Lakeside Chautauqua is a peaceful vacation community located on the shores of Lake Erie. It has been designed as a place to rest, renew and reconnect where values, traditions and family reman the focus. See P104.

I admit it. I needed a break. Let me explain. Almost all my trips from the office are work-related. If I’m not planning a full list of activities or attractions to visit while away, I feel I’m not taking a good advantage of the alloted time. What if I miss out on an important event? What if there is a lull in my schedule? What if my time could have been used better elsewhere? I must use those hours wisely!

As soon as an issue is published, I clean my desk, file away items on my laptop and crash for 6-8 hours so I can begin again. Last month, I needed to attend a media marketplace, check in with staff from our original Ohio location, reset pastdue appointments with customers and get my technical director to work on my computer. I reasoned that was enough to head East for Memorial Day weekend. What I didn’t realize was others wanted to get away for an extended weekend getaway too. So the schedule was tight to get it all done. On my way, a couple radio announcers discussed the travel trends for the upcoming weekend. The conversation led to reminiscing about post-covid and how everybody hurried to get out of the house, do everything everywhere and go, go, go nonstop.

“That’s me,” I thought. They continued to explain how people today are stressed over politics, work loads and astounding prices. All are tired and overworked, they said. They just want to chill. I thought about that and realized our June issue can supply ideas to do just that. Our theme, small town getaways, is a great direction to take when the desire is to just sit and relax. Could I do that? Nah, I’m too busy, I thought.

Norman, my managing editor (also my tech guy) had different ideas. He said I must meet at their campsite if I wanted to get my computer worked on. Once there, it was so peaceful, I actually enjoyed sitting outside, smelling the tempting aromas coming from the grill, catching up on conversation and then watching the fire as it grew dark. I even roasted my own marshmallows for S’mores. I stayed three days - didn’t want to leave. I can honestly say I rested and left feeling refreshed, ready to do it all over again! So here’s to June getaways and I’ll go plan July . . .

Benefits of Forest Bathing

Forest bathing has many physical benefits besides the mental

and emotional ones. Studies have shown that spending time in nature can lower blood pressure, reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone), and improve cardiovascular health. Being in nature has also been linked to improved sleep quality, strengthened immune system function, and increased energy levels.

Forest bathing also offers gentle physical activity, which can improve muscle strength and flexibility. Its slow pace invites

Ironclad Distillery has purchased Kenmore Inn, now offering a B&B&B Bed and Breakfast and Bourbon.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – People love staying in a bed and breakfast. There is just something about them that makes

the overnight trip more memorable and quaint. Add to that bourbon tastings, and the idea of a B&B&B gets a lot of people taking notice. Ironclad Distillery purchased the Kenmore Inn and will now serve up beds alongside their bourbon. The bed, breakfast, and bourbon Inn is now taking reservations for overnight stays and to host special events.

“We have created a unique experience that people are going to love,” said Stephen King, founder and president of Ironclad Distillery and the Ironclad Inn & Bourbon Tasting Room. “Imagine being in the historic area of Fred-

ericksburg, sipping bourbon, and taking in this 18th-century home.”

The next step for this family-owned company was to purchase the Kenmore Inn to create the Ironclad Inn & Bourbon Tasting bed and breakfast. Founded in 2014, the trio of King family members who own the business were ready to take it to the next level. They have been thriving as a beloved local bourbon distillery, and it was time to take things up a notch.

What was once a residential property and now a B&B is located in the historical area of Fredericksburg, Virginia. A few interesting facts about the bed and breakfast property include:

•It’s from circa 1793 and features nine rooms for guests. The main bedrooms are part of the original home and feature original fireplaces, while the other bedrooms are from the addition built in the 1930s. The rooms feature antiques and have a traditional décor.

•The Inn is three stories tall and has a bourbon-tasting room for guests and the public, as well as several beautiful areas that are for relaxing.

•The bourbon tasting room is the central hub of the Inn. It serves bourbon tastings, cocktails, and a light snack menu until 8 p.m. There are also sitting areas on the property where people can relax and unwind.

•The Inn also offers various spaces and accommodations for hosting events, including corporate events, weddings, and more. The event spaces can accommodate up to 120 people and offer various options to meet planning needs.

“This is a beautiful property, and we invite people to stay here or stop by for a bourbon tasting,” added King. “Every time we convert someone into loving bourbon, we ring the bell, which has been ringing a lot. We look forward to giving everyone a taste of our family bourbon.”

