‘Huge potential’ in the Wimmera A
BY ABBY WALTER
Wimmera business leader is encouraging young people to build their management skills now, as a worker shortage affects the region.
West Vic Business ambassador Stacey Taig said she would love to see young people engage in extending their skills in business. “From a ‘young entrepreneurs’ standpoint, which is a project of West Vic Business, we would love to see young people who want to go to university but also want to stay local and have a strong desire to run their own business or a strong business acumen, to build on that,” she said. “Business management is transferable across all industry sectors. “There are lots of jobs that people could go into and start learning.”
Ms Taig said from a business perspective, it was important to take notice of how the young people of today are different from those of yesterday. “Their access to information and advancement is quicker than previously, and that’s the nature of progress,” she said. “We need to look at who these students are now and their capabilities, knowledge and understanding and say we can take them under our wing, we can train them up and can transition them into business management or business ownership. “Something that we are encouraging our business owners to do is look outside the box and look to our young people.” As someone who began her working life in Melbourne and then moved back to Horsham, Ms Taig said she
did not have high expectations for her career as it changed. “Coming back from a metropolitan area, my expectations were not high – but I wouldn’t have had the opportunities I had here had I stayed in Melbourne,” she said. “There’s huge potential in the Wimmera for individual growth and prosperity. “We’re seeing numerous young people owning their own homes, and that’s the difference between living in a regional area. The ability to create a prosperous and happy life for yourself is a lot easier and a lot more attainable. “I have seen several young people locally who have made the decision to stay and work here and have achieved incredible things, so that’s what working in the Wimmera does
– it provides you the opportunities that you wouldn’t necessarily get in a metropolitan area.” Ms Taig said a good mindset was a big part of making the transition from school into a career or changing jobs, especially after coming out of a period of restrictions and COVID-19 lockdowns. “Young people have missed out on celebrating major life milestones and they’ve been isolated for an extended period,” she said. “I think the natural inclination to retreat is a lot stronger in that age group because these are the formative years, and they were in a situation where they were forced into isolation. “One of the biggest challenges is shifting the mindset and getting people back out there and engaging them within the workforce and the greater
community.” Ms Taig said the Western Victorian Careers Expo would be a good place to start getting job seekers and students back into engaging with the local workforce. “We have some great businesses across our region, and this is a great way to get to know the faces behind them,” she said. “There are some businesses you wouldn’t know exist because they might be national or global and work behind closed doors here and their trade is online. “My advice to any young person is if you have a particular passion or interest, be brave and put your hand up and go and speak to someone in that sector. “The careers expo is an opportunity to do that, so go there and talk to people.”
Immersive opportunities on offer as expo returns W
estern Victorian students and job seekers can ask questions and gain knowledge about higher education and a variety of industries at the Western Victorian Careers Expo. The event, on Tuesday at Wimmera Events Centre at Longerenong, includes more than 70 exhibitors and 40 seminar hosts. Wimmera Southern Mallee Local Learning and Employment Network Careers Expo program manager Vanessa O’Loughlin said it was pleasing to host a face-to-face event. “It’s really important for students to have direct contact with higher education providers and industries for information on what they can do, job shortages, local opportunities and how to establish a smooth career path,” she said. “This year it’s really exciting that we are targeting job seekers and career changers of any age. “It’s also exciting to have more than 70 exhibitors in a variety of industries including health, youth support, engineering, academics, emergency services, Army reserves and higher education.” Mrs O’Loughlin said one of the highlights was a guest speaker session with EDUCATION IN AG: Longerenong College principal Avril Hogan and Wimmera Southern Mallee Local Ben Brooksby, The Naked Farmer. “It will be open to anyone in the Learning and Employment Network Careers Expo program manager Vanessa O’Loughlin discuss plans community. He is a terrific advocate for tours of the college for people attending a Western Victorian Careers Expo. Picture: PAUL CARRACHER for mental health, which is significant
as we come out of COVID,” she said. “Victoria Police Careers is also doing a presentation and for those who cannot get there on the day, they are doing a presentation at Horsham Golf Club the night before. “The seminar program includes a huge range from education, health, university accommodation and manufacturing. “In the afternoon, local company WIM Resources is hosting a panel to discuss the career opportunities with new mining projects. “There will be an influx of careers in that industry, so it’s important to plan.” Mrs O’Loughlin said the Careers Expo would allow people to immerse themselves in various industries. “There will be tours out to Longerenong College on the hour for those considering an agriculture pathway – with the chance to look at onsite living and the DATA Farm,” she said. “Skillinvest is hosting a drop-in apprentice centre for both job seekers and employers, where people can register to be an apprentice, have their resume reviewed and those looking to employ apprentices can talk to the team there. “In the meantime, ACE Radio will be broadcasting live on the day. “It’s great to be back and to be able to bring the information to the young people in a way they can engage and interact.”

