Penrith on virus alert Local restaurants, cafes and retail stores added to long list of exposure sites

Penrith restaurant Tins and Wood closed after a COVID-19 exposure was confirmed.

EMILY FESZCZUK

P

enrith is back on the map with local venues listed as potential COVID-19 exposure sites, as the latest outbreak continues to worsen. This is the first time venues around Penrith have appeared on the alert list since the start of this outbreak, with the number of locally acquired cases in NSW skyrocketing this week. NSW Health data confirms there’s a number of people living in the Penrith Local Government Area (LGA) who have COVID-19, including three in the Emu Plains area and four in St Clair. Possible transmission sites now include Barbeque’s Galore on Mulgoa Road where a person who tested positive with COVID19 attended on Tuesday, July 6 between 2.30pm and 3.45pm. Anyone who attended during this timeframe is considered a close contact and must get tested and isolate for 14 days regardless of the result. Venues in Emu Plains, Jamisontown, Penrith, Kemps Creek and Glenbrook have also been added as they were visited by confirmed cases of COVID-19. Anyone who attended these venues of concern at the certain times are deemed casual contacts and must immediately get tested and isolate until a negative result is received. Café at Lewers in Emu Plains posted on its social media pages that it was “devastated” that a positive COVID-19 case visited the café on July 6, 7, 8 and 9 between 9am to 9.30am. “All staff members rostered on these days have been asked to get tested and self isolate,” the post said. “We ask that guests that visited the site during these times get tested and monitor your health.” Tins and Wood in Penrith is currently closed with a positive COVID case visiting the Italian restaurant on Wednesday, July 7 between 5.20pm and 5.40pm. The restaurant said it will remain closed until all staff and contacts are tested and cleared. On Wednesday, the Sydney lockdown was extended until July 30. T

he owner of a business who fears this lockdown will spell the end of his lifelong dream. The woman who for the first time in her life sought professional help after having thoughts she never expected she would. The bloke who can no longer provide for his family, and is currently burning through his savings. Just three people I’ve spoken to this week who are completely broken by Sydney’s ongoing lockdown. Everyone has a story at the moment. For many of us it’s simple, even a little selfish. Perhaps the gym is closed, you can’t go to the footy or visit your favourite restaurant. For others, it’s a little more stressful – kids who can’t go to school, work being undertaken from home, the four walls beginning to feel like a prison. For the three people at the top of this column, it’s even more serious. And that has always been why New South Wales has taken the sensible approach of trying to avoid lockdowns. The economic and social anguish is huge, something I’m not sure Premiers who open and shut their states like a jackin-a-box really fully comprehend. It’s now evident that this lockdown is required, largely because of the ferocity of the Delta strain, versus any failure in New South Wales’ mantra of trying to keep the State open. Could it have all been handled better? Of course, and we all get to shout that from our lounge rooms and in my case, a keyboard. Hindsight is wonderful and 20/20 as they say, but equally wonderful is preparation, and I can’t help but feel that both

Whether at school, home, the workplace or travelling we all have the right to feel and be safe. the State and Federal Government were woefully unprepared for the possibility of the country’s engine room being shut down. The fact that it took 17 days from when Gladys Berejiklian first announced the lockdown to any real and legitimate support for businesses and individuals to be announced is frightening and wrong. The Federal Government should have long ago worked out a strategy with the states that was implemented as soon as lockdown hit certain milestones. Don’t get me wrong, I’m usually not one to advocate handouts. I’m a strong believer in the harder you work, the more successful and luckier you become. But when a Government implements measures that completely prevent your business from opening, or significantly reduces its income, it must immediately step in to help. Immediately, not 17 days later.

@troydodds

17 days to fend for ourselves Thankfully Tuesday’s announcement will provide much support to many businesses and individuals directly impacted by the lockdown. I can tell you that for 17 long days many felt totally let down by their leaders; almost as if they were told to fend for themselves. It was a significant misstep. Governments aren’t simple things to run, and it’s easy to shout from the sidelines at what should and shouldn’t be done, but when they get the basics wrong, like support for businesses you’ve told to close down or legitimate support for people who can’t pay their rent this week because they’ve had their hours cut overnight, there’s something not right. You build your reputations in the toughest of times, and both the State and Federal Government have bruised theirs in recent weeks. Tuesday’s announcement provided some decent medicine, but I suspect there’s still hits to come. And another thing... Can we move on from this obsession with what shops are essential and what aren’t? Sure, there’s some inconsistencies and sometimes it’s not the greatest look. But a candle shop being open in a shopping centre is not creating super spreading COVID-19 events. There’s barely been a case of transmission in a retail setting post-lockdown (venue alerts do not equal transmission), hence why it’s not the focus of health officials at present. The focus remains on household visits, which have proven this outbreak’s poison.

Rocked by lockdown Income hit: Some of Penrith’s most well-known businesses remain closed EMILY FESZCZUK

usiness owners and their employees have been hit hard once again by the pandemic, with forced closures and extended lockdowns giving them no light at the end of the tunnel. Managing Director of York Jewellers, Doug Ely said having to close their physical store was an extremely hard decision. “It has been the most difficult decision I’ve had to make, but a necessary one for the safety of our staff and customers,” Mr Ely said. “Our store is now temporarily closed for the first time in 47 years due to the ongoing pandemic and evolving retail restrictions.” Mr Ely said with their main source of revenue from the business being stopped, they have had to adapt to still help customers celebrate their special moments. “While our physical store may be closed temporarily, our online store is very much open, with new items being added each week and we are available to take calls during our normal business hours,” he said.

“We are offering Zoom meetings with customers to allow us to be of service to those at home, but I am remaining optimistic that we will be back to full operation soon and will have our full team back working as soon as it is safe to do so.” Chief Executive Officer of Penrith RSL, Neel Chand said while it is having a huge impact on the club, they decided to close when restrictions were first put in place. “We have been completely closed for about three weeks so we are currently having zero income come in,” Mr Chand said. “Doing takeaway was not really a viable option for us with what is involved, and of course with the safety aspect we didn’t want to put anyone at risk so this was the best option for us.” Mr Chand said the Government’s announcement of financial assistance earlier this week for businesses and employees could not have come at a better time. “I think this will go on longer than the end of the month and it is very unfortunate, but all we can do is comply so that we can safely reopen and welcome our members back,” he said.

he NSW and Federal Governments have announced a significant support package for businesses and individuals impacted by Sydney’s COVID-19 lockdown. The package includes an increase to the COVID-19 Disaster Payment to individuals to $600 if a person has lost 20 or more hours of work a week or $375 if a person has lost between eight and less than 20 hours of work a week. A new business support payment will also be available to entities with an annual turnover between $75,000 and $50 million who can demonstrate a 30 per cent decline in turnover. To receive the payment, eligible entities will be required to maintain their full time, part time and long term casual staffing level as of July 13 2021. Eligible entities, which includes notfor-profits, will receive payments of between $1,500 and $10,000 per week based on the level of their payroll. For non-employing businesses, such as sole traders, the payment will be set at $1,000 per week. The 30 per cent revenue test will be based on a comparable period in June or July 2019. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said

as the pandemic evolved so did the responses from the Commonwealth and state governments. “As the outbreak has worsened well beyond what we have recently seen in other states and territories, it is in the national interest to enable increased assistance, in partnership with the NSW Government, for workers, business and households, to ensure the lockdown can be maintained to arrest the latest outbreak,” he said. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the support package would help businesses and families across NSW get through a difficult period. “We are pleased to be able to increase our targeted support in conjunction with the Commonwealth and this assistance will ensure we get through the lockdown and come out stronger on the other side,” she said.

ith COVID-19 spreading around Greater Sydney, feelings of anxiety are increasing, but the pandemic has also ignited a strong sense of community spirit. All around Penrith, there are acts of kindness taking place from businesses and individuals that prove we can survive these trying times if we all just look out for each other. Burger Head is serving up its own style of stimulus during this latest lockdown, with the local restaurant offering nearly $50,000 worth of free cheeseburgers to anyone who signs up as a member via its website or app. “We are in the people business and we believe a community is only as good as the citizens and businesses, so we knew we needed to do something because it was hard seeing so many people suffer,” Co-owner Tim Rosenstrauss said. “100 per cent there will be a couple of unprofitable weeks with the amount of free food being given but we have been around four and a bit years and have had

plenty of support so we wanted to give some of it back.” Inspired by the popular painted rock drop initiative, a Glenmore Park resident has been crotcheting ‘worry worms’ and leaving them around walking tracks in the area for children to find while exercising

so they have a pocket pal to share their worries with. Online community groups are a way for people to connect and Glenmore Park mother, Sarah Sydir reached out to her local one when her son Rohan Kay’s 18th birthday was in jeopardy.

