Up Close:

From the Editor

When is the last time you felt goosebumps or a chill run down your spine from excitement? I admit a couple of my most memorable adrenaline rushes came from standing still and viewing a long-awaited scene in person. The first was the castle at Walt Disney World. The other was the Macy’s Day Parade balloons in New York City.

One Christmas, I sat on a tiny stool in the kitchen to listen as my aunt told about a recent family vacation to Disneyland in California. Her detailed description of Tinker Bell floating from the castle during the night-time fireworks made me feel like I was almost there. What would it really feel like to see that castle in person, I wondered. As time passed, my best friend moved to Orlando, Fla.

I was an adult before the occasion finally arrived for my first visit. As I crossed the lake on the ferry boat toward the Magic Kingdom. the spires of Cinderella’s Castle towered above the trees. The view of the castle from the lagoon as we arrived at the park was the most thrilling sight I’d ever experienced up to that point.

I was already a grandmother when I made it to New York. Seeing how large those balloons were made me feel like I could reach up an almost touch them. A personal visit is a thousand times better than watching the parade on TV. It was definately a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

However, this issue has taught me that I’m not finished with exciting adventures. There are so many more items I’ve added to my bucket list after reading these articles. I’ve learned you can go sleep in a barn with giraffs in Texas, come nose to nose with alligators on airboat rides in Florida, cross a bridge 2500 feet above ground in Alaska and that’s only three of the many, many adrenaline rush experiences our writers have found to share with you. So let’s get busy and start planning our next extended weekend getaway. Until next time...

TRAVEL TRENDS: ADVENTURE Soar & Explore: Extreme

For those who dare to dream beyond the ordinary, the allure of adventure travel cannot be ignored. Adventure travel involves travel or exploration with some degree of risk, either real or perceived, and may require special skills and physical exertion. It can include physical activity, cultural exchange, or natural activities.

The market size of global adventure tourism was estimated at approximately 288 billion U.S. dollars in 2021. According to Next Move Strategy Consulting, they forecast this figure will grow steadily in the coming years, peaking at roughly 2,824 billion U.S. dollars by 2030.

Adventure tourism includes a variety of air, water, and land activities. From the heights of skydiving to the depths of scuba diving, the thrill of the unknown and the excitement of exploring new places is a daredevil’s dream. I am often seeking out adventure when I travel. I usually say I’m hunt-

ing for soft adventure, but I’ve had a few extreme adventures. Join me as we embark on a journey through various destinations that offer different types of adventure travel, highlighting heart-pounding, adrenaline-fueled experiences, and many are fun for the whole family.

Hot Air Ballooning

Ride a hot air balloon and float over whimsical landscapes. I recently rode over the Sonoran Desert in Arizona with Hot Air Expeditions. We were able

to watch the sunrise from the balloon. Many destinations offer hot air ballooning, which provides an unmatched aerial view while you enjoy a touch of adventure.

Off-Road Tours

Navigate through rugged terrains and adrenaline-pumping off-road trails. Whether you’re behind the wheel of a 4x4, riding a mountain bike, or a four-wheeler, off-road tours promise an extraordinary heart-pumping adventure.

Extreme Adventures

Zorbing

Get ready to roll down the hill in Tennessee inside a giant transparent ball. Outdoor Gravity Park in Pigeon Forge offers this adrenaline-inducing adventure experience. I visited last year, and WOW, what an experience! I wrote about it for Extended Weekend Getaways in the July 2023 issue.

Prepare to get wet and have fun as this quirky, yet thrilling, zorb activity guarantees laughter and exhilarating sensations for the whole family.

Scuba Diving

If Scuba Diving is on your adventure bucket list. I have two places to recommend: The Outer Banks in North Carolina and Bonaire in the Caribbean. In the Outer Banks, you will find old ships and other exciting items under the sea.

Bonaire is the lesser known “B” of the ABC islands and an ideal family destination for beachy island adventures. The island has no traffic lights, so this hidden gem is laidback and off-grid. It is a water sports hot spot offering scuba diving, snorkeling, and windsurfing.

Scuba diving in Curaçao includes diving through aban-

doned shipwrecks and magical underwater caves.

Aquafari Underwater

Scooter Tours

I want to try this travel adven-

ture: Imagine taking a self-propelled submersible scooter on an underwater journey to effortlessly glide alongside sea turtles and other underwater creatures. This underwater adventure is available in Curacao.

Caves

A visit to Ruby Falls in Chattanooga is a fun adventure for the whole family. You will find the tallest underground cave waterfall, 260 feet below the earth’s surface. Ruby Falls also offers ziplining and other fun activities. While there, stand atop Lookout Mountain, where you can view seven states with the naked eye.

Another cave adventure awaits at the Dunbar Cave State Park in Clarksville, Tennessee. It is the only publicly accessible cave in the world where visitors can see 14th-century Native American Mississippian art.

Swimming with Whale Sharks

If you are heading to Cancun for vacation in May, consider swimming with whale sharks at the luxurious JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa. Whale sharks migrate through the waters in May, offering travelers one of the world’s only ethical whale shark encounters. Dive in to see these majestic animals for yourself!

