Year 1 News Autumn Term 1 Welcome to Y1. We hope you have enjoyed the Summer break!

Our whole school theme for the first few weeks of this half term is Narnia.

This is following on from our work on transition day and the children have really enjoyed the work we have been doing so far!

Our main project this term will be ‘Homes’. We will be looking at homes in the past, homes now and also thinking about homes around the world. As part of this topic we will be designing and making a shoebox room. We would be grateful if you could bring in a

What you need in Y1 for PE The children in both classes will have 2 P.E lessons each week. Both year one classes have their PE days on Mondays and Thursdays.

Blue Book Bags!

Over the next few weeks we will be assessing all childrens reading so that they can take home books of an appropriate level. These levels are likely to change throughout the year as the children make progress throughout the year. When we have completed these assessments we will write a note in their reading diary and send home a book to read. Please can we ask that your child's blue reading folder be brought every day to school. It is essential for changing reading books so you can read together for 10 minutes every night after school. We actively encourage all children to change their reading book when they first arrive in the morning. To encourage independence we would like the children to choose their own books to take home.

Reading Mornings We would like to invite you to come and share a book with your child on Wednesday mornings between 8:35 and 8:45am. In previous years shared reading has proven to be invaluable in helping your child to learn to read.

Praise Assembly

Every Thursday we have a praise assembly to celebrate children’s achievements throughout the week. This takes place in the main hall and starts at 8.55am and will last for about 15 minutes. If your child has been chosen to receive a certificate in this assembly then your child’s class teacher will invite you to the assembly.

Creative project Our creative project this half term is to create a model of a home using junk modeling.

This could be your home, their dream home, an interesting type of home or even a home from around the world. Linking to our science topic on ‘materials’ you could think carefully about the materials and textures you could use for different purposes. We will be judging the entries in the last week of this half term so you can bring in your project any time before then. There will also be a small prize for anyone who brings in an entry. Have fun getting creative!!