“Rohan was looking forward to having a party with his family but with lockdown he wasn’t able to so he was really upset,” Ms Sydir said. “I popped a post on the Glenmore Park community page saying if anyone happened to be out doing groceries or exercising to swing past and say hi but I still cannot believe the response.” Mr Kay, who has autism was shocked when the community came together to make his birthday special. “So many people came past, there were fancy cars, some dropped off gifts which we couldn’t believe and Regentville Fire Brigade even brought the fire truck past which made Rohan so happy,” Ms Sydir said. “I am so grateful because as a mum I was really sad for him to miss out on this milestone but it turned out better than it could have ever been and really restored our faith in humanity.” On Wednesday, Mexican restaurant Checho’s confirmed it would donate $5 from every order to Cafe at Lewers and Tins and Wood, two hospitality venues that were forced to close after recent COVID-19 exposures.

ne of the state’s leading providers of assistance to those struggling with gambling addiction is re-shaping its services. Gambling Help NSW has undergone a name change and will now be known as GambleAware, including for its service in Penrith. The rebranding aims to reflect the need to help not only gamblers, but also those around them who are impacted as a result. GambleAware Blue Mountains and western Sydney Gambling Counsellor, Jenna Tarudeyataworn said along with the rebranding there is also a restructure of services. “With the previous structure the Office of Responsible Gambling funded all different services, but now NSW has been divided up in to 10 different regions which follow the health districts,” Ms Tarudeyataworn said. “GambleAware is now focused on providing treatment services for those who need it, as well as educating and supporting those being affected and harmed as well.” With the new name being the first stage, further changes will occur as the service evolves to provide a more holistic approach to support. “For existing people in the system getting help it should be a smooth transition, but we also encourage people

who want help stopping or even just tips controlling their gambling to reach out,” she said. “The stepped care mode we follow can cater in different ways from self help via online reading or talking to a counsellor over the phone or in person, and if someone has other issues we can refer them to another service that deals with that.” During lockdown people who struggle with gambling may think they do not have an issue, but Ms Tarudeyataworn said people can be impacted quickly once establishments reopen. “My colleagues and I encountered similar stories where people felt positive and optimistic when venues were closed and felt really good when they weren’t gambling,” she said. “As soon as venues opened though after the lockdown last year they felt this call back and statistics show they gambled even more than before.” She also encourages those around gamblers to engage with the services to better support themselves and the person in their life who has a problem with gambling. “There is a statistic that for every gambler, five to 10 people are being affected so even if you can’t get the person who is having issues to attend the counselling it could help to talk to understand what they are going through,” she said. If you or someone you know is struggling with gambling, visit www. gambleaware.nsw.gov.au.

Awesome Ash: Does Australia have a better sporting personality than Ash Barty? Her Wimbledon triumph last week, and more importantly the way she reacted and handled the success, is something we can all be proud of. Finally a tennis player Australia can get behind, and one that doesn’t need to act like a spoilt brat to get attention. Well done, Ash!

Facebook loonies: While everyone has the right to choose what happens to their own body, we can’t help but feel those against the COVID-19 vaccination (and spreading their thoughts far and wide) have done very little research to back-up their beliefs. If you’re legitimately concerned, speak to someone with a medical or science degree, not a Facebook account.

Footy saviours: Well done to the NRL, who for the second year in a row have risen above enormous challenges to keep the season going.

New dates for Vivid Sydney

T

he State Government has announced Vivid Sydney will be rescheduled to September 17 until October 9 in the interest of community health and safety. Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism, and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said NSW must work together to contain the current outbreak of COVID-19 to allow the State to stride into recovery. “We all want to see Sydney shine through the spectacular show of creativity and innovation that is Vivid Sydney in September and October this year,” Mr Ayres said. “The recent outbreak has presented a new challenge for everyone, and the health and safety of our citizens and entire event community involved in Vivid Sydney is our foremost concern.” Mr Ayres said he was hopeful that the

event would go ahead on the new dates, with discussions to continue with health authorities. “Destination NSW will continue to work with NSW Health and other agencies to deliver a COVID-safe Vivid Sydney later this year, with support from our event partners, artists, sponsors, and suppliers,” he said. “Vivid Sydney will only proceed if it’s safe to do so.” Full details of the revised Vivid Sydney 2021 program will be available online in the coming weeks as venues and event owners finalise logistics. Ticketholders will be able to transfer their ticket to the new event date or request a refund via the relevant ticket agent. For further information about the event, go to www.vividsydney.com.

he late Garry Rumble will be recognised for his dedication to the community with a South Penrith playground named in his honour. The playground at Pioneer Park on Robyn Avenue will now be known as the Garry Rumble Playground after Councillors endorsed the new name last month. Garth Lindsay Rumble (commonly known as Garry Rumble) made a significant contribution to the Penrith Local Government Area for nearly four decades, particularly while employed at Penrith Council, as a South Ward Councillor and through his voluntary work with charitable organisations. During Council’s Ordinary Meeting last month, Councillors expressed their gratitude for Mr Rumble, who passed away on April 15 last year. “Unfortunately Garry passed away way too young and he’s a fellow who’s got his fingerprints on a lot of what has happened in Penrith, previously and now,” Councillor Jim Aitken said. Councillor Mark Davies described him as a “phenomenal member of the community”, while Councillor Kevin Crameri praised his many charitable pursuits. “Having known Garry since I got into Council in ‘74, he was a wonderful

person who has always had his heart in the community,” Cr Crameri said. “I found him a great person and I really appreciate that we are doing something.” Joining Council as District Health Surveyor in 1970, Mr Rumble led the introduction of ‘wheelie’ bins, oversaw the development of the organisation’s first computer system to track development applications, and the installation of a floating weir on the Nepean River. An Order of Australia Medal recipient, Mr Rumble held the position of Local Emergency Management Officer from 1989 and represented Council on the Flood Mitigation Management Authority of NSW. He was the Chief Warden for the Civic Centre from the time of its opening in 1994 until his retirement, and after his retirement from Council, was elected and served as South Ward Councillor from 2004-2008. He was also heavily involved in local Rotary and Probus clubs and was part of the committee which championed the relocation of the Penrith Museum of Fire to its current location, serving as the Museum’s Chairman from 2001 until 2018. Mr Rumble was also a member of the Olympic Torch Relay and Paralympics Games committee from 1998 to 2000. A sandstone memorial and plaque will be installed adjacent to the existing playground within the reserve.

he Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) is campaigning for casual workers in Penrith who work on a regular basis to be entitled to pathways to permanent employment. This comes as the Fair Work Amendment (Supporting Australia’s Jobs and Economic Recovery) Act made significant reforms to the Fair Work Act 2009 earlier this year. CPSU Deputy National Secretary, Beth Vincent-Pietsch said an over casualisation in the workforce has been revealed and needs to be altered. “The new parts of the Fair Work Act gives employers obligations where they have to do an audit of their casual workers,” Ms Vincent-Pietsch said. “If they have casuals who have worked longer than 12 months and do a regular pattern of hours then they have to provide some pathways to permanency but parts of the public sector seem to get out of this one.” The CPSU is in discussions with some agencies, including the Australian Taxa-

tion Office (ATO), that has an estimated 200 casual workers at its Penrith office. “We know that casuals desperately want ongoing work, COVID has really exposed how much people want job security and are looking for stability and the leave

that casuals don’t get. About a quarter of the staff at the Penrith ATO are casual, at the bottom of the pay scale and want ongoing positions, so we are encouraging the ATO to do the audit but take the extra step and look at what they can do to give these people permanent employment,” she said. An ATO employee, who cannot be identified for privacy reasons, said it is an ongoing struggle to be a casual. “Across the last 10 years it has been really difficult because you don’t have security from one day to the next with your shifts,” the employee said. “You can get allocated shifts but they can always be taken off you or cut short at any time.” An ATO spokesperson said its casual staff play a critical role in assisting to manage peaks and troughs in community demand for its services. “The ATO’s use of casual workers reflects the work pattern and attendance required of different roles. As business needs change we regularly review the classification and employment arrangements of positions and make adjustments as required,” the spokesperson said.