The company was started in the Port of Newport News, Virginia, by Stephen King, Owen King, and Kara King. The Inn is situated within view of the most famous Civil War naval battle between the first ironclad ships. The company was named Ironclad Distillery after the location. Each batch of authentic bourbon is fermented, distilled, and bottled under one roof.

The Kenmore Inn, located in historic downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia, was built circa 1793. The new Ironclad Inn & Bourbon Tasting Room offers nine residential rooms to choose from, each with a bourbon cart. The main bedrooms are in the 18th century and provide traditional beds, original fireplaces, seating areas, and sleep for 2-3 people. Additional bedrooms are in the area of the home that was added in the 1930s and sleep two. Breakfast is served daily from 7:30 am to 10:00 am, offering a taste of the South. Coffee, tea, and water are served all day. The Bourbon Tasting Room offers tastings, cocktails, and a daily light snack menu until 8 pm.

About the Mayor: Mayor Wilbur of Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, is wrapping up his four-year term (elections always coincide with the presidential election).

As mayor, Wilbur makes numerous public appearances to support the Rabbit Hash Historical Society and animal welfare organizations. His on-line store also lends a helping paw. Mayor Wilbur has been hailed as, “One of the most honest elected officials in the area.” Wilbur’s Words of Wisdom: Rabbit Hash is called the Center of the Universe, and I can’t argue with that–it’s the center of my universe.

Yes, Rabbit Hash is a human-friendly town too. Rabbit Hash (pop.117 ) is a special place because the entire town is owned by the Rabbit Hash

Historical Society. Located in Northern Kentucky, it’s about a 45-minute drive from Cincinnati, Ohio.

One of the most popular stops is Rabbit Hash General Store built in 1831. Here, you’ll find a little bit of everything–sock monkeys, house wares, vintage clothing, and Kentucky-proud goods like food and hand-craft-

Mayor: Moose, American Bulldog FAIR HAVEN VT

About the Mayor: Newly-elected Mayor Moose, an American Bulldog, replaced the last mayor, a goat. He ran a competitive race against his sister, a calico cat, plus defeated the other candidate, a cow. His birthday is August 24th 2023, making him a puppy. His owner, Luke, says at 50 pounds (and still growing), he doesn’t look like a puppy, but his heart is as big as his body. Upcoming duties included promoting dog licensing and walking in the annual Applefest.

Words of Wisdom: Be nice to everyone, get along.

Everyone is welcome to Fair Haven, Vermont (pop. 2,736). Just stop in the Vermont Welcome Center, it’s filled with helpful humans who can link visitors with brochures and itineraries. Furry Friends will receive a warm welcome at the Fur Haven Dog Park.

Wander the large park in the center of the downtown business district with a fountain as the centerpiece. This expansive greenspace is where events are held–summer music in the park, farmer’s markets, and other special Fair Haven festivals. Downtown Fair Haven is known for having some of the best examples of Victorian architecture in the state. Dine in a pizza house, winery, and bistro–all walkable.

Ample natural beauty surrounds Fair Haven, it’s situated in the Vermont Lake Region just minutes from multiple lakes and waterfall wandering. Vermont State University (Castleton, VT) is just 10 minutes from town. Historic B&Bs, like Marble Mansion Inn, a 6,400 square foot French Second Empire mansion, and Haven Guest House, built in 1906, with beautiful wrap-around veranda are charming spots to stay the night.

About the Mayor: Mayor Parker the Snow Dog was sworn as honorary mayor of Georgetown, Colorado, on February 11th, 2020. His motto is “no job is too big or too small.” He pitches in as a therapy dog for Rocky Mountain Easter Seals Camp, supports community events and causes—and he’s the official mascot for the Loveland Ski Area (just 10 minutes from his home).

Parker’s Words of Wisdom: Speak softly, but carry a big stick.

Parker’s store and social media accounts are as active as he is, but he believes in a work- life balance. When he’s not playing outdoors, you’ll find him rooting on the Denver Broncos–he’s a huge fan.

Colorado (pop.1,280), about 45 miles from Denver. Chug on an old-steam locomotive through the Rockies. Ride the Georgetown Loop Railroad past the remains of gold and silver mines. You can even tour a silver mine or pan for gold.

