Reception News Spring Term 1 Welcome back! We hope you have had a great Christmas and a wonderful start to the new year! We will begin our learning this half term by thinking about the weather, with a particular focus on cold weather conditions and snow and ice. As the half term progresses, our focus will turn to the topic of ‘People Who Help Us’. We have noticed that many of the children seem to have a keen interest in fire engines, ambulances and police cars, so we hope to develop this further through this topic.

Creative Homework Make a snow globe from a jam jar! What could you put inside? What could you use for the snow? We can’t wait to see what you make!

Phonics We will be starting phonics again this half term. Some of the children will be moving on to phase 3 phonics where they will begin to learn digraphs (two letters that make one sound e.g. ’th’). Some children will be recapping the letter sounds from phase 2 to secure their learning and build up confidence. Remember—you can help your child by using Education City games and watching Alphablocks on the CBeebies website at home!

People Who Help Us As our topic later this half term is ‘People Who Help Us’, we would like children to have first hand experience of talking to people who work in jobs in which they have to help people e.g. doctor, nurse, vet, fire service, paramedic, police, shop assistant, superhero. We would love to have some visitors into school to talk to the children about their jobs and how they help people. If you work in a job in which you help people and would be happy to come into school to tell the children about what you do (or you know someone who does!), please talk to a member of Reception staff to arrange a time to do this!

Library Visits The children love going to visit Ecclesfield library every half term. Thank you to all parents who have already supported us by coming along on these visits. Your support is invaluable as we would not be able to take the children on these visits without it! If you are able to join us on our visits on 30th January (YRCLS) and 6th February (YRCF) please let a member of Reception staff know! Thank you!

Reading Volunteers .

The children love listening to stories and looking at books at school. We would like to invite parents to come into school on a Friday morning to share stories with the children in our reading room. We will put up a sign-up sheet for the next half term for you to put your name down to join in with this. We would like one parent every week to join us for this 15 minute story reading session from 8:45—9:00. We thank you for your support!

Reading at Home Please make sure that you record the titles of all the books your child reads at home in their reading diary. You can also add a comment if you wish! Reading at home is invaluable in helping your child learn to read and get the practice they need. Remember, your child will win a prize every time they have read 15 books!

PE The children are really enjoying their P.E. lessons at school! Please ensure your child has a P.E. bag containing black shorts, white t-shirt and a black pair of pumps. Please check that all clothing fits (especially pumps!) Please also ensure that every item is labelled.

If your child wears ear-rings, you need to make sure that they have some surgical tape in their PE bags so that we can help them to cover them up and make it safe to join in PE. Alternatively, you could remove their ear-rings. PE takes place on Tuesday or Thursday. We do support the children with changing for PE. However, as you can appreciate, supporting a full class with changing themselves can be very time consuming and the children can become frustrated with themselves and upset. Our target for this term is for all children to be able to dress and undress themselves independently. You can help at home by asking your child to dress and undress themselves without your support.

All P.E. Bags need to be in school—your child can not join in P.E. sessions without a full kit!