Life starts at Thornton Park

“A spacious home and a social life? It’s everything I need.” – Marilyn, Resident

iss o m t ’ Don

When Marilyn moved to Thornton Park, she was amazed by the size of the apartments, but it’s the community that’s really turned the village into her home sweet home. “I knew I’d made the right decision to move into Thornton Park when I realised the furniture from my four-bedroom home fitted into my new apartment. It’s so spacious here, it’s like the place was made for me. Before the move, I was so bored at home, because there was no one around. At Thornton Park, there’s always someone to chat to. The village is central to everything, so you always feel safe and secure. It’s nice not having to worry about anything from day-to-day. The friends I’ve made since moving in have been integral to that sense of feeling at home, though I’ve felt comfortable here since day one. We have little Friday night get-togethers, because we genuinely enjoy each other’s company. Having a glass of wine with the neighbours is something I look forward to. There are often planned activities in the village but I don’t always get involved. I like the way there’s never any pressure, you just do your own thing. If you’ve ever thought about retirement living, don’t hesitate to contact us for an information pack and to book your obligation-free tour. It just might be the best thing you ever do.

St Marys: Woman charged after police witness drug transaction A woman has been charged after supplying prohibited drugs in St Marys last week. About 10.50am on Wednesday, July 7, police were patrolling West Lane, St Marys when they sighted what they thought to be a drug transaction. They approached the vehicle and had a conversation with the driver, a 57-year-old St Marys woman. The woman was asked to exit the driver’s seat and at this stage the officers could smell a strong odour of cannabis. Police questioned the woman and it is alleged she removed a re-sealable plastic bag containing cannabis from her bra. She was then arrested and when police searched her handbag, they allegedly located two tablets of endone, and a re-sealable bag containing a white powder, alleged to be heroin. The woman’s car was then searched and methadone and methylamphetamines were allegedly located. She was charged and will appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, August 5.

Emu Plains: Man arrested after hiding in bedroom of house

A disqualified rider has been charged after carrying a knife and prohibited drugs in Emu Plains. About 2.10pm on Friday, July 9, Polair sighted a trail bike being ridden on Dunheved Road, Werrington. The rider travelled to Coreen Avenue, Penrith, then to the Great Western Highway, Emu Plains, before riding through the car park of a local fast food restaurant and onto Russell Street, Emu Plains. Eventually the rider entered the backyard of a residential premises on the Great Western Highway, Emu Plains and police on the ground attended and arrested a 37-year-old Rooty Hill man hiding in the main bedroom. Checks on the man’s licence revealed he is disqualified from driving until February 2028. The man was searched, and police alleg-

with Daniel McKinnon edly found a small pocket knife and a plastic container with what is believed to be cannabis in a backpack he was carrying. The man was charged and bail refused to appear at Penrith Local Court on Thursday, July 15.

Penrith: Police launch appeal for information following assault Police are appealing for public assistance about the stabbing and serious assault of a teen in Penrith earlier this year. About 11.50pm on Saturday, May 1, emergency services responded to reports of a brawl in a car park on Mulgoa Road, near the intersection of Jamison Road, Penrith. Upon arrival, officers from Nepean Police Area Command found a 16-yearold boy who was taken to the Westmead Hospital with a lacerated liver, facial fractures and lacerations. The teenager was later released but as inquiries continue, police are looking to speak to a man and woman they believe may be able to assist with their investigations. The man was seen wearing a grey hooded jumper, black pants or jeans, white shoes and was believed to be holding a baseball bat. The woman was wearing a black skirt or shorts and a white top. A white 4WD utility was also seen with a flat back silver tray, and a black snorkel, black mag wheels, black door handles and a black stripe on the side. The first two characters of the vehicle’s registration are 1Q. Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or has CCTV or dashcam footage, or information about the vehicle, to contact Nepean Detectives or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Masks required in offices as part of COVID-19 response People attending offices are reminded that masks must be worn indoors, including by employees of the business. Police have been conducting random checks to ensure compliance.

WHEN CONTRACTS GET VERY MESSY Not all contracts are in writing, and quite often verbal promises are enforceable – especially when it comes to family arrangements with respect to things like the succession of property. The most common context in which this arises is between parents and children. For example, lets assume two parents live together on their five acre property on the outskirts of Sydney with their only son who has just turned 18. One night the son says, “Now that I have a job of my own and I am an adult it is time for me to spread my wings. The bank said they will give me a loan to help me buy a unit. I’m going to move out”. Mum and dad say, “As you know, we live on a big property here and we aren’t getting any younger. We think it’s a great idea that you have your own place, but this property is going to be yours one day anyway. Why don’t you go to the bank and get that loan, but build a house here on the property with us. When we die we are going to leave everything to you in our Will anyway, so the money you spend building a house won’t be wasted. All we ask in return is that you stay here and help us out maintaining the place and one day the keys to the kingdom will be yours”. The son spends some time thinking about his parents’ proposition and before you know it they all agree and construction of the new house is underway. No-one makes any written notes about the agreement… “after all, we are family, what could possibly go wrong?” they say. One day tragedy strikes and Mum passes away suddenly. Over the next few years Mum’s death takes its toll on father and son. The two men maintain a cordial relationship, but often bicker and sometimes go a couple of weeks without speaking to each other. One day the son comes home to find a

for sale sign at the front of the property. He immediately walks up to the main house and says to his father, “What is happening? Why is there a for sale sign out the front?”. His father replies, “This property is too big for me to maintain. You are always working and never help me anymore. We barely talk. I’m selling the place”. Scenarios just like this one are all too common, albeit very sad. But all hope is not lost for the son. Whilst it is regretful that his father is taking the decision to sell the property and not acknowledge his son’s contribution over the years, the son may have the following causes of action available to him: 1. An action in equity, asserting that his father holds part of the property on trust for him, known as a constructive or resulting trust or equitable proprietary interest, arising out of the fact that both parents promised the son that if he stayed on the property and helped them maintain it, it would be his one day. 2. An action in estoppel, because the son has relied on the representations made by his parents that the property would be his one day, to his detriment in constructing a house and expending money on a property that he does not own. 3. An equitable interest in the property arising out of contributions e.g. the construction of a house and new deck which has improved the value of the property at the son’s expense. These types of matters are very complicated. Depending on the circumstances of the case, sometimes a claimant will only be entitled to money. Other times they may be entitled to be designated as an owner of the property. If you find yourself in a situation like this, you need expert legal advice.

Δ Remember that storm that erupted a few weeks ago with suggestions that Liberal Councillor Mark Davies was set to challenge sitting Federal MP Melissa McIntosh at the Lindsay preselection? I’m told the challenge is off and Ms McIntosh will have a clear run to contest the next election.

Δ The vast majority of school students may be learning from home at the moment, but that doesn’t mean school zones have been suspended. Several readers noted that the flashing lights at school zones were back on this week, and the State Government has confirmed that 40km/h zones are back in action despite most students not attending school.

Δ One of the longest running tourism businesses in Australia’s first tourist destination, the internationally recognised Blue Mountains Explorer Bus fleet, is the latest business victim of COVID-19 and has been parked indefinitely. A red double-decker hop-on/hop-off sightseeing bus has already been sold, with another five on the market. The fleet is not sustainable without international visitors, and domestic tour and coach company Fantastic Aussie Tours (FAT) which owns them, cannot afford to maintain the fleet without government help. Let’s hope they can somehow get back on the road one day in the future.