At an elevation of 8,520, Georgetown offers hiking, four-wheeling, and whitewater rafting —and that’s just in the off season. Come winter skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing are big. Loveland Ski Resort is just 12 miles up the road. Georgetown Lake is a sparkling gem for boating and fishing. The lake’s west side is a wildlife viewing area where visitors often can spy bighorn sheep and mountain goats.

Stroll through the Georgetown-Silver Plume Historic District, one of the best-pre-

served historic mining districts in the state. Downtown is filled with Victorian architecture that ranges from cabins to grand mansions. Historic treasures like the Hotel de Paris (1875), a former French inn, is now a museum. Tours and preserved architecture tell stories of the Old West.

The elegant, newly-renovated Clear Creek Inn is right in historic downtown with private rooms and mountain views. Georgetown Mountain Inn offers a classic alpine experience. They even offer glass blowing workshops. The Rose Street Bed and Breakfast, built in 1882, is a Victorian home within walking distance to shops and restaurants.

A new study has revealed the most popular food and snack brands. Snipp Interactive used YouGov data to discover the US’s top food and snack brands.

1. Oreo

Oreo is ranked as the most popular food brand on Instagram, with a staggering 9,776,758 hashtags – a whopping six million more than any other food brand in the ranking. With an impressive social following of 3.6 million on Instagram, Oreo Oreo milkshakes to Oreo cakes are highlighted.

2. Kit Kat

Ranking as the second most

popular food brand is Kit Kat, with 3,783,190 Instagram hashtags. The globally recognized brand, known for its iconic combination of crispy wafers covered in smooth milk chocolate, is clearly an Instagram favorite. A staggering 1,192 million Kit Kat bars are sold in the United States alone every year.

3. Snickers

Snickers, is placed in third place, with 1,756,558 Instagram hashtags. Moreover, creators are even developing healthier snacks, such as Snickers protein bites and overnight oat recipes. According to YouGov data, 77% of people have a favorable

opinion of the brand, solidifying its place in the ranking.

4. Doritos

Doritos claims the fourth spot with 1,066,146 hashtags on Instagram. The brand has earned the title of most popular chips in the US.

5. Hershey

The fifth most beloved food brand is Hershey, with 1,060,904 Instagram hashtags. The brand is an undeniable favorite within the states, as evidenced by YouGov data, that 98% of people like the brand.

GOING GLOBAL Bordeaux, France

How this trip was planned

Last year for Christmas, my husband asked me where I would like to go for Memorial Day, 2024. I told him, “Bordeaux, France, please!” It was a good thing we planned this trip in January to be prepared. Now, the time has arrived and here we go! I am in Bordeaux, drinking wine and enjoying my 4-day extended weekend.

Day One

We had a family reunion in Ireland scheduled for the week before our getaway. So we flew from Dublin to Toulouse due to the limited non-stop flight options from Ireland to the South of France. Toulouse is a very old city and home to the Airbus company’s headquarters. We chose a four - star hotel, a Marty Tapestry Collection by Hilton, to stay in Bordeaux. It was a great choice with good rates, super clean rooms and very convenient to downtown Bordeaux.

Our first tour stop was Le Cite De Vin. Le Cite de Vin is managed by the Foundation for wine culture and Civilizations, named an accredited charitable foundation. Its missions are to protect, celebrate and transmit the heritage of wine.

Founder Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, often called the “Maharaja of Saint-Estèphe,” was not only a visionary winemaker but also an avid traveler. Seaplane history predates the famous 12 second Kitty Hawk flight make by Wilber and Orvil Wright on December 17, 1903. A Frenchman, Alphonse Pénaud, filed a patent in 1876 for a flying machine with a boat hull and retractable landing gear but was an Austrian, Wilhelm Kress, who built the first seaplane,

The first somewhat successful seaplane flight was a towed kite glider on floats that took off and landed after its 150yard flight on the River Seine on June 6, 1905. Tavares has two museums that explore the city’s history. Lake County Historical Museum is located on the first floor of the historic courthouse on Main Street and tracks all of Lake County’s history. Tavares History Museum, is a replica of the old train depot from the days when Tavares was a railroad hub for Central Florida’s citrus industry. It focuses on the history of Tavares. There is an exhibit there about seaplanes.

