abor will top the Lindsay ballot paper at the May 21 Federal Election, a small win for local candidate Trevor Ross on the road to polling day.

Sitting Liberal MP Melissa McIntosh will be fifth on the ballot paper, which features seven local candidates.

Outside of the major parties, candidates from the Greens, One Nation, United Australia Party, the Liberal Democrats and the Informed Medical Options Party will also contest Lindsay. The election campaign is set to go up a gear next week with the Easter and ANZAC period now behind us and Labor Leader Anthony

Albanese out of isolation after being diagnosed with COVID-19 last week. On the local campaign trail over the last week, Labor announced an $8.5 million investment in Cook Park at St Marys if elected, while the Liberals turned the sod on the $1.5 billion HyperOne initiative in Penrith.

Housing affordability a major issue ahead of Federal Election EMILY FESZCZUK

ith housing a hot topic in the lead-up to the Federal Election, both sides of politics, industry organisations and the community have come together to discuss the rising cost of rent and home ownership in western Sydney. ‘The Big Housing Debate’, which was run by community housing provider Link Wentworth and Western Sydney Community forum, took place last week at The Joan in Penrith. Moderated by ABC journalist Juanita Phillips, the event included a range of speakers including Member of the NSW Legislative Council Shayne Mallard and Shadow Minister for Water, Housing and Homelessness Rose Jackson. Link Wentworth CEO Andrew McAnulty said it is necessary for all levels of government and the private sector, to band together for solutions. “We believe this is a critical issue, and that everyone has the right to a decent home. the private sector, we can push forward for tangible solutions,” he said. “We need to be saying that social and affordable housing is infrastructure that is an essential part of any functional city.” The debate also discussed a report commissioned by the Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue, which revealed the demand for social and affordable housing in western Sydney equates to 16 per cent of all demand in NSW, with an expected

additional shortfall of 28,200 homes by 2036. Social housing resident Mary (last name withheld) shared her story of struggling to find an affordable home as a single mother of two children. Mary spoke of how she was told it was a nine-year wait for homes in certain areas, so she ended up privately renting for a year before accepting a house on an unsafe street so she could avoid homelessness.

“Private rent was 60 per cent of my income and only with help from parents could I feed my sons,” she said. “I understand landlords want to make a profit but sometimes it is just greed. We need to see more housing available for people on benefits or low income, as well as being in all different parts of Sydney.” The shortage of social housing stock was identified as a key issue, along with the need to upgrade current housing.

Penrith rides the radio waves I t was April 2008 and the often controversial and always changing Penrith radio scene was at the centre of another major shake-up. Kick FM – which had launched with a star-studded line-up a year or two earlier – had dumped a raft of its on-air talent and replaced it with a bunch of good people who were experienced journos but had minimal radio experience. Former Weekender Editor and current Penrith City Councillor Bernard Bratusa had Alan Jones shaking in his boots by grabbing the breakfast shift. Panthers lower grade forward and Papua New Guinea international James Nightingale was handed the gig of breakfast newsreader. One day, he read a story about Alzheimer’s Awareness Day twice in the same bulletin. That was James – cheeky and always ready to deliver a laugh. I happened to be the beneficiary of these changes, installed as the Drive host. It was a long shift – 2pm to 7pm weekdays – but one that allowed me to become totally engrossed in the radio world, an industry I always loved but had very little experience in. I even used to drive the Kick 87.6 car around Penrith. One thing that stood about Kick was its hyperlocal approach. From bushfires to car accidents, local sport, politics... if it was happening in Penrith, you knew you could trust Kick to cover it. We covered the NRL without the rights to do so, somehow getting away with doing ‘live updates’ from the stands that sounded much more like ball-by-ball commentary than an update. To say Kick skated on thin ice at times

in terms of what it was or wasn’t allowed to do would be an understatement. But it was all done with Penrith at heart. Kick would last only a couple of years, entering the museum of Penrith radio stations highlighted by the likes of 2KA and OneFM. As announcers we probably didn’t enter Penrith radio folklore with the likes of Frank Ley or Brian Sanders, but boy we had some fun. Kick was replaced by Vintage FM on the 87.6 dial, which maintained its Penrith focus over the next decade. In more recent times, My88 has been Penrith’s go-to radio station, broadcasting out of the same Jamisontown studio that Kick did all those years ago. But that studio fell somewhat silent this week, with My88 moving off the FM band and entirely online through iHeart Radio. It is a sign of the times and will give them wider reach, and they remain committed

to keeping content focused on greater western Sydney. Vintage FM meanwhile has been sold, though its focus had shifted to the Camden, Macarthur and Wollondilly regions some time ago. Its previous owner Wayne Willmington remains connected to the station and is also working strongly with his Target Radio Network. Faith Radio will take on the FM radio licence that Vintage and My88 once dominated, but without a local approach. In short, for the first time in a long time, Penrith has been left without a traditional local radio station. There are other community players around of course, like WOW FM out of St Marys. And there’s plenty of rumours doing the rounds that another Penrith station may emerge out of the Jamisontown studios, again possibly online-only. From 2KA to OneFM, Kick to Vintage, and countless other iterations over many decades, Penrith radio has always been a crazy ride, and I doubt it will stay silent for too long. But it’ll never quite be the same. The glory days, as you might call it, are likely gone. There is of course still a place for local radio and in fact any community without a dedicated station providing hyperlocal news and updates is all the poorer. But these days, the ‘big three’ of newspapers, radio and television are joined by a plethora of media sources, and with various rules governing local stations, commercial success can be tough. Whatever happens, radio in Penrith will always have a storied history. Hopefully another chapter will still be written.

Labor promises upgrade to Cook Park if it wins election EMILY FESZCZUK

abor will hand over an $8.5 million cheque to upgrade Cook Park in St Marys if it wins government next month. Shadow Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, Jason Clare and Lindsay Labor Candidate Trevor Ross met with Nepean FC players and their parents on Friday to promise the funds if Labor proves successful on May 21. “If we win the next election, we will build three synthetic pitches here which means if it rains on Friday night, you can still play on Saturday,” Mr Clare said. “The money will also expand the club house and grandstand, provide disabled access, upgrade the car park, add walking tracks and really good outdoor exercise equipment.” With over 150,000 visitations to the park each year and the population of St Marys set to grow by over 40 per cent by 2036, Mr Ross told the Weekender that new facilities are vital. “As a firefighter for the last 40 years, I know health and fitness is really important

as well as working as team, so it is really exciting to make this announcement,” Mr Ross said. “There is a lot of children in this area and adult sport which has been overlooked for a long time, so it is about time St Marys gets facilities that Penrith has already been getting.” Senator Tony Sheldon also attended the

announcement as did Penrith City Councillor Robin Cook as the promised money would be in addition to funding that has already been committed by Penrith City Council. President of Nepean Football Association, Frances Refalo said the work would help with greater plans to improve the association and subsequent 30 clubs.

“We are currently working with Penrith City Council, Football NSW and Football Australia for the Women’s World Cup to be a training venue for one of the teams,” Ms Refalo said. “The money is imperative to get it over the mark and we are trying to build a group football area and we have so many plans for improvement so it would be amazing.”