Great River Walk to be expanded ALENA HIGGINS

P

lans for the first phase of the Great River Walk extension are gaining momentum, with an application submitted to the Department of Planning. The Great River Walk extension is part of a 1.625-kilometre network of cycling and walking trails to be established under a plan for green open space on 2.2 hectares of land gifted to the community as part of the Nepean Business Park project. The Development Application (DA) proposes a 320-metre extension northwest beginning at the Park’s site boundary near Cassola Place, Penrith and allows for the future extension into the Sydney International Regatta Centre and Penrith Lakes parklands. Nepean Business Park Chair Bruce Baudinet said the extension will enhance the green space at the Park by providing recreational benefits for walkers, runners and cyclists. “Today we are one step closer to the extension of the Great River Walk along the Nepean River,” he said. “The documents lodged with the Depart-

ment of Planning, Industry and Environment provide the Penrith community with the first glimpse of what this means for the Great River Walk. “While the Nepean Business Park has rightly attracted immense community support for the economic, jobs and investment stimulus for western Sydney, the environment benefits of the project are just as significant.” The site already contains an existing informal track which means there is no requirement to clear any trees to implement the proposed three-metre-wide shared path. According to the Statement of Environmental Effects attached to the DA, the Masterplan for Penrith Lakes identifies a continuous shared path (pedestrian and cycle) through the Penrith Lakes area, with loop paths at various locations to the river’s edge. The extension will also bolster the Great West Walk (GWW) – a regional trail that creates an east-west pedestrian link from Parramatta to the base of the Blue Mountains at Blaxland. “As the GWW runs along Leland Street, Cassola Place, and shares the Great River Walk along the Nepean, the Nepean Busi-

ness Park site is well placed to join into this broader link, through existing and proposed connections,” the Statement of Environmental Effects shows. The $613 million Nepean Business Park

project, currently in land rehabilitation stage, will transform the abandoned quarry into a hi-tech, green-friendly SME hub and provide 4,000 permanent jobs on site.

fter 32 years serving as a fire fighter for Fire and Rescue NSW, 6918 Station Officer Philip Nightingale has recently retired. The Glenmore Park resident spent 23 years of his career serving the local community, while stationed at St Marys, Penrith and Regentville Fire Stations. The 66-year-old said he has always been extremely proud to be a serving member of the community. “I had always been interested in joining the Fire Brigade since I was about 20 years of age, I had a few mates that had already joined, so I started to apply in 1986 and finally got the job in 1989,” Mr Nightingale said. “It is a tremendous and rewarding job, being able to help people when they are in difficult and stressful situations, along with the mateship amongst fellow fire fighters.” Despite being a demanding job, Mr Nightingale said he will miss it but looks forward to spending more time with his family during retirement. “Seeing people having the worst day of their lives and not being able to rectify the horrible situation they face was the most difficult part,” he said. “Besides the obvious job satisfaction, I

New eateries set to open in growing Thornton estate ALENA HIGGINS

T

he Thornton community could welcome a new coffee house and restaurant with a Development Application recently lodged with Penrith Council. A vacant ground floor commercial tenancy at 26 Lord Sheffield Circuit has been slated for the food and drink premises, which the Weekender understands will be known as ‘Hungry Sheffield’ and ‘Thornton Coffee House’. It will be a welcome addition to the new estate, which is currently serviced by one cafe across from the train station. “There will be two offerings, one which is going to be a cafe serving boutique coffee, sandwiches and pastries, and then the other one will be a kebab shop serving pizzas, kebabs and other Mediterranean food,” Paul Marji, a designer behind the project said. The proposal includes indoor seating and seeks to trade from 6am to 10pm seven days per week. Meanwhile, another exciting Thornton cafe, Profiterole Patisserie, is expected to

open next month. Franchisee, Lucky Ghuman, confirmed the fit-out of the French-inspired patisserie located at 91 Lord Sheffield Circuit

was continuing and would hopefully open in late August. “People can dine in and takeaway, we have all sorts of patisserie cakes, French-

style, plus we have sweets, desserts and lunch and breakfast, coffee, cocktails, ice cream cocktails, and mocktails,” he said. Mr Ghuman, who lives in Jordan Springs, said the shop will fill a gap in the local market and provide Penrith residents with greater choice for special occasions. “We don’t have anything in the west, we don’t have much patisseries and cakes, you have to go to Woolworths and places like that,” he said. “We will be open 6am in the morning to 10.30pm at night, so customers will have a lot of hours to buy cakes.” Originally established in Guildford in 2003, Profiterole Patisserie will soon boast four locations across Sydney. Other service offerings are expected to pop up across the estate as more vacant commercial tenancies at the base of the high rise buildings along Lord Sheffield Circuit are filled. Located adjacent to Penrith Train Station, the area has undergone a dramatic transformation since UrbanGrowth NSW acquired the land from the Commonwealth Department of Defence in 2012 and completed the re-zoning and concept plan.

Council and the community’s vision for Regatta Park as a dynamic space that celebrates, activates, and enhances the Nepean River is closer to being realised with remediation work for the $24 million upgrade of Regatta Park now underway. Construction is taking place in stages with the first stage to deliver a 112-metre pavilion with undercover playground and water features and a new amenity building requiring the permanent closure of the eastern car park and the riverbank at Regatta Park. The car park on the western side of River Road at Regatta Park remains open for Nepean River visitors and anyone enjoying walking, riding or running along the Great River Walk. There is also parking on the other side of the river along Tench Avenue, and in the Emu Plains commuter car park on weekends. A new car park is a key feature in the transformation of Regatta Park and when complete this car park will increase the number of car spaces in the centralised car park, overflow car park and on-street parking. Other key features of the upgrade include two new play spaces, an acces-

sible pathway to the river foreshore, over-water viewing platforms, junior cricket oval, functional car park, more trees for natural shade and green open space areas. The Regatta Park upgrade is being jointly funded with $9 million contributed from Penrith City Council and $15 million from the Australian and NSW Governments through the Western Sydney City Deal’s Western Parkland City Liveability Program. Key milestones for the project include the start of construction in July 2021; the delivery of accessible paths along the foreshore in November 2021 with the project set to be complete in December 2022. I’d like to thank our community for their patience and understanding as we commence work to transform Regatta Park and build a vibrant, green space with improved access and useability of this spectacular location for current and future residents. rom Auckland to the Central Coast, and now Queensland. I’m not sure a single NRL game has been shifted to such vast alternates in the game’s history, yet here we are – the Warriors and the Panthers at Suncorp Stadium, of all places. The disruption of the past week will no doubt impact all of the 12 clubs relocated to Queensland, but players have become used to such inconveniences, and this is simply another hurdle. For the Warriors, it is nothing new – they’ve spent the last two seasons in a world of uncertainty. For Sunshine Coast-based Penrith, the disruption means little when you consider what is at stake. It’s perhaps the teams not in the mix for a Finals finish who will do it the toughest.

SUNDAY, JULY 18 | 1.50PM | SUNCORP STADIUM | REFEREE: CHRIS BUTLER But let’s focus on this Sunday afternoon’s early game and exactly what it means for the Panthers and Warriors. For Penrith, it’s yet another test for the Matt Burton / Tyrone May halves combination, steering the ship for an injured Jarome Luai and Nathan Cleary, both still a few weeks away from returning. Crucially, a win here would almost certainly lock up a top four finish and keep Ivan Cleary’s side in a position to claim their second consecutive Minor Premiership. For the Warriors, this really is do or die. Nathan Brown’s side is four points out of the top eight and another loss would mean the word ‘mathematically’ starts to get a run. Very rarely does that equation work out. This Warriors side just can’t seem to produce a complete performance at

present. They show signs of what they’re capable off, but it rarely extends to an 80 minute effort. The Warriors would rate themselves a decent shot this weekend against a Penrith side without Luai and Cleary, and with a host of other players backing up from Wednesday night’s State of Origin. We saw in matches against the Sharks and Tigers earlier this year that the Panthers have struggled without their natural halves combination, but with more time and preparation perhaps things will start to click more. Regardless of what’s going on the halves, for me this is a game that’ll be won up front. Solid performances from James FisherHarris and Moses Leota should be able to get the Panthers the dominant field posi-

tion they’ll require to control the flow of the game. The Panthers currently lead the competition in All Run Metres, All Runs and Kick Return Metres, proving that once they get a roll-on, they’re very difficult to stop. The Warriors will put up a fight, no doubt, and like in most of their matches they’ll probably manage to put a scare through the opposition at some stage, but calm heads should prevail if the Panthers stick to the game plan. Shutting down Reece Walsh and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck will be a key. I’m expecting a tough opening 20 minutes, but Penrith should do enough in the latter stages of the first half to set up an ultimately dominant victory. Tip: Panthers by 16.

WITH THE MASKED PANTHER

SUNNY COAST PANTHERS ! The Penrith Panthers will call the Sunshine Coast home for at least the next month after relocating from Sydney’s west to Queensland earlier this week. The Panthers will join the Knights, Roosters and Sea Eagles at their Novotel Twin Waters base, with home games to be played out of Sunshine Coast Stadium. So far, the only future home game impacted by the COVID-forced relocation is the clash against Brisbane, originally scheduled for BlueBet Stadium on Saturday, July 24. But the reality is that the NRL expects clubs to be based in Queensland longer than the initial four week stint, with fears it could extend until the end of the season. At this stage the Panthers are hopeful of being back home for their big clashes against Souths and Wests Tigers to end the regular season, but it’s anyone’s guess at present. ! While the players and critical staff headed to the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday, family members and other staff aren’t due to fly up until tomorrow. They’ll then undertake a quarantine period before they’re free to live under whatever restrictions are in place in Queensland at the time in question. ! There was some doubt about James Fisher-Harris flying to Queensland on Wednesday given his wife is heavily pregnant. However, the recently re-signed forward made the trip and is due to play against the Warriors on Sunday. ! Centre Paul Momirovski has taken it upon himself to provide plenty of advice about what players needed to pack for the Sunshine Coast venture. “We are lucky enough to have Paul Momirovski give us a few tips after being with the Storm crew last year,” forward Scott Sorensen said. “He gave us a rundown of what’s essential and what isn’t. He said you don’t need to pack a month of deodorants, just be smart about it. Bring what you need for two weeks and you’ve got Woolworths and Coles to deliver to you up there. Just be smart about what you’re going to throw in your bag, just little things like that.” !