Cliff Jumping

I know many who have jumped from the cliffs on Raystown Lake near my home in Pennsylvania. But for higher cliffs and a more adventurous experience, you should head to Bonaire in the Caribbean for a hike and cliff jump at Washington Slagbaai National Park.

Rock Climbing

Clarksville, Tennessee, of-

fers a top-rated rock-climbing location at Kings Bluff Park. King’s Bluff is great for both novices and experts.

Abseiling

Also known as rappelling, abseiling is the controlled descent of a steep slope, such as a rock face, by moving down a rope you control. Adventure seekers can abseil in many places in the U.S. Table Mountain overlooking Cape Town in South Africa provides the thrill-seeking, unforgettable experience of rappelling the world’s highest commercial abseil at over 3,000 feet. Abseiling down Table Mountain is guaranteed to get the daredevil’s heart racing.

Kayaking in the Dark

A unique and otherworldly feature of Florida’s Space Coast beaches is bioluminescence. The tiny bioluminescent plankton in the Indian River Lagoon and the Mosquito Lagoon emit a mesmerizing blue-green glow,

creating a stunning display of natural light in the water. Visitors can experience this magical phenomenon by participating in guided kayak tours or paddle-boarding excursions after dark. You can also experience this in Texas. I did this when I visited Corpus Christi, and it was a memorable adventure.

Sky Bridges

In the Smoky Mountains of Gatlinburg, TN, you can experience the longest pedestrian suspension bridge on the continent. The Gatlinburg SkyBridge is 700 feet across a deep valley 1,800 feet above sea level. Halfway across the bridge is the famous 30 feet of glass.

Adventure enthusiasts can also find a sky bridge in Alaska. Veilbreaker Skybridges at Girdwood’s Alyeska Resort is suspended 2,500 feet above the valley floor and spanning 600 feet. The sky bridge offers a bird’s eye view of the majestic Alaska landscape.

Kiteboarding

Kiteboarding, or kitesurfing, is a sport in which a rider rides a small surfboard while being propelled across water by a large kite to which the rider is harnessed.

Turks and Caicos is known for kiteboarding due to its consistent trade winds and shallow, warm waters. Travelers can also get their adrenaline pumping with kiteboarding in Curaçao.

Fun Fact:

Kiteboarding will be making its official Olympic debut in 2024.

Land Sailing

Land sailing, also known as land yachting, sand yachting, or dirtboating, entails overland travel with a sail-powered vehicle, similar to sailing on water.

In the U.S., California and Nevada are the most popular land sailing destinations. You can also find places in South Carolina and Florida. Bonaire also offers this unique sport powered by their signature tradewinds.

Ziplines

Ziplines are a popular activity among adventurers. Soaring Treetop Adventures in Durango, Colorado, and ZipTour Ziplines at Gunstock Mountain Adventure Park in New Hampshire offer excellent experiences.

Soaring Treetop Adventures is

a day-long activity. You ride a train through the mountains to get to the ziplines. Then, you zip at all altitudes. When I did it, I zipped over a bear in the river.

At ZipTour, you’ll soar for more than 1.6 miles at speeds up to 65 mph. Ziplining is one of many ways to play in the trees; Gunstock is also home to New England’s most extensive aerial obstacle course, with eight courses and 91 challenges.

Horseback Safaris

Embarking on Horseback Safaris at Tswalu, riders traverse the Kalahari, becoming part of the landscape. They are surrounded by the tranquil sounds

of nature and the rhythm of hooves, bringing them closer to the wildlife.

Whitewater Rafting

Various rivers across the U.S. offer Whitewater Rafting opportunities. I especially enjoyed Defiance Rafting in Glenwood Springs on the Colorado River and Smoky Mountain Rafting in Gatlinburg on the Pigeon River.

Most have various levels of rapids, so you can decide how adventurous you wish to be. It can be a float, or you can take on ferocious rapids for an extreme sports challenge.

Surfing

Many people think of California when it comes to surfing. The Space Coast in Florida is known as the “East Coast Surfing Capital,” and the presence of consistent waves makes for some exhilarating surf adventures.

Surfing is also huge in Jacksonville, and the beaches provide some of the best surfing spots in the state.

The world is full of opportunities to push the boundaries and explore the extremes. These destinations offer just a glimpse into the rich tapestry of adventure travel. Adventure travel isn’t just about the activities; it’s about the new perspectives gained, the limits tested, and the unforgettable memories created. Where will your adventurous spirit take you next?

RECIPE FOR LIVING Award-Winning Pineapple

What Gives you an adrenaline rush?

Bungee jumping? Ziplining? Skydiving? I’ve never done any of these, and at my age, I don’t plan to start now. However, every time I think about this topic, these are the activities which come to mind. For those with lower expectations, floating in a hot air balloon, riding a bicycle or driving faster than normal is enough to get the blood pumping.

The anticipation might be the best part of most activities. It certainly is for me anyway. You see, I am retiring from my full-time job this month. I am really looking forward to it! I have all sorts of interests. Just thinking about some of the fun things we have planned is enough to get me energized. For the sake of honesty however, I should include a disclaimer. You see, I am a natural-born spectator.

Therefore, I will probably get most of my thrills from observing rather than participating. I feel this is a very necessary role because for every event, someone needs to be the photographer. At least, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it! There’s nothing new here. In

my younger years I was always the designated purse and camera holder, especially whenever a roller coaster was involved.