Election candidate calls for pandemic Royal Commission EMILY FESZCZUK

R

ebekah Ray wants to ensure the Government acts with truth, transparency and accountability following the Federal Election. The traditional Chinese medicine practitioner and owner of an allied health business in Penrith is a new candidate for Lindsay, representing the Informed Medical Options Party (IMOP). Sitting down with the Weekender, Ms Ray explained how she has always had an interest in politics but had grown concerned with how “out of touch” the Federal Government has been in recent years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have seen the debt go up quite exponentially from $350 billion to over $1.3 trillion, thousands of small businesses were wiped out and our education, healthcare, aged care and mental health care systems are in crisis,” Ms Ray said. “People ended up dying alone without being able to say goodbye to loved ones and there were barriers to routine health checks. We want to implement a Royal

Commission into the COVID-19 pandemic to see if the response was appropriate.” With IMOP forming in 2016 in response to the ‘No Jab No Play, No Jab No Pay’ initiative, which mandated immunisation for children in childcare, COVID-19 is a key focus for the minor party. “A lot of people in Australia believe we have freedom of speech, but it is not written into the Constitution or legislation so medical practitioners have been medically gagged by AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) for the past two years,” Ms Ray said. “There are major issues regarding forced medical intervention and the COVID-19 jab is still in its experimental phase until 2023. Full informed medical consent is a legal right of every Australian citizen, and we are fighting for democratic and human rights. “ Along with ending mandates, the party wants to implement a Bill of Rights, further limit foreign ownership of business, land, and water, as well as implement a curfew at Western Sydney Airport. “Sometimes the western suburbs get forgotten by these career politicians and the airport at Mascot is not run 24/7 but in

a residential area we will have noise and air pollution all the time, so we deserve better,” Ms Ray said. “I am 100 per cent self-funded, which

speaks volumes about how passionate I am. I am proactive and want to see the best results and outcomes for the community in which I have grown up and Iive in.”

Greens push for votes in Lindsay EMILY FESZCZUK

P

ieter-Joris Morssink thinks that it’s time for “practical and progressive politics” in Lindsay. The Federal Greens Candidate from Cranebrook is hoping to build on the 1.3 per cent swing to it at the 2019 election. Mr Morssink was a tradesman before he had a serious motorcycle accident which led him to getting his Master of Teaching and then working with disadvantaged youth. Previously active in the Labor Party, Mr Morssink discovered the Greens after taking a break from politics. “I was watching a webinar with Indigenous Senator Lidia Thorpe that was talking about truth telling and I thought about how current politicians are not honest,” Mr Morssink said. “It stoked the passion in me again, so I joined the Nepean Greens which is very grass roots and robust and got involved.” Raising a blended family, Mr Morssink thinks that services to aid everyday life is important. “I believe in free TAFE and university, along with dental and mental health via

Medicare and surviving my accident I know the impacts of physical and emotional trauma firsthand,” he said. “Increasing welfare payments and raising the minimum wage makes sense because when people earn money they go out and boost the economy, so the government benefits in the end.” With climate action a key topic of debate, the Greens have strong policies dealing with the environment. “We want EV infrastructure for transport because electric vehicles are the way moving forward as we consume our supplies,” he said. “We should also tax oil, gas and coal companies and have fairer shares with the taxation system, so the majority isn’t paying a lot of tax and billion-dollar companies pay zero.” Also wanting to establish a Federal ICAC, Mr Morssink said the party wants to ensure the government is accountable for its actions. “I am trying to advocate and raise awareness for what the Greens stand for. If we can get more numbers, we can drive a wedge between the major parties and reclaim the balance of government,” he said.

Four out of seven candidates were present in St Marys to see where they will be placed on the ballot paper as they hope to be chosen to represent the electorate of Lindsay. The Labor Party’s Trevor Ross was pulled out first, nabbing the coveted number one position. Pieter-Joris Morssink from the Greens has secured the second spot while Max Jago from the One Nation Party is third.

United Australia Party candidate Joseph O’Connor was fourth to be called out while the current Member for Lindsay, Melissa McIntosh will sit at number five as she tries to retain the marginal seat for the Liberal Party. Gareth McClure, who was also present at the draw, will be in sixth position on the ballot paper as he represents the Liberal Democrats. The seventh and final spot went to Rebekah Ray who is representing the Informed Medical Options Party. The election will take place on May 21. GPs want fairer share Doctors launch new petition over Medicare rebate as practice costs soar EMILY FESZCZUK

L

ocal doctors are campaigning for more funding to ensure General Practitioners are accessible and affordable for community members. Our Medical has launched a petition for the Federal Government to increase the amount of the healthcare budget that goes toward GPs. This comes after the recent interim report released by the Senate Inquiry into general practice for outer metropolitan and regional Australia recommended that the Medicare rebate for general practice services be substantially increased. Clinical Lead General Practitioner at Our Medical Penrith, Doctor Harry Pope said the petition that has amassed over 12,000 signatures so far shines a light on the reality for GPs. “The Medicare rebate was frozen for several years and is now indexed at a rate below inflation, while operating costs for general practice continue to rise,” Dr Pope said. “As the true frontline of Australia’s high quality healthcare system, general

practice is relatively underfunded only receiving seven per cent of the healthcare budget. We want to protect general practice now and into the future.”

Dr Pope said he hopes whichever party forms government after the election looks at the issue otherwise the system could deteriorate for patients.

“When patients have a wound dressed at a GP clinic, most of the current Medicare rebate is used to cover just the cost of consumables, before all other operational costs. We don’t want to be in a position where patients need to buy their own bandages and bring them into a clinic for dressing,” he said. “Imagine if you had to bring your own IV drip solution to a hospital? This is not a position that we should be facing in Australia so we need greater support for general practice.” Dr Pope is also concerned about GP shortages. Labor Candidate for Lindsay Trevor Ross told the Weekender that he supports Our Medical and has signed the petition. “Under the Liberals, the average outof-pocket medical costs have increased in Lindsay by over 50 per cent and GP shortages have made access to health care harder than ever,” Mr Ross said. “Labor built Medicare and only Labor can be trusted to keep Medicare safe and strong, putting the health of our people first.” To view the petition, visit https://www. change.org/SaveOurGPs.

Why your poo could be the key EMILY FESZCZUK

W

hile it might seem strange, scientists believe the secret to longevity could be found in people’s poo. Scientists are searching for people from the age 13 to 100 to give stool samples at Nepean Hospital to learn about healthy living. Researchers have often looked at faecal matter when dealing with diseases but there is a gap in the knowledge about what constitutes a normal state for gut microbes. The Healthy Optimal Australian Microbiome (HOAM) study at UNSW Sydney aims to fill that gap through defining what the ultimate healthy microbiome looks like and is now looking for western Sydney participants. University of NSW Gastroenterological Specialist, Professor Emad El-Omar said the study is looking for people with good health to see how people can limit their own affects of ageing. “Getting to extremely old age while still being cognitively well is a tremendous achievement. We are hoping that there is

something in the microbiome of healthy centenarians that can tell us how to age well,” he said. “By studying what the microbiome looks like in healthy and cognitively robust older adults we can determine the factors that have helped them to age so well.” A multi-generational study, HOAM wants to look at a range of adults, including seniors, who are cognitively well or who have dementia, along with athletes who exercise more than three hours per week. “Healthy and supremely fit athletes also offer a unique insight. Not only are they physically fit, but they must be at the top of their game emotionally and mentally too,” he said. “We want to see what in their microbiome might help them achieve peak physical, metabolic, cardiovascular and mental performance. We are trying to define the microbiome of optimally healthy individuals across the age spectrum.” The majority of the study is completed online through a survey but samples of stool, urine, oral and blood will be collected at Nepean Hospital. Jamisontown: Assault charge after road rage incident on weekend A man has been charged after a road rage incident in Jamisontown. About 12.20pm on Saturday, April 23, it is alleged a 36-year-old Glenmore Park man was attempting to reverse his vehicle out of a parking spot on York Road, Jamisontown. At the same time a 67-year-old Warrimoo man was driving. The 36-year-old allegedly put his arm out to indicate to the 67-year-old that he was moving but he did not notice. It is alleged the 36-year-old pulled his car out in front of the 67-year-old’s vehicle and intentionally slowed down. Both drivers stopped at the intersection of Abel Street, where the 36-year-old allegedly got out of his vehicle and kicked the other car, causing a dent. The other man then exited his vehicle so both men were face to face. The 67-year-old put his hand up before the 36-year-old allegedly punched him to the nose. Witnesses stopped and separated both parties. The 36-year-old man was charged with ‘Destroy or damage property’ and ‘Assault occasioning actual bodily harm’. He will appear in Penrith Local Court on Wednesday, June 15.

