Year 3 News

Autumn Term 1

Monteney Primary School This is an exciting term for Y3 pupils with the first group of children due to go to Whirlow Hall Farm.

The whole school transition project on Narnia started at the end of the summer term and will continue for the first 2 weeks of the Autumn term.

This will then lead on to one of the most popular History topics in school–

Ancient Egypt.

We will be doing lots of exciting things based on the Ancient Egyptians including: Creating mummies from modrock



 

Locating Egypt and looking at the route of the River Nile 



Egyptian timeline

Studying Egyptian numerals and hieroglyphics

Exploring Ancient Egyptian artefacts and then creating observational drawings And many more interesting things If you have any Egyptian artefacts in your family we would love to look at them or put them on display.

Look out for things to research and explore at home linked to our Egypt topic on the Y3 zone of the Monteney Web Site.

Feel free to come and spend some time with us in class, you are always welcome.

What you need in Y3 for PE Please make sure your child has their PE kit in school for P.E. They need a plain coloured tshirt and shorts. They also need plimsolls that fit correctly.

If you need any new kit please speak to the office staff.

Please make sure all items have your child's name on including the P.E. bag. We will ensure

that the kit comes home at the end of each half term for washing.

Class workshops.

Every half-term we will be inviting parents into the classroom to take part in an aspect of the children’s learning. We will let you know in good time when the first workshop is due to take place.

Assemblies  Assembly days for Y3 this term are :  Shine Assembly—Friday at 8.55am. We will try to let you know as soon as possible if your child is in Shine Assembly.  Class Assembly—Y3BC is on 25.09.13  and Y3RO is not until 27.11.13

Transition Thank-you for supporting your child with the transition from Y2 to Y3 and from key stage 1 to key stage 2.

We are really impressed with how the children have settled in and started the new year.

If you have any concerns please speak to the Y3 staff– Mrs Craig, Mr Owen, Miss Kirby or Mrs Barnsley— between 8.35 and 8.50 am or any time after school.

Whirlow Hall Farm We are all looking forward to our residential visits on the farm throughout this year.

There will be a Whirlow meeting for all Parents and Carers of the year group to attend in September, we will let you know the date shortly. This will be the only meeting held this academic year for us to inform you about the visit and to answer any questions that you may have. Even if your child is not going to Whirlow until 2014 you will still need to attend. As soon as groups are decided we will inform you. If you have a preference for a particular week for a special reason please come and speak to us.

The children will stay for 2 nights (2 and a half days) To do this we have booked two and a half weeks throughout the year. Confirmed dates for the Y3 visits this year are weeks commencing 7.10.13, 25.11.13, 29.01.14 The total cost is £35 which includes transport to and from Whirlow, into Derbyshire, accommodation, food, guided tours of the farm and the Piggy Palace lead by Whirlow environmental staff.

Even if your child is not going till later in the year you can start to send the money (£1 week?) now if you wish.

Whatever the weather we will have a great time!

Y3 Homework

The Barn

We will be sending home a homework book for your Child to complete weekly tasks in. The tasks will be set every Friday and will be expected to be completed by the following Tuesday.

These tasks will mainly focus on grammar and sentence structure.

For Maths we will be setting home work on Education City and children can access this through their learning pathways.

If you have any queries or questions please come and see a member of the Y3 team.

Reading Rocks

This year there will be a big focus on reading and filling in reading diaries every night. We encourage you to read with your child every day for at least 5 minutes and fill in the reading diary. Every child in Y3 has been given a new reading diary. It is their responsibility to look after it and ensure it is in their blue bag every day.

To enable children to progress children need to be able to demonstrate a complete understanding of what they have read. We encourage you to ask the children questions about what they have read and their thoughts and feelings on the book. If you want any advice on this we would be more than happy to assist.

There are prizes up for grabs for the children who complete their reading diary every night! The class who has the most 100% readers (those who complete their reading diary Monday to Friday every night for a half term) also get a book voucher for £100. We really want to win this!!