Considering I wasn’t adventurous enough to even attempt the above-mentioned activities might be one of the reasons I’ve never won any gold medals. Or silver. Or bronze. Not even wood, plastic or paper, for that matter. I’ll never become a pro at anything athletic.

I’m not saying it isn’t possible; I’ve heard of people who discover a hidden talent or skill late in life. Some made it into a second career and others turned pro and have the accolades to prove it.

In my case, I turned an interest into a hobby, then into a business.

This was followed by turning the business back into a hobby, which led to another interest. That pretty much brings us to the present. Confused? Understandable. Stay with me and it will become clear.

My interest in baking became a hobby of cake decorating which became a full-service bakery.

Then I switched careers to teaching, but still dabbled in baking as a hobby. With time, experimenting with recipes went from an interest to a hobby by writing about foods. History is repeating itself by turning this into a new occupation.

Knowing about my being on the verge of retirement, our

Extended Weekend Getaways

Editor in Chief decided to help keep me busy. She did this by giving me a new assignment. You may be familiar with our holiday edition of Season’s Eatings. For the past 20 years, this has been published just prior to the busy Thanksgiving and Christmas season. After two decades of deliciousness, we are pleased to announce a summer

edition of Seasonal Eatings. This will be the premier issue of what we expect to be a monthly publication.

Start thinking about your favorite recipes and submit them for a chance to win our golden spoon award. Not to mention a place in history within the pages of this keepsake issue.

Here’s one such recipe to help you get started:

AWARD-WINNING PINEAPPLE CAKE

2 c. flour

1 ½ c. sugar

2 tsp. baking soda

¼ tsp. salt

2 eggs

2 tsp. vanilla

1 can (20 oz.) crushed pineapple

Combine dry ingredients then add eggs, pineapple and vanilla. Mix well. Pour batter into lightly greased and floured 9 X 13 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 25 minutes until golden brown and cake begins to pull away from edges of pan. While cake is baking, prepare topping. Melt one stick butter, add 1 c. sugar and six ounces of condensed milk. Bring to a boil and boil for two minutes. Remove from heat and add 1 c. coconut, 1 c. chopped pecans and 1 teaspoon

vanilla. Once cake is done, remove from oven and while it is still warm, poke holes in top surface with a fork. Pour hot topping over cake and allow it to soak in. Serve chilled.

As always, there are a few variations to this dessert. For a sweeter version, use pineapple packed in syrup rather than in it’s own juices. Because of allergies, I was not able to add coconut or nuts to the topping. I followed all the directions except adding these and the result was a pudding-like texture which needed no icing. Although it is not pictured, it is delicious with a dollop of whipped cream on top.

Yes, the title really is Award-Winning Pineapple Cake. I have no idea what type of award it was or when it was bestowed upon this recipe. Nor was I given any informa-tion on who created it. Howev-er, I do know one thing: I agree with whoever the judge was who chose this creation and declared it worthy of the title. So, once again, be sure to send us your best recipes. I can’t wait to see how my first attempt at being a managing editor of a project of this size will turn out. I’m looking forward to in-forming our readers about our winners. (See Page 2 to submit a recipe.)

And THAT is how I experience an adrenaline rush.

Traveling Through History

In these times of differing historic perspectives, difficult conversations and divergent interpretations, it is perfectly understandable that when planning travel with children, parents would consider omitting controversial historic sites and exhibits. While these issues may make parents and caregivers uncomfortable the benefits of such a trip for the family far outweigh any perceived negatives. Two of those relevant benefits are a quality family bonding experience and the learning of new and reinforcement of academic and life skills.

The following practices are guaranteed to ease your travel to historic sites with children.

• Planning is essential. Choose your sites wisely to ensure that the information

your children will receive is accurate and as nonbiased as possible. Sites have websites that should be mined for information regarding scheduling, special children’s programming, facilities, parking, dining services and, if needed, special needs accessibility. Maps, guides and information are usually available and are invaluable when deciding on a schedule and choosing appropriate attire for the day.

• Engage your children in a conversation on the site to familiarize them on what they will see and do. Allow them to select those activities that interest them. This is a great time to set behavioral expec-

tations for the entire family. Smaller children should expect to receive a lanyard, for tucking inside their clothing, with contact information written on it. Refrain from dressing smaller children in clothing with their name or other identifying information printed on it.

• Upon arrival stop in the visitor center to gather information and view any orientation films, exhibits and interactive displays. Before leaving the center designate a meeting place in case the group is separated.

• Make the visit engaging and fun. Encourage photo

History With Children

stops with the goal of making an album at trip’s end. This will encourage children to be creative and make selections based on critical thinking skills. Note taking and artifact treasure hunts promote the making of connections between the site and their current school curriculum. Urge participation in interactive activities because children learn more using a multisensory approach.

• After the trip keep the momentum going with guided conversations about the trip. Ask open-ended questions so the responses generate further discussion. What was your favorite part of the trip and why? Talk about any photographs taken and activities in which they participated.

Traveling with children has a huge payoff. Being part of a historic tour helps them understand the larger world, those events that shaped us and connect with our daily lives. It inspires confidence and can introduce children to new areas beyond the standardized curriculum.

Take the opportunity of a family vacation to create special and lifelong memories with your children.