Cranebrook: Man arrested after allegedly destroying property

A man has been charged after a terrifying attack in Cranebrook. About 2.45pm on Saturday, April 23, a couple were at their residential premises on Ben Nevis Road, Cranebrook. It is alleged a 24-year-old Cranebrook man, who is known to the couple, drove onto the front lawn of the house in a Toyota Hilux and proceeded to do a burnout on the front lawn, causing grass to be ripped up and dirt sprayed all over. The man then allegedly went to the front door of the premises and yelled at the woman several times whilst holding a cricket bat. When the woman did not respond the

The man then ran and got into a silver Holden Commodore, which was reported to have no number plates and damage to several panels. The occupant of the house dialled Triple Zero and police attended a premises nearby to speak with the 24-year-old man. When the man was informed that he was placed under arrest, he attempted to run. Officers engaged in a short foot pursuit with the man, and he was arrested in Dolomite Road, Cranebrook. The man will appear in court on June 6.

Penrith: Man charged after making false emergency calls A man has been charged after making several false Triple Zero calls in Penrith. About 11.15pm on Saturday, April 23, it is alleged that a 25-year-old Emu Plains man contacted Triple Zero claiming that he had been assaulted at a licensed premises. Around 11.25pm the man called again asking when police would arrive. Police attended and obtained information and the CCTV from the licensed premises, which allegedly showed the man being refused entry and being asked to leave. A short time later the same man attended Penrith Police Station, where he allegedly started to verbally abuse the staff before running from the station. About 1.50am on Sunday, April 24, the man called Triple Zero again asking for police and making more threats. Around 2am, the man has once again called Triple Zero, claiming again that he was assaulted and that he had been arguing with police. At 2.50am the man contacted Triple Zero another time, again alleging he had been assaulted. Around 2.56am the man contacted Triple Zero for a sixth time complaining police had refused to assist. At this time police sighted the man on High Street, Penrith where he was arrested. He was charged and will appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, May 17.

PUBLIC V PRIVATE COMPANIES The Internet has been abuzz this week with news that the world’s richest man, Elon Musk is set to buy Twitter for a reported $60 billion (AUD), transforming the publicly listed social media platform into a private company. We thought that we would take the opportunity to explain the differences between a private company and a public company in the Australian context. Private companies are those usually owned by a small number of private individuals or entities with limited revenue and restrictions on numbers of shareholders. Most small or medium businesses like suburban law firms, petrol stations, butchers, bakers, and candlestick makers are owned and operated by private companies. Public companies are typically much larger with much more revenue and are owned by many thousands, sometimes millions of shareholders. Examples of Australian public companies include Telstra and most Banks. Here are some of the differences between the two: • A large private company is categorised as one which has consolidated revenue of $50 million or more and consolidated gross assets of $25 million or more for each financial year. In addition, the company employs 100 or more employees. If a private company is under these thresholds it is considered a small private company. Private companies have a limit of 50 shareholders who are not employees of the company and must have a minimum of one Director. • For public companies there is no limit to the amount of shareholders, however there is a requirement that a public company has a minimum of three Directors, two

A public company also has to have a registered office accessible to the public whereas a private company’s registered office does not have to be accessible to the public. Both types of companies are essentially governed by a piece of legislation called the Corporations Act, however compliance and regulations with respect to public companies are typically far more onerous than private companies. For example, a public company is required to release a Prospectus to shareholders including details of the company’s financial situation (risks, profits, losses, balance sheets etc). Conversely, private companies are limited in the manner in which they can raise capital. Private companies can crowd fund in certain circumstances however. Public companies also have more onerous reporting obligations and are required to disclose certain financial information to shareholders annually. Generally speaking most companies start as small proprietary/ private companies and stay that way. Becoming a public company is an enormous step and is usually reserved for ultra-successful businesses. Another unique difference between private and public companies is that the Directors of private companies are often also shareholders and essentially run companies like any other small business. Public companies, and some large private companies, tend to have a Board of Directors external to the shareholders, or at least have some Directors who are independent of the business.

NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Executive Director Regulatory Operations, Steve Beaman, said heavy rain and flood waters could have washed a variety of contaminants into the river. “The EPA recommends that water from waterways in flood-impacted areas is not consumed or used for any recreational or agricultural purpose,” he said. “Swimming in waters affected by flood or stormwater can expose swimmers to dangers, and polluted waters can make you sick. The community should be cautious around waterways as chemicals, hazardous materials and other unidentified items may also be present and should not be handled.” Mr Beaman said the EPA is in the process

of removing debris from waterways across the state to support the recovery process. “In some waterways there is significant debris, much of it submerged, creating hazards for swimmers and boat operators,” he said. “This clean-up will take time though, and our immediate priority is keeping everyone safe over the holiday period.”

A Penrith City Council spokesperson said while it is usually accepted practice that swimming should generally be avoided within three days of heavy rainfall, the current conditions of the river are not suitable for swimming. “The water quality of the Nepean River is currently affected by the release of water from the dam, recent rainfall and flood

events over the past six weeks, but the water quality is expected to improve over the coming weeks and months,” he said. “The boat ramp remains closed until the safety buoys are reinstated and a diver has been able to inspect the area around the ramps for any damage or obstructions.” If you witness any significant pollution or debris in the water, contact 131 555.

he Lions Club of Penrith has donated $36,033.91 to Nepean Hospital, allowing for the purchase of a new simulation mannequin for the NICU. This donation, of which $10,000 was provided by IMB Bank, is just part of the long standing relationship that the club has had with the unit, having purchased their previous mannequin in 2010. “We had an old simulation mannequin that was actually purchased by the Lions Club 12 years ago, which we have used a huge amount both here in the hospital, and also we do outreach resuscitation training to the area of northwest New South Wales that we’re responsible,” Dr Lyn Downe said. “That mannequin has been absolutely fabulous for us, but she’s getting old, and the technology is getting old, and there

is now a new Bluetooth version which is much better in terms of not having all the leads, and so this will allow us to replace the old one that the Lions Club bought us with a new one that the Lions Club are buying for us, which is a fancier and easier to use version.” This relationship traces back over 30 years, when the unit first started. “We had the grandchild of one of the Lions Club members here at the time, who was in the unit and very sick for a long time, and that really forged the connection between the Lions Club,” Dr Downe said. This particular donation also has a personal connection for club member, Daniel Rowe. “My youngest boy has got cystic fibrosis, so I have a long history of being in hospitals, and knowing what it’s like to have a sick baby, so being able to support the NICU unit is just something that I find very satisfying,” he said.

