“My grandma, mother and I are antique dealers so a romantic, vintage wedding was perfect for us” flowers. My one request was to have succulents throughout the arrangements as both my husband and I love them. The details… Our cake had beautiful lace

effect icing which reflected my dress and the antique lace theme. Each table had a different tablecentre with various arrangements of vintage glassware filled with fresh flowers. My husband and I handmade our favours: we custom-made match books filled with seeds which guests could take home and plant to celebrate our love. We also had a delicious dessert bar filled with sweets and baked goods, with thank-you bags for our guests to take home. My favourite moment… I’ll never forget the dance I had with my father. During our slow dance we busted out some of our best moves and just had some fun with it. ▲

The atmosphere... My grandma, mother and I are all antique dealers so a romantic, vintage-inspired wedding was perfect for us. Our theme was vintage lace with a light pink and turquoise colour scheme. We held the wedding in the grounds of Temecula Creek Inn, beneath 200-year-old oak trees. The grounds also featured an old miner’s house which was built in the 1800s. Inside, we had dessert tables and an antique sofa by the fireplace which really helped to bring the vintage feel of the wedding to life. The look… I loved my vintage dress. It was originally a lace design with sleeves and a sweetheart neckline, but I altered it by

The atmosphere... We both loved the idea of a big, fun party and while we wanted to create a relaxed atmosphere, the details were also important to us. An elegant garden party suited our vision perfectly. It was a beautiful sunny day and our venue was the grounds of my parents’ house. My mum spends more than 40 hours a week gardening and it showed – the gardens were amazing. We had several seating areas, but people also sat on the grass during the cocktail reception; it was lovely to see everyone relaxed and enjoying themselves. The look... My dress was an abundance of lace with a sweetheart neckline and www.weddingmagazine.co.uk

“We covered the ceiling of the marquee in pink and green paper lanterns and they made such an impact” really important to me. I enjoyed making the bouquets with the help of one of my bridesmaids, using peonies, roses, lisianthus and Queen Anne’s Lace, while my mum made all the reception flower arrangements.

The details... We covered the ceiling of the marquee in pink and green paper lanterns and they made such an impact. For a vintage touch we added mismatched antique china, chandeliers hanging in the trees and lots of lace. We had long banquet tables and each one featured several different flower arrangements in crystal and porcelain containers. Instead of one big cake, we opted for a delicious dessert table of homemade cakes, cookies and pies. They were all family recipes and labelled with each baker’s name. My favourite moment... I loved it when Jason got up with the band and played a song he’d written especially for me. ▲

one She’s the It’s time to be confident in the search for your dream dress, as newly engaged Wedding chief sub-editor Danielle Wilkins discovers

B

efore i started trying on dresses, i had a good idea of the look i was going for. i pictured something sleek and simple, with a close-fitting train. I’d pair my gown with an elaborate, sparkly headdress for a Vivien Leigh-meets-boho-bride look. Unsurprisingly, my first dress shopping experience left me in a state of confusion, because the person staring back at me in the mirror wearing her ‘dream’ – albeit very beautiful – Belle & Bunty gown didn’t quite resemble the iconic ‘30s vision i previously had in mind. In fact, I stepped into that boutique a ‘simple satin’ kind of girl, and left dreaming of full-on feathers and layers of ruffled tulle. Despite my turmoil, my first shopping trip to choose my once-in-a-lifetime gown was the most fun I’d had in ages – and as it should be. Don’t let it be a daunting experience; start your dress search armed with all the information you need, with these top savvy shopping tips.

Rule #1

Step out of your comfort zone if you have a particular colour, style and fabric in mind, it’s only natural that you’ll want to try on the dresses you instantly like the look of, but be sure to start your search with an open mind. More often than not, brides will fall in love with a gown they might not have considered before, had it not been for a friend or family member. So if the shop assistant, or your bridesmaid, suggests a design they think would look great on you, try it for size – you might find that you’re pleasantly surprised. 176

Wedding

designer ian Stuart is something of an expert when it comes to dressing brides...

Rule #2

Set a budget, and stick to it Be prepared to discuss what you’re willing to pay. If you’re realistic about what you can afford, the shop assistant will be able to advise on dresses that might suit, after all, nobody wants to fall in love with a design that’s well out of their price range.

Rule #3

Don’t underestimate the power of pants Wherever possible, be prepared. Forget those comfortable, once-white, once-elasticated pants that have been in the washing machine more times than you can possibly count –

well-fitting and supportive nude or white underwear is a must so you can see a true reflection of how the dress should fit. Don’t forget, you’ll also be standing around in your underwear a lot.

Rule #4

Bring moral support, but not the whole herd Most boutiques suggest two or three guests maximum, as too many conflicting opinions will only confuse you. Take along mum, a sister or bridesmaid; someone who loves hanging out with you in bride-mode and whom you trust to give an honest opinion. www.weddingmagazine.co.uk

WEDDING advice

Shop for your shape ♥ Hourglass (shoulders and hips in line, a nipped-in waist) DO: Embrace your curves and accentuate your waist. Bias-cut gowns work well for hourglass figures as they fall over the natural curves of the body. Show off your best asset with a gown that nips in at the waist. DON’T: Wear a design that gathers at the waist. Instead, choose a skirt that lies flat against the hips and flares out lower down, otherwise it could add bulk to your bottom half and make you look bigger than you really are. Avoid empire lines and large ballgowns that will only hide your figure.