Rothrock State Forest spans over 96,000 acres, encompassing four state parks, Whipple Dam State Park, Greenwood Furnace State Park, Trough Creek State Park, and Penn-Roosevelt State Park each offering unique natural landscapes and a variety of activities.

Gravel riders will find steep inclines and rewarding flat paths. Single-track trails traverse fern gardens, rock-strewn ridges, and streams offering challenges for both novice and seasoned mountain bikers.

Alone, Penn-Roosevelt State Park, situated in the isolated Stone Creek Kettle area of the Seven Mountains region offers over 100 miles of forestry roads for gravel biking. Nearby Cooper’s Gap is well-known for mountain biking.

Continue your cycling adventures at Bald Eagle State Forest just 45 minutes from State College. This vibrant year-round recreational area offers over 100 miles of forestry roads and 48 miles of mountain bike trails. The trails promise breathtaking vistas and heart-pounding ascents, making every pedal stroke worth the effort.

For the competitive rider, Rothrock State Forest and Bald Eagle State Park host multiple off-road cycling competitions including the seven-day Trans-Sylvania Epic, the Wilderness 101 endurance race, and Rothrock Trail Mix, an IMBA Epic adventure, and the Rothrock GRIT Gravel Grinder.

For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, Black Moshannon State Park provides a scenic backdrop for family-friendly rides around its blackwater lake and through vibrant bog habitats, where wildlife sightings are part of the adventure.

South of State College at the Raystown Lake Recreational Area, mountain biking enthusiasts can experience the Allegrippis Mountain Biking Trails, a 36-mile, stacked loop trail system designed by MTB riders and built by the Army Corps of Engineers in conjunction with the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA). This trail system known as one of the best in the Keystone State offers a flowy ride with moderate to vigorous inclines, stream crossings, and spectacular lake views.

In addition to cycling, all the state parks and recreational areas feature an extensive network of trails to satisfy casual hikers and serious trekkers alike.

The Standing Stone Trail with its famous Thousand Steps offers a historical ascent that reaches back to the days of quarry workers. This challenging 84-mile-long trail stretches from Cowans Gap State Park to Rothrock State Forest.

The trail offers diverse terrain, including rocky ridges, lush forests, and demanding climbs.

For their effort, hikers are rewarded along the way with stunning views of the Pennsylvania countryside, including vistas of the Tuscarora Mountains, the Allegheny Front, the Juniata River, and Raystown Lake.

Those who don’t feel up to the extended trek have the option to hike the 3.5-mile Thousand Steps section. Its name comes from the more than one thousand steps (1036 to be exact) built into the mountain in the early 1900s to transport workers to a sandstone quarry on top of the mountain.

Named Pennsylvania’s 2016 Trail of the Year, this steep section of trail leads to the top of Jacks Mountain. This glacially-carved mountainside developed during the last Ice Age leaving behind fossils and petrified wood making it a geologically significant place.

Another popular section of the trail is the Alan Seeger Natural Area. This tract of old-growth forest highlights a variety of rare plant and animal species and passes by several historic sites. The Natural and Wild Areas of Rothrock State Forest are some of the most unique and interesting sections of the forest. All feature extraordinary ecosystems, providing habitats for scarce species. Thickhead Mountain Wild Area offers an extensive wilderness of mixed-oak forest while Bear Meadows Natural Area surrounds a

fen wetland featuring Black spruce, red spruce, balsam fir, and highbush blueberry.

Southwest of Raystown Lake is Trough Creek State Park which features several natural attractions, including Balance Rock and Rainbow Falls. The park’s breathtaking scenery makes it a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The extensive trail system of the small but mighty Penn-Roosevelt State Park offers over 20 miles of hiking pathways including a portion of the famous Mid-State trail. The park’s remote location makes it popular with campers looking to get off the grid.

A short drive from Penn State’s campus is the Nittany Mountain Conservancy. Here you will find hiking trails catering to both casual walkers and serious hikers. Each path offers a unique view of Central Pennsylvania’s lush landscape.

Take the trail for the Mike Lynch Overlook. The hike to the overlook is less than one mile but there is a 600-foot vertical climb. However, once you arrive you will be treated to panoramic views of State College and Penn State’s Campus including views of Beaver Stadium.

For anglers, paradise can be found in Central Pennsylvania’s streams, rivers, and lakes.

Abundant with trout, fly fishing enthusiasts will find tranquility and the potential for excitement with each cast into the clear waters of Spring Creek. It is said that the Fisherman’s Paradise section of Spring Creek has “more wild fish per mile than any other stream in the state.” Some on the internet call it, “legendary.”

If you’re a fan of bass fishing, Raystown Lake is your ideal destination. This lake is recognized as the Freshwater Striped Bass Capital of the Northeast United States. It’s famous for holding the Pennsylvania record for the largest freshwater striped bass ever caught—a massive 53-pound, 12-ounce fish, landed in 1994.

The centerpiece of Bald Eagle State Park is the Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir,

a 630-acre lake teeming with various fish species. Anglers can fish from the shore or by boat, targeting bass, pike, and trout. For more adventurous spirits, ice fishing is available during the winter months.

The adventure continues beneath the surface in the fascinating world of underground caverns.