Riding the vinyl revival St Marys record store remains in demand as vinyl becomes popular again CASSIDY PEARCE

W

ith reports of thousands of people lining up outside record stores worldwide last Saturday, April 23 for Record Store Day, it’s no surprise to hear that vinyls are well and truly in style. But, record collector and owner of St Marys Sound Centre, Neil Palmer, said that he doesn’t think they’ll ever go out of it. “Vinyl always sells,” he said. “I know a lot of blokes who do record fairs and stuff like that, and when you go to a record fair, whether it be Hurstville, Glebe, or wherever it may be, there’s hundreds of people there, always, lined up out the door.” Mr Palmer, who has his own personal collection of over 5000 vinyl records, bought St Marys Sound Centre on a whim almost five years ago. “I used to come in here and order records, but when I came in the last time, it said they were selling the place,” he said. “I was in between jobs, and I thought, okay, I’ll indulge!” Despite being a fan of rock ‘n’ roll

himself, Mr Palmer ensures to stock bits and pieces of everything at the store, from classical music to pop. This comes down to a shift in the demographic of people wanting to purchase vinyls, as although classics like Jimi Hendrix, Metallica and Kiss continue to sell well in the store, it’s the emerging interest from young people that’s changing the market. “That’s why I’ve got Mr Harry Styles, because people keep asking for him, and I thought, okay, I’m going to have to get that one,” he said. One bonus in owning the business is that Mr Palmer is finally able to play those records he already has, sharing his love of music with anyone who enters the store. “I’ve got in excess of 5000 albums. Bringing them in to play all the time was really good, because you do long hours sometimes, and you don’t get a chance to relax, especially running your own business,” he said. “I bring a pile of albums in every week and put them on a record player – it’s beautiful.” St Marys Sound Centre is located at 116 Queen Street, St Marys.

Thai favourite back in business after shock closure last month CASSIDY PEARCE

R

egular customers of Penrith’s Three Junction Thai were left in shock last month when a sign announcing its closure was spotted on the door. But the restaurant is now back open for business, with foodies cancelling their search for a new favourite Thai haunt. Despite initial confusion, it has been revealed that internal conflicts, in combination with the ongoing impacts of the pandemic, led the popular restaurant to close its doors. Now long-time chef Alan Po has stepped up to the plate, taking over the High Street business from his brother and is back serving delicious meals. Having been the chef for much of the business’ history, Mr Po said he’s gotten to know many of Three Junction Thai’s regular customers, some of which have been coming back frequently throughout the 27 years that it has been open. “We have lots of loyal customers – they’ve always come here for 30 years,” he said. “They always come for the same thing. I

say, ‘how can you get the same meal for so many years?’, and they say they love it!” It’s for this reason that Mr Po said he saw such disappointment from the community when the restaurant announced its closing, with some even being brought to tears. Even the Weekender was flooded with feedback about the news. It was at this point that Mr Po decided it was his time to take the reigns. “After it closed, about two weeks later, I quickly talked to the agent. The agent’s very kind, they said ‘You can continue, see what happens’,” he said. Now having been reopened for just over two weeks, Mr Po said that he’s seen an abundance of support from local people, and that he’s excited to welcome even more customers through the doors. “Lots of people have called back saying, ‘We’re very happy that you’re back in business’,” he said. Whilst the classic green curry, chicken cashew nut and chilli beef are undoubtedly here to stay, Mr Po said to expect a few modern changes from Three Junction Thai in the coming weeks. As for what they are? Well, you’ll have to book a table and find out.

Amara’s big break in major musical CASSIDY PEARCE

ine-year-old Werrington Downs local, Amara Kavaliku, has been cast in the role of Jane Banks in Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of ‘Mary Poppins’, opening at the Sydney Lyric Theatre next month. After undergoing a rigorous audition process, with over 200 young performers vying for the role, Amara found out she was cast in the musical just two months ago. Though she now has five years of experience in commercials and catalogue work, and was crowned the face of dancewear brand Capezio in 2020, ‘Mary Poppins’ will be Amara’s very first musical – an exciting step in the budding triple threat’s career, and a realisation that left her mum, Nicole, in tears. “When her dance teacher rang to tell me, I don’t know, I was a bit teary,” Ms Kavaliku said. Despite admitting that rehearsals have been quite tiring, with back to back days from 10am to 6pm, Amara said she’s enjoyed every minute of it. Something that’s helped her get through

the long days are the friendships that she’s made along the way – including with the other girls that she’s sharing the role of Jane with. “It’s really fun actually,” she told the Weekender. “They’re all really nice to me, and I’ve made a lot of friends, even adults!” Having taken dance classes since the age of four and singing lessons since the age of six, Amara is no stranger to the stage. But, this doesn’t make the ‘Mary Poppins’ opening night any less momentous. “I’m super excited to perform on stage!” Amara said. However, when it comes to what’s next for Amara, it seems she wants to keep her options open. “I might do musical theatre, but I might do musical theatre and other things,” she said. “But I really like musical theatre, it’s really fun!” ‘Mary Poppins’ will be opening at the Sydney Lyric Theatre on Sunday, May 15. Tickets to the production are on sale now.

Council’s 2017-2021 Disability Inclusion Action Plan delivered many changes across the City which were identified using community feedback. One of the changes included the upgrade of five playgrounds in Cranebrook, Glenmore Park, Penrith, North St Marys and St Clair to support inclusive play. TURNING BACK TIME This photo of 114 Henry Street, Penrith was taken back in the 1980s. Penrith City Council moved into this building from Station Street in the 1980s while waiting for the Civic Centre to be constructed. The building was originally a furniture store. Once Council moved out, 114 Henry Street was used for a variety of purposes – most recently the home of a number of charity groups. nd right on cue, it begins. Nathan Cleary is a protected species. Penrith fans are arrogant. Ref’s fault. The boys are enjoying themselves too much. One after another, the critics keep lining up ready to take their shot. We’ve been here before, of course. Ironically, it was against Canberra in 2021 that the ‘mug lairs’ line and criticism of Penrith’s over-the-top celebrations came to the fore. We all know how 2021 ended. The fans know this Penrith team better than anyone and that’s all that matters. You would not meet a more family-centred, grounded and community-focused group of players anywhere in the NRL. Other clubs have dealt with this over the years too. Melbourne fans for years had to deal with Cameron Smith being hated by other fans; while Brisbane during their

Now that the Broncos aren’t a threat, they’re liked again. The Panthers are unlikely to be impacted by all of this talk as they prepare for Friday night’s clash with the Gold Coast at Cbus Super Stadium. And they’re also unlikely to quieten the way they act and play, given it not only garners results but is deserved given how long and hard they and others at the club have worked for this sustained success. Penrith coach Ivan Cleary again enjoyed the fruits of where his side sits on the ladder in last week’s game against Canberra, using the match to prepare for a short turnaround against the Titans. Cleary used James Fisher-Harris, one of his most potent wrecking balls, for just 44 minutes last weekend – considerably less

than in previous weeks. He even used Liam Martin in the front row for a period, tweaking the squad on the run as he manages what can be a gruelling NRL schedule, particularly when short turnarounds are involved. And while the backs will do most of the exciting stuff on Friday night, this is definitely a game where the forward battle is key. As poor as they’ve been in recent weeks, the Titans boast an impressive set of big men in the shape of David Fifita, Beau Fermor, Isaac Liu and Tino Fa’asumaleaui – they just need to figure out how to best utilise them. I would have been prepared to call this a danger game had the Titans put in a better performance against the Cowboys last weekend but it was a meek and mild effort that now has real concerns around it after high expectations in the off-season.

