Year 6 News Spring Term 1 Earth, Wind, Fire and Water Our topic this half term is brand new to Y6! Before the holidays, you came up with lots of fabulous questions which you wanted us to try to answer in this topic, including: How do waves begin? What causes a volcano? Why do we have different weather? What is thunder? Where did the earth come from? As we work through this topic, we hope to answer some of these questions and more. We will be linking all sorts of literacy, ICT, art, PE and DT work to help us answer them.
and will introduce lots more exciting things as we move through. Maybe you have some great ideas of things you’d like to do?
We are planning to become weather forecasters and create a weekly online weather blog to share with people at home; spend some time studying fossils and creating detailed drawings of them; painting waterscapes in the style of Claude Monet using acrylic paints and pastel; discover what causes earthquakes and volcanoes and use maps and atlases to find out where in the world they occur. We are very excited about this new topic
As part of this topic we will be visiting Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham to find out about each of the 5 elements. Unfortunately, due to the stormy weather in December, the roof was damaged at Magna and our trip has been delayed until February 18th. We’ll be sending information letters shortly.

The children are all working incredibly hard in school in the run up to their SATs test and we are incredibly proud of them. All the children have now received CGP revision guides for and Maths and Grammar as well as the English practise books we sent home before the summer holidays. Please support your child in their learning at home by encouraging to spend a little time each week working in these books whilst also ensuring they bring them into school each day.
In Science we will be studying Charles Darwin and EVOLUTION.
Our Skill for Learning this half term is ‘Independence.’ Children will be learning how to become more independent in their studies-a useful tool for secondary school transition!
Our SEAL theme is “Going for Goals” As part of this we’ll be learning about Martin Luther King. See what you can find out about him!
Homework We would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the Y6 homework expectations. As children move through year 6, homework becomes increasingly important. It ensures they are consolidating skills we are learning in school to help them progress towards the end of year SAT tests. Not only this, but it is part of the preparation for secondary school where they will be expected to do a greater amount of homework and complete it independently. Encouraging this routine and awareness of deadlines whilst they are at Monteney will support this. Homework:
Literacy homework—sent every Thursday to be returned by the following Tuesday.
Numeracy homework—sent every Thursday to be returned by the following Tuesday.
Weekly spellings—sent on a Monday to be practised for a spelling quiz on Fridays
Reading—daily reading and recording in reading diaries. This can be a mixture of school bookband books and free choice from home (magazines, newspapers, football programmes, etc are also great).
Creative homework—see below
Creative Homework A creative challenge to produce “something” related to our study unit on Earth, Wind, Fire and Water, to be handed in on Wednesday 19th February.
You could create a piece of artwork, a model, a story, a poem, a quiz, anything you want!