Penn’s Cave offers a remarkable boat tour through America’s only all-water cave open to the public. Visitors will marvel at the intricate limestone formations adorning the cave’s ceilings and floors as reflections of these geological structures dance across the cavern’s clear waters.

Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks welcome more terrestrial spelunkers. These two incredible limestone caverns feature extraordinary stalactites, stalagmites, calcite crystal flowers, and other rock formations formed over millennia.

Visitors can take guided tours through the caverns where they will learn about the history and geology of the caverns. You’ll observe unique features such as the “Frozen Niagra,” the largest active flowstone formation on the East Coast, and Whisper Rocks’ extraordinary “Cathedral.”

Have you ever imagined being Huckleberry Finn paddling the Mississippi River as a kid? Or how about pretending to be Lewis and Clark starting on an adventure under the St. Louis Gateway Arch? I remember having these dreams as a child, and with an adventurous spirit, it was no surprise that I paddled on the Mississippi River many years later.

Embarking on a paddle down the Mississippi River in St. Louis is a thrilling adventure, not for the faint of heart. The river’s fast-moving, muddy waters and the sight of commercial barges gliding under the iconic Eads bridge create an adrenaline rush like no other. But fear not, for with the expert guidance of the world-class adventure company Big Muddy Adventures, this heart-pounding experience is within your reach. Discover one of the most unique ways to view the Gateway Arch.

The morning of our scheduled micro-paddle, we showed up at the Gateway Arch’s base along the Mississippi’s banks past the St. Louis Riverboats. The weather was disappointing; with misty rain coming down, we weren’t sure if we

Mudding Down The

would proceed. With their impeccable safety record, it was deemed uncomfortable (we would get wet) but perfectly safe to go on our paddling adventure. After watching the canoe being put into the water and brought to the banks, we stepped into the canoe.

Bundled up in rain gear, we paddled upstream to-

wards Eads bridge. Paddling was tremendously harder than I thought it would be. I thought that being fit would make paddling a piece of cake. Boy, was I wrong! Moving the paddle in sync with nine other people takes considerable energy. We often laughed as we tried to match our stroke with the person sitting before us and accidentally tapped paddles with the person behind us.

As our canoe gracefully glided under the Eads bridge, a sense of awe washed over me. To see this national landmark from such a unique perspective was truly a moment of reflection. The Eads

Bridge, celebrating its 150th anniversary as the world’s first steel-truss bridge this year, is a testament to human ingenuity, engineering, and perseverance. It reminded me of the Brooklyn Bridge as we passed its massive pillars.

Our plan was to reach the third bridge, but our group only managed to paddle under two bridges and the power plant before we had to turn back. As we approached the power plant, a passing barge caused us to bounce a little. Then, Matt, one of our guides, shouted, “Paddle faster! We’re not moving!” I was under the impression that we were already paddling at

our maximum, but when I looked around, it seemed like we were standing still, with the water rushing beneath us. It was a surreal and thrilling moment.

We turned around after paddling like our lives depended on it. The return trip was more relaxing. We could take the oars out of the water and let the current take us back to the arch. What a sight to approach the magnificent Arch by water. It gave me goosebumps that I was rowing on a path that explorers took hundreds of years ago.

It is quite the experience to paddle on the mighty Mis-

If you feel unsure and aren’t ready to tackle this one-of-a-kind adventure, Big Muddy Adventures offers beginners a chance to paddle on calmer lakes and even rent boats in Forest Park. Whichever adventure you choose, Big Muddy Adventures will make sure you have a fun and safe paddle.

When you visit St. Louis, Union Station is a lovely hotel within

walking distance of all downtown attractions. This National Historic Landmark was the largest railroad station in the world when it opened in 1894. In its heyday, it had 42 tracks running by 12 railroad companies; when renovated into a hotel, it kept its railroad history intact. Railroad company doors lead you into luxurious suites, and the massive lobby has a fantastic light show in the evenings on the hour showing Union Station’s history. Stay longer and have delicious snacks while watching 18 varieties of light shows on the ceiling.

Throughout the Union Station complex, there are more adventures. A Fire and Light Show in the lake features a

100-foot-long waterfall, and dancing lights happen in the evening. The St. Louis Aquarium is a family interactive fish extravaganza with spitting water fish, talking otters, and sharks swimming overhead. An obstacle ropes course, mini golf, a carousel, and a giant Ferris wheel let you see downtown St. Louis from high above. All of this and more to downtown St. Louis makes Union Station an ideal location to stay.

St. Louis might not be your first thought when planning an adventurous vacation, but it should be. With the numerous water activities, natural parks, botanical gardens, and greenway trails offering miles of biking and hiking trails, you can find the perfect outdoor adventure in St. Louis. What are you waiting for?

tanding among rocks shaped by years of wind and water erosion, it’s easy to think you’re on another planet rather than in the panhandle of Nebraska. Carved over millions of years, Toadstool Geologic Park is Nebraska’s version of the Badlands.

Toadstool Badlands

Dating back more than 30 million years, when Nebraska was part of a prehistoric sea, Toadstool Geologic Park is aptly named as some rocks resemble toadstools. Rising above the prairie grass in the Pine Ridge, Toadstool’s formations are the result of water and wind erosion among siltstone, sandstone, and clay. With fossils embedded in the stone, visitors often enjoy fossil hunting, though it’s illegal to remove any of them.

