Water project bid H

orsham district might soon have access to a greater supply of recycled water if a $10million project can win government funding.

A proposed recycled-water project to ‘future proof’ Horsham as a national agricultural research hub would have broad trade-off community benefits. GWMWater is awaiting word on a government funding application for a Horsham Agriculture Smartwater

and Integrated Water Management Project. The redevelopment plan involves creation of infrastructure and adoption of technology to overcome salinity and turbidity issues in Horsham municipal wastewater to create higherquality irrigation supply. The use of Horsham wastewater is a key part of Agriculture Victoria research activities at Horsham’s agricultural SmartFarm and Grains Innovation Park. A funding application has gone to National Water Grid via the State Gov-

ernment, which is pursuing matching Federal Government support. GWMWater expects to know by mid-August if it is successful and has expectations the system would be complete within two years. The water-recycling project would shore up supply for research and development underway out of Grains Innovation Park. Agriculture Victoria uses Horsham wastewater to irrigate 190 hectares for crop trials on the research farm. If the funding application is successful, the project would provide a

reliable source of high-quality water for grain and pulse industry research. It would also provide a major boost to irrigation supply and management opportunities for industry and community socio-economic assets and activities. GWMWater stores Horsham’s treated water in a dam at Vectis, west of the city. Improving quality of the water and its subsequent use would also ease volume issues at the site. Under the planned system, wastewater would flow through a new dissolved air-floatation plant at Hor-

sham wastewater treatment facility to reduce the turbidity before being piped through existing infrastructure to a reverse osmosis plant at Horsham SmartFarm. The reverse-osmosis plant would convert a portion of the received wastewater into high-quality water suitable to spray irrigate field trials at the SmartFarm. New additional storage would hold the better-quality water. A storage facility for brine would also be part of the development. Continued page 3