The NRL could be headed for a

showdown with the State Government if the COVID crisis continues into September and October. The Grand Final is scheduled to be played at Stadium Australia on Sunday, October 3 and the NRL has a contract with the NSW Government to play the season decider in the Harbour City until at least 2046. But the NRL doesn’t want to play the Grand Final in front of an empty stadium and would equally be unhappy about the prospect of a reduced crowd, particularly given there’s a good chance two Sydney clubs could be involved. That latter point is where the drama could come in – the State Government would likely push for the game to go ahead in Sydney even if it had reduced capacity restrictions. In that case, the NRL would want to open the game up to the highest bidder with Melbourne’s MCG a real possibility. It’s far too early to be having any firm discussions at this point, but it’s certainly on the NRL’s radar.

holders, let alone Members. Adding to the problem is that the Panthers Leagues Club remains closed and is earning no revenue. The club estimates it would have lost $500,000 alone on the night the Eels match had to be played behind closed doors. NRL CEO Andrew Abdo has promised that clubs will be “looked after” during this period, but no specifics have been conveyed at this stage.

! The relocation to Queensland is having a huge impact on Penrith’s bank balance. While the NRL is funding the move, the reality is the club is facing a huge headache given it can’t meet commitments to many sponsors and corporate ticket

! How good was it to see Panthers hooker Api Koroisau make his State of Origin debut on Wednesday night? Koroisau is still one of the most under-rated players in the game but is a key reason the Panthers can keep winning over the next few weeks

even without Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai. He’s a true game changer and sets the agenda for the flow of the match. Looking great in blue, Api!

! It’s been a long time between Tweets for Panthers CEO Brian Fletcher. He was last active on Twitter back on August 6, 2016 when he retweeted news of Sam McKendry becoming a first-time Dad. But almost five years later, he’s back – Tweeting last Friday: “The great tip-off”. We presume it may have been a reference to the NBA Finals. ! A big happy birthday to Panthers centre Paul Momirovski, who turned 25 on Tuesday.

P

anthers players will view their upcoming one-month stint on the Sunshine Coast as a business trip, determined to not let the sun and the surf distract them from the ultimate prize of winning an NRL Premiership. On Wednesday, the entire Panthers playing squad as well as coaches and essential staff swapped the state-of-the-art Panthers Academy for a beautiful four-star resort in Maroochydore – their new home away from home for at least the next four weeks while Greater Sydney battles a severe COVID outbreak. While moving away from the comforts of home isn’t ideal during a Premiership campaign, players are pledging to embrace the circumstances they’ve been dealt and march on. “We just all want to do our part and keep the game alive,” recently re-signed prop James Fisher-Harris told the media on Tuesday. “We’re just taking it one day a time right now. The boys are keen to play, and we don’t want to stop doing what we’re doing. By any means, we’re keen to do whatever it takes.”

Fellow Penrith forward Scott Sorensen said there were plenty of “mixed emotions” among the playing group about leaving Sydney for an extended period. “It’s all happened so fast but we’re very grateful and fortunate that the NRL’s been able to put this all together,” he said. “As players, it’s exciting but, at the same time, we’re a little bit nervous to see how things will go. We’re just going to embrace it and hopefully it can all go ahead and things go according to plan.” During their lengthy stay up north, most players will also be joined by their partners and children, with both the NRL and Queensland Government determined to reunite players with their families in due course. Fisher-Harris and Sorensen both have young children, with the latter confirming his partner Elle and son Hudson will be making the trip up to the Sunshine State as soon as possible. “I’m very lucky my partner is very supportive and she wouldn’t miss going up there for the world,” Sorensen said. “We understand it’s not as easy for everybody… we just have the one child, but I know everyone’s got different circumstances with children, work and study, so I’m very fortunate my partner is so supportive and is able to do so.”

While there is plenty going on behindthe-scenes at Panthers HQ, there is still a game to be played this Sunday afternoon against the New Zealand Warriors. “I think it will work in our favour having

more time to gel and work together, have more camaraderie and we’ll get to know each other even more,” Sorensen said. “I think everyone is on board with that and everyone wants to improve and get better.”

The under-rated players who lifted the Panthers

lang on league H

e’s the type of player every team needs, some teams have and every team wants. The player that makes his tackles, does his runs and tries his heart out every week without necessarily getting the accolades he deserves. He’s the player the coach can’t do without. He’s the under-rated player in the team. His true value is known by his teammates and by club supporters. I’m not saying this player has no public profile or the media doesn’t know him, he’s just not always the first one interviewed. My team of Most Under-rated Panthers players of the last 40 years consists of 16 players who played 50 games or more of first grade with only Matt Rodwell playing less at 44 games. 1. Dylan Edwards (2016 – present) 2. Paul Smith (1987 – 1993) 3. Col Bentley (1986-1992, 1995) 4. Sid Domic (1997-2001) 5. David Simmons (2010-15) 6. Darren Brown (1994-98) 7. Matthew Rodwell (2000-2001) 8. Carl MacNamara (1991-2001) 9. Brett Boyd (1992-98) 10. Steve Waddell (1988-1991, 1995-1997) 11. Phil Adamson (1993-98) 12. Barry Walker (1988-1996) 13. Lee Hopkins (1997-2002) Interchange: 14. Danny Farrar (1992-97), 15. Matthew Bell (2006-2011), 16. Jeremy Latimore (2013-16) 17. Jody Gall (1994-98,

in his time with the Panthers including lock, second-row, five-eighth and even halfback. Matt Rodwell kept Craig Gower in the hooking spot and led the Panthers to the Finals in 2000 while Carl MacNamara and Steve Waddell were as tough and durable as any prop in their day. Brett Boyd at hooker was solid as a rock after Royce Simmons retired while Phil Adamson and Barry Walker had a bit of profile but not as high as it should have been. Finally, Lee Hopkins tackled everything that moved and the bench, well it speaks for itself. Over to you peeps! What caught my eye last week: The great post-try celebration by the Sharks’ Braden Hamlin-Uele who impersonated WWE’s The Rock ‘People’s Elbow’ finishing move. My Tips for the week: Eels, Sea Eagles, Raiders, Roosters, Storm, Panthers, Broncos, Rabbitohs.

David Simmons was one of Penrith’s most under-rated players. Photo: NRL Photos.

2000-02). 18th man: Chris Hicks (19972002). Of the current crop of players I think Dylan Edwards is the most under-rated. His value to the team is best seen when he’s not in it.

Wingers Paul Smith and David Simmons were as safe as any player while Col Bentley and Sid Domic were often overshadowed by their other centre partners. Darren Brown played so many positions

The final word: The tremendous work being done not only by the NRL hierarchy but by the 16 clubs including coaches, players and training staff who are all moving heaven and earth to keep the competition going is extraordinary. A shout-out also has to go to all the families of the players, who will have to go into two weeks of lockdown before being able to see their loved ones.

TO THE 99 PER CENT, I SAY A HUGE, GRATEFUL THANK YOU

W

hen Jason Ryles won the Dragons Medal at a glittering St George-Illawarra presentation night in 2001 he granted a raw emotional interview afterwords. It was great stuff from a passionate rugby league man. Sadly, it never saw the light of day. A few minutes after we’d left the function two planes flew into the World Trade Centre in New York. Footy – in fact all sport – seemed hopelessly irrelevant for weeks. It was similar when covering men throwing balls through a hoop while parts of Australia were being devastated by bushfires. It seemed a little insignificant. Again now, as parts of Australia are in ‘Covid Lockdown’ – with all the associated fear and suffering – sometimes it’s hard to focus on sport. Yet at the same time its importance is underlined by the amount of people who say; “Thank god I can still look forward to the footy.” It’s a stark reminder how such distractions can be an important solace when life is mentally challenging. It also helps those in the game re-apply their focus.