With three trails, Toadstool Geologic Park challenges hikers, taking them to a prehistoric bison skull site and campgrounds, as well as along sandstone formations and crevices. It’s easy to spend a full day experiencing the park’s nature and history.

Toadstool Geologic Park’s three trails vary by difficulty. While none is easy, the one-mile interpretive Trail Loop offers the easiest level. You’ll hike among the stones and formations, climbing steep inclines to spots with magnificent views of the Oglala National Grassland.

he Bison Trail splits midway through the inter

pretive trail, following a canyon three miles to the Hudson-Meng Bonehead Education and Research Center. Here you can view fossils from extinct bison. With more than 500 bison identified here, about 10,000 years old. They are a far cry from modern bison, growing to about 15 feet long with nearly three-foot-long horns.

A five-mile loop begins at the park’s campground and takes hikers to the Bison Trail and Toadstool Campground. Hikers can also follow the trail in reverse order, ending in the parking lot.

Located about 90 minutes from Scottsbluff, the road to the park traverses about 15 miles of gravel. Along the drive, visitors get a taste of what awaits them with small buttes, formations and miles of prairie grass blowing waving in the wind. You may even see wild pronghorn antelopes grazing.

Since Toadstool Geologic Park is located in a secluded area, you’ll want to plan to stay at nearby

Our Heritage Guest Ranch offers a true ranching experience, just feet away from the entrance to Toadstool Geologic Park.

Believing in recycling, much of the ranch’s accommodations include refurbished material. The house that owner Jean Norman lived as a youth includes two bedrooms and a full kitchen. People need to bring their own food and other supplies.

to ride, guests are welcome to bring their own equines to ride as they explore the scenery of the ranch with Toadstool as a backdrop.

The barn includes two apartments built using locally-sourced lumber. A refurbished electrician’s trailer acts as a communal kitchen. Three traveling trailers have been parked and used for lodging with each capable of sleeping two people. Food and personal supplies need to be provided by guests. The ranch is open May 1-Oct.1 (weather permitting).

Founded in 1887 by homesteaders, the ranch features a variety of activities for guests beyond hiking through the park. A popular attraction, guests often follow owner Jean Norman and her team around the ranch, taking part in the daily chores, such as repairing fence posts and interacting with livestock.

Norman, an artist by trade and rancher by heritage, teaches a class on how to develop a relationship with a horse. No one should saddle up a horse without knowing about the animal, Norman said. While she no longer offers horses for people

Another popular outing is surface fossil hunting. Since no digging is allowed, guests are allowed to keep any fossil they find on the ground, some may be small while others may be a bison skull.

Only a few miles from Toadstool Geologic Park, High Plains Homestead offers a glamping-style trip back to the Old West. With four themed rooms and a main cabin, the campground also has four RV spots and room for tents. Bring your own linen or sleeping bag for the stay. Open May 1-Oct. 31, High Plains Homestead requires a two-night minimum stay.

With an Old West town, guests can visit an oldtime post office, schoolhouse, log building, and mercantile, or spend time in jail. Visitors are encouraged to explore the homestead’s 40 acres, offering impressive views of the grasslands.

A trip to Toadstool Geologic Park takes you through millions of years of evolution in Nebraska’s panhandle. From the state’s badlands to a look at life as homesteaders, you’ll never look at the Cornhusker State the same way again.

The first enslaved Africans were brought to the Arkansas area during the French and Spanish colonial era. Six were listed in the first census in 1723 at the establishment of the settlement and by 1798 56 enslaved were documented in the final census prior to the Louisiana Purchase. People of African descent, both free and enslaved, have been present from the founding of Arkansas, in its years as a territory, statehood, secession and the 20th and 21st centuries. www. littlerock.com

The labor of the free and enslaved was so beneficial to the economy that importation continued at a furious pace until the white population grew alarmed at their numbers. The vast majority of the slaves worked in rural areas, on plantations or small farms. An 1842-3 law made it illegal for any free black to enter Arkansas and in 1850 all adult freedmen were forced to leave or be re-enslaved.

When, on May 6, 1861 Arkansas seceded from the Union the 1860 Federal census reflected that there were 111,115 slaves, 144 freedmen and a white population of 324,125 statewide. A Civil War quickly followed, ending in 1865, when all for-

It may seem odd to begin a voyage to the frontier days of Arkansas Territory with a trip to a world-class museum, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, established in 2011 under the auspices of philanthropist Alice Walton. The museum was founded to feature the American spirit through the lenses of cultural diversity, art and nature. The permanent collection contains approximately 3,000 artworks incorporating five centuries of creativity and art as a medium for transmitting stories and culture. greaterbentonville.com

Crystal Bridges American Art Museum was created by Alice Walton. She wanted to make art accessible to rural communities. The museum was designed by architect Moshie Safdie to blend into its 120-acre setting within a ravine in the Ozark Forest. It was named after a local, natural, spring. On the exterior there are six trails greater than 5-miles of pathways and sculptures. The trails join the museum with Downtown Bentonville. The museum is free with

Titus Kaphar’s equestrian portrait of Andrew Jackson is a perfect place from which to launch a journey into the early, frontier, history of the state. Andrew Jackson was a pivotal figure in the cultural and political movements in the early years of the US. He was hailed a hero but more recently his image has been seriously tarnished by his treatment of the indigenous people. Kaphar whose genius lies in his ability to “paint” a story that reveals itself in layers until truth and reality are made visible. The Jackson portrait has strips of canvas attached that feature his own statements regarding the displacement of the indigenous people. The hooves of his horse are golden and his facial expression is one of superiority and awareness of his total immunity from any consequences.