Splash and Dash

Jones Brothers’ Air and Seaplane Adventures is housed in a wooden administration building at Wooton Park on Lake Dora in Tavares. They offer several flight options. You can choose the Harris Chain & River Run that takes you across Lake Eustis, Lake Griffin, the Harris Chain of Lakes, and the Ocklawaha River. The Gator Tour & Attractions live up to its name by giving you an over-thetop look at Universal Studios, Sea World, and Walt Disney World. St Johns River & Springs

tour is and eco tour experience along St. John’s River, America’s only North-flowing river. The Harris Chain of Lakes Sunset Celebration is a sunset flight above the Harris Chain of Lakes, the Ocklawaha River, and Ocala National Forest. I was doing their Splash and Dash tour.

Never having flown in a seaplane, I was a bit nervous when I boarded my flight. Our pilot, Paul, put us at ease and even offered to take pictures of us boarding. We were flying in a 1978 CESSNA Fixed wing single-engine plane with just six small seats including the pilot’s. There was just me and a couple, Bob and Sue. We boarded from a dock in Lake Dora. It was a bit scary when I stepped from the solid wood dock directly into the door of the plane which was bobbing with the waves on the lake. Paul explained that the plane had a 300-horsepower engine and could reach a speed of 132mph.

He glided it over the water like a boat and rose in the air. As we

flew over Lake Dora and across the town of Mount Dora it was so much lower than a commercial flight, around 500-feet. We scanned the waters of Lake Dora and spotted an alligator. Paul circled around the Mount Dora Lighthouse. The 35-foot red and white lighthouse stands in Grantham Point Park and is the only freshwater lighthouse in Florida registered as an inland aid to navigation. Its 750-watt photocell powers a blue pulsator sending out a guiding light at the Port of Mount Dora to boaters on the lake at night.

We flew low over fields of blueberries which are currently a big crop in Lake County. The Splash and Dash part of our flight came in the middle of the lake when Paul splashed down and dashed on the plane’s pontoons along Lake Dora for several hundred feet. It was like being in a powerful boat for a few minutes and then we gracefully rose into the air again. This is an amazing experience everyone should try at least once!

The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development (TDTD) is inviting cyclists to experience Tennessee on 52 new curated road cycling routes that wind their way through the state’s picturesque landscapes. The new program, Bike Tennessee, at BikeTN.com allows cyclists to engage with the routes using the app Ride with GPS.

Tennessee has been named an Ambassador for popular cycling app Ride with GPS, making all 52 routes easily accessible across the platform. In 1841 it was ceded to the government to become part of the Federal District of Columbia, the nation’s new capital. In 1847 it was retroceded to Virginia and became Arlington County. Petite though it may be, Arlington County has so much to offer that it is a destination in itself as well as a convenient hub for daytrips to the surrounding area.

The Ball-Sellers House is the oldest extant house in Arlington. John Ball, the original owner, built the house on 166-acres in 1742. The Carlin family moved into the house after

Ball’s death and owned at least 3 slaves, who worked inside the home, Nancy and two unnamed men. Bronze markers, inscribed in remembrance, have been placed on the lawn. These “stumbling stones” are the first dedicated in the state.

The most visited sites in the 640-acre Arlington National Cemetery, the second largest in the country, are those of the heroes who are interred there, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, John and Robert Kennedy, Joe Louis, Medgar Evers, Thurgood Marshall, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the Changing of the Guard. The best way to tour the cemetery is by tram with narration and 6 tour stops.

Arlington Cemetery sits on land that was once the plantation of Robert E. Lee. The estate was confiscated by the Union in May 1861 to build forts and establish headquarters because of its proximity to southern lines. Fleeing African Americans settled there to be safe

and eventually Freedman’s Village, more a campsite, was established there in 1863. In 1865 the Freedman’s Bureau took over and founded a real village with homes, shops and schools.

On May 13, 1864 Brig, Gen Montgomery C. Meigs began burials on the grounds to ensure that the Lee’s never lived there again. Mrs. Lee left the grounds in 1861, leaving the house and Washington relics in the care of her enslaved housekeeper, Selena Gray. Selena protected the property to such an extent that the George Washington items were cataloged and taken to the Smithsonian and 33% of the furniture on the tour is original to the mansion, saved by Selena.

ens,” and it is the genesis of the Owego town name. Crossing the Susquehanna River via the lantern-lined Court Street Bridge, visitors can turn right into the heart of town and park along Front St. Specialty shops line the street and round the corner to Lake St. and up to Main. A perfectly walkable downtown has everything visitors may want. Owego is sensible for out-oftown adventures, too. It is an hour drive to Watkins Glen and Seneca Lake, half an hour to the forested trails of Waverly Reservoir, and only

It is strawberry time every June in Owego. For more than 40 years, the town has hosted a Strawberry Festival with a 5k race, block party,

and fireworks. A morning parade kicks off activities on Saturday of the weekend-long fest. Winter events include a Halloween Fest and a Holiday Showcase.

