he Wimmera will participate in Australia’s largest and longest-running charity motoring event next week when teams tick off the first leg of a trip between Geelong and Townsville. Victorian Variety Bash drivers and their crews will, for the first time in the event’s 28-year history, navigate their way through western Victoria and visit Ararat before their first stop, in Horsham. ACE Radio Broadcasters, including The Weekly Advertiser and radio stations 3WM and MIXX FM, is a major supporter of Variety and is among Horsham teams taking part in the trek. Car 1089, The Morning Rush Blues Brothers entry, involves an ACE Net-

work team of Horsham station general manager Brendan O’Loughlin, engineering manager Ray Baker and 1089’s The Morning Rush co-host Jon Vertigan. The trio will be travelling in a Blues Brothers car, a modified 1976 HX Holden Statesman, that has a long history in the Bash. Other Horsham cars are 113, featuring Rick Smith, Brendan Khan and Alan Perry; 303 with Mark and David Ballinger and Brendan Netherway; and 2222 with Dennis O’Connor, Colin Cullen from Donald and Geoff McLaren, Warrnambool. The expectation is that about 300 people in 85 cars and 15 to 20 support vehicles will stop in Horsham on August 23. The travelling group will gather at

Horsham Town Hall for a dinner and the next day head off to Swan Hill and venture north towards Queensland. The first two days of the annual motoring event will involve Variety presenting grants at schools throughout Victoria. This will give entrants and the community the opportunity to see first-hand how Variety changes the lives of children facing challenges through sickness, disadvantage or those living with a disability.

Special school donation

Variety is donating more than $120,000 to schools, organisations and individuals on this year’s Bash, including a grant for sensory equipment for Horsham Special School. After Swan Hill, cars will travel to Broken Hill, Tibooburra, Cunnamulla,

Emerald, Charter Towers and finally, Townsville. The overall trip is 4059 kilometres and ends on August 31. The Variety Bash has raised millions of dollars nationally for Australian children in need since its inception. Bash participants, who generate money through money-raising efforts and donations, travel on pre-determined routes and usually on unsealed roads or ‘back tracks’, in reconditioned or modified vehicles at least 30 years old. They visit towns where they get to see the results of their fundraising efforts, including a range of educational, health and mobility equipment for children, schools and organisations in rural communities. Variety responds to requests for help from struggling families. Mr O’Loughlin, who has taken part in the past three bashes, said it was an honour that such an iconic event was making its trip through the region, which would take in regional attractions such as the Grampians. “The visit is also a good opportunity for people in the Wimmera to ask for help,” he said. “Anyone who feels that Variety might be of assistance to them or a family they know can get in touch with the station and we can help them get in contact with the right people. “This year the Bash will be heading through drought-affected communities and injecting thousands of dollars of funding into needy causes.” Continued page 3