Ride-The-Wind And Get Nose To Nose With An Alligator

To say the least, this was a thrilling airboat ride with Captain Randy and his private air-boat charger company, Ride-The-Wind. And that’s exactly what we did - we rode with the wind!

You would think the Everglades would provide a slow glide through marshy grasses, maneuvering ever-so-carefully not to disturb the animals below the surface. Nope. Not even close.

With the roar of the engine revving to life, I felt a surge of excitement as the wind immediately whipped past us and we sped across the water, leaving a trail of spray in our wake. Captain Randy navigated with precision, weaving through narrow channels and skimming over shallow marshes with ease.

As we picked up speed, my heart pounded with exhilaration. The thrill of the open air,

the rush of adrenaline—it was an experience unlike any other. But it wasn’t just the speed that made this adventure unforgettable. The natural beauty surrounding us was nothing short of breathtaking. The vast expanse of the Everglades stretched out before us, teeming with life and wonder. Captain Randy is extremely knowledgeable about this area and shared various points of interest, making sure we got a a full-scale tour of life within the Everglades. He has over 40 years of airboating experience under his belt, plus a stint as a scuba diver for NASA Space Center.

As we ventured deeper into the heart of this untamed wilderness, I couldn’t shake the feeling of awe and reverence. But amid the tranquility of nature, there was always the thrill of the ride. And aligators. REAL aligators. BIG aligators. While the others in my party insisted the aligator that came right up to our boat was fishing for fishfood, I was convinced it wanted people food. It’s jaws quickly

snapped open and I did not wait to see what it was snapping at. Like the speed of light, I jumped up and was across to the other side of the boat in a split second. The others in my group laughed and explained it was after a fish but I didn’t see any fish.

As our journey came to an end and we returned to the dock, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experience. Ride The Wind gave us more than just a thrill ride. It was an entertaining, educational, enlightening tour that gave me a new perspective on the Everglades.

So if you’re looking for an adrenaline-fueled adventure, head to Ride-The-Wind Private Air-Boat Charters in Fort Lauderdale. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or simply seeking a new way to experience the beauty of nature, this is one adventure you won’t soon forget.

“Thank you so much, Captain Randy!”

Safari Blends Meadow Ranch

The Steakhouse is open Tuesday –Sunday. Reservation Required.

Working with several conservation groups and traveling to different countries to better understand how humans can make a difference in an animal’s habitat, Navarro looks to share her experience with others in a safe and unique way.

The Story Behind It All

During a trip to Africa, Kristin and her husband were awakening to what their purpose in life should be - turning Oak Meadow Ranch into a place where guests can learn about animal conservation firsthand while enjoying other amenities, including a 5-star restaurant and wedding destination.

Kristin says lofty dreams and an unbridled passion for the Old West spurred her desire to create the ultimate ranch destination. With the loss of her stepmother, she was led to the creation of the ranch in her honor, a healing endeavor turned into a rustic yet refined location. Turning this heartfelt place into an animal paradise inspires Kristin to travel the world and join programs to study different types of animals and release programs. This allows for animals like Puzzles the giraffe, to live their final days on the ranch.

Mid - Eastern States

Music, Food & Fun

(StatePoint) The Bluegrass State is host to dozens of music and arts festivals in every corner of the commonwealth. Whether you’re into country, bluegrass, gospel, rock n’ roll, R&B or something in between, Kentucky has something just for you.

If you find yourself in Danville on the first weekend of June and you hear trumpets, tubas and trombones, don’t be alarmed. Follow the sound and take part in the Great American Brass Band Festival. This unique and free festival celebrates all things brass; from chamber brass ensembles to military marching bands to New Orleans-style brass bands. Once you experience this specialized yet diverse celebration, you will be clearing your schedule for next year’s event.

Railbird is another can’t-miss

event on the first weekend of June. Held in the Red Mile racetrack’s infield in the heart of Lexington since the inaugural fest in 2019, it has grown exponentially every year since. Railbird celebrates all things music, bourbon, horses and Kentucky over the course of two days.

A trip to Henderson is always a good time, but it’s even better if you can make the visit coincide with the WC Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival. The fest celebrates the legacy of one-time Henderson resident and widely noted Godfather of the Blues, W.C. Handy. This three-day celebration of music and cuisine will leave you with a stomach full of barbecue and a head full of 12-bar blues.

ROMP is a celebration of bluegrass music and lifestyle. Taking place in Owensboro every June, not only does this festival bring

in the biggest bluegrass and country acts, but it also features workshops for musicians and songwriters of all skill levels.

The Master Musicians Festival is held every July in Somerset with the goal of celebrating a wide variety of multicultural, multigenerational and multiracial music. For more than 30 years, the MMF lineup has featured local, regional and nationally acclaimed artists from multiple genres such as blues, Haitian roots, rock, jazz, bluegrass and so much more.

