Study abroad sends Webster student around the globe With coursework and internships in Geneva and Shanghai, senior José Mantilla says Webster University broadened his horizons and prepared him for a career in international business. José joins other study abroad students in exploring the Egyptian pyramids near Cairo.

“I always knew I would be a businessman,” says Webster University student José Javier Mantilla. The 21-year-old Ecuadorian native began working toward his life’s ambition early on. “Since I was a little kid I have been interested in business,” he explains. “I invested in stocks, I sold music cds. I even had a car washing company! “I always wanted to study business and I love to travel,” adds José. “That’s why I decided to study international business.” José says he learned about Webster University at a college fair while he was a student at the American High School of Quito. “Webster’s study abroad program and its international business degree José Javier Mantilla, a senior

are what convinced me to come here! I heard Webster’s study abroad program is one of the best in the country.” Before coming to Webster University’s St. Louis campus, José lived in Ecuador with his parents and his sister Nicole. “My father is a civil engineer. He owns a construction company and a textile factory. My mother has an import-export business dealing with vacuum pouching food supplies. I have worked with her in the business since I was 18 years old. “I decided to go to Webster because I wanted to take advantage of studying abroad and also doing an internship abroad,” adds José, who studied at Webster’s Geneva and Shanghai campuses. “While I was in Geneva I obtained

an internship at the World Trade Organization. In China I worked as an intern at International Plastic Engineering Company. “The internships were really important for me,” says José. “It’s good to work in other countries because the world is so globalized. You need to be able to manage people from all over the world. Reading and studying about it is so different than actually working in the field. After I graduate with my degree in international business I want to work in the u.s.a. for a couple of years.” José says he’s not sure exactly what the future holds in store for him. “That’s what’s so exciting! My next goal is to get a master’s degree in supply management or operational management at an Ivy League school. But I need two or three years of labor experience before I apply.” His ultimate goal is to eventually own his own business in Ecuador. “Since I live in a third

world country I want to give my people jobs and get them out of poverty. My parents want me to go out and get experience, but then come back to Ecuador because they need intelligent people running the country.” José offers some advice to students: “Get outside of your culture. Feel what it’s like to really live in another culture, to understand the problems and issues of different cultures. It’s a way to open your eyes. “And don’t judge others,” says José. “Try to understand the actions of others. Be open-minded all the time. Never close doors. I learned while I traveled that I didn’t have all the answers. Looking at other cultures I finally started understanding why people in other cultures do what they do. “Webster’s study abroad program is an opportunity you don’t want to miss,” José adds. “It’s not just a trip, it’s going to improve your chances for getting a job when you graduate. It will help you achieve international goals and show you how life is in other countries. Webster teaches you to be not just a student, but a world citizen.” n José poses in front of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France.

Webster University-Vienna was founded in 1981, at the invitation of the mayor, to serve the international English-speaking community. Vienna is a thriving center of international commerce, where the banking and business districts share the streets with the city’s famous centuriesold opera houses, cafés, magnificent palaces and the winding Danube River. The campus enrolls approximately 475 students from more than 60 nations. Webster-Vienna was the first private university to be recognized by the Austrian Ministry of Science and Research, and first in the country to offer the mba program. Plus, our cooperative agreement with the University of Vienna makes it possible for Webster students with a ba and ma in international relations to continue on to complete a Doctorate at the Institute of Political Science in Vienna. In 2000, Webster became the first American university to be accredited as an Austrian university. Webster-Vienna’s art programs have flourished through strong ties with the Austrian art community. As an art student, you can choose to study

at the Vienna campus for the spring or summer semesters any year. With more than 100 museums in Vienna, you will see art customarily only pictured in textbooks. Student Facilities and Resources Overlooking the banks of the Danube River near the United Nations offices, the Vienna campus features modern classrooms, a library, state-ofthe-art computer equipment and laboratories, art studios, a student center, student lounges, a café/restaurant and more. The Thomas K. Lang Gallery presents the artwork of local and international artists. It hosts classes, professional seminars, lectures and exhibitions and also provides student interns with an opportunity to develop and produce art exhibits. The Gallery was named for the chair of the Art Department at Webster in St. Louis, who established the art program at the Vienna campus. Living in Vienna The majority of students live in off-campus residences, located near public transportation, with fellow classmates and other Viennese students. These accommodations feature shared kitchens, a café, piano and a rock-climbing room. On-campus student apartments are also available, with graduate students receiving first priority. Amenities include comfortable bedrooms, a main living/dining room with cable television, full kitchen and bathrooms. Long known for its culture, Japan is also a major driver of the Pacific Rim and the global economy. That’s why Webster University teamed with one of Japan’s premier private universities to offer unique opportunities for students at both institutions. Through the Webster University-Kansai University exchange program, you can study abroad for a semester, a year, or even two years through the specialized Dual Degree Program. The semester and year-long study abroad programs are open to students at various levels of Japanese proficiency. If your Japanese is rusty, or very limited, you can take advantage of Kansai’s courses developed specifically for English speakers. If your Japanese is good enough, you can move straight into your courses in Kansai’s regular curriculum. For the Dual Degree Program, a Webster student spends the first two years at Webster University and the second two years at Kansai University. This is a challenging program for more advanced students. Courses at Kansai University deal with Japanese philosophy, religion, arts, history, literature, culture, law and politics, the economy and industry, science and technology and comparative Asian culture studies. n