Perfect time to ‘figure it out’
W
ith employment opportunities at every turn in the Wimmera, Horsham Rural City mayor Robyn Gulline is encouraging job seekers and school leavers to ‘test the waters’ and explore what they would like to pursue.
Cr Gulline said throughout the Wimmera, there were job vacancies across a full spectrum of skill levels. “There are more than 3000 job vacancies in the broader Wimmera,” she said. “You have to be happy and motivated to get out of bed each day, and if you’re not, obviously you are not doing the right job for you. “It’s a matter of talking to people and exploring your options and what it is that will fill your bucket. “Everyone is different and no-one can tell you what the best job or best career is. It’s something you will need to figure out.” Cr Gulline said a challenge for people deciding the next step in their career was uncertainty. “There’s a fear of the unknown, particularly for those who have grown up here coming back after going away for study or training, the experience of working will be new and different,” she said. “Also, changing jobs is one of the most stressful things you can do in life, so there’s good and bad in every job and every job move.” Previously a teacher, Cr Gulline said she had watched school students navigate the
process of choosing the first steps in their career. “Students would go on work placement, some would love it and others hated it, and I would say to them, ‘that’s good because now you know what you don’t want to do and you can start exploring what other options and opportunities are available’,” she said. “Discovering you don’t like something doesn’t have to be a negative thing. “There are plenty of people who have gone to university and discovered that it’s not the course they thought it would be, or there’s something else that interests them that they want to pursue. “Sometimes we have rose-coloured glasses about what our job would be, but it’s not quite as glamorous and glorious as we suspected it might have been.” Cr Gulline said the Western Victorian Careers Expo was a good opportunity to look at career industries and education. “It’s a matter of young people deciding what they would like to do and knocking on the door of a business that is in the industry, to see about some work experience and give it a try,” she said. “It’s a good opportunity to find out what training you need to do, if you can do it while you are working, or if you need to study, can you do it locally or do you have to go away? “A lot of the people who go to the careers expo aren’t school students. A lot are people looking for a career change, too.”
THINKING OF THE FUTURE: Students from across western Victoria are thinking about the industries and education institutes they want to get to know at this year’s Western Victorian Careers Expo. Organisers of the 2022 expo are inviting students and people re-entering the workforce or looking to change their career path to head along. Horsham St Brigid’s College students, from left, Claire Burton, Colby McDonald, Alex Rees and Sean McDonald check out options for their future career paths before heading to the expo at Wimmera Events Centre at Longerenong on Tuesday. killinvest apprenticeship consultants are ready to steer students on the right career path at a drop-in centre at this year’s Western Victorian Careers Expo.