For those looking for a different kind of action, Tioga Downs Casino Resort is a short drive from Owego. Beyond the expected gaming options of a casino, Tioga Downs is also a harness racing venue where horses and their carriage riding drivers compete on a 5/8-mile oval.

downtown. Ike and Julie Lovelass opened The Owego Kitchen in 2015 after falling in love with Owego. Created by a Johnson & Wales University graduate, the menu is simple and slightly eclectic. The big seller at lunchtime is the chicken salad. Hector-based Lucky Hare Brewing runs a popular tap room right down the street. Self-serve beers are available at the most unique combo in town: Owego Donut & Beer Co. Here, the baked goods come in creative flavors and combinations and the beer selection features a wide range of local brews.

Downtown is the perfect place to get in some shopping. Antique lovers can get lost for hours in the Early Owego Antique Center. Dozens upon dozens of dealers offer everything from vintage clothing to collectables from almost every age. The center is in the former home of the J. J. Newberry Co. department store, and still displays the business’ midcentury logo on

Owego is a great hopping off point for Finger Lakes adventures. Travelers can call the quaint small town homebase while having easy access to cities like Ithaca and Watkins Glen, plus the natural wonders around the “Gateway to the Finger Lakes.”

On Front St., the Owego Parkview Inn was restored in 2019, recapturing the grandeur and glory of the circa 1867 hotel. The Inn features

The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts is pleased to once again present our popular juried fine art exhibition, Images 2024. The exhibition runs from July 1 – 31, 2024 at the Schlow Centre Region Library in downtown State College, Pennsylvania. The exhibition is located in the heart of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, which runs July 10 – 14, 2024 and attracts an anticipated 125,000 visitors.

Images 2024 is a 2-D gallery exhibition featuring drawings, paintings, pastels, mixed media, photography, hand-pulled prints, watercolors, fiber, paper, and digital art from artists aged 16 and older whose primary residence is in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Our jurors visit each exhibitor during the Festival as part of the jury process and subsequently award over $17,500 in prize money. These award winners are announced at the awards ceremony at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday during the Festival, at the Allen Street Stage. To encourage and support the visual arts on a regional basis, the Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition sets aside booth spaces for artists whose primary residence is in the following Central Pennsylvania counties: Blair, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Huntingdon, Mifflin and Union. Through the Central Pennsylvania Division of the Sidewalk Sale, many artists have been introduced to exhibiting at juried outdoor shows. All exhibitors in the Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition are subject to the same rules, pay the same fees, and are eligible for the same awards.

The Historic Village

Two very different driving routes lead visitors between Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico. When following ‘the Low Road,’ there’s plenty of gorgeous scenery to enjoy (and some wineries) as it snakes along the Rio Grande River. But a trip along the High Road will introduce you to the rural, antique, art-filled town of Chimayó.

Chimayó is perhaps best known for the Catholic church that was built here during the early 1800s. A National Historic Landmark, El Santuario de Chimayó is an absolute must-visit. Calm feelings overtake many visitors as soon as the antique structure comes into view. Pray silently in the chapel, before visiting an anteroom full of discarded crutches and reputed miraculous healings.

Religious artifacts line the walls of a second anteroom where a dusty border of red brick encircles a hole in the floor. It’s filled with a pile of what is considered sacred dirt and a small trowel. During one visit, my travel companion inadvertently stepped backwards into the dirt and soon felt better than she had in several days. At that moment, the chapel’s miraculous powers seemed very real. There’s much to learn about the history and mystery of this little village at Chimayó Museum, operated by the Chimayó Cultural Preservation Association. Located in the historic neighborhood of Plaza de Cerro, it also stands

amid a fortified row of contiguous vintage adobe buildings. Historians and architects have long considered this the best example of a vintage fortified plaza in the state.

