revolution in 1800 it became the Gironde prefecture, then an imperial palace and royal residence, until finally becoming the city hall in 1837. 7

8 CATHÉDRALE SAINT-ANDRÉ & TOUR PEY-BERLAND This Gothic-style cathedral hosted two royal marriages. The first between Eleanor of Aquitaine and the future Louis VII and the second between Anne of Austria and Louis XIII. The Pey Berland Tower, a bell tower built in the 15th century separately from the cathedral offers a unique view of the city.

PLACE DE LA BOURSE This product of the Age of Enlightenment is the city square the most comparable to Versailles. Built by Jacques Gabriel from 1729 to 1733, the Royal Square, along with the ‘Stock Market Building’ became the place where trade prices were set in the 18th century. In the centre, The Fountain of the Three Graces. 16 MIROIR D’EAU A key feature of the Garonne waterfront redevelopment project. The water mirror has become the emblem and the favorite place for strolling with children.

Like the Versailles and Turin opera houses, the GrandThéâtre has one of the World’s most beautiful 18th century auditoriums! Garnier, the architect of the Paris Opera House, drew inspiration on visiting the ‘Palais de Louis’. Victor Louis 14

COURS DU CHAPEAU ROUGE

The old ditches of the cours du Chapeau-Rouge are now lined with opulent mansions built in line with the facade of the Grand Théâtre. This urbanisation was realised for the rich traders and parliamentary bourgeoisie by the architect Victor Louis between 1774 and 1778. It is one of the city’s most beautiful promenades. The famous ‘Cannelé’, a divine little caramelised cake, soft inside and flavoured with rum and vanilla, symbolises the elegance of Bordeaux’s pastry-making. The Baillardran and Toque Cuivrée brands each have their own shops on Cours du XXX Juillet and Cours de l’Intendance and then Gambetta Square respectively. 6 4 PLENSA’S SANNA Sanna is one of seven female figures by the artist Jaume Plensa. This series represents a new direction of artistic experimentation and reflection for the Catalonian sculptor.

5 THEATRE LE FRANCAIS A traditional French theatre that became a cinema. Constructed between 1799 - 1800, the Bordelaise architect Jean-Baptiste Dufart played on the triangular form with the entrance matching the shape of the street in front of it. The result is softened by a rounded peristyle prolonged by views of more severe Neo-Classical facades beyond.

6 AUDITORIUM OF THE NATIONAL BORDEAUX OPERA Made spectacular by its structure, acoustics and with the largest orchestra pit in Europe, it was created for the Bordeaux National Opera, which offers a musical programme in multiple repertoires: Marché des Grands Hommes

8 EGLISE NOTRE DAME & MABLY COURTYARD The Notre-Dame church and Cour Mably Courtyard are the only remains of the Dominican Convent which stood in this neighbourhood in the 13th century. Pierre Michel Duplessy was the architect who planned its layout and the facade, inspired by the Church of the Gesù in Rome. Close to the church, the Cour Mably Courtyard and the Chapter House (Salle Capitulaire) are timeless places where concerts, openair screenings and exhibitions are held all year round.

FIFIB > October The International Independent Film Festival (FIFIB) has become an unmissable event for Bordeaux’s cinema-goers. The FIFIB supports multicultural and trans-disciplinary world cinema. Tourny wanted to endow Bordeaux with grand promenades. In 1744, the Defence Minister authorised him to create “An avenue or a new road planted with trees” at the foot of the Château-Trompette. The height of the houses was limited to one storey.