Skillinvest communications officer Beau James said it was fantastic to be able to connect with students face-to-face again and provide inperson support to help guide them on their career paths. “Finding out everything you need to know about how to achieve your career goals can be a bit daunting,” she said. “The careers expo provides a space where all this information is at your fingertips and you have the opportunity to speak directly to experts in the field. “This year Skillinvest will be offering an apprenticeship drop-in centre – a space where students, employers and jobs seekers can sit down with a Skillinvest apprenticeship consultant and have all their apprenticeship, traineeship, training and employment questions answered. “An apprenticeship or traineeship is a way of getting qualified in a trade or job by learning ‘hands on’ under a skilled professional who knows the ropes, all the while getting paid while you train. “We can help students get a ‘foot in the door’ for an apprenticeship and traineeship and provide advice on how they can achieve their career goals.
HERE TO HELP: Skillinvest communications officer Beau James and apprenticeship consultant Chris Barber are looking forward to attending Tuesday’s Western Victorian Careers Expo. Picture: PAUL CARRACHER
“Having a chat with us at the careers expo is a great place to start.” Apprenticeship consultant Chris Barber will host apprenticeship and traineeship seminars, showcasing the support offered by Skillinvest, at 10.15am and 12.30pm. Mrs James said she encouraged expo visitors to attend the seminar and check out the Skillinvest stand. “This year Skillinvest will be giving visitors to our stand the chance to win a set of Apple Airpods, so expo visitors will have to see us to find out how they can win,” she said. Mrs James said support for stu-
dents and job seekers did not stop when the expo ended. “We provide a range of support for students and job seekers to help them get on the right path to their career, including mentoring, resume checks, application advice, mock interviews, registering for work, casual school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, VET in schools, work experience placements and building relationships with employers,” she said. “We also have a labour hire arm and provide a range of support for employers. “Potential employers are most
welcome to come and talk to our team at the Skillinvest apprenticeship drop-in centre to learn more about how we can support them to grow and take the hassle out of hiring so that they can focus on their day-to-day business. “It might also be a good opportunity for employers to ask us about the Boosting Apprenticeships Commencements subsidy, BAC, which concludes at the end of June. “BAC allows eligible employers to save 50 percent on wages for apprentices and trainees in their first 12 months of employment.”
Naked Farmer a special guest N
aked Farmer founder Ben Brooksby is a guest speaker at the 2022 Western Victorian Careers Expo. Originally of St Helens Plains, Mr Brooksby went to school in Horsham and now runs a farm near Penola in South Australia, while also working for Warrawindi Farms. Mr Brooksby said he was an anxious child and was not academically inclined. “I will talk about my mental health journey and my struggles through school,” he said. “I did my best and I got to year 12. I did VCAL in the last couple of years and my school-based apprenticeship on the farm. “The Naked Farmer is a mental-health organisation that I created back in 2017. “It’s all about sparking a conversation around mental health. That’s what I’m mainly known for, but the pathway to get to that point is something I will touch on during the day.” Mr Brooksby said he believes everything happens for a reason. “Mental health is a struggle, but it has sculpted me into who I am and I’m proud of that. I will be talking about that on the day as well,” he said. Mr Brooksby said education in years 10 to 12 was important, and scary. “It’s a time to face challenges. If you fail, it’s not the end of the world – there are other avenues and opportunities that will arise, and your life will do its thing,” he said. “I think that’s important for the students to realise. “The Wimmera is a community that is close to my heart, and I’m honoured to be asked to come and talk. My career pathway is a little bit different and I think it’s important that students hear about the opportunities that life can bring without you even knowing it.”

Insight into careers in mining
V
isitors to the 2022 Western Victorian Careers Expo can gain a unique insight into a career in mining.