For the last three decades the Poppy Mountain Bluegrass Festival has been one of the premier events in Morehead. Every September, dozens of country and bluegrass artists and thousands of fans flock to this eastern Kentucky town to enjoy a weekend of music and culture.

Head For The Water

Looking for the quintessential lake vacation, with plenty of lively aquatic adventures and lots of lazy time? Fun on the water is what it’s all about in Capital City/Lake Murray Country, anchored by Lake Murray and the surrounding towns and counties of Lexington, Newberry, Richland and Saluda. This year-round playground is located off Interstates I-77, I-20 and I-26 in the central part of the Palmetto State.

Connecting the four counties is Lake Murray, “the Jewel of South Carolina,” 41 miles long and encompassing 650 miles of shoreline. Named one of the “top 10 boating destinations and places to live” in the country, it is favored by those who love dockside living, fishing, swimming, boating, sailing, kayaking, picnics, outdoor cookouts and spectacular sunsets. Countless forested coves shelter not only fish, but vacation homes and rentals.

The area has delightful dining spots and watercraft launches are situated all around the lake. Marinas, provisions, boat storage and fishing areas make it perfect for the BYOB (bring your own boat) crowd. You’ll find everything needed to embark on lazy or active days on the water. To discover even more, rely on guides and

captains to steer your group to the top lively party spots or toward the quieter sides of the lake to swim, play and dine.

Those who vacation from mid-June to early August will be treated to a peak experience. An estimated one million Purple Martins arrive on Lake Murray, swooping through the sky at sunset to the delight of lake-goers. Take a boat tour to the middle of the lake near the largest sanctuary in North America.

Fishing aficionados will find plenty of honey holes. Sailing is a peaceful pastime on the lake, and Pilot Cove Ventures is the first and only charter company to offer the experience, along with lessons and more.

Dreher Island State Park is a magical 348-acre spot on Lake Murray with three islands of discovery and adventure between Prosperity and Chapin connected by roadway. Visitors will find picnicking, recreational water activities, nature trails and prized fishing spots favored by tournament anglers. A tackle and gear loaner program is even available.

Tent, primitive and RV camping, camper cabins

and lakeside villas provide great spots to enjoy all the park offers along with endless vistas, sunrises and sunsets. Well-behaved pets are allowed in certain areas and accommodations.

On land, choose between three trails inside the park: Little Gap Trail, Billy Dreher or nature trail and Bicycle Bypass Trail. The first is the most strenuous and meanders through just over two miles of thick pine forest and hardwoods. Keep your eyes peeled for a bald eagle known to nest in this area.

More Shoreside Trails

Get active and explore Capital City/Lake Murray Country’s numerous trails with lots of room for biking and hiking alongside scenic views. One is the pedestrian walkway along the dam to take in largest part of Lake Murray and in the other direction, the downtown Columbia skyline. Explore the many landings and parks around the lake, including Saluda Shoals Park, complete with an Environmental Education Center, trails and boat/kayak launch areas.

Swamp Adventures

between Pine, Black Cypress, Tupelo and Willow Oak trees along blackwater Cedar Creek while an expert reveals its stories.

From mid-May to June, fireflies are found in a handful of U.S. habitats, including this less-traveled national park. Unlike familiar sporadic backyard blinking, thousands of lightning bugs flash and go dark in concert, in a quietly spectacular display. Check the timing and apply to be one of the few to witness this phenomenon. Learn about the ticket lottery at www. nps.gov/cong/fireflies.htm

Outdoor Fun in Columbia

If your visit only allows time for a stay in Columbia, there’s still water adventure for you. It is uniquely situated on three converging rivers, the Saluda, Broad and Congaree, and the city has carefully nurtured parks, greenbelt oases and activity all along the waterfronts. One outfitter offers a popular free, ADA accessible tour; others offer kayaking and tubing on the rivers. Rent a bike to explore any of the Three Rivers Greenways, or hike along the trails at Riverfront Park & Historic Columbia Canal.

For a unique, otherworldly water and land experience, head thirty minutes southeast of Columbia. Congaree National Park is a 26,276-acre water and wilderness ecosystem that preserves the largest tract of old growth bottomland hardwood forest left in the U.S. It’s been given many designations, including a National Natural Landmark, an International Biosphere Reserve and a Globally Important Bird Area in Hopkins.

Hike through the wooded waters on boardwalks or marked paths to view some of the tallest trees in eastern North America. Some of the 25 miles of hiking trails are dog friendly. On land or water, it’s possible to view river otters, alligators, bobcats, deer, owls and wild boar. Guided kayak and canoe day trips, after dark and full moon paddles are offered spring through fall. Meander

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the canal was the world’s first hydroelectrically operated textile mill and is still in operation.

Palmetto Outdoor offers tubing and guided kayak tours on the Lower Saluda River May-September, weather and water levels permitting. On this stretch from just above the Riverbanks Zoo to the Gervais Street Bridge, float under Spanish Moss and through rushing Class II rapids on a three-hour ride. The kayak tours are for experienced whitewater paddlers; in May and June the cherished and protected Rocky Shoals Spider Lily flower clusters can be seen. Stop by the Lake Murray Country Visitors Center in the historic Lorick Plantation House for more information.