It was the case this week as the 11am NSW Government media conference was at least offset by State of Origin, or the Boomers beating the US, or the midweek rugby Tests… and soon the Olympics. Then there’s the NRL which will continue, based largely out of South East Queensland. We are quick to rip-in to the boofheads who break the bubble. What about all those who don’t! The 99 per cent of players and staff who make sure the game keeps going. Before you say it’s easy, think about the young men expecting babies soon, or the partners who are locked into work/ training, or those who also care for sick/ elderly family members, or those with children needing special requirements, or the myriad of other scenarios. Yes, the players are lucky to have well paid work but realise there is significant sacrifice as well. All so the game can go on. All so the dollars continue to flow. All so we can plonk ourselves in front of Fox League and distract ourselves from the drama that is the winter of 2021. On behalf of anyone who ‘escapes’ with a game of footy here or there, I say thank you.

A

t some stage this year the NRL are expected to announce the addition of a 17th franchise in 2023. It’s almost certain it’ll be in Brisbane, with bids coming from the Brisbane Firehawks, Brisbane Jets and Redcliffe Dolphins as they all vie to become Queensland’s fourth club. The topic of expansion is clearly on the NRL’s agenda, and with plenty of time to think during lockdown, it got me pondering what the best move for the competition is. While stuck at home like everyone else, I’ve gotten stuck into the Netflix series ‘Sunderland ’Til I Die’, which is a series that follows the English football club Sunderland AFC. My boys started to get keen on the show too, and with Sunderland in battles for promotion and relegation, it had me thinking if that would be a model the NRL could follow. Looking at the current strength of the competition, and the fact that there’s such a big gap between the best five or six teams compared to the rest of the league . . . I don’t know why we don’t do it. Simply put, we don’t have enough players at first-grade level, and I think we should be reducing the amount of teams

in the top tier to keep the competition healthy and the standard high. A hypothetical situation I’d consider is giving teams three or four years to prepare for the introduction of a 14-team league – that would give everyone time to prepare knowing what was at stake if they had a poor season come 2024 or 2025. While that hurts some clubs in the short term, all of the sudden we’d have a strong tier two, made up of sides like the Dolphins and North Sydney Bears – who want to make their way into the NRL. If they are truly up to the standard, they can prove it with being one of the best sides in the second-tier comp and come up to NRL level. As the resident round-ball expert at SEN, Simon Hill believes that relegation and promotion actually helps clubs become better. Front offices are kept honest, and there’s no complacency knowing they’ll remain in the top leagues like we often see in the NRL. It’d be a radical change, but something I’d seriously consider if I were in Peter V’landys’ shoes. We should always be thinking about what makes our product better, and simply put, I think this does.

MUSIC WILL HELP US BREATHE AGAIN EMILY FESZCZUK nce lockdown is over there will be nothing better than getting together to share some laughs and stories. Australian country star Kasey Chambers will be adding music to that mix as she joins blues and folk duo Busby Marou for a special concert tour. Hoping to bring ‘The Spring’ tour to the Sydney Coliseum in September, Kasey said it felt natural to do a series of shows with Tom Busby and Jeremy Marou. “We have been wanting to get out on the road and we have been mates for a long

O

time so we felt it was a pretty good match to not only bring our musical connection but our friendship as well,” Kasey told the Weekender. “We love playing to audiences but we also just love jamming at home so wanted to share that with as many people as we can while signing songs about our travels and experiences.” With the sets to be relaxed and carefree, Kasey said it will be a unique experience compared to other concerts. “We wouldn’t know how to follow a strict set list even if we had to but we are looking forward to playing our own songs with our bands,” she said. “It will then be extra special when we

collaborate together on songs like we are singing around a campfire, which is something you would not normally be able to see.” With many musicians turning to social media and websites to connect with fans during lockdowns, Jeremy said the artists much prefer a physical connection with live music, and to feel the presence of the audience. “We are lucky that Queensland has not been hit as hard with COVID compared to New South Wales and Victoria but I would much prefer to wait to perform live,” Jeremy said. “When you are in front of a camera you don’t get to feed off the audience, with be-

ing live you see them react with emotion in their face and you hear them sing along when they are enjoying a song.” Kasey said playing live gives all her old songs like ‘The Captain’, ‘Not Pretty Enough’ and Barricades and Brickwalls’ a new life on stage. It is guaranteed to be a night that will bring together great friends who just happen to write incredible songs and love to share a story. Kasey Chambers and Busby Marou will be on at Sydney Coliseum Theatre in Rooty Hill on Friday, September 24 at 7.30pm. Tickets are from $79. To book or for more information call 9851 5912 or visit sydneycoliseum.com.au.

At the movies... PREVIEW Encanto Run time: TBA A new trailer, poster and images are now available introducing audiences to Walt Disney Animation Studios’ ‘Encanto’, the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The all-new original film features the voice of Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel, an ordinary 15-year-old who’s struggling to find her place in her family. “Mirabel is a really funny, loving character who also deeply yearns for something more,” Ms Beatriz said. “She’s also not afraid to stand up for what she knows is right – something I love and relate to very much. “I’m Colombian on my father’s side, and

playing this role fills me with immense pride. As a Disney kid, I’d burn through my VHS tapes and adored every single magical story that the world of Disney introduced me to. I learned in those that stories that anything is possible, especially if you believe in magic and the goodness rooted deep inside us all.” In the film, the magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal – every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope. The voice cast also includes María

Rebooted tween series ‘iCarly’ will stream on Paramount+ when it launches

HBO mega hit ‘Lovecraft Country’, which aired on FOX Showcase last year, has been axed and will no longer return for a second season. The series drew plenty of critical acclaim, including nominations with the Golden Globes, SAGs and BAFTAs. It was also nominated for 18 Emmy Awards this week.

Ê

The axe has also been wielded on four US comedies on Netflix. ‘The Crew’, ‘Mr. Iglesias’, ‘Bonding’ and ‘Country Comfort’ have all been given the boot.

To be told at 50 I may need a knee operation one day was a shock. Not wanting an operation at this point, I needed an alternative, and what an alternative I found. In pain, I started Arborvitae treatment and after two weeks my pain and swelling had reduced. Now my pain has gone. If I am going to have a big day in the yard or in the bobcat, I make sure I take my Arborvitae first. What a fabulous product this is! No one should go through life in pain and I will tell anyone that will listen – if you have early onset mild osteo arthritis – start taking Arborvitae, it has certainly helped me. – Testimonial from Gary of Kenthurst Arborvitae is available in over 1000 chemists and health food stores Australia wide. Expect a rollercoaster ride! Tuesday’s Mercury/Uranus link lights up your quirky and creative mind. Friday night’s Full Moon (in Aquarius) lights up your bohemian nature and your restless heart, but it will also stimulate your reckless side. So proceed carefully (especially with financial matters) otherwise you could provoke a fiery response from a cranky ex, a hidden enemy or a known frenemy. The weekend favours creative ideas and work projects.

This week you’ll feel compelled to connect with your inner world or help someone in need, as the Full Moon fires up your spiritual and humanitarian zone. With the Sun, Mars and Venus visiting your job zone, creative and decisive action is required at work. But don’t waste your numerous talents with unproductive daydreaming that leads nowhere! If you procrastinate and dither around, then promising opportunities and important connections will pass you by.

Are you procrastinating about which project to pursue? A bored and unengaged Ram is a recipe for trouble. With the Full Moon activating your aspirations zone, focus on your goals for the future. However – with your ruler Mars racing through fellow fire sign Leo – too much haste could land you in hot water. Do your best to get the balance right between thinking things through and taking action. On the weekend, be extra understanding towards a family member.

The focus is on Home Sweet Home as the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars visit your domestic and neighbourhood zones. So it’s a good week to patch up problems with a family member, spruce up your living space or make improvements in your local community. The Full Moon also urges you to display your true capabilities, as you discover your individual groove and assert your independence at work. Avoid being too stubborn though.

During a global pandemic times are tough, travel is limited and many places around the world have imposed restrictions or are in lockdown. This week the Full Moon encourages you to explore and experiment as you study, travel locally or venture into brave new personal territory. It’s also important to capitalise on your current international contacts. With careful nurturing, who knows where they will lead in the future? On the weekend, tap into your creative side.