Wimmera-based WIM Resource, an Australian leader in heavy mineral sands development, is a new exhibitor at this year’s expo and a proud major sponsor for the next two years. WIM Resource representatives will be onsite to discuss careers in mining and future employment opportunities with its Avonbank Mineral Sands Project. WIM Resource stakeholder and community liaison officer Murray Wilson said his ‘fun and engaging’ exhibit offered visitors a chance to meet the team and learn about mineral sand mining. “WIM Resource will also be hosting a key presentation with a panel of industry experts discussing careers in mining and future opportunities working with WIM Resource,” he said. WIM Resource, in collaboration with Bestech Australia, will also host a careers expo-first, with the internationally renowned Simlog civil operations simulator part of an exciting concept to introduce new career choices within the mining industry. The innovative hands-on simulator will take students from the classroom into a virtual work site as they explore their aptitude, develop real skills and learn safe work habits. Mr Wilson said the Bestech team would be available onsite to demon-

Resource will be offering in the near future as part of our Avonbank project.” There will also be outdoor expo action with a large-scale excavator onsite, possible through support from Horsham-based business Millers Civil Contractors. Mr Wilson said the excavator was typical of the machinery used for mineral sand mining. “Everyone at the careers expo will have a chance to sit in the driver’s seat for an up-close and personal experience on what it is like to be a heavy machinery operator,” he said.
GROWING INDUSTRY: WIM Resource’s Avonbank Mineral Sands Project will provide opportunities in mining for future job seekers in the Wimmera.

Creating a workforce
A
n education leader understands the flow-on effects to a workforce and community by accessing tertiary studies locally. Federation University Wimmera campus director Christine Brown said access to further education locally would help to transform the Wimmera. “It allows students to study and work locally,” she said. “A large number of students who wish to pursue higher education post-VCE leave the Wimmera, and very few return. “Further education opportunities here will keep the students local and provide support in addressing skill shortages in areas such as early childhood education, health, aged care, apprenticeship programs and trades.” Ms Brown said part of the university’s holistic approach to training was to provide the skills and knowledge to empower students to be dynamic and ready for the workplace. Federation University will offer training advice, information about course options and pathways, as well as career advice through a ‘skills and jobs centre’ at this year’s Western Victorian Careers Expo. “At the expo, students can discuss training options with our expert staff, industry representatives and potential employers,” Ms Brown said. “The expo will also introduce them to real-world examples of the roles that they can undertake in the future. “Students will get the chance to liaise with employer representatives and gain access to employment opportunities, such as traineeships and apprenticeships.”
HOLISTIC APPROACH: Federation University Wimmera campus director Christine Brown and Federation TAFE chief executive Liam Sloan, plan for this year’s Western Victorian Careers Expo. Picture: PAUL CARRACHER Ms Brown said the expo was also a showcase of interactions and partnerships between industry and Federation University and TAFE, to students and the broader community. “Our team can discuss the possible pathways to employment that are available to prospective students as well as being able to discuss with employers their needs within training or employment,” she said. “Working with local employers is part of our mission to enhance our community, building long-lasting and meaningful partnerships that will be of benefit to both our students and businesses in our region. “We will be offering training advice, information about course options and pathways, as well as career advice through the skills and jobs centre. “There will also be a ‘try a trade’ in-
teractive experience and industry-related presentations. “Federation University offers courses that give our students the skills they need to be job ready, meaning they are ready to work when they finish their studies, and in sectors that are in high demand.” Ms Brown said the message she wanted to leave with expo attendees was that at Federation University, they wanted students to dream big. “There is a plethora of career options available, from apprenticeships and traineeships through to roles requiring a degree,” she said. “There are also roles that require no formal training before commencement. “We encourage students to discuss their thoughts with teachers and friends and explore the available opportunities.”
A changing landscape T he ever-changing agriculture landscape is opening doors for people of all skills and interests to step into the industry. Longerenong College business development officer Donna Winfield said agriculture was the most rapidly changing career in the nation. “Gone are the days of an agriculture degree directly translating to sitting on the tractor. It expands into corporate and management roles as well, plus agronomy and research,” she said. Ms Winfield said evidence of the demand in the industry was the 100 percent employment rate for 2021 college graduates. “A qualification from Longerenong is highly sort-after by industry leaders and highly regarded in the industry,” she said. “We know there is a huge shortage of workers, but at the end of the day the world has to eat and that’s where Longerenong College comes into play. “For Wimmera students, it is right at their doorstep, so people don’t have to move away from the region to have a really good quality education. “Our point of difference is that it is hands-on, so students do the academic side of things and then put what they are learning in the classrooms into practice in the field. They are job ready.”