Donated artifacts tell a captivating story of life here, during the early 1900s, as do photographs – many taken by Prudence Clark, a Presbyterian missionary schoolteacher arrived in Chimayo during 1900.

From late spring into fall, sip ultra-fresh margaritas while dining on the multi-level backyard terrace. Devour seasonal dishes such as Shrimp Enchiladas with blue corn tortillas and green chile sauce; Sopapilla Relleno – with a big scoop of guacamole – or Steak Fajitas al Estilo Chimayo (vegetarian options are also available). You just might remember this meal as the best of your trip!

The Jaramillos have also offered a cozy B&B since 1984, at their Hacienda Rancho de Chimayó. This renovated adobe family home features seven Victorian-style guest rooms. You’ll see plenty of two and three-dimensional artwork too, from woven rugs to vintage wall art. In each room wood ceiling beams complement white adobe fireplaces. With access from each room to an enclosed garden, extremely reasonable prices include continental breakfast.

Much of Chimayó’s artistry takes the form of generations-old, expert weaving. Owned by a single family since the early 1900s, Ortega’s Weaving Shop is widely known for colorful hand- and loom-woven rugs and blankets as well as coats, vests, cushions, and purses. If you’re lucky, you may even get to watch employees as they create new woven pieces on massive looms. Opened much more recently, the family’s adjacent Galería Ortega offers a wide variety of arts and crafts by other New Mexico artisans.

Block out some time to visit Centinela Traditional Arts too. Here Irvin Trujillo, his wife, Lisa, and their daughter, Emily, continue an eight generation family weaving tradition. In addition, Irvin previously fulfilled commissions from Japanese clients and Ralph Lauren. He was also a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellow 2007 and held a 2009

show at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe.

The bright and welcoming shop displays their craftsmanship and that of additional cottage and consignment weavers. And Lisa is expert in Colca – Spanish regional embroidery. Her gorgeous saltillos sell for more than $15,000. You’ll find rugs and blankets with striped designs influenced by Mexican serapes, and modern templates with bands of peach, rose, and aqua. But what you may remember most about visiting here is the Trujillo family’s warm welcome and passion for their art.

Ready to head towards Santa Fe?

As you drive south from Chimayó, stop, and browse a broad array of Indigenous art, at Theresa’s Art Gallery and Studio. In tiny Santa Cruz owner, Theresa Montoya, warmly welcomes guests to browse a staggering array of exquisite New Mexican carvings and weaving to tin pieces, by multiple artists.

Montoya’s pottery collection even draws international customers, especially for highly coveted, black-colored pieces crafted at Santa Clara Pueblo. You’ll find fantastic prices here too. She says her lack of overhead and status as a New Mexican small businessperson leads Native American artists to sell her their pieces for up to less than half of what they sell for in larger cities.

After your Chimayó visit ‘The City Different’ – Santa Fe – awaits. And you’ll only drive for about half an hour before reaching its bustling Plaza.

Visitors can opt to view the “real” Chicago through a series of walking tours, by water aboard a boat cruising the Chicago River or the world’s sole backwards streaming river, created by a public project in 1900 to protect the freshwater supply into Lake Michigan. Another way is to fly over it using state-of-the-art technology created just for the Flyover Experience. Chicago’s newest attraction is an exhilarating aerial-type experience that soars across the city at an adrenaline pulsing pace. Chicago’s nearly 3-million residents occupy 77 unique communities on 234-square-miles of land, all best introduced by Flyover Chicago.

Prior to first European contact Shikaakwa, as it was known by Native Americans, was a trading site and migratory hunting ground at the juncture of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. Robert de LaSalle pro-

duced the first written mention of an area he pronounced as Checagou in his 1679 memoir. Father Jacques Marquette, a French missionary, and Louis Jolliet, a French-Canadian trader are recognized as “discoverers” of the region in 1673. Regional tribes then established a transitory trade system with the French for the next hundred years.