It’s just not clicking for Justin Holbrook’s men and you’d be hard pressed to mount an argument that they’ll run themselves back into form against the best side in the competition. There is of course a risk that Penrith are looking over their shoulder at what’s to come over the next month: clashes against heavyweights Parramatta, Melbourne and the Roosters and a long road trip to Townsville. But as much as a form turnaround from the Titans seems unlikely, it’s hard to see Penrith dropping their bundle so quickly after another dominant performance last weekend, particularly in the second half. If Penrith can sustain what is likely to be an early forward onslaught from the Titans, class should ultimately prevail and they’ll walk away comfortable winners. Tip: Panthers by 14.

Asked whether his daughter will be playing rugby league in the ensuing years, he said: “Yeah soon, soon. She has an interest in playing but she’s still raw. I think we’ll get her into something. She’s keen on whatever.” Fisher-Harris, who also has an eighth-month-old son named Deon with his partner Natalie, said his children are very close with his teammates’ kids, which can only be a good thing for the future success of the Panthers. “It’s a good family vibe around the club because all the boys have kids and they are all around the same age,” he said. “Their bond was formed up on the Sunshine Coast last year, they all built a good connection up there and all the kids are super close now.”

Slow clap: Penrith fans mocking the Viking Clap is a bit of harmless fun all part of the rivalry that is rugby league. For it to blow up into anything else this week is nothing short of ridiculous. Firstly, let’s remember and accept that Canberra didn’t invent the Viking Clap – as good as

it is at Raiders home games, they stole it from overseas. Secondly, when you make it such a huge part of a pre-game ritual that is shown before every home game, it’s obvious that you open yourself up to being mocked at away games when you’re losing. Thirdly, Michael Ennis mocked the Viking Clap as a PLAYER on another team, and ended up being employed by Canberra, so they can’t be too sensitive about it.

! Born to be a Panther: 630 new Panthers fans have a special NRL commemorative birth certificate, new figures confirm. The NSW Government initiative allows parents to get a club-themed birth certificate for their newborn. Since the concept was launched in 2016, the Bulldogs lead the pack with a grand total of 1509 themed certificates. The Panthers are 10th on the table, with the 2021 Premiership year being the most popular with 147 certificates ordered. ! STAINES: WHY WE’RE BETTER IN 2022 NATHAN TAYLOR

A

s he looks to hang on to his spot with the impending return of Brian To’o, Panthers winger Charlie Staines believes Penrith – the NRL’s competition leaders and only undefeated team – are better now than they were this time last season. While the 2021 Panthers went on a 12-game winning streak to start the year and this season’s current group are yet to taste defeat heading into Round 8 against the Titans, Staines said the side has already improved when compared to the first quarter of last season. “I think we are better,” Staines said confidently on Monday. “I think we have definitely improved from last year. We’re obviously scoring a lot more points and we’re defending pretty well also. “I think there’s room for improvement, but I definitely think we are better this year.” Staines’ comments can also be backed up with statistics. At the same point last year, Penrith had scored 184 points, while this season – after seven games – the Panthers have improved their attack and have notched up a whopping 220 points. When it comes to defence, the 2021 Panthers were a lot stronger – only leaking 44 points after seven games compared to this year’s 84 points against. Meanwhile, the 21-year-old speed machine has also assessed his own start to the season after seven games back in the top grade. Staines played 21 matches for the Panthers last year before being dropped at the pointy end of the season for eventual Grand Final hero Stephen Crichton. Speaking with Extra Time, Staines said it “feels good” to be back in the NRL after

working on some key aspects of his game during the off-season. “I wanted to come out this year and play some good footy. I’m happy I’m doing that, and the team is going well too,” he said. “I needed to work on getting more involved and not float in and out of games – be mentally present the whole game – and I feel I like I’ve done that.” While his try-scoring has dried up somewhat compared to previous seasons, Staines’ has already improved his kick returns and running metres to start the year. Last season the Forbes product averaged 87 running metres per game, while in 2022 he’s boosted that number to 125 metres per game so far. “My kick returns are a sign of me getting involved in the game and doing my best for the team,” Staines said. “You’ve got to help out the forwards, every back three does that in the NRL. I’ve worked on that this year and feel like I’ve found a good balance.” But with NSW Blues star and Premiership winner Brian To’o due back from a knee injury as early as next week, Staines’ positive start in first grade could come to a premature end. With fellow winger Taylan May lighting up the left edge and leading the team in tries scored with eight, all signs point to Staines being the odd man out. “I’m not sure what will happen when Bizza is fit to play, obviously he’ll come back in the team – he’s one of our best players,” Staines said. “I’m just focused on trying to play my best footy and doing my best for the team.

Penrith’s trip up north will be the first time they’ve returned to the Sunshine State since their Grand Final triumph on October 3. Staines said despite the Titans’ struggles to begin the year, he’s expecting nothing but a tough contest. “Every week is a hard week, everyone turns up to play against us and we don’t take any challenge lightly,” he said. “No matter where the opposition sits on the table, it’s going to be a hard game. We just want to give our best every single week.”

EISENHUTH READY FOR HARD YARDS NATHAN TAYLOR

W

hen hooker Soni Luke made his NRL debut last Sunday afternoon at the age of 26, Panthers prop Matt Eisenhuth knew exactly how he felt. After numerous setbacks combined with bouncing around the league during the early part of his career, Eisenhuth didn’t end up making his first grade debut until he was 24. But, in the end, persistence paid off for the determined Luke last weekend just like it did for Eisenhuth some five years earlier. Speaking with Extra Time this week, Eisenhuth praised the St Marys junior for never giving up hope of playing in the NRL. “I’m sure there’s times where you think you may have missed the boat, but hard work and determination can get you a long way,” Eisenhuth said. “Against Canberra, Soni fitted in like he’d been there for a

while. I’m so happy for him. I’ve been there before debuting a bit later than some of the others, but he took his opportunity that he had earned. He had a great pre-season, he’d been killing it in NSW Cup, so it was good to see him get a game.” After a stellar debut where he set up a try for co-captain Isaah Yeo, Luke has retained his place on Penrith’s interchange bench for tonight’s game against the Gold Coast Titans in Robina. Eisenhuth said he first met Luke while the pair were playing at the Wests Tigers several years ago. “I actually did a pre-season with Soni, he came to the Tigers for a year,” the 29-year-old revealed. “He impressed me there too, but he’s had a lot of injuries along the way. He’s worked hard to get to where he is.” As for Eisenhuth, he notched up his sixth game of the season in Penrith’s huge victory over the Raiders at a packed out BlueBet Stadium last Sunday. Following Moses Leota’s

shoulder injury in the opening round, Eisenhuth has done a superb job alongside James Fisher-Harris in Penrith’s engine room. “I love being back… any time you’re playing first grade you’re happy,” Eisenhuth said. “I played a fair bit of it last year and I’m just happy to be doing my part for the team wherever that is. I just love playing with these boys and doing my role for them whatever that may be.” Eisenhuth was a key member of Penrith’s Premiershipwinning side last season, playing 19 games before being left out of the Grand Final team and much of the Finals. “At first you’re disappointed as anyone is when you play so many games but then, after that, you realise what you’re a part of is pretty special and what you contributed to the team throughout the year,” Eisenhuth said. “It’s a whole 30-man job to get to a Grand Final and I played my part in that. At the end of the day, that’s how I look at it.”