QUINCONCES ESPLANADE

The Bordeaux of the French Revolution with its famous ‘Monument aux Girondins’ ! Opposite the river, two victorious columns stand dedicated to commercial and maritime feats. To either side stand statues of the much-loved Bordelaise philosophers Montaigne and Montesquieu. The ‘Monument aux Girondins’ is composed of gushing bronze fountains with its raised column, on top of which stands the statue of Liberty Breaking its Chains. It is a tribute to the late Men and Women of Gironde who were lost during the Revolution. The square regularly hosts flea-markets, fairs and circuses. Place des Quinconces -

JARDIN DES LUMIERES

Two vast areas called the Garden of Light adorned with lowgrowing plants lie to each side of the Water Mirror, opening up the panoramic view of the Port de la Lune. With around 33,000 plants, it presents a marvellous botanical spectacle all year round. Walking paths and seating areas make it a pleasant place to stroll along the riverside.

A mosaic of neighbourhoods makes up old Bordeaux. Its monuments, its streets and its people make it a distinct entity. History buffs will appreciate the carved facades and can indulge themselves in its cafés, bistros and restaurants.

Established between the 11th and 15th century, this church is now disused and its furniture looted during the revolution. The church was a feed store, a customs house, a stable and a garage before becoming a store house for the Aquitaine museum. This green wall was designed as a true vegetal tapestry by the botanic artist Patrick Blanc. It rests on a metallic structure covered by PVC and is equipped with polyamide felt and root pockets which allow the plants to develop without a natural substrate. Church revised by Jean Jules Mondet (1879-1882). This building stands on the site of the former harbour of the Roman castra. 18 THE PERCHED CAR VICTOR HUGO CAR PARK At the time of the renovation of the car park in 1993, in an attempt to break-up the monotonous facade, which from certain angles looks like the radiator grill of a car, the Bordelais architect Jean-François Dosso created a real work-of-art. He positioned a green Jaguar MK2 protruding from the side of the building appearing to fall to the floor. The car has no motor to make it lighter and to enhance the artistic impact.

In 1662 the Jesuits bought the old city hall to construct a professed house as well as a chapel for their convent. This chapel is today known as the Church of Saint-Paul. The church is constructed in the form of a latin cross and is characteristic of baroque architecture in Bordeaux. Inside there is a magnificent 17th century altarpiece and a contemporary chandelier.

14th-16th centuries. This is the largest parish church in Bordeaux. It is probably of Carolingian origin. In a flamboyant Gothic style it is composed of three naves and four bays intersected by the transept which precedes the three polygonal apses which surround the choir. CHÂTEAU DESCAS

Built by Alphonse Ricard between 1890 and 1893 for the trader Jean Descas. Outside the Great Bordeaux Trade, Descas developed his commerce through his “little wines” which he shipped up the Garonne River. He stored his wine on the Paludate dock and had this exuberantly decorated building constructed for the purpose, with a style that provocatively contrasts with the classic facades on the quays. 2 MUSEUM OF DECORATIVE ARTS AND DESIGN

The area has been inhabited since the Roman era. According to the drawings of Nicolas Portier, Voisin rebuilt the west gateway of the city- also known as Porte Dauphine- between 1748 and 1753. It leads to Place Gambetta, which is to be redesigned from 2018.

Under the antique panelling and chandeliers of the Hôtel de Lalande, designed by Etienne Laclotte, the furnishings and ornaments recreate the atmosphere of an aristocratic townhouse “entre cour et jardin” (between entrance courtyard and garden) under Louis XVI. With its superb staircase, its panelled walls and parquet flooring, its marble fireplaces and traces of original décor, it is a remarkable example of the homes of Bordeaux’s aristocracy at the end of the Ancien Régime period. A museography displays reconstructions in the manner of American “period rooms”. In parallel to the exhibitions dedicated to the decorative arts, it gives a new impetus to design and contemporary creation.