A French trader of African descent burst onto the scene in 1779. Jean Baptiste Point du Sable established the first permanent trading post where the river met the lake. He was born in Haiti of an enslaved mother and French sea captain father. His mother died when he was ten and his father had him educated abroad. He spoke several lan-

guages, collected fine art and had highly developed business acumen. He was the first nonindigenous settler in Chicago where he owned 800-acres, a 5-room home, a trading post, and a complex of buildings including housing for his workers. His life embodies the qualities of the city itself, resilience, strength, creativity and the ability to embrace different cultures. Chicago is considered the Birthplace of Modern Architecture largely due to The Great Fire of 1871 that resulted in the loss of 18,000 buildings and a building boom that drew the country’s best architects. In 1885 the first skyscraper, a 10-floor, Home Insurance Building, was completed. Frank Lloyd Wright also came

and designed structures. Two, the Robie House and Unity Temple, are now UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Chicago was a hub for newcomers from 1850 through 1910, some from other cities and many European immigrants. From 1916-70 much of the movement was Black Migration from the South for economic opportunity and more than 500,000 African Americans moved to the city. WWII increased European migration because of wartime conditions. The influence of new cultures and Chicago’s unique ability to absorb new cultures and be enhanced by the inclusion is woven into the fabric of the city.

“The Bean” is an iconic artwork designed to capture the skyline and reflect it to onlookers in Millennium Park.

“Cloud Gate,” its formal name, was designed of 168 reflective

stainless-steel panels to be 33feet tall, 42-feet wide and 66feet long for a total weight of 110-tons. It is one of the largest permanent public outdoor artworks in the world and the first of its type in the US.

The Chicago Board of Trade Building was constructed in 1930. The 45-story, Art Deco, building was the tallest in the city until 1965. Atop the building’s tower stands a 31-foot, aluminum, 6-ton sculpture of Ceres, Roman goddess of agriculture, holding a sheaf of wheat and a pouch of grain. She wears a crown of wheat to represent the structure that housed the world’s largest grain exchange. Sculptor John H. Storrs left Ceres faceless. Apparently, he believed the building was so tall that no one would ever see it!

Flyover Chicago provides numerous thrills, not the least of which is soaring to sites that

are otherwise not accessible. You move through The Bean and get up close and personal with Ceres. The total experience has three sections. Part One includes an introduction to the people and places you will see. In the second section you are given explicit safety instructions. Then you are seated during the flyover as you experience an original soundtrack, smells, smoke, mist and a drone generated ride on the streets of Chicago, skimming the water and lingering around and through the most famous sites. #Experienceflyover The production was 3-years in the making and it is the first production of an urban environment. The ride is 9.5-minutes long and research has proven that is the optimum amount of time. Guests can learn about the people we meet during the flyover. All of the people and institutions are “real” Chicagoans. Don’t miss the singular items in the gift shop. It should be noted that Flyover Chicago is fully accessible for those with physical and sensory limitations. Believe it or not, the thrill is not gone. Guests can visit a number of places that were highlighted.

Manny’s Deli is a definite must. The 80-year-old deli is so iconic that it is a go to location for the Obamas and other presidents and celebrities, Clinton, Steve Harvey, etc. The menu is huge and the food is either made on site or locally sourced. They have won numerous awards and

been showcased on several food shows including “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.” I guarantee you will find your bliss. Swift & Sons Tavern is located across the street from Wrigley Field and the view of the activity around the field is almost as great as the food.

Miru at the St. Regis creates a special dining atmosphere. The chef’s specialties are shareable dishes and elegant breakfast options. Miru is Japanese for view and the view from the restaurant over the city is breathtaking. Also, note the architecture and artwork in the public spaces.

Duck Duck Goat offers Chinese-American inspired cuisine. Chef Stephanie Izard goes beyond your standard options and combines flavors in a special way. Private dining rooms are available and each room pays homage to an aspect of

Chinese culture.

Flyover Chicago is in a remodeled movie theater on the 3,300-foot Navy Pier. The pier was constructed on a base of 20,000 logs in 1916. One of the biggest events in Kokomo is the annual Haynes Apperson Festival, which celebrates the city’s automotive heritage. Named after automotive pioneers Elwood Haynes and Elmer & Edgar Apperson, this 3-day festival is packed full of family fun! The festival features a parade, car

shows, carnival rides, concerts, a sports festival, lots of food vendors, and more. Live music is scheduled every night, and the festival always draws to a close with fireworks. Good Ole’ Days Found In Lagro

If an activity has ever been described as “lots of fun,” the Village of Lagro knows how to bring it to the forefront of their Good Ole’ Days Festival.

This year, slated for June 13-15, the volunteer organizers have outdone themselves in planning a fully-packed schedule for all to enjoy. There have even been some new events added to the mix, according to spokesperson Kristie Bone.