hen you’ve had the perfect start to the season it’s nice to have a look at the form of the players that helped get you to the top of the mountain. To make it more fun let’s put the team under the microscope in three categories of three. The first is the top three players who are playing the best. 1. Isaah Yeo – To say he’s in the form of his career is an understatement. A ball-playing lock who is also your best tackler. There’s nothing this bloke can’t do and he’s your co-captain as well. 2. Dylan Edwards – Safe as a bank under the high-ball, makes plenty of metres from kick returns and has also learned how to inject himself into the backline and become an important link in attacking raids. 3. Apisai Koroisau – Crafty with the ball, Api knows when to run, knows when to pass and knows how to defend. Always bamboozles the defence and is playing like an absolute ‘boss’. Now let’s look at the top three underrated players. 1. Matt Eisenhuth – The tall, rangy frontrower was not everyone’s choice when Moses Leota went down but Eisenhuth has been a revelation. Safe defender, always runs hard and makes few mistakes. 2. Jaeman Salmon – I’m a convert of

this guy. He comes on, plays a variety of positions from backrower to centre and fits in seamlessly. Getting better with each game. 3. Spencer Leniu – Now while Leniu doesn’t get big minutes, he makes a huge impact whenever he comes on. Full of enthusiasm, Leniu always bends

the defensive line with his charges and he can also score tries. Finally, the three players that need to lift their game. 1. Charlie Staines – Poor Charlie has improved out of sight from last year but has been overshadowed by Taylan May on the other wing. Needs to get more involved. I think he’ll be the man to miss out when Brian To’o comes back in a few weeks time. 2. Mitch Kenny – I’m being tough on a player who doesn’t get to play a lot of minutes when he gets on but look at the impact Leniu makes with his limited minutes. Solid as a rock but needs to be more creative in attack. Perhaps that’s why he’s spending some time in reserve grade at present, with Soni Luke promoted to first grade. 3. Brian To’o – What? ‘You’re an idiot Langy’ I hear you say. Let me explain, ‘Bizza’ was a little disappointing in the two games he played before his injury. Well down on metres made and well contained, To’o will need to find his 2021 form when he gets back, something I’m sure he’ll do. So there you have it, the good, the not-so good and the ….err…you can do better. It’s hard to find fault in a team which hasn’t lost a game but the Panthers know they can get better and that in itself is a scary thing for the other 15 teams in the competition.

ith so many NRL talking points again this week, what could be more rugby league than a set of six. Let’s go.

First tackle Bring on Magic Round and the Saturday night game at Suncorp Stadium on May 14. Penrith meet Melbourne for the first time this season and it shapes as some contest! Penrith is the best defensive team after keeping Canberra to six points last weekend. Melbourne is the best attacking team after putting 70 on the Warriors. After Melbourne won 17 of their 18 clashes from 2006-17, they have since had four wins each. Who will forget Penrith taking last year’s Preliminary Final 10-6 after Melbourne had won the previous year’s Grand Final 26-20. The Magic Round match up will only grow in significance if they keep winning – Penrith against Gold Coast and Parramatta over the next two rounds, and Melbourne against Newcastle and St George-Illawarra. Second tackle There are some struggling teams in a world of hurt right now. Canterbury has lost six games straight, Newcastle five, Canberra four, Gold Coast three. And the Warriors just got spanked by 60. I asked my guests on ‘NRL Tonight’ this week, who’s in the biggest hole? Mark ‘Spudd’ Carroll went straight to the Bulldogs because their

recruiting is yet to show. Tim Mannah singled out Newcastle, describing their loss to his Eels as horrible. I nominated Gold Coast, given their Top 8 claims and their lack of resilience and consistency. This week the Dogs tackle the Roosters, the Knights run into Melbourne and the Titans play Penrith. Good luck! Third tackle St George-Illawarra and Wests Tigers are proof how quickly it can turn around. A fortnight ago, the Dragons were still cursing Paul Vaughan’s BBQ and the Tigers were about to announce a new coach. Now they face off on Sunday, where the winner will make it three in a row. Whose turn is it to kick the winning field goal for the Tigers this week if needed? Tim Mannah reckons Alex Twal! Fourth tackle Jackson Hastings (pictured) has been first class for Wests Tigers since rebuilding his career in England. Another Aussie – former St George-Illawarra and Parramatta player Jai Field – might hope to follow suit. He has been electric for Wigan. He leads the competition for run metres and try-scoring (14), not to mention their Man of Steel voting. His effort to catch a failed Salford field goal and race nearly 100 metres for the match-winning try last Sunday was phenomenal.

Fifith tackle It was no surprise to hear NRL Head of Football Graham Annesley’s disappointed that Daniel Tupou and Aaron Pene stayed on the field after making high contact on Anzac Day. Both incidents looked automatic sin bins and possible send offs. And the last Ryan Papenhuyzen is the new Dally M leader. ‘Paps’ has scored in each of his last six games – 10 in total – and delivered another six try assists. His best try tally for an NRL season is last year’s 14. He could reach that mark this week!

dominant performance at BlueBet Stadium has seen the Penrith Panthers return to the top of the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup ladder. Taking on the Canberra Raiders at home, the Panthers scored the first of eight tries inside two minutes when Thomas Jenkins beat the defence to the left-hand corner. A shift to the right shortly after then saw Robert Jennings extend the lead. The Panthers had their third try after just 16 minutes when Eddie Blacker crossed untouched from a Mitch Kenny short ball. The Panthers made the Raiders pay for illdiscipline, with Liam Henry and Christian Crichton scoring following penalties to take a 28-0 lead into half-time. The second half began with plenty of mistakes and penalties from both teams before J’maine Hopgood backed up some second phase play to extend Penrith’s lead. The Panthers’ defence was finally breached shortly after when Jarrod Croker scored off a Sam Williams bomb, but Canberra’s joy was short-lived when Sunia Turuva scored off a simple show-and-go. Jenkins scored his second try when he flew through to mark a Sean O’Sullivan chip kick inside the final 10 minutes, with a late consolation try to Canberra leaving the final score 44-12 in favour of Penrith. It was all one-way traffic for the Panthers Jersey Flegg Cup side earlier in the afternoon, scoring 11 tries to three in a 64-16

thrashing of the Raiders. Despite William Fakatoumafi opening the scoring for Penrith, the Panthers quickly found themselves behind 10-6 thanks to two quick Raiders tries. Three tries in the space of six minutes to Fakatoumafi, Niwhai Puru and Isaiah Iongi helped take the Panthers to a 22-10 lead after 23 minutes, with a further try to Cody Lawson take the margin to 18 at the break.

They extended that lead when Iongi scored his second two minutes after the resumption, before Canberra added their third try of the afternoon. It was a procession of points afterwards for the Panthers, scoring five tries in the final 15 minutes. Fakatoumafi completed his hat-trick, with tries also scored by Bradley Fearnley, Daniel Sykes, Daeon Amituanai and Braith Alexander.

PLAY’S REVIVAL WILL GET YOU TALKING CASSIDY PEARCE timely and ruthlessly entertaining portrait of the corporate world and lateral racism through the eyes of employees at Clearday cosmetics, ‘White Pearl’ presents itself as not only as a shameless black comedy, but also as a conversation starter. Upon reading the script for the first time in 2018, director Priscilla Jackman admits to being taken aback by its ferocity, and the diversity of both its themes and the characters. “I have to say, when I first read the script, it was like nothing I’d read before,” she told the Weekender.