Beijing, China In the past 30 years, China has opened its walls to become a strategic player in global economics and politics. China is now significant for the e.u., the u.s.a., and Africa, as well as its Asian neighbors. Known as the culture capital of Asia, Beijing has undergone a modern transformation amid China’s rapid economic growth and the city’s makeover for the 2008 Summer Olympics. The city is host to more than 150 embassies, as well as the Chinese government and central party that direct China’s provinces and cities. In Beijing, Webster partners with Beijing Language and Culture University, which was founded in 1962 as an institution for both foreign and Chinese-born students. It has trained hundreds of thousands of students from more than 160 countries in Chinese language and culture. All classes are taught in English. Webster offers study abroad options through the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (uag), Mexico’s oldest private university, founded in 1935. uag is coeducational, independent and autonomous. Webster students can enroll in the Spanish and Culture program at uag, where they receive language instruction based on cultural content. After an initial placement examination, students are

assigned to courses on one of eight levels, which range from beginner to fluent. Students who place in levels 6–8 may enroll in one or more regular uag courses in addition to the International Language Center program. Courses are offered every four weeks. Each level is opened with a minimum of two students and a maximum of 15. Students who place about level 8 take only regular uag semester courses. The cultural experience includes a home stay. The International Exchange Department has a list of approved families who offer room and board to visiting Webster students. Living with a host family will broaden your cultural and language experience in Mexico and is the preferred way to go for students who have no previous knowledge of the city or living abroad. n

Mendoza, Argentina Reaching from the Atlantic Ocean on the east to the Andes mountain range on the west, Argentina is the second largest country in South America and one of the largest Spanish-speaking countries in the world. To take advantage of this country’s diverse culture and languages, Webster University partners with the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, or National University of Cuyo, in Mendoza. Students with intermediate to advanced Spanish language skills will spend six weeks living with families in Mendoza and using public transportation to get to and from classes. This provides an exciting opportunity for these students to improve their Spanish skills. International Programs › Short-Term Study Abroad

Faculty-led programs open study abroad to wider audience Faculty-led, short-term programs engage students in one to five weeks abroad, often with additional work done in the classroom or online. Because not every Webster University student can spend a semester outside the country, our faculty are constantly looking at new and interesting ways to bring an international component to their programs. In many cases, these ideas lead to faculty-led, short-term programs that provide students with one to five weeks abroad with additional work done in the classroom or online. These programs often take advantage of Webster University’s international campus network and partnerships, but there’s no limit to where you can go and what you can learn! Webster University is committed to successful partnerships with all members of the Webster International Network of Schools (wins). The Office of Study Abroad supports and enhances this commitment by promoting opportunities for students, and working directly with students who choose a Webster program. One way that the Office of Study Abroad engages students, staff and faculty of the wins network is by attending scheduled study abroad fairs. These fairs are an important way for Webster University to collaborate with our affiliate partners in promoting high-quality international experiences for students. International student and faculty mobility enhances the education provided by any academic institution. Webster is proud to offer the opportunity for international faculty exchange for our partners who are committed to sending students to our international campuses. Additionally, Webster has created a financial travel award for students attending our international campuses. This is the wins Travel Award, which provides $1,000 for any wins student attending a Webster program that covers a minimum of eight weeks. In addition to supporting students’ financial needs, Webster University provides support and assistance as your students embark on an overseas experience. The Office of Study Abroad assists with a pre-departure orientation session for all groups of eight students or more. For smaller groups, all pre-departure orientation materials are sent by mail. And regardless of the number of

students attending our programs, our office is just a phone call or a “click” away! Sending a student on a Webster University study abroad program means: For the students › A $1,000 wins Travel Award for any wins student attending an approved Webster program › Personalized attention and assistance from our Study Abroad staff › For groups of eight or more, a personalized pre-departure orientation session › Representation at your Study Abroad Fairs For the institution › An invitation to our wins breakfast at the nafsa National Conference › Faculty mobility—for every 10 students, send a faculty member to teach overseas › Attendance at our biennial Site Visit and Conference, hosted at one of our international campuses. It was initially used as a vocational school for young women and most recently housed a language school. In keeping with this educational tradition, it is now home to Webster Leiden’s Living and Learning Center.
