Welcome back Y5 Summer Term 1 2012

Wicked Wildlife! This half term we are going to have lots of fun investigating our new topic which is Wicked wildlife! We will be looking at lots of different types of wildlife, locating them on maps, creating some fantastic artwork and even exploring cosmetic testing! We have been lucky enough to also have a visit from the Animal intuition team, where the children get some hands on experience holding some really unusual animals! We are also really excited to see what creative projects you bring into school this half term!

Science Our science topic for this half term will be Life cycles and plants. During this topic we will be investigating the difference the different parts of a plant, how plants live and the different life cycles of creatures. This topic will include lots of exciting experiments as well as giving us lots of opportunities to do science outside and use the outdoor classroom area.

Can you find out any interesting facts about animals? You could even create a fact quiz for your creative topic project!

Literacy and Numeracy homework: Sent every Friday to be returned by the following Wednesday. We are continuing to send E-zone homework which you can find on the Monteney Moodle. Creative curriculum projects: Due for presentation Wednesday 30th May.

In maths this half term we will be: • Looking at the link between fractions, decimals and percentages. • Practising written methods for addition, subtraction and multiplication as well as learning how to use chunking to divide bigger • • •

numbers. Tackling new ways of solving word problems. Converting measures. Estimate and measure length, weight and capacity.

We have a really exciting half term of literacy planned beginning with links to our creative topic. We will be exploring the controversial issue of cosmetic testing on animals. Hopefully sparking some debates! We will be writing our own reports about animals and will be making some Pingu style films of our own at the end of the half term.

P.E. PE this half term: Athletics and Badminton. Please make sure that your child has the correct P.E. kit here everyday. This should include a plain white T-shirt, black shorts and black pumps. We will be taking the children outside for some PE lessons this half term and using the school field. We would encourage children to have a pair of trainers as well as black pumps in their PE bag, although this is not part of the required uniform.