“I found it so provocative, and fierce, and exciting, and it’s absolutely full of really quite controversial and hard-hitting themes that are jam-packed, and it just felt like an absolute ride, and a real pageturner.” Following this, she remembers her discussions with Anchuli Felicia King, who penned the work, putting together what would be the show’s first season. “I had the pleasure of meeting with Felicia and talking in real detail about what I understood to be the work, and my vision for what I could see it to be,” she said. “I felt so grateful from that day that she was keen to work with me as well.” When the show debuted at the Riverside Theatre in 2019, it was met with praise from critics and audiences alike, result-

ing in the awarding of the Sydney Theatre Award for Best Ensemble in 2019. “We were overwhelmed by the success, and really pleasantly surprised and thrilled,” Priscilla said. “When we won best ensemble, that was amazing, and, I feel, very deserved for the particular cast. Every time we’ve done this show, there’s been an extremely special relationship that our cast has developed.” Now, after being sold out in its initial run, the show will be returning to Riverside Theatres in May. “It’s like coming home, coming back to Riverside and National Theatre of Parramatta,” she said. “We all feel really excited because of the support and belief that National Theatre of Parramatta has always had in this project.”

Though the direction of the show is much the same, Priscilla notes that changes in the cast and growth within the production has created a new viewing experience for audiences, who she hopes will leave the show with a conversation to have afterwards. “I think that audiences, even if they’ve seen it back in 2019, I do hope they’ll really get a lot out of coming again if they choose to, as well as we hope to have a lot of new audiences to share the work with,” she said. ‘White Pearl’ will open at Riverside Theatres in Parramatta on Thursday, May 5 at 7.30pm. CELEBRATING JAZZ IN PENRITH

COUNTRY DUO HITTING THE ROAD CASSIDY PEARCE

O

ver 32 years ago, a committee meeting was held to discuss running jazz festivals in the Penrith area. A group was put together by professional musician Terry Rae of local students from St Dominic’s College, Caroline Chisholm College and Blaxland High School, as well as a few from Holy Cross College, Ryde, and they later became the Penrith City Young Band. In 1990, the band came in second place in an international competition held at Sydney Opera House, and by the time they

reached the festival, it had grown into a 45-piece orchestra. This Sunday, May 1, a concert will be held at Kingswood Sports Club as a memorial for the celebration of 32 years of jazz in Penrith, honouring those who have passed who supported and encouraged the children in the band. Many of those playing at the event will be from the original jazz band from 32 years ago, and will feature in a full orchestra, big swing band plus strings, including jazz and a selection from various shows. ‘32 Years of Jazz in Penrith’ will be on at Kingswood Sports Club on Sunday, May 1 from 2pm to 5pm. Note the HDMI cable is not included. The installation and setup process is quick and easy, and access to the device is simply changing your source

input on your television to the HDMI port it is plugged into. Once set up, you are presented with a screen listing a selection of movies and television shows and a list of suggested applications, including the most popular

ones. Enter your Netflix, Disney, Stan or Apple credentials and start streaming in 4K. You can also access all the catchup TV services, including 7+, 9now, 10Play, ABC iView and SBS. Like other devices, the Apple TV 4K

connects up well with other devices and applications within its ecosystem. I like its ability to connect with your Apple Watch to track your health statistics when doing Apple Fitness+ classes. Apple TV also allows you to connect an Xbox controller to play games on Apple Arcade. You can also connect your AirPods for private listening to Moves, TV or Apple Music. The remote that comes with the Apple TV is well designed and simple to use, and significantly improved from its predecessor. It also supports Siri voice commands to find and launch content. Like Google and Amazon, it will consolidate the results onto a single screen. It is an excellent addition if you are already heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem. It is a powerful device with connectivity between all your Apple devices. It is the most expensive of the three streaming devices mentioned, with the 32GB model being $249 and the 64GB model being $279. Suppose your primary reason is to view streaming services and use the device as a consolidation service. In that case, the Amazon and Google solutions are equally as good at a significantly discounted price ($60-$100). It is available at the usual retail outlets.

iabetes in pets (Diabetes Mellitus) is a common disorder that affects animals similarly to the way it affects humans. It is caused by a lack of insulin in the body, or the body’s inability to respond to insulin. Insulin is produced in the pancreas and allows the body’s cells to utilise glucose from the blood for energy. When an animal does not have enough insulin, glucose levels in the blood increase. Without insulin, the body is forced to use energy sources other than glucose. This leads to a build-up of toxins in the blood. How is diabetes in pets diagnosed? A simple blood test will reveal the increased levels of glucose. However, urine tests and further blood tests can help determine the severity of the effects of diabetes on the body. Clinical signs of diabetes in pets can include the following: • Increased thirst and increased urination • Increased appetite with variable weight changes (often increase in early stages) • Depression • Lethargy and/or vomiting • Sweet, ‘acetone’ breath • Dehydration • Cataracts in the eyes How is diabetes in pets treated? Treatments for diabetes depend on the

severity of the disease. Most pets with diabetes will require insulin injections once or twice daily. Once an animal is diagnosed as a diabetic, more tests to determine how the diabetes is affecting the body are necessary. ‘Simple’ diabetics who are eating well will often start insulin injections straight away and spend only a short time in the hospital for monitoring. The patient can then go home and pet owners can administer regular insulin injections as determined by your vet. Often, dietary changes are necessary, and diabetic pets need to be fed at times suitable for their insulin levels. Diabetic pets will also need to revisit the veterinary clinic for regular blood glucose monitoring. This is important as insulin requirements can change over time. Pets with more severe diabetes will require different treatments and monitoring. These pets usually require a longer period of hospitalisation, and intravenous fluids to correct dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. It can take a long time to stabilise particularly sick diabetics, and some do not respond well to treatment. Owners must be aware of the time, costs and possible treatment failure before treatment is started.

ne of the keys to success when posting on social media is knowing what time you should be doing so. If not, your post will just get lost in all of the other content and never reach its target market. Analysing data from tens of thousands of social media accounts, a new study by Sprout Social reveals the best times to post on social media in 2022. Best time to post: overall Overall, midweek mornings have the highest level of social media engagement. This applies to the days between Tuesday and Thursday at 9am or 10am. Sunday is the worst day to post on social media. Facebook Facebook engagement has shifted from mid-morning to early morning. Early weekday mornings have the highest consistent engagement and are regarded as the best times to get eyes on Facebook posts. Mondays through Fridays at 3am are the best times to post on Facebook. Saturday is the worst day to post on Facebook. Instagram Instagram experienced a surge in popularity between 2020 and 2021,

reaching two billion monthly users by 2022. The increase in users has resulted in an expansion of the top time periods to post on Instagram, with midday engagement on weekdays increasing in comparison to previous years. The best times to post on Instagram are as follows: • Every Monday at 11am. • Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning at 10am until 1pm. • 10am – 11am on Thursdays and Fridays. According to the study, there are also opportunities for increased engagement in the evenings and on weekends. LinkedIn LinkedIn engagement is highest during the workweek, is most concentrated during midday, and does not extend too far beyond the workday hours. Netball numbers suffer decline NATHAN TAYLOR

