Reception News Spring Term Welcome back! We hope you have had a great Christmas break and a wonderful start to the new year! As many of the children have a keen interest in superheroes, we have decided our learning this term will have a superhero theme! You may have noticed that our classroom is beginning to take on a new look as we transform our learning environment to reflect our topic— Superheroes. We will consider the question: “What is brave?” and try to answer this during the Spring term. Through this topic we will be exploring well known superhero characters as well as discussing ’real life’ superheroes within everyday life. We will develop our story skills by inventing superhero (and villain) characters and making up stories about them. We will be looking at comic strips and begin to make our own. We will also be having a look at some pop art and have a go at creating some Lictenstein style art. At the end of the Spring Term we will celebrate our learning with our Superheroes Exhibition!!!
MY LEARNING JOURNEY In December, we sent your child’s latest Learning Journey Report to you via email. Please check your emails to find your child’s latest report. If you cannot view your child’s latest report please send us an email to: reception@monteney.sheffield.sch.uk and we will add you to our mailing list. Thank you to all the parents for your lovely comments about your child’s latest report. Here are some of the fantastic responses we have received so far: Thanks very much for these new reports. I think they are fantastic and very informative. I love the use of quotes from the children in ‘their own words’ thanks. Coby’s mum. I think the reports are a great idea for letting parents know how their child is developing in Reception. I am very proud of Corban and it’s great to see him having fun learning with his friends. Keep up the good work! Chelsea (Corban’s mummy).

Thank you so much for Lewis report. Hi, so nice to see Georgia having a great time at school. She is always telling me lots of stories and now I have seen all these photos the stories make sense now. Thanks for making Georgia’s time at school fun she loves each day more and more. Thank you Libby. I love reading these reports!! Brydon is always talking about killing zombies with Roo. If I ask him what else he’s done at school his reply is “all that work” so these reports are a really good to see what he’s been doing! Thank you!! Amie (Brydons mum) This is the 2nd report I’ve had by email for Corey and I get excited to read all the things he gets up to over the period. I am really pleased with how well Corey’s doing and all the progress he’s making. One very proud mummy. Keep up the good work Corey. Thank you to all staff for putting this lovely report together. It’s really appreciated. Kind regards Stacey (Corey’s mum). Many thanks for the report on Sophie, it is fantastic. I am so pleased at how she is developing in school. I was amazed to hear that she stood up in front of everyone and sang a song as she started off really shy at nursery. Sophie has been enjoying half-term doing Halloween activities. She has also been keen to practice writing her numbers 1-20 and reading/writing lots of CVC words. Thanks again, I think its a great way of keeping parents informed. Karen.
Please keep sending us your comments. We love to read them.

Superher Superheroes come in all shapes and sizes! As part of our Superhero topic we will be looking at ‘real life superheroes' and how they can help us. To do this we would like the children to have first hand experience of talking to people who work in jobs in which they have to help people e.g. doctor, nurse, vet, fire service, paramedic, police, shop assistant, superhero! We would love to have some visitors into school to talk to the children about their jobs and how they help people. If you work in a job in which you help people and would be happy to come into school to tell the children about what you do (or you know someone who does!), please talk to a member of Reception staff to arrange a time to do this!
Super Story
Super Numtum! The children love the NumTums, a Number based programme on Cbeebies. We use Numtums to support the children’s maths learning at school and they love the character called ‘Super Numtum’ who loves to hunt for and zap numbers! Numtums can be watched at home on CBeebies or on the CBeebies iPlayer and activities can be accessed via the CBeebies website.

Water Bottles Please remember to bring a named water bottle, containing water only please, to school each day. The children are encouraged to have regular drinks of water throughout the day to help maintain a healthy body.
Library Visits The children love going to visit Ecclesfield library. This term Mr Ardron’s class plan to visit the library on 14th January & 4th March. Miss Heslop’s class plan to visit the library on 21st January & 11th March. Your support is invaluable as we would not be able to take the children on these visits without it! If you are able to join us on our visits please let a member of the Reception team know! Please look out for a sign-up sheets in the classroom. Thank you!
P.E. The children are really enjoying their P.E. lessons at school! Please ensure your child has a P.E. bag containing black shorts, white t-shirt and a black pair of pumps. Please check that all clothing fits (especially pumps!) Please also ensure that every item is labelled. If your child wears ear-rings, you need to make sure that they have some surgical tape in their PE bags so that we can help them to cover them up and make it safe to join in PE. Alternatively, you could remove their ear-rings. PE takes place on Monday (HH) & Tuesday (AA). We do support the children with changing for PE. However, as you can appreciate, supporting a full class with changing themselves can be very time consuming and the children can become frustrated with themselves and upset. Our target for this term is for all children to be able to dress and undress themselves independently. You can help at home by asking your child to dress and undress themselves without your support. All P.E. Bags need to be in school—your child can not join in P.E. sessions without a full kit!