One of the exciting new additions to the festival is the Traveling Circus, which promises to be a highlight for attendees of all ages. With FREE admission, the circus will be perform-

ing at five different time slots throughout the festival, ensuring that everyone has a chance to experience the magic and wonder of the big top.

For the fitness enthusiasts, the festival will feature a 5K Run & Walk on June 15. As one of the top art shows in the US and Indiana’s oldest juried art fair, the Talbot Street Art Fair prides itself on showcasing the best in craftsmanship and artistry, all while being one of the only admission-free juried art fairs in the state! It will again be located on Talbott Street in the picturesque district of the Heron Morton neighborhood, in the downtown area of Indianapolis.

A Rich History

The Talbot Street Art Fair has a storied history that dates back to Mother’s Day weekend in 1956. It began modestly, with just 15 exhibiting artists and craftsmen and an estimated 1,500 visitors. This early iteration of the fair set the foundation for what would become a beloved annual tradition in Indianapolis.

Supporting the Community

The Talbot Street Art Fair is not just about art; it’s also about community. As a nonprofit organization, the fair works hard to promote exceptional art pieces while supporting the local community. This support extends to providing art scholarships to Indianapolis schools and organizations, ensuring that the love for and appreciation of art is passed down to future generations.

Over the decades, the fair has grown exponentially, both in terms of participation and attendance. Okoboji Brings

Okoboji, a favorite summer destination, lies along the eastern shore of West Okoboji Lake, one of Iowa’s natural glacial Great Lakes. Visitors and residents enjoy fishing and boating on the pristine blue waters and lounging on sandy shores and lush green grass in this summer playground. The town offers a variety of accommodation venues, tasty places to dine, plenty of outdoor activities, and quaint shops to browse. Okoboji is a fabulous place to visit in the summer, but in the winter, when the lake freezes over, the winter festivities begin.

Places to Stay

The Oakwood Inn offers comfort any time of year. Owners Bill and Bridget Johnson provide luxurious rooms with well-appointed furnishings and delicious breakfast offerings. During my visit, I stayed in a spacious suite with a large jet bubble tub, a fireplace, and a lovely balcony overlooking the inn’s 2-acre oasis of gardens. Breakfast was a three-course affair beginning with yogurt and granola, followed by a scrumptious cinnamon roll topped with cream cheese frosting, and ending with a breakfast enchilada made with white tortillas, eggs, sausage, chorizo, cheese, sour cream, and green onions. Another fun place to stay is Little Swan Lake Winery, located outside of Okoboji in nearby Estherville. This fun Bed and Breakfast offers three rustluxe rooms housed in a grain elevator. The Dickinson County Nature Center is in Kenue Park, an almost 70-acre area that is unique because of its oak savanna. The center features educational exhibits, including an indoor beehive, live animals, and a bat cave. This beautiful stop is interesting for adults and children of all ages. Colorful signs with easy-to-understand information on how the local environment and animals work together in harmony educate guests. At the same time, play structures and interactive displays entertain and inform the children. Outside, guests can wander along the many walking trails in Kenue Park and discover the meadows, osprey nests, and trumpet swans. The Fish House, a favorite community hangout, is a must-visit in both summer and winter. It is believed to be the world’s largest fish shack; however, the building is a large boat. During the summer, the walls come off, life jackets hang along the roofline, and the “house” sits out on the water.

In the winter, the Fish House becomes the Fish Shack (a nod to the villages that pop up on the ice). Walls are constructed, and a 4-by-6foot rectangular hole is cut into the floor. The ice underneath the shack is cut with an auger, and a railing is built around the hole. Festivals to Attend

The University of Okoboji Winter Games is a winter free-for-all event, with the next one scheduled for January 23-26, 2025. During my winter visit, I discovered that the locals utilize this season to the fullest; the lake is frozen over for about two months each year, and this is when the real festivities begin.

This wild festival includes human foosball, snow softball, the polar plunge, snowmobile drag races, broomball tournaments, ice carving, the drill or die ice auger races, music, and a variety of tasty food. Most activities take place on the frozen lake. https://www.uofowintergames. com/

Visitors are welcome to explore the area. There is no admission. Many have written notes to Walt on the inside walls of the barn. It’s easy to see how this idyllic setting fueled young Walt’s creativity and love for nature. The actual home is now privately owned and not open to the public.