PHOTOGRAPHY: IAN STUART (WWW.IANSTUART-BRIDE.COM); ISTOCKPHOTO

♥ Triangle (shoulders wider than the hips) DO: Balance your shoulders by adding width to your hips. Try a gathered skirt with a nipped-in waist. Soften the shoulders with pretty chiffon sleeves and opt for gowns with detail on the lower half to draw the eye downwards. DON’T: Wear spaghetti straps or a halterneck gown, these will only make you look broader. If you want to draw attention away from an ample bust, steer clear of heavy embellishment around the neckline.

Rule #5

Don’t be ruled by trends It might be a gown that’s bang on trend, but be honest with yourself when you look in the mirror, does it work for you? “The dress needs to make you look balanced,” says stylist Zoe Lem (www.zoelem.co.uk). “Look at your shoulders, hips and waist – does it give you an hourglass figure? There will always be trends, but they won’t suit everyone. The Gatsby trend is a perfect example of this. If you did want to have an element of this in your look, you could always style your dress with art deco accessories, even if you can’t wear a deco dress.” www.weddingmagazine.co.uk

♥ Boyish figures (shoulders and hips in line, an undefined waist) DO: Create the illusion of balanced curves by adding volume to the hips and shoulders and choose an A-line skirt with a gathered waist. Delicate beading in the right places can also create curves. Slim brides are the few who can pull off sleek designs by the likes of Jenny Packham and a 1920s silhouette would also work. DON’T: Opt for a column gown if you want to look curvier. Off-the-shoulder styles can also make you look

even slimmer if you have a bony collarbone or shoulders. ♥ Pear-shaped (shoulders narrower than the hips) DO: Bring the balance back by choosing an A-line skirt with a high nipped-in waist, so you can’t quite tell where your legs begin and your waist ends. If you’d love a slim 1930s silhouette, add gathered sleeves to balance your shoulders. DON’T: Opt for thin straps or halternecks; these will make you look bottom-heavy. Avoid tiered gowns and trumpet shapes. ♥ Apple shape (a rounder tummy and hips) DO: Choose pretty empire lines, which will nip you in at your narrowest point, giving you a leaner look. Wear a gown that flares from underneath the bust. A-line skirts will also work, just be sure to balance the shoulders with a voluminous cape. DON’T: Opt for column gowns or figurehugging fishtails. Basque dresses will also draw attention to your middle. Danielle’s verdict: My first trying-on session was a real eyeopener to say the least. Discovering which styles worked with my shape made me fall in love with dresses I never thought I would. In fact, the designs I liked most were the choices of Helena and Nicole, the team behind Frou Frou Bridal Boutique, and my chief bridesmaid. I may not have found my dream dress on that first visit, but I walked out of the shop brandishing my ‘shortlist’ like a lottery ticket, and it means I have plenty of other exciting visits to look forward to. “2013 is all about extremes. We’ve seen a resurgence in traditional princess-line gowns, and yet we also have figurehugging silhouettes, with an explosion of fabric ruffles and cascading beadwork. Exciting times!” RICHARD LILL at ALFRED ANGELO (pictured with his daughter Emma)

“ Tailored-fit morning suits are proving to be a very popular option for grooms next season. Blue is also making a huge comeback for 2013, as is the very slim-fit cut.” GRAHAM PHEBEY at MASTERHAND

“Lace has been the mainstay in bridal fashion for centuries, from full-on dresses to delicate lace details, and I’m happy to say that it’s not going away in 2013. Illusion necklines are also making an appearance, as are detailed belts, beadwork and lots of flowers.” BEN dICkENSON at BENJAMIN ROBERTS

“ Trends for the Paradox London bridal footwear group continue to be fashion-forward. Peep-toes are still popular, with varying heel heights, and our brides love our fabulous sparkly shoes from both Pink and Benjamin Adams” NIkkI NEWBURY at PARAdOx (pictured with editor, Ciara)

Fahion manager, Nicola Moore, and editor, Ciara, get into the Studio 54 vibe

“Think romantic lace, soft tulle, floaty organza and luxurious taffeta – Hollywood glamour is back! Short dresses are also going to be big, but styles will be understated, with elegant features and classic silhouettes.” HILARY SILVESTER at TRUdY LEE

“Wedding dresses are continually evolving, but much more subtly than the rest of the fashion world. Last season saw lots of lace and waist detailing with simpler lines, and I feel this will continue but with the use of other fabrics. Vintage seems to be very up and coming, with less structure and cleaner lines.” VIVIEN FELSTEIN at VEROMIA

“Embellished back details with lower cuts and delicate appliqué on soft tulle. Detailed straps will also be a big statement look for fashionforward brides.” RUSSELL BLACKBURN of BLACKBURN BRIDAL