Ms Winfield said college representatives were excited to connect with students and people looking at a career in agriculture at the Western Victorian Careers Expo. “We will be promoting the amazing careers in agriculture and where a qualification from Longerenong College can take people, through our full-time courses and our apprenticeship program,” she said. “There is nothing quite like speaking to someone and being able to inspire them to be able to help them think outside the box; for them to be able to ask all those questions they can’t have answered anywhere else.” Ms Winfield said people could look at having an agriculture career that involved teaching, management, corporate businesses or technology. “The implementation of digital agriculture with the Longerenong DATA Farm is a huge bonus for students coming to the college and being able to learn about all the technologies that come with it,” she said. “As the agriculture industry evolves, Longerenong College is certainly keeping up. “Students are learning with the best machinery going around, they’re learning digital ag components so people that have that tech interest, maybe Longerenong is for them as well.”

Collective keen to ‘make it happen’
R
epresentatives from a collective of highereducation institutes are looking to connect with students and help them explore the many career possibilities.
Tertiary Information Service, TIS, is a group of universities, TAFE institutes and independent tertiary colleges helping students prepare for their future. TIS executive officer Jenna McMeel said there was something special about speaking with a student face-to-face about their dreams for the future and providing advice on how to make that happen. “Without a doubt, being able to support school career practitioners and provide information faceto-face with students has been euphoric,” she said. “While online information is convenient, you miss out on the ability to see a student’s face shine as they tell you they want to be a doctor, or a hairdresser, or a farmer. Not only that, but you have the opportunity to have more in-depth conversations with individuals who might otherwise switch off if the conversation was online.” Ms McMeel said a careers expo gave students the chance to explore opportunities they might not have realised existed. “There are lots of jobs today that didn’t exist 10 years ago,” she said. “Having a careers expo shines a light on the jobs that might be out there and the methods to make them happen. Our TIS members will be set up at the Western Victorian Careers Expo and are looking forward to talking to students about the courses they have on offer to make career goals a reality.” Ms McMeel said conducting a presentation in person also allowed an opportunity for students to ask
Wednesday, June 15, 2022
questions and tertiary representatives the chance to tailor the presentation specific to the audience. “For example, there might be a greater proportion of VCAL students to VCE in a particular session. That would mean we are talking about opportunities where an ATAR might not necessarily be relevant.” Ms McMeel said the primary aim of the service was to provide a comprehensive program of advice regarding tertiary study options to year-11 and 12 students throughout regional Victoria. “TIS events are free to schools and offer an opportunity for students to make informed decisions about their options once they finish secondary school,” she said. “TIS events encompass a presentation, delivered by tertiary representatives from various institutions within Victoria, and an expo. “The presentation covers topics such as how to apply for your chosen institution, why you should consider continuing your education, what type of qualifications you can study, where to find information regarding courses, accommodation, scholarships and assistance, what the transition to further education might look like for you, plus fees and costs. “Following the presentation, students can attend the expo, also known as a supermarket session, where students can talk to tertiary education representatives about their circumstances and pick up course guides and information on accommodation and scholarships. “The expo component of TIS events includes representatives from all the major universities in Victoria, local TAFEs and some independent tertiary colleges, such as Longerenong College.”
JUMP INTO JOBS: MIXX FM announcers Kaycee Bould, left, and Kayla Wilson will broadcast live from the Western Victorian Careers Expo. From interviews with exhibitors and attendees to interactive games, the broadcast will air from 10am to 2pm. Kaycee and Kayla will highlight interesting and informative stalls across the site, while also giving students and job seekers the chance to hear from industries that are unable to have an exhibit at the event. This year’s expo caters for everyone from secondary school students to job seekers and people looking to change careers. Picture: PAUL CARRACHER