ne of the biggest opening days in Penrith District Netball Association (PDNA) history will get underway tomorrow morning at Jamison Park Netball Complex. Not only will PDNA and its 22 clubs celebrate the return of winter netball after a disruptive 2021 season, but the day also kicks off festivities for the association’s 50th anniversary. After a low-key launch last year, Penrith Netball is pulling out all the stops for this season’s opening day and traditional March Past event. “It’s Penrith Netball’s 50th year this year, so it’s a big celebration for us,” PDNA President, Joy Gillett said. “Not only will our opening day this Saturday feature a big attendance, marching band as well as a few surprise guests, but we’ve got plenty of other events planned throughout the year too, including a big anniversary dinner at Panthers in October as well as an outdoor movie night at the courts featuring food trucks and entertainment.” After a lite version in 2021, Gillett

confirmed Penrith Netball will be bringing back the traditional March Past event, but this time with a very special twist. “We are having a full March Past again, so all the colours of the clubs will be there. There will be no restrictions on numbers, so we are encouraging all our clubs to dress up and have fun,” she said. “In some exciting news, I can reveal the March Past Trophy will be renamed this year as the Jan Jackson March Past Trophy. Jan was the longest ever serving member on our Executive Committee before she retired last year. We wanted to do something special to honour her.” While the Penrith community is very excited to have local netball back for another year, unfortunately registration numbers have taken a slight hit on previous seasons. Despite two new independent clubs – Renegades and Inferno – joining the fray, player numbers are down 15 per cent. “Our numbers are down to about 3200, whereas we normally sit around the 4000 mark,” Gillett said. “I think a lot of people were a bit disillusioned after two disruptive years… it’s not just juniors or seniors, numbers are down virtually across the board.

“At this stage, we are hoping for a regular, pre-pandemic season. We’ll plan week by week as we did before, but I think all the signs are that it should be a better year and

we’ll get a full season in.” Tomorrow morning’s March Past kicks off at approximately 8.30am, with the first games getting underway at 9.30am.

wo proud locals from the Pendragons Dragon Boat Club have represented New South Wales at the 2022 Australian National Dragon Boat Championships in Adelaide recently. 250 paddlers, coaches and managers from all over the country converged on the AM Ramsay Regatta Centre earlier this month for the return of the prestigious event, which had been affected by COVID in recent years. Cranebrook resident Ray Debono and Leonay’s Jane Howard represented NSW on the picturesque West Lakes course, taking home a swag of medals between them. Competing in the Senior C category,

Debono and his NSW teammates won Gold in the 500m Mixed event, Bronze in the 500m Men’s event, and Bronze in the 1km Pursuit. Competing in the Senior B category, Howard also collected three medals of her own, including Silver in the 500m Mixed event, Silver in the 500m Women’s event, and Silver in the 1km Pursuit. It was a huge effort from the local duo whose training schedule, in the lead-up to the event, was massively impacted due to flooding at Sydney International Regatta Centre. It was a very strong performance across all categories for NSW, with the state paddling away with a whopping 27 medals along with the Peter Bristow Championships Trophy for the highest performance against the other states.

nvictus Australia and Bowls Australia are coming together with Penrith Bowling and Recreation Club to host a veteran and family bowls day. The day, which has been held a number of times over the past year in other bowling clubs around Australia, aims to bring together local veterans and their families for an afternoon of bowls, and a barbeque dinner. Now, after being postponed due to the rain, the event is finally making its way to Penrith next month. Bowls Coordinator, Steve Martin, said that the day has the potential to bring about new friendships for local veterans. “There’s no disputing bowls is attractive to the older generation, it’s well and truly played by a lot more younger people nowadays, but if you’re doing nothing, you’ve retired or whatever, it’s great just to go down,” he said. “The social interaction is what a lot of people come here for, and they may or may not ever improve with bowls, but they certainly meet a lot of new friends.” For those who might be new to the game, Mr Martin assures that club members will be eager to assist. “Veterans of all mannerisms, whether they served one day or served all their career, and their families can come down,” he said.

AFL: Penrith and Macquarie University have played out a rare 67-67 draw in the opening round of the AFL Sydney Platinum Division competition. The Rams were behind heading into the final term but managed to level proceedings by full-time. Mitchell Stevens booted a team-high two goals in the contest. The Rams will face the Camden Cats this Saturday afternoon in Caddens. RUGBY UNION: The Penrith Emus have fought hard but ultimately went down to the Wests Lions 34-22 in Round 1 of the John | Dent Cup. Despite the loss, there was plenty to like about the Emus in both attack and defence, which is a change from previous seasons in Sydney’s Shute Shield. The Emus will return to Nepean Rugby Park for the second straight week when they battle the Queanbeyan Whites at 3.05pm this Saturday.

RUGBY LEAGUE: Round 6 of the Sydney Shield and Ron Massey Cup competitions took place last weekend, with St Marys enjoying victories in both games. In the Ron Massey Cup, St Marys smashed Western Suburbs 32-10. In the Sydney Shield, St Marys thumped local rivals Brothers Penrith 58-6. Both St Marys teams will take on the Wentworthville Magpies in Round 7 this weekend. SUPER NETBALL: Giants Netball have won back-to-back games, narrowly overcoming the West Coast Fever 74-73 in Round 6 of the Super Netball competition. AFL: Despite a strong final quarter the GWS Giants slumped to their fifth straight loss, going down to St Kilda 77-60 in Round 6 of the AFL competition. Toby Greene’s return from suspension wasn’t enough for the Giants, who are losing touch with the top eight with every loss that goes by. enrith will be chasing their eighth SG Ball title since 1977 this Saturday when they battle the Sydney Roosters at CommBank Stadium in Parramatta. The minor premiershipwinning Roosters and fourth-placed Panthers will do battle for the first time this season when they go head-to-head tomorrow afternoon in the 2022 SG Ball Cup Grand Final. Penrith’s last Under 18’s title was in 2018 when then Panthers five-eighth Matt Burton picked up Man of the Match honours, while the Roosters haven’t tasted glory since 2014 when a young Latrell Mitchell scored the match-winning try in the decider – ironically against the Panthers. After Penrith took care of

the high-flying Newcastle Knights 25-6 in last Saturday’s Semi Final at Kogarah, first-year Panthers SG Ball coach Scott Thompson said his side are full of confidence heading into Saturday’s clash against the boys from Bondi. “The boys are in a good zone and a good place with their footy. They are enjoying what they do and that’s a big part of it. I can’t see why we can’t go in with the same mentality this week as well,” he said. The Roosters, who are yet to lose a game this season, booked their place in this weekend’s decider following a strong 32-12 victory over Canterbury-Bankstown. Boasting the best defence in the competition, the Tricolours will go into tomorrow’s game as firm favourites over the Panthers despite the two sides not going toe-to-toe at all this year. “We’ve built our side

around defence too,” Thompson hit back. “The last two weeks we’ve only conceded a try in both games. We’ll be focusing on our own backyard this week and making sure all our systems are in place and that we’re playing to the standards that we set ourselves.” While Burton led the Panthers to Grand Final glory in 2018, it was current NRL back-up half Sean O’Sullivan steering the ship for them back in the 2016 decider. This year, talented Dolphins-bound half Isaiya Katoa takes the reigns as he looks to win Penrith a third SG Ball Premiership in six seasons. “Most halfbacks are your key players and he’s no exception to the rule,” Thompson said. “Isaiya is only three games back from a broken wrist and he’s getting back to the peak of his powers already.”