PALAIS ROHAN

The Palais Rohan recalls the splendour and power of the archbishops of Bordeaux in the 18th century. In 1772, the archbishop Mériadec de Rohan commissioned the architect Joseph Etienne to build him a new palace. The work was funded, in part, by the creation of a vast dwelling place (the present Mériadeck district). After the Revolution, it became the District Hall, then the Prefecture of Gironde, and finally the Town Hall in 1837. Inside the building is one of the most beautiful staircases in France, considered a masterpiece of French stonemasonry. Hôtel de ville. 5 CATHEDRALE SAINT-ANDRE In 1096, Pope Urban II consecrated the first cathedral of Bordeaux. In 1305, the Archbishop of Bordeaux, Bertrand de Goth, was elected Pope under the name of Clement V, and a period of construction followed. The design of the Saint-André cathedral was based on the Latin Cross, and constitutes a fine example of southern gothic architecture. The Royal Door, constructed in the 13th century, is decorated with remarkable sculptures. Two famous marriages took place here: the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine and the future king of France Louis VII (1137) as well as the marriage of Louis XIII to Anne of Austria (1615). 6 TOUR PEY-BERLAND The 12th century bell tower was insufficiently able to support its bells and the Great Bell required a home. It was therefore necessary therefore to build a bell tower separate from the cathedral. As a result the Pey-Berland Tower was finished in 1440, and since then the spired-tower has reached high into the skies over Bordeaux. In 1617, a storm badly damaged the pinnacle. It was only in 1853 that a monumental statue of Our Lady of Aquitaine was raised on top. This is undoubtedly the finest panoramic viewing platform in the city, well worth a visit! Inaugurated in 2014, the Cité Municipale was designed by the architect Paul Andreu as a filter between the historic and the modern district of Mériadeck. The lower part is covered with blond stone in the continuity with the 18th century architecture while modern glass is used in the upper part.

In this residential neighbourhood, representative of the interwar period, the Art Deco style developed marvellously, especially in the context of individual housing and the stadium that was built in 1934. It is famous in the architecture world for its arched concrete panels by Dabenni and sculptures by Buthaud. The stadium now hosts the Union Bordeaux-Bègles rugby team, which attracts the biggest crowd of Top 14 and Europe (25,000 on average per game).

BASILICA OF SAINT-SEURIN

Originally built between the 11th and 16th centuries and later restored in the 19th. The Saint-Seurin Basilica is most likely the cradle of Christianity in Bordeaux. As early as the 4th century, converts settled on the site of a large Gallo-Roman necropolis where they built their first chapel. In the 11th century, the canons undertook the construction of a large Romanesque building, of which the porch, the chevet, the crypt and the base of the bell tower still exist. Work continued on the building with the addition of several chapels in the 16th century and a neo-Romanesque frontage by Poitevin and Maggesi in the 19th century. SAINT-SEURIN EARLY CHRISTIAN SITE

The archaeological site of Saint Seurin is probably the cradle of Christianity in Bordeaux, in the Gallo-Roman era. In 1910, archaeological excavations in front of the basilica revealed a vast Christian necropolis with rows of graves in layers in the ground, ranging from the 4th to the 18th century. Charlemagne is said to have buried his brave knights who were killed in the Battle of Roncevaux Pass.

PALAIS GALLIEN

The Palais Gallien is today the only visible remains of the Roman city of Burdigala. Built in the early 2nd century AD, its original dimensions are impressive: 130 meters long and 114 meters wide. The amphitheatre was located on the outskirts of the ancient city. Games - often cruel - were held here before large crowds. 20-25 000 people could be seated on the terraced rows of wooden benches!

Listed “”French Remarkable Gardens”. The countryside comes to the city, where strollers, joggers, children and grandparents meander alongside swans and ducks in harmony. LES CHARTRONS

The Chartrons district evokes the period during which Bordeaux’s trade flourished. Situated on the site of a former Chartreux convent (hence the name, Chartrons), this district was home to merchants of Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian, German and Irish origin. All of them built beautiful stone houses which were used as warehouses and private residences.

Built in 1833 in a neo-classical style by the Bordeaux architect Arnaud Corcelles for the Protestant consistory. In front of the wall-gable of the facade, an ionic column supports an entablature and a pediment. 10 rue Notre Dame contemporain 4
