We have been working really hard on developing our skills on the four operations and the methods we use for these operations. So far we have mastered column addition and number line subtraction. This half term we will be moving onto the grid method for multiplication and chunking and repeated subtraction to divide.

P.E.

This Half term, we will be linking a lot of our literacy work in with our brand new topic of the Caribbean. We will be looking at stories from the Caribbean culture called Anansi stories. We will also be using the targets that we discussed on parent pupil consultation day to help us improve our writing.

We have seen a huge improvement in the number of children who have their own full PE kit and thank you for this. This half term we will be looking at Caribbean dance and doing some circuit training to help us keep fit and healthy. Creative writing in Y5! We are really excited about the up and running Chris Evan’s Writing competition on the Radio. Miss O’Connor and many children have been working really hard in their writers workshops getting ready to send entries to Mr Evans! But it’s still not too late!!! Miss O'Connor is holding 2 more workshops for any last minute entries on Friday 24th February and Tuesday 20th February. The deadline for entries is March 1st. Good luck!

Year 5 Class News Spring Term 2 2012

Creative Caribbean! During last half term we had lots of fun finding out about the monarchs that reigned during the Tudor period. This half term we will be looking at the Caribbean in our topic lessons. We will be learning about the culture, traditions, foods and people of the islands South East of the Gulf of Mexico. We were really impressed with the brilliant Tudor creative projects and can’t wait to see your Caribbean creations!

Science In science we are looking at the EARTH, SUN AND MOON. This is a really exciting science topic where we will be investigating the Big Bang Theory, the size and position of the earth, sun and moon; the other planets in the solar system and the reasons behind day and night and the four seasons. We are hoping to book a planetarium to come into school which we know is a favourite of past year 5 children!

Can you find out any fascinating facts about the Caribbean? How many famous people are from the Caribbean?

Reading Rocks at Monteney! Homework in Y5: Numeracy and literacy homework in Y5 will be handed out on a Friday and will be due in on a Wednesday. If you are struggling with homework, you can come to homework club on a Monday lunch time for help with your homework.

We are really trying hard in Year 5 to get as many 100% readers as we can! There is a prize in school for the class with the highest number of children with 100% reading records! So fingers crossed! All the children in school have now been given a new book and level to read in. There have also been some new colours introduced and a wide range of books purchased for school. We are hoping this will encourage the children to read every night and help win our class the 100% readers prize.