Full Moons usually activate your moody side. And this week’s fulsome moonbeams are in the unpredictable sign of Aquarius. Prepare to be at your stupendous best and your tempestuous worst! If life becomes too hectic, then you’re likely to withdraw into your Crab shell so you can rest, recuperate and rejuvenate. It’s also a week when mysteries abound and someone could tell you something in strict confidence. The question is … can you keep a secret?

This week the Sun, Venus and Mars gallop through Leo, so your dynamic nature is on display for all to see. But the VenusJupiter opposition and the Full Moon turbo-charge your tendency to overdo things. So there’s a predilection to promise the Moon and then under-deliver or blow your budget with a spontaneous spending spree. Clever Cats will reign in extravagance with a healthy dose of discipline. The weekend is wonderful for daydreams and romantic reveries.

HOROSCOPES

Prepare for a colourful and chaotic week! Venus shifts into your sign midweek, which boosts your natural charm and Virgo va-voom. Creative ideas and persuasive arguments will keep your mercurial mind well stimulated. But Friday night’s Full Moon looks rather disruptive, as your usual routine is turned upside down. Plus avoid the tendency to criticise yourself … and others. With a flexible attitude, you’ll navigate your way through any temporary turbulence.

The planets push you to dream a dream, wish upon a star and set an ambitious new goal. And Venus encourages you to forgive transgressions from the past and stop worrying about the future. Old solutions won’t work – you need to keep up-to-date with fresh ways of solving problems. So try to take each day at a time as you focus on enjoying the here and now! Be inspired by birthday great, guitar guru Carlos Santana: “The present is where everything begins.”

You have ambitious professional goals for the future but sometimes you hold yourself back for fear of looking foolish. This week’s stars encourage you to be confident and proactive as you reach for the stars! You’re in the mood to fix something around the house or repair a problematic relationship with a stressed relative. A family member could also turn to you for some insightful words of wisdom. If you listen to your intuition, you’ll know what to say.

Your travel zones are being activated by the Sun, Venus, Mars, Saturn and the Full Moon. So you’re feeling restless but foreign adventures will be thin on the ground in 2021. Don’t despair! Find creative mini-escapades that are closer to home and plan to explore further afield in 2022. Be inspired by birthday great, aviator Amelia Earhart. “Adventure is worthwhile in itself.” When it comes to work or family, don’t promise more than you can deliver.

This week it’s all about money honey, as the Full Moon stirs up trouble and you need to find an innovative solution to a cash flow problem. If you’re a clever Capricorn, then you’ll pal up with a financially astute person who helps you find ways to develop a second stream of income. The more proactive, creative and collaborative you are, the more positive your financial future will be! It’s also a good time to get closer to loved ones who you can really rely on.

Transition to Retirement can boost savings and maintain cash flow

Four tips to avoid aches and pains while working from your home

Those approaching retirement have almost certainly heard their friends and colleagues use the term Transition to Retirement (TTR). Some years ago the government allowed those over 55 to access part of their Superannuation through a Pension, the logic was to allow workers to ease out of the workforce into retirement. This ruling also provided an opportunity for those of preservation age but still working to reduce their tax and increase Super contributions. The reason that the TTR is so effective is that it allows us to replace fully taxable income with income that is taxed concessionally, taking advantage of the advantageous Superannuation taxation rates. The first step in establishing a TTR strategy is rolling Superannuation into a NonCommutable Allocated Pension (NCAP). An NCAP is able to pay a pension of up to 10 per cent of the total balance of the fund, however unlike a traditional allocated pension, no lump sum withdrawals are allowed. The NCAP has an advantage over superannuation (and all other investments) in the fact that there is no tax on either income or capital gains. Once the NCAP is established, we elect to commence a pension, the pension amount

ith the current restrictions and lockdowns resulting from COVID-19, many Australians have started working from home. In the clinic we are seeing a wave of individuals with aches and pains due to working from home. Here are four easy ways to prevent pain whilst you spend your days at home. 1. Schedule in regular movement. Frequent breaks are essential throughout the day. This is not only good for your mental health, but your physical health too. We suggest that every 60 minutes you try to get up and go for a small walk, perform some stretches, or complete some simple home exercises. 2. Change your working position. Like regular movement, preventing prolonged static positioning is essential in preventing pain. Every 30 minutes you should change the position that you are working in. Changing your seat setting, standing, and kneeling are all examples of different positions you could try. Remember, your next posture is the best posture. 3. Home ergonomic set up. Ergonomics is how well your workspace caters

is calculated based on the individual’s circumstances, but must fall between four and 10 per cent. This is paid directly to the client, between the ages of 55-59 it is taxed concessionally, after age 60 the income is tax free. By receiving a pension we have increased the take home pay of the client, this is sometimes the desired result (particularly in the event the client is reducing work hours), but the most popular use of the TTR is to have the take home pay remain unchanged. By salary sacrificing the excess income directly into Superannuation, the take home pay remains the same as it was prior to commencing the strategy, but income tax is significantly reduced. Funds contributed to Superannuation are taxed at 15 per cent, in most cases much lower than marginal tax rates. The tax savings made in the years prior to retirement through a TTR strategy really add up to significant differences at retirement. If you are past preservation age (currently 56) it is well worth investigating if a TTR is suitable for your situation. It is an excellent way to boost retirement savings without negatively affecting cash flow.

W

for your body. When transitioning to working from home, it is important to make small adjustments to ensure that this new workspace, which you will often be spending long hours in, accommodates your body. Below are some recommendations to use in your home workspace: – Use a chair that supports your entire back and is easily adjusted while seated – Raise your seat height high enough so that both feet rest flat on the ground – Use a desk that has adequate leg space – Place you monitor/laptop screen directly in front of you, about 45-60cm away – Adjust your computer monitor/ laptop screen to be at an appropriate eye height – Keep your keyboard and mouse close to your body. 4. Daily exercise. Did you know that there is an increased risk of death associated with sitting for eight or more hours a day? Research suggests that performing at least one hour of physical activity per day can help reduce this risk.

Keeping your dog entertained during the long days of lockdown

46

WW44771

W

ith most families currently in lockdown due to the COVID19 virus, our pets are probably wondering why they are not going out for walks or visiting the dog park. It is important for your dog to continue to exercise during this time. Our canine companions thrive on social engagement and exploring smells, sights, and sounds. They are used to getting those needs met outside, so we have to ensure we provide extra stimulation indoors with scent games, fetch and tug-o-war games while still remembering doggy manners and basic obedience. While it is still safe to walk your dog as long as you’re practicing social distancing, here are some indoor activities Haussmann recommends you can do with your dog the rest of the time. Make your dog work for its treats One easy way to provide mental stimulation and enrichment is to have your dog work for their food. Toys such as Treat Balls or Kong Toys where food falls out as the toy is played with are great. Play hide-and-seek This is a great game for the kids who may be going a little stir crazy. It is also a time to teach your dog to come when called.

Play fetch or set up an obstacle course A smaller area should never be a barrier to a dog having fun and exercising. A simple game of fetch in the hallway or garage can burn energy and be lots of fun. You can also move chairs and small furniture to create a small obstacle course. Teaching your dog new tricks such as going under a table or chair is rewarding for both you and your dog. Use scents as toys Hide your dog’s favourite treat around your home and watch them track it down. Make sure the treats are not hidden in areas that you do not want your pet to access or stores inappropriate goods. Make some puzzles Creating puzzles from everyday items is simple yet stimulating for your dog. Simply filling an empty box with dry food and cutting small holes in the side will keep your dog entertained for hours. Your dog will move the box around as dry food falls out. This current situation is rapidly changing and we will be here to provide the highest standards of care and answer any of your questions, so don’t hesitate to get in touch. Toyota ramps up safety More peace of mind for drivers as new features put safety at forefront NATHAN TAYLOR

T

oyota has improved the safety and styling of its best-selling LandCruiser Prado large SUV range, introducing new active safety technology on lower variants while boosting the visual appeal of the family off-roader. Following a comprehensive update in August 2020, the Prado has been further upgraded, with additional advanced safety features that were previously reserved for higher-grade variants. Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations, Sean Hanley, said the safety of all Toyota customers was of utmost importance. “We are committed to ensuring our customers benefit from the peace of mind that comes with the latest advanced safety features,” he said. “These safety updates, along with the range of visual enhancements, ensure there has never been a better time to explore Australia’s vast backyard in a Prado.” The safety of entry-level GX and GXL variants has been bolstered with the

addition of blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert as standard, joining existing Toyota Safety Sense features such as high-speed active cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assistance, and the pre-collision safety system with

day/night pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection. GX grades also feature more premium exterior appointments with a chromeaccented grille and puddle lamps. VX and Kakadu variants have been

upgraded with larger new design 19-inch alloy wheels with an ‘Active’ design for the VX and ‘Prestige’ design for the Kakadu. All Prado grades are powered by a strong, efficient 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing maximum outputs of150kW and 500Nm, and mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission. The Prado is designed for extended journeys with a total of up to 150-litre fuel capacity offered through the SUV’s 87-litre main tank and 63-litre sub tank on versions that have the full-size spare wheel mounted on the tailgate. The Prado remains an ideal vehicle for family adventure, with a braked towing capacity of 3000kg and strong off-road capability. Complementing its interior flexibility, all variants bar the GX can be specified with the flat tailgate option pack, which moves the full-size spare tyre from the tailgate to under the body of the vehicle. The Prado has become a staple in Australian homes, being the most popular vehicle in its segment for 11 of the last 13 years – an achievement it is on track to replicate in 2021.

Teenage dream now a reality NATHAN TAYLOR

Madison Ashby is bound for Tokyo.

or months there’s been endless debate about whether the Tokyo Olympic Games should go ahead or not, but after hearing how much it means to a young local athlete, the scores of doubters may actually change their tune. In an interview with the Weekender seven years ago, Madison Ashby spoke of her dream of representing Australia at an Olympics. At the tender age of 13, the then McCarthy Catholic College student had a monumental goal, and nothing was going to stand in her way from achieving it. Last week, after nearly a decade excelling at numerous sports, the now 20-year-old was given the news that she had earned a ticket to Tokyo as part of the Australian Women’s Rugby Sevens team. Madison Ashby, the supremely talented kid from Jamisontown, would become our newest local Olympian. “I’m still speechless, this is the pinnacle of sport,” an excited Ashby told the Weekender from a pre-Olympic camp in Cairns. “When I found out a week ago I had made the team, I FaceTimed my whole family and told them the news. Everyone was so excited and so happy for me. “I got pretty upset telling them… I think it was a very emotional day for everyone. We all cried so many times.” Ashby has been part of the Australian Rugby

Sevens set-up for several years. Since 2019, she’s been travelling the world competing against some of the best rugby nations on the planet, but her time with the squad hasn’t been a smooth ride. From being in and out of the team to switching positions and the most gruelling training sessions, the slog’s been a rollercoaster of ‘Bush Beast’ proportions for the former rugby league, touch footy and OzTag star. “Yeah it’s been pretty tough, but we’re training for an Olympic sport, so there’s going to be lots of ups and downs,” Ashby admitted. “I haven’t been home in about a month, so it’s hard not seeing friends and family but it is what it is. You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do and I’m pretty privileged and blessed to have this job.” Ashby and her teammates will depart for Tokyo this Monday before hitting the field for their first game in late July against host nation Japan. While sadly no fans will be in attendance due to the pandemic, Ashby is confident her team can challenge for a medal even without the roar of a live crowd. “We’ve been playing a lot games in Sydney with no one watching us, so we’re kind of used to no crowds due to COVID. Honestly, we are there to play and our coaches have prepared us for this scenario,” she said. “Winning a medal is definitely a possibility. We’ve been having some world-class games recently against New Zealand and Fiji, and you just never know who will turn up on the day and how you’re going to perform.”

Olympics have Penrith Meet the eight local athletes hoping dreams do come true: Hard work pays NATHAN TAYLOR

C

lose to 500 Australian athletes, including 306 debutants, are making their way to Japan to compete in the biggest competition of their lives – the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games. Incredibly, eight of those inspirational Aussies competing in Tokyo have a special local connection either through birth, residency, school, training base or club. From July 23 to August 8, we encourage you to gather up your green and gold, and cheer on our local athletes to glory. Two-time Olympic medallist and Leonay resident Jessica Fox is our biggest shot at gold, while newcomers Madison Ashby (Rugby Sevens) and Josh Green (Basketball) are also a strong chance of medalling. Fans can look forward to the country’s biggest-ever broadcast and digital event. For the first time in Australian free-to-air television history, there will be 45 dedicated Olympic Games channels across Seven and 7plus – all live, free and in HD. The Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics will screen live next Friday.

While the upcoming Games may look a little different to years’ past due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the excitement and spirit of the Olympics will be on full display more than ever before. Make sure you visit the Weekender’s website and social media channels throughout the duration of the Games for up-to-date information.

Around the grounds AFL: GWS are now out of the all-important top eight after falling to the Gold Coast Suns by a point in Round 17 of the AFL. Playing at their new home away from home in Ballarat, the Giants conceded two goals in the final four minutes to lose to the Suns 65-64. Meanwhile, the Giants will return to regional Victoria this Saturday afternoon when they take on the Sydney Swans in Sydney Derby XXI. The match against the Swans was originally scheduled to be played at Giants Stadium, however has been relocated due to the Sydney COVID outbreak and subsequent border closures. It’ll be the second week in a row the Giants call Mars Stadium home, with the match to get underway at 1.45pm tomorrow. Giants Chief Executive David Matthews said: “It’s unfortunate this match can’t go ahead in front of our loyal Sydney members however the health and wellbeing of the community must come first during this difficult time. The Sydney Derby is always an entertaining contest between two fierce rivals with this week’s game being no exception, and so I encourage everyone who can attend to get along and watch another great spectacle.” GWS will assess member entitlements and compensation options at the completion of the 2021 season once they have a full picture of the impact this disrupted season has had on members. SUPER NETBALL: Giants Netball have

bounced back from last week’s disappointing loss, defeating the Collingwood Magpies 58-49 in Round 10 of the Super Netball. The Giants remain in touch with the ladder leaders after leading for the

entire match and subsequently spoiling the celebrations for Magpies skipper Geva Mentor’s 200th national league game. The result sees the Giants sit comfortably in third spot on the Super Netball ladder, with a date against the Sunshine Coast Lightning set down for this Saturday afternoon at USC Stadium.

NETBALL: Penrith District Netball Association has suspended their popular winter competition until further notice. Netball, along with most sports across the Greater Sydney region, has been postponed due to the current Stay At Home orders in place across much of the state. It’s hoped all sporting competitions can resume in the coming weeks if and when COVID-19 infections begin to subside and restrictions are lifted. MOTOR RACING: Congratulations to local driver Jayden Ojeda, who enjoyed a strong weekend in Townsville competing in the Dunlop Super2 Series at Reid Park. The 21-year-old scored finishes of second and third behind runaway winner Broc Feeney, who reclaimed the series lead. MW Motorsport driver Ojeda was third for the round, with Tim Blanchard his closest rival across the weekend. FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers have announced the departure of Graham Dorrans, who will return to play in Scotland next season. Dorrans played 23 times for the Wanderers in the A-League 2020/21 season, scoring four goals and captaining the team on multiple occasions.

estern Sydney did whatever they could to keep him but, in the end, an offer to play football overseas for the first time was too juicy for Wanderers Player of the Year Bruce Kamau. The 26-year-old will swap the A-League for the Greek Super League after a record-breaking season with the Wanderers that saw him score 12 goals in 23 games. Just last month, Kamau was crowned the King of Western Sydney, taking home a swag of awards at the Wanders Medal, but now he’ll be spending the next few weeks downloading every Greek translation app available. “It’s been an enjoyable journey over the last three seasons playing in front of the best members and fans in Australia,” Kamau said. “I’d like to thank Chairman Paul Lederer, CEO John Tsastimas

Tomer Hemed has signed with the Western Sydney Wanderers.

and head coach Carl Robinson, the staff, members and fans for what has been a memorable three seasons.” Tsastimas thanked Kamau for his contribution, opening the

door for a reunion at some point down the track. “We would like to thank Bruce for his efforts both on and off the pitch, for the Wanderers and the western Sydney region,” he said.

“Everyone at the club wishes him well in his overseas stint and we hope to see him back one day in the Red & Black.” Less than two hours after the club made the Sunday morning announcement, the Wanderers fired off another media release confirming the signing of star striker Tomer Hemed. The Israeli international comes to the club after a recent stint with the Wellington Phoenix. The 34-year-old, who was named the 2017/18 Israeli Footballer of the Year, is a proven goalscorer and will link up with the Wanderers for the commencement of the club’s pre-season preparations at the end of the month. “We are delighted to have Tomer with us for the upcoming A-League season,” coach Robinson said. “Tomer is an excellent forward and brings overseas experience at both a club and country level, as well as an understanding of the domestic football landscape that will greatly benefit the team.”
